WHEN LOOKING at the Maturity field after the box draw, I did think that Desalle Bale, a Group winner, had a good chance of beating her sibling brother, Barcia Bale. The reason being that Desalle Bale is a reliable beginner and the rails draw was a big plus, whilst Barcia Bale was in the white vest with Comic Sans in two, and he goes

in a straight line early on, thus making it tougher for the others to get to the fence. And that theory was played out perfectly in the final, although Barcia Bale still got a clear run in transit. You must remember that in big race finals one touch may be the difference between winning and losing.

But all was sweet with the even money favourite, as he ranged up to tackle his kennelmate, Desalle Bale ($3.80), who took the first split in a smart 4.98 on a wet track. That middle section is where Barcia Bale excels, and after taking over in the back straight, the son of Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale was a neck in front, pausing the timer

at 17.69 with three lengths to the others, headed by Hannie Bale and Comic Sans. Although Desalle Bale pushed her brother to the limit, Barcia Bale saluted the judge a three quarters of a length winner, running the 525 metres trip in 30.03. Hannie Bale didn’t do much wrong in the three rounds of the classic and finished two and three quarter lengths away third, narrowly ahead of Comic Sans. It was one of the best finishes to a Group 1 sprint race for quite a while, and Barcia Bale made it a perfect 10 wins from 10 career starts, with the $100,000 winner’s purse skyrocketing his earning to $127,225. As for the Paul Wheeler and Graeme Bate combination, it was the Hudson Pacific Maturity quinella, while ‘Team Dailly’ took home the $15,000 cheque. Fourth pick with punters was Ima Geisha Girl ($7.60), who came into the series with a string of wins to her credit, but showed far less brilliance

at boxrise and never really came to terms with the awkward five alley before finishing at the tail end. As for the only other runner under the double figure quote, Odie For Now ($6.70), she needed to find the rail as they rounded the first bend. But she was slow out and checked out of it before coming in a distant fifth. Caught up with leading mentor, Graeme Bate, who said that Barcia Bale and Desalle Bale would trial over 400 metres at Geelong on Friday night. That should be worth watching, eh? “After that they’ll head to Bulli to contest the National Sprint heats,” said Graeme,. “That’s where Barcia Bale broke the track record first-up.” “And as Bulli is one of the closest tracks to the Wheelers’ property, they break-in all their dogs at there.” By the way, both Desalle Bale and Barcia Bale are named after top Motocross riders. - Allan Hawkswell

HEATS NATIONAL SPRINT Sandown Thursday After winning the Group 1 Maturity final at The Meadows, Barcia Bale was joined trackside by Jan and Paul Wheeler, while Joe Briffa performed handling duties for trainer, Graeme Bate. Barcia Bale remains undefeated after 10 starts and is bound to be a key player in the upcoming National Sprint series. - photo: www.paulmunt.com

NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

IF THERE IS a Three Tree Hill, in the future this writer puts his hand up now for a share, in fact I’ll take the lot if available. In the beginning there was One Tree Hill, and the Hunter bred little girl was one of the best in her era, grabbing two Paws Of Thunder finals plus numerous other major victories in an illustrious career. There has been a long belief that champion bitches don’t produce champion offspring, however, the effort of Two Tree Hill last Saturday

NSW Ron Arnold night at Wentworth Park might put that theory to sleep for a while. In a devastating victory, the red fawn chaser simply outclassed a quality line-up and clocked a career best

29.76 on a track that was not conducive to fast times. When the lids opened in the Centrebet Free For All over 520 metres the pace was on early, with Krazy Fraz in box five and Wez Da Risk in the green both away well, while the red vested Young Snozz jumped well and formed a line of three asa they approached the first corner. From his extreme outside draw, Two Tree Hill gathered momentum and was alongside the leaders leaving the straight, but the supporters of the

Two Tree Hill came from the widest draw and chased down the pacy front runners to outclass an excellent Free For All field in 29.76 at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

odds-on pop, Young Snozz where curling the mo as runners headed to the back with the red runner in front. But in the twinkling of an eye Two Tree Hill was beside Young Snozz and applying pressure, which became a blow torch very quickly. Off the top turn Two Tree Hill charged right away, and Young Snozz simply couldn’t keep up. The leader was flying as heads were turned for home, and down the running Two Tree Hill gave nothing else a chance, scoring a dominant two and a half lengths win over Young Snozz, while Thrilling Fonz was a distant five and three quarter lengths away third. Two Tree Hill, from a December 2009 litter sired by Bombastic Shiraz, to date for the Lamb family has raced 34 times for 11 wins and 14 placings. Young Snozz (Collision x Special Osti), prepared by Jason Mackay, has produced 16 wins and 20 placings from 48 career starts, whilst the Lorraine Atchison trained Thrilling Fonz (Bombastic Shiraz x Tarawi Tess( to date has had 53 career starts for 15 wins and 16 placings. REACHING an elite 10 victories at the famous Glebe circuit, Chenzhou Boy led throughout in the Jeffrey Stake over 520 metres and scored his first win in town for a few months. At boxrise it was the extreme drawn Kyl’s Me Girl that began well along with Chenzhou Boy in the green rug, and theyt charged into the first corner together. With the aid of the inside, Chenzhou Boy found the front and took his rivals to the back, while the others strung out, with Catch The Post find-

ing second spot and Devine Law was next. Chenzhou Boy is a determined front runner and was clicking over slick sections, with the immediate chasers struggling to make any impression as they left the top turn. In the home straight Chenzhou Boy was went powerfully to the line, recording a two and a quarter lengths victory over Catch The Post in n30.17, while Devine Law was a neck away third. Chenzhou Boy, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Ocean Song for Luke Azzopardi, has had 69 career starts for 18 wins and 27 placings, with the $100,000 prizemoney barrier fast pproaching. Catch The Post (Slater x Vivid Subject), trained by Rita Nicolaou, has had 68 career starts for seven wins and 18 placings, whilst Pat Parelli’s Devine Law (Collision x Majestic Rush) has a formcard showing nine wins and 18 placings from 40 starts. Fact File: 1 Doreen Drynan’s smart young sprinter, Catcha Grenade has been transferred to the Victorian kennel of Darren McDonald for a Spring campaign down south. Fact File: 2 NSW suffered a great loss through the week when top stayer, He’s My Future was put down following a tragic trial accident. Fact File: 3 Dave Righetti may have something special in Cookie’s Recipe, who clocked the fastest first section for 520 metres at Wentworth Park in a 5th Grade, and particularly since it was the last race on the program on Saturday night.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, August 2nd, 2012 – Page 3

THE SUPPORT CARD for the two Group races at The Meadows last weekend was quite good, with the Maturity winning team notching three more wins, taking home the lion’s share of the total prizemoney on offer from last Saturday night’s meeting. Their huge night commenced with Napthine Bale, who went to the favourable seven trap at $4.40, which did seem to be ‘overs’, given the dog’s great record from an outside draw. After quickly carving across the face of the field to the fence, Napthine Bale led them through sections of 5.11 and 17.91 before rounding out the 525 metres KR Castlemaine Grade 5 in a handy 30.18 in the wet and on a track that was not conducive to fast times. Named after Victoria’s Racing Minister, Denis Napthine, the son of Larking About and Kazar Bale scored by two lengths to Cailyn Bale, while there was a neck to third placed Flip Bale. Again it was a Paul Wheeler trifecta! A highly promising type, Napthine Bale has won seven times from 11 tries at the Northcorp Boulevard layout, whilst his career stats reveal eight wins from 15 attempts. DAVID BALE has always promised heaps but has failed to live up those high expectations, even though he has recorded 18 wins from 60 starts, and 6 from 19 over 525 metres at the Broadmeadows track. Checked after boxrise as Grigorieva Bale and Proven Impala came across sharply, David Bale (Bartrim Bale - Dyna Beauty) sported the red

THE MEADOWS Saturday with Allan Hawkswell vest and settled down midfield before making ground along the rail. Grigorieva Bale got past Proven Impala and reached the next checkpoint in a sharp 17.71, with David Bale hot on their heels. An opportunist if ever there was one, David Bale ‘flummed’ a run along the paint but had to work hard for his half length victory over Grigorieva Bale in 29.99 when annexing the Hudson Pacific Mixed 3rd/4th Grade, while it was a similar margin to Proven Impala third. IT WAS IN the Koala Biscuits Grade 5 heat that the ‘dynamic duo’ got their next winner, as Kevin Bale landed the cash in a steady 30.48 with rain still falling. In a race that saw Leelicious head to box one as the $1.60 popular pick, it was simply a matter of ‘hit or miss’ that would determine her fortunes. As she’s done several times before in her 29 starts career, Engin Gemci’s talented sprinter missed the kick and after being checked at every turn, came in as a tailender. Off the reserves bench, Amaroo Sharpa ran 5.17 to the post a lap out then took them to the back, where Dodger The Batten assumed control and clocked 18.17. But rounding the final bend Dodge The Batten ran into bother and lost his chance, allowing Kevin Bale to dart to the front.

