The Oberkirch Magazine - Summer 2017

Our Summer Season List:

• Music Festivals In Our Region, Summer 2017 (pages 3-7) • 35th Zelt-Musik-Festival Freiburg, 5th - 23rd July 2017 (page 3) • 29th Colmar International Classic Music Festival, 5th-14th July 2017 (page 4) • 24th Stimmen ("voices")-Festival, Lörrach, 6th - 30th July 2017 (page 5)

Apart from the music festivals dominating the cultural life in our region as every summer we present to you some other events of cultural interest.

This year we are happy to introduce you to you more of those events than in any previous summer edition and we hope to make you feel like visiting Freibug this summer. In particular we would like to draw your attention to an article written by Hartmut Stiller from our partner Historix-Tours on pages 1012 of this magazine - basically a "do-ityourself city tour".

We hope you like our magazine and we are looking forward to seeing you again soon in the Oberkirch. We wish you a wonderful summer Doris Hunn

Events in Freiburg

The music festivals in and around Freiburg are the centre of the cultural life in our region during summer, of course. But there are several events of cultural interest beyond these music festivals.

42nd Rathaushofspiele From 21st July 2017 there will be the “Rathaushofspiele” - for the 42nd time in Freiburg. They will play. "The Black Rider", a musical by William S. Burroughs, Tom Waits and Robert Wilson, according to the press release a "now legendary Freischütz (marksmen) musical". If you buy your ticket early, you have the chance to buy an all-weatherticket, so you can enjoy the play even if it rains (then the location will be the Wallgraben-Theater, which only has half the seats available compared to the open air version) You can find more information at www.wallgraben-theater.com/stuecke/ freilichtspiele.html

Theater Freiburg The Freiburg Theatre will
continue its presentations until 25th July 2017 The programme includes the last performances of the opera "Crusades" by Ludger Vollmer, which is a debut performance as well as "Carmen" and "Unterwerfung" (Submission, based on the controversial novel by Michel Houellebecq) 8

Around Freiburg's Minster - by Hartmut Stiller (Historix-Tours) We are standing in front of the
Western tower of the Freiburg Minster
which is 116 meters high and even used to be the "highest tower in Germany"

Photo: Matthias Pohlmann

About Historix-Tours Historix-Tours®: Their love for their home town Freiburg, their love for
tourism as well as the firm belief in a new kind of city tours led to the
foundation of Historix-Tours in 1998. Inspired by the English tradition of "Ghostwalks", native Freiburg citizens Hartmut Stiller, M.A. and Dipl. chem Nicola Aly have been working ever since on a symbiosis of theatre, entertainment, drama and transfer of knowledge in order to present history and stories in an entertaining and thrilling way. Since the 3rd August 1998
Historix-Tours has been continuously offering guided city tours performed by actors on a daily basis, which is why in Germany they are considered to be the inventors of this type of regular commercial guided city tours.

Around

was a booming city and it was the
desire of the citizens as well as that of Duke Bertold V of Zähringen (who had the Minster built as his burial plot) to show off their wealth. But strictly speaking the Minster was nothing more than

The "Freiburg Cubit" on the cathedral's front

Being a ground-breaking
enterprise, Historx-Tours is consistently searching for new entertaining ways to present our city. "Freiburg is one of the most beautiful cities on earth, which we as globetrotters actually can assess. We are working to make our city even more attractive and worth living in".

upon completion around the year 1300. A very unusual fact, as during that period of time Freiburg had not been a bishop's see, it was as late as 1827 when the archbishop's see was changed from Konstanz to Freiburg. Since then, the "Minster" is a
"cathedral". While the Roman Catholic Church names it "cathedral" as you can see in "Cathedral Choir School" or "cathedral's office", Freiburg's citizens have continued to name "their" church "Minster".

Since 2012 Historix-Tours has been an official partner of the city of Freiburg.

The reason why the tower was built so high is that Freiburg used to be a very rich city around the year 1200. It

a simple church when completed. "And Freiburg will probably remain the most beautiful tower on earth", said art historian Jacob Burckhardt in 1869 during a lecture which is where the famous
phrase of "Christianity's most beautiful tower" originated. The open-worked spire is unique regarding its height: With a height of 45 meters it was the first and biggest spire in the Middle Ages and inspired many others such as Strasbourg, the St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna or the cathedrals of Cologne and Ulm. The master-builders of St. Lamberti in Münster/Westfalia even copied the whole tower during the 19th
 century.

