Hi friends, Are you in business and want to go farther? 75 percent of business owners close within the first few years. That’s a monstrous odd to work against, but we must. We are America, and we believe in the spirit of business and building enterprise. But let’s not be foolish. Let’s not put blinders on and think our success will come because we think it. Let us not look to someone else to create our backbone. Let us not surrender our choice to succeed. Let us build our business with confidence that through the muck there are areas worth investing into. In doing my part here are opportunities that you can take advantage of through me and my organization:

sounds like something worth investing in, consider joining one of the IWJ supported women’s shows. You must be plugged into the IWJ newsletter (find the “subscribe” button on the website) to know which shows we support. We currently are registering vendors for the 2015 Idaho Women’s Conference - for business & life.

Blogging for Business – A 7-hour workshop over days that allows you to blog for three months upon completion. Used for sharpening your skills, forwarding information about what you do, or representing other people, get started with our guarantee. For 99 dollars you are guaranteed to learn how to blog and then become a blogger on the number one women in business magazine in Idaho.

Guaranteed to Be Seen by 10,000 – Have I got the program for you! Unlike the selling of a bridge, this is guaranteed. You will be seen by 10,000 monthly on the IWJ social channels for a minimal monthly fee. Our results are proven - your book, event, or service will be seen by 10,000 monthly. It’s about the same price as a quarter page ad plus you get an ad in the magazine and listed on the IWJ website as a bonus. Annual contracts will include an article feature once during the 12 month period. No more guess work, as a marketer, I will do the research and ensure we reach the target audience and goals of the campaign. Reach out to me by email for more information: KarleenAndresen@gmail.com.

Membership Listing – Attend 4 events hosted by the IWJ and get listed on the website for free. It’s that simple. Attend The Color Run, a Girl Scout promoted function, an IWJ SNAP event, an IWJ Social Snack event, any trainings we offer, or write comments on blog posts on the IWJ website. To do this, go to the website and click “registration” on the top left of the page.

Be the Expert – Want to be like those experts you read about in magazines. Wonder how it happens. This program takes the public relations concept to a new level. Instead of paying a monthly retainer and hoping you get expert positioning, I will guarantee it. If it would be nice to see your name in a magazine regularly, an ad, and have monthly consulting with a marketer, then consider inquiring about this program.

PowerPlayer Membership – Become a Power Player by advertising in some way with the IWJ and you will be speaking at an IWJ supported networking meeting along with your ad and listing on the website under “Power Players.” The same applies to any of our annual programs or speaking programs.

Speak On Stage with a Headliner – Another guaranteed program. This is for the discerning business professional and business ownership not necessary. If you want to speak on stage but need an entire marketing team to help you create your story, produce your material to offer, and train you, we will guarantee you will be on stage with a headliner within 12 months.

Monthly Power Networking – SNAP (info is on the website) is a free monthly networking meeting. We have power speakers, marketing training, and 20 business can display their goods for the 70+ attendees each month. We have seen nearly 3,000 business owners here, and we build business together! Women’s Show – The IWJ supports a women’s show biannually; that’s two per year for about 35 cents per person. If seeing 1,000 people in front of your store for a single day www.idahowomensjournal.com

All of these programs are listed on the www.IdahoWomensJournal.com website under Business Basics, Members, Subscribe, Workshops, or IWJ Events. Take a look. Hugs,

