Oberkirch News

We are committed to giving you the best experience possible in our hotel - but we need your help in order to do so. So we kindly ask you to write us what you like the most about our hotel - and of
course what you are missing. Should there be enough feedback we certainly will write about it in the "news" section of our website. And there are prizes to win, of course. How much there will be to win depends on how much feedback we will receive: We will raffle off one free overnight per 100 messages providing feedback or part thereof we will
receive. The draw will probably take place in January 2018 - however, we are reserving the right to postpone the draw until March 2018 in case there is still feedback incoming during January. We are keen to learn about your ideas and your feedback, please write us to oberkirch2.0@hotel-oberkirch.de (Only feedback sent to this email address will take part in the draw)

New challenges as Freiburg changes The huge construction site extending Freiburgs inner city and creating a new tram line for Freiburg has grown even bigger during the last months. Soon the Northern and Western entries to the inner city will look completely different. At the same time, many new hotels are opening in Freiburg - two new big hotels have opened already, two more are about to open until mid-September. These changes are binding manpower in a small individual hotel as the Oberkirch. We are happy that we do not detect a decline in demand for our rooms in our hotel - however,
according to what we are reading in our in-house guest surveys, we believe we are detecting a gradual change regarding the needs of our guests. We will never be able to compete with the new hotels offering 100 or more rooms on price as hotels of that size are having a different structure of costs - by no means comparable to a small and individual hotel such as the Oberkirch, offering 26 rooms in two different
buildings. Our strength is and always will be individuality - including the possibility to talk directly to our guests and our friends in order to fulfill their wishes to the furthest possible extent which is only feasible in a hotel like ours. But we have to consistently question and reposition ourselves as needs and wishes are always changing gradually - of course we don't want to do that without hearing from you. Our objective is to give you (even) more satisfaction during your next stay - and we are counting on you for telling us what you wish (the most) from us (see article on the left).

We would like to hear
 your opinion!

Autumn 2017

IN THE OBERKIRCH Harvest Festival Week 2017:

Autumnal colours are all over the Oberkirch - get fascinated by this wonderful ambiance. Visit us and enjoy a delicious Harvest Festival Menu - as all our menus made of fresh ingredients - from 25th to 30th September 2017.

Our game menu: Autumn season - game season. That is the case this year again, of course - and certainly at the Oberkirch.

Feuerzangenbowle 2017: A drink not only famous for being featured in the 1944 film comedy with German superstar Heinz Rühmann is called Feuerzangenbowle. It is a German alcoholic drink with a long tradition for which a sugarloaf (soaked in rum) is set on fire and drips into mulled wine. Enjoy this extraordinary experience combined with a three-course menu in our
“Jägerstüble” (snuggery) - so you are prepared for “the hit of the party” -
our Feuerzangenbowle. When lights are dimmed the true magic will be unfolded - which is the reason why this age long tradition never gets outdated. You can reserve this wonderful evening for a group of at least six persons from
November 2017 on throughout all the winter season - but it is only available on advance reservation as our “Jägerstüble” needs to be available, of course. Please ask us for the price and for the possibility to have a different number of
 participants.

Our kitchen crew created
mouth-watering game delicacies for you featuring again our classic ‘Oberkirchs Wildplatte’ (our game plate for two), of course. As in previous years our menu will also include the chateaubriand steak and our legendary parfait of fir honey. But we will enchant you with new
dishes, too. Let our kitchen crew surprise you!

Just call us - we organise everything else.

Reserve for your company party now:

We are looking forward to welcoming you - not only during game season 2017.

Let our kitchen crew surprise and enchant you! We are happy to receive the reservation for your company party now - no matter whether you want to duly finish your year or whether you want to start the new year in January with a successful party. Stay tuned - we are preparing something special for company parties during
November or January. We are looking forward to your reservation as well as to your visit.