Freiburg's Minster

(HISTORIX TOURS)

Around Freiburg's Minster,
Part 2: If you are standing in the entrance hall, used to hold Blutgericht ("bloodcourt") during the Middle Ages, you can discover many signs and symbols on the walls. For example, there is the "Freiburg Cubit" left of the entrance or outside left of the front gate the measurements for bread. If a baker offering his goods on the nearby market did not comply with the mandated measurements, one could check it there immediately. If a baker was caught multiple times being incorrect, often he was sentenced to "Schupfen": He would have been put in a cage, the cage would be put on some kind of see-saw. As entertainment for all bystanders the baker then would be plunged into a pool of excrements or a cesspool - a humiliating and unpleasant thing to do.

The Historic Merchants Hall is a typical case of that: While its front
featuring the emblematic "Habsburgred" now shows all its splendour towards the cathedral, originally it was the backyard facing in this direction while the front was towards the Schusterstrasse. From 1520-32 it was rebuilt in its current form. In the Merchants Hall, foreign merchants could offer and clear goods. The most important Habsburgian and Austrian sovereigns are shown on the front as Freiburg had been the cultural centre of Further
Austria for centuries, from 1651 onwards even as its capital. See Emperor Maximilian I, who visited Freiburg
several times on the left hand side as well as his son Philipp I ("the handsome") who visited Freiburg in 1496. While he was very well-liked in Freiburg, he died rather early in 1506 due to a flu.

Walking on the right side of the
cathedral you will enter the southern
cathedral place used today as the
market place, as a restaurant's terrace or just for relaxation. In the (distant) past however, people were not too keen to live at the cathedral place as there used to be the cemetery (mostly at the northern, but also the southern part) as well as the place of execution. While the gallows were situated outside of the city, the market place was also used during times, when they were not easily accessible. So understandably houses used to be oriented off the Minster and the backyards towards the church.

His (already during his lifetime) very jealous wife Johanna apparently went insane afterwards as she ordered not to bury him with other dead people, especially not with females. She ordered to keep his dead body laid out in her bedroom for many years, so she could keep an eye on him! Therefore it does not come as a surprise that she is
remembered as "Johanna the insane" in history books. However, two of her sons became famous emperors and are shown on the Historic Merchants Hall's front, too: Emperor Charles V (second from the right) and Emperor Ferdinand I (right).

The Oberkirch Magazine - Summer 2017

However, there still is a lot of construction going on on the edges of Freiburg's inner city. While the "Platz der Alten Synagoge" (Old Synagogue's Square) now is visibly taking shape every day, the "Neugestaltung des Siegesdenkmals" (rearrangement of the Victory Monument's Square) now is the most prominent construction site. Due to these constructions the tram lines leading north are suspended between Bertoldsbrunnen and Siegesdenkmal for the time being. For the Winter Season - just in time for the Christmas Market - construction between Bertoldsbrunnen and Siegesdenkmal will be finished. But as the tram line will resume its services at a later date, the shops
adjacent to the Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse will be allowed to use the boulevard in order to offer a very special shopping experience. For now there are no details
published yet - but for sure it will be even more worthwhile than usual to visit Freiburg this winter - we will keep you informed!

Around Freiburg's Minster,
Part 3: Going further to the choir of the cathedral you can see "messages from the afterworld" vis-à-vis of the "Alte Wache" (built in 1733): "graffiti"

I have left, so I want to be married as you are". The legend does not disclose whether or not she found a suitor. On the northern cathedral square you can see the contours of the former St.-Andreas-Chapel, which used to be