rriving fresh off a photo shoot with excitement in her eyes Vicki Hurst seems to be walking on air. She’s whirling from a business concept that was slow to take hold to having a photo shoot and being on the cover of a top Idaho magazine. “Life is good” she says. Hurst is a Pro-EFT™ Practitioner or Emotional Freedom Technique practitioner. She was introduced to this personal development tool, a method also known as “Tapping” three years ago. “Pro- EFT™ uses the meridian points of acupuncture and acupressure to release the emotional baggage that has people stuck in a place where they cannot progress down avenues of their life,” says Hurst. “You tap on those points and have a conversation, much like you might in your mind, but this time you talk it all the way through to positive thoughts.” As odd as it might seem to people outside of traditional medicines, Hurst knew tapping into these energy points could help her grow personally and professionally. It was 2011 when Pro-EFT™ entered Hurst’s life. She wanted a boost to help her advance with her home business. The success stories of her colleagues had her wondering “why not me?” and she sought counsel for her business. She was introduced to Tapping, but it would have to cross her path two more times before she really investigated the practice. The Tapping World Summit, was her real introduction to Pro-EFT™ and the experience resonated with her. “It’s one of those jaw dropping experiences that sometimes you have to see to believe.” When Hurst arrived home, she just could not stop talking about it. She said, “Tapping peeled back the layers like an onion.” Each layer exposed another depth of stagnation, pain, or limbo for her. She found she was www.idahowomensjournal.com

To connect with Vicki: www.EmotionalFreedomByVicki.com or email her at Vicki.FeelingFree@gmail.com repeating the same behavior with the same set of beliefs and not allowing herself to move forward. Her old beliefs like, “I don’t deserve this success....Why bother I am just going to fail because I fail at everything,” began to dissipate. “Tapping has helped me work through anxieties and fears. I understand now that a negative belief isn’t necessarily a truth, it’s just a thought, and that can be changed for the best.” Hurst’s personal life has benefited greatly from Tapping. Family and friends started taking notice of changes to “their Vicki” and would ask about the changes. To them she seemed

Release the emotional baggage that has people stuck in a place where they cannot progress down avenues of their life “brighter.” Her marriage has taken on a different tenderness and kindness. The Pro-EFT™ method has even helped Vicki and her husband improve their health by releasing weight and other negative energies. Her children have noticed a more tranquil Mom. Vicki has used this tool with her grandchildren to help them sleep better and find calmness at frenzied moments. These noticeable differences in the grandchildren led her children to inquire what it is their Mother is really doing. “Tapping is for a willing heart so I wait to be invited in” she says. As each of her five children approach her, she shares her Pro-EFT™ journey with them. Hurst’s zest for Tapping cannot be contained. At subsequent counseling sessions Vicki’s professional coach realized she repeatedly mentioned Pro-EFT™. This was an a-ha moment for Hurst that her home business was not her passion. Vicki’s passion is Tapping. She has found peace, growth, success, depth, and release in it. It’s no wonder she is pursuing her next level of Pro-EFT™ Practitioner certification with her mentor, Lindsay Kenny. By the end of summer Vicki Hurst will be Vicki Hurst, level IV Pro-EFT™ Practitioner. www.idahowomensjournal.com

Ask the Doc Pulling Out or by Isla Brazzil Signing Up Women all over the country are finding out what birth control method works best for them. An agreeable fact for the majority of them is that condoms are not fun, yet remembering and stressing over the birth control pack can also be a burden along with everything else. After a couple cocktails, the “pull out” method seems to be top choice. Making waves across the globe, this pull out method is growing in popularity creating what has been named the “pull out generation.” Tired of the hormones, skeptical of the intrauterine devices (IUD), and overall ready for a simpler way of doing the dirty deed, women have now turned to this method. It is important to distinguish the differences in women using the pull out method. Some women are married and committed while other women are not. Period tracker apps have given women motive to have sex without condoms by being able to watch when they are ovulating. Emergency contraception is also vital to the plan since it is risky business. If used perfectly, four out of 100 couples will get pregnant in the first year using this method. “The withdrawal method along with natural family planning is definitely more common in stable, monogamous relationships as those couples are generally more responsible and no longer concerned about STD’s with each other,” Dr. Shashi Ajmani said. Ajmani is a certified OBGyn in the Treasure Valley with years of experience under her belt in this category. “The STD risk is exactly why it is not ideal for people having casual sexual 6