Isn’t it amazing how often this occurs. RoB Britton was the first person I met upon arrival at The Meadows last weekend. And as is the norm, Rob produced Hutmaker in tip top condition to win the Free For All, completing the 525 metres excursion in BON 29.93. Later on, he made it a double, as Jungle Hero scored in 30.,39 on a rather bleak Melbourne night. Although Went Wooshka rattled home, it was Kevin Bale that won by a length and a quarter, with Launchinator third, one and three quarter lengths further astern. A son of Group winners, Go Wild Teddy and Amity Bale, Kevin Bale’s career record shows nine wins and eight placings from 23 outings, whilst at the track and distance he’s had six starts for two wins. GRAEME BATE picked up another winner when Leeroy Knocker landed the Kraft Foods heat of a Grade 5 series in a new PB 30.07. After gaining the lead role from the rails alley, the Jane Crawford owned son of Premier Fantasy and Le Royale recorded splits of 5.07 and 17.74 on his way to a one and three quarter lengths victory, downing Johnny Ringo and Keep Me Covered. Slow out and then checked after exiting the four gate, Delfina Bale was with the tailenders when Dyna Cari paused the timer at 5.14, and was still ahead in 18.01 down the back. At that stage Delfina Bale was third and on the charge. Trained by Steve Collins, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Serene Bale got up to beat the wide running Wattle Bee by three quarters of a length in 30.42, while Come On Rodge wound up third. Delfina Bale made it 13 wins from 68 starts overall, whilst at The Meadows her record is 20 starts for three wins.

pressure from Doomed and then Jungle Hero. After Doomed was knocked over in the rush, Jungle Hero went right on with it, arriving in time to beat Yarrawood by a head in a new PB 30.07, while there was a length and a three quarters to third placed Fiery. A red brindle son of Surf Lorian and Miss Chilli, raced by Matthew and Carlyn Morris, Jungle Hero has won twice from seven starts at The Meadows, whilst career-wise he’s registered nine wins and 17 placings from 40 attempts.

What a hero! WITH a brilliant finishing burst, Jungle Hero landed the George Weston Foods Grade 5 heat over 525 metres. Having bungled the jump in the stripe vest, Jungle Hero was sixth behind the pacesetting Yarrawood, who carted them through the markers in 5.12 and was still ahead when the timer showed a slick 17.77 . 53 starts - 20 wins 15 placings HE KNOWS UNO finished best to take out the final of the $40,000 to the winner Group 2 AWM Distance Championship over 725 metres at The Meadows last Saturday night. Punters had fastest qualifier, Irma Bale well on top at $1.70, and they figured there were only two other possible hopes, with Arising at $4.80 and He Knows Uno at $6.30. The remaining five were all at double figure odds, with Fyna Bale at $15.80, Lektra Jay ($16.70), Czar ($27.90), Double Champ ($30.70) and Lady Grey ($32.00). When the traps flew open it was Irma Bale that was away best and she had no trouble leading them to the first mark in 4.88. The popular elect had just over a length on her litter sister, Fyna Bale, who had Lektra Jay on level terms, with a half length to Arising out wide, while He Knows Uno was second last and six lengths off the lead.

Irma Bale was the lamplighter around to the Judge the first time, going past in 15.96 holding a two lengths gap on Fyna Bale and Lektra Jay, with Czar and Arising fourth and fifth, and then a break to He Knows Uno sixth, spotting the leader seven lengths. Irma Bale made her way around to the third checkpoint in 29.65, but Fyna Bale was on her hammer just over a length down, with Czar getting to third behind him, while He Knows Uno had started a forward move and was looking ominous. Up to the home bend Irma Bale had Fyna Bale coming alongside to issue her challenge, whilst He Knows Uno had hooked out from the fence and was storming into it three-wide. He Knows Uno was the one with the petrol in the tank and he claimed the leaders half-way down the running to come away and score by a length and a half in 42.75. Fyna Bale nabbed her sibling, Irma Bale right on the wire to pick up the $12,000 second money by a neck. There was a gap to Double Champ in fourth spot, ahead of Czar, Lektra Jay, Arising and Lady Grey. All the accolades on the night go to the winner, who gave them a start and outstayed them. The son of Primo Uno and Honeymoon’s Over is owned by Lillian Patterson, and this was his first win at his third start at the trip. The black half-miler from

He Knows Uno ran 42.75 to annex the Group 2 AWM Distance final.

Iluka in northern NSW has now won 30 of his 66 starts, and with 26 placings, has put $418.364 in the bank, which takes him to 15th on the all-time stake earner’s list. We caught up with the trainer of He Knows Uno, Mick Patterson, who told us, “It’s nice to finally do it, but it’s awfully hard to win there.” “I’ve been down there three times with him for The Temlee, the TOPGUN and The Zoom Top, and they were all extremely hard races, as you’re up against the best dogs in Australia when they are at their top.” “I suppose the same applies to Victorians who go to Queensland for the big races. It’s a long trip.” “Last Sunday, after the heats, I drove home, so it was a 3,000 kilometre round trip, and by the time I came back, it was 4,500 kilometres I’d driven.” “I came back and stayed at Cameron Bahen’s place. They look after us really well; I’m very appreciative.” “I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in his heat effort, as I thought he would go better than he did.” “I knew the run would improve him, and I worked him at home on the beach before coming back.” “I thought he’d have to stay a bit closer to the leaders in the final, but you still need luck.” “I was worried a couple in front of him would come back on him when he was making his run, but once he passed them I felt better about his chances.” “And then he hooked out I thought he could win from there.” “When he was young he used to hook out and just go around them, but now he’ll go through between dogs, inside or come out, whatever he needs to do.” I asked Mick if the Nationals were on the agenda and he replied, “Yes, definitely. He’s entered for the NSW heats and that’s where he goes next.” “I was disappointed to miss out last year, but no point worrying about that now.” “I look at it this way, you’ve got to give the dog the opportunity to compete, and it would be a real honour if he made it to Tassie for the Grand Final.” - Darryl Embling

OWNER AND TRAINER, Barbara Spackman grabbed a winner at Wentworth Park last Friday night and enjoyed the moment. However, the likeable lady has quietly enjoyed far greater spoils, unbeknown to many in our sport. As a part-owner of Little Mother, the veteran dog lady has watched her star chaser in New Zealand become the best on the ‘Shaky Isles’ by creating a race record that may never be equalled. But it was the win of So Sorry in the Centrebet Stake that gave the trainer her first Wentworth Park winner for a long while when the son of Bombastic Shiraz registered his first

NSW Ron Arnold victory from four attempts at the Glebe circuit. Donning the yellow vest, So Sorry stepped away second, with Spiteful Tears from box three the early leader. Upon reaching the first corner Spiteful Tears led from So Sorry, with Ruby Fly High on the rail push-

ing through to have the leaders racing tight out of the straight. As they raced down the back and using the fence, Ruby Fly High dashed away from Spiteful Tears, while So Sorry was still close enough to issue a threat. This order remained the same until the home corner, where the leading duo started to tire, allowing So Sorry to swoop up and challenge strongly. Racing clear down the running, So Sorry went on to win by one and a quarter lengths from the late finishing Go Ivan, with Ruby Fly High third, a half length away. Clocking 30.48 for the 520 me-

At Wentworth Park last Friday, Avondale Milano opened his account at the city venue by taking out a 5th Grade over 520 metres in 30.21 for trainer, Brad Canty and owner, Barbara Spackman.

