Getting Nigerian Journalists Social Media-Savvy Co-ordination: EverythingJournalism group, a cyber hangout on the professional network, LinkedIn, for serious media professionals and consumers of media messages, in association with its adjunct, The Journalism Clinic, with a vision to raise and nurture the next crop of first-rate journalists in Nigeria. Target: Journalists, bloggers, students of media studies and journalism, media executives and everyone interested and concerned about the future of journalism in Nigeria, particularly in the context of evolving digital technologies. Premise: You are most likely to count on your finger tips Nigerian journalists who are actively using the social networks for news gathering. Okay, that statistics might be an exaggeration but it is undisputable that a majority of Nigerian journalists are stuck in the old ways of pracitising journalism. As it were, the Social Media Bus has left Nigerian journalists and journalism behind. Why is this so? What will trigger a change? Or there is no need for a paradigm shift? 3

How does this situation affect the fortunes of the media houses that these journalists work for? Resource persons who are grounded in the subjects under focus will find answers to these and many questions. It will be highly interactive, with engaging questions from the audience. Live streaming on Twitter - @Clinic4Journos, #NGJournalists - and post event conversations on the EverythingJournalism group will keep the theme in focus for quite a while.

SESSION ONE:

Does One Platform Suit All?

W

hat is the best way for journalists to engage with their audiences to enhance their productivity? Why should I be on Twitter while I am active on Facebook? Would LinkedIn or Google+ help me better on the job as a journalist, especially with newsgathering or crowd-sourcing? Is it only when I can’t find space in the mainstream media that I should blog? What’s blogging, anyway? These are the kinds of questions you hear in not a few newsrooms. Is there a wrong way or a right way? These and more questions will be answered during this session. Panelists: 1. Tolu Ogunlesi. Blogger. Columnist. Partner, @WoweMediaNG. She won the Nigerian Media Merit Award’s Power Reporter of the Year 2013. 3.
