GREYHOUND RACING needs a drawcard, a superstar, and Irma Bale certainly has all the hallmarks of fitting the bill. Early in her 45 start career, Irma Bale landed the Young Stars Classic (bitches only) heat and final over 450 metres at Shepparton in 25.50 and 25.66 respectively, and then had a few more sprint runs before being stepped-up to the longer trips.

THE

She was in her element, winning the Anniversary Cup at Geelong (596m) in Record Best 34.25 and was then put over the half-mile journeys. And boy oh boy, didn’t she fly, as she took out the 715 metres Sandown Cup in 41.79. Between long distance runs the classy stayer took out the Stayers Cup (660m) at Bendigo’s brand new track, setting the time

standard at 37.79, before landing the McKenna Memorial at Sandown in a very smart 33.99. Back over 725 metres at The Meadows, the Paul Wheeler owned daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale annexed an AWM Distance Championship heat, but got rolled in the final, having copped a buffetting in the back straight. THIS YEAR’S NATIONALS series was unique from the kick-off, as the NSW qualifying heats were conducted at the Bulli circuit to coincide with U-turn chasing, so our grand finalists would feel at home around the Hobart track later this month. For the stayers there was further unique moment as the 701 metres journey was specially designed to cater for the Hobart track, and both our heat winners will give this State great representation, should they advance through next week’s State Final. Trained by Dawn Garrett, Zsa Zsa is an old time style stayer who comes from well back in the field and possesses a powerhouse finish. After a slow beginning, Zsa Zsa from box six gave Irinka Gabby a start and beating, clocking 41.05. Zsa Zsa, by Flying Penske out of Classy Creek, overall has had 31 career starts for 12 wins and 10 placings. Winning all three starts to date at the Slacky Flat track, this 29kg chaser would be really suited by Hobart. DESPITE HER EFFORT, Zsa Zsa still needs to get over the champ, He

NSW Ron Arnold Knows Uno, who again came and conquered. One of the most professional chasers we have ever had, He Knows Uno handled his first start at the track like a real pro, recording 40.50, which is some seven lengths quicker than the other winner. He Knows Uno came out of box two and held the inside early. He eventually raced through and took the short cut to challenge early leader, Switch Up on the home turn. Drawing away over the concluding stages, He Knows Uno recorded his 31st victory for the Patterson clan. He Knows Uno, by Primo Uno from Honeymoon’s Over, has won five of his past six starts.

Barcia Bale showed his massive talent by turning a NSW State Heat of the National Sprint Championship into a procession, scoring by six lengths in 26.12 over 472 metres. - pics courtesy robshots@hotmail.com

AT THIS STAGE our best comparison for our new star, Barcia Bale is to compare the black dog to the UK champ, Frankel, as they both are unbeaten in around a dozen starts to date. Obviously our own Black Caviar is on the next level, holding a handy lead of 22 unbeaten efforts. Having his first start at the Bulli track over 472 metres, Barcia Bale handled everything superbly and clocked a smart 26.12, defeating Chiseled by six lengths. From box four, Barcia Bale jumped on terms with the others and then gathered speed quickly to clear the pack comfortably by the first turn. From thereon it was a procession, as this new star gave nothing else a chance. Barcia Bale (Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale) represents NSW out of the Brendan Wheeler kennel. A DEFINITE THREAT to the unbeaten reign is the Dave Righetti trained Exclusive One, who produced a most At Bulli on Monday night, Zsa Zsa gave her rivals a start then beat them determined effort to narrowly win a heat. The son of Primo Uno and Clair in 41.05 in a 701 metres NSW State Heat of the National Distance title.

Maude has won all five starts at the oneturn venue so will be most appreciative of a Hobart final. In this heat the speedy Free Will led up from box one, while Exclusive One settled down second, albeit some six lengths off the lead. Free Will was travelling strongly down the home running, but Exclusive One knuckled down to finish powerfully, as too did Vintage Blend, who flashed up late. The judge gave Exclusive One the verdict by a nose over Free Will, with Vintage Blend a head away third. AN UPSET WIN was scored by Hoover Boy, who proved too solid for top sprinters Ritza Ryder and Irinka Luca. This heat had only five starters but the lead changed hands on four occasions. Hoover Boy from box four sat outside early leaders Fancy Dean and Irinka Luca, while Ritza Ryder was last early. Down the home running Hoover Boy drew clear and held out the fast finishing effort of Ritza Ryder to score in 26.44.

By Where’s Pedro from Still Hoping, Hoover Boy, trained by Luke Azzopardi, has raced 22 times for eight wins and five placings. RETURNING to the track for his first start in nearly two months, Oaks Road scored a brilliant win after giving Desalle Bale a start and a comprehensive beating. The Mark Gatt trained sprinter drew a hard heat and the effort showed he will do us proud if he gets through next week. Desalle Bale jumped well from box seven and led clearly at the top turn. Oaks Road and Billy The Sid worked up to chase the leader, however, as heads were turned for home it was still Desalle Bale a clear leader. Half-way down the running Oaks Road warmed to his task and the 31kg chaser joined Desalle Bale nearing the post before drawing clear to win by three lengths in 26.37. Oaks Road (Spiral Nikita x Leprechaun Pace) notched his 20th win from 48 career starts. - Ron Arnold

BYE BYE BUCKS was deservedly elevated to this state’s top sprinter position a little while ago, and the son of Bit Chili has continued to cement his top spot every week. Last Saturday night at Wentworth Park the 36kg chaser made it win number 13 in dominant fashion. Following his Dapto Megastar victory the previous week, Bye Bye Bucks led from the first turn and was untroubled when making it five wins from his past six starts. Not taking anything away from his victories, the luck of box draws has certainly played a part, with three reds and one pink rug certainly helping his cause over this period. Punters rallied strongly for the red runner in the 520 metres Centrebet Stake, and a little bit of good fortune made the result inevitable. When the lids opened there was a straight line away, with Little Ed going fast from box two and Wez Da Risk came across the seven gate.

NSW Ron Arnold Shortly afterwards there was a jam in the centre, as Time And Money and Young Snozz were squeezed out of play, while Bye Bye Bucks railed up and was able to get past Little Ed leaving the straight. Racing clear down the back, Bye Bye Bucks was nicely ahead of Little Ed and Wez Da Risk, with the others spread out over plenty of territory, and noted was the fact that Time And Money was last. Coming down the side it was “get in the queue” for the favourite backers, as Bye Bye Bucks was heading to victory. However, the race for the plac-

Bye Bye Bucks stamped his authority on the Free For All, running 30.04 over 520 metres for Glen Jones and trainer, Ken Lewis.

Zipping Catra made a powerful mid-race charge to take out a Mixed 4th/5th Grade in 29.96 at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, making it his fifth win at the Glebe circuit for owners, Fiona and Martin Hallinan. ings was starting to show interest. Little Ed and Wez Da Risk were battling on, with Go Mighty Shiraz really motoring, and he shouldered the other pair out of the way on the home turn. Go Mighty Shiraz continued his drive to the line and reduced Bye Bye Bucks’ winning margin to one and three quarter lengths in 30.04, while from the clouds Time And Money swooped out very deep and took third prize, a further eight and three quarter lengths astern. Owned by Glen Jones and trained by Ken Lewis, Bye Bye Bucks (x See Ya Senorita) has enjoyed a career of 36 starts that have yielded 19 wins and nine placings. Go Mighty Shiraz is by Bombastic Shiraz x Go Mighty Mouse and for trainer Norm Becroft has had 38 career starts with 13 wins and 10 placings whilst Time And Money is

by Slater x Black Sea and for Anthony Bragg has had 51 career starts for 10 wins and 23 placings. As for Time And Money, it is great to see this girl back in work after her career-threatening injury in the Easter Egg final, and this run was outstanding so connections are back enjoying the ride. JASON MACKAY has been a little quiet in town of late but found the mojo again with a powerhouse effort by Zipping Catra, who claimed his fifth victory at the circuit. Competing in the Macro Meats Stake, the race was on when the lids opened and Konung Bjorn in the white singlet jumped best with Electro Storm from box five, while between them was the normally brilliant beginner, Cookie’s Recipe missed the kick noticeably. Dressed in black, Zipping Catra charged down the outside and formed

a line of three leaving the straight. Entering the back straight Konung Bjorn led but Zipping Catra loomed up solidly and quickly zipped to the front. She put a big space on her rivals very quickly and maintained control and increased her lead all the way, reaching the judge six lengths clear of the powerful chaser, Electro Storm in a slick 29.96, while Konung Bjorn held on for third, a further one and a quarter lengths away. Zipping Catra, by Malfoy out of Or Catra, overall has had 29 starts for 11 wins and 10 placings. Electro Storm (Bit Chili x Hallucinating), trained by Majella Ferguson, has produced five wins an 10 placings from 24 career starts, whilst Frank Hurst’s Konung Bjorn (Bombastic Shiraz x Lachlan’s Gift) has had 23 career starts for four wins and 12 placings.

AS ANTICIPATED by many fans, Irma Bale took out the first State Heat of the Victorian National Distance Championship, thus cementing her place as one of the favourites to go to Hobart for the Grand Final on August 25. Springing from the inside alley sweetly, the Graeme Bate prepared stayer sped to the front to clock 4.88, with Adelle Bale and Czar doing their best to catch up heading towards the first corner. At the judge the first time it was Irma Bale showing the way by two and a half lengths to Czar in 15.94, with Fyna Bale on the move and now third. But the fact that Czar had reduced Irma Bale’s advantage to a half length as they came off the back in 29.69 put plenty of pressure on the

THE MEADOWS Saturday with Allan Hawkswell leader, while Fyna Bale was still running on, only two lengths further back. It was a bit of luck for the $1.80 popular pick when Czar was flattened rounding the final bend, and it was left to the litter sisters to tough it out to the line. Irma Bale pulled out plenty and staved-off Fyna Bale, scoring by three quarters of a length in a new PB and Best Of Night 42.82, whilst Double Champ came with a belated run to wind up third, a length and a quarter adrift.

Having come up with the rails draw this weekend, Irma Bale seems almost assured of making the trip to Tattersall’s Park in Hobart, where she’ll do battle with WA champ, Miata for the National Distance crown.

Raced by Paul Wheeler, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale has won two of three half-mile races at the Broadmeadows layout, whilst career-wise her scorecard reveals 45 outings for 23 wins and 11 placings, earning $235, 781 along the way. ALSO FROM the Greater Geelong region comes the other heat winner, Lektra Jay, who is trained at Anakie by ‘Team Dailly’. Having previously had four tries over the longest trip at the northern suburbs track without a win, the Phil Lenehan owned chaser possied-up third in the early stages behind the front running Yowyeh (4.89), but then dashed past Lady Grey when she was checked to be second a lap out in 15.93, albeit six and a half lengths in arrears of the Champagne Syndicate’s speedy lamplighter. With the others left for dead as they made it to the back straight, Yowyeh ($3.20 fav) kept the pressure on and was over seven lengths clear of Lektra Jay ($3.60) in 29.64 coming off the back, while there was nearly five lengths to Mimicking now third. But the Angela Langton trained pacesetter started to wilt as they neared the final turn and Lektra Jay took over. The son of Where’s Pedro and former top stayer, Elektra greeted the judge three quarters of a length ahead in 43.09, while third placed Mimicking ($13.60) was a further two and three quarter lengths astern. A colourful white and black dog, Lektra Jay has raced on 86 occasions for 26 wins and 28 placings, grossing $229,010 in stakes. It’s hard to think that any racer is going to beat Irma Bale this weekend, and after

drawing the red vest, her chances improved a even more. I’m sure that Yowyeh is going to make Irma Bale earn the trip across Bass Strait to Tattersall’s Park for their August 25 encounter with WA star, Miata. And of course there was nothing wrong with the way Lektra Jay performed either.

Pure and simple THE ONLY 600 metres race on Saturday night at The Meadows was the Nationwide Seafoods Mixed 4th/5th Grade, and in this event the overrated Max A Zillion was sent out as the $2.30 favourite, ahead of Stetson Donna ($3.70). Boxrise at the ‘bend’ start saw Stetson Donna in her favourite role as pilot, with Breathe Fear and Pure Instinct close at hand rounding the initial corner. A lap out Stetson Donna had been overtaken by the $12.00 chance, Breathe Fear, who clocked a smart 8.99, with Pure Instinct next on the fence poised to pounce. But in the yellow singlet, Breathe Fear defied them to catch up and sped along the Camp Road side of the course to reach the next checkpoint in 22.04, with Pure Instinct now second and on the charge. Taking over in the run to the judge, the pink vested Pure Instinct scored by three quarters of a length to the fast finishing Dashing Red, completing the middle distance journey in 34.75, while there was a length and a half to the fading Breathe Fear third. Raced by Tyrone Whittington and Greg Sprod, the light fawn son of Bombastic Shiraz and Weetbix opened his 600 metres account on the track at his second attempt, whilst his

career stats show 18 wins and 21 placings from 55 starts, putting $64,360 in the bank.

Equal quickest SHARING time honours over 525 metres on the night were Krisa Bale and Delfina Bale. Contesting the Scotty’s Meats Grade 5 from the rails draw, Krisa Bale was backing-up her good 30.26 win at the Northcorp Boulevard venue three days earlier, and was attempting to make it a hat-trick. At her 24th raceday appearance, the daughter of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale really improved. She dashed past the early pilot, Allen Emmett at the first turn and was untroubled from thereon. After running personal splits of 5.12 and 17.87, the Paul Wheeler owned chaser was off and gone. Krisa Bale went on to beat Dyna Greer by seven and a half lengths in a new PB 30.04, while Foot Tapper rounded out the placings. Trained by ‘Team Dailly’, it was the seventh win from 22 outings, and two from four over 525 metres at The Meadows. Another of the Wheeler stock, Delfina Bale drew the two gate and led from go to whoa in the Macro Meats Grade 5 Final, covering the sprint trip in a new PB 30.04. Following sections of 5.02 and 17.78, the son of Bartrim Bale and Serene Bale scored by a length and a quarter to Johnny Ringo, with Jungle Hero third. Trained by Steve Collins, Delfina Bale has graced the track on 69 occasions, racking-up 15 wins and 14 placings for $44,523, whilst at the track and distance his CV shows four wins from 21 starts.