punters found Glen Gallon and Billy The Sid sharing favouritism, with good support for El Brooklyn, and then Bye Bye Bucks at better than each-way odds, which was his best price in many starts. Boxrise saw Bye Bye Bucks come out flying from the extreme outside draw and it was the pink rug that carved across the face of the field as the middle division bunched up. The inside drawn pair of El Brooklyn and Glen Gallon were very crowded and couldn’t stretch out at all. Arriving at the first corner, Bye Bye Bucks had crossed the field and shot away into the back, while Billy The Sid and Street Boss raced tight behind him, with Ritza Ryder working up out wide on the track. Off the top bend Bye Bye Bucks was in full swing, and this bold striding black chaser covers the ground easily when in full flight. Turning for home it was all Bye Bye Bucks, and to the cheers of his connections it was a five and a half lengths victory over the fast finishing Ritza Ryder, while Street Boss ran a gallant race to take third prize, a further three quarters of a length back. At his first race start at the Dogdome, Bye Bye Bucks clocked a brilliant 29.75. Bye Bye Buck (x See Ya Senorita) has had 35 career starts for his 18 wins and 10 placings, with stakes now at $117,000. Ritza Ryder (Where’s Pedro x Midnight Flare) was another who passed the $100,000 prizemoney

level for trainer, Mark Gatt, with 38 career starts producing 16 wins and 14 placings, whilst the Owen Makin trained Street Boss (Bombastic Shiraz x Fancy Smile) after start 50, his CV now shows 14 wins and 17 placings. NEIL STAINES was most happy to see Bomb Disposal return to the winner’s list over the middle distance journey. From the outset, Bomb Disposal settled in a forward spot from box six, with the early leader Me Again out of box five pushing forward. After leaving the straight Me Again was tackled by Bomb Disposal, and the son of Big Daddy Cool cleared out heading to the back. Making ground from the back was Proven Cue and Destined To Be, who both were coming into calculations. Turning for home Bomb Disposal travelled strongly and was able to run out a convincing two and three quarter lengths winner over Proven Cue, running 34.83 for the 600 metres trip, with Celebration Time running on along the paint to gain third prize, a length further adrift. Bomb Disposal (x Bulletproof Girl) has had 48 career starts for 12 wins with 18 placings. Proven Cue (Bit Chili x Thanks Blue), prepared by Andy Lord at Cawdor, from 71 career starts has notched six wins and 24 placings, whilst the Harry Sarkis trained Celebration Time (Bit Chili x Kowem Girl) has had 26 career starts for five wins with 12 placings. - Ron Arnold

NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

Good Evans BARRY EVANS made his 12-hour round trip a most successful venture following a winning double that included his smart sprinter, Little Ed, who recorded his fifth win at the venue. Beautifully drawn in the eight, Little Ed began well and showed great pace down the outside and swooped on the front leaving the straight. Racing clear, Little Ed was clocking handy sections, and it was only his condition that would be an issue, as the son of Big Daddy Cool hadn’t been over this distance for quite a while. Little Ed turned for home still clear of Zipping Onyx, who was running on, and held on to score by two lengths, with Thunder Lee finishing a close third. The time of 30.41 perhaps showed a slight lack of hard condition, but this 31kg chaser will have derived great benefit from this hitout. Little Ed (x Be My Girl) has now had 26 career starts for 13 wins and six placings. Zipping Onyx (Malfoy x Or Catra) to date has had 26 career starts

for eight wins and 10 placings for trainer, John Chapman, whilst Thunder Lee (Brett Lee x Dream Of Thunder), trained by Keith Pedrana, has had 37 starts for nine wins and 12 placings. MAKING IT back to back wins was the Brad Canty owned and trained Avondale Milano, who finished solidly to win the Centrebet Stake over 520 metres. At boxrise the early speed was shown by Art Of Desire from box four, with King Biscuit Boy in the white singlet also quickly into stride. Sporting the stripe vest was Avondale Milano, who slotted straight onto the fence and was awaiting a run. Into the back King Biscuit Boy led, while Avondale Milano found a run into second spot, with Black Valiant and Chadwick next. Coming down the side King Biscuit Boy still led, but Avondale Milano was threatening as heads were turned for home. In the straight Avondale Milano moved up, took over then shot clear, going on to win by a length over King Biscuit Boy in 30.21, with Black Valiant two and a quarter lengths away third. Avondale Milano, who’s by Collision out of Micro Lee, has now had 13 career starts for four wins and six placings. King Biscuit Boy (Give Me Five x Hannah Jane) for trainer, Ben McCauley, has had 47 career starts producing five wins and 17 placings, whilst Barry Evans trains Black Valiant (Eiffella x Red River Valley), whose CV reveals 35 starts yielding eight wins and 17 placings.

AFTER A DOZEN city wins and his superb form of late, it was just a matter of time before Bye Bye Bucks stood on the winning dias as a Group race winner. Last Thursday night at Dapto, the icing was put on the cake for the avid racer, who scored brilliantly in the Sportingbet Megastar. And with it came his biggest pay cheque to date of $40,000. The son of Bt Chili has held form over the past few months, competing against the very best, and his domination of Sydney chasing is a credit to little known trainer, Ken Lewis, who is reaching veteran status in our sport. The very approachable mentor easily admits that this is the best dog he has trained, and will ever put a collar on, and this thought is also shown by owner, Glen Jones, who has enjoyed this magical ride in greyhound racing. The 36kg chaser is just past two years of age,and if he is able to stay on the track for another year or so, his record could be quite outstanding. With 18 wins to date, including 12 in town and already over $100,000 in stakes, there is a distinct possibility that new record levels could be reached at year’s end. WHEN trainer, Brendan Pursell made the transition from harness racing to greyhounds about 18 months ago there may have been some who thought he would find it tough going . But almost from the outset he showed a talent for the caper and one of his first dogs, Lika Whisper put him on the map as a promising mentor. Whilst Lika Whisper may have lost a bit of his sparkle, he has done a brilliant job to win 14 and notch as many minor placings from 35 starts for Pursell. But a youngster named Gatty Com looks set to take over the mantle as Pursell’s kennel star, given his outstanding record since arriving in his care in May. Gatty Com was unable to win from 17 starts in Victoria prior to crossing Bass Strait, although he had been placed twice at The Meadows and once at Sandown. But after a month in Pursell’s care the dog made his Tasmanian debut with an impressive win in Launceston. Three starts later he won in Hobart over 461 metres in a time of 26.11, which was only a couple of lengths outside Best Of Night (26.01) In Hobart last Thursday night Gatty Com notched his fourth win in succession, leading all the way from box six to score by almost two lengths from Pippi’s Gold with Mr. Everywhere a half length astern. His time of 26.34 was reasonable for a Grade 4 event, but no doubt Pursell will be out to get more improvement in him leading up to the State Heats of the National Sprint

Tassie Peter Staples series, for which the dog has been nominated. Gatty Com (Vapour Whirl - Kirabilli Jessie) has good box manners as a rule, and provided he continues to improve, the dog could be competitive in the National series.

Nearing his best LONGFORD trainer, David Crosswell’s quest to have I’m A Fencer back to his top in time for the upcoming National Sprint Championship to be run in Hobart, may yet be realised, given the dog’s outstanding performance in Hobart last week. I’m A Fencer was spelled for about five months after suffering an injury in a race at Devonport in February. Crosswell presented his kennel star first-up in Launceston on July 3 for an impressive win over arch-rival, Rewind. Whilst he had his colours lowered at his subsequent outing by Rewind, he showed enough in an Invitation race over 461 metres last Thursday night in Hobart to suggest that Crosswell has a genuine contender at least in the State Heats of the National Sprint series. I’m A Fencer was only fairly away from box two but he mustered speed so quickly that he had two lengths on his rivals in the first few

Page 8 - National Greyhound Form, Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

On his way to the National Sprint series, Gatty Com made it four consecutive Tassie victories by annexing a Grade 4 in Hobart last week, running the 461 metres sprint trip in 26.34 for Brendan Pursell. metres. He led throughout and hit the line with two sand three quarter lengths to spare over the in-form New Recruit, while Penny’s Angel a game third, over a length away. I’m A Fencer, who has won 25 of his 55 starts, amassing $70,000 in stakes, now looms as one of Tasmania’s genuine hopes of taking out the National Sprint Championship to be run on the Hobart circuit on August 25.

Unique double WINNING races on the same program was always going to be a distinct possibility for veteran trainer, Ted Devine and his son, Jamie. But in Hobart last Thursday night they delivered the feat in successive races for what was clearly a unique occurrence. Ted prepared Place Your Bet to score a narrow but game win in a Grade 4th/5th event over 599 metres, scoring from Disney Bound and Baretta Bee. Place Your Bet was having only his second run back from a three months break, and while he was starting to feel the pinch close to home, he

had enough in reserve to hold out all challenges over the concluding stages. He began well from box four to have the lead out of the first turn then had enough left to stave-off determined challengers. Place Your Bet ($8.80) hit the line a head clear of Disney Bound, who had every chance to run the winner down, with Baretta Bee an eyecatching third, one and a half lengths astern. Tadmore Dunoon looked set to figure prominently when he railed through at the top of the home straight but he couldn’t finish it off, suggesting he may have found the distance too daunting. Jamie Devine, who is a senior administrator in the gaming industry, prepares only a small team of his own as a hobby trainer but has inherited a lot of his father’s genius with greyhounds. He prepared Kenzo Warrior to win a strong Grade 4 over 340 metres, for what was arguably a careerbest effort. Kenzo Warrior began with them from box six but quickly stamped his

authority on the race by darting clear before they hit the home turn then went on to score by three lengths from Macey’s Dream, with Bane a game third, a length astern. Kenzo Warrior has had only 15 starts in Tasmania for four wins and three minor placings.

