ROB PINES burst into calculations as a genuine National Sprint Series contender with a brilliant win over Rewind in the Division 1 Final of the J G Nelson series in Launceston on Monday night. Rob Pines went into the final on the back of an impressive heat win, but his victory over arguably Tasmania’s best sprinter was a career best effort. Rewind began well from box eight and was on the back of the leader, Hellyeah Stella when they swept out of the first turn. Rob Pines was only fairly away from box three and was midfield approaching the first turn, desperately in need of racing room.

Tassie Peter Staples The Ted Medhurst trained dog punched his way through to fourth heading down the back stretch, while Rewind was checking off the heels of the leader as they approached the bottom turn. Rewind gained the upper hand turning for home before Rob Pines angled for

a rails run and pushed the leader out of his way to make ground. Rob Pines (Bombastic Shiraz - Velocity Thunder) hugged the rail in the home straight and grabbed Rewind in the closing stages to score by a half length. It was Rob Pines’11th win from 29 starts in Tasmania and he also has amassed 11 minor placings, making him one of the most consistent in the state and definitely are worthy nominations for the National Sprint Series. Rob Pines covered the 515 metres trip in 29.78, which was an outstanding run, given where he was positioned midrace.

Olwyn’s winning ways

LEADING TRAINER, Ted Medhurst celebrated his 80th winner for the season when his promising bitch, Olwyn scored an effortless victory in the Division 3 Final of the J G Nelson Cup over 515 metres in Launceston on Monday night. Olwyn had to contend with wearing the yellow vest, but she made light work of the task by beginning well, and had the field on her heels as she hugged the rail at the first turn. Once on the bunny, she sped clear and maintained a three lengths break over Night Train, who tried hard throughout in 29.99, with Hellyeah Sam almost a length away third. It was Olwyn’s third win from as many outings on the Launceston circuit, for what was only her fourth start since arriving from Victoria last month. The Bombastic Shiraz and Pipe Dreams bitch, owned by the Original Syndicate, had 14 starts in Victoria for wins at Shepparton and Sandown before being despatched to Tasmania. Night Train produced another honest effort and took his place tally to 10 from 23 starts, but he also has won five times to stake earnings in excess of $10,000. Hellyeah Sam was making good ground at the business end of proceed-

ings, while Jomad, who was attempting to make it four wins on end, lost all chance when he was checked soon after the start and again when making a run down the back stretch.

Deverell rapt

BUTCH DEVERELL was only too pleased when owners Karlene Cuthbertson and Sally-Ann Wilson offered him a pup to train that had been rejected by another trainer. Pak And Wrap is one of an exciting Where’s Pedro - Smart And Sassy litter bred by Cuthbertson and Wilson that includes multiple winners, Millie Minor and Mollie's Legacy, who are prepared by Mick Stringer. Pak And Wrap had not shown the potential of his slicker siblings but he has matured quickly with racing and capped his stellar rise with a powerful win in the J. G. Nelson Division 3 Final over 515 metres on Monday night. Pak And Wrap began well from box one to vie for the lead heading to the first turn. He was headed by Cosmic Lie but quickly booted up to hold off that challenge and then he shrugged-off a determined bid from Sandy Pines all the way down the back stretch. Once balanced for the run home he sped clear and went on to score comfortably from Sandy Pines. with Amadeus Wolf a closing third. just in advance of Cheetah Zorro. Pak And Wrap went into the J G Nelson series on the back of a win in a heat of the Hobart Club’ Breeders Classic series and followed that with a game third in the final, clocking 30.24.

Tassie’s best

THERE were no surprises when the nominations for this year’s State Heats of the National Sprint and Distance Championships were released this week.

All of the proven sprint stars were there, including Emerald Lee, Rewind, Bergermeister, Decembrist, Penny's Angel, New Recruit, Rob Pines and Lika Whisper. A couple of the Island State’s most promising youngsters also have been nominated, with recent HGRC Breeders Classic winner, Zorro’s Legacy and Millie Grace, not surprising entries. The exciting Gatty Com from the Brendan Pursell kennel is also amongst the nominations. There are enough entries to run either five or six heats if all sprint nominations accept. The Distance series has attracted 17 entries, which is enough to run two heats, with litter siblings Jethro, Beaudine and Bell Haven the early favourites to represent the state in the National Grand Final. The Hobart club will host the National Sprint and Distance Championships this year with the sprint to be run over 461 metres and the distance over 709 metres on August 25. Nominations for the National Sprint: Able Lad, Bane, Bearville Phil, Bergermeister, Black Nitro, Bluffy Lad, Brighton Bullet, Cassomac Levi, Centennial Bark, Clyde;s Angel, Decembrist, Decibel, Emerald Lee, Franklin Bluboy, Galtee Again, Gatty Com, I’m A Fencer, Irinka Julie, Just Sioux Me, Katsidis, Let’s Do This, Lika Whisper, Lucky Norris, Magic Moss, Matt Black, Millie Grace, New Recruit, November Digger, Penny’s Angel, Pippi's Gold, Portrait Ignites, Pretty In Blue, Pretty Pearl, Ready To Rock, Rewind, Rob Pines, Shanlyn Poh, Sir Sonic, Sofia Elise, Speed Direct, Wynburn Diamond, Zavance Man, Zorro’s Legacy Distance Series: Back Page Lead, Baretta Bee, Beaudine, Bell Haven, Collyn Tiger, Decembrist, Greysynd Merry, Harry’s Pick, Jethro, Ming Dynasty, Miss Vixen, Paper Trail, Posh Poppy, Posh Will, Proven Lotus, Tadmore Dunoon, Wynburn Jet

NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

Barcia Bale is the hottest young sprinter in Australia. He continued his unbeaten run with an explosive turn of mid-race pace to post his ninth straight win. Missing the start, he quickly balanced-up and set out after Ima Geisha Girl, who had began brilliantly and recorded a sizzling first split of 4.99. Then in the twinkling of an eye, this outstanding sprint prospect stormed past the leader and hit the back straight sectional mark in 17.60. From thereon it was a precession, with the Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale youngster hitting the line in 29.84.

IF IRMA BALE can win Saturday night’s Final of the Group 3 AWM Distance Championship over 725 metres at The Meadows, the $40,000 first prizemoney will take her past $250,000 in earnings. In a heat at her first start at the trip,

Irma Bale with Robert Camelleri after the brilliant front runner notched her first win over The Meadows 725 metres staying trip in 42.84.

and after sitting second early, she turned the power on from mid-race to run out a seven lengths winner in Best Of Night 42.84. A winner of 22 of her 43 starts, it was the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale’s first distance race for a month, as her previous effort was a third in the Superstayers at Albion Park. From box two here, the Graeme Bate trained stayer gets a great chance to annex her third Group victory to sit alongside her Group 1 Sandown Cup and Group 2 McKenna Memorial. And by winning this, it could possibly rocket her to favouritism for the upcoming National Distance Championship. Her litter sister, Fyna Bale, drawn box three, might just be one of her dangers, as she races extremely well on the track. In a heat she led before being run down to finish a slightly disappointing fourth, albeit she was beaten only three and a half lengths, but it was her first unplaced effort at the trip. Prior to that, the Andrea Dailly trained half-miler had scored twice with a second from her three starts and goes into the race with the fastest PB of 42.73.

NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

IT’S HARD to envisage any other greyhound beating the three in-form chasers in the Hudson Pacific Maturity Classic over 525 metres at The Meadows on Saturday night. The trio I’m tipping to snare the trifecta are Desalle Bale, who’s done nothing wrong, nor has her litter sister, Barcia Bale, unbeaten in nine appearances, and Ima Geisha Girl, who’s been runner-up to Barcia Bale twice in this series. Trained by Jason Thompson, Ima Geisha Girl has won three times at the Broadmeadows raceway, clocking

She’s an on-pace runner who may just serve it up to her sister from the outset, which could turn this into a very interesting contest between the siblings. Andrea Dailly also qualified with the highly talented Lektra Jay, and although he’s been placed at all three runs at the trip, he’s still winless following his heat third to Arising. However, the son of Where’s Pedro and Electra is a star over both the 525 metres and the 600 metres on the track. He was runner-up in the Group 1 Perth Cup, on Group 2 Rookie Rebel on this track and made the final of the Group 1 Sandown Cup. As honest as the day is long, the white and black chaser gives his all in his races, so expect to see his green vest on the podium at race’s end. It’s hard not to be impressed with what Arising has done thus far, and his career stats of 10 wins in 19 starts are testimony to that. In a heat, at his first start at the trip, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Pure Elle came from off the speed to get home best and score in 42.93. Trained by Janet Cottrell, the black

29.85, 29.86 and 29.96, so the Wheeler/Bate duo would certainly have be at their very best to score. Last week’s heat second to Barcia Bale in a semi-final was in a hot 29.84, whilst the week prior the same chaser beat her in 29.90. Based on that, you’d say that Barcia Bale has Ima Geisha Girl’s measure, and drawing box five in the final will make her job a lot tougher. Still, the Reg Kay owned daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Elite Oriental should give a good account and is a definite each-way chance.

galloper is just out of restricted company, so this is his hardest test to date. But from out in the seven he’ll get the chance to settle off the speed early and should be doing his best work at the business end of proceedings. He Knows Uno is one of Australia’s best greyhounds, having won Group 1 races as both a sprinter and a stayer. Trained in northern NSW by Mick Patterson, the son of Primo Uno and Honeymoon’s Over finished third in a heat, beaten eight and a half lengths by Irma Bale. A winner of 29 of his 65 starts, he usually gets off the speed and finishes powerfully, so his draw of five probably means little to him. His efforts at The Meadows have resulted in fifths in the Group 1 Temlee and Group 1 TOPGUN and fourth in the Group 2 Zoom Top, so this is easier by those standards, but he still has to go better than he did in the heat. SELECTIONS 2 IRMA BALE 3 Fyna Bale 6 Lektra Jay 7 Arising - Darryl Embling