November-Tips

Insiders' tip: An extraordinary shopping
experience awaits you in Freiburg this winter! As we already have announced in the summer edition of our magazine, Freiburg's retailers are preparing special events during late autumn and early winter celebrating the end of construction for the
Kaiser-Joseph-Straße. Two events are already fixed: the traditional "Mega Saturday" will take place on 7th October 2017 in the then nearly completed Kaiser-Joseph-Straße and all the inner city. Many shops will stay open until
midnight and will offer a lot of different promotions. 30th

On Monday October 2017 there will be a "Pedestrian Zone Food Truck
Festival" in the Kaiser-Joseph-Straße and the stores will stay open until 10 p.m. That is when retailers are celebrating the actual completion of our main shopping street. There will also be stages on the street as the tram line will not resume its service before December. Please note that the 31st
October 2017 will be a holiday this year
 (celebrating 500 years of Protestant
Reformation) - as always the 1st November will be a holiday, too. During November there will be more events which will probably be presented during September - we will keep you posted on our website - stay tuned!

27th Varieté am Seepark, 2nd - 12th November 2017 Magicians, acrobats, jugglers, comedians and a lot more are on offer during the ”Varieté am Seepark”, a true enrichment to Freiburg’s cultural life - in 2017 for the 27th time already. Enjoy a programme themed “When miraculous forces are taking effect” and experience in 2017 great artistry once again. This year the evenings will be hosted by entertainer Matthias Brodowy, the Duo Man's World will perform partner acrobatics. Barto will introduce you to "Klischnigg" while Anna Shala will amaze you with her hula hoops and Anastasyia, being a snake woman, will
perform astonishing tricks. You can also expect acrobatics from Trio D.A.S. - as always directed by Udo Püschel. (No performances on 6th and 7th November 2017,
private events on 2nd and 8th November at 8 p.m.)

Plaza Culinaria, 10th - 12th November 2017 Plaza Culinaria is the most important fair of its kind in Southern Germany and turns
Freiburg’s exhibition halls year after year into a gourmet heaven. Various attractions are on offer: Starting with the “culinary studio”, where gourmet chefs will talk about their secrets. There also is a stage designated to encourage exchange between
exhibitors and visitors. Amongst others there also is “Hall 2”, planned as an “oasis of calm” and the “Smoker’s Lounge”, which is even popular with non-smokers as they show and teach how cigars are made.

79th Night Jumble Sale Freiburg, 25th November 2017 Amongst the Jumble Sales in Freiburg those which take place during the night (well, until 10 p.m.) are considered to be a special highlight. More than 200 sellers will be there offering anything from antiques to toys, from electronics to household goods and some students selling clothes. fudder.de says: “We promise: if you are not intimidated by the huge amount of goods, you will (almost) always be rewarded with a lucky finding”.

Winetastings, Staatsweingut Freiburg, 18th and 30th November 2017 On 18th November 2017 there will be the autumnal winetasting where you will be free to choose the wines according to your taste. This evening will feature delicacies from Freiburg’s leading butcher Müller-Herkommer. At an extra charge, you will also be able to book a tasting of rare wines including specialities from the appellations Blankenhornsberger Doktorgarten and Freiburger Schloßberg, senior vintages and dessert wines. . On 30th November 2017 the Staasweingut Freiburg will offer you a Culinary Winetasting. Starting with a champagne reception, followed by a guided tour through the vineyard and completed by a winetasting with a Vesperteller (regional snack plate) - five different wines will be on offer.