In hot form PROMISING Victorian owned bitch, Olwyn scored arguably her best win since arriving in the state when she powered her way to an emphatic all the way victory in a Grade 5 over 461 metres in Hobart last Thursday night. The win came only three days after winning the Division 2 Final of the J G Nelson Cup series in Launceston. It was the Ted Medhurst trained bitch’s first win on the Hobart circuit, and whilst her time of 26.64 was not the slickest run that night, the win was emphatic enough to suggest it won’t be her last on the U-turn circuit. Olwyn (Bombastic Shiraz - Pipe Dreams) has had only five starts in Tasmania for four wins and a luckless second to Soliloquy at her first try on the Hobart track.

QUEENSLAND’S leading stayer, Mocha Shocker is ready for the state series of the National Distance after his victory in last Thursday night’s 710 metres President’s Cup at Albion Park. Mocha Shocker (Give Me Five Am Classy), the odds-on favourite, held off a late charge from Finn’s Express to win by two lengths in 42.25, with two and a half lengths to Fashion Flyer finishing on well for third. The past four Presidents Cup winners have gone on to represent Queensland in the National Distance final. The winner took his record to 11 wins in 30 starts, but his 710 metres record is three wins from five starts. He had not run over 710 metres since chasing home hero, He Knows Uno in the Superstayers back in June. Mick Chapman handled the dog for trainer, Rachel Scott, and admitted that if he could get four or five 710 metres runs in a row for Mocha Shocker, the dog was capable of running 41.50 around Albion Park. “It’s a pity we couldn’t get a 710 metre race for him last week as well,” said Mike. “I’ve been trialling him, but over 520 metres, and it is not the same as a 700 metres race.” Chapman is hoping the state series holds up. Mocha Shocker has already won the Winter Chase at Albion Park. Chapman said the dog’s win was even better than it appeared. “The seven dog was coming across the field looking to get to the rail and it slammed into him coming to the first turn,” said Mike. Mocha Shocker recovered from that and settled into second behind early leader, Ba Bling. He always looked likely to win from that stage, and when he stormed

QLD David Brasch to the front on the home turn he had the race sewn up.

Lucky to be alive THREE months ago Jake’s Thunder was battling to stay alive. Last Thursday night at Albion Park he continued his winning ways with victory in a 520 metres Fifth Grade. Owner trainer Jan Warner is now looking at taking on some feature races with the dog. The son of Collision and Tad Smarter ran 30.22 to score by five lengths over Sarah’s Ace, with a head to third placed Hawko’s Mistake. It was his seventh win in 19 starts, and fourth at Albion Park. Jake’s Thunder is amongst the nominations for the National Sprint state series, but neither Jan nor husband, Bill are that keen for the dog to take on the seasoned top graders, including the likes of multiple Group 1 winner, Glen Gallon. “But tonight’s win probably means he has earned a try at the series,” said Bill. “If he happened to draw the rails he would be a good chance.” Jan, however, was happier to look at races like the Townsville Cup or Lismore Cup. “I think the Townsville Cup would suit him, but I’d like to send him there with someone,” she said. “We’ve got too many dogs to get away ourselves.” “Finding the right person to take him could be the problem.” “A more reasonable target could

be the Lismore Cup, as he trialled extremely well there as a pup.” Jake’s Thunder almost died three months ago when he had his tonsils removed. “Three operations in two days,” said Jan. “He bled from the first operation and had to have two more to stop the flow. It was touch and go.” “And then because he had lost so much blood, he developed a liver problem.” That was fixed by “golden” liver tablets. “They cost $300 for 20 tablets,” said Jan, “but they worked on him and that was what we wanted.” Jake’s Thunder and a few of the Warner kennel have been with Dwyer and Desley Lennon while Bill and Jan were on a recent boat cruise. “Dwyer and Desley were fantastic with the dogs,” said Jan. “All credit to them.” Jake’s Thunder is normally best suited off the rails, but from the eight he began well and had crossed to the lead through a first section of 5.70. He was never going to be beaten after that.

Thommo confident DESPITE the presence of boom youngster, Withcott Wizard, Northern Rivers trainer, John Thompson was supremely confident that Tarks Royale could win a 520 metres Novice at Albion Park last Thursday night. Thompson has been around long enough to know when he has a good dog, and he reckons Tarks Royale could be as good as he has had. The son of Primo Uno and Skrat showed that when winning the Novice in 30.50, scoring by two lengths over Rock The Tempo, with a length to Pedro’s First third. Hot favourite, Withcott Wizard was slowly away, held up for room and then checked in running when fourth. “We gave our dog a huge chance. even with Withcott Wizard in the race,” said Thompson after the race. “And we have backed our confidence with a nice little win at $12.” Tarks Royal is from the third lit-

Michael Chapman with Queensland’s top stayer, Mocha Shocker, who landed the 710 metres President’s Cup at Albion Park in 42.25. ter from South Australian Oaks runner-up, Skrat, a sister to Group 1 winner, Que Sera Sera. The first litter, to Bombastic Shiraz, produced Group finalist, Dash Of Shiraz. Tarks Royale is unbeaten in two

starts, having come from a seemingly hopeless position at the home turn to win a Grafton Maiden on July 2. “It had to be seen to be believed,” said Thompson. “He was in trouble early but when he got clear he rattled home.”

Confidently supported, Tarks Royale was in bother early but still registered 30.50 to win a 520 metres Novice victory at ‘The Creek’ last Thursday night for John Thompson. National Greyhound Form, Thursday, August 2nd, 2012 – Page 9

ABDON BALE made it two starts for two wins over 731 metres and rounded out his preparation for the upcoming National series by taking out the Greyhound Racing on Facebook Free For All on a very wet night at Angle Park last Thursday. Drawn in box three, the Lisa Rasmussen trained half-miler was a $4.40 chance behind race favourite, Miss Woods ($1.90) and began safely to show pace and shared the lead with Miss Woods through the first turn. Taking a clear lead with a lap to run and skipping away to show the way by five lengths passing the catching pen, Abdon Bale seemed to enjoy the driving rain and reached the top turn six lengths clear of Miss Woods. Rounding the final bend still holding a goodly break, Abdon Bale coasted to the line in no danger of defeat. Although Miss Woods put in a late surge, the son of Bit Chili and Dyna Beauty crossed the line four and a half lengths ahead in a new personal best 43.58, with kennelmate, Alis Bale holding down third place. Nominated for the State Heats of the National Distance title, Abdon Bale took his career record to seven wins and 11 placings from 24 starts. ITY BITY BAMSY notched his third straight win when successful in the Greyhound Adoption Program Free For All for trainer, Petar Jovanovic. Donning the red vest and starting at $3.80, Ity Bity Bamsy jumped nicely and pushed hard early to settle down second through the first turn, where High Crimes was in control. Trailing High Crimes by five lengths in the back straight, Ity Bity Bamsy made good ground to reach the top turn only three lengths off the lead. Racing wide through the final bend and straightening for home still two lengths in arrears, Ity Bity Bamsy finished full of running. After swamping High Crimes over the closing stages, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Aisha Magic

SA Paul Rehmann scored by a length and a half over High Crimes in 30.32, with Aunty Chopper flashing home to be a close third.

Oscar Choo, you’ll do OSCAR CHOO put in a strong performance to win the grsa.com.au SA Bred Grade 5 feature final for trainer, Matthew Payne. Sporting the white attire, Oscar Choo ($3.60) was away sweetly and showed pace on the rail to share the lead with Brindle Tyson through the first turn. Working to a clear lead in the back straight, Oscar Choo edged away to reach the top turn two length clear of Brindle Tyson. Holding a handy break through the final bend, Oscar Choo saved his best for last as he bounded away up the home straight. The son of Big Daddy Cool and Final Conquest cruised past the post eight lengths ahead of the fast finishing Emerley Striker in a new personal best 30.19, while Go Harvey Go wound up third.

Goosebumps retired REIGNING SA BRED Greyhound Of The Year, Goosebumps has been retired by owner and trainer, Matthew Payne, after she suffered a careerending injury at Angle Park in late June. One of the stars of SA Racing throughout her career, Goosebumps finished racing with an enviable record of 30 victories and 12 placings from just 63 careers starts. With personal best times of 29.60 at Angle Park and 30.85 at Gawler, as well as wins spanning form 515 metres to 731 metres, the progeny of Goosebumps are sure to be valuable and keenly sought.