Lektra Jay ran a good 43.09 to open his account over 725 metres at The Meadows last week. Pitted against the best Victoria has to offer, Phil Lenehan’s honest stayer has drawn the six alley in his quest to land the NDC State Final on Saturday night. - photos: www.paulmunt.com

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 And she also holds the Horsham record over 570 metres at 33.28. Obviously with no injury worries, trainer Graeme Bate put her in the Victorian division of the National Distance Championship, and from the three trap the honest stayer led from go to whoa in Best Of Night 42.82. Irma Bale comes into this weekend’s final at the Northcorp Boulevard venue as the one to beat and will sport the red vest. What more could you wish for… prime draw, top trainer and a greyhound that racing at its peak? For mine, that’s a win, win,

win formula! Pitted against Irma Bale in the NDC Victorian State Final is Yowyeh, who should lead them, just as he did in last week’s heat before going under to Lektra Jay. Box draws don’t faze Lektra Jay too much, and from the six trap he should go well again. He ran 43.09 to open his distance racing account at The Meadows, but recently won a 715 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade at Sandown in a smart 41.92. Trained by ‘Team Dailly’, the Phil Lenehan owned white and black dog is bound to be thereabouts at the business end, and a trip to Hobart seems possible.

Yowyeh (box 6) and Fyna Bale (5) race in a similar fashion, as they are both on-pace runners, and with Irma Bale the only other competitor with any early speed, they could really turn it on by breaking clear mid-race. Allowing that scenario occurs, it’s doubtful whether either could fend-off the dour stayers, such as Karanji, Mission Complete and of course Irma Bale. But it’s still nice to be ahead of your rivals in a big race final. With the prospect of a trip to Hobart in the offing, it’s bound to be a fantastic NDC State Final at The Meadows on Saturday night. - Allan Hawkswell

Refund (less10%) nil pups LAST WEEKEND the coursing was at Melton for the running of the 2012 Derby and Oaks for our puppies. Whilst entries for the Derby were down on what we had hoped, there was no doubt about the quality of the 14 dog puppies that contested this year’s event. After completing two runs yesterday and then another on Sunday morning, we were left with just two, Al Forty Three off the red collar for Colin Dalton and Napalm Red for the Mousetrap Syndicate, trained by Brett Mackie from Tooradin. It was a fantastic final, very close, which is what we all love to see. Napalm Red proved too good in the run to line, taking top honours in this year’s Derby. It was a great training feat for Brett, as this is the only time he has ever had a runner in the Derby, so to win it made it extra special. There will be lots of smiling faces in Tooradin this week. In the Oaks it was a slightly different story, with 25 of our

state’s bitch puppies set to contest the running of the 2012 Oaks, which meant to win, the two finalists would have to complete five runs over the two days. The competition was great, and the girls did not leave anything on the track. By the afternoon tea break we were down to just two, Nova Noir on the red collar for Graham Glass and My Girl Scarlett off the white for Julie and Damien Belsham, who is trained by Dave Dawson of Crossover. Dave made no secret of the fact that this is what he had been chasing all season with this bitch. Well, Scarlett didn’t let her team down, as she ran a fantastic race in the final and came from behind to win, which was a fantastic effort, considering that there was a undecided course in her semi-final run that meant she had completed and win a re-run of that semi, so technically she completed ran 5¾ runs over the two days. The Derby Consolation was taken out by Not Gunnamatta for Bernie Ryan, with the runner-up,

Napalm Red, winner of the Melton Derby, is pictured with Frank Italiano and Brett Mackie.

Sundew Johnny for Leigh Mitchell another big effort for the young dogs. The Oaks Consolation No. 1 was won by Cyclone Ruby, trained by Steve Edgar, who proved too good on the day for Tony Grimmond’s Burberry. Oaks Consolation No. 2 saw Nicole Stanley head home to Portland with a winner when Nurse Akali was first past the post over Full Of Bubbles. The Western Saws All Aged Stake saw line honours go to Dragon Lord for Bob Colpoys, who was too good on the day for Jerry Maye’s Connemara Fire. We really hope to see you all at Lang Lang contesting this year’s TGS Waterloo Cup at the end of this month. The Maiden events were won by Baltic Typhoon, trained by Dean Crocker of Strathfieldsaye, Mr. Chow for Jason Formosa, Tarneit Flyer for Brian Menzel and last but not least Rage On Rondo for Col Dalton. That rounded-up another great weekend’s coursing and on all accounts it seemed that good fun as usual was had by all. This week it should be remembered that the meeting scheduled, to be run at the Victoria Coursing Club at Newstead on Sunday, August 12 has been transferred to Lang Lang. This will be a great opportunity for trainers to give their charges a look at the Lang Lang track before the running of this year’s main event, the 2012 Waterloo Cup. Entries for the VCC Trophy meeting, which will have events for All Aged, One Course Limit, Maidens and Puppies, will close this Wednesday, August 8 at 8.00pm. You can enter online at www. ncavictoria.org and follow the prompts to “Nominations”, or by phone with the NCA Secretary between 6.30pm and 8.00pm on Monday, August 6, Tuesday, August 7 and closing on Wednesday, August 8, 2012. POPULAR DOG MAN, Neil Thompson knows just what to expect when it comes to the Nationals. Way back in 1982 Neil won the National Sprint with his great bitch, Madonna Lee. But his youthful trainer, Darren Titmarsh, a relative newcomer to the industry, is just finding his way but could follow in Neil’s footsteps with Finn’s Express. Darren celebrated his birthday last week and the following day landed Finn’s Express a winner in a State Heat of the National Distance over 710 metres at Albion Park. She ran 42.41 when scoring by

QLD David Brasch two and a quarter lengths over early leader, Befitting, with five and a quarter lengths to Lay Down Teddy third. The daughter of Black Enforcer and Oriental Angel has an impressive 710 metres record, even though that was her first win over the distance.

Bruce and Jaunita Linnan with Tarlie’s Angel were delighted when their chaser made it into the Queensland State Final of the National Distance series, having scored in 42.56.

In five starts she has won once and been placed four times. Titmarsh, who refuses to say how old he turned last week, had his sister, Leisha on track to help him celebrate his birthday. “I told Leisha to keep backing her,” said Darren. “I’m not one to get over-confident but I really thought she could win tonight.” In recent times, Finn’s Express has suffered from a lack of 710 metres racing, as do most local stayers. She had finished powerfully the previous week when second to Mocha Shocker in the Presidents Cup. “She needed that run last week, and I was very confident she could win tonight,” said Darren. “And I believe there is more improvement left in her for next week.” “That will come just from having put together a couple of 710 metres races together in a row.” Finn’s Express has proved her worth since stepping up in distance. She has now won just six races in 59 starts but has run 23 placings. That is more indicative of the fact she has always needed a staying test to suit her best. Titmarsh said the bitch may have been a bit unlucky not to have finished closer than two lengths when second to Mocha Shocker in the Presidents Cup. Befitting is another who will improve with the run, as she had not started over 710 metres since June 7. She led clearly, showing all her old brilliance, but got tired coming to the home turn, and it was obvious Finn’s Express would pick her up in the straight. Befitting will be much harder to beat in the final. Neil Thompson, who won the National Sprint at the Gabba with Madonna Lee, bred and owns Finn’s Express.

Bruce’s Angel LAKE CLARENDON owner trainer, Bruce Linnan is never one to shirk a challenge. But even he reckoned he might have bitten off more than he could chew when he tossed Tarlie’s Angel into a Queensland heat of the National Distance at Albion Park last Thursday night. He headed to Albion Park just hoping that Tarlie’s Angel could make her way into the State Final. She did much more than that. The daughter of Collision and Suite Tahlia swept into the final as a heat winner, running 42.56 to score running away by a length and three quarters over Fashion Flyer, with a length and a quarter to third placed Hot Sunday. Big disappointment of the heat was Mocha Shocker, raging hot favourite at $1.60, who missed the start then got carted off the track at the first turn and from thereon was never a chance before finishing second last. Handler, Mike Chapman scratched his head in amazement at the run. But Bruce Linnan was overjoyed. “We were just hoping

Darren Titmarsh, pictured here with Barry Hanley, got a birthday present that will take some tossing after Finn's Express landed a heat of the National Distance series in 42.41 at Albion Park last week. she could make the final,” said Bruce, who bred the winner from former brilliant sprint bitch, Suite Tahlia. “Her mother never won beyond 431 metres at Ipswich.” But she did have a touch of class, making a Tweed Heads Galaxy final. Tarlie’s Angel was having only her second run over 710 metres. “We tossed her into a good race a while ago, but tonight we purposely wanted her in the State Heats,” he said. “She had her right box and we were always confident she would stay the distance.” The bitch had been in great 600m form at Albion Park and Ipswich early in July. She has now won six of her 22 starts and weighs-in at a tiny 24.5kgs.

Confidence everything TONY BRETT is forever thinking about what is best for his select team of greyhounds. He was right in that mode last Thursday night at Albion Park when multiple Group 1 winner, Glen Gallon lined up for a Queensland heat of the National Sprint over 520 metres. Brett watched as Glen Gallon was buffeted from pillar to post when seventh the week before in the Dapto Megastars. “I wanted him to get his confidence back as quickly as possible,” said Brett. That happened last Thursday night when scratchings reduced the heat field to just three. Glen Gallon relished the small field and a return to Albion Park when a brilliant 29.79 winner. He led through a 5.75 first section and burnt off his two rivals with an 11.47 middle section when winning by four and a quarter lengths over Bellagio Lad, with a length and three quarters to Spirited Flame third. Glen Gallon, three runs back, won the Group 1 Winter Cup in 29.86. He then headed to Dapto for the Megastars but was never out of trouble when finishing seventh behind Bye Bye Bucks. “He hit everything but the McDonalds store in the back straight,” said Tony. “Coming back to his home track was just what he needed.” Glen Gallon took his remarkable record to 20 wins and eight placings in 38 starts. He is twice a Group 1 winner at Albion Park.

HANSON SENOR burst back to his best and moved into yet another feature final when winning a heat. Hanson Senor (Give Me Five Hanson Charm) led throughout to win by two lengths over Tough As in a slick 30.18, with two and three quarter lengths to Master Brutus in third. It was his 17th victory in 36 starts, and 15th win at Albion Park. Hanson Senor has been disappointing at his previous two starts, finishing last and second last, but owner trainer, Geoff Allen said the dog had been carrying a few niggling injuries. “I gave him a couple of weeks off and he got over the problems, and here he is,” said Geoff. Hanson Senor has been one of the best local products for the past 12 months. He has already won a Young Guns and Flying Amy Classic, run second in a Young Guns, and been a finalist in several other features. CAKES AND PIES gave Hall of Fame trainer, Ron Ball three finalists in the state series when she won a heat. The daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Ultra Swift ran 30.17 to score by six lengths over Knocka Down, with a length to Aladdin’s Queen third. Cakes And Pies took her record to an impressive 12 wins and nine placings in 25 starts. Ball’s other finalists are Tough As and Bellagio Lad, who were both second in their heats. Cakes And Pies, a Young Guns winner at Albion Park two months ago, could have gone even faster than 30.17, according to Ball. “She cut across to the rail in the back straight and checked herself off Lacoste,” said Ball. “That could have cost her something.” Cakes And Pies is pint-sized, tipping the scales at just 24.9 kilograms, but she punches much above her weight. Cakes And Pies was the first of a winning treble for Ball. HER LITTERMATE, Cool Trick later won a 520 metres Fifth Grade in 30.49 by a length and a quarter over Our Don, with three quarters of a length to Never Tell flashing up late for third. RANDO’S ROCKET (Bombastic Shiraz - Witheren’s Girl) battled on gamely to win a 520 metres Fifth Grade in 30.42, scoring by a neck to the fast finishing Surf Mail, with two lengths to Craigie Air third.

IT MIGHT BE ‘flu season’, but it was Nationals fever that hit Angle Park last Thursday night with four State Heats of the 515 metres National Sprint and just one heat of the 731 metres National Distance being run. With plenty of class runners engaged, it was the ‘underdogs’ that dominated the heats, with no favourites able to salute. ANTONI BALE notched his 10th career win when successful in the first heat of the National Sprint Championship for trainer, Tony Rasmussen. Drawn box two and starting at $5.00, Antoni Bale jumped only fairly but pushed through on the rail to take the lead over Buckaringa Lad and So Spontaneous through the first turn. Leading by a length over Buckaringa Lad entering the back straight, Antoni Bale kicked clear to reach the

SA Paul Rehmann top turn with a three lengths advantage over So Spontaneous. Surging further ahead of So Spontaneous through the final bend, Antoni Bale coasted to the line under no pressure. The son of Return The King and Spiral Bale crossed the line three and a quarter lengths clear of So Spontaneous in 30.13, with the luckless Golden Monza taking third place. KOUBEK registered his third successive victory when he won heat two for trainer, Rebecca McAuleyFry.

Well supported into $5.00, Antoni Bale took out a SA heat of the National Sprint Championship at Angle Park, running 30.13 for Tony Rasmussen.

