ew Year is around the corner. We are very excited to turn our heads on 2014 and so looking forward to 2015. Like every year you write down your resolutions… you do some soul searching for the if’s and if not’s. You hammer yourself for your wrong decisions and try to resolve your outstanding issues. You look back on the past year and try to figure out what went wrong. You want to sort out your baggage and rearrange your closets.

But finally you set all these problems aside and think on a positive note, as this is what New Year is all about. It’s about new beginnings, new relationships, new styles and a new You. A new look on things with an older you. A new perspective on life in general.

This issue is all about the holiday spirit, the decorations, the travel, the soul searching, the positivity and many more of the usual fashion and makeup. Enjoy the festivities and see you next year !

HOW TO...

HOW TO START OVER YOUR FRIENDSHIPS Friends can be like a second family, or even better, a family you actually and consciously chose. Sometimes the best therapy you can ever have is a time out with your friends. But sometimes friendships can take the wrong turn, become more of an energy drainer rather than a therapeutic chat over coffee and dessert. If you wake up one day and realize that your best friend is mistreating you, putting you down, and killing any positivity in your life, then you need to figure out how to put an end to the behaviour, or move on. WHEN DID THEY CHANGE? Were your friends always energy sucking vampires that put you down and you were just too nice to notice? Or did something happen and caused a change in their behaviour Figure it out to be able to decide on how you should deal with the situation. SAVE THEIR SOULS Did your own behaviour change? Are you a weaker person now compared to when you met them? Did you stop standing up for yourself? Did you lose your confidence? All these things can lead to changes in your friend’s behavior with you; thinking less of yourself can reflect on others. Try to let them know that you are bothered by their behaviour, talk to them, and try to get things back on the right track. KEEP DISTANCE If they are taking you for granted, mistreating you, or simply drain you, then you might want to consider limiting your contact. Take a step back, give yourself time to breath, think, and evaluate your friendship. AND STAY OUT! If all rescuing fails, its time to let them go. Friends should appreciate, love, and support you,. If they don’t do that, and only make you feel terrible, then you need to move on... without them.

DON’T KILL AN INNOCENT Just because your friend is passing through a lot, needs your support, and needs to talk her heart out, cry, and complain, doesn’t mean that she is a blood sucking, energy draining vampire. Be there for your friends like you expect them to be there for you. DON’T BE A BITCH Keeping away negativity from your life doesn’t give you the right to be a total bitch. Keeping them away doesn’t mean that you should be mean to them or hate them now, despite all there will always be memories to cherish. Keep your distance, but also keep your manners. GATHER SUNSHINE Now that your energy killer is gone you can better focus on improving yourself, and gathering positive energy from every possible source. Find positive people to hang out with, new friends that care about you and support you. Go out more, network, and meet new people who share your values and interests. Be more careful this time who your let in into your word, and who you should keep your guards up with. Be selective, but don’t be afraid to let new people in. SET UP A RADAR Keep scanning for energy drainers and make sure they don’t get to you. SHINE It’s a huge step realizing that your friends are draining you, but its a gigantic step realizing that you are a energy sucking vampire yourself. Make sure you give enough to your friends, always be there for them, support them, and dont put them down (even if you think you are being funny, honest, or realistic). Just as your friends are meant to add positivity to your life, so should you.

LOVE ADVICE

LEFT BEHIND ON NYE Dear Lana, Yes, you should be worried not because you will not spend New Year’s Eve together but for many other reasons!!

1)

I’ve been dating a wonderful guy for the past couple of months and things are going really well for us. My problem might seem trivial to many, but it’s really eating me up. This will be our first New Year’s Eve as a couple and the first ever for me with a partner. I was super excited about what wear, where to go and really looking forward to spending it together, until he dropped a bombshell on me. He will be spending NYE in London with the boys!! He didn’t bother to check if I’m going to be okay with it or even pretend to be just a little bit upset for leaving me out on that special day. On the contrary, he was too enthusiastic and I just couldn’t share his feelings. Needless to say, he made it specifically clear in the past that he doesn’t like me going out alone, without him. Not sure if I’m over reacting, but maybe this day is not as significant for him. I still believe he should have run it by me first or at least considered my feelings. Deep down I wanted him to WANT to spend NYE with me. Should I be worried?

