Whether he’s going to attend a formal business event or a casual get together with friends, we’ve got his back. You’ll also find suggestive ideas for fun couple workout routines and special birthday celebrations for your man, as well as red flags that might totally turn him off and make him reconsider any romantic relationship. Enjoy our October issue & stay safe everyone :)

LET’S MAKE SOMETHING VERY CLEAR...

HIS SKIN

2- DISHONESTY Dishonesty in all forms is unappealing to anyone. If you can’t be straightforward with the person in front of you, then you aren’t straightforward with yourself, which makes you a flaky person who cannot be trusted. Even half-truths are lies so tell the full story and don’t leave out the bad parts, because they’re usually the most honest parts. 3- BEING MATERIALISTIC “Money can’t buy me love,” sang the Beatles 57 years ago and it still rings true to this day. Don’t be in it or out of it for the money. Don’t glorify possessions more than people.

THE SEVEN BIGGEST RELATIONSHIP RED FLAGS FOR MEN by Farah Khedre We all have quirks and are super weirdos, but that doesn’t mean that everyone will like us in spite of that. Just like women are picky when it comes to men, there are certain things you can do/be that will make sure he will never pick you! We’ve asked around and their verdict’s out! These 7 relationship red flags were the most common answers! 1- IF SHE’S A WANNABE BRIDE Men don’t like to be rushed into doing something. They want to take their time until they decide they want to do it on their own. If you’re rushing into your relationship forward too quickly and are immediately ready to settle down and have babies, think again. Why fast forward through first dates, anxiety of getting to know each other and all the other first timers? If you really are ready for a monogamous relationship, then you should be slowing down and savoring moments.

4- ACTING MOTHERLY While Sigmund Freud once proposed the idea that men are looking for women who resemble their mothers, guys don’t like it when you actually become their mother. Don’t guilt trip them into doing things they don’t want to do or to spend more time with you. Worry, care and love but not in a motherly way, but rather in a partner-y way. 5- DRAMA Swinging from one emotional extreme to another, and sometimes in less than minutes screams self-proclaimed drama queen. Nothing good will come out of creating something out of nothing. Constant drama in life is bad for the soul, so chill out. 6- NOT GIVING THEM SPACE Solitude is healing and it brings peace to any relationship. If you are constantly at each other’s throat all the time, you will eventually feel trapped, especially if you do everything together. You should spend time with other people on your own different times and get to grow individually instead of standing still together. So don’t be the person who throws tantrums when he’d rather travel for the weekend or spend the night alone. 7- IF YOU TREAT WAITERS LIKE CRAP J.K. Rowling once said, “If you want to know what a man’s like, look at how he treats his inferiors”, because that way you will glean important information about who this person really is. Eye rolling at the barista or yelling at the bank clerk because you were having “one-of-those-days” or they mistook your hot mocha for iced is not sexy. October 2021 • IDENTITY 9

LET’S MAKE SOMETHING VERY CLEAR... HIS SKIN by Amira ElSayed

How to choose the right moisturizer for your loved one? You walk into a seemingly endless aisle with words like CREAM! LOTION! HYDRATION! ANTI-AGING! ENERGIZING! shouting at you from bottle after bottle and a certain paralysis sets in. Skincare is personal. It can be tailored to his skin’s specific needs. But that can take a lot of legwork, trial and error and, sometimes, a lot of money before you find him something that actually works.

PAULA’S CHOICE CALM REDNESS RELIEF MOISTURIZER Sensitive skin is an issue for most guys, even if you don’t think they have it. Redness, dryness, uneven texture and breakouts can all be signs of sensitivity. Barring a visit to a dermatologist, the best way to combat these issues is to change the products you’re buying to those tailored specifically for sensitive skin. They are formulated to keep irritation to a minimum. This moisturizer is a gamechanger for anyone with redness.

14 IDENTITY • October 2021

YOUTH TO THE PEOPLE AGE PREVENTION CREAM Natural ingredients are the biggest trend in skincare right now and with good reason. Just like a healthy diet, his skin benefits from natural vitamins and antioxidants found in things like essential oils, plants, vegetables and fruits. Think of this as a juice cleanse for his face. Youth to the People uses the same philosophy to deliver high-potency, coldpressed benefits to the outside of his body.

REVIVE SENSITIF RENEWAL CREAM This is the gold standard of moisturizer. He should put this on when his skin feels ravaged and needs some serious repair. It will feel like cells are knitting themselves back together and will give him a protective layer.

CLINIQUE FOR MEN

ROYAL FERN PHYTOACTIVE ANTI-AGING CREAM You can definitely tell when a skincare product has higher quality ingredients. The texture is better, there are typically fewer chemicals and additives, and the results are faster. Royal Fern is no exception. The active ingredients are evident and the results are almost instantaneous. With a few weeks of regular application, his skin will look completely different.

Multi-benefit lotion instantly improves skin and softens beard. Applies easily over facial hair, from one-day stubble to a light beard, to soothe the skin beneath. Over time, strengthens skin and conditions beard for easier grooming. The 2 in 1 Skin Hydrator & Beard Conditioner does exactly what its name suggests, and is oilfree to avoid breakouts.