Sent to the boxes as a $6.50 chance when dressed in the check singlet, Koubek jumped well but was beaten for early pace, settling third on the rail behind early leader and race favourite, Aston Thomas. Pushing through to be second in the back straight, Koubek was looking dangerous as he reached the top turn only two lengths adrift of Aston Thomas. Still making ground through the final bend and straightening for home only a half length off the front, Koubek showed his customary strength and strode past Aston Thomas over the closing stages. The son of Miagi and Scrumptious scored by a length and a half to Aston Thomas in a new personal best and Best Of Night 30.04, with Emerley Striker third. BRIONY BALE caused a boilover in heat three when she upstaged her better fancied rivals to win for trainer, Lisa Rasmussen. Nicely drawn in one and starting at big odds of $21.00, Briony Bale began fast and showed good pace to hold the early lead over Mad Monza. Ahead by a couple of lengths over Just Chases along the back straight, Briony Bale wasn’t about to surender her hard won advantage and kicked hard to reach the top turn with her two lengths margin intact. Still holding a handy break over Just Chases through the final bend, Briony Bale finished full of running and drew away in the home straight. The daughter of Bit Chili and Dyna Beauty cruised past the post three and a half lengths clear of Mad

Monza in 30.31, while Just Chases tired into third place. Unfortunately for Mad Monza and his connections, he was found to be injured after the race and was withdrawn from the State Final, replaced by the fastest third placegetter from the heats. ASTON ODIN maintained his good form for trainer, Troy Murray when he won the final heat of the National Sprint Championship. Drawn out wide in box seven and starting at $3.80, Aston Odin jumped slowly then showed great field sense to weave his way through to second behind Rush Hour through the first turn. Trailing Rush Hour by two lengths entering the back straight, Aston Odin made good ground to be camped on the leader’s heels at the top turn. Switching wide and racing past Rush Hour through the final bend, Aston Odin had to dig deep to fendoff the strong finish of Point Two Over in the run to the judge. The beautifully bred son of Pure Octane and Miss Elly Mint won by three quarters of a length to Point Two Over in 30.12, with Rush Hour finishing a close third.

Lisa’s star boarder ABDON BALE maintained his perfect record over 731 metres when he won the only heat of the National Distance Championship for trainer, Lisa Rasmussen. A $3.70 chance drawn box four, Abdon Bale was away only fairly but accelerated quickly to settle down third behind the pacesetting Miss Woods through the first turn.

Taking over with a lap to run and working a length clear of Miss Woods passing the catching pen, Abdon Bale skipped away in the back straight to reach the top turn with a three lengths break. Still holding a handy break over Miss Woods through the final bend, and with Kalden Mayhem ($1.50 fav) in third place trying to make ground, Abdon Bale showed no signs of slowing. Holding his advantage over the closing stages, the son of Bit Chili and Dyna Beauty crossed the line over four lengths ahead of Miss Woods in a new personal best 43.28, with Kalden Mayhem a close third.

Banter breaks through ALLEN BANTER broke through for his first win on the track for trainer, Shaun Matcott when he won the Greyhound Adoption Program SA Mixed 3rd/4th Grade. Nicely drawn in box one and starting at $6.00, Allen Banter went down on his nose at boxrise but recovered quickly to hold third place through the first turn, where his kennelmate, Gaylah Bale showed the way. Making ground along the back straight, Allen Banter railed through to second at the top turn and set out after new leader, True Pal. Racing to the front rounding the final bend, Allen Banter kicked clear in the home straight, with Aunty Chopper running into second place. The son of Where’s Pedro and Daphne Bale saluted the judge three lengths clear of Aunty Chopper in 30.23, while True Pal wound up third..

FORMER Victorian greyhound, Shanlyn Peanut has taken a shine to Tasmania, with her wins at her most recent outings prompting trainer, Graeme Moate to predict big things for the daughter of Slater. Shanlyn Peanut was placed at her first two starts in Tasmania before breaking through for a win in a Grade 4 event over 461 metres, and in 26.16, the best time of the night on the Hobart circuit. She followed up with another impressive win last Thursday, this time at Invitation level, but it was the same result. Shanlyn Peanut began well from box three, and after a matching motors with Penny’s Angel, Magic Moss and Katsidis, she gained the upper hand turning for home and went on to score impressively from Magic Moss, with Penny’s Angel third. Unfortunately Shanlyn Peanut was not qualified to be nominated for the upcoming State Heats of the National Sprint series. “I’m not sure that this bitch would have fallen into the right criteria to qualify for the State Heats of the National Sprint series, but even if she had have done so, and based on her first two starts for me, I wouldn’t have nominated anyway,” Moate said. “She ran placings at her first two starts but her times weren’t anything flash, then all of a sudden she has taken

Tassie Peter Staples the next step and I am confident there is more improvement in her,” he said. Shanlyn Peanut won five races in Victoria before owner, Lynne Larsen sent her to Moate. “She had some good wins in Melbourne, including one over 600 metres at The Meadows, so she certainly knows how to gallop.” “She was unfortunate to win three non penalty races over there, and that has crucified her a bit here in Tassie.” “But now that she’s struck this type of form I think she will just go on with it,” Moate said. Larsen has been sending dogs to Moate on a regular basis, and he says it has been a revelation for his kennel. Lynne (Larsen) breeds a few litters each year, and some she sells and some she keeps, and I understand she intends sending most that she keeps to Tasmania to race in the future, so that’s a good thing,” Moate said.

Shanlyn Peanut is likely to head to Launceston for her next assignment and Moate is confident she will be as successful on the circle track as she is on the U-bend track in Hobart. “This bitch likes to get off fence a bit, so if she can begin in Launceston like she has here in Hobart then I expect her to be very competitive over the 515 metres trip, and even further,” he said.

Slick chick

CHICK COM has a trait of missing the start in her races, but her will to win and good track sense helped her score her first win in Tasmania last Thursday night. Chick Com began slowly from box two and had a wall of dogs ahead of her heading to the top turn. But she managed to weave a passage through to challenge at the top of the straight and then had to dig deep to fend-off the fast-finishing Larkhill Man over the concluding stages. The Brendan Pursell trained bitch was having only her second start in the state, and whilst the trainer is concerned about her tardy box manners, he still believes she has the potential to win more races. “This bitch can run, and she showed that tonight, but at the moment she is very tardy from the boxes and that usually means trouble,” Pursell said.

“Tonight she drove through and got in a winning position, but if she continues to be slowly away, more often that not she is going to get checks when trying to improve.” “With time she could improve her manners, and if she does then I reckon she has what it takes to go through her grades,” he said. Pursell is a bit more excited about her litter brother, Gatty Com (Vapour Whirl - Kirabilli Jessie), who has won his past four in succession and will take on the best at his next outing on Thursday night in a State Heat of the National Sprint Championship series. “Gatty Com is the opposite to Chick Com in that he has brilliant box manners and also great speed, so he gets his chance to show what he’s made of next week in the Sprint series heat,” Pursell said. “He will be well out of his grade in the National Sprint heat but he’s in top form, has great box manners and he’s quick early, so if all of those things come together next week, who knows what can happen,” he said. Chick Com and Gatty Com are owned and raced by Brett Gatt, who was introduced to Pursell by a friend of the family. “My wife’s (Lynne) cousin, Brad Burns recommended me to Brett (Gatt), and it’s gone from there and hopefully we can continue the partnership well into the future.” “I’ve got some nice dogs in the kennel, and whilst I won’t ever let it get too big, I’m keen to keep all the kennels I’ve got occupied,” he said.

On the market

Shanlyn Peanut defeats Magic Moss in Invitation at Hobart, recording Best Of Night 26.16 over 461 metres for owner, Lynne Larsen and trainer, Graeme Moate, who is happy to prepare the chasers from Victoria.

VETERAN TRAINER, Keith Nichols doesn’t mess about when it comes to moving his racing stock. After his promising young dog, Cosmic Lad notched his first win from only five starts in a Juvenile over 340 metres in Hobart last Thursday night, Nichols declared the son of Cosmic Rumble was “for sale”.

Chick Com with handler, Blake Pursell, had to dip into her resources before taking out a 461 metres Grade 4 at Tattersall’s Park last week, clocking 26.37. Cosmic Lad showed good early speed to vie for the lead to the home turn and then knuckled down to his task over the concluding stages, staving-off all challenges in the run to the line. “He has plenty of early speed, in fact he’s led I all of his races, so this short race tonight was his race for the taking,” Nichols said. Cosmic Lad is owned and raced by Pat Sofra, who has been sending dogs to Nichols for over three years, and with great success. “Pat (Sofra) is a pleasure to train for, and he is keen to turn the dogs over.” “All but one of his dogs that we’ve sold here in Tassie have won races, and surprisingly it has been the most expensive (Portico) that has yet to win a race.” “We’re asking $2500 for Cosmic Lad, and I’m sure at that price he’ll be sold sooner rather than later,” he said. Cosmic Lad, by Cosmic Rumble from Pretty Larkhill, is a good natured dog that Nichols says is a pleasure to have in the kennel.

THIS WEEK’S SA final of the National Sprint Championship looks to be a wide open affair after a night of upsets in last week’s heats. ASTON THOMAS won three in a row on the track for trainer, Ray Murray before finishing second, having been run down by Koubek in a heat in the fastest time of the night. A good beginner in a final field that lacks any real early pace, Aston Thomas looks to be great chance of finding the lead again from his draw of three in the final. A winner of 10 races on the track from 26 starts with a personal best time of 29.83, Aston Thomas is likely to start favourite in the final, and if he can pinch a break early he will take a power of beating. POINT TWO OVER won this race one year ago to go on a represent SA in the National Final at Albion Park, where he finished down the track after finding early trouble. Trained by Rob Harnas, Point Two Over has been regaining his form of old over the past month, and

SA Paul Rehmann despite finishing second to Aston Odin in a heat, he looks to have a good chance in an open field. A veteran chaser with 22 wins from 79 starts on the track, Point Two Over proved he can still run with a time of 29.75 here in late June and a repeat of that effort from box two in the final would in all likelihood win the race. ASTON ODIN missed the start in a heat last week but still managed to score an impressive victory over Point Two Over in 30.12. Trained by Troy Murray, he has eight wins on the track from just 14 starts with a 30.03 PB and has come up with box four in the final. A hit and miss beginner who

Aston Odin has drawn the four alley for Thursday night’s SA State Final of the NSC, having won a heat from Point Two Over in 30.12.

track, and with a personal best time of 43.22, Kalden Mayhem won’t give up his crown lightly and after drawing box one in the final, it should be a great contest. MISS WOODS finished second in last week’s heat for trainer, Gino Grgurovic and with box two in the final she’s drawn to find the early lead once again. A super honest chaser with good pace, Miss Woods will be trying her heart out again in the final but needs to pinch a break to hold off the big finish of Kalden Mayhem and overcome the pace of Abdon Bale. A winner of eight races from 22 starts over the track and distance, with a personal best time of 43.51, Miss Woods looks to be a great place chance in the final but needs some early luck to win. KALDEN PETRONI will give Troy Murray a double chance in the final after she finished fourth in the heat and has come up with box six in the final. A winner of seven races from 15 starts over the track and distance with a PB of 43.46, Kalden Petroni has struggled to show her best form over

Abdon Bale will be the tough nut to crack in the NDC State Final at Angle Park, having completed a hat-trick in 43.28 last week.

longest trip in recent times and will need to improve to trouble the favorites. ALIS BALE will give Lisa Rasmussen a double chance in the race but will need to improve on his sixth place in the heat. A strong performer over 643 metres at Gawler, Alis Bale has struggled to bring that form to Angle Park, with just one placing form four starts over the distance, whilst box seven in the final has done her no favours. JORDO’S PUSHBIKE won his first five starts over 731 metres but his form has tapered sharply over the past month and he finished last in the heat last week. Trained by John Gale, Jordo’s Pushbike has five wins from 10 starts over the track and distance with a personal best of 43.62, and if he could recapture that early form, would be a place chance from his draw of three. THEN QUOTED has placed at three of his five starts over the track and distance for trainer, Brian Kent, but that was in weaker company, and he found the going tough when finishing fifth in last week’s heat. Drawn box four for the final, Then Quoted will start at big odds but with a clear run he could surprise with a place. SPECIAL GEM must know every inch of the track after going over this distance 61 times for her two wins, and she did struggle in this company when placing seventh in the heat last week. Trained by Rebecca McAuleyFry, Special Gem has drawn box five in the final but a placing looks unlikely and she’ll start at big odds. Reserves for the final are Miss Lily Rose for Michele Famiglietti and Sizzling Cash for Colin Swain. - Paul Rehmann

The almost totally white chaser will sport the black vest this week in the SA State Final. up early, but if he can hold a forward position through the first turn he has some claims. BRIONY BALE won just her second race on the track when taking out a heat in 30.31 for trainer, Lisa Rasmussen, and will need to overcome box eight in the final. A good beginner, Briony Bale is likely to find the final a tough affair and would need to lead again to have any chance of finishing in the top three.

RUSH HOUR made her way into the final with a third place finish behind Aston Odin in a heat and has drawn box six for trainer, Bruce Lellmann. A solid performer with a couple of good wins at Gawler, Rush Hour is yet to win at Angle Park after 14 attempts and has done a good job just to make the final. Reserves for the race are Emerley Striker for Angela Modra and Golden Monza for George Cooper.