The two of you are not on the same wavelength; you are clearly committed and you are making plans that include him while he has not switched to relationship mode yet! He is still making plans alone and he still prefers having fun with his friend to romancing you.

2)

He is exhibiting some jerk-alert signals; he wants to go out with his friends and have fun while you stay at home with your tears running down your cheeks! This is very alarming unless that is how you envision your future. He also told you his plans after all the bookings were made! He did not tell you about his wishes in advance and he did not share with you the details of his trip as he was making his plans.

3)

You should also be worried about being too attached, having too many expectations, and thinking that he is “the one” before he has proven his sincerity. You just do not assume that you are committed to someone and that he is committed to you because you dated for a couple of months and “things are going well for you. Trust, love, and attachment have to be earned; you do not just throw your heart at any man you like. I want you to ask yourself, why in a couple of months do you expect this man to be committed to you? When it comes to dating, I usually refer to Dr. John Gray’s book “Mars and Venus on a Date” where he sums up the five stages of dating: Attraction, Uncertainty, Exclusivity, Intimacy, and Commitment. You can read more about the five stages of dating online; in the meantime, I would like you to examine those stages and identify where the two of you stand. Ideally speaking, you should do that together but for now, you could do that exercise alone and double-check your expectations.

PERKS OF BEING SINGLE ON NEW YEAR’S EVE Spending New Year’s Eve solo, though heart-breaking for some, could turn out to be one of the most positive and self-fulfilling experiences one can have. INTERVIEW

NOW IN EGYPT Looking for a fun and enjoyable way to exercise after desperately failing to commit to any workout routine? I recently stumbled over a new aerobics class called Piloxing (a combination of pilates and boxing). It was initiated by Hollywood celebrity trainer Viveca Jensen and I found out that classes are now available in Egypt by the only certified Piloxing trainer in the country, Yasmine Said. WHAT IS PILOXING? A non-stop, cardio fusion of standing pilates, boxing and dance that will push you past your limits ! Piloxing® cardio fusion incorporates cutting edge research and fitness techniques to burn maximum calories, build lean muscles, and increase stamina. HOW DID YOU FIRST KNOW ABOUT PILOXING? I was looking for something new to combine my love of music, dance & rigorous workout at the same time. I did a lot of research till I encountered Piloxing. WHAT AND WHERE DID YOU STUDY TO BECOME THE ONLY CERTIFIED PILOXING TRAINER IN EGYPT? I attended a 4 month course here in Egypt at Safe Academy & became a certified aerobics group instructor then I headed to the UK where I attended a Piloxing workshop and became the only certified Piloxing instructor in Egypt.

HOW ARE EGYPTIANS PERCEIVING PILOXING? At the beginning, I was a bit skeptical that Piloxing classes wouldn’t catch up here in Egypt because it’s totally new and different to any of the other more familiar aerobics classes. Thank God, so far all the participants who come to the class love it and show great enthusiasm for becoming Piloxers. HERE’S THE SCHEDULE: 1-GARDENIA: Monday 10:30 AM Tuesday 11:00 AM Monday 08:30 PM 2-GOLD’S GYM Wednesday 09:30 AM 3-FIGHT & FITNESS FACTORY (ARKAN) Sunday 11:00 AM

HEALTH MATTERS

good

FEEL

FOOD

“You are what you eat.” We’ve all heard this motto before, but how true is it? How can food improve our mood? It all comes down to the brain. A healthy cognitive system is key to regulating moods, while certain nutrients have a profound impact on maintaining normal brain function .To date, researchers have studied the correlation between food and the brain and identified nine nutrients that can combat depression and boost our mood: calcium, chromium, folate, iron, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and zinc. Try food rich in one of these nutrients for a mid-day pick-me-up, to promote long-term happiness. .Instead of reaching out for that tempting bar of chocolate or that irresistible piece of cake...even worse treating yourself to a processed or junk meal thinking this is comfort food, look for alternative food rich in any of these nine nutrients and boost that cranky mood! Food isn’t the enemy and has never been; the media has brain washed our society into heavily relying on fast, processed, chemically treated food. Your happiness comes from your well -being, feed your body with the nutrients it needs and eat your way to joy and happiness.