relations to use this method. There is no level of intimate contact that is avoided by withdrawal so the opportunity for STD exposure is similar,” Ajmani added. “Pre-cum” is another definite scare factor of having sex using this method because it can possibly cause pregnancies. Although experts have concluded that pre-cum does not contain sperm, they have also theorized that there may be leftover swimmers in his urethra if the man had ejaculated recently. An example of this would be if a man had masturbated and ejaculated prior to going over to his girlfriend’s house and having sex. Although the pre-cum may not have contained sperm, there is a slight chance due to his earlier agenda that there would be “leftovers” and that this could be what causes pregnancy later on. “A friend of mine many years back got pregnant using withdrawal and had an abortion, which haunted her for a long time,” Ajmani said. The pull out method is nothing new, although the phenomenon may be growing with confidence. Women are over the responsibility of birth control, and the hormones that arrive alongside that may affect their lives. There is a bigger side effect than just hormones swapping from birth control to the pull out method. The heat of the moment may pull couples into making the snap decision to use this type of contraception. According to Planned Parenthood, of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, four will become pregnant each year if they always do it

Dr. Ajmani is the IWJ resident physician specializing is obstetrics and gynecology. She is board certified and has been in practice 16 years. She went to medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Phill PA and her did OB/Gyn residency at the UCSF-Fresno Program. She loves connecting with women and encourages patients to be their own advocates. Dr. Ajmani lives with her family in Boise. She can be reached at Saint Alphonsus 208-367-4224. Key Facts to Keep in Mind • The pull out method does not prevent sexually transmitted disease • It iss not 100% as a contraceptive method • Get checked for stds anytime you have a new partner, or if you’re concerned your partner has had other partners www.idahowomensjournal.com

correctly. If the man does not perform this method correctly, the four turns into a twenty-seven out of one hundred that are pregnant. In the end it comes down to selfcontrol, experience, and trust that this method will work effectively paired with emergency contraception to combat a possible surprise. In the heat of the passion it is sometimes nearly impossible to master self control, but at this point it looks like the generations to come will be discovering what works best for them and sticking to it. It won’t hurt to have a backup plan.

Other contraceptive options: IUD: interuterine device that are inserted into the uterus and it’s good for three, five, or ten years The pill: a hormonal method, a tablet taken daily (estrogen and progesterone hormones) The patch: an adhesive patch that you apply to your skin, and you change it once a week for three weeks. The fourth week you don’t wear a patch. (estrogen and progesterone) The ring: a round ring that is hollow in the middle that you insert yourself. It stays in for three weeks and is removed at the beginning of the fourth week. (estrogen and progesterone) Implant: It’s placed under the skin in the arm through an in-office procedure and lasts for three years. (progesterone only) Depo Provera: an injection received at the doctor’s office every three months www.idahowomensjournal.com

s a matter of fact, the human spine has 24 bones in an average spine – many people don’t realize that these vertebrae coordinate with functions of the body, and can also be connected to their health issues. The neck is made up of the seven smallest bones in the back called the Cervical spine or C-spine. The mid-back, being the largest section and second largest bones has 12 called the Thoracic Spine or T-spine. And five larger bones in the low back are called the Lumbar spine or L-Spine. These bones are there to protect the most important system in the body, the brain, and its nerve system. The nerve system is a highly complex organ system in the body, it tells the whole body how to work. This system is so important, it is the only system to be completely encased in and protected by bones. Each area of bone is there to protect the nerve system as it runs to its assigned portion of the body. Problems in this system can lead to not only pain but also other problems in the body. As an example, problems with bones in the neck can cause problems from the back of the head to the ear, pain in the trapezius muscle down to the arms and hands. Sometimes carpal tunnel can actually be caused by a bone in the neck disturbing the nerve telling the arm/hand how to work. Below are some of the most common problems in areas of the spine that affect other parts and functions of the body through its nerves.

