or the past month it seemed like we were caught up in a never-ending flurry of our anniversary celebration and just now have found our shoes underneath of us again. But before we move on with a fresh volume of issues, we would like to thank everyone who was a part of our very special decade anniversary. Whether it was

from partying with us at Gu Bar in Zamalek, or preparing for the event, or supporting the anniversary issue, it meant so much to us to have so many wonderful people by our side. Now we are back to business as usual and are very happy to start volume 11 fresh with a fashion issue bulging at the seams with all of the latest trends of the season.

Answers

Mostly As Congratulations, you’re definitely not a shopaholic. However, you might be a bit tight when it comes to shopping. Maybe get yourself a few new pieces every now and then. Mostly Bs You’re a responsible mature adult who knows how to handle their own finances, yet still manages to look classy! Mostly Cs Dear lord, you need help! You’re spending all your money, even the pounds that don’t exist, on clothes. You’ll probably end up homeless, from all the debts you’re in. If this happens, remember that you could always resell the clothes with the tags still on them!

A bad outfit is not the only way you can be unfashionable. If you lack a graceful presence and appropriate behaviour you can leave an unflattering impression. There are times when we commit social faux pas without even being aware of the fact that we are doing so, so here are some quick tips to help you maintain a graceful set of mannerisms in social events. Put Your Handbag, Clutch or Purse In the Correct Place When Seated This one is a bit tricky, as it really depends on the size and style of your tote. If you have a small clutch, simply place it on your lap. If you’re carrying a satchel or a messenger bag, hang it on the edge of your seat. If you’re handbag is rather big in size, either place it on the floor by your seat or place it on a nearby chair that is not occupied. Do Not, Under Any Circumstances, Fix/Apply Makeup During a Social Event This is a mistake committed by many women that, when made, leaves a not-so-positive impression. Getting out your compact mirror and applying lipstick, powdering your T-zone or fixing your eyeliner, is a no-no. Simply excuse yourself and head to the restroom to do that, no matter how comfortable you feel in the setting. Know What Each Dress Code Means Dress codes can be a bit tricky, so here’s a rundown of the most frequently used ones.

Black Tie: A Black Tie event is of a formal nature, so your clothes should follow suit. A long gown, an elegant jumpsuit, or just suit would be appropriate. Cocktail: A cocktail party is, by no means, a formal event.

Your attire should be a tad dressy yet still effortless. We recommend a short, possibly patterned dress or a little black dress with slinky heels.

16

OCT

* identity-mag.com

Business Casual: This event is calling for attire that is smart and work-appropriate, yet still lively. A pencil skirt with an elegant, colourful top would work, or pants with a shirt. A blazer would also be appropriate. Hold Your Drink or Clutch in Your Left Hand When at a social event, make sure that your drink or tote is held in your left rather than your right hand. This simply makes shaking hands with everyone you meet smoother and easier. What’s Better, Fashionably Late or On Time? Here’s the Deal Well, first things first: never show up to any social gathering earlier than expected - that’s just awkward for the host who might not have everything ready. Secondly, if you want to be ‘fashionably’ late, do not, by any chance walk in two hours after you’re expected - that’s just rude. You can, however, turn up a maximum of 20 minutes after you’re expected and still not have crossed the line of rudeness. For the most part, try to keep your timings sharp.

What to use: Black pencil eyeliner: This is the base for the look. A waterproof eyeliner or a kohl pencil are recommended. Medium colour eyeliner: The other colour can vary, but it needs to be a medium dark to light colour to give the fading look. Recommended colours: Brown, purple or burgundy for a dark sophisticated. Or go for a more colourful look with greens and blues, depending on what you will be wearing.

Professional Tips: Apply eye primer to make the look last longer. Have your brows defined using a brow kit. Make sure your eyebrows are light, and not darker than the eyeliners used. Wear a nude lipstick to not take attention from the eyes. If you want to go for a more dramatic look, make sure you have fake lashes.

How to apply it: -Never start applying any makeup without cleaning your face. Make sure you have no makeup left overs. -Start with the lighter shade of eyeliner first around the eye and underneath it. The reason why you should start with a lighter shade is because it’s easier to fix, unlike the darker colour. -Smudge with a clean finger or a brush to the crest line. You can have it slightly above the crest to give the illusion of a wider eye, but make sure it’s not right under your eyebrows. -Start applying the black eyeliner on the upper and lower waterline. -Apply the black eyeliner again right above the upper eyelashes and around the eye. -Start smudging until it blends with the medium colour to give the fading look. -Apply the black eyeliner again on the upper eye, but this time keep it as it is without smudging. -Finally, apply a genuine amount of mascara or fake lashes.