Oscar Choo lived up o his name with an award winning performance at Angle Park last week. Trained by Matthew Payne, the white and black dog blew ’em away in the run-home, scoring by an ever-widening eight lengths to Emerley Striker, clocking a good 30.19 on an extremely wet racing surface.

Flying in the rain SCHNELLE FLYER overcame a wet track to bring up back to back wins at Angle Park last Thursday night when she won the Greyhound Hunnies SA on Facebook Grade 4 for trainer, Petar Jovanovic. Drawn box seven and starting as a $4.60 chance, Schnelle Flyer jumped fast and showed pace on the

wet track to cross the field and hold the early lead through the first turn. Showing the way by two lengths over Jesse Be Cool in the back straight, Schnelle Flyer was traveling nicely and extended her advantage to three lengths at the top turn. Still holding a handy break over Jesse Be Cool rounding the final bend, Schnelle Flyer extended her advantage up the home straight, with Allen Banter running on. The daughter of El Galo and Wiedersehen defeated Allen Banter by four lengths in 30.26, with Jesse Be Cool third. DEVILLE maintained his excellent form at the same meeting when he won the Fundraising at Chasers Mixed 3rd/4th/5th Grade over 600 metres for trainer, Ossie Chegia. Wearing the blue singlet and sent to the boxes the short-price $1.35 elect, Deville began fairly and worked hard early to settle down third with a lap to run behind early leader, Kihael Klose. Held wide in a bunching field passing the catching pen, Deville worked his way around the leaders in the back straight and raced to the front at the top turn. Skipping three lengths clear of Rock Domination through the final bend, Deville finished the race off well. The son of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird coasted to the line almost four lengths clear of Rock Domination in 35.26, with Kihael Klose holding on for third.

Runs of the week Shane Foster performed the handling duties for the Lisa Rasmussen trained Abdon Bale, who ploughed through the slippery conditions in 43.58 to land the Free For All over 731 metres at headquarters last Thursday night, downing Miss Woods and kennelmate, Alis Bale. RAY MURRAY had a good night out at Angle Park last Monday when two of his chasers, Kalden Komoto and Aston Thomas won in Best Of Night. KALDEN KOMOTO blitzed his

rivals in a Mixed 4th/5th Grade to bring up his 19th career win in style. Starting at $6.00 from box five, Kalden Komoto came out running and showed his rivals a clean set of paws to score by just over four lengths to Ritza Retreat and Unity in 29.93. ASTON THOMAS brought up his third successive victory in a Mixed 3rd/4th Grade to post the best time of the night. Nicely drawn in box two and starting as the $1.90 elect, Aston Thomas ran to the front and made every post a winner, crossing the line five lengths ahead of Antoni Bale and Bandanna Lad in 29.90. PAUA TO ROCK rounded out his preparation for the upcoming Nationals when he ran the quickest time of the day in a Mixed 4th/5th Grade at Gawler last Tuesday for trainer, Troy Murray. Poorly drawn in six but starting well in the market at $2.70, Paua To Rock came from seventh through the first turn to storm home and grab the lead from True Pal in the shadows of the post. Paua To Rock crossed the line a neck clear of True Pal in 98, with Colorada snaring third place. POINT TWO OVER ran the fastest time of the night at his 101st race start for trainer, Rob Harnas when he took out a Grade 5 at Angle Park last Thursday night. A $2.80 chance from the rails draw on a wet track, Point Two Over landed in third place early and took over lead along the back straight before racing away for a strong win. Point Two Over crossed the line seven and a half lengths in advance of Full Embargo and Hades Jet, clocking 30.01.

FABREGAS has had half a dozen starts over the 515 metres and remained unbeaten on the track with a brilliant win in the Macro Meats Free For All. Coming from box eight at $3.00, the David Hirst trained chaser was away reasonably but had to work hard down the outside to get to second spot. It was Carol Allen that had the lead by a neck at the first mark in 5.07, with Fabregas second and Imry Bale a neck away third on the fence, while Heston Bale was between runners.

Fabregas turned the speed on out of the straight to take over and raced to a four lengths lead at the back turn in 18.73, with Imry Bale second, and there was a further two lengths to Carol Allen and Heston Bale. Although his advantage was reduced, Fabregas was just too good on the night, defeating Imry Bale ($14.50) by a length and three quar-

ters, with a length to third placed Heston Bale ($1.60 fav). Fabregas, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Wicked Witch, owned by Paul Westerveld, registered Best Of Night 29.44 to collect the $2,900 GOBIS Bonus, as well as the $6260 prize when making it nine wins in just 10 career starts.

Figured it out DYNA FIG looked one of the best bets on the card from box one in the Eastlink Grade 5 over 515 metres and he scored comfortably. Sent out favourite at the generous quote of $2.70, the son of Where’s Pedro and Dyna Panama was away well but was outpaced in the run to the first peg by Darlin Bale, who led him by a length in 5.10, with Boggy Spitfire and Cronos Bale having a battle for third. Dyna Fig railed alongside of Darlin Bale in the back to take the lead before registering 18.97 for the second split to lead her by a half length, and they had over four lengths on Dyna Elric who’d moved into third spot. Dyna Fig broke clear to set up a winning break and maintained his momentum to the Judge, beating his kennelmate and half-brother, Dyna Elric ($8.10) by four and three quarter lengths, with Handsome Shiraz ($8.10) two and a half lengths back in third spot. Dyna Fig posted the new PB of 29.48 to tick-up his second win in 15 starts on the track. The Brendan Wheeler owned, Graeme Bate trained galloper has now score in 17 of his 65 outings.

Stayed too well Andrea Dailly’s team had a field night with four winners. The Anakie matriarch kicked-off the meeting with Dyna Drago and finished the evening by landing the last race with Allen Dion. Sandwiched in between were the well backed Lektra Ottens, who led all the way in the fifth race and Krisa Bale, pictured with her trainer, who ran away from her opposition in the penultimate event in 29.72. All up there was $20,320 to share with the Wheeler clan.

All the hype over Heston Bale’s return to the track after six months on the sidelines overshadowed the outstanding form of unbeaten Sandown Park sprinter, Fabregas. The brilliant puppy was unbeaten in four runs prior to their clash in a six-dog Free For All field but left the track with those stats still intact. The Paul Westerveld owned son of Bombastic Shiraz and Wicked Witch came out humming from the wide eight alley and quickly took control at the first bend. He then careered away for a near two lengths win in a Best Of Night 29.44. Trained by David Hirst at Cranbourne, Fabregas is one of the most promising youngsters in the country, and considering that he is just 21 months of age, he does have a bright future. As for Heston Bale, he was doing his best work at the finish and will definitely be improved by his first outing since breaking down in February this year. KARANJI led virtually all the way to take out the TAB website Grade 5 over 715 metres in a new PB and Best Of Night 41.95. Wearing the red vest at $5.80, the Angela Langton trained stayer was away quickly and was marginally led early by Sequoia before getting on terms and then getting the head in front to take the first split in 6.11. Karanji upped the tempo at the head of affairs to lead them around to the Judge the first time in 15.74, where his lead was four lengths over Sequoia, with a further three lengths to Baurna Molly in third possie. Karanji went past the third checkpoint in 30.42 with a seven lengths lead over Sequoia, while Mimicking was running into third spot, albeit five lengths further back. Karanji didn’t look like being caught and passed the post seven and a quarter lengths clear of Sequoia ($5.30), with Erica Allen ($3.50) three quarters of a length further adrift. Karanji, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Sionara Baby, is owned by the Champagne Syndicate. The black half-miler has won two of his six tries at the trip, as part of his 10 wins in 41 starts overall.

Former Queensland chaser, Bizarre Barbie, raced by Mary Burman and now trained by Angela Jackson, made it two wins from as many starts since her kennel transfer. Beaten at her past seven starts in the Sunshine State, the daughter of Velocette and Skinny Magic won first-up in restricted company at The Meadows on July 18 and then led all the way over the Sandown Park 595 metres trip, clocking 34.52. hugged the rail into the straight to lead clearly, as those challenging went wide. Getting down to the first mark in 9.25, Bizarre Barbie led by two lengths over her litter and kennelmate, Migaloo Magic, with Destini Warrior sitting in third spot. Bizarre Barbie was highballing in the lead at the back corner, passing through in 23.44 with a two lengths break on Migaloo Magic, with Dashing Red railing to third past Destini

Warrior, four lengths back. Bizarre Barbie wasn’t in any danger over the final stages and scored by four and a half lengths to the fast finishing Dashing Red ($4.30), with Migaloo Magic ($4.30) a length and three quarters further astern. Bizarre Barbie, who was having her first start at the trip, has scored in four of her 23 outings. Trained by Angela Jackson, the blue chaser is owned by Mary Burman.

