The key to driving traffic to blogs and websites is creating compelling stories that get shared on social media and are made for reading on mobile devices. Over five fast-paced days, participants will understand how to approach, plan and create multimedia stories that shout ‘share me!’ on social media. You’ll dive into mobile video and audio, create charts, infographics, maps, timelines, interactive images and harness the power of social media to connect and command authority in your online community. The Change your Story NOW programme is brought to Nigeria by The Journalism Clinic and delivered by international journalism trainer Dan Mason. Want to be stretched, innovate and learn? What will I learn? •

How to create multimedia stories and write headlines your audience will want to share on social media. Story forms include Q&As, lists, quizzes, interactive images, maps and panoramas

Data journalism … understand how to capture data, clean it using spreadsheets and visualise data into punchy charts and infographics

Learn how to record, edit and share audio on the go (including apps for liveblogging)

Pick up on some social media best practice and learn how to bring together social media into a story that can be viewed online or embedded in a website or blog (curation)

Stay organised and collaborate online with a handful of simple free tools and apps.

Photography. Learn the essentials of mobile photography and change the way 
 you take pictures in your professional and personal life. Become an Instagram rockstar.

Create audio slideshows with images, music and/or voice

Understand the simple video forms that convey powerful stories online

Shoot video interviews that look professional online

Understand the key principles of video storytelling and learn to shoot video that explains an issue or tells a human story

Edit your video using an easy-to-learn but fully-featured video editor

Note: Participants with both Android and iPhones are welcome. The iMovie app (free with newer models) is recommended for editing with iPhone and iPad. Participants using Android will learn how to edit using laptop-based video editing software that works on PC and Macs.

Who's it for? Journalists from the broadcast or print media, and communications professionals in the corporate, NGO and public sectors. The programme would suit those with at least some professional experience of journalism or communications, or a passion for citizen journalism. You’ll be mustard keen to develop your online skills and want to learn how to turn your mobile into a lean, mean journalism machine.

What will I need to bring? All participants will need access to a laptop or computer with wifi, and should bring along their smartphones and tablets. (Please remember to bring cables and chargers). Participants are encouraged to use the Google Chrome browser during the workshop, and, if required, should download it free prior to the workshop. Gmail and Facebook accounts will be important - remember to bring passwords! A limited number of mounts for iPhone and smaller Android mobiles, plus tripods, will be available. Please bring your own if you have them.

About Dan Mason Dan is an international trainer, specialising in online, mobile and social media ‌ and enjoys the Otunba title given to him by a group of talented Nigerian journalists during his work in Lagos and Abuja. Much of his professional life is spent training in countries including Malawi, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Iraq, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Georgia, China, the Caribbean, Israel, UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Cyprus, as well as UK. In addition to training journalists, he works with NGOs, governments, corporate communicators and civil society projects. Before launching his training consultancy, Dan was an award-winning editor-in-chief and CEO of daily newspapers and converging news operations in the UK for 25 years.