NIVEA MEN ENERGY REVITALIZING LOTION The quality of this is superb for a drugstore brand. It goes on light and gets absorbed all throughout the day. When you’re looking for a good allaround reasonably priced moisturizer, it’s important that it goes on smooth. Too often products have a lot of additives that can sit on his skin and impede absorption, which means they don’t work as long or as well as they should. This great multi-purpose lotion is the exception.

KIEHL’S FACIAL FUEL Vitaminenriched and energizing, nonoily moisturizer wakens and uplifts dull, tired-looking skin. Dynamic “facial recovery accelerator” helps skin resist the effects of environmental stress (we know it’s hard to resist) for a healthy appearance. The formula, with Vitamin C and E, Chestnut Extract and Soy, helps waken tiredlooking skin and improve skin’s look and texture. With use, his skin will feel refuelled, re-energized and revitalized.

AVEDA MEN PUREFORMANCE Moisturising formula preps skin for a close, comfortable shave. Contains exclusive phyto-active blend with naturally derived ingredients specifically created to treat men’s skin conditions with soothing, anti-oxidant power. Helps protect against razor burn as well as having a rich and refreshing aroma that combines organic lavender, Vetiver and lemon.

DR JACKSON’S Dr Jackson’s signature cream visibly helps nourish and repair dry or sun damaged skin by tightening the skin. This skin cream has been formulated using natural extracts of Kigelia, Baobab, Shea butter and Marula Oil. Compounds identified within these natural extracts have been shown to stop melanin production, allowing for a more even skin tone. Especially effective on sun damaged skin, sun spots, liver spots, Dr Jackson’s has an antiinflammatory effect, reducing redness and blemishes.

NEAL’S YARD REMEDIES MEN This energising, gently foaming men’s face wash offers a deep cleanse for all skin types. An infusion of Fairtrade antioxidant-rich rooibos and organic calendula washes away everyday impurities while keeping his skin clean and refreshed. October 2021 • IDENTITY 15

identity STYLE

The Most Stylish

MEN OF ALL TIME by Amina Moustapha There is a subtle yet crucial difference between fashion and style. Fashion is what’s trending right now, but style is classic. We can all agree that when it comes to style some men around the world have a knack for simply getting it right! So sit back, relax and take a few notes.

YVES SAINT LAUREN “Fashion fades, style is eternal” Yves Saint Laurent once said, and he was the living proof of his own saying. He was arguably the most famous and celebrated midcentury fashion designer in the world. When it came to his wardrobe; he was sharp, elegant and unforgettable.

SEAN CONNERY You can’t think of style without having James Bond crossing your mind, and who is the man who launched this legendary role and set the tone for the whole franchise? It’s Mr. Connery! Even at ease, he still looks suave and stylish.

DAVID BECKHAM David Beckham’s status as one of the world’s most stylish athletes can never be questioned. From hip hop to hipster to haute couture, Beckham shows that he can pull off pretty much whatever sartorial choices that come his way.

RYAN GOSLING Ladies may love Ryan Gosling for his good looks, but gents admire him for his impressive fashion sense. As comfortable in a suit as in a pair of jeans and t-shirt, Gosling’s unique style is adaptable to any occasion. Whether walking the streets or the red carpet, the A-list actor always looks on point. GEORGE CLOONEY Clooney is a style icon. Yes, he has classic Hollywood good looks, talent and all that, but he has a personal style that is very much his own. It is classic, but not stuffy. It is simple, but not boring. And it is a way of dressing we wish many men would embrace!

RAMI MALEK Malek isn’t just one to watch on the big screen. His red carpet game is just as strong, and he also masters the smart casual looks. Much like the style of Freddie Mercury, who he starred as in Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018, Rami Malek never looks dull.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY PROJECT

Project to Develop Thai Textile Products for the Global Market Under the Concept of Circular Economy

The Department of International Trade Promotion has adapted the Thai government’s economic model for sustainable development, or BCG Economy (Bio-CircularGreen Economy), to combine with biodiversity and culture, which are both strengths and distinct identities of Thailand, to initiate a project to develop Thai fabric products for the world market under the concept of circular economy. The aim is to promote and support the distribution of income, reducing inequality, strengthening the sense of community, and giving importance to the environment and sustainable development. According to this economic concept, the circular resource management in the system (Re-material) converts used items back to raw materials for making new products (Make-Use-Return) and reduces the need for depleting the world’s precious resources. It plays an important role in driving fashion production and consumption trends towards sustaining a beautiful world.

24 IDENTITY • October 2021

Textile fashion products apparel and lifestyle fashion that appear in this collection come from Thai entrepreneurs who have participated full force in the concepts underlying these development activities-including raw materials, production processes and design—until resulting in this latest collection of outstanding products that meet the requirements of a wide range of applications, with every brand displaying innovation and uniqueness. Ready to meet the modern lifestyle of living in an environmentally friendly way, every production is able to contribute to a world of sustainable fashion and reduce wasteful use of resources. This collection is perfect for those who are seeking products made from sustainable materials and utilizing sustainable processes, waste production, local production, crafts and community.