Another underestimated mood boosting therapy is exercise; people who exercise regularly, are naturally happier than the so-called potato couches.. Nature has built the answer within the human body, regular exercise acts as a natural mood booster.. You are probably familiar with the euphoria athletes often feel after sustained exertion, and perhaps you have felt your mood elevating after a workout or a brisk walk. However, the exercise high doesn’t depend on how long the workout is. In fact, the best results come from doing a little each day. So instead of wasting time watching TV , dedicate a little time each day engaging in an activity; whether it’s a sport or hitting the gym or a light jog or swim. Daily exercise becomes a self-reinforcing habit motivated by positive feelings. Once your brain associates workouts with happiness, you’ll wonder how you managed so long without those running shoes.

RED VELVET PANCAKES WITH CREAM CHEESE GLAZE YIELD: 16 PANCAKES

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 3 Tbsp cocoa powder • 2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp salt • 2 cups milk • 2 Tbsp white vinegar • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 1/2 Tbsp red food coloring • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 1/3 cup salted butter, melted • 1 recipe Cream Cheese Glaze, recipe follows • fresh raspberries and mint leaves, for garnish (optional) CREAM CHEESE GLAZE • 6 oz cream cheese, softened • 6 Tbsp butter, softened • 2 cups powdered sugar • 1/2 cup milk, plus more if desired • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract DIRECTIONS Preheat an electric non-stick griddle to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt, set aside. Measure out milk into a liquid measuring cup and whisk in vinegar, allow mixture to rest for 2 minutes. Pour milk mixture into a separate large mixing bowl and add in sugar, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla and melted butter. Whisk mixture until well combine. While whisking, slowly add in dry ingredients and mix just until combine. Butter griddle if necessary and pour about a 1/4 - 1/3 cup batter (depending on how large you want your pancakes) at a time onto hot griddle (you can also use the back of measuring cup or spoon to lightly spread batter from center out to the edge a bit so they aren’t thicker in the center then they are on the edges). Cook until bubbles begin to appear on the top surface of the pancakes then flip and cook opposite side until pancake is cooked through (I didn’t want the tops of the pancakes to be brownish red so I flipped them a little earlier than I normally do with pancakes, I didn’t wait for many bubbles). Serve warm with Cream Cheese Glaze and garnish with fresh raspberries and mint leaves if desired.

CREAM CHEESE GLAZE In a mixing bowl, using an electric hand mixer set on medium speed, blend together cream cheese and butter until well combine and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add in remaining ingredients and mix about 1 minute until well combine, adding additional milk to thin if desired. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator.

INTO THE DEEP

LIBERATING YOUR INNER SELF Have you ever wanted to wear something but were afraid of how others might judge you for doing so? Have you ever had an idea that was unpopular and so you kept it to yourself for fear of being socially outcast? Have you ever wanted to love someone but knew that society would never accept your relationship? If so, then you, like all of us, has felt the pressure of conforming to social norms. 28 IDENTITY DECEMBER 2014

S

ocial norms are the ideas, beliefs, and behaviors that society expects of us if we are to “fit in”. They can serve positive functions – like helping to maintain social order and provide social stability – but they can also serve negative functions – like constraining our sense of identity and self-expression. The balance between feeling control over one’s own life while still adhering to the sometimes oppressive nature of social expectations can be a delicate balancing act that is likely to leave us all in a state of confusion or despair at some point or another. Some forms of social control are imposed for positive reasons. The government, for example, does so to help provide for the public safety. Religion provides a moral framework and can be a valuable blueprint for how to live our lives. The education system can socialize us into the values and norms of our society. All of this can be good. But all of this can also be bad if we do not personally fit the mold for what each of those institutions expects of us. The result can be frustration, anxiety, and a sense of limitation. It is important to note that the first step in gaining a greater sense of control over our own lives, even in the face of outside systems of control, is to understand that we can. We absolutely can. One of the most critical things that keeps most of us from feeling in control is the fear of social rejection and isolation. We are afraid that if we express who we really are, what we really think, or how we really feel, and any of those go against the social norms, then we will be labeled as deviant and outcast. This fear of social rejection can be a powerful one. Some of the greatest figures in history, however, have been social outcasts at one point or another.Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and nearly all of the great religious prophets had to face the barriers imposed by society in order to take control of their own lives and have the strength to change the world. All were deemed as “deviant” in their early years yet all had tremendous positive impacts on the societies around them and the world at large.