Barbie is best BIZARRE BARBIE led throughout to score in the Bring Your Club To Sandown Grade 5 over 595 metres in Best Of Night 34.17. Drawn in box one as favourite at $3.50, the daughter of Velocette and Skinny Magic was away smartly and

Annie Lawson was all smiles after Soda Boy added another victory to his imposing tally of 17 wins when he proved too strong for the opposition in the Sky Racing Grade 4 sprint event running 29.70. have dogs that can’t run 500 metres.” “We are training for Deen Parkinson, who raced the former champion, Cindeen Shelby.” “Deen loves the breeding side but isn’t keen on training, so we make a good team.” Eileen rates Jackson Tyne as the best in their kennel. “When he won at Wentworth Park last weekend he had not previously seen the track, so to run 30.01 was a top effort,” she said. ********** BARRY ELMS can thank daughter, Nicole McDonald for Black Valiant’s win in the recent Blue Paws Final at Wentworth Park. Portland based Elms, who owns a haulage company and trains just one dog, did not think Black Valiant would be suited by the tight Wenty Park circuit. “He likes to use a bit of the track, so I did not expect him to handle the Glebe layout, but Nicole, who trains greyhounds at South Bowenfels, persuaded me to give the dog a try, and now Black Valiant has had a win and four placings from six Wentworth Park races.” “I got him for nothing after obtaining a free service to the stud dog, Eiffella.” “A breeder with a bitch called Red River Valley used my free service to Eiffella and in return gave me a pup from the litter, which is Black Valiant.” Elms, 59, began his involvement with greyhounds at 14. “My dad, Ebb had greyhounds, and us kids were expected to exercise them for him,” he explained.

THE GREAT OLD expression, a man’s best friend is his dog, is regularly portrayed in greyhound racing. The trainer doesn’t always win with his canine friend, however, they are happy to turn up each week, simply enjoy the sport and hope the occasional success comes their way. One example of this patience winning out was at Gosford last Tuesday night when trainer, Tom Haley scored with El Sutro, who had not saluted the judge since back in March. The daughter of El Galo kept prizemoney cheques ticking over with numerous placings, but wins remained elusive. Fortunately, her owner is longtime greyhound journo and photographer, George Cliff, and the veteran participant had seen it all before when it comes to swings and rounda-bouts. Competing in the Woy Woy Poultry Supplies Stake over 515 metres, it was the start that made all the difference on this occasion. When the lids rose, El Sutro exited smartly from box three and held out the extreme drawn La Host into the first corner. Railing behind this pair was the red runner, Getches Girl, and the trio left the straight clear of the others. El Sutro was clear down the back and enjoying the front runner’s role, however, La Host was not going away and stayed nearby as they left the top turn. Coming around the home bend El Sutro still held an advantage over La Host, and down the running was able to hold that chaser at bay, winning by

NSW Ron Arnold one and a half lengths in a quite smart 30.10, with Subject Win running on stoutly to take third place, a further three and a half lengths back. El Sutro (x Gogo Sutro) has now had 22 career starts for four wins and nine placings. La Host (Mandagery Man x Princess Tayah) for trainer, Peter Lagogiane has had seven starts for a win and four placings, whilst Rita Nicolaou’s Subject Win (Slater x Vivid Subject) has had 50 career starts for six wins and 15 placings. A NEWCOMER to the chasing caper is the Zadia Smith owned and trained Bit Elite, who scored a determined victory in the Centrebet Stake over 515 metres. From the red alley Bit Elite got away well, whilst down the outside came the pink vested Clinga. Leaving the straight this duo raced together, with Clinga applying the pressure to Bit Elite along the back straight. Leaving the top corner Clinga assumed control, with Bit Elite not far away, while Lil Dancer was running on from well back. Clinga turned for home in front, but Bit Elite lifted again and moved alongside down the home running. With the post looming, Bit Elite regained the lead and finished too

Jumping straight to the front from box three, Blue Reaper led on settling down over the rails runner, Perusian, with McSlok in the green vest close up at the first corner. That trio got away from their rivals, with Blue Reaper looking good in the lead. Over the concluding stages Blue Reaper was untroubled when accounting for Perusian by one and a half lengths in 30.14, with McSlok back in third place, a half length away. LACK of opportunities for “big track” greyhounds in NSW saw recent Shepparton Cup winner, Blackalls Boss, sold for $12,000 earlier this year. “I was working 40 hours a week and tired of the six hour round trip to Bulli to find races for him,” former owner trainer, Michael Crawford, of Toronto, said this week. “For six weeks Maitland had no races for him, so I advertised him for $25,000 but did not get an offer.” “I dropped the price to $12,000 and was inundated but sold to Vince Tullio in Victoria’ as I felt he would care for the dog.” “After Blackalls Boss snared the Shepparton Cup’s $42,000 first prize, Vince sent me another $2000… a nice gesture.” ********** WILLIAMTOWN husband and wife team, Eileen and Gary Robertson had their most successful night in 42 years of training, with four winners in six hours on July 21. They landed their first treble with Jaypee Shelby, Meagan Robbo and Magic Tyne at The Gardens before Jackson Tyne won at Wentworth Park. “I was an enthusiastic pigeon flyer but Eileen preferred greyhounds, so we switched,” Gary said. “In 1970, a workmate, Sammy Flevill, was training champion stayers Fantasy Lady and Osti Too, and through him we became interested in greyhounds.” “Our first dog Silver Celo, was still winning as a four year-old and lived in the house with us until he died at 12 years of age.” “Eileen and I have a 1hA property 20 minutes from The Gardens, which is our favourite track. “There is criticism of the 400 metres races there, but many owners

The Vic sprinters

NOMINATIONS have closed for the National Sprint Championship, and in Victoria 49 dogs were entered for the heats to be held at Sandown on August 2. Graeme Bate, who won the NSC with Henerik Bale in 2001, has nominated 13 chasers this year, and they are: Allen Elroy, Allen Hertz, Brenna Bale, Carol Allen, David Bale, Flip Bale, Gordon Bale, Hackle Bale, Imry Bale, Kevin Bale, Leeroy Rocker, Napthine Bale and Razza Bale. Andrea Dailly has nominated 12 chasers and they are: Dyna Drago, Dyna Iceman, Dyna Lowell, Dyna Morris, Dyna Steal, Grigorieva Bale, Hannie Bale, Heston Bale, Lektra Express, Lektra Johnson, Lektra Ottens and Streetbike Tommy. Jason Thompson is well represented with four entries and they are: Don’t Knocka Him, El Brooklyn, Godsend and Ima Geisha Girl. Jeff Britton has nominated three chasers: Gettin Slizzard, Jordy Pordy and Mepunga Geordie, whilst Kelly Bravo has also put three entries in, and they are: Comic Sans, Katie Merry and Premier Boloney. Stan Ralph has nominated Buddy Rioli and Roy Galo, while Tina Womann has entered Sapporo and Went Wooshka. The remaining dogs are single nominations, and they are: Blackalls Boss (Michelle Mallia-Magri), Bubba’s Dream (Ken Bailey), Fabregas (David Hirst), Forever Strong (Cameron Taylor), Hutmaker (Robert Britton), Odie For Now (Kel Greenough), Proven Impala (Joe Borg), Ruby Ha Ha (Robert Neocleous), Soda Boy (Peter Giles) and Spiral Ballerina (David Baker). Three of those dogs are litter brothers, namely Dyna Lowell, Dyna Morris and Dyna Steal, whilst one, Heston Bale, has three sisters in the National Distance Championship. The last time Victoria won the NSC was in 2005 when Pure Octane scored at Wentworth Park.