ABDON BALE made it three starts for three wins over 731 metres in last week’s SA National Distance Championship heat, and with the same eight runners lining up again in the final, trainer Lisa Rasmussen will be hoping he can keep his perfect record intact. A brilliant 43.58 winner on the track in heavy rain two weeks ago, Abdon Bale proved that effort was no fluke with a strong 43.28 win last week. A safe beginner with good pace and a solid finish, Abdon Bale likes to run in the middle of the track and his draw of box eight in the final only looks to further enhance his chances. KALDEN MAYHEM for trainer, Troy Murray won this race last year and went on to finish third in the National Distance Grand Final at Albion Park behind Dashing Corsair. The reigning SA Greyhound Of The Year and SA Distance Greyhound of the Year, Kalden Mayhem had five successive wins against his name before finishing third in last week’s heat and was coming off a three weeks break. A winner of 10 races from 14 starts over half-mile joyurney on the

shows great pace once he finds his balance, Aston Odin’s main worry is finding trouble from his middle draw early, but with a clear run he’s more than capable of taking the race. SO SPONTANEOUS will give Troy Murray a double chance in the race after he finished second to Antoni Bale from box one in a heat. A slow beginner who’s better suited over more distance, So Spontaneous has drawn box five in the final and will need some early luck to add to his record of one win from five starts on the track. KOUBEK ran the best time of the night with his 30.04 heat win last week for trainer, Rebecca McAuleyFry, and with three successive wins against his name, it’s hard to fault his form A dour type with wins over the 600 metres and 731 metres, Koubek like to work his way through the field and storm home over the closing stages. A winner eight times from 41 starts over the track and distance, Koubek has will sport the black vest in the final and his chances will depend on staying close enough to the leaders to mount a challenge over the closing stages. ANTONI BALE is best suited from a wide draw but his 30.13 win from box two in a heat was all class. Trained by Tony Rasmussen, he’s a winner of eight races from 24 starts on the track with a PB of 30.06, Antoni Bale with have to deal with the rails alley again in the final. A moderate beginner with good pace and a strong finish, Antoni Bale will need to avoid being swallowed-

MIATA RETURNED to racing in blistering style winning her heat of the WA National Distance Championship by over a second. The Paul Stuart trained champion has been absent from the track since mid June when she pulled up injured when fifth to He Knows Uno. On a track that leading trainers described as boggy, patchy and uneven, Miata went to the boxes a firm $1.20 favourite, with only Until Then, a winner of her past six, at a single figure quote. The favourite was away cleanly from box three and took full advantage of the clear running to accelerate to the front in the early going. Passing the post the first time Miata had spread-eagled the field, taking a six lengths break over Until Then and Dollstan Cruise. She maintained that margin through the catching pen, extending her break to nine lengths passing the release point. Miata left the back for the final time in 29.49, nearly five lengths off

Paul Stuart with the brilliant stayer, Miata, who won through to the WA State Distance Final with a very slick 41.58 Cannington victory.

WA Laurence Torpy her best split with an ever-growing lead. She continued to pull away from the field and greeted the judged 16 lengths ahead of Kalden Abubo, who edged out Dollstan Cruise for second prize. The winners time of 41.58 was only three and a half lengths outside her track record that was set on a much faster surface back in January. The red fawn daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird has now won 26 of her 31 outings, including all six at the track and distance. The rising three year-old has earned a touch under $320,000 for owners, Paul Stuart and Nicole Wheeler-Whye. The second heat of the WA Distance Championship was a race in two between Pedro's Finest and Spring Legacy. Pedro’s Finest was away well from the cherry and the John Iwanyk trained chaser was five lengths clear of Spring Legacy with a circuit to travel. Pedro’s Finest was still highballing and five lengths to the good of his nearest rival passing the release point. Spring Legacy closed in on the $1.70 elect mid-way through the final turn and turned for home within two lengths.

The John Carmody trained Spring Legacy continued to edge closer on the outside of Pedro’s Finest then finished the stronger to record a three quarters of a length victory in modest 42.58. It was the sixth win from 10 starts over the staying trip for the son of Bit Chili and She be Nimble. Miata has drawn box three in the final and will again be at unbackable odds after qualifying 15 lengths faster than her closest competitor. Spring Legacy should be fighting out the minor with Dollstan Cruise, who will be improved for his first attempt at the half-mile journey.

Irish Moss THERE WERE three heats of the WA National Sprint Championship and Hot Irish set the time standard in the opener. The Ben Abercrombie trained bitch was on the hunt for win number 22 and lined up behind the yellow number five vest as the $1.50 favourite. The daughter of Premier Fantasy and Lovey Craves was impeccable from the boxes, clocking a 5.66 opener to hold a length break over Moss Vale, who is getting back to his best for Linda Britton. Hot Irish railed brilliantly and went through the pen with a two lengths break over Moss Vale, with the field in Indian file. Moss Vale closed in to a length as they left the back in 18.86, with a further two lengths to City Rumble. Hot Irish extended on the bend and turned for home with a two lengths advantage and maintained that all the way to the line, bringing up her third successive win in 30.44.

Moss Vale backed-up strongly from his midweek victory to record a solid second, whilst third placed City Rumble also booked a place in the final. LINDA BRITTON played a strong hand in the second heat, with Uno Reltub ($1.40 fav) breaking to an early lead over kennelmate, Lucy’s Rose. The winner of 30 from 58 starts hugged the rail and emerged with a two lengthd break over Lucy’s Rose onto the back section. Lucy’s Rose, still only a 5th grader, closed in on the in-form favourite approaching the home straight but Uno Reltub held her at bay to win by a length in a moderate 30.70, seven lengths slower than his PB recorded a fortnight earlier. THE OTHER HEAT saw the dual Oaks winner, Deutronium well supported at $1.70 for mentor, John Iwanyk. The daughter of Made To Size led them out of the straight, three quarters of a length to the good of Gable Drum, who was railing in second. It as a race in four into the back, with thee chasers skittled on the bend. Deutronium held a length advantage over No Justice, who was taking closer order than in recent weeks as he sought to break a run of 11 outs. Gable Drum was three-wide, whilst Big Jo King was tagging onto the back with three lengths the total margin. The order was maintained through the bend before the Daryl Neilson prepared No Justice peeled off heels as they turned for home then levelled-up with Deutronium before saluting by a half length in 30.67.

Hot Irish, pictured with her mentor, Ben Abercrombie took out a WA National Sprint heat in 30.44 over 530 metres on the weekend. Gable Drum held Big Jo King for third, giving Britton four runners in the $18,000 WA National Sprint Championship final on Saturday night. The box draw was also favourable for the state’s leading trainer, with Moss Vale, Uno Reltub and Gable Drum taking the three inside boxes. The fastest qualifier, Hot Irish has drawn box seven and will have to be at her best to cross a field that’s blessed with early pace. However, at her best the Abercrombie trained bitch is all class and is my selection to beat the Britton trained duo of Uno Reltub and the 38kg giant, Moss Vale, who recorded his best Cannington time of 30.38 in Maiden class a year ago.

PUMPED UP ZARR scored an easy win in the Bring Your Club To Sandown Maiden Final over 515 metres. After a luckless debut second in the heats, the Kel Greenough trained youngster went to box one at $5.90 and was only reasonably away before quickly getting to second. Snow Charisma led them down to the first mark in 5.10, with Pumped Up Zarr a length back second, while from out wide Major League was third in front of Jive Magic. Pumped Up Zarr railed to the front entering the back straight and raced to the second peg in 19.10 with more than two lengths on Snow Charisma, while Major League was still in third possie. Pumped Up Zarr put the foot down and came right away over the final stages, bolting in by nine and three quarter lengths over Snow Charisma ($14.60), with Major League ($3.90) two and a half lengths further afield. Daddy Cool and Midnight Drama, owned by William Miller, stopped the clock at 29.59 to score his first win.

Gettin there GETTIN SLIZZARD finished best to take out heat one of the National Sprint Championship over 515 metres. Sent to box five at $16.10, the son of Collision and Shirl The Girl got there by a head over Sapporo ($4.30), with Odie For Now ($2.80 fav) two and three quarter lengths further afield. Gettin Slizzard recorded 29.66 to make it two wins in eight goes at the trip, as part of his seven wins in 25 starts overall. The black chaser, owned by Allan Lie, was the first leg of a winning double for trainer, Jeff Britton.

Meet another outstanding member of the Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale litter. Bagget Bale showed clever track sense to weave his way through the congested pack after a very slow start to score an impressive win over the 595 metres trip in 34.33. Handled by Tim Butt, the black chaser doesn’t have the early speed of his littermates, the unbeaten Barcia Bale and Desalle Bale, but does have a very big motor, hence the liking for the middle distance events at this early stage of his career.

Unbeatable: Hot youngster, Fabregas with trainer, David Hirst and owner, Paul Westerveld plus a big cheer squad after the 22 month-old puppy made it seven wins in a row at Sandown Park. Spearing across from the wide eight alley, he hit the first split in 5.05 before charging down the back straight to register 18.71, eventually hitting the line in 29.46. DEAN HIGGINBOTHAM owns Jordy Pordy, who completed the double for Jeff by running 29.65 to take out heat three of the National Sprint Championship over 515 metres. Coming from box two at $10.10, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and High Tide Honey saluted by a length over Ima Geisha Girl ($2.30 fav), with a half length to third placed Kevin Bale ($14.00). Jordy Pordy has won two of his 10 attempts at the trip, with this win taking his career tally to 10 firsts in 30 outings.

Can’t knocka him GOLDEN EASTER EGG winner, Don’t Knocka Him ran Best Of Night 29.30 to take out heat four of the National Sprint Championship over 515 metres. Wearing the blue vest at $4.10, the son of Knocka Norris and Surf Queen led all the way to defeat Mepunga Geordie ($14.90) by three and a quarter lengths, with Brenna Bale ($5.40) collecting third money, two and three quarter lengths away. Don’t Knocka Him ticked-up his first win at the trip at his third attempt, with his overall tally showing 17 wins in 37 starts. The blue brindle galloper, owned by Reg Kay, was the second leg of a winning double for trainer, Jason Thompson. The Seona Hood owned El Brooklyn was Jason’s first leg when she ran 29.55 to be successful in heat two of the National Sprint Championship over 515 metres. Drawn in box eight at $3.40, the daughter of El Galo and Dark Marne led throughout to beat Carol Allen ($10.20) by a length and three quarters, with Heston Bale ($2.90 fav) coming in third, two and a quarter lengths away. A winner of 16 of her 25 starts, El Brooklyn has won three of her six goes at the trip.

WA Derby winner and Peter Mosman Classic finalist, Jordy Pordy hugged the rails in his National Sprint heat win. Raced by Dean Higginbotham and trained by Jeff Britton, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and High Tide Honey held his ground racing into the first bend then proved too strong for Leeroy Rocker and hit the line in 29.66. lengths back. Dyna Morris posted 29.87 to make it seven wins in 20 tries at the trip, as part of his 20 wins in 81 starts overall. MATTHEW GODDEN owns Empire Mariah, who was leg two and recorded 42.24 at his first start at the trip to score in the Follow Us On Twitter Grade 5 over 715 metres. Rated at $3.80 out of box seven, the son of Surgeon and Awesome Mariah defeated Elite Chi Chi ($6.80) by two lengths, with Maccaboy ($7.00) four lengths further astern. Empire Mariah has now raced 28

times, with this being his sixth win. BAGGET BALE for Paul Wheeler completed the treble when he staged a big run to get home best and score in the twitter.com/ sandowndogs Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 595 metres. After lining up in box four as favourite at $2.50, the son of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale saluted by a length over Queen Of Cyprus ($6.70), with Bizarre Barbie ($4.30) a length and three quarters back in third spot. Bagget Bale has now won seven of his 28 starts, of which two from four are at the trip.

Dailly treble ANDREA DAILLY took the training honours for the night with a treble, and her first leg was the Brendan Wheeler owned Dyna Morris in heat six of the National Sprint Championship over 515 metres. Drawn in box four at $5.70, the son of Collision and Gold Rush Bale finished best to beat Comic Sans ($9.80) by a neck, with Blackalls Boss ($2.70 fav) tiring for third, two

Handler, Elaine Delios with the very honest and competitive Linden Magpie, who continues to race well at Sandown Park. The hard chasing son of Where’s Pedro and Avon Lyla May has now notched six wins from seven outings around the Springvale circuit.

First out, first home: El Brooklyn displayed excellent box manners, and once she stepped cleanly was never really threatened in posting a 29.55 victory. It was the 16th career win for the daughter of El Galo and Dark Marne.

IT WAS CHEERS all-round at UNiBET Gardens last Friday afternoon when local trainer, Ron Bell grabbed the prestigious Laurie Healion Memorial Maiden with Trapper Jet. The 20 months-old son of Bit Chili was trained to perfection by his jovial trainer, and celebrations went into the wee small hours with the $25,000 first prize. And the bookies also joined in for a shout with the 33kg chaser being a 20/1 pop. When the eight runners arrived at the 515 metres starting point, all eyes were on the red vested Lucky I’m Black from the Pringle kennel, who was the stand-out popular elect. At boxrise though, supporters of the favourite cringed when the inside drawn runner was a conspicuous last, whilst best to begin were Good Odds John from the three and Trapper Jet, who exited box five. Leaving the straight Good Odds John rolled clear of Trapper Jet, with Unexplained next and Lucky I’m Black had rolled along the fence to be mid-field. Good Odds John still led them off the back, however, Trapper Jet was looming large, and as they neared the corner the “Jet” took off and assumed control. Trapper Jet kicked clear down the running and was never threatened, racing past the judge a two and a half lengths ahad of Good Odds John in 29.91, with Lucky I’m Black working home stylishly into third place, a half head away. Trapper Jet (x Jamad) has now had three starts for two wins and one placing. Good Odds John (Magic Sprite x Assassin Journey), trained by Frank Hurst, has now three starts for one win and two placings, whilst Lucky I’m Black (Collision x Double Trouble) from three starts has notched a win and two placings. ANOTHER VICTORY for a local trainer was awarded when Warren Harper’s Dillinger led all the way in the

NSW Ron Arnold Schweppes final over 515 metres. Exiting box three, Dillinger bounced straight to the front with Fire Muldoon in the blue also well served, while the extreme drawn Rose Muldoon came down the outside. Leaving the straight the outside division couldn’t get across and Dillinger kicked away, with Fire Muldoon and Wicked Title doing the serious chasing as they entered the back. Dillinger was always travelling well up front with the two immediate chasers staying in touch. The trio had the race to themselves turning for home, but it was the front running Dillinger that pulled out plenty and scored by a length to Fire Muldoon in a good 29.90, with a length and a half to third placed Wicked Title. Dillinger, by Bit Chili out of Dallas Queen, has now produced five wins and three placings from 11 career starts. Fire Muldoon (Go Wild Teddy x Find The Answer), trained by John Edwards, has had 22 career starts for three wins and five plcings, whilst the Debra Spurgin trained Wicked Title (Big Daddy Cool x Solve The Title) after 15 starts has snared three wins and eight placings. RETURNING to the track where she was successful earlier this year in the National Futurity was the Rose Pringle trained Midnight Capers, who showed she is on song for this month's Black Top with a superb win in the 515 metres UNiBET Stake. After a moderate beginning from box seven, Midnight Capers showed her customary dash to be alongside the pink

Although Tee For Tilly was travelling well down the back, Midnight Capers always had her measure. Nearing the home corner Midnight Capers moved up and quickly put paid to Tee For Tilly.

