iGallery

Arts in the Hunter It's the start of Spring and it's time to get yourself to an art gallery. Here are a few we recommend.

At Newcastle Art Gallery until 15 October is the KILGOUR PRIZE 2017, an annual art prize for figurative and portrait painting. This year's winner, Cameron Stead, is an emerging artist still studying at the National Art School in Sydney. His self-portrait won him $50,000 through the bequest of artist Jack Noel Kilgour. His painting has already raised some local controversy with Lauretta Morton, the gallery's General Manager and one of three judges commenting, "The selection of this work also opens the prize up into the future – a brave painting that is challenging, temporary in – nature, and honest." Without MEREWETHER giving too much TRANSITION away, you best get yourself

to the gallery to see for yourself, but be mindful you have been warned. While you're at the gallery, get involved with the #nagselfiesalon and vote in the People's Choice and don't miss THE FIGURE FEMININE an exhibition featuring a selection of female figurative and portrait works from the collection. All this on the ground floor of the gallery and for free. Around the smaller independent galleries, SANCTUARY is showing at Gallery 139 – a group exhibition celebrating the places and objects that provide sanctuaries, including out homes, gardens and secret places. The opening event is on Saturday 2 September from 2 to 4pm and the exhibition runs until Sunday 17 September. There are regular ‘Meet The Artist’ sessions to go with this exhibition, so visit the website for details (www.gallery139.com.au).

Coffee Shops in the Hunter

How Coffee changed the world What connects Frank Sinatra, a goat herder and the American Revolution? No, this isn’t the start of a bad joke but a short story on how coffee has changed the world. Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia in the 9th Century by a goat herder who discovered his goats a little frisky after eating red berries from a bush. After trying the berries himself, the goat herder found his energy levels went through the roof. Those berries were of course coffee beans.

coffee wanted a novel way to advertise their coffee so they came up with the ‘Amateur Hour’. A talent show on the radio. Each week amateur talent was given the spotlight, including famously an unknown called Frank Sinatra. So before you try your next coffee, just think how different the world would be without it. By Gareth Simpson Favilla Coffee Club

Long before social media, the way to discuss ideas with like-minded people took place in coffee shops. The coffee was known to stimulate the brain, so much so that the American Revolution and French Revolution both first started as chats over cups of coffee. Long before ‘X Factor’, the first talent show happened because of coffee. Chase and Sanborn

INHERIT THE WIND

By Herome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee

Historic Morpeth River Cruising The little town of Morpeth, situated on the banks of the Hunter River, was once the gateway to inland Australia and one of the busiest trade ports in New South Wales. Today you can re-live the historic voyage of Australia's first European settlers along the mighty Hunter River on a return cruise from Newcastle to Morpeth. But unlike our pioneering ancestors you can cruise to Morpeth in modern day style and comfort with NOVA Cruises. Marvel at the dramatically changing landscape on the voyage from the city hustle along Newcastle's foreshore and industrial port through to the serenity of the Kooragang Wetlands. See the historic Hexham Lift Span Bridge (one of only three surviving lift span bridges in NSW in working order) open for your passage before cruising along the river's edge and the fertile flood plains of the lower Hunter Valley. See some of the areas prominent thoroughbred studs from your window and you may even catch a glimpse of a local camel farm as you cruise by. Guests onboard the vessel are treated to Devonshire tea served on route, and local produce tastings. Sit back, relax and take in the sights while listening to the informative captain's commentary. Upon arrival in Morpeth guests have a couple of hours at their own leisure to wander down cobbled streets to find colonial sandstone buildings occupied by modern and inviting cafes, pubs, galleries, museums, boutiques and antique shops. Unwind on the return journey down stream, and enjoy afternoon tea or a refreshing cool drink form the vessel's fully licensed bar. You can call 0400 381 787 for more information.

Playing 26 August to 9 September. This play captures the very essence of American fundamental beliefs which resonate today in the political climate in America and around the world. Based on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, two legal giants come head to head in a battle over the right to censorship in education. Issues involving the separation between church and state continue to play a part in the legal controversies to this day. This trial could be yesterday; it could be tomorrow. Can we ever take the entitlement of freedom of speech for granted? With major political movements still garnering massive divisions in today’s culture this play on the separation of church and state remains powerful and promises an exhilarating night of theatre. Newcastle’s West End The West End is considered Newcastle's rawest precinct with a selection of new businesses willing to push the boundaries. Here you will find a bakery that specialises in sourdough cooking classes alongside a small cafe with furniture made from recycled bus seats. Many creatives co-inhabit workspaces, while leading professional firms have set up shop in restored historical buildings like the the old local bank. Here you can find a wide mix of cafes and restaurants including some of Newcastle's finest, several independent art galleries, a potpourri of retail outlets, a range of professional offices, churches, hotels and motels, and many residential investment properties. There's a large shopping centre known as Marketown which is busy building more levels for residential use and a few large franchise stores. You will still find a handful of empty buildings that have been earmarked for development and the West has been labelled Newcastle's future business hub.

LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST By William Shakespeare Playing 7 to 21 October Ferdinand, the King of Navarre and his three lords, Berowne, Longaville and Dumaine, swear an oath to scholarship, which includes fasting and avoiding contact with women for three years. They are joined by Don Armado, a Spaniard visiting the King’s court, and all five embark on their three years of contemplative, celibate study. Meanwhile, the Princess of France arrives to visit the King and negotiate the return of Aquitane, taken from her father by Ferdinand. Because of his oath he cannot receive the Princess and her entourage but agrees to visit them where they are encamped outside of his castle. What ensues is a timeless comedy about love, honour duty and desire. Shakespeare takes all those smitten by Cupid’s arrows on a merry romp, that leaves one laughing at the absurdities of sprouting meaningless platitudes in the face of unbridled love and desire.

BEATLEMANIA set to Sweep Australia The international hit tribute show, Beatlemania on Tour, will see audiences relive the heyday of one of the world’s favourite pop acts when it rolls out across Australia. The spectacular two-hour show recreates a true Beatles experience with stunning costumes, stateof-the-art lighting and production, replica instruments, and all songs performed with exquisite attention to detail and in their original key. Over 30 of the Beatles biggest and most treasured hits will be performed live on stage. Making up the band are four Australian performers, Cameron Charters who sings live as Paul McCartney, Zac Coombs as John Lennon, Brent McMullen as George Harrison and Ben Harper as Ringo. “There is so much detail to get right for a show of this caliber,” said Charters. “Aside from getting the music spot-on, we need to nail the characters, voices and movements. I have even learnt how

to play bass with my left hand, as that’s the way Paul McCartney played. It’s a lot of work but it’s worth it when you see the end result and know that real Beatles fans will appreciate it!” Following sold-out shows across the US, Canada, Dubai, Hong Kong, New Zealand and South Africa, Beatlemania on Tour proved to be a must-see spectacular for all Beatles fans! The town has been bustling with a variety of industries since the early 1800’s and there are many beautiful historical buildings and attractions to remind of its long history. Good sandstone was quarried close to the town in the 1800’s and used in the local Anglican and Catholic churches, houses and stores. The Old Rectory and historic St. John’s Anglican Church are a wonderful example of these building. The Old Rectory has been lovingly restored and is a beautiful venue for a high tea or other special events. In its early days, a tannery and a steam sawmill were also built, and boat and shipbuilding, farming and dairying became important industries. The business centre developed in King Street, adjacent to the river, where many of the old two storey timber shops and residences still stand today. Nowadays you

The Williams River is a popular skiing spot and hosts annual skiing events and boat racing, facilitated by two boat ramps close to the city centre. Riverside Park is located adjacent to the Hunter River on Hunter Street just a short walk off William Street, the main street in Raymond Terrace. This park is ideal for a rest spot or for a picnic with its scenic river views. The park boasts a great playground, barbecue and picnic facilities and a public wharf. Maitland Based Chocolatier wins Gold at the Australian Fine Food Awards It’s no secret that the Hunter region is well known for its excellent wine and outstanding restaurants. What is less known is that the region is also gaining a reputation for Australia’s best chocolate. That new reputation is largely due to Maitland based boutique chocolatier, Donna Archer and her store Donarch Fine Chocolate. In 2016, less than a few months after opening their doors, Donna Archer stunned the country when she won a Gold Medal in the prestigious Royal Sydney Chocolate Show. On that occasion, her signature “Raspberry Heart” achieved one of only two gold medals awarded. Proving that her previous achievement was no fluke, Donna Archer has recently added to her growing list of accolades with a massive haul of medals at the Australian Fine Food awards in Melbourne. Entering four of her mouthwatering creations, Donarch Fine Chocolate walked away with no less than four prestigious medals. Her signature “Raspberry Heart” won Gold and achieved one of the highest scores in the show. The “Salted Caramel” also achieved a gold medal while her delightful “Honey Cinnamon” creation was awarded Silver. The Donarch Fine Chocolate “Milk Honeycomb” (made using Honey form Donna’s own bee hives) was also awarded a bronze medal. With such incredible achievements in such a short space of time, it is no surprise that Donna Archer and her “Donarch Fine Chocolate” label is quickly establishing herself with a reputation as a true talent within the boutique chocolate making industry. Trained in traditional European

techniques, Donna has an unrelenting focus on quality. When creating her mouth-watering masterpieces, she only uses the finest chocolate from around the world and compliments it by using premium quality ingredients. Her passion for perfection is relentless and Donna’s remarkable talent shines through in all of the products that she makes. Despite the accolades however, Donna Archer remains humble and operates her amazing store with son Paul in a truly family and community focused operation. That said, the minute one enters their Tenambit store, they are immersed in a chocolate experience that words cannot adequately describe. From the ordinary person to the die-hard chocaholic, a visit to Donarch Fine Chocolate is an experience to savour and celebrate. While individual chocolates are their specialty, every taste and budget is catered for. All products are beautifully presented and made with a sense of pride that can only be found in a small boutique business. Located on the outskirts of Maitland in the small village of Tenambit (not far from Morpeth), Donarch Fine Chocolate and their boutique chocolatier, Donna Archer, have put the Hunter region (particularly the Maitland area) firmly on the chocolate lovers map. A visit to Donarch Fine Chocolate is a truly amazing experience and a must visit destination for tourists and locals alike. www.hunterimag.com.au