Desalle Bale couldn’t have been more impressive than last weekend when she held out a strong finish from Odie For Now to land a semifinal in 30.05. The daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale ran slick splits of 5.00 and 17.70 to remain unbeaten at The Meadows, and after coming up with the rails alley, it’s hard to see her anywhere else but in the lead early on. Odie For Now has stacks of talent, and box eight in the final won’t necessarily be a drawback for the Kel Greenough trained racer. Having said that, there’s stacks of early pace in the race, so getting across quickly to be somewhere near the rail might pose a few headaches for the You Can Do It Syndicate’s greyhound. How many more superlatives can you find to describe Barcia Bale? And I reckon we’ll have to keep searching the dictionary, as she’ll sport the white singlet in the Group 1 final. In a nutshell, Barcia Bale only has to beat her sister to annex this year’s Maturity, and after 10 consecutive victories from as many starts, she’ll have over $127,000 in the bank. Of the others, Hannie Bale has to stay in the mix. Trained by ‘Team Dailly’, her asset is her early pace, but after drawing the seven alley, it’s a daunting task, as her 30.31 semi-final success was hardly fast enough to trouble the other Wheeler greyhounds. CONGRATULATIONS are in order for those who made last Saturday’s exceptional race meeting possible. There was something for the stayers, with two fabulous heats of the AWM Group 3 series, as well as four semis of the Group 1 Maturity, and a middle distance event to complement the well balanced program. Naturally the Wheeler team were well represented in the Maturity and at night’s end had five runners in this weekend’s $100,000 to the winner final. In the opening 525 metres semi, Witch’s Potion landed right behind the lure at boxrise but after clocking 5.08 ran into bother, leaving Hannie Bale in charge. Raced by Paul Wheeler, the Graeme Bate trained chaser took over and paused the timer at 17.92, with Witch’s Potion and Whispering Wind her nearest threats. But when the duo chasing the leader collided several times rounding the final bend it ruined their chances, so it was left to Dyna Filbert to do the serious chasing. Dressed in yellow attire, Hannie Bale was on a mission and saluted the judge a length and three quarters ahead of Dyna Filbert in 30.31, with Hackel Bale rocketing home along the paint in third place. It was the 11th win from 41 starts for the daughter of Go Wild Teddy and Dyna Celeste, whilst at The Meadows over 525 metres she’s scored at half of her eight attempts. DESALLE BALE showed far too

THE MEADOWS Saturday with Allan Hawkswell much early pace for her rivals in the next round and after exiting the six trap, led them past the post the first time in 5.00 with three lengths on kennelmate, Napthine Bale. Down the back the daughter of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale went through the next checkpoint in 17.70 with a six lengths buffer over Napthine Bale and Odie For Now, who was warming to the task. Just for a fleeting moment it appeared as though the green vested Desalle Bale might lose, as Odie For Now rallied. But the Lara kennelled racer maintained her momentum and beat Odie For Now by a length and a half, while Napthine Bale was nearly four lengths further adrift. Ladies Bracelet winner, Desalle Bale has won four races from as many starts at the Broadmeadows layout, whilst career-wise her scorecard reveals 17 wins from 31 raceday appearances. A POWERFUL finishing burst saw Gettin Slizzard take a narrow victory in the third semi-final of the Maturity. Silver Spider began fast to take the first split in 5.18, rounding the first turn ahead of Franklin Hero and Jethro.

With plenty of interference occurring, Comic Sans got through to set sail after Silver Spider, while Getting Slizzard had railed through to be third and the race was on in earnest. With the clock showing 18.07, Silver Spider led them to the final corner, where he came off second best in a heavy collision. Racing past them was Gettin Slizzard, who got up to score by a neck to Comic Sans in 30.22, with Silver Spider third. Notching his first Meadows victory at his fifth try, the red vested Gettin Slizzard (Collision x Shirl The Girl) has won six times from 23 starts for Jeff Britton and owner, Allan Lie. THERE’S NO STOPPING Barcia Bale, who ran to the front after Ima Geisha Girl had recorded 4.99 early and was never caught. A litter brother and kennel companion to Desalle Bale, he rattled off a fiery 17.60 mid-race section before beating Ima Geisha Girl by four and a quarter lengths in Best Of Night 29.84, with three quarters of a length to third placed Peter Rocket. It was another great win by the runaway chaser, Barcia Bale, who made it nine wins from nine attempts, with four of those victories at The Meadows.

Irma vs Arising SATURDAY NIGHT’S AWM Distance Championship final will surely go to either Irma Bale or Arising following similar efforts to land their respective heats last weekend. Irma Bale settled behind the pacesetting Lady Grey until they neared the split marker coming off the back then came away for a seven lengths victory in 42.84, beating Czar and the fast finishing He Knows Uno on their merits. Rac ed b y P au l Wheeler and trained by Graeme Bate, Irma Bale secured her first success over 725 metres at the

Northcorp Boulevard venue, whilst the Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale product has racked-up 22 wins from 43 outings overall. THERE’S NO DOUBTING the immense potential of Arising, who landed the other AWM heat in 42.93. Trained by Jan Cottrell, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Pure Elle came from the four alley but was in trouble soon after the start. Having settled down midfield behind the front running Fyna Bale and Mission Complete, the Langwarrin kennelled chaser worked his way along the rail and took over in the back straight to post 29.92. From thereon it was easy pickings for Arising, who coasted to the line two and a half lengths clear of the wide tracking Double Champ and third placed Lektra Jay, who seemed to have every chance of scoring. Also on debut at the northern suburbs half-mile trip, Arising has snared 10 wins from 19 starts.

Consistency rewarded RUNNING A NEW Personal Best, Johnny Ringo had everything go his way, and from box five took out the Radio Sport National Mixed 4th/5th Grade in 34.51. A lot of early interference saw Don’s Fantasy come out unscathed and cut across to the fence to lead them out of the straight in a sparkling 8.96 before Wattle Bee took over along the back. But the lead had changed again by the next checkpoint, with Johnny Ringo passing through in 22.10, while his main danger appeared to be Max A Zillion, who was still fourth nearing the home turn but on the move. Raced by Terry Wales and Carlyn Knox, the Jamie Ennis trained chaser passed the post over three lengths ahead of Wattle Bee, with Max A Zillion hanging on for third. From 27 raceday appearances, the son of Path To Power and Dance Token has scored seven times with 10 placings, whilst it was his second success over 600 metres at The Meadows.

AT WENTWORTH PARK last Saturday night it was a relieved Anthony Meredith who finally had his star boarder, Mythical Eagle show the greyhound world what the trainer has known for over two years. Mythical Eagle trounced a solid Free For All field and clocked a career best 29.75 for the 520 metres at the Glebe circuit. The son of Phoenix Ice has always been full of huge potential, however, injuries and those little frustrations that happen has restricted his career to just 34 starts, despite his fourth birthday being on the horizon. When the starter said ‘Go’, Mythical Eagle was first out from box four and quickly jammed the inside duo, Bonita Banana and Wez Da Risk. Maintaining the pressure, Mythical Eagle was able to squeeze out the tiny 24kg and 27kg inside girls and use his 33kg frame to roll clear out of the straight. Going down the back Mythical Eagle opened right up and dashed clear of Bonita Banana, with Wez Da Risk and Krazy Fraz next in line. Mythical Eagle had not found the front this early for a long time, and the bold striding black chaser enjoyed the moment, with the clock always going to show a special effort. Turning for home Mythical Eagle had it all parcelled-up, with Wez Da Risk working into second spot and Krazy Fraz running on. At the post Mythical Eagle was a clear five and three quarter lengths winner over Krazy Fraz, who finished strongly, with a length to third placed Wez Da Risk.

NSW Ron Arnold Mythical Eagle (x Modern Mel) has now recorded 13 wins with 11 placings. Krazy Fraz (Hallucinate x Cawbourne Fraz), trained by Ron Bell, has had 49 career starts for 19 wins and eight placings, whilst the Pauline Moran trained Wez Da Risk (Run The Risk x Wez Da Picnic) from 52 career starts has produced 16 wins and 18 placings. ONE of the sport’s big punters has turned his hand to the training caper, and it was a city winner for Brad Canty when Avondale Milano led throughout in the Macro Meats Stake over 520 metres. From box three, Avondale Milano jumped straight to the front, with Tuqiri and Dollar Bill both trying to match the leader into the first turn. Avondale Milano hit top gear down the back and was really motoring. When heads were turned for the homeward dash Avondale Milano was in full swing and raced to the line a dominant six and a half lengths winner over Dollar Bill, with Tuqiri Magic a further two and a quarter lengths away third. In winning her first race at the venue in three appearances, Avondale Milano, an August 2009 litter of Col-

Dollar Bill (Brett Lee x Flying Matilda), prepared by Ray Sims, has had 13 career starts to date for two wins and six placings, whilst the Adam Wade trained Tuqiri Magic (Collision x Fancy Lee) after seven starts has notched two wins and two placings. IT’S PRETTY RARE for number 10 to be semaphored a winner at the city venue, but this was the case when Black Valiant

scored his first win over the 520 metres. The victory was well assisted by the aid of the two draw, and despite a slowish beginning, the son of Eiffella was able to roll along the paint and sit third out of the straight behind Chubs The Weapon and Catch The Post. Chubs The Weapon took them down the back and still led nearing the home turn, but it was Black Valiant that continued to make ground and threatened rounding the home turn. Finishing strongly, Black Valiant loomed up and took over down the

running to win by one and a quarter lengths from Catch The Post in 30.22, while Chubs The Weapon finished third. Black Valiant (x Red River Valley), owned and trained by Barry Elms, has raced on 34 occasions for eight wins and 16 placings. Catch The Post (Slater x Vivid Subject), trained by Rita Nicolaou, has had 68 career starts for eight wins with 17 placings, whilst Chubs The Weapon (Spiral Nikita x Jessica Nimbus) has produced four wins and four placings from 11 career starts and for trainer, Neville Brown.