He raced away over the concluding stages to down Tee For Tilly by four lengths in a very smart 29.69, with Fancy Dish Licka finishing third, a further three quarters of a length adrift. By Collision from Midnight Movie, Midnight Capers has secured $100,000 after 27 starts that have produced 13

wins and 13 placings. Tee For Tilly (Cosmic Rumble x Asteria Gain), trained by Merv Skinner, has had 31 career starts for six wins and nine placings, whilst Fancy Dish Licka (Kiowa Sweet Trey x Fast Liner) has gathered 13 wins and six placings from 29 career starts for trainer, Charmaine Roberts.

THE SPORTINGBET Super Stayers Series makes its long-awaited return in September with more than $32,000 in additional prizemoney up for grabs. Now in its second year, the Sportingbet Super Stayers Series is rapidly developing into one of the most popular and competitive staying events in Australian greyhound racing. This year’s series has been moved from winter to spring, with heats being staged from September 10 to November 17. Like last year's series - which was won by the Keith Pedrana trained Slick Lee - greyhounds will accumulate points when they participate in heats. The series will also see the return of Sullo’s Sling Bonus heats, which doubles the allocated points for all placings. At the completion of the Sportingbet Super Stayers Series the greyhound that has accumulated the highest number of points will receive a $10,000 bonus. In addition, the eight highest pointsscorers in the series will qualify for the Sportingbet Super Stayers Final at Wentworth Park over 720 metres on November 24 when they will battle it out for $22,500 in prizemoney. Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Chief Executive, Brent Hogan said the Sportingbet Super Stayers Series plays an important role in strengthening distance racing in NSW. “The return of the Sportingbet Super Stayers Series will again provide an incentive to trainers and owners to race their stayers in NSW through improved prizemoney and conditions,” Mr. Hogan said. “We appreciate Sportingbet Australia’s continued support of this concept and greyhound racing in NSW.” Sportingbet Australia CEO, Michael Sullivan said he was excited to once again be working with GRNSW.

“Betting on greyhounds continues to grow at Sportingbet Australia, with fixed odds betting proving extremely popular, and this deal gives us a much greater presence in the market.” “Sportingbet Australia was very happy with the success of last year’s series and look forward to seeing the best stayers in NSW battling it out again.” The first heat of the Sportingbet Super Stayers Series will take place at Bathurst on September 10. IT MAY HAVE BEEN the horses’ birthday in the thoroughbred world last Wednesday, being August 1, but we still found plenty to celebrate with a strong 10-event card at UNiBET Gardens in the world of greyhounds. One trainer who is known to celebrate long and hard when he prepares a winner is Wayne Vanderburg, and the corks would surely have been popping with a first-up win over the middle distance by Foxy Candy. Competing in the Forsythes Middle Distance Stake, Foxy Candy came up with the green vest, which she had donned in four of her past five starts. When the lids rose, best to begin was Miss Kimberley from box four, with the check runner, Rybenbrook Britt also well into stride, while Foxy Candy was only a little better than midfield. Settling down at the lap mark, the front running duo was being stalked by Foxy Candy, who had them covered heading to the back. Foxy Candy took over and shot clear, while there were swoopers from the back, Quasimo Thunder and Reeah, who were retrieving plenty of territory. Turning for home Foxy Candy had the measure of her rivals and was strong to the line, holding out the fast finishing Quasimo Thunder by one and a half lengths, completing the 600 metres journey in 35.22, with Reeah occupying third spot, a further four and a quarter lengths away. Foxy Candy, by Bit Chili from Fancy Candy, has had 27 career starts for five wins and 11 placings. Quasimo Thunder (Bit Chili x Quasimo Rose), trained by Colin Furner, after

17 starts has recorded two wins and nine placings, whilst the Mark Arncliffe trained Reeah (Velocette x Direct Lass) overall has had 28 starts with five wins and 11 placings. It was a popular win for local trainer, Eileen Robertson when Meagan Robbo got up in the last few strides to win another of the middle distance events. In this race we saw plenty of pace from the outside brigade, with She’s The Jazz and Vane Uno both smartly away from their outside draws. Settling down in the lead in the straight the first time it was She’s the Jazz and Vane Uno almost on level terms, while Meagan Robbo used the rails to advantage and slotted-in just off the pace. Down the back the order stayed the same and all the way to the home turn, where Meagan Robbo started to rein-in the front pair. Down the home running Meagan Robbo challenged She’s The Jazz and went home too powerfully, getting up to score by a neck in 35.41, while Vane Uno held down third spot, a further one and three quarters lengths away. Meagan Robbo, by Bit Chili out of Miss Sort, has now had 19 starts for three wins and 10 placings. Prepared by Darrell John, She’s The Jazz (Bit Chili x Valley Glory) from 32 career starts has produced six wins and eight placings, whilst Vane Uno (Primo Uno x Vee Girl Vane), trained by Kevin Crowfoot, has notched six wins and 14 placings from 44 career starts.

Successful back-up

PROVING HIS WIN at Wentworth Park just four days earlier was no fluke, the

Charlie Lamb trained Two Tree Hill continued on his winning way with another solid victory, having come from well back in the early part of proceedings to land the Betfair Stake. Over the 515 metres, Two Tree Hill was only fairly away from box four but was able to work into third spot as they hit the first corner. Taking up the lead role was Wooden Ball, who railed up after exiting the two alley, while Gebbie Blue worked forward from box six. Going down the back Wooden Ball led from Gebbie Blue, with Two Tree Hill making steady progress and looming large as they came down the side. There is so much to like about this 34kg chaser, and Two Tree Hill quickly collared the leader as heads turned for home. Pulling away over the concluding stages, Two Tree Hill went on to defeat Wooden Ball by one and three quarter lengths, with Pippa Tanga rattling home for third, a half head away. The winning time was 29.90, and this was the son of Bombastic Shiraz’s fourth win at the Newcastle venue. Two Tree Hill (x One Tree Hill) has now had 35 career starts for 12 wins and 14 placings. Wooden Ball (Primo Uno x Micro Lee), a veteran of 76 starts for trainer, Mark Arncliffe, to date the son of has had 13 wins with 28 placings, whilst Maureen Sharman’s Pippa Tanga (Bit Chili x Zesta Tanga) has raced on 45 occasions for nine wins and 12 placings. - Ron Arnold

Old adage says THERE’S an old adage in greyhound racing that says, “A good dog will always beat a good bitch.” Of course, over the years we’ve had some great bitches that were the best in the land during their time on the track. Still, when it comes to winning money, the ‘Top 10 Stakes Earners’ list shows only two bitches amongst eight dogs. That pair are Bogie Leigh, 7th with $488,355 and Cindeen Shelby 10th with $443,895. Of course in the Top 25 there are plenty more, such as Betty’s Angel (11th), Paua To Burn (13th), Miss Slick (17th), Tenthill Doll (18th), Flying Amy (21st) and Flashing Floods (23rd). But the adage, as I understand it, was that if you take the best male greyhound and put him against the best female greyhound, the male will win. It possibly came from a time when there was no circle racing, only coursing. But in the Maturity final, those who knew of that old adage may have thought that Barcia Bale would beat his sister, Desalle Bale. And he did! She got out first and he had the drop on her, and in all honesty, was never going to lose, although in the end his sibling really made him earn the victory.

Where does he rate? SO WHERE does Barcia Bale rate with other great youngsters we’ve had? It’s virtually impossible to line up chasers from one era to another, so all you are left with is opinion. I read that Graeme Bate rates Barcia Bale alongside Kantarn Bale, and you can’t argue with the man that put the polish on both. As it is, we all know what Kantarn Bale achieved, and as yet, we are only seeing Barcia Bale at the beginning of his career. I’d like to reserve my judgement until such time as Barcia Bale retires. Barcia Bale is yet to be beaten, and his scorecard shows a track record and a Group 1, both within just 10 starts, which is that’s pretty hard to toss.

And he must be a real chance to continue that formline in the upcoming National Sprint Championship, as he’ll tackle heats on his “home” track of Bulli. If anyone is superstitious about the number 13, then assuming Barcia Bale wins heat and final of the NSW NSC, then that’ll be what start the son of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale will be on in Hobart. Anyway, how many dogs have been unbeaten from the commencement of their careers and won 10 or more on the trot? You know, I wish someone had these records online somewhere, gee, how much easier would that be. Okay, here are three that I came up with, but if you can add to these, please do so. Promises Free (14), Ima Turner (13) and Satan’s Legend (11)… those wins include qualies. Oh, and for those who never saw Kantarn Bale, here’s a quick rundown of how he started his career. He was actually beaten at his first three starts, as he ran second in a heat, semi final and final of the Group 2 SA Derby. He then won six races on the trot, the last two of those being a heat and final of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. He was third in the Group 1 TOPGUN at his next start before winning his next three runs in the heat, semifinal and final of the Group 2 Silver Chief. So his first 13 starts yielded two Group wins and two Group placings, and just to break that up a bit, nine of those 13 initial efforts were in Group company.

Plenty of chances I HAD a good look at the runners in contention in the State Heats of the NSC and came to the conclusion that there are definitely more than 20 genuine chances. Last week I looked at the entries in detail for three states and Glen Gallon, Knocka Down, Metz Magic and Tough As all look really good chances in Queensland. Aston Thomas, Ity Bity Bamsy, Johnny Will and Kalden Aurora look top hopes in South Australia, whilst Barcia Bale, Billy The Sid, Desalle Bale and Oaks Road look good in NSW. I’m staying with Heston Bale in Victoria, along with David Bale, Fabregas and Ima Geisha Girl in the very tough Victorian line-up. Over in the West, Deutronium, Dodge Challenger, Moss Vale and Uno Reltub stack-up very well. I haven’t had a chance to see what the locals have on offer so far, but add them to the 20 already listed, and boy, are we in for a cracker.

Race in three THERE are plenty of people who’ll tell you that the National Distance Championship is a race in three. Obviously Miata is still the fa-

GAY MARRIAGE

JULIA GILLARD definitely is not a supporter, but Barack Obama, despite his personal objections, does not wish to deny the right to his citizens. Arnold Shwarzenegger doesn’t quite understand the question; he is quite happy to keep gay marriages between men and women! However, the issue will never be mainstream unless the world starts to run out of women.... or men! That would have to be a longshot, but in the farmyards of Australia the era of single sex populations is upon us. It is now possible to buy sex selected cattle semen, which is biologically separated into male and female offspring with an accuracy of around 70 to 80%. This is possible by using a machine called a flow cytometer. There is a slight difference in size between spermatozoa carrying Y chromosomes and those carrying the X chromosome. Of course the X chromosome is much larger because females are a more

complicated design. The sample to be separated is coated with a fluorescent dye, which binds to the DNA, and because there is more DNA in an X carrying spermatozoa, it will shine brighter and this allows the machine to differentiate between male and female cells. For the greyhound breeder this may sound like a technology worth investigating. Greyhound pups of the female variety are notoriously difficult to sell, and it would appear that they are also more difficult to guide to metropolitan success. For example, the Victorian National Sprint heats were contested by 47 greyhounds, of which 36 (76%) were male. Most metropolitan meetings have a male bias. Is the reason for this decline in the

voured runner, with Irma Bale hot in contention too. And then there’s He Knows Uno. The multiple Group 1 winner broke his Melbourne duck with a great win in the Group 2 AWM at The Meadows and looks ideally suited in this series, with the NSW heats being held at Bulli. I had to dive into his form to see if he’d ever raced there and found he’d only ever been there once. That was back in May 2011 in the Group 2 Ranvet Gold Cup in which he finished second to What Size over the 472 metres trip. The son of Primo Uno and Honeymoon’s Over is a seasoned performer, and I’m certain those who support him through this series will get a great run for their money. And as it stands, the three favoured chances have won in total $967,293 in prizemoney, consisting of $418,364 (He Knows Uno), $315,843 (Miata) and $233,086 (Irma Bale). There have been five Group 1 staying races run this year, they being the Sky Racing Galaxy (Miata), the Macro Meats Super Stayers (Thrilling Brat), the Association Cup (Miata), the Sandown Cup (Irma Bale) and the Macro Meats Gold Cup (He Knows Uno). An interesting statistic there is the fact that Miata contested the two races won by Irma Bale and He Knows Uno. And I think that when you weigh that up, this NDC could turn into one of the best ever.

Wildcard THE WILDCARD concept in greyhound racing for the Nationals gives the highest ranked greyhound that contests a State Final but fails to qualify, an entry into the Grand Final. We’ve actually seen a few very thrilling scenarios played out over that one. Anyhow, at this point we have no idea what dogs might need a ‘wildcard’ second chance, as that’s something that once all the State Final fields are finalised we’ll we be able to look at with some certainty. Sorry, I can’t give you the current list, as the July rankings have not been released as yet, but hopefully next week we can look at some of the possibilities.