where, and the when of the situation. There are no universals of either social acceptance or rejection among the world’s societies. The prospect that there is no normal, no inherent right, and no perfect mold for which to strive might seem unsettling at first but it can, in fact, be quite liberating. If there is no normal, then there is no abnormal. If there is no inherent right, then there is no inherent wrong (perhaps with a few exceptions). If there is no perfect mold then there is no reason we can’t be happy with who we are. One key to feeling liberated from social pressure is to remember that everyone is deviant somewhere and no one is deviant everywhere. Non-Muslims can face challenges in Egypt but Muslims can face challenges in much of Western Europe. Homosexuals are routinely arrested (or worse) in many countries of the world and yet same-sex marriage is legal in a growing number of other countries. Wearing a veil can make you an insider, or an outsider, depending on where you are and who you are around. Being thin can bring social rewards in some places while being voluptuous is socially preferred in others. Nearly every aspect of our identities is accepted in some place and treated with suspicion in others. Another important element in feeling more in control of our own lives is to allow others greater control of their own. If we want to enjoy the freedom of personal control and expression, then the first thing we must do is be willing to grant the same privilege to those around us. If we take a “live and let live” attitude to the personal expression of others, then we ourselves we will be let to live. The key to personal liberation lies first and foremost in liberating others. So does all of the above mean that we need to live in an anarchist society with no rules and regulations? Or that we should turn a blind eye when someone is causing harm to others believing it is their right to do so? Or that institutions of social control are all negative and oppressive factors in our lives? Absolutely not. What it does mean is that we should be more aware of what social control is, why it is, and how we can utilize it as a key to personal growth rather than a tool of social oppression.

A sociologist will tell you that nothing is inherently good or inherently bad. Whether something is seen as right or wrong is determined entirely by the who, the what, the

WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR FALL WARDROBE! I do believe that these days are the optimum time to shop for fall 2015. Although you have to be up to date and upgrade your wardrobe, you have to make use of your old pieces. I am pretty sure that mixing and matching the old and new stuff can absolutely assist you to get the perfect outfit and to be fashionable in this winter. Here are some ideas that can guide you while shopping:

METALLIC AND GOLD: You can add up a metallic/ gold jacket or bottom to an après midi outfit.

VELVET: Adding a velvet piece will definitely shine any dull outfit. I do recommend wearing it with leather.

EMERALD GREEN: This color can turn any piece to an extremely chic and classy one.

COLORED FUR: We are used to wear a brown or black fur in the past seasons, but now you can wear your multi favourite colours.

RED ALL OVER AND COATS: Actually dark colors are always considered to be for winter, but this season the red colored coats are in.

LEOPARD PRINT: In winter most of the ladies prefer to wear an animal print piece of cloth, leopard can be the winner of this season.

POINT OF VIEW

MORE ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER... IN HAPPINESS

42 IDENTITY DECEMBER 2014

I’ve been doing some soul searching lately. I began wondering about mankind’s infinite quest for happiness, what does it actually take to be happy? If we are all constantly pursuing happiness, why are some of us more successful than others? Surely everyone has their own definition of happiness. Sadly true, people usually seek happiness in material possessions rather than cherished life experiences giving too much weight to what they own. More belongings is still not the answer. In this day and age people are caught in the vicious loophole of perception and judgment! They imagine that mimicking others’ material quests for happiness will render them happy too. But hang on! People are different; they have different goals, different ambitions, and different emotions. How is it possible that everybody can follow the same path to happiness? It’s true some people might place their happiness solely in ‘acquiring’ gadgets, or accomplishing tasks on their to-do list, but again, they are only fooling themselves. Think about the current consumer behaviour; it doesn’t really matter what we buy. We just buy, buy and buy. We hardly don’t create, produce or discover. We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t care about! At the end of the year, we find ourselves swamped in mounting credit card debts. Most of us are victims of consumerism but to varying degrees. . Consumerism can actually take a toll on our well-being, relationships and quality of life. Find out why.

