You probably already knew that Girl Scouts provdes, fun, educational and enriching experiences for both participants and voluteers, but what you don’t know might surprise you! The Gem State Family Journal spoke with Maureen O’Toole, the CEO of Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council here in Idaho to find out just how beneficial Girl Scouts can really be.

Maureen O’Toole has not stopped since entering her role in May 2013. She is involving people, creating new concepts, and embracing community. Among the hours spent combing through information she was startled to realize the powerful and positive influence Girl Scouts has been. She organized some data and says, “Give me three years, and I can show you what Girls Scouts can do for a young woman.” So to put her to the test, we asked. Here are the results of her research:

Studies show structured environments can prevent high risk behaviors in youth. Girl Scouts Leadership Experience provides 15 positive outcomes. Non-college grads are five times more likely to be unemployed with Idaho finishing in the bottom 10 states for finishing four-year degrees. Girl Scouts are 81 percent more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree. Traffic fatalities and violent crimes are attributed to underage drinking. 90 percent of Girl Scouts will not participate in underage drinking. Idaho spends 60 million dollars to incarcerate and treat offenders with drug addition. 96 percent of Girl Scouts will never use drugs.