Insiders' tip: ORSO Rock-Symphony Night 2017
 ORSO - the Rock Symphony
 Orchestra calling themselves "world's
biggest band" will perform in the
Konzerthaus Freiburg: Their exciting mixture of rock, pop and symphonic music of the 19th and 20th
century as well as film music and opera pieces, musical melodies, jazz and soul already resulted in ecstasy in their public in previous years. In 2017 ORSO will come back to the Konzerthaus Freiburg after two years, when their schedule with guest performances for example in Titisee and Ötigheim did not allow to visit our city. . Apart from their greatest successes from previous years there will be new
 arrangements and a top-class star
ensemble on stage. Look forward to hearing spectacular music by legends such as Led Zeppelin, Queen, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, David Bowie and many others - specifically arranged for ORSO. The concert will take place on
Saturday, 28th October 2017 in the

Insiders' tip: French Chanson's Rising Star:
Claudio Capéo Claudio Capéo's two albums published in 2010 and 2012 did not find a huge public. So in 2015 he decided to take part in the French version of "The Voice" and although being eliminated during the
"battles" already he must have left a lasting impression with many of the 7.5 million, who watched the show: His album published after the show is certified four times
platinum - not least thanks to a memorable performance during the television broadcast of the "Fête de la Musique" in 2016. His album earned him a nomination for the "Victoires de la Musique", the French Grammy Awards and in 2016 as well as in 2017 the 10,000 available tickets for his concerts during the "Foire aux Vins" in Colmar were sold out in no time. On 10th February 2018 he will perform in Strasbourg and we recommend strongly to reserve your tickets as soon as possible because of his popularity in general - but also because concerts in Alsace for him are a "home match". His musical style might best be described as a modern while still classical form of French Chanson - those who want to learn more about his music can find an example at

Exhibitions

Insiders' tip:

Exhibitions In Freiburg, Autumn/ Winter 2017:

from Sunday, September 2017:
 Art in the Faulerstraße
and in the sunbathing area 17th

Soon after the last sun beds are folded up and after the towels are wrapped up, the sunbathing area of the Faulerbad transforms into an area of culture. Near the feeder to the A5 Autobahn and only a few steps from the vivid inner city of Freiburg you will find inspiration after 17th September 2017. Jörg Siegele, Sabine Felder, Leonie von Roten, Konrad Wallmeier, Maria Christina Tangorra, Katja Wüstenhube, Bernd Goering, Sandra Simone Schmidt,
Reinhard Klessinger and many other sculptors will present their works and will divert you from your routine. Leave your daily routine and let artists transport you away - maybe even during the opening vernissage on 17th September 2017 from 5 p.m.

The exhibition will be open to the public until Sunday, 26th May 2018.

• from Saturday, 14th Oktober 2017: In Good Times And Bad
What is today's purpose of a museum? What do we expect from a museum? What are its duties? The Exhibition "In Good Times And bad" questions the role of a
museum as an "art company" with its permanently changing special exhibitions and focuses on its actual cultural capital: its own collection. The Museum of Modern Art takes works of its own collection as a starting point for an enduring extension of its
collection. (Museum of Modern Art, until Sunday, 15th April 2018) • from Saturday, 28th Oktober 2017: Rembrandt.
Power and Powerlessness of the Body. 100 Etchings
Passion and pain, power and impotence: like no other artist, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606 – 1669) devoted himself in his work to the human body. He observed people with a watchful keen eye. Rembrandt did not sugar-coat reality, but depicted what he saw. The selection of 100 print graphics for this exhibition gives an insight into the realism of this great Dutch artist. Rembrandt’s images tell of the vitality and the transience of everything that is human, of man rebelling against his physical limitations and his capitulation to his desires – and to death.
(Haus der Graphischen Sammlung “House of the Graphical Collection“,
until Sunday, 28th Januar 2018) • from Saturday, 25th November 2017: In the Laboratory of modernity –
 Hölzel and his circle
In September 2016 Freiburg made a part of art history with a notable exhibition: Adolf Hölzel (1853-1934) - one of the founding fathers of modern art in Germany and his followers had an exhibition in the then newly built "Freiburger Kunstverein". The so-called "Hölzel circle" then appeared before the public for the first time.
The exhibition "In the Laboratory of modernity – Hölzel and his circle" will focus once again on this adventurous painter, art theoretician and educator as well as on his highly talented students and followers.
(Augustinermuseum, until Sunday, 15th January 2018) • Permanent Exhibition: Iron - Power - Wealth. Celts at the Southern Upper Rhine
Finds of international significance are the focus of the newly arranged exhibition on the Iron Age in South Baden.
Quite outstanding is the oldest glass bowl north of the Alps from Ihringen am Kaiserstuhl. The walk-in burial chamber from Kappel on the Rhine enables visitors to timetravel to a bygone era 2,500 years ago.