You’ve won the “Egypt State Award” from the Supreme Council of Culture in 2018 - tell us the story behind your winning project! To understand the project more, I have to first describe the natural surroundings of Al Barari community, which is an area covered with heavy plantings and waterways in Dubai’s desert. The flying platforms project was proposed as an enhancement for an existing structure to increase community involvement and act as a cultural meeting point in a community that has around 200 nationalities, so people can gather and exchange their cultural activities. With the diversity of taste and lifestyle, my design approach was to prioritize the site’s natural environment. The project involved pedestrian paths within the trees, open galleries, and exhibition spaces that could be used for different cultural events in addition to food and beverage covered zones. Currently, the project is considered one of Dubai’s iconic landmarks which attract visitors even from outside Al Barari’s community. In 2020, you won the “Cool Abu Dhabi International Competition”; tell us more about the competition and your winning proposal! The aim of the competition, in a simplified way, is to provide thermal comfort in outdoor urban spaces and try to beat UAE’s hot climate and give people the opportunity to still enjoy the outdoor spaces. One thousand five hundred and seventy participants from 67 countries participated in this competition and the jury only chose 10 winning proposals. My proposal, Circadian Clouds, was one of them. What does “Circadian Clouds” actually mean and how did you conceive the idea for this design? The common traditional way of using canopies, pergolas, or any other shading structure to provide outdoor thermal comfort, always blocks the sky and turns the outdoor into a semi-indoor space. The only way to enjoy the outdoors in hot regions is to turn them into indoor spaces unless the sky is cloudy; this is when you really find people enjoying the outdoor area. The idea was to provide an artificial cloud that is very high and has minimum sky blockage so people will feel its presence but will not see it unless they look towards the sun. Since the sun is moving, we needed this cloud to also move with the sun to always keep the targeted area

in the shade. And that’s how we found the answer, again in nature with the Circadian rhythm. The Circadian rhythm is a biological process that simply responds to the Earth rotation around its axis causing the day and night. A very good example of the Circadian rhythm is how the sunflower uses its Circadian clock to always face the sun. So, we wanted a cloud that follows the Circadian rhythm - that’s why it’s called the Circadian Clouds. How do you feel about winning these two important awards? I feel happy for two reasons; the first is that I first got recognized in my homeland as it really motivated me towards the international win of the second competition. And the second is that I could give my team a living example of how to break the boundaries of the impossible - and it’s achievable. These two awards are milestones in a long journey of continuous development; they made me feel more confident that my firm and I are on the right path. Ever since my firm (EMKAAN) was founded, we have always allocated time and resources for research and innovation. It definitely takes time, resources and a lot of patience but creating architectural and urban spaces that bring joy and happiness to people is totally worth it! You are an architect who studied engineering, how do you weave science and art together in the realm of building spaces and cities? The best trait in weavers is patience. Being patient in educating my clients about the importance of taking care of meticulous details in a project and that the building should speak to the five senses, being patient with my team of architects and engineers and educating them to speak about solutions instead of problems, and being patient trying to observe nature and learn from it. When I start a new project, I only try to find a link between the people, the unique qualities of the site and the universe. Only when I find this link do I consider myself successful in the project. Natural science and art are already intertwined - it’s just like two faces of one coin, a flower has a beautiful fragrance, feel and color [art] and it still has very functional small shafts moving liquids from the soil to its petals with leaves around [engineering]. All of that can still be represented through a beautiful mathematical equation in phyllotaxy [science]. I think the answer in brief should be patience and letting myself go with that beautiful flow. How did being based in Dubai impact you and your firm EMKAAN? Dubai is a cosmopolitan city; you can easily find yourself surrounded by people from 20 nationalities in less than 500 square meters. This diversity of multi-cultures brought with it a lot of knowledge and competition where, to keep competing, we need to always be one step ahead and be bold in expressing our ideas. How do you describe good architecture? Good architecture is what brings joy and happiness to people, it ignites the positive thoughts and work of minds; it should go beyond what we see to something that speaks to our five senses. It’s a long process of thinking, executing, and weaving art, engineering, and science to ensure that the living spaces are energized with positive energy. Do you really believe that there is positive or negative energy in the spaces we live in? I always felt reserved to agree but after seeing my finished designs accommodating different clients from different cultures around the globe, I don’t anymore. This is something that’s very real and in many cultures, they consider it an essential element in designing their environment. Tell us the story behind EMKAAN! Ever since I can remember, I had questions whispering in the back of my head; the journey of seeking answers for these questions guided me during my life path. EMKAAN was founded in 2009 in Dubai to help me answer these questions. Our name, EMKAAN, is derived from the Arabic verb “makkanâ”, which translates to enable. We consider it our mission to enable ideas and to transform them into reality and our name, EMKAAN, always serves as a reminder to us that nothing is impossible. EMKAAN team includes architects, designers, and engineers from different nationalities which allow them all, including myself, to learn from each other and offer this international experience to our clients. What kind of questions were whispering in the back of your head? Questions like, can architecture work as an antidepressant? Or, could people be better mannered if surrounded by beautiful architecture? These questions are always driving us to improve in EMKAAN.

