From The Editor Welcome to the September/October edition of the FSC iMag. Spring has well and truly arrived, and the Far South Coast has exploded with colour as the temperature rises after a cold winter. A spectacular natural phenomenon that happens during spring is the southern migration of whales past the Far South Coast. Travelling slowly with their calves, several species of whales feed and play as they head down to Antarctica for the summer. There are numerous local whale watching tours that will deliver an experience you'll never forget. The Eden Whale Festival, held on 3rd - 5th November is an annual celebration of Eden and its connection to the whales.

Presented by the Batemans Bay Tourism and Business Chamber, Sculpture on Clyde brings art to the Bay. Kick-start your spring with ReBoot in Bermagui, a weekend focussed on fitness, good health and good food for all the family Held on 23 - 24 September, it's a chance to shake off the winter blues in a stunning coastal location. For a touch of local history, Montreal Goldfield is holding its Heritage Day on October 7th - it's always a fascinating event with gold-panning, kids craft and a bullock team! Granite Town, Moruya's funky little festival on September 23rd at the Moruya Racecourse, is one funk-filled day with fantastic music, food trucks and kids activities from midday til midnight. Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

The Rag Tag Fleet exhibition at Eden Killer Whale Museum and those classed by the defence force as medically unfit to take the helm. Charged with taking ammunition, supplies and troops through mostly unchartered waterways, these civilians faced enemy fire just the same as regular defence forces. However it is only within the last decade that their contribution to the American and Australian war effort has been officially recognised. Eden Killer Whale Museum’s latest exhibition The Rag Tag Fleet commemorates the 75th anniversary of the formation of this unusual fleet of ships, and remembers the men from the South Coast of NSW who served on them. The Rag Tag Fleet is on display at Eden Killer Whale Museum from 5th June 2017 – 4th February 2018. www.killerwhalemuseum.com.au

The Rag Tag Fleet was a phrase penned by Ladislaw Reday, one of a group of Americans who came to Australia in 1942 as part of the Mission X team. With the Japanese defeating US forces in the Philippines, the next strategy was to drive Japanese forces out of New Guinea, and without an available fleet at hand, the Rag Tag Fleet was born. The Mission X team scoured Australia’s eastern seaboard and New Zealand inspecting and procuring an unlikely fleet of attack vessels for the US Army. Known as the US Small Ships Section, they included wooden trawlers, scows, sailing craft and even a paddle-wheeler. While a fleet was beginning to be assembled, there was the realisation that crew were needed. Those fit enough were already engaged in the war, so it was left to the young, the old

With binoculars to share and information handouts, our team of staff and volunteers will give you the essential tools to SPOT THAT WHALE. Wednesday from 10am - 12pm. With around 45 different types of cetaceans in our waters, we will help you find Humpbacks, Southern Rights, dolphins and maybe minkes. See And Hear Whales At Eden With Cat Balou Cruises Australian Geographic named Eden as the Number 1 whale watching destination in Australia for 2016, and there is no better way to watch these giants of the deep than with the award winning whale watching vessel, CAT BALOU. Cat Balou Cruises owner/operators, Gordon & Ros Butt, are celebrating their 28th year of whale watching at Eden, making them the most experienced whale watching operators in NSW. They take pride in providing the highest level of customer service and safety and customer satisfaction is reflected by return clientele and numerous awards won over the years. CAT BALOU CRUISES have been inducted into the South Coast Tourism Hall of Fame and Trip Advisor have awarded CAT BALOU their Certificate of Excellence in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Whale watching cruises operate daily until late November, with a guarantee of seeing whales on both the half day and Family whale watching cruises. CAT BALOU has a 99% success rate in seeing whales. In the rare event of not seeing whales at close range, a return free cruise or a refund of half the fare is offered. Cat Balou has a hydrophone aboard to enable passengers to hear whales singing. It is mainly Humpback whales seen on their southern migration, often accompanied by their young calves, however most years other species can be sighted, including Southern Right, Dwarf Minke, Bryde's and occasionally Orca. This year a record numbers of Humpbacks,