Common Neck Problems C1& C2 (Nerves go from back of head to ear.) Headaches, ear infections C3 (Goes down the upper neck to lower neck in the trapezius muscle.) Neck pain C 4-C6 (Goes down trapezius muscle to upper back and down into arms and hands.) Carpel tunnel, shoulder pain Common Mid-back problems T5- T10 (The nerves that go to the stomach and intestines.) Digestive issues. T6-T9 (Goes to Gallbladder and liver.) Problems breaking down fat and detoxing. T8 &T9 (Goes to pancreas.) Diabetes negatively affects the pancreas. T10-L3 (Goes to the Colon.) Constipation. Common Low back problems L2 (Nerves go to the appendix, abdomen and upper leg.) Abdominal pain and leg issues. L3 (Goes to the bladder, uterus and knees.) Over active/under active bladder, heavy periods and knees. L4 (Goes to Prostate and Low back.) Low back pain and prostate enlargement. L5 (Goes to the Sciatic, lower leg, and feet.) Pain into legs and sciatica. If you suffer from any of these things, chiropractic could be right for you! Look into it and enjoy the other health benefits of having a fully functioning nerve system and back bone. July/August 2014 7

It Is Not Your Fault! by Judy Batten My Dear Friend, Right now in the United States 70 percent of us are overweight, half of that group is obese. Obesity-related diseases are robbing our health, stealing our energy, shortening our lives. It lowers our self esteem, makes us ashamed of our bodies, impairs our ability to experience life’s joys, and leads some of us to depression. My friend, I know you have tried so many times in the past to lose the weight and regain your health. I know how much you sacrificed, how hungry you were, the sweaty exhaustion you endured from too much exercise. Yes, it worked for a while. Then it stopped. I know you feel like a failure. Let me assure you, it is NOT your fault! You have fallen victim to the swarm of diet myths clouding our vision today such as:

Judy Batten is an experienced health coach for women and men who have lost 30 to 100 pounds. She struggled for years and finally lost 30 pounds using the products and methods she teaches. Judy offers free 20-minute consults to readers. She can be reached at HealthCoachJudy@yahoo.com. Check her out at www.HealthCoachJudy.tsfl.com

Myth 1: If I am not hungry, my diet isn’t working or I shouldn’t eat unless I am hungry Reality: Fuel your body every 2 to 3 hours with low calorie, nutrient dense food to keep your energy up, your mind sharp, and speed weight loss. I can help you with this! Myth 2: I don’t have enough will power to stick to it Reality: It is not about will-power, it is about skill-power! As your health coach I will help you develop the skills and understanding of your own body to make the right choices automatically. It will become second nature, not a sacrifice or a restriction. Myth 3: Exercise is more important than food for weight loss Reality: While exercise is vital to good health, 80 percent of weight loss comes from the kitchen, not the gym. Even a 30 minute daily walk has huge health benefits, but you can’t out run your fork! Myth 4: Weight loss comes in a bottle Reality: Sometimes we can lose a few pounds by confusing our bodies with drugs or other chemicals, but as soon as we stop, the weight comes right back with interest. It is so much better to give your body the right nutrition, in the right portions, at the right times, to be optimally healthy. I’d be happy to show you how! My beautiful friend, I am your health coach, your guide, your sounding board, your friend. I have been in your shoes. I am here to facilitate YOUR success! I am here, waiting for your call , when you are ready to talk. BFF, Judy

SPECIAL SECTION

April 16, 2014 On behalf of the people of the “City of Trees,” I’m proud to welcome you to the 2nd Annual Idaho Women’s Show, sponsored by the Idaho Women’s Journal. Boise is a great place for business women and their families. The reasons are all around us: the Boise River, one of the most beautiful urban streams in the nation; our diverse and attractive neighborhoods; a thriving arts and cultural community; and a healthy local economy that rewards innovation and supports businesses of every size. Boise has also developed a national reputation for recreation of all kinds, from hiking and mountain biking in the Foothills to winter skiing at Bogus Basin and water skiing at Lucky Peak – not to mention the Boise Color Run, “the happiest 5K on the planet.” No wonder that Outside magazine called Boise a “multi-sport mecca” and crowned us the best town in America. We also have the most important asset of all: creative, caring people working together to make Boise one of the most livable cities in the country. As mayor, I know well the valuable contributions that women in business make to our community. Here’s to a successful Idaho Women’s Show and an enjoyable Boise Color Run. Sincerely,

David H. Bieter Mayor