The Craziest and Most Controversial Facials of All Time 28

OCT

* identity-mag.com

We all know the age-old saying: “Beauty is Pain.” True to this idea, throughout history people have gone through extensive procedures and treatments to retain and enhance their looks. Let’s face it, humans are a vain species. Some beauty treatments though have raised quite a few eyebrows due to their excessive, well, bizarreness. We’ve rounded up the most insane ones for you:

1

The Vampire Facelift

Its name alone should make you shudder. This rather gag-inducing beauty treatment was brought to the spotlight by none other than the queen of controversy herself, Kim Kardashian, who posted a picture of herself while undergoing it. So, what’s the treatment all about? Basically, blood is drawn from your own body, the platelets are separated from it and then spread all over your face to prevent skin aging and wrinkling. Umm, we’ll take wrinkles over this mess any day!

6

Leech Therapy

You know those tiny slimy things everyone shudders at the sight of? People actually willingly allow a bunch of leeches to roam around and suck blood out of their bare skin - sorry for the graphic details, but it’s TRUE. Even Demi Moore is a frequent user of this absolutely insane treatment. Apparently leeches can suck out toxins and detoxify your system, but having a bunch of them dunked on your body is a pretty hefty price to pay to get all invigorated and energised.

2

24-Carat Gold Facial

7

Snake Venom Cream

3

Bird Poop Facial

8

Snail Facial

Why wear gold jewellery on your body when you can wear liquid gold on your face, right? You heard us right, this treatment basically involves smearing your face with molten gold to rejuvenate it and a certain supermodel posted a picture of herself doing just that; none other than Bar Refaeli.

At this point, we wish we were kidding, but no, this is an actual treatment that is constantly used by Posh Spice, aka Victoria Beckham. What Mrs. Beckham, and other beauty enthusiasts, get to smear on their faces is basically a cream made from dehydrated bird poop, specifically the poop of Nightingales. It supposedly makes your face more glow-y. Hmm, we’d rather use some contouring and highlighting to achieve that enviable glow though.

4

Placenta Facial

These keep getting better and better, don’t they? This facial is exactly what its name suggests: it’s a facial made from sheep placentas. Apparently it’s known for being extremely hydrating… and costly; the facial costs around $500. Who uses it? Many A-listers, including J.Lo, Harry Styles and Simon Cowell.

5

The beauty maven Gwyneth Paltrow is a proud user of this one, a cream with snake venom that supposedly plumps up your face. It’s said to be yet another alternative to Botox. And we always thought we should try to avoid being in contact with snake venom rather than smear it all over our faces… So here’s the deal, to get this facial done, you’ve got to sit there and allow snails to crawl all over your face as they slather their slime over the skin because snail slime is said to have anti-aging, as well as acnecuring properties. Ask Katie Holmes, she’s a frequenter of the treatment. Hey, the French EAT snails, okay?

On an ending note, the sky seems to be the limit when it comes to how far people are willing to go to enhance their looks because apparently the queasier a treatment is, the better its results are, or so they say. The question here is, how far would you be willing to go?

Aliaa Serry

JUNIOR EDITOR

Bee Venom Mask

Used by none other than Kate Middleton before her wedding day, it’s a cream that contains bee-sting venom out there in the beauty world which is supposed to be some sort of alternative to Botox. Hmm, we’re a bit sceptical, but the Duchess of Cambridge always seems to sport a youthful glow, so perhaps it does work!

Filling you in on fillers

his year’s beauty phenomenon seems to be that women are more confident with getting work done to their faces – from extreme makeup, like contorting, to getting face injections. One word that's been heard a lot though is “fillers,” from Kylie Jenner’s infamous lip fillers, to Megan Fox’s cheek fillers, to Jennifer Aniston’s wrinkles fillers. No matter where one looks, women are getting fillers for different reasons. Many are confused by the idea of fillers. Does it make your features bigger, or is it used to cover up wrinkles, or is it even used as a nose job replacement? The answer to all of these questions is yes, fillers do all of this. After researching and interviewing cosmetic surgeons, we found it is like real life Photoshop. It’s the safest, fastest, and cheapest way to fix minor flaws on your face. Unlike botox, fillers don’t actually kill any nerves and have very minor side effects. Fillers simply add volume to your face’s features to give a wrinkle free and smooth look, and is mostly used to make the face look only healthier and younger, not overdone. Even though it’s mostly used for wrinkles, it’s extremely popular among younger women.