32 IDENTITY • October 2021

EMKAAN offers Urban, Architecture, and Interior Design as well as Structural and MEP Engineering – can you talk about your future plans with EMKAAN and how being so multicultural benefits your clients? Since we got established in 2009, I’ve dedicated a good amount of time to educate myself and my team on the importance of looking at things from different perspectives, in addition to the day to day project where we offer full in house solutions for different projects; residential, urban or commercial. We’ve always had this small unit that is responsible for conducting researches in different fields of architecture, engineering, and science. Recently, we’ve opened a branch in Abu Dhabi and grew our research team. Consequently, we are trying to be very careful in selecting our clients. How do you see the architecture and interior fields in Egypt nowadays? Since 2014 and until today, I sense a strong will to develop Egypt in many areas, including architecture. Architects, designers and engineers hold a huge responsibility to offer their best and I believe they can still do better in terms of attention to detail, considering orientation, offering unique designs, respecting nature, and considering the human aspect to offer better-built environments. You said that you are very selective in choosing EMKAAN’s client; what type of clients do you work with? Our clients are those with unique taste and style, who can appreciate the beauty of nature and God’s creation, see value in details and understand that each design should have a unique story. Going through EMKAAN’s social media, we came across a beautiful video of a project called “The Intriguing”; could you please tell us more about it? “The Intriguing” is a design methodology where art, engineering, mathematics, science, nature, and psychology are weaved towards the architecture of joy and positiveness of space energy. My personal involvement in projects that follow this methodology is higher than other projects, which makes it kind of a limited edition. Do you deliver projects or designs in Egypt? Are you planning to open EMKAAN-Egypt soon? Yes, EMKAAN-EGYPT is located in waterway building, we’re currently in the process of establishing it. And people can contact me personally on m@emkaan.com.

HOW TO MOVE ON FROM MR. PERFECT THAT YOU NEVER REALLY LOVED by Hadjar Sharkawi

You meet a super decent guy who falls madly in love with you, but you don’t feel a thing for him. He treats you really well and does everything in his power to make you happy, yet you find yourself unable to reciprocate his feelings. You tell yourself that something has got to be missing. And you hold that thought because that something is usually too big of a deal to overlook. The love factor. So, what do you do? You choose to end it and you’re left with nothing but the memories of what used to be a perfect man to you. You start to wonder, have I done the right thing? Was he too good to let go? Or am I too cruel for shattering his heart into a million pieces? Guilt starts to creep in and you begin to feel like maybe you got it all wrong. But we’re here to tell you that you didn’t. You’re not the bad person in this story. Here are a bunch of tips to help you move on from this futile relationship. DON’T BE TOO HARSH ON YOURSELF Tip number one is the most important! Don’t go thinking you’re the reason this seemingly flawless love story could not last. Yes, he was a great guy, but he is someone else’s Mr. Perfect. You two wouldn’t have lasted together because you simply didn’t love him. Imagine this, you push yourself to move forward with this relationship and two years into your marriage you realize you can’t take it anymore. Would that have been a better scenario? We think not! So, you actually did the right thing after all. You didn’t break his heart or make him believe you’ll be his lifetime partner. Most importantly, you didn’t break your own heart by choosing to never let it experience the true meaning of love.

38 IDENTITY • October 2021

BELIEVE IN FAITH Mastering this skill makes you feel like you have it all figured out! Not just with this too good to be true kind of guy, but with everything that life throws your way. If it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, there’s definitely a reason why! You and this man didn’t work out together so that you could eventually meet the love of your life somewhere down the line. It’s that simple! Don’t feel guilty for deciding to give yourself something no one can live without, love. Remember that love and faith come hand in hand. Believing in one leads to being certain of the other. So, believe in faith and you’ll end up finding love! DON’T GET TOO CAUGHT UP ON THE MEMORIES One of the hardest things about past relationships is dealing with the memories that will always be engraved in our minds. It’s not at all easy to ask someone to forget about all the good things someone used to do for them. But letting go of these memories will be a lot easier when you learn to love yourself. Only then will you be able to realize that you did this for your own self. You start to enjoy feeling those butterflies in your tummy that come with being with a partner you are deeply in love with. A partner with whom you’ll be able to make so many unforgettable memories that will always live on with the both of you! FOCUS ON YOURSELF You left the guy, you’re single, now what? You don’t spend a lifetime dwelling on it, but rather, you start to take care of yourself! You’ve got the time, the energy and the love all for yourself and let us tell you that is the absolute best time of your life!

Go out on a shopping spree! Retail therapy is sure to wipe any tears away. Go out to eat your favorite meal and start working out right after. There are so many ways you can focus on yourself, find your favorite one and give it a shot! WAIT FOR YOUR OWN MR. PERFECT We know you’re longing for the love of your life to come sweep you off your feet. But you have to be

certain, he’ll make his way to you at the end. The fact that he hasn’t gotten there yet doesn’t mean he’s never going to. And when he does, he’ll give you the whole world, and you’ll love every bit of it. So, next time you think to yourself, “How could I not love such a perfect guy”, know that he was never meant to be yours in the first place. And that the one your heart belongs to is just lurking around the corner! October 2021 • IDENTITY 39

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT WHAT MAKES A MAN ‘MANLY’ by Salma Elfeqy When people try to define what a real man is, they sometimes have unrealistic or irrational views. But since we are living in the 21st century, I guess it is fair to say that some people’s views on masculinity are outdated and need to change sooner than later. These misconceptions place burdens on men that they can’t truly be themselves. They try to please the society and act as ‘manly’ as possible, when this is not even the real definition of manhood. Teach your kids, friends, and everyone around you that the following list is nothing but fictitious. 40 IDENTITY • October 2021