AROUND FREIBURG'S MINSTER

made by young sentries who
scratched their names, year dates, sometimes even sketches of weapons (a canon for example) and crests in the front. Hopefully these "graffitis" will be preserved when the choir will be renovated in the future. Walking around the Minster, look out for a very special waterspout: it's an old nun pointing her finger towards her mouth. Legend tells that during Protestant Reformation nuns in monasteries were told that they were permitted to marry as long as they still had at least one tooth left. So a very old nun then had presented herself to the shocked citizens, pointing to her very last tooth and saying "One tooth

the bone house of the cemetery during the Middle Agey. An arch with skeletons aged at least 500 years is still preserved below ground. As late as 2016 there were more bones added - found during the
construction of a new cellar next to the Minster. So the old cemetery is far from being vanished, even if you might forget about it due to the busy market above. The Historix-Mystery-Trail The Historix-Mystery-Trail: Historix-Tours now offers a totally new combination of thrilling town
history and fiddly riddles. How do you explain something
entirely new? As "escape-room to-go"? As "treasure-hunt with history"? As a city tour featuring riddles but not a
guide? Let's try it this way: Upon
arriving at the meeting point with your group you will receive a "mysterious bag". After that, the group is on its own… but what is in the bag? How can the content be revealed? Where is the treasure hidden? These questions will accompany you all through the inner city while you will learn a lot of thrilling facts about Freiburg's history. A group of up to 10 persons will have to search, rack your brain and think outside the box in order to bring the group one step forward. The goal is to follow a mysterious map and so to find the treasure. On your way you will walk through the atmospheric inner city, through
 narrow alleys, across the famous
"Bächle" and past the most important places of interest in Freiburg - all of which are presented with fascinating texts (to read/read out).

The result will be a new, playful and thrilling form of a "guided city tour" (without a guide, however), which will culminate in finding the "treasure". The "Historix-Mystery-Trail" is
suitable for people aged 12 and above and there is no previous knowledge required. There are different versions for children/adolescents or adults available. An english version is in
preparation, however as long as there are people in your group capable to translate, you still will be able to enjoy the German version. There are different kinds of riddles to be solved, so within a group different skills are required. There are no
 knowledge-checks, everything is
unlocked logically on-site while you are learning a lot about the thrilling history of Freiburg. So the Historix-Mystery-Trail is for example a perfect fit for: friends,
companies, teams, families, youth groups, sports clubs, school classes… as a birthday party, company event,
excursion, supporting programme for symposia and a lot more.

About the Mystery-Trail: Age: 12 - 99 (different versions for children/adolescents/adults available) For groups of: 2-10 persons Your group is bigger? No
problem, it is possible to do several mystery-trails simultaneously - the teams starting 5-10 minutes after each other. Price: 95 Euros per group of 10 people (including "treasure")
Or 80 Euros per group, if you are providing your own "treasure", which you then should hand over "inconspicuously" to your contact person. Happy Hour: Wednesdays,
starting time between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.: 75 Euros including treasure (or 60 Euros if you provide your own
treasure) Bigger groups require several mystery-trails. The price then depends on the number of mystery-trails. Start: "Am Schwabentor" (inner face, at the staircase "Schwabentorsteg") Duration: ca. 2 - 2,5 hrs.

Find more information at
 www.mystery-trail.de.

Route: ca. 2 kilometers

The Oberkirch Magazine - Summer 2017

Autumn And Winter In The Oberkirch:

• Book your stay in November now: Until the end of the summer break you can book your Economy rooms for November at a very attractive rate: Single rooms from €79,40, double rooms from €104,40. Please note however that Economy rooms are only available when booking over the internet, they are to be paid in advance and there is no refund (not even a partial one) in case of cancellation or no-show. • Congresses in autumn: The high season of congresses and annual meetings in Freiburg starts from mid-September. So please book your stay in autumn early as several dates in September are already fully booked. • Every year again: Christmas and the weekends leading to it - they come round faster than expected. And sadly we have to tell even to our dear regular guests looking for a room on a weekend in late November/early December that we are fully booked already. Even for that period of the year we cannot suddenly invent new rooms. From late September/early October it usually gets difficult to comply with special room requests and after that we usually are fully booked quickly. As the fourth advent this year will be on Christmas Eve, the demand for rooms is focused on the first three weekends. This is why we recommend booking very soon in case you are thinking about spending one weekend during that time in Freiburg. We would also like to kindly ask for your understanding that we cannot
accept single-night bookings for those weekends - due to the high demand for overnight stays spanning two nights We hope you have enjoyed reading our magazine as much as we enjoyed creating it. Feel free to visit our website - you will find more news there..

Best regards
 Your OberkirchTeam