Christmas Markets

Freiburg Christmas Market, 27th November to 23rd December 2017 Insiders' tip: Weihnachtsmarkt Basel,
 rd 23 November to 23rd December 2017

Opening times: Weekdays from 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. - Sundays from 11.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. As you stroll through the tempting aromas of the Freiburg Christmas Market, with over 100 stalls offering a wide range of goods made by local producers, you will discover that there is something for everyone. Ideally you combine your visit to the Freiburg Christmas Market with our package AdventMagic (see page 18).

Considered to be one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Switzerland Strasbourg Christmas Market, 24th November bis 24th December 2017 (and surely the largest there), this market takes place every day from 11 a.m.
Founded in 1570, the now world-famous Strasbourg Christmas Market runs this year only to 8 p.m. at the “Barfüsserplatz” and the until Christmas Eve. Once again Strasbourg’s inner city will be transformed into an impressive “Münsterplatz” (cathedral square) in Basle. sea of lights. Just next to the city’s landmark, the “Barfüsser church” there will be a
gorgeous Christmas tree, decorated by famous Christmas expert Johann
Wanner. During the pre-Christmas period there will also take place some special
exhibitions and many more events in Basle . The official opening of the Basle Christmas market will take place on
23rd November 2017 at 6.30 p.m. at the cathedral square in Basel. By the way, you can reach Basle perfectly from Freiburg - twice per hour there are trains leaving the main station to
 Switzerland.

22

Technically, the Strasbourg market is not just one single market but an amalgamation of several different Christmas markets, each with a different speciality and around 300 stalls in total. Each year one country is featured as the seasonal “Guest of Honour” - the invited country for 2017 is not published yet. . Right in Strasbourg’s historic heart (Gutenberg square) there will be everything themed according to their "Guests of Honour". The market is open every day from 10 a.m. (closing times vary). In 2014 and 2015 the Strasbourg Christmas market was voted as “Europe’s best Christmas market” twice in a row. Parts of the market (around the cathedral) might stay open until New Year's Eve, but that is yet to be determined.

Mulhouse Christmas Market, probabl. end of November to 23rd December 2017 You can get to the Mulhouse Christmas market easy by taking the S-Bahn (regional train) from Freiburg. On arrival in Mulhouse, the uniquely decorative textile Christmas bedecking on display as well as the offered goods are a fine example of why Mulhouse is known as “Stadt des Stoffdruckes” (the capital of textile printing). Besides the main market on “Place de la Réunion”, there are several smaller markets in the museums and in the nearby public squares. The market opens at 10 a.m.
 (closing times vary).

Christmas Markets

IN OUR REGION Colmar Christmas Market, 24th November to 31st December 2017

Photo: Stadt Sélestat

...SummerJam Insiders' tip:

Daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., late opening Fridays and Saturdays until 9 p.m., reduced opening times during Christmas.

Get stress-free to the
 Christmas Markets in Alsace

The main market in Colmar is to be found at “Place des Dominicains”. But there are also several other Christmas markets in Colmar, such as the Children’s Christmas market in “La Petite Venise” (Little Venice), the Christmas market in the old “Kaufhaus”-square, the arts and crafts market in the“Koïfhus” or the Alsace market which can be found at “Place Jeanne d’Arc”.

Kaysersberg, Riquewihr,
Ribeauvillé and Eguisheim - all these villages will have wonderful
 Christmas Markets on offer.

Although Colmar itself is three times smaller than Freiburg, all these markets put together are even bigger than the market in Freiburg.