Very long trip PETER PEARSON had a story in his “On The Line” column last week about trainers who travel long distances in their never-ending quest to win a race. These days, a lot of trainers who travel interstate take a plane, but there are still plenty who will drive. Mick Patterson just chalked-up 6,000 kilometres carting He Knows Uno from Iluka in northern NSW down to The Meadows and back twice for the Group 2 AWM Distance title. number of racing females purely due to lack of ability, or has there been an unwillingness on the part of trainers to invest time and effort into an animal that is a liability because of the fickle uncertainties of the breeding cycle and the unpopularity of the permitted drug, Ethyl Oestrenol, used for controlling the oestrous cycle? I would certainly suggest that the latter cause is more pertinent because history does show through my life in the sport that bitches can hold their own with dogs, as far as ability is concerned. Highly Blessed, Iceni Princess and Flying Amy were the match of any dog of their generation. The solution to restoring the balance and giving the female dogs an equal future with their male siblings is to restore their ability to compete continuously for a two year period, with a season preventative that does simply that, prevents the season and nothing else. Walnut Veterinary Clinic 84 Clarendon Street Cranbourne, 3977 (03) 5995 5255

As it turned out, he got 40 big ones for his effort with his star chaser, who took out the prestigious staying event. Obviously Mick doesn’t mind a stint at the wheel… and the dog, well he must enjoy the travelling too. Yes, there ain’t much point arranging to do the “miles” if the dog doesn’t like it, is there?

Gas guzzler CARS that were known as “gas guzzlers” were usually high-powered six cylinders or V8 engine vehicles. Of course, the other side of the coin was they were fast. Greyhound racing has Fabregas,,, and he’s fast. And he likes Sandown. So much so that at the time of writing, he’s never been beaten there. He has the perfect score of six from six against his name and he’s currently booked to contest the State Heats of the NSC. He kick-started his career there by winning a heat and final of a Maiden, running 29.89 and 29.73 respectively The son of Bombastic Shiraz and Wicked Witch then won a nonpenalty Sunday Grade 5 in 29.95 before contesting a normal Thursday night Grade 5, scoring in 29.90. To that point there was no indication that this bloke was anything more than a smart youngster. However, the next time he stepped out at Sandown, was in a Mixed 4th/5th Grade against a fair field and he demonstrated he is a dog with a really big future, returning a 29.33 Best Of Night win. He followed that up by taking on a Free For All that included Heston Bale in his comeback run and scored from the widest trap in 29.44 BON. Okay, so now he’s taking on the elite, but we already know he’s fast enough to beat the best sprinters racing, and no matter how he ends up in the Nationals, I’m sure the David Hirst trained chaser will make a big name for himself during the upcoming Spring Racing Carnival.

As it turned out LAST WEEK when I looked at the entries for the Victorian legs of the Nationals, I commented that the numbers of 49 for the Sprint and 17 for the Distance didn’t evenly divide by eight. As it turned out, the final acceptance for the Sprint was 47, which gave five heats of eight and one of seven. But all 17 stayed in contention for the Distance, and that gave us two heats of eight with the same reserve for both heats. Ideally, all stayers should have been given a run, but I tipped last week that there would be one that’d be a reserve. As I said, 17 is such a cow of a number entry-wise.

Happens all the time I GOT UP this morning (well, by now that’s last Thursday) and saw the headline, “0.01 of a second”. I quickly figured, as I downed my first coffee, that the story wasn’t about greyhound racing, but about the Olympic Games. And it was. James Magnussen, who is one of our best swimmers, had just been pipped and by the shortest margin given in the 100 metres freestyle. And yes, it is being really stiff, but we greyhound folk know all about 0.01 of a second, don’t we? Own, train or bet on dogs long enough and you’re bound to get done by that margin somewhere. Worse when you’re going for a decent quid. I’ve always maintained that if I were to train a dog that was destined to be runner-up in a Melbourne Cup that I’d rather lose by 10 lengths than a nose. How do others feel about that one?

World first A WORLD first is credited with occurring at Cowra dogs on July 14.

In all 10 races on the card, the winners were trained by ladies. Apparently, historians were sent scurrying for record books following the meeting, and by the Tuesday, seeing as no other trace of this happening had been found, it was hailed as a world record. I wish my memory was better, but I have this feeling that it is not a first, and I’m hoping there may be one of our readers that can recall it happening elsewhere. Failing that, and if no one else disputes it, then a world record it is. Well done either way!

Experts disagree I WAS READING something rather interesting online the other night and it was to do with greyhound experts. Firstly, I assume an expert is a person who correctly knows all there is needed to be known on their field of expertise. That is tongue-in-cheek, but the sentiment is that to be an expert you would expect the person to know the “correct” answers. So what happens when two experts disagree? Well, I reckon that means one of those people can’t really be an expert or worse, neither are right and therefore neither are experts. Anyway, one of these experts is in the field of veterinary medicine and he says there is no such thing as trapped nerves or pinched nerves, or similar. The other expert is a great muscleman, who disagrees with that train of thought. Oh, expert number 1 is NOT in Australia, whilst expert number 2 is. Do you want my expert opinion? I go with expert number 2, not because he’s an Aussie but because he’s right. And the reason he is right, well, he trained them too. Expert number 1, as far as I can detect, has not. I know of many trainers in this country who would also fully agree with my expert opinion.

Your Say “Wonder Why” with, “I don’t think the 12 races at Sandown and The Meadows is a good idea, and they also seem to be poorly patronised by punters.” “In fact, I thought they should have gone the other way, 10 races instead of 11... quality, not quantity!” You can get arguments for and against, but I can only assume that unless either noms fall off or no one bets on them at all, then we’re “stuck” with them. “Australia’s Best” stated, “I find it a bit odd that a lot of imported sires are doing as well as they are.” Tongue-in-cheek, I could say yeah, but look at all the Aussie blood in their veins and in some cases that’s very true, but outcrossing always seems to work wel. Mmight be a bit of both, eh? “Great Idea” with, “You mentioned some time ago about making the prizemoney bigger for the further they raced, and I see that there have been some staying races on in Victoria with really good money on offer, with quite a few dogs tackling them.” It’s actually very pleasing to see the response from trainers to these ‘Go Distance Racing’ events, and I’ve seen a couple of promising types in them, so I guess the incentive helps.

BROTHER AND SISTER training team, Glen and Amanda Ginn became the first kennel to win a double on the new Goulburn TAB circuit when Midnight Ivy and Wrapped Tight scored. Midnight Ivy charged through to lead at the first turn before winning a 350 metres Maiden heat, whilst Wrapped Tight came from last to take out a 5th Grade over the same trip. Each of the Ginns’ six greyhounds, from Cudal near Orange, is by Hesa Felon from their former handy racer, Miss Bliss. Just 20 months-old, their pups also include smart winners Vayetra and Major Movo, and two unraced but talented youngsters. Glen Ginn credits his success to fellow trainer, Les Whitton, of Orange. “Les has been checking my greyhounds for injuries for 20 years, and there is none better,” he said. ********** FRIENDSHIP formed when trainer, Steve Cleary and Brisbane owner breeder, Les Bein joined a 2011 greyhound racing tour of Ireland that culminated with Black Kate winning at her Wentworth Park debut on July 28.

Cleary, who has a 4ha complex at Woodstock, 25 kilometres from Cowra, now trains five of the renowned breeder’s greyhounds. “Black Kate had broken-in well but finished seventh in two Queensland starts, so Les asked me to try her,” Cleary explained. “I have a dozen in work, with 15 being pre-trained and another 20 ready to be educated.” “Best race dog I have trained in 43 years was 2002 National Derby winner, Medinah, but I have had several who were quicker.” ********** KENEALLY, who won 18 provincial races from 280 metres to 400 metres for trainer, Charlie Galea, has been retired after dropping a hind leg muscle. She was run down in her first few starts, so original owner, Ray Hadley, who wanted a greyhound capable of winning over 520 metres at Wenty Park, sold Keneally. “I had not trained for 20 years until Keneally came along,” Galea said this week. For the past two months Galea

has been kept busy helping to care for top notch stayer, Miss Nicole, whose trainer, John Cassar is seriously ill. Miss Nicole was handled by Galea and part-owner, Ray Hancock, when she scored her fourth Wentworth Park win on July 28. ********** SUCCESSFUL Moonbi trainer, Barry Evans was especially thrilled to win a double for owner, John Thompson at Wentworth Park recently. They combined to win with At The Grind and Little Ed, with Evans pointing out that Thompson, a Tamworth engineer, had constructed his kennels and greyhound walking machine. At The Grind and Little Ed are sons of Be My Girl, which Evans recently sold for $10,000. “My wife, Roz and I have so many dogs we had to make room for some young ones coming through,” Evans said. Hunter Valley trainer and breeder, Wayne Vanderburg, who bought Be My Girl, is delighted with his acquisition. “A fortnight after the sale she came in season and was mated with Collision, so with pups on the way she is a bargain.”

MINISTER for Racing, Denis Napthine congratulated Country Fire Authority (CFA) volunteers as they graduated from the Darley Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Leadership Scholarship Program at Darley Australasia’s thoroughbred stud in Seymour. Dr. Napthine said the scholarship program was made possible through the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) Volunteer Promotion and Development Fund, which was established by the collaborative support of international racehorse breeding organisation, Darley, Racing Victoria and the Victoria Racing Club (VRC). “This course provides graduates with a nationally recognised certificate in frontline management, which will directly benefit their future careers and their roles as CFA volunteers,” Dr. Napthine said. “Through the program, graduates have developed skills in leadership, decision making,

planning, team effectiveness, presentation, project management, community engagement and safety and risk management skills,” Dr. Napthine said. Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Chief Executive Officer. Andrew Ford said the partnerships behind the scholarship program will be making a difference for generations to come. “The Darley VFBV Volunteer L e a d e rs h i p P ro gr a m i s an investment in the professionalism of volunteer leaders that will benefit VFBV, CFA, the participants’ own careers and the communities they protect as CFA volunteers,” Mr. Ford said. “More volunteers will be offered a place in 2013, and we intend to take the scholarship program into the future. with hundreds to be trained over the coming years, influencing a generation of Victorians.” Dr. Napthine said racing played a key role in regional and rural Victoria, employing thousands of

people delivering millions of dollars into local communities. “ I t i s f a nt as t i c t o s e e internationally successful racing and breeding organisations such as Darley continue this positive relationship with country Victoria by supporting the hard-working and dedicated volunteers, who are crucial to their local communities,” Dr. Napthine said. “The Victorian Coalition Government supports the state’s 9 0 ,0 0 0 e m e r g en c y s e r v i c es volunteers, who are fundamental to Victoria’s ability to prepare and respond to emergencies.” “ W e h a v e al l o c at ed a n additional $57 million to emergency services in the 2012/2013 Budget, including $22.9 million to build or upgrade rural fire stations across the state. Direct investment in our Country Fire Authority volunteer leaders of the future will bring benefits that will last a lifetime,” Dr. Napthine said.

GEELONG GRC’s annual Good Friday appeal looks like being moved to a different location. Seems that the powers that be at the Royal Children’s Hospital want to get closer to the centre of Catland and intend to use the famous waterfront pier to host next year’s appeal. Not sure how the devoted Beckley Park administration has taken the snub, but those hard working Sleepy Hollow volunteers can contact the RCH to offer their services again.

Australia’s leading owner, breeder and rearer, Paul Wheeler is right behind moves to push for a greater share of distribution being returned to New South Wales greyhound participants.

Wheeler stands firm and united LEVITHIAN breeder and owner, Paul Wheeler was adamant about his feelings on the proposed strike in his home state. “I support them 100%” “I can’t tell my trainers to boycott the TAB meetings, but I’ll ask every one of them not to race.” “I’ve also asked Graeme Bate and the Daillys to do likewise and not race in NSW during this time, and the smaller Victorian kennels that race my stock will get the same message.” “We’ve lost $140M in revenue since that infamous agreement has been signed.” “We need to be unified and show solidarity in this important issue.” “But let’s all concentrate on the one issue, and that’s distribution and nothing else.” “I don’t agree with the other issues that are being bandied about and are on the proposed agenda.” “Many years ago this issue came up when I was a member of the Board, and I disagreed with the decision then and still do.” That was one of the major reasons I resigned my position.” “We’re getting screwed with distribution and we deserve a better cut.” “We’re entitled to receive more than what we’re holding and it’s much better than 13%”

What odds THOSE readers who majored in mathematics, particularly percentages, have a guesstimate on the odds

I ran up the rear of a car this morning, the start of a really BAD day. The driver got out of the other car and he was a DWARF. He looked up at me and said, “I’m NOT happy”. So I said, “Well which one ARE you then?”

and appreciated a much needed break from the rigors of racing. And the trainer had the good sense to follow Mr. Cummings’ creed.