Why is it that people always assume that a real ‘man’ wouldn’t be interested in fashion, and if a guy is, then probably he is not straight. It doesn’t make you any less of a man if you like to take good care of yourself, follow fashion trends and want to look as good as you can. To the contrary, it makes you look sexy and attractive to women, because believe me not a single woman would like to date a guy who looks untidy. MEN SHOULDN’T BE EMOTIONAL It is very weird how women build this stereotype of how guys should be strong emotionally, otherwise they are cowards and then later on when their significant other is cold and doesn’t like sharing his emotions, he is considered a cold person. To cut this eternal story short, men are human and humans have feelings, it is not something out of the ordinary. Encourage your sons to share their feelings whether of sadness or happiness, otherwise you are encouraging them to be as cold as ice. MEN SHOULDN’T CRY Crying is a natural process that humans go through when they are in pain whether physically or emotionally. Why would we deprive men, a species of humans, of this right? They have the right to cry freely when they just got out of a relationship or lost someone dear to them, or even when they just had a terrible day. Be lenient because at the end of the day we are all human beings who need to cry when things go south. MEN SHOULDN’T DO ANY HOUSE CHORES Men are raised in a way where their mommies make it seem like it’s socially degrading for him to do any of the house chores. But this specifically needs to change. Every mum should assign house chores to her kids equally, whether they are males or females. This develops a sense of responsibility and independence. MEN ARE VALUED WITH WHAT THEY OWN AND EARN You’d think that it only used to be the case 20 years ago, but believe me some girls still think that way. A man is so much more than just his monthly paycheck or the kind of car he drives. We need to start thinking of the person without adding the materialistic stuff in the equation. If he is a great person but doesn’t own a cool car, then believe me he is better than a guy who owns tons of cars, and makes a 100 thousand every month.

MEN SHOULDN’T BE INTERESTED IN FASHION

Fight the stigma because men are just human beings.

MEN SHOULD TELL YOU WHAT TO AND WHAT NOT TO DO Unless you are still this little dependent kid, then no man should tell you what to do and what not to do. Of course any person can give you a piece of advice, but no one should oblige you to do something that you don’t feel like doing. Believe me, a man is much sexier when he debates with his wife and kids what life has to offer. He is much cooler when he’s a flexible kindhearted person who is not super strict that you fear him and hate his existence. A MAN SHOULD NEVER DEPEND ON ANYONE Of course every person, not only men, should be independent and responsible, but this doesn’t mean that if you once, twice or even 10 times depend on someone then you are not man enough. It is okay to depend on people that you trust whether it’s your mum, dad, siblings or even the girl that you love. Admitting that you need help is what’s going to help you get through life stronger, tougher and even more successful. A MAN SHOULD BE PERFECT Every human being has flaws and sometimes fatal ones, so why are humans super judgmental and expecting men to be perfect in every way possible. They are just as humanly as women; they have weaknesses and they have strengths as well. But forcing them to hide their weak points only makes it a bigger problem.

A man should not be stereotyped as someone who is filthy rich, super strong, perfect, careless, emotionless or has a sucky fashion taste. A man is compassionate, loving, caring; weak at times and strong at times. A man is so much more than what the society claims. October 2021 • IDENTITY 41

CRACKING THE CODE OF MEN’S FEELINGS by Marwa Rakha “Big boys don’t cry”, “Take it like a man”..... We all grew up, men and women, believing that men are a feelingless gender. Boys are sissies if they show fear, pain or heaven forbid the most-taboo expression of all: crying! Men grow up aligning themselves with those norms in order to fit in. They fear if they show a more vulnerable side, it will overshadow their other masculine traits.

When it comes to relationships, feelings are the very thing that create closeness and connection, and achieve a deeper intimacy. When a man doesn’t share his feelings with his partner, this can have a dramatic impact on the relationship quality and lead to all sorts of confusion and conflict. We reached out to our Relationship Expert, Marwa Rakha, to help us crack the code of men’s feelings. 1. PUTTING NORMS AND SOCIETY BELIEFS ASIDE, IS IT TRUE THAT MEN AND WOMEN PROCESS EMOTIONS DIFFERENTLY? Emotions are emotions; take a baby, for example, when a baby is hungry, he/she cries. When a toddler is sad, he/she cries. When a child is scared, he/she cries. Also, when they are happy, excited, or surprised, they express their feelings. Just looking at children assures us that they were born with the ability to experience and express the same set of feelings. After birth, parents start dictating the differences between girls and boys; pink for girls and blue for boys, houses and dolls for girls, cars and Meccano for boys, long hair, dresses, earrings are for girls, short hair and checkered shirts are for boys, tears are for girls and boys should just bite their lips. This early conditioning teaches boys to deny their true feelings and desires; deny the desire to become a hairdresser, a chef, a tailor, a nurse, or a stay-at-home dad. They are also forced to deny emotional and physical pain. It gets worse when boys get denied the hugs, kisses, and loving physical contact that girls are allowed. Then they are forbidden to kiss, caress, or stay in the arms of their mothers – even as young as 6, 7, or 9. By the time that boy is a pre-teen, or a teen, he has already mastered denying his emotional and physical needs of love and intimacy. He puts on the “rough machine” mask every morning and faces the world. By the time he is in his twenties or thirties, he no longer needs to put on the mask – the mask becomes him, and he becomes the mask. The worst part is yet to come! Girls grow up absorbing all of the above; hence, as they are