Recommended age: Fillers can be done at any age, but are recommended for women over 25. Lasting time: Stays for an average of 6 months, recommended to get refilled after.

Fillers can be used for

Filling in wrinkles: It’s the safest way to get rid of wrinkles. They’re mostly injected at the outer eye corners or on the forehead, and they simply fills under the skin and gives the skin more space to stretch, which prevents most of the wrinkles. Keep in mind that, unlike botox, fillers don’t completely remove the wrinkles. Fillers only makes them less noticeable, which will give a very natural look. Depressed Scar Removal: Fillers are used to get rid of scars, especially acne scars. They’re never removed completely, but will be much less noticeable than before.

Fillers can be natural or synthetic, but both are as safe as the other. Of course, this is only assuming they are done by a professional. The looks and feel don’t differ, it’s only a matter of preference from the surgeons, or what’s easier for the surgeons to get from the medical suppliers. Most of the fillers used in Egypt are “Collagen” based fillers, and they’re the cheapest, and most commonly used type of fillers.

Lip Plumping: Lip plumping is currently the most popular use of fillers, thanks to the Kardashians. Lip fillers can make your lips seem more plump, but if they are over done, it can do more harm than good. The lips are very sensitive and the lips could bruise or the skin could be cut, which can cause many infections. Make sure you’re doing the right amount of it, and always listen to your doctor, they know what’s best.

More about Fillers

Removing Dark Circles Under the Eyes: Dark circles are mostly caused by loss of fats under the eye and/or the cheek area. Fillers will give underneath the eye a healthy look with the adding of volume.

Procedure time: 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how many injections are used and the patient’s pain tolerance.

Shallow Contorting: Whether you want a round cheek, or extremely high contorted face, fillers can do it! It can be done for young women for enhancement, or older women to look younger.

Price: Prices range from 800 LE to 3000 LE, depending on the procedure.

Pain: It’s the same pain level as any normal injection.

30

OCT

* identity-mag.com

Dos and Don’ts

Do your research, from looking up surgeons, to reading testimonials, to looking at before and after pictures. Don’t let a random person at a spa talk you into getting injections without knowing what you’re getting yourself into first. Do ask your doctor what type of fillers they’re using and look it up. Doctors love it when their patients are alert and know what they’re doing. Don’t have it done with a doctor that you’re not comfortable with. If you’re not feeling a connection with your doctor, then you’ll never get exactly what you want and it’s a lose/lose situation.

Side Effects It’s rare that you will have side effects from fillers, and even the side effects are minor. It’s almost nearly impossible to have an extreme side effect. Minor side effects may include bruising, swelling, and redness as soon as you’re injected. Other side effects might be tiny bumps under the skin, but they usually last for only a few days. If not, then you must go back to your doctor to have it fixed. If you’re using “Collagen” injections, make sure you’re not allergic to it.

AUTUMN Fashion Forecast

This month is scattered with opportunities for quick getaways, but by now it has most likely sunk in that beach time is dwindling. At the risk of sounding all too clichĂŠ, winter is coming. And while that may mean less frequent coastal excursions, it also means getting real about your inner-city autumn wardrobe. Amidst the flurry of forward-looking Spring/Summer 2016 Fashion Week season, here is your go-to guide on what key trends to look out for this fall.

Colours of the Wind Full disclosure - this A/W season is NOT about winter brights. Runways were abound with more forgiving colour palettes overall, especially given the overarching themes of minimalism and the 70s comeback. As a result, monochromatic designs reign supreme.

Monochrome- Chanel Ready to Wear AW15

Left & bottom left: You can choose between simple straightforward grey ensembles and bolder black & white window patterns. Feel free to mix and match for a more eclectic take on monochrome.