FORMER NSW chaser, Blackalls Boss scored an impressive all the way win in last Friday night’s Group 2 Skill Training Victoria Shepparton Cup final run over 450 metres. After clocking the second fastest time of the heats, 25.14, the son of Hallucinate and Blackalls Beauty lined up in box three as third pick with punters at $7.60. The favourite was the fastest qualifier, El Brooklyn from box one, who stifled the betting at $1.90. Her kennelmate, Don’t Knocka Him out in box eight was second elect at $5.00, and those three gallopers were the only ones under double figure odds. The next two in commission were the Graeme Bate duo of Leeroy Rocker at $11.50 and Classy Maldini at $11.90. The remaining trio were Stagger at $13.20, Bubba’s Dream at $17.90 and Allen Hertz at $32.30. When the traps flew open to send them on their $42,000 quest it was Blackalls Boss and Leeroy Rocker that came out running, with El Brooklyn also smartly into stride. Blackalls Boss had the lead to the first mark in 6.48, with Leeroy Rocker in second spot, a length down, while El Brooklyn was over on the fence a neck away third, and they had Classy Maldini and Stagger behind, with Don’t Knocka Him trapped wide. Blackalls Boss was on a mission out in front and sped around to the second checkpoint in 11.16. Leeroy Rocker was doing the chasing two lengths down, with a further length to El Brooklyn, while Classy Maldini and Don’t Knocka Him were still in contention for a podium finish. Nearing the home turn Blackalls Boss was doing it nicely at the head

of affairs and entered the straight with a two lengths lead over Leeroy Rocker, who was tracking a bit wide, with El Brooklyn on the fence the only other dog with any winning chance. But that was not to be, as Blackalls Boss was in no real danger over the concluding stages and went on to score by three lengths over a gallant Leeroy Rocker, with El Brooklyn a half length further adrift. Next in was Allen Hertz ahead of Don’t Knocka Him, Stagger, Bubba’s Dream with Classy Maldini dropping out to finish last. Blackalls Boss, owned by Vince Tullio, has now started 46 times for 22 wins and nine placings with $69,710 in the bank. In clocking the new PB and BON time of 25.10, the red fawn chaser made it two wins and a second from all three runs on the track. We caught up with Blackalls Boss’s trainer, Michelle MalliaMagri, who told us, “He went great; when he got out like he did and led, I held my breath until the last 20 metres.” “I thought he probably had to lead to win, and when he got out like that I thought he’d be hard to catch.” “He had Leeroy Rocker chasing him, and he is a very good young dog.” “He went quicker than El Grand Senor went last year, so I’m pretty happy about that.”

Blackalls Boss and a big band of supporters after his brilliant all the way Shepparton Cup victory. NGF punters would have been cashed-up after the victory, as he was our first selection and paid $7.60. “And it’s very hard for any dog to be caught when they’re running times like that.” This was second time lucky for Blackalls Boss, as he qualified for the Traralgon Cup. “He went super in a heat there, but that was a great final and I don’t think he’s the strongest 513 metres dog around.”

“Plus I hadn’t had him that long and he probably wasn’t as hard as I’d have liked, and then he had no luck,” added Michelle. It’d been a few years since Michelle had Group success, and she reported, “Yes, it’s been a while between drinks. This is our first group success since 2006 when Slick Galore won The Zoom Top.”

Finally, we asked Michelle what was in store for Blackalls Boss. “I’d like to have a try at the Nationals; Hobart would suit him fine, but I’m not overly confident about him getting through at Sandown.” “Still, even though he’s three and a half, I swear he’s getting stronger with age, so we’ll see what happens.” - Darryl Embling

THE TWILIGHT racing timeslot last Wednesday was at the Richmond track, and we may have unearthed a potential star of the future. In front of just a handful of local patrons, the Tracey Bruce trained Cawbourne Pauly absolutely smashed his rivals over 600 metres, making it two from two over a middle distance journey. Incredibly, the winning margin was 13¾ lengths, with the winning time of 35.28 being just .07 outside the track record. This great turn-around in form has come after the son of Collision was beaten in all of his first five race starts over sprint trips, so the longer journey looks to be the future from hereon in. Spearing out from box one, Cawbourne Pauly led comfortably into the first corner, with the check vested Freezing Cold well into stride along

NSW Ron Arnold with Surge To Excel in the yellow singlet. At the lap mark, Cawbourne Pauly led with control, while the immediate chasers, Rappa Jackson and Surge to Excel were still in contention. However, as they headed down the back the leader started to warm to the task and gradually increased his advantage. Off the top bend Cawbourne Pauly had opened right up, and with the challengers unable to match the front runner, the gap started to widen

It Girl stormed home to score over the Richmond 330 metres trip.

even further. Down the home running Cawbourne Pauly streaked away for a dominant win over Rappa Jackson, with Surge To Excel back in third place, a further three and three quarter lengths away. Cawbourne Pauly, from an April 2010 litter of Cawbourne Kylie, has career stats now reading seven starts for two wins and three placings. Rappa Jackson (Bombastic Shiraz x Teeze), trained by Graham Pickering, has had 21 career starts for three wins and eight placings, whilst the Andy Lord prepared Surge To Excel (Where’s Pedro x You’re My Lady) after 11 starts has three wins with three placings. RUN THE RISK has been underutilised but winners keep appearing and it was It Girl, who sped over the short course to win the Australia Colour Television Stake. When the lids opened at the 330 metres start the best away was Sull’s Girl from box two, with Miss Abramovich in the blue vest being next into stride, with It Girl from box three in the middle of the pack. Off the top bend Sull’s Girl led but was quickly challenged by It Girl, as they ran to the home corner. In the straight It Girl drew clear, with both Miss Abramovich and Cawbourne Raz running on. At the post, It Girl held on determinedly to win by three quarters of a length to Miss Abramovich in 18.91, with Cawbourne Raz a further one and three quarter lengths away third. Miss Abramovich (Over Flo x Nova Lira), raced by John Polidano, has had 27 career starts for three wins with 13 placings, whilst Cawbourne Raz (Droopys Marco x Cawbourne Cathy) has score twice with nine placings from 17 starts for trainer, Tracey Bruce. ANOTHER SMART WINNER over the short course was the Wayne Shelton trained Made To Cruise, who clocked a handy 18.77. Quickly into stride from box two, Made To Cruise matched motors with the red rugged runner, Fun Girl for the first few strides but by the top turn it was Made To Cruise that had worked to the front. With her rivals bunching behind,

Made To Cruise kicked well clear as heads were turned for home and raced strongly along the home straight to record a five and a half lengths win over Fun Girl, with Mystic Imp working home solidly into third spot, a head away. Made To Cruise, by Made To Size out of Cruise Oz, to date has produced 11 wins and five placings from 25 career starts, having saluted at six different venues. Fun Girl (Hallucinate x Amuse Me), trained by Christine Mackenzie, has had 16 starts for two wins and eight placings, whilst Loretta Rice puts the polish on Mystic Imp (Magic Sprite x Kaylee’s Angel), who’s raced six times for a win and four placings.

QLD David Brasch Thursday night since 2005 when Gale Force Flyer led until the shadows of the post,” said Rob. “We haven’t had another dog that we wanted to bring here on a Thursday night since.” Arch Nemesis was bought as a four months-old pup from breeder, Rob Duff in Newcastle. Rob Gale convinced Duff to switch pups. “I wanted a dog that had both testicles down,” said Gale. “When I rang Rob he said the only black dog left had just one testicle down.” “Rob had the other dog himself and wanted to keep it. He switched for me.” Arch Nemesis has always shown great ability, breaking 19-seconds when winning a Maiden over 331 metres, and 23-seconds in a Novice over 395 metres. “I had him ready to race late last year but decided to do a university course, so I sent him down to John Watts to train,” said Rob. “But he got hurt, and by the time he was ready to race again I was ready to get him home.” The dog is named after a cartoon that the Gale family watch. “Rob reckoned he wanted a dog to be the arch nemesis of some of his rivals,” said Joanne. And that's how it turned out on

Thursday night. Rob and Joanne were confident. “He ran a good second to Rando’s Rocket at his previous start and had improved out of sight since then,” said Rob. “But when Rando’s Rocket won again last Monday night, I was even more confident.” “Obviously with Driveway Diva in the race we couldn’t be overconfident. But we thought he was a great chance.” “He had run a 5.68 first section at his latest run.”

Diva’s future FAYE AND DARRYL Currey admit Thursday night wins are fine, but for Uptown Diva her great future is as a brood bitch. Darryl admitted Uptown Diva is “on her last legs”, but that was far from the case when the bitch scored an impressive 600 metres Fifth Grade win at Albion Park last Thursday night. The daughter of Eiffella and Adios Magic is a litter sister to Kanuna Miss, who had won earlier in the night. Uptown Diva scored by a half length over Stubborn Babe, with two lengths to Surfin Steffi third. “She’s getting close to retirement,” said Darryl, whose wife, Faye trains the winner. “We’ll keep coming back to Albion Park with her for a while, but it won’t be long before she retires.” Uptown Diva has won 15 races and been placed 16 times in a 45 start career. She was a luckless second in the Group 2 Queenssland Futurity two years ago.

At Albion Park last Thursday, Sue and Neville Tonks watched Smashing Dancer take out a Novice, clocking 30.61 for the 520 metres trip to rackup her second win from four starts. The Curreys, from Casino, sent her south recently to be trained by Eric Castle. “They did an absolutely wonderful job with her, winning a race at Maitland, and she also broke 30seconds winning at Wentworth Park,” said Darryl. “But in the end she was in top

grade and we decided to bring her home.” “She had a few little problems when she arrived, so we got them right and freshened her up.” The bitch bounded back to her best with a middle distance win at Grafton the previous Friday, scoring by eight lengths.