growing up, they make fun of, shun, reject, and friend-zone any boy/guy who is expressive, communicative, gentle, loving, and has no issues with crying. As for processing emotions, male and female brains truly work differently but it is not a Mars or Venus type of thing; it is more of a wide spectrum of different shades of masculinity and femininity that are available for both men and women – we all have masculine and feminine sides. One’s position on the spectrum also changes over time; a woman can start off on the very feminine side, and over time and with experience, her masculine side takes over – thus leaving her in a different position on the spectrum. 2. HOW IMPORTANT IS SHARING EMOTIONS IN A RELATIONSHIP? CAN THE LACK OF IT DOOM A RELATIONSHIP? Ideally speaking, the answer to this question is: Yes, sharing emotions is crucial to the success of a relationship. Realistically speaking, some women are not ready to deal with a man who could eloquently and elaborately express his feeling. They find him boring, womanly, and, in a way, less masculine. Other women are starved for mutual communication of affection; they are deprived of deep meaningful conversations. These women suffer anxiety attacks, depression phases and sexual frustration. The men and women in both types of relations mentioned above, are unhappy. They are a misfit. The only way to avoid such miserable relationships is to choose the right partner from the beginning. Choose the partner you feel connected to the most. Choose the level of communication and expression that you are both comfortable with. Choose the person that brings out the best in you. 3. HOW TO HELP A MAN SHOW AND EXPRESS HIS EMOTIONS? If a man is ever to let his guard down, take off his “rough machine” mask, and express his emotions, he needs to feel secure and safe. This can never happen with a judgmental woman, in a relationship plagued with power struggles, or at a time when the man is not ready for reconnecting with his feminine side. A GAME FOR TWO:

Sports for Both of You by Elhusseni Fekry Everything is better with your significant other. Even playing sports. Yes! You can actually plan to work out together and have the time of your lives! Most sports that get coverage in Egypt are team sports; let’s not forget that Egypt’s official number one sport is football. Yet there are plenty of other sports and workout routines that can be suitable for just the two of you. BENEFITS OF WORKING OUT WITH YOUR PARTNER A. CHANGE OF ROUTINE It can be a good change of routine. In a way, it’s a new activity other than visiting clubs, dining in restaurants, or chilling in cafés. Working out together can be this new adventure that would make your weekend all the more exceptional. And if it ended up being part of your routine, even better for your health. B. BONDING It helps you get closer to each other. You would be surprised that you will find new ways to bond with your significant other when you work out together. As you motivate, compete, and even challenge each other; you help to grow as individuals and as a couple. C. MOTIVATION It’s always said that in order to maintain a workout schedule, you should have a workout partner. Having your significant other as your partner can be a great motivation for a workout. In the noisy, fastpaced life we are living, you may find that you are looking forward to quality time with your partner. Your partner who happens to be an athlete can help you by giving you inside information about how to up your game and how to avoid injuries and the like. Also, if one of you is a bit shy, it can be a great confidence boost for them. Us against the world, don’t you think? There are many sports that you can practice with your partner and even more workout routines that can be both fun and beneficial at the same time.

44 IDENTITY • October 2021

HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES: TENNIS It would be a shame not to start with tennis; it’s basically a sport for two, as if it’s tailored for this purpose. Tennis is one of the best sports that heightens metabolism and it’s a really good workout. There are even some cardio tennis drills that require less competition and allow you to just goof around. If you are not a big fan of the outdoors, you can resort to squash. Even playing some light ping pong can be a good alternative. And if you’re a summer person, you know that beach racket is something we all wait for after the winter chills thaw off! RUNNING/JOGGING Running is the most basic of sports. Nearly all sports require a degree of it. No matter how fit you are and accustomed to running, it can get pretty lonely. Especially if you run for half-marathons. The more you feel the passage of time, the more it will feel tiresome to go on. However, having your partner as your running buddy can make this daunting chore a lot more fun. You can keep each other company, and the workout can be more relaxing depending on the routes you choose. Also, there are beautiful streets in Cairo that are waiting for you to rediscover together. SWIMMING Most doctors recommend swimming as a solid alternative to running. If we say that you can only choose one sport in general, that would have to be swimming. It doesn’t require much fitness, as a matter of fact, it helps increase it. Swimming not only helps to relieve back pain, especially lower and middle back pain, but it also provides a zero-tension environment for limbs. It is one of the best sports that jumpstarts your metabolism with the least effort and time possible.

Doing laps around the pool with your significant other can be a nice workout for you to share, especially during the scorching summer months. GYM If you’re not a fan of the outdoors, you can still compete with each other in indoor exercises. A lot of gyms offer you a wide selection of programs that makes working out more fun. There are even certain workout routines that are tailored to couples. YOGA Yoga can either look very easy or very difficult to you. The best thing about yoga is you can practice it anywhere, whether indoors and outdoors. It doesn’t require a lot of movement and you can just remain in one position for a while. That will surely leave your muscles sore, but way more relaxed. Practicing yoga with your partner can make things have a sense of amiability, especially if you are both beginners; you will fall down...a lot! But it would be great fun, nonetheless. CYCLING If you have the time and the proper gear, cycling can be an underrated opportunity for some quality sport time. Make sure not to pick a crowded route. You can find bicycle-friendly streets and trails in Maadi and Zamalek. Don’t forget that you can rally about and finish your errands way faster than when riding your car, as cycling can be a faster mean of commuting in busy narrow streets. HIKING This maybe a less familiar option, but hiking can actually be one of the best sports for couples. City life can be dull; you may feel that it affects the

flow of your relationship and that you guys need to do something new. Hiking in Mount Sinai in Saint Catherine is indeed one of these new activities that are starting to gain popularity in Egypt. Don’t worry, if you feel that this long haul is a bit too challenging, you can ease up on lighter challenges in Wadi Degla Protectorate. You may not see it, but the beautiful and calm nature can spice up your relationship. Who would say no to a chance to lighten up away from the banging beats of the concrete jungle?