32

OCT

* identity-mag.com

70s Colors- Tom Ford Ready to Wear AW15

Monochrome- Balenciaga Ready to Wear AW15

70s Colors- Alberta Ferretti Ready to Wear AW15

Bottom right: We are still obsessed with retro, so you can channel your 70s vibe through pairing together more earthly tones, like burnt orange, rich olives and neutral camels and browns. Go for a head to toe look or just accent with naturally hued accessories.

Marni - Woven wool cape

Burberry Prorsum Color Block Blanket Poncho

Cape- Dolce & Gabbana Ready to Wear AW15

Cape- Celine Ready to Wear AW15

Baby, it’s cold outside One thing is for sure, we are spoiled for choice this autumn/winter when it comes to outerwear options. Let us begin with a favourite among the fashion forward crowd for some seasons now - the cape.

Right: If you are partial to more classic garb, then consider substituting your everyday neutral coat or jacket for a brocade clad one in metallic or vibrant tones. It is all about textured silks and velvets when it comes to this standout piece of outerwear. Don’t forget to hone in on the oversized buttons for some extra detail. Bottom right: Fur and Faux Fur are making a huge comeback (though it arguably never really leaves A/W collections) in an abundant way. We are seeing fur accents on cuffs and luxurious collars as well as full on power furs. If committing to that fluffy look is too much for you, opt for this season’s microtrend, a fur stole. **BONUS POINT: you can probably find this tucked away in your grandmother’s closet. Score!**

Brocade Coat- Gucci Ready to Wear AW15

Top: The cape has morphed into dresses and has been given various textures from suede to satin and is even being belted. If you are into optical illusion and mystery silhouettes, try out a cape when it gets a little nippy outside.

Fur Stole- 3.1 Phillip Lim Ready to Wear AW15

Fur- Marc Jacobs Ready to Wear AW15

Bomber Jacket- Alexander Wang Ready to Wear AW15

Bottom left: For the more athleisurely oriented out there, pick up an ultra-cool bomber jacket to throw over your effortless sportluxe look. Make sure you opt for the more gutsy variation in metallic and reflective sheen to brighten your wardrobe.

A Victorian, a Hippie and an Astronaut walk into a bar… No, this is not the beginning of a vulgar joke, it is actually a pretty fair representation of fall’s most anticipated sartorialist tendencies.

Victorian- Alexander McQueen Ready to Wear AW15

Pussy Bow- Chanel Ready to Wear AW15

Left: Immerse yourself in romantic Victorian lace and necklines a la Jane Austen. It is all about sheer chiffons and lacy feminine fabrics culminating in intricate feminine detail. Full skirts and dresses by the yard and beautifully crafted sleeves are key features in Victorianinspired collections. Introduce this trend into your wardrobe by donning the every-occasion-friendly pussy bow on a high collar neckline and give your cleavage a rest.

Bottom: Along the same trajectory of femininity, the fashion world is celebrating womanhood like no other in an exquisitely crafted medley of haute hippie couture. Softly patterned bohemian silhouettes floated across the catwalks for AW 15/16 and have found their way into every woman’s closet. Even better, boho-chic is best suited for lavishly layering (think fringe vests and embellishments).

Middle: Yearning for some more detail to adorn your outfit this fall? Accentuate (or create) your hourglass figure by drawing attention to your shapely waist using broad belts. Go ahead, belt your coat, shirt, trousers or dress with this season’s most versatile accessory. Word of advice on this one: go big, or go home!

Top left: If this is all too cute for your taste, opt for the more sophisticated feel of futuristic and minimalist lines. The clean and crisp cuts are mostly in neutral colours such as winter white and charcoal with a decided nod to 90s necklines - the strapless. Coupled with wide trousers, the minimalist is unforgivingly biased towards impeccable geometric cuts. Take note of the micro-trend that comes hand in hand with this look: a nice broad fabric choker around the neck.

Bottom left: Finally, at your most basic staple level you will find the return of the polo-neck. As mentioned earlier, there is a key emphasis on the neck this fall and giving it a sculpted and elegant shape. Keep your neck toasty by getting comfy in a ribbed turtleneck number that can be paired with virtually any item in your wardrobe.