1

THE EXCITEMENT WILL WEAR OFF

Possessions do not guarantee happiness! The things we buy provide instant but temporary satisfaction. There will always be a better newer version of anything we own. We may buy the latest version of an iPhone but surely, it won’t be the last! In general, it’s better to be happy with what you already have.

2

3

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH

I am telling you, no matter how much you have, it never feels enough! You are simply turning into a shopaholic who’s addicted to the instant fulfilment of buying anything.. Most probably, you are trying to fill an emotional void with a tangible item.

4

LESS STUFF = LESS CLUSTER = LESS STRESS A disorganized messy home full of clutter will make you irritable and stressed. You may not even notice if a thief broke into your house and stole random stuff. It’s better to buy only what you really need, because excess means stress.

5

MORE ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER

Studies have shown that less materialistic people are happier and more satisfied with their lives. Living too extravagantly seems to make it more difficult to enjoy the little things. Having a positive outlook on life in general is directly linked to having less materialistic values.

“LIVING TOO EXTRAVAGANTLY SEEMS TO MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT TO ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS.”

IT’S A DISTRACTION FROM WHAT REALLY MATTERS

Buying things we don’t need distracts us from achieving our main goals in life. . Don’t you agree that reaching your goals would make you a far happier person than buying clutter of no REAL value?!

P&G FUTURE FABRICS BRINGS TOGETHER THE WORLD’S LEADING FASHION AND FABRIC EXPERTS IN A FEAST FOR THE SENSES On Thursday 13th November 2014 P&G Fabric Care exclusively revealed how it is evolving to meet multi-sensorial fashion trends and solve the challenge of maintaining clothing beauty and longevity for consumers. Hosted in vibrant Berlin, this year’s P&G Future Fabrics - for its Fabric Care brands Ariel Power Gel and Downy brought together a prestigious mix of fashion, fabrics and human psychology experts to address the latest advances in fabrics and how our own unconscious decisions affect our clothing perceptions.

P&G’s Global Fashion Consultant, Giles Deacon, exclusively unveiled his latest machine-washable collections at P&G’s Future Fabrics, which included a range for Ariel Power Gel and Downy. 52 IDENTITY DECEMBER 2014

Deacon commented: “After a year of working with P&G Fabric Care I have seen their advances in fabric care. I’ve spent time with the talented team at the innovation centre in Brussels and witnessed the progress in their work there. I’ve been inspired by what Ariel Power Gel and Downy can do to ensure that clothes remain beautiful long after they were designed. For this new collection I was inspired by the macrotrend of multi-sensorial fashions and fabrics. Aware that both Ariel Power Gel and Downy have the capability to preserve and protect these fashions I set about creating designs that bring the best of each brand to life. For Ariel Power Gel it was all about making first impressions last, colour, confidence and impact. For Downy I focussed on giving people the confidence to wear an item all day and feel as great in it in the evening as they did when they first put it on in the morning.” A keynote speech, given by John Turner, P&G’s Research & Development director, focused on WHY people’s preferences and perceptions toward their clothes change. Turner revealed that P&G Fibre Scientists are introducing new advances in the 3-Step FibreSCIENCE approach. Turner commented: “Our closets are full of clothes, yet we only wear 20% of them 80% of the time, so why aren’t we wearing the rest? Why have we fallen out of love with a garment that we spent our hard earned money on? Ariel is looking at Fabric Care from a new angle to find out the answer. We’re breaking new ground by applying latest research in the cognitive science of human perception to understand WHY we reject a garment and how our relationship with clothes changes over time. By applying this knowledge to our FibreSCIENCE expertise we are redefining what Fabric Care means for consumers and their clothes.”