Now you can spend some quality time with each other and burn a few calories at the same time, a win-win, right?! October 2021 • IDENTITY 45

EXTREME SPORTS

KATHMANDU’S BEST TEMPLES

Nepal is home to many dare-devil sports, but even a complete novice can give one of these 3 a go:

The nation’s capital is the best spot to tour Buddhist and Hindu temples as there are just so many of them. Hours can easily fly by observing the sights and sounds of these stunning spiritual locations.

1. PARAGLIDING: Hop on a bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara to try this dangerous sport. you’ll find yourself windswept as you glide well above ground level. 2. WHITE WATER RAFTING: Hold on tight and try not to get thrown overboard if you give white water rafting a go. While Nepal is landlocked, its huge abundance of rivers makes it the perfect spot for water sports like this. 3. BUNGEE JUMPING: Flinging yourself off a ledge head first might be the perfect way to get away from the bustle and chaos of Nepal’s capital city. This activity can be done as a simple day trip with lots of companies offering direct buses.

• Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as ‘monkey temple’ hosts beautiful views across the city and is home to countless monkeys – hence the name! It’s a holy site often attended by Nepal’s tantric Buddhists, so there’s never a dull moment here. • Pashupatinath is the holiest Hindu site in Nepal, hosting large crowds of Sadhus (holy men). Located on the Bagmati River, it’s also one of the city’s most significant cremation grounds, which is why it’s definitely worth a visit. • Boudhanath Stupa is the holiest Tibetan Buddhist site outside of Tibet, and it has loads of surrounding souvenir shops, restaurants and coffee bars, with lovely views all round.

NEPAL’S BIGGEST FESTIVAL THIS MONTH: TIHAR (OCTOBER 25-29TH) This is Nepal’s second most important festival, also known as the festival of lights, lasting five days. It’s probably one of the best festivals to observe in Nepal all year, as the whole of Kathmandu valley is lit with oil lamps, candles, colourful lights and fireworks, despite a government ban on fire-crackers. On the first day a crow is worshiped (the messenger of yama who is the bringer of death). On the second day dogs are worshiped, seen to be agents of yama. On the third day cows are worshiped in the morning with prayers and food, and in the evening the goddess Laxmi is given prayers. The fourth day honours the draught animal and the final day is known as Brother’s Day, when sisters put tika (red dots) on their brothers’ foreheads, giving blessings also. NOT TO MISS: A TRADITIONAL NEPALESE MEAL For not a lot of money, you can eat like royalty in Nepal. Alongside a mass of Chinese and Indian delicacies, Nepal itself has a wealth of national dishes that are definitely worth a try. Here’s a twocourse meal not to miss: • Start off with a Masala Chai Tea. Perfectly brewed with herbs, spices and fresh milk, it’s a drink found across the whole of Nepal. • For the first course, there’s no better option than a traditional Momo which is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Stuffed with buffalo, chicken or vegetables, they’re basically a filled dumpling. • For the grand finale, try Daal Bhat Tarkari, a dish with 3 separate parts. The Daal is a spicy lentil soup, Bhat boiled grains and Tarkari a spicy vegetable curry, sometimes served alongside pumpkin shoots.

ONE-POT RECIPES FOR MEN! by Soha Darwish Food Writer & Critic - Menu Consultant. Diploma in Food Journalism - London, UK I come from a home where food and cooking were never taken lightly, which definitely embedded the foodie in me. But like anything in life it really does take two to tango, and this is where my father’s role transpired. I believe that when men are interested in cooking, not necessarily on daily basis of course -they somehow elevate the culinary skills in the household. But I also note that most men are usually happy to cook only when; a) they are in a good mood b) the kitchen’s ambiance is inviting and when I say inviting, I mean clean and tidy - with all the prep work done by somebody -and when I say somebody, on most occasions it’s the wife! So, when I was asked to write my regular food topic in a men’s issue, the one-pot recipes theme just

popped in my mind. Desperately endeavouring to make it as tempting and encouraging as possible to get them into the kitchen. Addressing all situations, whether you are a family man who enjoys taking over the dinner service every blue moon, a bachelor who spends most of his salary on dining out or a college student away from his family, who ends up ordering junk food delivery at least five times a week, despite his best intentions. Here are two recipes tested and tried, in fact they have become home staples, when I’m running against time or not willing to cause havoc in my tidy kitchen. One is original and the other is a classic with a twist –both highly nutritious and just delicious. SPINACH & PRAWNS TORTELLINI: Serves 4 A heavenly match of fresh pasta, seafood and cream. An easy recipe to follow with few ingredients - delivering mesmerising flavours of sea, earth and lush dairy. It’s healthy comfort food at its best. What more could you ask for?