Geelong’s Beckley Park. Strangely, GRV Stewards grilled the young Devon Meadows trainer over a perceived improvement of form for this brindle daughter of Slater and Shanlyn Supreme when she saluted at Shepparton on July 30. Now during a four defeat stint after the Geelong =BON win on April 20, the handy but not overraced chaser finished 7th, 7th, 7th and 8th . Inexperienced punters might declare that she had lost form and gone off the boil. Far from it. In those four starts she met Dyna Tron in a Warrnambool Cup heat. Found NSW’s It’s A Blur too good at Sandown Park in a heat of the Sapphire Classic in which the winner ran 29.44. Then encountered the powerful Bubba’s Dream at Warragul where the strong winner, who made the Shepparton Cup final, scored in BON 25.73. Crystal’s Voice then ran into Byrnne Bale at The Meadows. Completely outclassed in all four starts. Now her competent trainer wants to try and get her confidence back and after a six weeks spell, heads to Shepparton, where she’s drawn in a Grade 5 event over 450 metres. Six of her ordinary rivals in this race had managed just four wins between them from their past 48 starts. The other opponent has scored just twice at it’s past eight outings, once at The Meadows in 30.16, and at Sandown Park in 30.13. GRV’s Watchdog form analyst had her as a $5.00 chance and rated her their fourth pick in the race. NGF’s assessment placed her slightly higher as our third pick and quoted her as a $5.50 chance. Crystal’s Choice drew the five alley, started at $5.40 and led all the way, scoring by six and a half lengths in a BON 25.38, a time that was comparable to her ability. How GRV’s enforcers ranked the win as an “Improved Performance” stumps me. They spoke to the trainer of Crystal’s Voice, Mt. T. Iwanyk regarding the greyhound’s improved performance this evening. “Mr. Iwanyk stated that the greyhound had been trialling fair and had previously suffered interference in races, but with a clear run tonight the greyhound was able to perform to its ability.” Stewards noted his explanation and directed that samples be taken. I was going to suggest that maybe the Stewards should visit the form department at Chetwynd Street, and get their counterparts to explain how to read form, but that would be folly considering the events that have taken place over the past year. Put simply, Crystal’s Voice dropped in grade, plummeted in class

MICK PATTERSON never has to worry about having a catcher for his champion stayer, He Knows Uno. Callum “The Shadow” Anderson is besotted with the multiple Group winner and travels all over the country to watch his favourite greyhound race against the best. Whether it’s an eight hour round trip to Grafton, or catching a flight to Melbourne, Callum is trackside whenever He Knows Uno races. The captivated young 21 year-old even has his own “He Knows Uno” T-shirt that he proudly displayed in the members dining room at The Meadows on AWM Distance final night. on the following happening. Aden Jaya, a former Queensland speedster, has drawn five red boxes in succession. He went around again at Cranbourne on Monday, July 30 in the tenth event over 311 metres. Amazingly, in his 48 starts to date he has drawn the coveted cherry alley 16 times. That’s basically a red box every third start. Hasn’t helped him though, as only two of his seven wins have been from the red box. However, his latest effort at Cranbourne on July 30 saw him improve that strike rate and he now has won three times from 16 red exits I reckon the odds of five reds in a row are about 32766/1. Many years ago, Lemme Go Patchy managed to exit the red alley in seven consecutive outings, and to my memory I’ve yet to see that unusual and rare feat repeated until Aden Jaya’s latest stint.

New time at Bulli FORMER dual Victorian track record holder, Clair Maude has left her mark on her offspring. The daughter of Hallucinate and I’ll Get By, raced by Matthew Duncan and trained by Jason Thompson, held the Ballarat 550 metres and Meadows 600 metres benchmark during her 49 start career. Injured at The Meadows in mid July 2008, the hard chaser was sent to Primo Uno and her resultant litter included the brilliant Exclusive One, who established a track record at Bulli on July 30. Raced and trained by David Righetti, Exclusive One has managed to string together seven consecutive wins, and apart from the Bulli 25.87 performance over 472 metres, also happens to share the Maitland 450 metres record with Barcia Bale. That’s putting his potential into perspective. Barcia Bale, at the time of writing has won 10 on the trot, and Exclusive One has seven in a row. These two brilliant sprinters are surely to clash some time this year and I’m reluctant to predict the outcome. Only to say that it will be a promoters dream.

Freshen up MARVELLOUS how a change of scenery, a short break and a significant drop in class can be beneficial to a greyhound, or for that matter any racing animal As legendary thoroughbred trainer, Bart Cummings often says, “Keep yourself in the best company and your horses in the worst.” Take the case of the Troy Iwaynk trained Crystal’s Voice, who back in April posted a flying 25.06 BON win at Warrnambool, then buttered-up next start with an =BON victory at

fascination with Patterson’s champ is infectious, as those in his presence on this night were impressed with his enthusiasm and love for the topline chaser. This bloke is cut from a different cloth compared to today’s youth. No night clubs, late nights or even a girlfriend, he’s only interested in the dogs. Callum has even got involved with the ownership of our breed, purchasing a young Velocette pup that’s now 15 months of age that he handled at Grafton recently. This courteous Gen Y youngster is a credit to his family and no doubt Patterson’s humility has rubbed off on him. He has no sky high aspirations of his own pup but is prepared to listen and absorb the words of wisdom given by his mentor. I hope it isn’t too long before his own youngster salutes, as he’s a monty to be involved in the sport for many years to come.

He knows Mick Patterson’s great stayer is the best in the land. Callum “The Shadow” Anderson travels all over Australia to “catch” Group 1 winner, He Knows Uno. National Greyhound Form, Thursday, August 9th, 2012 – Page 57

IN New South Wales, the country track of Goulburn has attained permanent TAB status. I enjoyed watching their first TAB and Sky covered meeting last Tuesday, because it’s such a spacious track. They have the traditional 457 metres sprint distance and it brought back memories of the former Parklands track on the Gold Coast. I guess most south-east Queenslanders watching Goulburn would have not only been reminded of the Gold Coast, but again be lamenting the lack of a replacement track five years after its closure was announced. Research and talks are ongoing at control body Racing Queensland. A new possibility is on the horizon and that’s a greyhound track at Gatton. Lots of trainers are based in the Lockyer and Brisbane Valley area, which is close to Gatton, and would no doubt be rapt to have a new track so close to them. I find the Gatton idea to be quite bizarre for a few reasons. There is a stated desire to move greyhounds from Albion Park. But if we end up with Gatton and Ipswich as our two south-east Queensland TAB venues, there will be no track in the Brisbane metropolitan area, or anywhere near it. Also, the proposed site for a greyhound track at Gatton is apparently at the town’s Showgrounds. Whatever happened to the idea of a stand-alone greyhound owned and controlled facility, getting away from landlords such as Show societies? A ‘greyhounds only’ complex is what was proposed at Logan by the now defunct Greyhound Racing Authority a few years ago. RQL says Logan isn’t out of the running as yet. But building a track there, starting from scratch on the former rub-

CONOR FAHY was quick off the mark in the first session of the Ladbrokes Derby with Tyrur Monica and Tyrur Justin giving him a double in the first three heats. However, the big talking points of the opening session were the performances of Droopys Jet and Camas Crash, as they scored brilliant victories in the manner of dogs with a very big part to play in this classic. In the opening round the Conor Fahy trained Tyrur Monica (Lughill Lord x Lughill Emily) landed the first blow in the Ladbrokes Derby when storming home to win in determined fashion. PJ Fahy’s talented bitch came away racing to lead early, but she found herself in second spot after taking a bump on the turn when just avoiding an opening bend pile-up that saw Minefield and Lolos Joe bowled over. Lahern Dancer forced his way through on the fence to lead, but he was always under serious pressure as the strong running Tyrur Monica stalked him down the far side. Monica made her move between the last two bends and struck the front as they turned for home. Once doing so, she motored up the home straight to record a comfortable three and a half lengths victory in 30.12, with Laharn Dancer just holding Fairway Fusion by a short head for second. In the next heat the Owen McKenna trained Camas (Head Bound x Accelerate) was the favourite but he didn’t come away from traps too well, as Lisnakill Jack broke fast from four and led up from Danmar Benny, with Camas in third. Danmar Benny slipped through into the lead on the opening bend with Camas going second on the outside. Down the back Camas closed the gap relentlessly and was on terms into the bottom bends. It wasn’t until the run-in that Camas hit the front, but he ran on wide and fast to open a length and a half winning margin over Danmar Benny in 29.86. It was then four lengths to Slick Seattle that ran on strongly from the rear to finish third. CONOR FAHY completed a heat double when Tyrur Justin (Premier Fantasy x Cabra Midget) got the better of a very closely contested race. Justin, a star puppy last season, hadn’t found that level of form this year and was challenged for favouritism by Jimmy Boy. It was Tyrur Justin that broke fastest and

QLD Paul Dolan bish dump, might be too costly and too hard, and RQL says it will make a decision on Logan by this Christmas. There’s a school of thought that says – why does it matter where a new ‘one turn’ track is situated? Nowadays racing is all for television and TAB coverage, and that’s very true. But there’s also the belief that a ‘stand-alone’ facility, similar to The Meadows, would work very well. That could be the case at Logan.

How good is that

ON THE SUBJECT of Goulburn’s 457 metres distance, if we ever get a ‘one turn’ track in south-east Queensland, I hope the sprint distance is 457 metres. Not 456 or 458 or similar. New tracks like Warragul and Geelong have 460 metres. Hobart’s sprint is 461 metres. To me, the sport’s classic sprint distance has always been 457 metres (500 yards). It might sound like a picky thing, but is it too hard to stick with that when a new track is constructed?

Absolute garbage

I ALWAYS THOUGHT Fantasyland was situated at the famous theme park at Anaheim in the United States. That’s Disneyland of course. But it seems we have our own version of Fantasyland right here in sunny Queensland. The Gold Coast Bulletin newspaper

led up from Jimmy Boy and Krelco. Jimmy Boy was a clear second heading into the back and he motored up to challenge Tyrur Justin on the third bend. By the fourth he was disputing the lead but then faded on the run-in. Tyrur kicked again but was quickly challenged by the reserve, Sawdust Terry, and in a driving finish held on for a neck verdict in 30.14, with Krelco three parts of a length back in third. IN HEAT FOUR, Larry Dunne’s Climb A Tree (Honcho Classic x Catunda Serena) came into the inside as reserve for Lady Blackpool and gladly accepted the invitation by springing a surprise, but a thoroughly deserved one. Climb A Tree flashed out of the inside box and led up from the favourite, Robbiesgoneagain. Into the back Climb A Tree had a few lengths in hand over Robbiesgoneagain, with Tyrur Thomas now moving into third. Nothing could make any impression on Climb A Tree to the bottom bends, where Tyrur Thomas briefly moved second. However, Climb A Tree raced on independently to win by three and a half lengths from Robbiesgoneagain, with Tyrur Thomas a half length third.

Jet propelled

FRASER BLACK’S Droopys Jet (Slip The Lark x Droopys Mo) certainly brought the classic to life with an outstanding performance in Heat 5, as he flew from traps and led all the way in a brilliant 29.52. His price varied between 2/5 and 1/3, but it was 20/1 bar him as he raced around the first bend with a nice lead over Allen Master. From thereon it was exhibition stuff, as he pulled further and further ahead, and all eyes were concentrated on the clock as he crossed the line a seven lengths winner. The time was a brilliant 29.52. Allen Master ran a good race in second and he had three and a half lengths to spare over Ruthless Man. LAST WEEK we eulogised over the performance of Camas Crash after he had clocked 28.15 for the 525 yards. Well, Rachel Wheeler’s son of Crash and Marys Opel produced another stunning per-

last week carried a story that there is growing support for a greyhound track to be installed inside the Gold Coast Turf Club’s thoroughbred track, which is at Bundall, near Surfer’s Paradise. The writer went on to say that greyhound races could be run as joint meetings with the thoroughbreds, thereby creating increased interest and betting turnover. The Gold Coast Racecourse precinct has around 600 horses in work. Can you imagine the turmoil if greyhounds moved into the area? As for installing a greyhound track on the infield of the thoroughbred track, a large lake would have to be filled in. And a building from where horse trainers watch their horses work would have to be removed. The proposal is just plain fantasy. I’m still somewhat puzzled as to why greyhound racing needs to move from Albion Park to Logan, Gatton or anywhere. Yes, the facilities for racegoers at Albion Park are poor and outdated, but greyhound racing has lived there with the harness code since 1993. Put in a one-turn greyhound track and build a modest but comfortable facility, something like a clubhouse for those attending, and the venue would be more than adequate for our code.

RJ – super sprinter! WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE memory of the National Championships? I’ve attended more than I have missed over the past 25 years and have been lucky enough to witness some stunning performances. The one that stands out is the 1998 National Sprint Championship held at Cannington in Perth. The winner was super sprinter of that

formance when winning the final heat of the night in 29.56. He was actually led to the bend by Toms Brett, with Droopys Cain losing ground after a reasonable start, and the latter had it all to do entering the back as he was back in fourth place. Entering the back Camas Crash was already piling it on, and he just left his rivals for dead to win by seven lengths in 29.56. Droopys Cain finished with his usual flourish to take second, a length in front of Tinas Nova.

Big Mike stars

IN A NIGHT of sensations at Shelbourne on Thursday, with a series of spectacular runs in the second session of the Ladbrokes Irish Derby second round, the shining star of them all was the remarkable veteran, Tyrur Big Mike, as he clocked 29.51 and provided Conor and PJ Fahy with their fourth heat winner so far in the classic. Dave Lonergan’s Dragon Shield (Cabra Cool x Dragon Crash) made a winning start to his Derby campaign in Heat 7, although he had to dig deep to contain the late charge of Airforce Frankie. The decisive point in the contest came in the race to the turn as Dragon Shield held off the early challenge of Barefoot Allstar. Once doing so, the Pat Buckley trained Dragon Shield always had the measure of the Scottish Derby winner. Instead, Airforce Frankie emerged as the main threat. The latter flew down the back straight to close on the leaders, and whilst he had to ease his stride slightly at the third turn after finding little room, he still managed to launch a challenge on the run in. Dragon Shield had done enough, however, and dug deep to repel the advancing Airforce Frankie by a neck in 29.95, while Barefoot Allstar was a further length and a half back in third. HAVING GONE agonisingly close in both the Oaks and Dundalk International, Cabra Millie is certainly entitled to a big prize, and she couldn’t have made a better start to her Derby challenge as she became the fastest bitch to cover the 550 yards trip at Shelbourne Park when posting 29.60. The Graham Holland trained daughter of Westmead Hawk and Cabra Dancer was one of the first to show at traps, and once heading rank outsider, Ferdia Oscar before the turn, she was never going to be headed.