Robert van Pappelendam, Vice President of P&G Fabric Care Europe, commented: At P&G Fabric Care we constantly strive to meet people’s ever-evolving needs. From scientific research to clothes design we are increasingly aware of the benefits we can gain from greater understanding of cognitive behaviour. It’s extremely exciting to be able innovate and enhance our products at such a human level and we believe this is the key to successful product today.” 53 IDENTITY DECEMBER 2014

BOOK REVIEW

FORTY RULES OF LOVE: THE BOOK OF ALL TIMES Forty Rules of Love combines the past and the present, the east and the west, the good and the bad, the body and the soul just to provide a forceful and spiritual account of how love works within this world. Implicitly, Forty Rules of Love unfolds a Sufi perspective on Islam, the mere opposite of fundamentalism. It is the book of ALL times beautifully written by Turkish inspirational writer Elif Shafak. Forty Rules of Love is a novel, within a novel; it accounts for two parallel stories, each reflecting on the other, across two different periods of time. The first is about the legendary poet and philosopher Jalal Al-Din Rumi, and how he met his soul mate and spiritual guide Shams of Tabriz-that together incarnates Rumi’s message of love. They went on debating matters of God, the role of man, and the true meaning of Divine love. The hidden message here is that one needs the help of his soul mate to reach the holy truth. Before meeting Shams of Tabriz, Rumi had been self struggling, feeling a sense of incomprehensible emptiness, gaining timely experiences in an attempt to know anything that would help him reach his goal, that is truth. But Shams appeared in Rumi’s life , and together, they seeked the timeless message of love. The second story is about Ella Rubenstein, a 40 year old unhappily married woman. Her children no longer need her so she starts working as a reader for a literary agency. Her first assignment is to read and evaluate a new manuscript by a man called Aziz Zahara, which is about the spiritual journey of Jaal Al-Din Rumi with his soul mate Shams Tabriz. Ella was taken with Shams’ lessons to Rumi, As she reads on, she realizes that Rumi’s story mirrors her own, and that Aziz like Shams has come to set her free and open up her mind for truth.

“FORTY RULES OF LOVE UNFOLDS A SUFI PERSPECTIVE ON ISLAM” HERE ARE SOME FAVORITE RULES OF LOVE:

Rule 1 How we see God is a direct reflection of how we see

ourselves. If God brings to mind mostly fear and blame, it means there is too much fear and blame welled inside us. If we see God as full of love and compassion , so are we.

Rule 2 East, west, south or north makes little difference. No

matter what your destination is, just be sure to make every journey a journey within. If you travel within, you’ll travel the whole wide world and beyond.

Rule 3 Try not to resist changes which come your way. Instead,

let life live through you. And do not worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come?

STEIGENBERGER CECIL HOTEL ... AUTHENTIC HISTORY & REFINED HOSPITALITY

The renowned Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts had recently announced taking over the management of the popular Cecil Hotel of Alexandria, which is currently welcoming its repeaters & discerning guests as the “Steigenberger Cecil Hotel” It’s worth mentioning that the history of the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel, goes back in time to the early days of the twentieth century, in particular the year 1929 when it was built by the Italian Jewish Alessandro Loria from Tuscany, commissioned by the French Jewish Metzger family to become one of Egypt’s most romantic hotels back then. In a city, rich in cultures’ diversity as Alexandria, architecture was eclectic & no one played over such a variety of styles as Loria. Loria built the Hotel back then as a landmark to immortalize the era with its elegant revolving door, two beautiful wooden elevators and a bar that was carefully kept unchanged since World War II. While the rooms have high ceilings and large shuttered windows, and there’s richness in the burgundy, gold drapes and soft furnishings that decorate the space, giving the place the classical French feel. When Albert Metzger the hotel’s owner, opened it in 1929 he first called it the “Regina Palace” but renamed it within a year to become “The Cecil”. It was rapidly renowned as the finest hotel in Alexandria and was the famous Lawrence Durrell’s favorite hotel in the city due to its proximity to the sea and later on became a landmark in his famous novel “The Alexandria Quartet”. It was also featured in the famous novel “Miramar” of the Egyptian Naguib Mahfouz in 1967 – the Nobel Award winner. Other fans of “The Cecil” included author Somerset Maugham, Winston Churcill & Al Capone. Following the Egyptian revolution in 1952, the hotel was seized by the Egyptian government and in 2007, the ownership went back to the Metzger family who sold it back to the Egyptian government. The government eventually leased it to the French Hotel Chain “Sofitel” before “Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts”