A YEAR AGO Nev Tonks reluctantly got back into greyhound racing. He’d been a regular dog man decades ago, but had a 12 year break. “He never lost that momentum,” said wife Sue. “Every day he gets up at 5.00am, as he did when training dogs.” Nev lives on the Northern Rivers of NSW and a year ago he and mate, Dave Clingan headed to Queensland to check out some pups Russell Druery had for sale. Dave bought one, then bought another for Nev. Nev Tonks was back in greyhound racing. Last Thursday night at Albion Park, Nev showed he’s lost none of that guile when landing a confident betting plunge with Darwin corporate bookies when Smashing Dancer won a 520 metres Novice. Smashing Dancer (Collision - Jay Jay’s Dancer) raced around the leaders on the home turn and scored by a length and a quarter in in 30.61. She downed Alex The Great, with two and a quarter lengths to Harbinger finishing on well for third. Smashing Dancer is raced by Des Cecil. “Des owns Black Candy, that very good race bitch who has just whelped a litter of pups,” said Nev. “I had a couple of dogs for Des when I first got back into dogs a year ago, and I was out at his property and spotted this bitch.” “I told Des she was the best sort on the property, so he asked me to train her.” Smashing Dancer broke-in moderately but has improved remarkably in recent weeks. She won at Casino at her second start. “She slipped post to post in pretty fast time just the other day and we were very confident,” said Nov. A confident betting move on the bitch is reported to have gone on with corporate bookies in Darwin. Kennel commission agents backed the bitch at Albion Park but she started $12 on-course. Nev and wife, Sue and son, Craig had to put their heads together to remember their previous Thursday night winner. “It was a double with Craig Sheila and Incredible Pace, and it was about 20 years ago,” said Sue. During his break from training, Nev opened a bakery at Pottsville and then took his family to Darwin for eight months. “But we are back now and our mate, Dave Clingan talked me into getting a dog again,” said Nev.

Chris Currey with Uptown Diva, winner of a 600 metres Fifth Grade last week in 35.47. The red fawn Queensland Futurity runner-up is nearing retirement after 46 starts.

First city winner ROB AND JOANNE Gale don’t overstep their mark. They know when the time is ripe to take on greyhound racing’s toughest stage, even if it is a year between drinks. That’s what happened last Thursday night at Albion Park when the Gales won a 520 metres Fifth Grade with Arch Nemesis. Arch Nemesis (Collision – Lilly’s Lass) led throughout to score by a length and a quarter over Independence in 30.61, with a half length to third placed Never Tell. Raging hot favourite, Driveway Diva finished unplaced after finding early trouble and appeared to pull up lame. For the Gales, it was their first Thursday night winner. “We haven’t had a runner on a

REIGNING “Queen of Cannington” Hot Irish took on the dual Oaks winner, Deutronium and strode to the line a four lengths winner in the opening heat of the $18,000 Winter Cup last Saturday night. The Ben Abercrombie trained speedster went to the boxes at $4.30; the longest odds she has started in WA for some time. Deutronium for John Iwanyk was heavily supported at $1.80 as she looked to make it eight straight wins in her first try against open company. Hot Irish was away cleanly from box two but was quickly joined by the favourite in the early stages. It was a three-way go passing the post in a 5.71 opening sectional, with Hot Irish the rails ahead of Deutronium and Gable Drum the widest of the trio. Hot Irish, a daughter of Premier Fantasy and Lovey Craves, was looking for her 20th career win as she led by a length onto the back. Gable Drum was working overtime in second, with Deutronium taking a sit behind the leader. The Abercrombie trained, Damon Fardig owned bitch opened a two lengths break leaving the back and looked assured of making another feature final. Hot Irish turned for home four lengths to the good of a pack of six chasers, and the classy bitch charged to the line clocking a slick 30.44. Dodge Challenger finished strongest of the rest to claim second by a neck over Allen Lawson, who sustained a strong run after a sluggish start. The win took Hot Irish’s earnings to $98,000 with 18 of her wins recorded at headquarters. The October 2009 whelp has drawn awkwardly in box five for the final. It is a strong field, despite the likes of early favourites, Vocal Enforcer, Uno Reltub, Deutronium and Autoamerican failing to qualify. From five starts out of the five trap, Hot Irish has managed a win and three minors but has the class to improve on those statistics this Saturday night.

Anyone for a Mac Four other heats of the Winter Cup were conducted, with Roxy Mac most impressive in being the fastest qualifier in 30.39 for owner trainer, Kylie McLennan. The Where's Pedro bitch rocketed from the boxes dressed in pink and shanghai-ed towards the rail to lead Big Stud into the first turn in a bunched field. Big Stud pushed up and held the paint, but Roxy Mac crossed through the catching pen, with Bully Boy three lengths adrift. Roxy Mac spreadeagled the field and left the back straight three lengths clear of Big Stud, with only bad luck likely to stop her from recording her 16th career win. Big Stud put his best paws forward at his third run in the West but went under by four lengths to the Roxy Mac, who started at a generous $6.80. The 30 months-old blue bitch has amassed $84,000 from her 42 career outings. THE OTHER three heats were blow-outs for punters, with double figure odds to the fore. Linda Britton put the polish on three runners in heat three, with Uno Reltub a firm $1.50. The favourite was away only moderately and was crunched between Fifty Six Chevi and kennelmate and litter brother, Indigo Reltub in the early going. Meanwhile, the third Britton runner, Strapper’s Angel blitzed in blue and had a two lengths break out of the straight after a 5.71 opening stanza. The Ricky Ponting owned bitch held off a strong challenge from Belarus along the back and maintained her break into the second bend.

Strapper’s Angel looked to be under pressure as they entered the home straight but held No Justice at bay to win by a length in 30.56. GOLD FOX ($22.40) booked his place in the final with a grinding win over Valdahree in a messy affair. The John Carmody trained chaser was last early but hugged the rail to move into second behind Valdahree through the pen. He took over from the lamplighter in the closing stages and won by a neck in 30.89, with the favourite, Vocal Enforcer third. SURF A COIN (John Crossley) hugged the rail to record his 22nd career win in the final heat. The $11.70 walked out of the outside box and was a clear last on the rail into the opening turn. He railed up to fourth onto the back, with Big Noter making play over Stoked. Continuing to rail for home, he took advantage of Stoked paying too much attention to Big Noter and slipped through to score by a length over McQueen in 30.62. IT IS HARD to go past Hot Irish in the Winter Cup final, in a field that is packed with strength. Roxy Mac is the logical danger and will position well from box two.

Strapper’s Angel with Chris Halse after the white and black bitch scored an all the way win in 30.56.

It’s all give and take HEATS of the Winter Sprint dominated the Mandurah card on Friday, with the Linda Britton trained Give And Take maintaining his excellent record in WA. The Queenslander made it six straight at Kanyana Park, overcoming a slow start before powering past the leader, Where's Katie to salute in 22.76, his slowest winning time. The $1.40 favourite has now won nine of his 11 starts over the 405 metres at Mandurah, including the Group 3 Birthday Cup in January. The son of El Galo and Swelligant has drawn box two in the final and looks the one to beat for the $6,700 on offer. BUDDY BE COOL was the fastest of the heat winners with a slick 22.55. The Terry Erenshaw trained chaser made it four wins in succession with a strong performance after coming from box six. Other heat winners were Twist And Shout ran 22.76 for Brad Keel, De Wade clocked 22.64 for Paul Stuart, Octane Vow, trained by Linda Britton recorded 22.77 and Bill Skipper’s Special Annie ran 22.84.

SOMETIMES SPEEDY brought up the biggest win of her career so far when she landed the 2012 Champion Puppy final for trainer, Troy Murray at Angle Park last Thursday night. A fourth placegetter in a heat then runner-up behind Sheza Diva in a semi-final, Sometimes Speedy was drawn to improve in the final and started well in the market at $4.00. Sporting the red vest, Sometimes Speedy came out running when the lids opened and held the early lead over semi-final winner, Springvale Cool. Skipping three lengths clear of Springvale Cool and Screen Kiss in the back straight, Sometimes Speedy was travelling nicely and reached the top turn still holding a three lengths break. Rounding the final bend with Springvale Cool closing to be within a length and applying pressure, Sometimes Speedy had all the answers and kicked clear again along the home straight, with Betsy Allen working to second. The daughter of Collision and Gemstone Supreme crossed the line a length and three quarters ahead of Betsy Allen in 30.10, with the fast finishing Tercel a close third. It was the fourth success from 11 starts on the track for Sometimes Speedy, who notched her sixth win with seven placings from 18 career starts.

Bity Bamsy blitz ITY BITY BAMSY maintained her excellent run of form for trainer, Petar Jovanovic when she won the Follow Gap on Facebook Mixed 3rd/4th Grade at Angle Park last week. Nicely drawn in box one and loaded away as a $4.60 chance, Ity Bity Bamsy won the start and showed pace in the middle of the track to hold the lead over Aston Odin through the first turn. Under pressure from Aston Odin along the back straight, Ity Bity Bamsy refused to surrender her hard earned advantage and kicked back to reach the top turn a length in front. Stretching the margin to a couple of lengths over Aston Odin through the final bend, Ity Bity Bamsy saved her best for last. Drawing away in the home straight, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Aisha Magic defeated

Aston Odin by four lengths in a new personal best 29.93, with Jesse Be Cool holding down third place.

Runs of the week TRIPPING COWBOY scorched around the Gawler 531 metres last Sunday and broke the long winning streak of My Little Star when clocking the quickest time on the night in a Mixed 3rd/4th Grade for trainer, Rob Mackellar. Starting at $7.50 from box four, Tripping Cowboy jumped fast and made every post a winner, holding out the short-priced favourite, My Little Star over the closing stages. Tripping Cowboy crossed the line four lengths clear of My Little Star in a new personal best 30.69, with Only Jess running on for third. HOPE’S UP racked-up back to back wins at Angle Park last Monday when the Cameron Butcher trained speedster took out a Grade 5 event. Drawn box four, Hope’s Up ($2.30 fav) came out running and led her rivals a merry chase throughout. Hope’s Up fended-off the fast finishing Ritza Retreat to win by a length in Best Of Night 30.06, with Pragmatic taking third place. MISS WOODS maintained her good strike rate over 731 metres at the same meeting when she ran the best time of the night for trainer, Gino Grgurovic. Donning the check singlet and starting the popular $1.70 favourite, Miss Woods settled down second behind Dyna Aline early then charged home over the closing stages to score a strong win. Miss Woods crossed the line almost six lengths ahead of Dyna Aline and Silly Billy Boy in 43.69. CURLWAA HOPE put in a new personal best performance at Angle Park last Wednesday when he ran the fastest time of the day for trainer, Chris Jaensch. Poorly drawn in box seven and starting as a $5.50 chance, Curlwaa Hope settled down just behind Carrumba Cena early on then ran home strongly. Switching around Fergie’s Dream through the final bend and straightening for home with a share of the lead, Aunty Chopper worked clear over the closing stages. With Deville flashing home, the daughter of Collide and Brandeen Lee crossed the line three quarters of a length clear of Deville in 29.91, with Proven Puzzle getting up for third.