A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 30

Mark October 20 – 28th 2017 in your diaries and find your way to Wollombi in the Hunter Valley to experience the mastery of wordsmith Willy Russell as Valley Artists present Shirley Valentine. Valley Artists is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this iconic play in ‘The Harp of Erin Theatre’ housed in the historic Wollombi General Store built in 1852. You will be transported to Liverpool in England in the late 1980’s to hear the stories of many, the lessons of some and the discoveries of one courageous and hilarious woman. Director Robyn Blackwell said “Shirley Valentine is a play that continues to take audiences on an emotional journey that is both humorous and poignant and as relevant today as it was 30 years ago when Willy Russell wrote it.” The rehearsal process has allowed Cath Patterson to explore the author’s insightful observations on conformity and the sense of self that we develop. Patterson is perfect for this role – she has previously played a magnificent Rita in Educating Rita. Cath hails from Preston in England and relates strongly to cultural references and English idioms throughout the play. Valley Artists is proud to present Cath Patterson in this wonderful role and invites audiences to join us to see Shirley Valentine brought to life again. WHAT AN HONOUR for Handmade in the Hunter Markets On the 24th of June His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (ret'd), Governor of New South Wales, and his wife Mrs Linda Hurley, honoured Handmade in the Hunter Markets at Kevin Sobels Wines with their visit. The Governor and Mrs. Hurley, as well as the staff who accompanied them, explored the market and purchased several of the locally made products available there. Governor Hurley was especially interested in Tomalina Ridge’s Blue Ribbon awarded honey from the recent Sydney Easter Show, since the Governor is an avid beekeeper with three hives of his own. This was followed by an impromptu pizza party that lasted all afternoon with Kevin and Margaret Sobels from Kevin Sobels Wines and Karen Rowe, owner/manager of Handmade in the Hunter Markets. The Governor and his wife were particularly pleased to find so many hand-made and homegrown products in the one market. This is why they specifically chose to include the market in their itinerary during their monthly regional tours.

The Romantics Art Exhibition 19th – 22nd October 2017 Morpeth Gallery 10am-5pm 5 Green Street, Morpeth Admission is free. Meet five artists who call themselves the Romantics. Werner Filipich, James Hough, Man Mannix, Ramon WardThompson and Ian Hansen will be showcasing their works and talent at Morpeth Gallery this October. Originating in the late 18th century, romanticism is an artistic movement stressing strong emotion, imagination and freedom. Artists of this period aim to capture these ideals in their work, hoping to inspire an emotional response in their audience.

Throughout James Hough’s Hunter Valley based artistic career, his deep passion for Australian wildlife and the environment has combined with his other love: Fine Art. James’ work reflects the deep respect he has for the natural environment. He revels in the idea of his work capturing one particular moment in time, favouring emotion rather than correctness.

Marine artist Ian Hansen’s paintings portray his deep love of the sea and ships, particularly square-riggers, which today are the romantic period of sea travel. Ian draws his inspiration and great understanding of the sea from the ships he has seen throughout his lifetime, from Navy ships to his own yacht. Ian began painting the romantics of the sea in watercolours when he was eight, and graduated to oils at the age of eleven.

From its inception, romanticism was preoccupied with landscape. It evokes feelings of nostalgia, stirs life’s mysteries and portrays grandeur of nature.

No other Australian painter presents the harsh Australian bush or cold city streets with such softness and subtlety, like Ramon Ward-Thompson. Ramon captures the soft mood of any setting, whether it is the urban jungle of New York, or the flowing streams of The Cotswold’s in England. Each is romantic and intimate.

Werner Filipich is one of Australia’s last traditional artists who practices in the true tradition of the Heidelberg School of Impressionist Artists: packing up his easel and ‘going bush’, painting in the environment he wishes to capture. Werner takes regular painting trips to refresh his eye on the colours of the natural environment from season to season.

Australian Living Legend, Max Mannix paints stories or ‘yarns’ based on his years growing up in Victorian country towns and working on cattle stations in the Queensland outback. Max’s time spent living in these rural landscapes with colourful characters have given him endless inspiration enabling him to depict life in a lighthearted vein with keen insight and gentle humour. Hunter Valley Wine Country will feature in this exhibition. Trevor Richards - Morpeth Gallery

1 September THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

Civic Theatre, 375 Hunter Street, Newcastle. Presented by Bell Shakespeare Money makes the world go around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, it takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice. This masterfully envisioned production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.