Above is the way most people would recognise the old Parklands complex in its heyday. Pictured below is the latest version of the greyhound track, with excavators and cranes changing the face of the area to accommodate the Gold Coast University Hospital.

time, Rapid Journey. From box six, he gave away a lengthy start to a classy field that included absolute top class sprinters of the time, Faithful Hawk, Hotshot and Reggemite. As the field moved off the back straight with about 200 metres to run, Rapid Journey looked no hope. He was still back in about sixth placing. But he weaved through the field, as if with a jockey on his back, and stormed through the pack to win.

In contrast, the warm favourite, Razldazl Bugatti missed the kick completely and was lucky to eventually qualify in fourth. This was all about Cabra Millie, however, and she dominated throughout to run out a thoroughly convincing five lengths scorer over Newlawn Tock, who ran well to grab second, a half length ahead of Ferdia Oscar. EARLY SPEED is clearly Confident Rankin’s most potent weapon, and he produced yet another professional effort to run out a very comfortable winner of Heat 9. The Owen McKenna trained star faced a potentially tricky draw in four, but made light work of his task after a slick exit. Once moving to the front before the turn, the Jeremiah Kerins owned speedster ran a fantastic bend to increase his lead over the fast starting Tyrur Willyjoe into the back straight. The latter tried his hardest to stay in touch, but Confident Rankin (Premier Fantasy x Swift Rush) was at his imperious best as he emerged a facile two and a half lengths victor in 29.70. Tyrur Willyjoe took second spot, three and a half lengths clear of Hillcroft Joe in third. DESPITE what was billed as a nightmare draw in trap five, the tight railing Tyrur Sugar Ray produced a wonderful effort to run out a very impressive winner of Heat 10. Starting far better than he had in recent outings, PJ Fahy’s powerful galloper disputed the early lead with the favourite, Cuil Cougar. Cuil Cougar moved to the front on the turn, but the writing was on the wall for his supporters as Tyrur Sugar Ray was simply too close for comfort. Once straightening up into the back straight, the Conor Fahy trained Tyrur Sugar Ray (Top Honcho x Maireads Fantasy) moved through the gears to shoot past the leader on the inside rail at the third turn. From thereon he maintained a powerful gallop all the way to the line, winning by an extending two and a half lengths from Cuil Cougar in 29.65, with Barefoot Duke two lengths back in third.

Jayfkay exits

THE SHOCK of the classic to date came in this heat when Razldazl Jayfkay was slowly into stride and paid the ultimate penalty. When he was involved in trouble on the first bend as Star Head was pushed wide, his problems were accentuated and he failed to recover. Meanwhile the Fraser Black trained Mays Milan (Ace Hi Rumble x Magpie Tango), who

Brilliant front running winners of the National Sprint like Flying Amy and Knocka Norris capture plenty of attention with their dazzling early speed. But the manner in which Rapid Journey achieved his win from so far back in the field is still as good a run as I‘ve ever seen.

had been the subject of a sizeable bet at 6/1, flew from the four box and led up from Mines A Pint and Star Head. Down the back it was still Mays Milan at the head of affairs but Tyrur Micko had now moved second ahead of Clydal Spirit. Nothing ever looked like getting to Mays Milan and he raced home a two and a half lengths winner from Clydal Spirit in 29.83, with Tyrur Micko a head away third. ROCKCHASE BULLET and Broadstrand Lad were the market leaders for this one, but it was the Marie Gilbert trained Dusseldorf (Head Bound x Bluetoon Megan) that flew to the corner to lead around from Stage Gold Gary and Broadstrand Lad. Dusseldorf quickly went four lengths clear, and in all truth never looked like being troubled. Broadstrand Lad moved second around the bottom, but it was Dusseldorf home and hosed by four and a half lengths in 29.89, with Stage Gold Gary a length fourth. Favourite, Rockchase Bullet qualified in fourth. IT HAD BEEN a bad night so far for Dolores Ruth, but Razldazl Rioga was expected to rectify matters somewhat in this heat, and things looked good as he broke fast and led up from Puddens Lad. He led by a few lengths into the back but then the race changed quite dramatically. The David Hunt owned and trained English raider, Sawpit Sensation (Head Bound x No Joke Sherry) is renowned for his pace from the second bend and he went into overdrive as he raced into second and then took Razldazl Rioga between the bottom bends. Sawpit flew up the straight to win by two and a half lengths from the strong finishing Airforce Diva in 29.69, with Razldazl Rioga a similar distance third. WELL INTO his fifth year but still one of the fastest greyhounds in training, Tyrur Big Mike (Brett Lee x Tyrur Sensation) proved himself a real phenomenon as he gave an outstanding display of pace and power in winning Heat 14 in 29.51. The story of the race is very easily told. Big Mike flew out of three, led by almost three lengths into the bend from Laughil Billy. He ran wide here but drew clear again into the third bend. Despite drifting very wide as usual off the final bend, he powered up the straight to win by two lengths from Laughil Billy, with Razldazl Dmagio six and a half lengths third.

Bewdy Baz

The Meadows August 1

GREAT to see TOPGUN, Silver Chief and Silver Bullet champ, Regal Thyme produce another winner last Wednesday afternoon. Contesting heat seven of the 525 metres Grade 5 series, Thanks Baz ($9.80) was poorly away from the three trap but quickly found the rail to be third behind Big Merc and Lever Footprint coming off the back. Doing far too well for his rivals over the concluding stages, the Travis Monaghan prepared chaser defeated Big Merc ($3.20) by two and a half lengths in 30.64, while the wide tracking Lever Footprint ($3.10 fav) wound up third, a length and a quarter astern. It was the 26th start for the Monare Syndicate’s white and black dog, who made it five wins and four placings when opening his account at the Broadmeadows layout. Another of the Regal Thyme progeny, Claretown Jay ($12.30) ran 30.60 to land heat six of the Grade 5 and opened his account at the Northcorp Boulevard raceway. Trained by Kevin Plunkett, for the Miracle Syndicate, the white and red brindle chaser began tardily from the two alley but mustered pace on the fence to be just behind the pacesetting Banging Awesome rounding the penultimate bend. Taking over in the run to the judge, the son of Claretown Annie notched his seventh win from 17 outings when beating Banging Awesome ($8.30) by a half length, while there was a neck to third placed Creative Mojo ($3.30 fav). We had to wait until the last race, another Grade 5 heat over 525 metres, to see Usain Octane run Best Of Day 30.15. Trained at Nyora by Donna Dean, Usain Octane powered across from box five to lead Hot Command and Tarks Legend around the first corner in 5.06. But the black son of Pure Octane and Mid City Mandy was on a mission and saluted the judge a half length ahead of the fast finishing Tarks Legend ($1.90 fav), while Hot Command ($14.20) held down third place. It was the ninth win from 21 starts for Usain Octane ($3.50), who has won half of his four attempts at The Meadows. A top run was handed in by Beau Deauville, winner of the 600 metres Grade 5. Poorly away from the four draw, the Arthur Cooper owned, Peter Giles trained chaser cut to the rail and steadily made ground to be camped behind the front running Lovely Lucy coming off the back. Checking his nearest rivals, Lovely Lucy and Old Diesel, as they approached the home turn, the son of Velocette and Larjulemi passed the post a two and a half lengths winner over Miracle Dice ($9.60) in Best Of Day 35.03, with the luckless Lovely Lucy ($9.00) a half head away third. Black Deauville ($2.80 fav) has won twice from four starts at the middle distance trip, whilst career-wise his CV reveals three wins from 15 outings ‘Team Dailly’ secured a treble on the day, and the $2.10 favourite, Giselle Bale (Surf Lorian - Kumar Bale) kick-started her career by taking out the 525 metres Maiden. After racing past the lamplighter, Eye Need You at the half-way, the Paul Wheeler owned chaser came from box seven to beat Eye Need You ($15.00) and third placed Allen Eartha ($5.00) by two and a half lengths in 30.92. Krisa Bale ($140 fav) made it a double for Paul Wheeler and ‘Team Dailly’ when she won heat three of the 525 metres Grade 5. In charge from the outset after exiting the inside alley, the daughter of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale recorded her sixth victory at her 25th start, beating Solo Si ($7.40) by six and a half lengths in 30.26, while Fitzroy Jet ($13.20) finished third, two and three quarter lengths afield. In another of the 525 metres Grade 5 heats,. Dede Bale ($3.70) came from box four to share the lead with Zimmer a lap out. But with the aid of the rail, Zimmer held sway down the back, with Our Buddy third. Racing to the front rounding the top turn, the Paul Wheeler owned sister of Krisa Bale

Page 60 – National Greyhound Form, Thursday, August 9th, 2012

took over then drew clear, going on to beat Zimmer ($13.40) by nearly five lengths in 30.28, with Our Buddy ($3.30 fav) almost three lengths away third.

Smithy’s treble Grafton August 2

THE WEATHER WAS PERFECT and the racing was just as good on Thursday afternoon at Grafton’s race meeting, with Coutts Crossing trainer, Gary Smith taking training honours via a winning treble and two placegetters from his five runners. Gary was successful in two of the Betfair Blue Paws Maiden heats with Orara Mick and Orara George, whilst Orara Bella racked-up a hat-trick of wins by taking out the Iluka Bowls Club 5th Grade. Orara George made light work of his short $1.60 quote on the NSW TAB when leading most of the way in a slick 23.18, while Orara Mick recorded a much slower 23.81 but his win was full of merit, as he had to display a lot of tenacity to push runners out of the way before making his way to the front in the home straight. Orara Bella was also solidly supported in her event, starting $2.20 favourite. The daughter of Collision and Sweet Elite jumped nicely from the boxes and was quickly in the lead, but she was under pressure from Transquip Roadie and Gee Norman for most of the journey but hung on grimly to score by an ever-decreasing half length over Gee Norman, with Marbec finishing on stoutly to secure third. Whilst Orara George went nicely in a heat of the Maiden and did run quick time, it was not the fastest, with that honour going to the Des Winters trained Arem Boots, who defied his $9.00 price tag for a decisive win. Arem Boots showed good early dash to take up the early running and from thereon was simply too strong for Bligh Street and race favourite, Orara Maree in a solid 23.09 victory. Ellangowan based trainer, Gavin Lowe was all smiles at the start of the day when he learned this tipster didn’t select any of his greyhounds on top. And his joy became reality when Captain Cloud and Planetary both scored impressively. Captain Cloud was coming off moderate recent form at Lismore, but he did win there in a fast 24.17, and brought that form to Grafton on Thursday when taking out the Carters Canine Capers Stake in fine style. Captain Cloud handled himself beautifully in the field, navigating his way to second on the rail at the first turn, where the favourite, Hanify’s Idol was in charge. When that runner shifted off upon straightening for the run-in, Captain Cloud took the

invitation to race clear and won by just over two lengths in the career best time of 23.00. Planetary made full use of his ideal box eight draw in the Clarence valley Sheds 0-1 Win Stake over 480 metres. Usually a little tardy early, Planetary took up a forward position from the outset, stalking Orara Tank for the duration of the journey before making a dive for victory in the shadows of the post. Opinion as to who was the winner oncourse was a split decision before the judge gave the nod to the Gavin Lowe runner by a half head over Orara Tank, with Dashiki Trick a further two lengths away third. Iluka mentor, Mick Patterson is widely known through the exploits of his superstar, He Knows Uno. But he also had a successful afternoon on the local front with two of his runners, Wonder Why and Paddy Wack scoring hard fought wins. Wonder Why was lining up in the Big River Glass Stake in what appeared on paper to be a two-dog war with the Gary Clarke trained Riverside Lad, however, it was the 40/1 pop, Tamam Shud that nearly caused an upset. Riverside Lad was only fairly into stride, while Wonder Why and Tamam Shud staged a 305 metres war, with neither greyhound giving an inch. In the end it was Wonder Why that prevailed to score by a head over Tamam Shud, with Riverside Lad finishing on for third. Mick’s next runner, Paddy Wack caused a fair upset when lowering the colours of the strongly fancied Stress Rate. Most people expected Stress Rate to make the Henwoods Hot Bread Shop Stake a one-act affair off his ideal box eight draw. But Paddy Wack had other ideas and showed plenty of heart to fend-off the big finish of Stress Rate, defeating the $1.40 favourite by a head in 27.64, with Phantom Alex a further three lengths back in third spot. Former Queensland trainer, Jim Gallaway has made Grafton his new home base, and last week he unearthed a very smart youngster, Pink Jeanes. Stepping out from the usually tough box six on the ‘corner’ 305 metres start, Pink Jeanes displayed brilliant acceleration to scoot to the front as they hit the first turn. He sped away to an emphatic five lengths victory over Matai and in doing so recorded an excellent 17.35 for a first starter. With the early dash this runner possesses, it won’t be long before Jim and Pink Jeanes are back in the winners circle. Other winners on the day were Appley Road for John Corrigan in the Greyhound Products Direct 5th Grade, Quicks The Trick, who did a great job to win after missing the start in the Roches Family Hotel Stake for Alan Provest, and Cooper's Bear, who led most of the way in the Village Green Hotel 5th Grade. - Grafton Guru

WITH A LACK of local racing, Ken McAuley turned to coursing to give his dogs a hit-out, and was rewarded with a double when Full Embargo and Chiling Tale enjoyed a gallop along the grassy straight. Todd Kelly’s Made to Size x Flame McBain litter provided another double, with Fiery McBain and Nicholas Jack defeating their kennelmates. Datz Gotem ran Best Of Day 15.07 to defeat Rose of Galilee in the Free For All, and Dale Martin’s Billenco King careered away to a five lengths win over Embers McBain, whilst Laurie Cahalan’s Zuzanna greeted the judge over Pristine Justice. The Club has scheduled Prelude races for our next meeting on August 12, and these will be 8-dog events to help prepare your charges for the additional runs.