Koubek aces rivals AT ANGLE PARK last Thursday night, Koubek broke through for his first 731 metres win at just his second attempt by annexing the Fundraising at Chasers Mixed 4th/5th Grade for

trainer, Rebecca McAuley-Fry. A $2.30 chance behind race favourite, Jordo’s Pushbike ($1.30) sporting the green vest, Koubek jumped fast then showed good pace to share the early lead with Samantha McLaren through the first turn. Gaining a clear lead with a lap to run and getting away to lead by five lengths passing the catching open, Koubek maintained his pace in the back straight to reach the top turn with a six lengths break over Jordo’s Pushbike. Rounding the final bend with his lead reduced to three lengths, Koubek had to dig deep over the closing stages to survive the strong finish of Jordo’s Pushbike. The son of Miagi and Scrumptious managed to hold on and defeated Jordo’s Pushbike by a nose in 43.90, with Samantha McLaren third.

AUNTY CHOPPER bounced back to her winning best for trainer, Gary Pidgeon at Angle Park last Thursday night when she took out the Greyhound Hunnies on Facebook Mixed 4th/5th Grade. LEELICIOUS collected the $2,900 GOBIS Bonus as well as the $12,000 first prizemoney by taking out the Macro Meats Grade 5 Final over 515 metres. Wearing the red vest at $4.90, the Engin Gemci’s promising chaser came out running and drifted away from the rail to lead them down to the first mark in 5.03. Hurunui Hitman was in second spot, three quarters of a length down, with a length to Thomo’s Pizazz, Danyo’s Delboy and Bathilda Bagshot. Leelicious was making every post a winner around to the back, getting there in 18.82, and despite tracking out, she had two lengths on Hurunui Hitman with that gap again to Danyo’s Delboy in third spot. Although still tracking wide, Leelicious didn’t look like being caught and sped to the line a five and a half lengths winner over Hurunui Hitman ($5.30), with Thomo’s Pizazz ($9.80) a length and three quarters further afield. Leelicious, a daughter of Brett Lee and Wheely Wapped, posted 29.43 to make it six wins in 19 goes at the trip, as part of her seven firsts in 28 starts overall.

In the bag BAGGET BALE took the time honours over the 595 metres with a flying run of 34.07 to take out the Find Us On Facebook Mixed 4th/5th Grade. After lining up in box three at $2.70, the son of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale was only fairly away to be fifth as they swung into the straight the first time, where Cloak Of Gold led. Cloak Of Gold was still in front a lap out, posting 9.16 for the first split, and she had two and a half lengths on Ruby Ha Ha, while Bagget Bale had railed to third, two lengths back. Bagget Bale continued his forward move and railed to the front at the far corner, taking the split in 23.41 over Cloak Of Gold, with Ruby Ha Ha sitting third. Once in front, Bagget Bale did it comfortably to the Judge, defeating Cloak Of Gold ($6.70) by five and a quarter lengths, with Ruby Ha Ha ($2.10 fav) two and a half lengths away third. But on this occasion she came out running and posted her seventh career win and picked up a $12,000 first prize plus the all important GOBIS Bonus.

Wild atonement WILD FRANKIE, who was checked six times in a race at this venue a week earlier, atoned by taking out the Bring Your Club To Sandown Grade 5 over 515 metres. Coming from box two as the popular elect at $2.60, the son of Slater and Wild Teddy was away smartly but had a great battle for the early lead with Creative Mojo and Out Of Ink. Getting a length in front at the first mark, it was Wild Frankie taking the split in 5.05, with Black And Cool down the outside getting to second ahead of Creative Mojo and Out Of Ink. With a first turn stack-up behind the leader occurring, Wild Frankie zoomed away to an eight lengths break at the far turn, passing by in 18.88, with Dyna Denny now in second spot doing the chasing, with

make it four wins in five goes at the trip, and five firsts in just eight runs overall. The black galloper is trained by Scott Holmes for P. Scott and A. Duck.

What a gas FABREGAS made it five wins from five starts over the 515 metres by taking out the Follow Us On Twitter Mixed 4th/5th Grade. Rated at $4.20 from box two, the David Hirst trained chaser was away well then drifted out to give himself plenty of room and easily found the lead. Getting to the first mark in 5.05, it was Fabregas by a length and a half over Lektra Fly, with Larocco third ahead of Budgie Lass. Fabregas put the foot down and raced around to the second checkpoint in 18.69 with a five lengths buffer over Lektra Fly and Larocco, who were having a good battle for second, with El Mulatto now fourth. Fabregas was untroubled over the final stages, scoring by five and a half lengths over Lektra Fly ($7.30), with two and a quarter lengths to third placed Larocco ($2.80 fav). Fabregas, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Wicked Witch, is owned by Paul Westerveld, and by clocking a new PB and Best Of Night 28.33, the black galloper took his career tally to eight wins in just nine outings.

Seymour based Peter and Mandy Dapiran don’t mind the long haul to Sandown Park when they think they can pinch a race. And reward came their way when Ikari Honcho saluted at his Sandown Park 515 metres debut in 29.92. Backing-up after a $15 victory at Shepparton on July 14, the victory was the black chaser’s seventh career success. LAST THURSDAY NIGHT was billed to be a great lead-up to this week’s Sportingbet Classic, with a prelude to determine the last three qualifiers for the $40,000 to the winner event. What unfolded was a disaster in PR for our sport, as an obvious issue that “no one has a clue with our grading policy” became quite evident. No sole person is at fault, however, GRNSW, as the controlling authority, should call all TAB Clubs together and re-define the way feature races are advertised. We have many new racetrack officials and they have never graded a meeting in their life, so understanding the grading policy is not a necessity of the job… until you write an advertisement. Two famous words “common sense” could have saved this problem but we have to stick by the book because of “Integrity”. However, on with the race, and it

was Billy The Sid that saved the day with a blistering effort in the prelude, putting most non-runners into the belief that they wouldn’t have won anyway. Exiting box three, Billy The Sid jumped brilliantly and quickly led from No Rules League in the blue vest and Appalousa in the check. Leaving the straight there was plenty of trouble behind the leader, helping the bold striding son of Cosmic Rumble to race clear and have the $5,000 prize at his mercy. Billy The Sid was a ‘mile’ in front coming down the side, with the next interest in who would fill the

placings and the last two final spots. Down the home running Billy The Sid raced powerfully to the line, recording a nine and a half lengths victory over Street Boss, who finished a length ahead of Final Word in third spot. The 520 metres was clocked in 29.72, which was the winner’s best effort in two course victories to date. Billy The Sid, trained by Sid Swain, is from a July 2010 litter of Midnight Lace, with his short career having provided 10 wins and two placings from 14 starts. For the future, keep in mind that this fawn chaser is just two years of age, so improvement is still coming. Street Boss (Bombastic Shiraz x Fancy Smile), trained locally by Owen Makin, has had 49 career starts for 14 wins and 16 placings, whilst Final Word (Suave Fella x Star Elite) has produced 10 wins and 14 placings from 51 career starts for trainer, John Richardson.

THE GRADING debacle left only three runners in the Mr. Metz Stake, as most trainers withdrew instead of putting their valuable chasers around for minor reward. Dapto Derby winner, Free Will stayed on board, begrudgingly, but did deliver the goods for trainer, Anthony Azzopardi by winning the three-dog event. From box two Free Will went straight to the front and was never threatened over the 520 metres trip, defeating a gallant Ruby’s Lair, who ran the winner to one and a quarter lengths in a new PB 29.99, while Tanarama Glamma never really handled the track before finishing third, a distant five and three quarter lengths away. Free Will (Elite State x Formulate) overall has had 30 starts for 10 wins and 13 placings. Tracey Bryant’s Ruby’s Lair (Where’s Pedro x Ruby Red Lips) has raced 57 times notching 12 wins

“George worked in the catching pen at Dapto for decades and Jock’s daughter, Margaret Bannerman is now a successful trainer. “My best greyhound was Kid Bristol, who won 46 of 136 races over distances from 400 metres to 722 metres.” “I whelp, rear and educate my young dogs at Canowindra, but train my racing team at Cringila.” “I make the nine hour round trip from the South Coast to Canowindra at least once a week.” ********** GROUP 1 winning Hunter Valley trainer, Eric Castle is to take a break. “I’ve been training since I was 14 and never had a holiday,” the 65 year-old said this week. Owner-breeder, Steve Connor,, who has won dozens of races with the Castle trained Key To Eden, Main Drag, Suave Fella, Hanify’s Impact, Fully Chic and Beatify said, “Eric is a great trainer, but is also a good bloke.” Castle’s top triumph was In The

Frame’s 2002 National Sprint Championship at Albion Park. ********** NEWCASTLE trainer, Russell Mansley has lost his appeal against the severity of a six months disqualification over positive swabs returned from four of his greyhounds. Amongst them were Thrilling Frank and Thrilling Bloom when they ran the quinella in the Wenty Park Gold Cup final on March 17. Their disqualification elevates third placegetter, Slick Lee to first, so that recently retired greyhound has now won the 2011 and '12 finals. ********** DESPITE scoring her second win in two recent Wentworth Park starts, former Tasmanian, Wandy Pam will do her future racing in New Zealand. Bligh Park’s Frank Hardman was caretaker trainer for owner William Butler until Wandy Pam’s trans Tasman flight could be finalised. The greyhound, who won a 5th Grade heat and final on July 6 and 14, will be trained in NZ by Gary Cleeves. “After she won last weekend, William was kind enough to ask if I wanted to keep her, but I am content to let the original plan stand,'” Hardman revealed.