There will be no need to ask for directions nor will you encounter any trouble searching for a parking spot as the villages in Alsace will offer you a special deal:

Obernai Christmas Market, 25th November to 31st December 2017 The Christmas Market in Obernai is considered by many to be an insiders' tip. Located about 25km southwest of Strasbourg this market focusses on gastronomy and handcraft. The village of Obernai counts 10,000 inhabitants and its Christmas Market has (as usual in France) great illuminations on offer - every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Saturdays until 8 p.m.). On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the market closes at 2 p.m. and on Christmas Day it stays closed. By the way, Obernai is also the place where the famous
 Alsatian beer Kronenbourg is made.

Gengenbach Christmas Market, 30th November to 23rd December 2017 This relatively new Christmas market welcomes around 150,000 visitors every year. In a special event the 24 windows of the Gengenbach Rathaus (town hall) will become the world’s largest Advent calendar. The images on display in the windows are all by well-loved artists this year the windows will feature works of Andy Warhol. You will be able to see the Warhol-windows until 6th January 2018.

Altkirch Magic Forest, 2nd December 2017 to 1st January 2018 About 30km east of Basel a truly magic forest awaits you. In the centre of the city you will find reconstructed lakes and forests and about 200 figures from 26 fairy tales such as The Cabbage Fairy or The Fire Dragon. There are listening points and brochures in German and in French available, we don’t have any information about availability in English. The Magic Forest is admission free and open daily until 11 pm.

Triberger Weihnachtszauber (Triberg Christmas Magic),
 25th to 30rd December 2017

During the weeks leading up to
Christmas there will be a shuttle bus bringing you to Eguisheim - every weekend there will be a bus to all of the villages mentioned above. These buses will be hopon-hop-off buses, so you will have to pay only €8 per person and you will be able to get to all those Christmas Markets (children under 12 are free). On weekends the shuttle buses to
Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé will depart from Colmar every 30 minutes between 9.30 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. Buses to Eguisheim will leave on weekdays every 2 hours, on weekends every hour from Colmar. You can find out more details at
 www.navettedenoel.fr.

One million lights and a huge show made of fire five times a day - amongst other things this is what awaits you in Triberg starting Christmas. Around the world-famous waterfall you will experience a winter’s tale that is not to be missed!

Winter 2017/18 In The Oberkirch: • Every year again: Christmas and the weekends leading to it - they come round faster than expected. And sadly we have to tell even to our dear regular guests looking for a room on a weekend in late November/early December that we are fully booked
already. Even for that period of the year we cannot suddenly invent new rooms.
Late September/early October it usually gets difficult to comply with special room requests and after that we usually are fully booked quickly. This is why we recommend
booking very soon in case you are thinking about spending one weekend during that time in Freiburg especially as due to the fact that this year the 4th Advent will be on Christmas Eve, demand is even higher for the first three weekends in December. We would also like to kindly for your understanding that we cannot accept bookings for single nights only for those weekends - due to the high demand for overnight stays spanning two nights. • Restaurant closed for Christmas Eve: As every year our restaurant will be closed on Christmas Eve. • Closed for New Year’s Eve: From 31st December 2017 to 1st January 2018 our hotel and our restaurant will both be closed. From 2nd January 2018 we will be back for you. • Annual closing of our restaurant in 2018: From 13th February until
22nd February 2018 (both dates included) our restaurant will be closed for our annual closing. During this time we sadly cannot offer you our sumptuous breakfast buffet, our room rates for that period of time do not include breakfast. However, we will offer you a small breakfast in our hotel lobby (at an extra charge of €5,50 per person).

Dear friends of the Oberkirch, we will now change from four issues per year of "The Oberkirch Magazine" to three not least for the new challenges in Freiburg that are absorbing manpower and we hope you have enjoyed reading our magazine as much as we enjoyed creating it. Feel free to visit our website - you will find more news there.

Best regards
 Your OberkirchTeam 24