The Vic stayers

VICTORIAN HEATS of the National Distance Championship are being held at The Meadows over 725 metres on August 4, and 17 stayers have been nominated. Alphabetically they are: Adelle Bale (Andrea Dailly), Arising (Janet Cottrell), Bally Flys (Robert Britton), Czar (Robert Britton), Double Champ (Tina Womann), Double Jeopardy (Jeff Britton), Erica Allen (Andrea Dailly), Fyna Bale (Andrea Dailly), Irma Bale (Graeme Bate), Karanji (Angela Langton), Lady Grey (Dennis Pulis), Lektra Jay (Andrea Dailly), Mimicking (Robert Britton), Mission Complete (Michelle Mallia-Magri), Starfire Magic (Michelle Mallia-Magri), Take It Home (Jason Sharp) and Yowyeh (Angela Langton). Andrea Dailly has four stayers entered, Robert Britton has three, his brother, Jeff has one, Jeff’s partner, Angela Langton has two chasers entered, Michelle Mallia-Magri also has two entered, whilst Janet Cottrell, Tina Womann, Graeme Bate, Dennis Pulis and Jason Sharp have one apiece. Of course, Adelle Bale, Fyna Bale and Irma Bale are litter sisters and their brother, Heston Bale is contesting the NSC. And only Graeme Bate has won an NDC before, doing so with Jarvis Bale at Cannington in 2009, and that was the last time Victoria scored in the NDC. Probably a rarity for an NDC is to see no greyhounds from the kennels of the “Moe Maestro”, Peter Giles, but as you’d

LOOKING at the entry count for the Victorian heats, and the numbers are quite interesting, to say the least. In both instances there is one more greyhound than what is needed for perfect numbers in those heats. With 49 sprinters, you can have six heats of eight, with one reserve over those six heats. Or you could have seven heats of seven. The same with the stayers, only it’s worse, as 17 is a real “cow” of a number. You get two heats of eight and one reserve for both of those heats, or you can have three heats, two of six and one of five. And of course, you could guarantee that if you do that you’d get a scratching and muck the whole thing up. For mine it’s a tough call, but I’m betting we’ll see a reserve in the heats of both the Sprint and Distance. Unless of course someone pulls a dog out before the fields are made up.

Lead up

THE Group 2 AWM works out as a great lead-up to the NDC in one sense, and a lousy one in another. Firstly, the heats and final of the NDC are at The Meadows, so you’re giving dogs the chance to race on the track at the trip prior to them being run. And many will see that as great. However, it also means you could be asking your dog to run four times in a row in consecutive weeks over the tough 725 metres trip, and there’ll be plenty who grimace at that thought. Seven stayers could be asked to do that, as they’ve made the final of the AWM and are nominated for the NDC. They are Czar, Irma Bale, Fyna Bale, Double Champ, Lektra Jay, Arising and Lady Grey, whilst if either of the two reserves, Mission Complete and Karanji get a run, they’ll be in the same boat. It’s a big ask for any greyhound, and I guess the worst part is it’ll make the dog as hard and as tough as old boots. And the distance at Hobart is shorter than The Meadows, so an even bigger ask to win the crown. One thing though, if any of the “Vics” pull it off, it’ll have been earned!

Scenarios

THERE are plenty of different scenarios that could come into play with the Victorian Nationals, and one is the possibility that one trainer will have both winners. Graeme Bate, Andrea Dailly, Jeff Britton, Robert Britton, Tina Womann and Michelle Mallia-Magri are all candidates to do that. We also could have littermates with Heston Bale and any one of Adelle, Fyna or Irma Bales. Paul Wheeler also has a great chance of owning both winners with 10 runners in the NSC and three in the NDC. His wife, Jan could also own both winners, as she has three in the NSC and one in the NDC. And of course, we could have Brendan Wheeler winning the NSC and either his mum or dad winning the NDC. I’m sure that after the heats are run, there’ll probably be another one I‘ve missed.

Rankings

AT THE half-way point of the year, the AGRA Rankings show Oaks Road sitting in No. 1 spot. At No. 2 is Miata, with the now retired Radley Bale at No. 3. Peggy May is sitting at No. 4 and No. 5 is Zara Zulu. The retired Dyna Tron is No. 6 with Don’t Knocka Him at No.7. Number 8 is Lektra Jay with Mystic Apple and Thrilling Brat level at No. 9. Irma Bale is at No. 21 but she has a win in the Group 2 McKenna Memorial to help boost her tally and is currently engaged in the Group 2 AWM. And Glen Gallon is No. 22 but of course he’ll zoom up, courtesy of his Group 1 Winter Cup win. We have the Group 1 Maturity winner to think about, as well as the two National champs in the next month.

Page 14 - National Greyhound Form, Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

After that there’s a month to the Adelaide Cup at the highest level. And then there’s eight Group 1 races to be conducted before December 31. There’s only two for the stayers amongst those, and the Bold Trease Carnival Cup at Sandown is one, the Sale Cup is the other, whilst the middle distance dogs have the 600 metres Hume Cup at The Meadows. The only one in NSW is the Vic Peters (age restricted), while there’s one in Brisbane, their Cup, and the Hobart Thousand. Throw in the TOPGUN and the Melbourne Cup and that’s it.

And six from

SIX greyhounds that contested the Shepparton Cup final have been entered for the NSC. They are the winner, Blackalls Boss, the runner-up, Leeroy Rocker, third placed El Brooklyn and the unplaced trio of Bubba’s Dream, Allen Hertz and Don’t Knocka Him. I guess it’s fair to say that any of those chasers would be ideally suited at Hobart over 460 metres, with the question being can they qualify at Sandown. Oddly enough, the pecking order at the Lightwood Road venue might be back to front, as to how they finished at the Kialla circuit. But there’s not that much between them and it could boil down to box draws to be the decider.

South Aussie noms

IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA, 48 nominations were received for the Nationals. There were 32 entries for the Sprint, namely Andrew’s Courage, Antoni Bale, Aston Odin, Aston Thomas, Briony Bale, Buckaringa Lad, Crazy Heart, Deadly Impact, Emerley Striker, Golden Monza, Gwynn Bale, High Crimes, Ity Bity Bamsy, Jessie Be Cool, Johnny Will, Just Chases, Kalden Aurora, Kalden Komoto, King Ashy, Koubek, Lagoon Lovin’, Mad Monza, Niamh Premier, Octane Osti, Paua To Rock, Point Two Over, Proven Puzzle, Rush Hour, Sneaky Spirit, So Spontaneous and Street Value with Kalden Bolt not eligible. And in the Distance category, they received 16 entries; Abdon Bale, Alis Bale, Deeply Red, Dyna Aline, Fredrina Bale, Jessenia Bale, Jordo’s Pushbike, Kalden Mayhem, Kalden Petroni, Miss Lily Rose, Miss Woods, Paua To Rock, Sizzling Cash, Special Gem and Then Quoted, with Fabulosity ineligible. It’s interesting to see Paua To Rock nominated for both; nothing like being versatile, eh? We have to go back to 1993 to find the last South Australian winner of the NSC, and that was Casino Tom, who scored on home soil. The last time the Nationals were in

Tasmania was the last time a South Aussie stayer won the crown, and the year was 2006, with the winner being Bothing.

Queensland noms

IN QUEENSLAND, they received 40 nominations for their heats of the Nationals. The 24 sprinters are: Air Morton, Aladdin’s Queen, Atomic Aussie, Bellagio Lad, Blue Stockade, Cake Fear, Cakes And Pies, Champagne Shell, Glen Gallon, Hanson Senor, Hawko’s Mistake, Jake’s Thunder, Knocka Down, Lacoste, Lorian Cocktail, Master Brutus, Metz Magic, Miss Cody, Our Don, Prince Elite, Red Rocket, Sobbing Destiny, Spirited Flame and Tough As. The 16 stayers are Ba Bling, Befitting, Black Cat Moan, Carlingford Frost, Fashion Flyer, Finn’s Express, Groovy Yankees, Heartland Girl, Hot Sunday, Lady Tycoon, Lay Down Teddy, Mocha Shocker, Shinzo’s Girl, Tarlie’s Angel, Taxi Girl and Wave To Elle. It’s great to see last year’s National Sprint champion, Metz Magic back to defend his crown. As you’d know, Metz Magic was only a reserve for the Grand Final last year but after gaining a start, pulled off a top win on home soil. Of course his trainer, Ron Ball is no stranger to National’s success, as he put the polish of dual NDC, Boronia Blossom. Ron also has Bellagio Lad, Cakes And Pies and Tough As nominated for the NSC. And Reg Kay, who has Knocka Down entered, has his own special piece of National’s history, as he won the title with Elite State in 2003 and Knocka Norris in 2008, and they are father and son. If Knocka Down can go through and win, that would set a record that’ll take a lot of tossing, as Knocka Down is a son of Knocka Norris. Like Victoria, there are two trainers with runners in both the Sprint and the Distance, and they are Bruce Linnan and Darren Titmarsh. And of course, Queenslanders are defending the NDC that they won last year when Dashing Corsair scored.

Tassie scorecard

TASMANIA has hosted the NSC three times and the NDC six times. The scorecard for the NSC is Western Australia once (Fremantle Echo) and NSW twice (Placard and Immortal Love). And the scorecard for the NDC is: Victoria four times (Saki Dasher, Shamrock Jewel, Ten Guitars and Osti’s Joker), NSW once (Dusty Ginny) and South Australia once (Bothing).