Cawbourne Pauly makes it two Best Of Night wins on the trot with his latest runaway victory at Richmond by 13 lengths in 35.28.

Dana delights RACING HISTORY is peppered with champion mares and bitches who fail to pass-on their speed to their offspring. But Dana Beatrice, who won the 2009 Golden Easter Egg (Australia's richest race) for Cowra trainer, Rod McDonald, is imparting her talent. Three youngsters from her 19 months-old first litter have won, with none more impressive than July 16 Bathurst winner, Dana Hayley. “She broke-in quickest, and I have a good opinion of her,” McDonald said. “At Bathurst, Dana Hayley was having her first 450 metres test but did it comfortably. “She seemed to be in trouble early from box eight, but put a gap in them at the half-way mark.” ********** SOUTH COAST trainer, Joe De Freitas, whose greyhound, Not Disguised scored his fifth win in 10 starts at Wentworth Park on July 13, is among the sport’s quiet achievers. The former BHP Billiton employee has seldom been without a smart performer for 35 years. “At high school I began helping local trainers Jock and George Taylor,” De Freitas told us.

BUSINESS nowadays is extremely competitive and it seems necessary to dangle an attractive carrot to attract new custom. With greyhound racing, gone are the days when a club puts on a race meeting and hoards of people turn up. Short of going out onto the streets and dragging people into the racetrack, what can clubs do to make a day or night at the races an attractive idea? Offering special deals seems to help. Sandown and The Meadows do excellent promotions for their feature race meetings, and they work well. About 15 years ago, the Queensland Control Board of the day hosted a “think tank” and engaged an outside consultancy firm to look at the greyhound industry. These consultants had little knowledge of racing, the idea being that they wouldn’t have any preconceived ideas. The consultants didn’t really reveal anything we didn’t already know.

QLD Paul Dolan I specifically remember them telling us that it was an ageing population that participated in the sport and more young people needed to be encouraged to become involved. Hardly rocket science, that one! And they told us that greyhound racing was generally an unknown commodity out there in the entertainment marketplace. We already knew that too! Not a lot was been done back then to address those concerns. Nowadays, we still have those two problems... but it appears that there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Social networking, unheard of 15 years ago, is being utilised by many clubs to spread the word about what they have to offer.

It may not be a total solution, but it has to be helping to get the message out there. I notice that the GBOTA in New South Wales is doing a promotion through a website called “scoopon”. At first I thought it sounded like a company selling ice cream… but it’s a website that offers special deals on a variety of activities, including entertainment. When using “scoopon”, you type in your residential postcode and up pops items for sale in your local area. It includes the GBOTA’s attractive package deal of entry, racebook and drinks. Good on the GBOTA. This is clever work. I hope it’s a success for them.

Unkindest cut IF YOU HAVE a pet dog or cat, here’s something that could be of help. This month of July is national desexing month for dogs and cats all over Australia. Many people with pets, and that includes greyhounds, baulk at the

cost of having the animal desexed. The Animal Welfare League of Queensland recently approached some veterinary clinics with a view to offering discounted services for desexing as a special promotion. The idea has taken off and extended Australia-wide. Have a look at the website www. ndn.org.au where lots of information is displayed. Click on the veterinary list to find out who is participating in your area. I counted 53 vets in Queensland, 36 in New South Wales, 21 in Western Australia, 20 in Victoria, six in South Australia and five in Tasmania who are offering various discounts. Some even provide a ‘two for one’ deal. For greyhounds, most of the vets involved are offering a price of $135 to desex a male and $180 for a female.

Three times MICHAEL AND LILLIAN Patterson’s versatile campaigner, He Knows Uno has been making headlines virtually since he hit the race-

and 21 placings, whilst the Adam Wade trained Tanarama Glamma (Big Daddy Cool x Scar Crash) to date has had 44 starts for 15 wins and nine placings. Pawnote: GRNSW should convene all TAB Clubs to a meeting and go over many issues to avoid embarrassments like what transpired this week. The TAB Club circuit (minus GBOTA) consists of only five clubs, and considering they have not met for over 12 months, many situations could be rectified with a get-together. Also for the Dapto Club, please consider next year to have just four invitees and then two preludes, with first and second making up the last four spots. It is doubtful that dog 17 in nominations would be a major player, so all should be happy. And also to trainers when nominating, please know what “Special Event” is on before saying “YES” on your nomination forms.

tracks back in January 2010. The dog’s latest accolade is being announced as the AGRA Greyhound of the Month for June. Wins in the Group 1 Garrard’s Gold Cup and the Imagetec Super Stayers Invitational, both run at Albion Park last month, gained this ‘gong’ for the son of Primo Uno and Honeymoon’s Over. There’s a very real chance that He Knows Uno will be a Queensland Greyhound Of The Year finalist for this year. Even if Patterson retired the dog right now, he would have done enough to be in the top three for this state for 2012. He Knows Uno was a Queensland Greyhound Of The Year finalist in 2010 and 2011. I’m not sure if he would be the first to be a finalist for three years. Records from the Gabba days in the 1970s and 1980s are a bit sketchy and hard to confirm.

Consider this A bargain is something you don’t need at a price you can’t resist.

Mixed 4th/5th Grade, as the rank outsider of $38.90. Now if you can work punters out, a week prior Tom Tukan wore the red vest in a 520 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade and after two early checks, ran second in Best Of Night 30.48. So go figure the 38/1. Anyhow, if you happened to be the lucky one that got the Quaddie, good onya!

The Bate factor

New centurion

THE NEWEST member of our Centurion Club is Lektra Fly. Lining up for his 100th start in a heat of the 400 metres Grade 5 at Geelong on July 5, the son of Where’s Pedro and Elektra wore the “prison” vest to a six and a half lengths win in 22.53. Trained by Lisa Delbridge for Philip Lenehan, the black chaser has scored 26 times in total, with 24 seconds and 11 thirds for over $60,000 in prizemoney. He’s scored three times at The Meadows over 525 metres and at Sandown over 515 metres and 595 metres. He’s been successful at Ballarat over 450 metres, twice there over the 550 metres, at Horsham over 410 metres and twice over 480 metres there, four times at Shepparton over 450 metres and at Geelong over 400 metres and 460 metres. He’s been successful at Sale over 440 metres and over the 520 metres there, twice at Warragul over 460 metres, twice at Cranbourne over 520 metres, as well as at Bendigo over 500 metres and twice at Warrnambool over 450 metres. If he can win at Traralgon and Healesville before he hangs up the collar and lead, he’ll have a clean sweep of all Victorian tracks. Well done Lektra Fly!

Massive Quaddie

WHOEVER said dividends on the dogs were poor, had better think again. On Monday night, July 16 the Quaddie at Cranbourne dogs returned $38,643.60 with the numbers 3 x 7 x 1 x 1 Leg one was Jo’s Got Jazz, who took out the 699 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade at the rather generous quote of $21.70 to put the oomph in straight away. In the second leg it was Born To Star at $10.20 that was victorious in a 520 metres Grade 5. The third leg, a 520 metres Grade 5, was the shortest priced leg when My Spirit scored as a $4.00 fancy. Those punters, who were still ‘alive’, were staring at a huge dividend. But in possibly one of the biggest case of ‘overs’ for the year, Tom Tukan took out the last leg, the 520 metres

GRAEME BATE has won the National Distance Championship once before, and that was with Jarvis Bale. This year he has a great chance of winning it again via another Paul Wheeler owned stayer, Irma Bale. Irma Bale already has the Group 1 Sandown Cup on her CV and she just added the Group 2 McKenna Memorial to the list. The triple track record breaking chaser will have to qualify at The Meadows, and I guess that makes her task of getting to Hobart harder than what it would be if the State Heats and Final were run at Sandown. As it stands, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale has never raced at The Meadows over the 725 metres. In fact, she’s never been over the 600 metres, with her only three starts all over 525 metres without success. She should get a good hit-out beforehand though, as she’s engaged in the Group 3 AWM at the time of writing. Anyhow, the distance at Hobart looks perfect for her and the shape of the track should be ideal too; all she has to do is get there. But I was chatting to Graeme recently and he commented on two of his sprinting kennel stars, Barcia Bale and Desalle Bale. He said that because they haven’t been in Victoria long enough, they’ll have to try and qualify in NSW, and as we now know, the heats are being run at Bulli. As Graeme gladly pointed out, that’s their “home” track. So Graeme could have a few runners in the Grand Final in Hobart and he may have dogs that he trains representing more than one State.

Those two Bales

THOSE two Bales, Barcia and Desalle, at the time of writing had progressed to the semi-finals stage of the Group 1 Maturity Classic. They are from Princess Bale, and as I’ve mentioned before, she is Bartrim Bale’s litter sister. A little stat I only just noticed is both Bartrim Bale and Princess Bale ran track records at Bulli, Bartrim Bale ran 25.92 over the 472 metres and Princess Bale ran 28.79 over the 515 metres.

Coccidiosis

COCCIDIA are organisms that infect the intestinal tract of animals. They must enter animal cells to reproduce, then all end their reproductive cycle by producing spores. The diseases caused by Coccidia are generally mild and self-limiting and include some old favourites, such as toxoplasma, neospora and cryptosporidiosis. All these parasitic organisms grow in the intestinal lining and are then shed in the faecal material as the burst the cells they have colonised. The common coccidian parasites that are limited to the gut lining are isospora and cryptosporidium. The disease is usually only evident in the young puppy under three months of age, and generally only those kept in unhygienic and crowded conditions. The cysts are usually shed in animals that may be under stress, such as a bitch that recently whelped and is feeding a litter of puppies. Her faecal material will be rich in cysts shed from her gut lining, although it is very unlikely that she will be showing symptoms. The puppies ingest the spores and then they in turn develop in the cell walls of the intestine. Because the puppy has yet to de-

By Dr. Des Fegan MVB MRCVS

velop a defence, the multiplication of the organism is uncontrolled and rapidly the whole litter are ingesting spores provided by the mother and littermates. There is usually widespread diarrhoea in the puppies, and very often there will be traces of blood. The disease is treated with antibiotics, so a visit to the vet is required, and it is imperative that hygiene standards are improved to reduce the reinfection rates. Other coccidia have a similar life cycle in the intestine but then progress beyond into the bloodstream, eventually settling as cysts in the body. Often the parasites develop this ability in multiple species, for example, Neospora, which can infect cattle and dogs, or toxoplasma, which can infect cattle, humans, cats and dogs. Each of these parasites has a single species from which it evolved and in which it has the most benign existence and for neospora that is the dog. It is a much exaggerated cause of disease or ill-health in greyhounds. In fact, apart from a transient three to four weeks after the initial infection, the disease is asymptomatic in the dog.