took over as the managing company of the hotel in 2014 to become “Steigenberger Cecil Hotel”. Now the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel stands tall combining authentic history with Steigenberger’s world-famous refined hospitality & services. Among Alexandria hotels, the landmark Steigenberger Cecil Hotel enjoys a unique location in El Raml station in the middle of the city, facing two of Alexandria’s main attractions - the port and Qaitbay Citadel in Saad Zaghloul square and overlooking the sea directly. Other nearby must see attractions of Alexandria city include the great Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the famous Library of Alexandria), shopping areas, restaurants and cafes are just at the door steps of the hotel. With its distinctive location, French architectural style, comfortable rooms and luxurious suites; Steigenberger Cecil Hotel, is the Alexandria hotel for weekend gateways, seaside vacation, corporate events and business travel. The Hotel features 85 state-of-the art rooms including 3 suites that reflect the grandeur of the time when the hotel was constructed. The hotel features five restaurants and bars that suit every mood, perfect for unwinding & socializing while enjoying light snacks, drinks, refined international cuisine and the best fusion dishes from all around the world. Corporate facilities at the hotel are extensive with 4 meetings and banquet rooms that cover a total area of 363 sqm of event space suitable to hold any type of meetings, special occasions & weddings in addition to a fully equipped business center; meeting equipment for rental, catering and event management professionals that would help you plan & execute your event exceeding your expectations. The hotel has a renovation plan soon to be implemented. www.alexandria.steigenberger.com

A MEMORABLE WEEKEND IN ALEXANDRIA

I’ve always heard that Alex is most charming in fall but I never had the chance to visit except during summer. Last weekend, my friend suggested we head to Alex to unwind for a couple of days. All we wished for was a room with a view and needless to say exquisite food!! Sheraton Montazah has always been known for its unique location overlooking Montazah Palace and gardens as well as the beautiful Mediterranean waters. We arrived Thursday noon, headed straight to the hotel where we were greeted by a very hospitable staff member. We checked in and were shortly escorted to our room. The view was more spectacular than I envisioned, it was like nothing I had ever seen before! At this point we were famished so we opted for the Italian La Mamma restaurant.. The restaurant had an amazing authentic Italian ambiance l, it was warm and cozy. We didn’t know what to order at first because there were too many tempting choices. We started with the house

salad , and what an excellent choice that turned out to be. The salad had an unusual but tasty combination of ingredients: dried fruits, seafood, and nuts dressed with balsamic vinegar.. We both then had mushroom Risotto for the entrée. For the main course, I had tasty smoked chicken with lemon sauce and my friend had superb beef with mushroom sauce, all courtesy of the experienced talented chef who had recently joined Sheraton Montazah only three months ago. He had already refurbished the restaurant, revamped the kitchen and updated the menu. .. The hotel’s numerous facilities cater to everyone. The Spa offers different kinds of relaxing massages. Free WiFi is available all around the hotel. Sheraton Montazah turned out to be the perfect choice for a weekend getaway at very affordable rates.

Prized for their stamina and their acclimation to the harsh conditions of the Arabian deserts, the ancestors of the horses that are now recognized as the Egyptian Arabian purebred horse entered Egypt centuries ago, establishing the valuable bloodlines of the breed there. The breeding programs in Egypt therefore became the root source for the finest Arabian horses, attracting passionate enthusiasts from all corners of the world. Artists, poets, and historians have for centuries been inspired by their great beauty and romantic legacy. Nasr Marei is the third-generation owner of a stud farm in Giza, Egypt. His love for and knowledge of the Egyptian Arabian horse, coupled with his sensitive and striking photography, have inspired this visual tribute. His extraordinary photographs, accompanied by text that traces the history and evolution of the Arabian’s journey into Egypt, celebrate the lineage of this living treasure of Egyptian heritage. “Thanks to Marei’s extraordinary photographs and informative text, no reader will fail to appreciate the uniquehistory, and extraordinary beauty that have long made the Arabian Horse of Egypt among the most celebrated and sought-after animals in the world.” —Jane Waldron Grutz, Saudi Aramco World