IN TRANSIT

6 simple tips & tricks for your wardrobe transition Transitioning from summer to winter is never an easy feat, especially when the weather is constantly playing tricks on you. So how do you outsmart Mother Nature? Well, a simple jacket could do the trick, but let’s try and get a bit more creative this time around. Here is a guide to fulfill your transition wardrobe needs without compromising on style. The vest waistcoat has become a not-sosurprising go-to garment for many Egyptian women out there. It can add just the right amount of texture to your outfit, but also flatters the physique. Wear a tight vest to highlight your waist or a longer one for those days when you need more coverage. The vest of choice this autumn is undoubtedly fringed this season and can be worn over a dress or as added detail over jeans and a T-shirt. There is no rule that dictates that you absolutely must layer in order to avoid that fall chill. A quick adjustment to your footwear can be just as effective and exciting. Time to give those painted toe nails the rest they deserve and snuggle them into your choice boots for the season. You can pair your boots or ankle booties with this season’s flare jeans, your favorite summer dress or romper. Make sure you select a nice pair that will stay with you well into the harsher winter months.

Layering has long been the solution to the demi-saison dilemma. We are all familiar with the shirt and jacket combo and all of its variations. But what happens if you decide to layer your favourite summer top, the crop, and repurpose it for fall? Pure magic, that’s what happens! Throw it on over a crisp white shirt or flouncy chiffon blouse for a playful mix in texture.

If you feel compelled to stay within your comfort zone and reach for your nearest cardigan, then consider updating your cardi collection. With fall taking us to great new lengths, cocoon yourself in a knit duster. Knit is perfect for those in-between seasonal gusts of wind and lends a laid back air. Try it out in a neutral colour for a passepartout staple.

If you dare to try the runway skirt/dress-over-pants layered look as seen at Chanel and Jil Sanders, then make sure you pull it off as skilfully as possible. You have been warned; this is not for the average dresser, because if executed incorrectly this look will brand you as “bee2a” rather than avant-garde. First, select your favourite simple skirt or dress, preferably of light fabric. Second, supplement with a fitted pair of straight leg pants. Finally, avoid pairing patterns (unless you’re already an expert at this) and stick to solids.

If all else fails, you can add some subtle flair to your getup using the simplest art of accessorizing: socks and tights. You can try wearing chunky knit socks with loafers, oxfords or even chunky sandals to keep those ankles bundled up. For an all-over cover when wearing shorter hemlines, feel free to go nuts with fun and whimsical tights underneath your shorts, skirts and dresses (think lace!)

What Happens When the East Goes Out of Style?

O

n May 18th, at the Greene Space in New York City, I found myself sitting in the audience of a panel discussion moderated by Reina Lewis, professor of Cultural Studies at the London College of Fashion. The discussion was on Modest Fashion and its new found popularity in the West. Throughout the discussion, the topic of trendiness came up several times. Lewis stated that when things are trendy and all the white kids are wearing them they become cool. And then a few years later, they are no longer on trend and, therefore, no longer cool. That statement lingered with me so much more than I expected.

There is no denying that for the past two years, the fashion industry has been leaning towards more “modest” clothing. We see now, more than ever, longer and more loosely fitted clothing on sale in every major department store and retailer. Last year, Dana Karan launched, for the first time ever, a Ramadan collection geared towards Middle Eastern women. This past Ramadan, Mango did the same. Not too long ago, modesty was viewed as especially particular to the East. Therefore, with modest clothing being in high demand now, it was inevitable that we’d begin to see Eastern styles and garments (Kaftans, detailed beading and embroidery, saturated colours, African and Beduoin prints) also being taken up by Western designers. While this was exciting news to many, I was afraid. What happens when modesty is no longer fashionable? Will South Asian and Middle Eastern inspired design fade away with it? More importantly, what happens when the fashion world decides that it has soaked up all that it can from my culture and is done with it?