Page 14 - National Greyhound Form, Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Bartrim Bale’s record still stands, whilst Princess Bale’s record has been broken, but her son, Barcia Bale holds the 400 metres track record there at 22.20. A quick look over Desalle Bale’s form shows four wins from five goes over 472 metres at Bulli and one from one over the 515 metres. And Group 1 class poses no problems for her, as she ran third in the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg. Barcia Bale, as we know, holds the track record at Bulli, and that was his only start there. Paul Wheeler and Graeme Bate have also been united in a National Sprint Championship winner before and that was Henerik Bale in 2001. You get the feeling that they are going to play a big part in this year’s titles.

Very interesting

PETER PEARSON had a great story in his ‘On The Line’ column last week about the first National Distance Championship, and I must say it was very interesting for a number of reasons. The first thing was that I always thought the first NDC consisted of four NSW stayers against four Victorians, but as this racebook shows, it has it as five NSW stayers versus three Victorians. Miram Miss, Jeta Girl and Local Blend were definitely Victorians, but so too was Amerigo Lady, who was owned by Buck Buchanan. Now, in all the Honour Rolls of the NDC, Amerigo Lady is shown as a Victorian. Amerigo Lady was not only rated as Australia’s best stayer, but the best stayer in the world by many, more so after her NDC victory against what would be the best field ever assembled for a staying event in this country. Perhaps because Amerigo Lady was being trained by Neville Ballinger for the NDC is the reason she is listed in that book as a NSW runner. I was fortunate enough to see all four of those great Victorians race and they are certainly not overrated by saying they were as good a quartet of half-milers as we’ve ever had representing us. Miram Miss was a daughter of Tamaroo and Anita’s Lass (who was a granddaughter of Sharid) and she held the staying track records at both Olympic Park and Sandown. As a sprinter, she contested a Laurels at her third race start, an Australian Cup final, whilst in the Wentworth Park NDC she ran fourth. She fronted-up 12 months later at Sandown for her second crack at the title and ran last, but strangely enough, the winner was her younger half-brother, Sargood. The one notable exception is the effect it may have on the most vulnerable member of the species. Ie., the foetus. It passes from the blood to the puppies easily and can be a persistent form of infertility. When a bitch is infected in the second half of her pregnancy then the pups may not be resorbed but can be born chronically infected, and occasionally with severe muscular and nervous damage. A recent study in the UK found that pet dogs, often fed canned or commercial dog foods, had a 75% incidence of infection, whereas hunting dogs, which were kept in packs and generally fed raw meat, had an infection rate of 51%. We are likely to have similar infection rates in our greyhound population unless we take measures to destroy the cysts in the meat; the simplest of which is freezing all meat for at least 24 hours. There has been a recent discovery of another canine parasite almost indistinguishable visually from neospora called hammondia. Hammondiosis also infects cattle and lives as cysts in the meat. It causes transient diarrhoea in dogs, but as yet no reproductive or neuromuscular signs have been reported. Walnut Veterinary Clinic 84 Clarendon Street Cranbourne, 3977 (03) 5995 5255

She had victories over most of Australia’s best stayers, including in consecutive starts, Zoom Top and Amerigo Lady, as part of her 32 career wins. Jeta Girl (Gallant Babe x Copy Court) ran fifth in the NDC and Local Blend (Bandar Prince x Marie Again) ran seventh. They were both way above average, if my memory serves me correctly.

The NSW stayers

THE NSW stayers in that original NDC were all top greyhounds too. Zoom Top (Black Top x Busy Beaver), to this day is still rated as one of the best greyhounds to ever set foot on a racetrack in Australia. She ran third in the NDC final that year but wouldn’t have lost any admirers by getting on the podium in that crackerjack field. I can’t say I know much about Grove Park (Paul’s Pal x Miss Warhope), who came in sixth, and according to Greyhound Data, she had no offspring. Diamond Au Go Go comes up with a question mark because as far as I knew, greyhounds could have a maximum of three words in their name, and she had four. She was a daughter of Spotted Lightning and Timid Gift, and apparently she pulled up in the NDC. She did have quite a few pups when she retired, and one was the smart stayer, Crystal Au Go Go to Mister Moss. Holding is the real interesting runner, and one reason was that he was the only male in the field. I seem to recall that he was a powerful sprinter who posted some brilliant times on the big and spacious Harold Park 500 yards trip, but he obviously turned to staying and was even better at that, as he finished second in this race, proving the point I’d imagine. I will point out that living in Victoria in those days put you a million miles away from what happened in NSW, so unless a story turned up in a magazine (of which there was just the one) or it was big enough news to get a mention in the Sporting Globe, the only way you knew what went on in NSW was via the “bush telegraph”.

The Whitlams

I GUESS the fact that Gough and Margaret Whitlam made the presentations at that inaugural NDC is a great thing for greyhound racing to remember, as Gough went on to become Prime Minister of Australia. If political journalists had attended the NDC Grand Final, they could have had the best story of a lifetime, had the second greyhound saluted. His name, as mentioned above, was Holding, and a chap named Clyde Holding just happened to be the head honcho of the ALP in Victoria. And as history shows, Clyde had an “association” with Gough in politics. Yes, you “punsters” who know your political history, they could have had a field day, couldn’t they?

The quirk

ANYHOW, with Amerigo Lady winning the first NDC, a real quirky thing happened. The very first National Sprint Championship was won by the brilliant NSW star, Best Sun (Sunview x Bareena’s Best). And as many have said, Best Sun was the best son of Sunview. And when he retired from the track, he obviously went to stud. And as a sire he produced, yes, you guessed right, the first ever NDC winner, Amerigo Lady. Amerigo Lady was a daughter of Wuuluman Lass (Top Linen x Havoc Rise) and I know very little about her, apart from the fact that a few of her other pups had some ability. A good friend of mine had either a full sister or a half-sister, and he bred from her. The bitch broke her back shortly after having her pups and had to be put down. The pups were then put in with another bitch to rear, but only one pup survived and I have no idea what happened to her.

As for Amerigo Lady, she had litters to two imports, both brought to Australia by Buck Buchanan; those stud dogs being Newmore King and Gabriel Mist, but to my knowledge the line never produced anything of note. Finishing up with Amerigo Lady, I believe a couple of substantial offers were made from America for her, but again, to my knowledge, she never left our shores. However, if any of our readers can add anything, we’d love to hear from you.

Well done Shepp

ONE of my major gripes has been Clubs who leave eligible dogs out of Group races purely because the entry count isn’t perfectly divisible by eight. Well I’m very pleased to report that following-on from Brisbane’s great lead with the Group 1 Winter Cup, Shepparton has followed suit for their Group 2 Cup. The entry count was 53 as far as I know, and yes, it could have been easy to run just six heats and spread the remaining five dogs out as reserves. But Shepparton has done the right thing by all owners and trainers, and all eligible entrants were given a start. I really hope that from hereon in, this’ll be the rule with all Group events. Well done Shepparton GRC!

Meadows too

I DON’T know if you call this good luck or good management, but The Meadows had 11 heats of the Maturity Classic. The entry count seems to have been exactly 88 pups, as there were eight runners in each of the heats. And the following week, 15 entries were received for the Group 3 AWM, whilst in both cases it meant that every eligible dog entered gained a start. Well done to the MGRA.

Great fields

AS IS the case with most big races in Victoria, great fields have been the order of the day for the two current feature races in progress. The Shepparton Cup field was as good as any I’ve seen in quite a while, whilst the dogs still in the Maturity are a very classy lot of young chasers.

Your Say

“Clever Fella” with, “I’m going for the Wheeler/Bate combo as my early picks for the Nashos; Barcia Bale and Irma Bale.” Are you sure you’re not looking over my shoulder, I only just finished writing about them! “Molly Coddle” stated (shortened), “We really need to stop pandering to these nohopers otherwise this Industry will go backwards. Make a Grade 6 like you say, scrap non penalty and give the dogs that deserve a chance a break. We really must keep the standard up in Victoria, as there are plenty of places where the slower dogs can go and race and they won’t get flogged every time they go around.” A lot of the places you mentioned need more dogs and would be ideal for a lot of the dogs struggling even in Tier 3 races. However, I think the problem might be there aren’t enough people in those areas to train said dogs.

THE WILLIAM HILL sponsored UK Festival of Greyhound Racing reached it's culmination with a glittering live Sky Sports covered finals recently at Sunderland Stadium. And an avid fan of the sport has been balancing his exams with fundraising ahead of the big night - despite only being 10 years of age. The aptly named Lewis 'Race', from Spennymoor, County Durham, is grandson of local trainer, Yvonne Bell, and has been running a fundraising scheme on Friday nights for the trainers and regulars. From this, Lewis has raised a mammoth £500 for his beloved hounds, with a cheque made payable to the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) - which he presented to the charity on the night. Simon Fozzard, spokesman for Sunderland Stadium said, “Lewis has done remarkably well to raise such a significant amount of money for a cause that is very close to our hearts here at Sunderland, and naturally to anybody involved in the sport.” Lewis Race said of his initiative,

The sport is on it’s knees in England, but there are meetings where some clubs can boast decent prizemoney. GRV Chief Steward, Glenn Fish responded to OTL’s item last week regarding “Due Diligence”. OTL was critical of the “no action” taken after a greyhound vomited in the kennels after completing in a race. “Please find attached information provided from Mr. Carl Scott in relation to your query regarding Double Jeopary at Sandown on July 5”. “There was no sample of Double Jeopardy’s vomit sent to the analyst, as the greyhound was not under the normal security swabbing process implemented by Stewards when we intend to take samples from a greyhound.” “I directed Double Jeopardy to be vetted after reviewing the DVD replay.” “It was only discovered that the greyhound had vomited when Stewards went into the kennel block to advise the relevant people that the greyhound was to be vetted.” OTL’s take on the matter is that in my humble opinion, the “normal security swabbing process” needs an overhaul.