12

www.monthlyimag.com.au

estimated at over 20,000 are predicted to migrate along the eastern Australian coast. Cat Balou is a stable 16mt catamaran licensed to carry 72 passengers, however numbers are limited to around 60 so everyone has plenty of room to move about. There is inside seating for all passengers and the upper deck and large bow area provide excellent viewing and photo opportunities. A live commentary is given throughout and complimentary refreshments including hot soup, biscuits and cheese are provided. Unlike most of the other ports in the area there is direct ocean access from the port of Eden with no sand bars to cross, therefore passengers are not required to wear life jackets. At times there are opportunities to watch whales from shore, but nothing compares to seeing these majestic creatures at close range. Seals and dolphins plus many species of sea birds, including Albatross, are also usually seen on the cruises. On selected afternoons Cat Balou also offer their 2hr Twofold Bay Discovery Cruises . This cruise explores the southern section of Twofold Bay, viewing Boyd’s Tower, Edrom Lodge, Boydtown, the woodchip mill, naval wharf and fishing fleet. If whales are within the bay it’s an added bonus! For bookings and timetable for all cruises Phone 0427 260 489 or 0427 962 027. The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafés, restaurants, retailers, designers, pubs, a bakery, coffee roastery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an oldfashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring the floodplain and former racecourse. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and an array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

16

www.monthlyimag.com.au

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, taking a scenic flight, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Spend a great family day at Magic Mountain Merimbula's Magic Mountain is a great way to entertain a family of all ages, with our diamond python roller coaster, toboggans, grand prix cars, water slides and so much more. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of goods every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. It provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre.

Secrets of Treasures of Australian Art 1890 - 1950 13th July, 2017 - 30th September, Bega Valley Regional Gallery The Howard Hinton Collection, in the sheer breadth of its cover of Australian art from the 1880s to the 1940s, is the only collection of its kind in regional Australia. Howard Hinton, an avid collector of art and visitor of artists' studios, developed his collection for the purpose of encouraging artists, educating students, and for the benefit and enjoyment of the public. The Collection reflects Hinton's early love for Victorian travel paintings as well as respect for the conventions of Australian landscape art. The Lindsay family is strongly represented as is Streeton, Roberts, Gruner, Hilder, Murch and Feint. StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka VISITOR INFORMATION Tathra Beach Supermarket 1/65 Andy Poole Dr, Tathra www.tathratourism.com.au

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during an East Coast Low that hit the region in 2016, but with repairs completed, the Wharf has resumed its role as a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike.

30

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. Extensive renovations at The Tathra Hotel are due to be completed by spring 2017.

Walk the scenic Kangarutha Track this spring If you’re keen to do some bush-walking, try the 9km Kangarutha Track, along the spectacular northern shores of Bournda National Park. You can begin at the northern end of the track at Kianinny Bay near Tathra, or at the Wallagoot Lake Boat Club at the southern end. The track takes in the rugged coastline, with many small sandy or pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs, but not many options for swimming. If the full 9km, 5 hour walk is too hard, you can tackle a section, for example, a 1.7km walk from Kianinny Bay to Boulder Bay, or a 1.8km walk from Wallagoot Lake Boat Club to Turingal Head, or walk half way to White Rock Quarry. Another option is Turingal Head to Games Bay, where the track passes through a secluded old dairy farm area; this 5km return walk is rated as medium, and takes 2 hours. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

34

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.

South Coast Leather - proudly supporting Australian made Built in 1913, the shop that houses South Coast Leather started out as a grain store, then became a butcher's shop. In fact the original chopping block is still on display today. Today South Coast Leather stocks quality leather goods, from key rings to luggage and everything in between. Brands you'll find include leading labels such as Outback, Pack Saddle, Lambada, Modapelle Leather to name just a few. Classic leather belts are handmade on the premises. Beautiful fashion, hats,

CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Try fishing at Mystery Bay Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in to the Dromedary Hotel

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. The village has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Reva at Tilba has divine jewellery from Australia and around the world, and Gulaga Gallery has hemp and bamboo clothing.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rushww Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous Cultural and Heritage Tourism awards, and was presented with South Coast Tourism's Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award in 2011. Mogo is renowned for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.