42

OCT

* identity-mag.com

I remember standing in a pro-Palestine rally in 2007 when poet and activist Remi Kanazi mentioned how annoyed he was that the keffiyeh (a traditional scarf) was on trend. I didn’t understand why he would say that. How amazing was it that something from his culture was now fashionable? A year later, when it was considered fashion suicide to still be caught in a keffiyeh, his words made sense. Since then, I’ve been reluctant to jump to excitement when I see an ethnic item or design be “on trend.” Valentino has always pulled inspiration from Asian styles. This was probably the reason I loved his designs so much in the first place. However, browsing through Valentino’s SS15 looks, which were very clearly inspired by Asian and specifically South Asian fashion, I couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. I could not make sense of why I felt that way, especially since I do not come from South Asian descent. That feeling came up again in an even stronger sense when I walked into Anthropology last week and my ears caught the sound of Bedouin music playing in the background, the kind that I’d hear in Sinai, Egypt. I felt an entitlement over anything Eastern and even though I understood that I was being ludicrous, I couldn’t fight the feeling. Why was it that when a big designer or retailer picked up a design or item from a specific culture it became “cool” worldwide? And how should we react when a few months or years later, the fashion world decides that it is no longer suitable to be “on trend”? In the midst of my annoyance and anger, it dawned on me that I was having an internal conversation that was past due. The fashion industry has already gotten its hands on Eastern design, and I could be as protective as I want to be but that won’t change the facts. I needed to start a new discussion. A little over a decade ago when H&M, Zara, and Forever 21

were reaching new heights of popularity and revolutionizing the way big designers approached fashion, it seemed that fast fashion was the only option available and we were forced to embrace it. Those companies are still doing phenomenal today and with good reason; they appeal to millions who seek trendy and affordable fashion. Lately though, it seems that stores like Anthropology and Free People, who have been designing the same style of clothing since their founding, are receiving special attention. One explanation for this is that these brands seem to be catering to a specific kind of girl, one who has already decided what she likes, feels best in, and will continue to seek forever. Social media, specifically Instagram, has shed light on these girls. Personal style Instagrammers, even modest ones from the East, have taken over our feeds and have started demanding what they like. The fashion world has no other option but to keep up. Sometimes when those demands weren’t met, they’d go out and create their own clothes themselves. With social media making the idea of creating startups conceivable for so many, not finding what you like to wear or what’s appropriate for you to wear in the big name stores isn’t so scary anymore. We see this with bloggers, like Dina Tokio, Yalda Golsharifi, and Nadia Azmy deciding to create their own fashion lines and taking a bet on their personal style and the histories it derives from. Middle Eastern and South Asian women will always exist and now they will be validating their existence on our news feeds. Because of that I don’t see embroidery or intricate beading going anywhere. I’m going to bet that the majority of the girls who are rocking Kaftans now will be rocking them five years from now. Will we see the fast fashion stores carrying those items for many years to come? I doubt it. Call me overly optimistic, but I think that the brands who cater to niche markets are the ones who will continue to survive, simply because they remind us that although the fashions are always changing, people’s developed style rarely does. This gives an opportunity for younger designers and smaller stores to cater to that niche market even if the big retailers and designers no longer want to.

IDENTITY advice

Are You Distorting Your Reality? Depression can have a number of causes, one of which is unhealthy thought patterns. In his landmark 1980 book Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, psychiatrist David Burns identifies many cognitive distortions that can increase the likelihood of depression. Cognitive distortions are unhealthy ways of thinking, and in this article some of these distortions are reviewed. Over generalization is the tendency to apply the results of one situation to many other situations that could have different results. For example, if you failed one test, it would be an over generalization to then say, "I will fail all of my future tests." Another cognitive distortion is jumping to conclusions. This distortion occurs when a person assumes to know the end result of a situation, even though there is no way to be completely certain of that end result. A person who is about to enter a room full of strangers may jump to the conclusion before entering the room that he or she will be disliked, without knowing the reality. Catastrophizing refers to the tendency to focus on all of the ways a situation could end in catastrophe, even if they are not realistic. A person who is catastrophizing will continuously ask themselves, "What if this situation goes wrong?" One more distortion is developing an external locus of control. Our locus of control is where we believe control of a situation lies, and when we have an external locus of control we believe that outside forces control our fate. For instance, we may blame others for our failures. An external locus of control leads to feelings of helplessness. The key to dispelling unhealthy patterns of thought such as these is by developing and replacing them with healthy thought patterns. Fortunately, Burns identifies some ways to dispel cognitive distortions. First of all, it is important to accurately identify the cognitive distortion that you are experiencing. Which of the above distortions most closely matches your thoughts? Once you have identified the type of distortions we typically experience, it becomes easier to ward off those distortions to think in a more realistic manner. When experiencing negative thoughts, it can be helpful to monitor the way we talk to ourselves.