Learning curve SOME historical data that emanated from Friday night’s Group 2 Skill Training Victoria sponsored Shepparton Cup. Tivashely, Mannerism, dual winner Thorgil Magic, Head Honcho, Kantarn Bale, Knockabout Wok, Whisky Assassin, Slater, Overflow Breaker, Hanify’s Impact and Gardam Prince all have something in common. They all saluted in race record time. But Tivashley, Mannerism and Thorgil Magic managed to break the track record in their respective years. Since the switch from the old Showgrounds site, which conducted their first meeting back on Thursday, January 11, 1973, to their new venue at Kialla, Slater, Hanify’s Impact and Gardam Prince have managed to lower the race record in consecutive years. Din’s Son and El Grand Senor, successful in 2010 and 2011, didn’t continue the tradition.

Snagged TASMANIA’S perennial lure problems surfaced again, this time at Launceston’s The Tote Racing Centre. The July 16 Monday meeting was already hit with poor weather conditions, with heavy rain falling through-

No longer needed, got married, wife knows everything. out the program. The inclement conditions saw the downfall of one of the state’s top sprinters, Rewind who according to his experienced trainer, Morrie Strickland, didn’t handle the precipitation and was an unplaced $1.10 favourite in a four dog field. Stewards queried his trainer over the poor performance, and he informed them that he intended to obtain a blood sample of his star sprinter, who had 36 wins to his credit. That was to be the second last race on the 10-event program, as the eighth race was deemed a “No Race” due to the “cable splice” becoming snagged on a roller, which caused the lure to stop suddenly just past the first bend. Mayhem followed, with Feraro Frugal and Billy Pines contacting the lure arm, but unfortunately for Crystal Vixen, she cannoned into it and somersaulted to a sudden halt. A veterinary examination detected a fractured radius and ulna of both forelegs and was subsequently euthenased. Stewards, in consultation with club officials, decided to postpone the rest of the meeting after they received advice that the cable was unable to be repaired within a timeframe that would enable the running of the last two races. Fatalities happen in all three codes, but when unfortunate incidents similar to this occur, it demonstrates the fickle side of racing.

Ireland gets ready for Derby OTL mentioned recently about Ireland’s famous Irish Derby, which will celebrate it’s 80th anniversary this year. Further advice was given to potential visitors to make contact with the Irish Board’s marketing department’s Orla Strumble or Dawn Quinn if you fancy dining at the Dublin venue. But be quick, as there are limited seating in the members area. Some more news arrived from the Shamrock Isle concerning the legendary Mick The Miller. Brendan Berry, who heads the local Killeigh committee that was successful in obtaining a grant from

the Irish Greyhound Board and managed to have a life-like sculpture erected in the town square, advised that the tiny village played host to Des and Pauline O’Kane, who landed the English Derby with Priceless Border back in 1948. The O’Kane’s, like many overseas greyhound visitors, headed to Killeigh to see the Mick The Miller statue and took with them the 1948 English Derby Cup to show the locals. Brendan Berry and his devoted band of workers were thrilled to meet the O’Kanes and in particular view the famous silverware, as the 25th of July commemorates the 83rd anniversary of “Mick’s” success in the London Pommie classic. “It was the first time an English Derby Cup has been seen in the village since Mick The Miller’s owner, Fr.. Martin Brophy returned home with the 1929 spoils. There’s plenty of history in Ireland of our greyhound roots, and those lucky enough to be travelling over for this year’s series should take the time and head down to Killeigh to see the Mick The Miller shrine. A visit to Doyle’s Pub, just across the town square, houses a few of Mick’s famous mementoes, and the publican, Matt Doyle and his wife, Kathleen are hospitable folk.

They came from near and far for this year’s Czech Racing Federation’s International Derby series. Ivo Widzziolek advised OTL that greyhounds from Austria, Czech Republic, Crotia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania and Slovakia represented their countries in this unique series. The winner, leader Dopping Hutch (Concorde Swift - Feherhegyi Futo Lady) wearing the blue vest, heads into the first bend at the Rabapatona circuit. No catching pens either, they all finished strongly onto the lure arm. Run over 492 metres in 29.81, the Czech Derby final was the last race on a huge 16-event program.

Queen Jade, a daughter of Hondo Black and Beautiful Queen, landed the Czech Derby Consolation.

False alarm OR maybe a porky pie. The internet is a wonderful tool. Especially with our sport, whereby we can tap into various greyhound forums around the globe and get up to date news as it happens. But on occasions there can be some very misleading information posted on even some of the most reputable sites. A recent claim from Ireland suggests that Australian interests have purchased the very handy chaser, Mildean Tally. Sounded like a good story, but OTL’s Irish source poured cold water on the possibility that this bitch would finish up down under. Bunkum was the Irish reply after he went out of his way to contact the Irish owners of the bitch concerned.

DIRECTORS of the NSW GBOTA advise that an upgrade of the Wentworth Park catching pen and surrounds is nearing finalisation. Works completed to this point include upgrading of the fencing, replacement of sand in the catching pen and upgrading of drainage in the catching pen and run-off areas surrounding the catching pen. Works still in progress include

landscaping of the surrounding area and the installation of new padding. The new padding will be installed progressively over coming weeks. The landscaping will be completed over the next week and will involve laying of turf. The turf will ultimately make the area far more suitable for emptying of greyhounds. The turf, however, will need time to establish and hence trainers will

be restricted from using the area in the immediate future. Despite access to this area being restricted, trainers will still be able to park in the Leger on race nights and the external car park (adjacent to the kennel house) is able to be used on Monday night trial sessions as well as race nights. - Brenton Scott Executive Officer

Other winners on the program were Sunlit Ocean for the French kennel from Wagga, and Taminga Flex for local trainer, Ken Richards. Forever Izmir was impressive at his first start for Cootamundra trainer, Greg Mills, winning in 18.10. The 5th Grade Final over 311 metres was taken out by the Glen Seward prepared Sheza Lucky Thin, and there was no one happier oncourse than Glen’s daughter, Dana. Rumour has it that she is the hard worker behind the scenes, who helps with anything at home with the dogs. Kenny Lone Stone produced a strong run when winning in 26.38 for Wagga trainer, Douglas Warren. Dear Miss Goose for trainer, Robert Arnold, won the 11th race in 18.21, while Sunlit Boy won in 18.25 for Bill Richards of Wagga. The last was taken out by Wyndham Wallace for Gerry Molloy in 18.32. My dog to watch out of this meeting is Precious Osti for trainer, Lyn White, who won in 26.25 and certainly seems to be improving with each run.

Another TAB win is on the cards for this chaser. We race again on August 12 when heats of the Ray Gavenlock (1-4 wins) and country grading policy are to be contested over 457 metres. Noms close 12 noon on Tuesday, August 7. Good Luck, Good Punting and Good Racing! - Temora Tiger

The Club has scheduled some Prelude races for the August 12 meeting, and these will be 8-dog events to help prepare your charges for the additional runs. This meeting is three weeks prior to our final event to assist you with a reasonable break before our final meeting. Sunshine and happiness

A SUNNY DAY was enjoyed by all at Melton on Saturday for the running of the Werribee Cup, the J. N. Smith Memorial and also the supporting stakes. Once again a huge thank you to the Melton GC for hosting this meeting for the Werribee CC. Whilst it was a tad chilly to start off the morning, the weather improved by the hour and we enjoyed the sunshine for the majority of the day. Manx Missile did it again taking home top honours in the Werribee Cup, defeating Zimmer, who has coursed very well all season. Russ McCrae had further success two events later when Al Moran got up to win the Dog Maiden No.1, which brought up a double for the Jane Eliza Syndicate, downing Mr. Chow from Jason Formosa’s kennels, I must say I really think Jason and his helpers cover more ground than any of the dogs on the day, running backwards and forwards from slips to the catching pen and everywhere in between, I am sure there were some very tired boys in the Formosa camp after that effort.

The Werribee J.N. Smith Memorial coursing winner run at Melton was Wilson’s Venom. Ben Divirgilio had a win with Wilson’s Venom in the J. N. Smith Memorial, proving to be too good on the day for the Don Jarvis trained Kid Condor. Other Maiden events were taken out by Bob and Lexie Iredale’s Looking Magical, who was having his first crack at the coursing. Jess Fothergill had more to celebrate than just getting her Drivers Licence when Jacas Boy proved to be too good for Bernie Ryan’s Catch On in the Maiden Dog Stake No. 3. It was a happy trip home to Drysdale for Jerry Maye and helpers, going home with a double for the kennels, winning both Bitch Maiden Stakes when Connemara Fire and Connemara Flame were first past the post in their respective finals. The last event for the day was the John Maple Greyhound Complex Oaks Trial and Withywinds for Lee Mitchell got the chocolates over Full Of Bubbles for Justin Wells. It’s great to see some youngsters having a great day out, and I don’t just mean the girls! No doubt they will both be back at Melton on August 4th & 5th to try their luck at winning the Victoria Oaks. Yes that’s right, the first of our Classics for the 2012 season kicks-off with the 2012 Derby and Oaks meeting in a fortnight - the start of a huge month of Coursing. It’s the first of our classics, we then head to the new home of the Victoria Coursing Club at Newstead Racecourse for the running of the Inaugural Newstead Cup. The club, committee and helpers have been working extremely hard over the past few months to make sure it all goes off without a hitch. We then head to Lang Lang for the final time in 2012 for the 46th consecutive running of the Waterloo Cup. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters, volunteers and sponsors for continuing to make our sport a fun and enjoyable day out for all concerned. If you have never been along to see what we are going on about, you really don’t know what you’re missing. I look forward to seeing you and your pups at Melton in two weeks time. - Carolyn Mills Secretary NCAV