Shopping Basket: 500g peeled medium prawns – 400g frozen spinach – 1 small chopped onion – 1 pack of chilled spinach & ricotta tortellini pasta (approx. 400 g) – 3 tbsp olive oil - 2 crushed garlic cloves – ¼ tsp nutmeg – pinch of paprika - 250 ml whipping cream - salt & pepper.

48 IDENTITY • October 2021

STEPS: 1. In a deep large pan, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil, until translucent. 2. Add frozen spinach (or fresh spinach leaves), stir fry until it’s completely thawed. Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg and paprika. 3. Cover with water and simmer until almost cooked, then add cream and simmer again for about 2 mins. 4. Gently stir in the fresh tortellini together with the raw prawns - partially cover with lid and simmer for about 5mins - until pasta is cooked and prawns are rosy. Don’t overcook, these are delicate ingredients and only need a few minutes on the hob. 5. Serve immediately with generous sprinkles of grated Parmesan. Surely you will enjoy!

CHICKEN & MUSHROOM LEMON RISOTTO: Serves 4 Risottos are classic Italian rice dishes that are always welcomed in any setting with its sublime creaminess, though no cream is used. It is really frowned upon in Italy to add cream in risottos, why should you really?! In this recipe the egg yolk twist is optional, but it really brightens up the dish and boosts its mellowness and nourishment.

Shopping Basket: 400g Arborio or Carnaroli rice – 300g diced chicken fillets – 250g sliced chestnut mushrooms - 1 large chopped onion – 2 chopped stalks of celery – 3 tbsp olive oil – 1 chicken or vegetable stock cube – 2 egg yolks - 1 Adalia lemon – pinch of nutmeg – 200g grated Parmesan cheese - salt & pepper.

STEPS: 1. Boil about 800 ml of water in a kettle, then pour about 500ml in a jug stirring in the stock cube and keep it on your side. 2. In a large pan, sauté the onions and celery in olive oil until translucent, then add the chicken and mushrooms. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg and stir fry for about 4 mins. 3. Add the risotto rice directly from the packet (without washing) and stir in gently, until all is combined. 4. On medium heat, pour some of the stock in the jug covering the risotto, stir until stock is absorbed, then repeat same process until rice is cooked. Starch will be slowly released turning the mixture creamy. It usually takes about 20 mins to cook, never leave it unattended. Keep stirring gently with your jug handy, if stock finishes then use remaining water in the kettle. 5. In a cup mix the egg yolks with the grated lemon zest and half of the Parmesan cheese. Stir them into the cooked risotto for about 1 min on low heat, then take it off the hob. 6. Sprinkle with some finely chopped parsley and the rest of the cheese, then serve immediately. Nothing really prepares you for this blissful symphony of flavours!

For instance, attending Mohamed Salah’s ambassadorship press conference in England, managing other global visits that included sharing Vodafone success stories in terms of women empowerment and diversity in the presence of international business leaders and government officials. In addition to attending high-level meetings with government representatives to discuss the implementation of innovative services related to applying digital transformation and financial inclusion, which comes in alignment with the government’s 2030 vision. Women empowerment is indeed a very crucial part of Saad’s plan to innovate and constantly develop Vodafone Egypt as a whole, especially in the field of PR and communications.

The secret behind the success of Vodafone Egypt’s External Communications department is none other than their very own Senior Manager and boss woman, Noha Saad. Throughout her career path, Saad has always been interested in the media and the art of communication; this led her to working in different fields that had to do with representing an iconic global brand like Vodafone in terms of its messaging, citizenship role, marketing, and PR communication plan. With 20 years of experience in corporate communications, corporate responsibility, marketing, communications and public relations - PR has always been at the core of Saad’s diverse experience which later shaped her to become Vodafone Egypt’s External Communications Senior Manager. Saad graduated from faculty of Commerce. Prior to Vodafone, she spent 7 years at promoseven PR handeling major accounts and brands like CocaCola, General Motors, Gillette, Boeing…etc. “The practice of Public Relations in the telecom sector is very crucial when it comes to making a positive change in companies’ external communication with stakeholders,” said Saad. Saad’s scope of work often encompasses much

She believes women are currently taking over the digital world with exceptional social skills that are dominating the PR and communication scene, positioning themselves as top public relations leaders, as the digital revolution has opened a plethora of opportunities for men and women alike. “Digital hubs and influencers have prevailed and become an essential part of our PR tactical plans and inevitable media arms in all PR campaigns. Traditional PR is effective, but by taking on digital PR, it is more likely that we succeed in reaching the desired goal. The millennial age requires digital PR efforts to be present for any type of business venture, as digital PR also improves the SEO value through pushing content on various online platforms,” said Saad about why it’s crucial for Vodafone to embrace new options, including influencer and digital hubs to keep up with today’s fast-paced world. Last but not least, Saad encourages young calibers who are interested to enter the PR space to always be open to challenges rather than cowering away from them. In fact they should leverage on these challenges to develop their communication and social skills, as they are the two main pillars to lean on in their steady ascent up the ladder of success.

She’s the proud mother of a handsome young man who’s studying at New Gzia University, and when she’s not working Saad loves cooking and travelling in addition to being a passionate football fan. October 2021 • IDENTITY 55