56

OCT

* identity-mag.com

Sometimes, we speak to ourselves less kindly than we would speak to a friend. We might call ourselves "stupid" when we would not say such things to a friend. Practicing kind "self-talk" can improve your psychological health. Another method of dispelling cognitive distortions is by removing ourselves from our emotions and looking at just the objective evidence. It can help to make a list of the reasons for your thoughts. It can also help to make a list of your successes, talents and good attributes. Seeking outside opinions is a good way to put our thoughts into context. We might have trouble thinking realistically about a situation because of our emotions. Family and friends can offer good advice when we are uncertain. These are just a few of the distortions and their fixes. The methods of replacing cognitive distortions are helpful for thinking in a calm, reasoned, and positive way. Distortions, on the other hand, can lead to depression and feelings of helplessness. By stepping back and reevaluating our thoughts, we can learn to control them. SOURCES - Grohol, J. M. Dear Frustrated and Angry, Please stop being frustrated and angry! You are the victim of a sexual predator. I would imagine you to be a middle class girl who comes from a traditional conservative family, and that your father is either not present or was too detached and intimidating when you were growing up. You have no experience in life, sheltered, and due to all the above, you have the experience level of someone who is actually 18 not 26. Like all girls, you were looking for love, but you were very unlucky to cross paths with this man. He could see right through you and he realized how emotionally vulnerable you were at the time. He said and did the right things until you fell into his trap. I am not saying that you did not make a mistake, I am just clarifying the facts that most people will not tell you. Here is my advice 1) When you look at him, I do not want you to see an exlover, a lost love, a boss, or a man! When you look at him, I want you to see a predator! Use Google to find images of the word predator and look at those images until you believe that this creature is a predator!

office love

gone wrong

Dear Marwa, I had a sexual relationship with my boss who is 64 years old, while I was a virgin girl who is only 26 years old. I recently discovered that he had another sexual relationship with a 46-year-old woman who works with us too, and they might even be secretly married! I told him that I read their messages, but he denied it. I got completely away from him, but he keeps calling me. I don't reply, but I feel so bad about myself, especially since he is the first man for me to do anything sexual with and I feel like I destroyed my first time having sex with such a loser. I feel cheap and it kills me inside that he preferred that older woman over me. And I'm wondering why he did anything with me when he has another woman to have sex with!!! What should I do to get over it? Should I leave the workplace? He destroys my self-confidence whenever I think about how he was using me! Please help me to get out of this mess I put myself in. Thanks, Frustrated and Angry

2) Cut him out of your life. No more calls, messages, meetings, or any encounters of any sort. 3) Do not run away. Neither change your job nor change your number. You are not escaping from him; you are facing him! Stay and let him know that your answer is no! 4) Do not waste more time on him; do not waste time hating him, loving him, thinking of him, or questioning his motives. He is a sick person and people like him do not follow logic. He hurt you because he could and he is now hurting another woman. 5) Be mean! If he insists on talking to you, threaten to tell his wife, his secret wife, and his whole circle. Show him that you truly have nothing more to lose and that you will be the scandal that haunts him! 6) Be firm! Do not give reasons or justifications! Just say no out loud and clear followed by threats! 7) Learn from this mistake. See what made you fall for him and fix it. If you were bored, fill your life with activities. If you were lonely, make friends and get a pet. If you were desperate or insecure, work on your self-esteem, selfrespect, and love yourself. He did not destroy your selfconfidence, if you had any, you wouldn’t have fallen for him! 8) If you need help with the above-mentioned points, get a life coach or read self-help books. 9) Start with: All Men Are Jerks Until Proven Otherwise! This is a great book by Daylle Deanna Schwartz. 10) Be strong! You are young and this relationship is not your burial stone; this is a huge stepping stone towards gaining a better understanding of yourself and of relationships.

Fad Diets

not

so Fashionable

58

OCT

* identity-mag.com

When it comes to dieting and wanting to look their best, most people usually have the same goal: to achieve the optimal result in the shortest and easiest manner possible. With this target in mind many turn to dieting, and more often than not follow a fashionable programme or cleanse thinking this is the best option. From a proper nutritional standpoint, we call these programmes 'fad diets.' Fad diets make you lose weight quickly, yes, but not without a price. Fad diets prevent you from benefiting from nutrients, make you lose weight in the wrong way, decrease your athletic performance, can make you feel tired and unfocused, and put your body in starvation mode leading to undesirable physiological results that can do more damage than good. Famous examples of fad diets that prescribe an almost complete lack of carbohydrates or complete lack of fats can result in slowed down metabolism, digestive failures, decreased energy levels, and changes to body odour. THE MYTHS YOU SHOULDN'T BELIEVE

Limiting food choices Consuming the same kind of food in any quantity and limiting others for days or weeks prevents your body from receiving and benefiting from important nutrients. Substituting multivitamins for the foods you avoid because of the diet is neither sufficient nor healthy.

Carbs and fats are the enemy Both carbohydrates and fats are essential components of your physiology. Carbohydrates are an essential source of energy for your body, and the fibres found within are essential for your body’s digestive health and metabolism. Furthermore, distinctions need to be made between simple carbs and complex carbs. Similarly, fats can be divided into healthy and unhealthy. Omega-3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial, for example.

one that doesn't make too many radical changes to your lifestyle, so that it won't be a shock to your system.

You don't need to exercise Physical activity is crucial for your health and physique. Alongside a balanced diet, aim to exercise 3-4 times a week doing something you enjoy. Swim, cycle, run, walk, dance, do anything... Just move!

It's too difficult The biggest myth of all. Eating healthy food requires effort and commitment, but it is doable. You'll be able to treat yourself every once in a while; one cheat meal won't make you fat, just like one salad won't make you thin. There are an unlimited number of success stories you can take inspiration from, and in the end the results will speak for themselves! FORGET THE FADS, FOCUS ON NUTRITION At the end of the day, the road to improvement is about dedication. There is no magic diet or cleanse that will burn fat instantly or alter your genes, and there is no substitute to eating clean, balanced, healthy meals. Fad diets may be popular and might bring about short term results, but they do so at the expense of your long term wellbeing. Your health and performance are more important than the way you might look on the seventh day of a diet that most probably won't last a week. Whatever your Aim is, it is absolutely attainable, especially with a balanced nutrition plan that supports your goal. Fad diets don't work because they presume that one diet can be effective on all persons, regardless of their differences in physique, metabolism, body composition, size, health, age, and gender. It is important to have a nutrition plan tailored to your needs and characteristics. Dedicating yourself to your goal and working towards it are the keys to a better lifestyle. Don’t take your health and physique for granted, and remember that the smart way is not the easy and quick way.

Quick solutions are guaranteed Quick solutions aren't smart solutions. You might lose weight, but it'll probably be in the form of muscle loss, and when you do regain the weight, it'll probably be in the form of fats. Instead, you should make sure you get a nutrient-dense plan that allows you to reach your target in a healthy and sustainable manner, which will ensure you don't revert back to the way you were again.

Nada Nouh

a certified Sports Performance Nutritionist with THE TRI FACTORY

The stricter the plan, the better The stricter the plan, the faster the results. At the same time though, the stricter the plan, the less likely you'll follow it. If the plan is too strict for you, it most likely won’t work. When selecting a programme, try following

No matter where you take a Libra on a date, they will find a way to make it fun and exciting

“

Libra is the seventh sign of the Zodiac. Those who are born during this time are ruled by Venus; they grace the world with their charm and beauty. While the first six signs of the zodiac focus on the individual, the last six focus on the individual's contact with others and with the world. Libras are focused on their surroundings and how they relate to them. They are happiest when surrounded with other people; they appreciate excitement, new situations and the unusual. They make friends with people from all walks of life, as they have mastered the art of relationships, whether it comes to romantic relationships, friendships or business. However, in their struggle to maintain peace within a group and make everyone happy, they tend to hide their own emotions and this results in confusion regarding how they really feel about a situation. They often have a hard time saying no, and will do favors for people even if they are too busy.

If you have the chance of being in a relationship with a Libra, do not expect them to put any solid input into planning a date. They tend to be quite indecisive, but wherever you take them, they will find a way to make it fun and exciting. A party would be a good place to take them, as they are very sociable and will enjoy meeting new people and being introduced to your friends. Libras also appreciate beauty and feel at home in posh surroundings, so taking them out to dinner at a fancy restaurant followed by a late-night walk in a nice neighbourhood would definitely please them. To keep a Libra woman close to you, make her feel special and show some romantic gestures (love notes and flowers will be highly appreciated) to keep her interested.