Some quirky history

THERE’S some quirky history associated with the Nationals.

Meaningless reports

If time and funds are unlimited in the search for an answer to a chronic bowel problem, Giardia can always be relied upon to fill the diagnosis paragraph in the laboratory report. Giardia are simple one-cell organisms called protozoa that live in the small intestine. Other examples of protozoa are neospora and Toxoplasma, so it is a branch of veterinary medicine that until recently was little understood. It is a common organism in dogs and in the environment. It is often present even in the absence of disease. It is an intestinal infection and can cause diarrhoea and failure to thrive, but it is widely believed to be an opportunistic organism that proliferates in the weakened or stressed individual. The organism is an oval-shaped cell surrounded by small hairy tentacles (flagella) that help it to move around. It divides itself to multiply and after a period of time develops cysts that escape with the faeces and contaminate the environment and water supply, allowing infection to be spread to other individuals. Most infections with Giardia are asymptomatic. In the rare cases in which disease occurs, younger animals are usually affected, and the usual sign is diarrhoea.

By Dr. Des Fegan MVB MRCVS

The diarrhoea may be acute, intermittent or chronic. Usually the infected animals will not lose their appetite, but they may lose weight. The faeces are often abnormal, being pale, having a bad odour and appearing greasy. In the intestine, Giardia prevents proper absorption of nutrients, damages the delicate intestinal lining and interferes with digestion. The Giardia attributed to most canine infections is called Giardia Canis, and at this time it is not known how infectious this is for people. What is known is that there are different species of Giardia that are specific to people, and it is a considerable problem in unhygienic environments. Experimental evidence suggests that it is difficult to transmit human derived Giardia infections to dogs. Giardiasis is very difficult to diagnose because the protozoa are so small and are passed intermittently. Daily examination of stool samples is often required to find the organism.

For instance, the first 12 years the NSC was staged, it ran under a sequence of venues. That sequence was Harold Park, Olympic Park, Wentworth Park and Sandown, which was repeated twice more. The 13th running saw the change, and the Gabba in Queensland became the first State outside of NSW and Victoria to host the event. Angle Park and Cannington followed in the next two years, but it took 22 years from when the series began for Tasmania to get an NSC. However, in the NDC, Hobart was “the third cab off the rank” following the first two times the series was run, where the venues were Wentworth Park and Sandown. The Nationals have been run on 11 different tracks, and they are the Gabba and Albion Park in Queensland, Harold Park and Wentworth Park in NSW, Olympic Park, Sandown and The Meadows in Victoria, Hobart and Launceston in Tasmania, Angle Park in South Australia and Cannington in Western Australia.

Your Say

“Night Owl” stated, “I certainly won’t mind if racing in Australia is 24/7, as I like sitting up all night.” Guess you sleep during the day, eh? “Banana Bender” asked, “Where do you rate Glen Gallon?” DefinitelyTop 5! “Notta Dope” asked, “I see the number of positive swabs has increased in NSW, so does that mean more are trying to beat the system, or is it the testing methods have improved?” Look, I really can’t answer the first part because quite simply there’s no way of knowing. The second part, well, I’d think that testing methods have improved for sure, as I believe things that may have gone undetected previously can now be found.

This week’s Teaser

THIS WEEK we’ll continue with eight more NDC’s. See if you can work out who they are. 1. Risks Ahead 2. Undying Sty 3. Treating Us 4. Thin Hygienist 5. Lean Mechanic 6. Mostly Accusers 7. No Bight 8. Damn Altar. ANSWERS NEXT WEEK

There is a test to detect Giardia antigen, which is much more sensitive than faecal microscopic tests. However, interpreting the test results can be a dilemma. A negative test may mean the animal is not infected. However, few, if any, laboratory tests are 100% accurate. Negative test results can also occur in some infected animals. If a negative test occurs, your veterinarian will often suggest repeating the test. What about a positive test? That should not be hard to interpret, right? Wrong! Giardia can be found in many dogs with and without diarrhoea. It may simply be a coincidental finding and should only be taken seriously if there are obvious symptoms to support the diagnosis. Although this disease has undoubtedly been under-diagnosed in past times, it is not an organism that we should be overly concerned about. It is easily treated with the drug, Metrinidazole (Flagyl) and the wormer, Fenbendazole (Panacur). Walnut Veterinary Clinic 84 Clarendon Street Cranbourne, 3977 (03) 5995 5255

WEDNESDAY of last week was an anniversary here in Queensland. But there was no celebration… more like commiseration! It was four years to the day that the Gold Coast Parklands greyhound track closed. A rather talented hound by the name of El Galo won the swansong Gold Coast Cup on that night. Yep, it’s hard to believe that it was July, 2008. Possibly even harder to believe is that it was actually August, 2007 when the State Government of the day announced that it was resuming the land on which the Parklands track was located, to build a new hospital for the Gold Coast’s needs. So here we are, five years after that original announcement, and there is no realistic sign that south-east Queensland will receive a much-needed replacement ‘one turn’ track. Our two TAB venues are Albion Park in Brisbane and Ipswich which is, well, it’s in Ipswich but is like a suburb of Brisbane nowadays. Just don’t say that to Ipswich Mayor, Paul Pisasale! Because of their layout, short course races start on bends, and we all know the pitfalls of starting youngsters in such events. Peter Beattie was Queensland Premier in August, 2007. He handed over the reins to Anna Bligh the next month. Resuming the Gold Coast greyhound track must have been too traumatic for Mr. Beattie, so he bailed out of office! Through Anna Bligh’s reign, which ended in March this year, various promises were made, including an offer of $10 million compensation for the loss of Parklands. Strings were attached, though, including a condition that the $10 million had to be spent to build a new track, not

Paul Dolan re-open Toowoomba, Beenleigh or a similar former greyhound venue. During Bligh’s nearly five years in office we saw various boards be custodians of the $10 million. Phil Bennett’s GRA board, then Kerry Watson’s Greyhounds Queensland board, then Bob Bentley’s Racing Queensland board came up with a few ideas but nothing got much past a lot of talking. Kevin Dixon’s current Racing Queensland board says it is still investigating whether a new track at Logan on Brisbane’s southern outskirts is workable. If it’s too costly and too hard, Dixon promises a contingency plan will be revealed by Christmas this year. Dixon is well aware of the need and benefits of a ‘one turn’ track. `The natives are restless, they want some commitment real soon. Given that we have now reached the month of August, and it’s been a long wait since August 2007, what’s a few more months until Christmas? Dixon said the Industry Infrastructure project team recently completed a factfinding tour of Geelong and The Meadows to assist in preparing the design criteria for a new facility. If the team could combine the best aspects of those Victorian venues into a new complex near Brisbane, how good would that be?

I’d like to see that!

KEVIN DIXON’S RQL board recently floated several ideas that it believes will benefit greyhound racing participants. This includes affording TAB status to Bundaberg and Cairns.

Cairns and Bundaberg have more or less been in limbo for many years. It’s been a real struggle by a small band of stalwarts to keep those places going. The promise of TAB status has, understandably, been welcomed by them. What wasn’t popular was an RQL board plan to reduce prizemoney at Albion Park’s Thursday meetings to fund increases at country and provincial venues, including Cairns and Bundaberg. That probably won’t happen now, but the plan is still there for Cairns and Bundaberg to join the TAB circuit. Plenty of people have ridiculed the idea. After all, both tracks average six or races per meeting, provided by around 20 trainers. Some heart can be taken from the experiment of making Rockhampton a TAB track a couple of years ago. As a non-TAB venue, its field sizes and number of participants was similar to that of Bundaberg and Cairns. As a TAB venue intitially, Rockhampton produced cards of eight or nine races. But now 10-race programs are the norm. RQL’s Racing and Facilities Supervisor, Darryl Reid says the control body is encouraged by the progress made in Rockhampton lately, numbers wise. “It wasn’t long ago that there were about 15 greyhounds running at the weekly trial session there.” “But now it’s up around 35 trialling per week. and it’s probably going to be necessary to introduce a second trial session each week,” Reid said. If numbers build up progressively in Bundaberg and Cairns, it will be saviour of the sport in those two towns.

SERIOUS concerns have been raised by trainers down in the Western District over what they call an “amateur” approach to our code. OTL’s source revealed that a senior steward was thrust into the role of veterinary surgeon after the regular vet didn’t turn up in time for the Warrnambool morning meeting. Seems the vet thought the meeting was a night fixture and the steward in charge started checking greyhounds over the table before the vet was eventually summoned to attend the meeting. That decision in itself is fraught with danger as to my knowledge none of our stewards have done the hard yards at university and completed a veterinary science course. Are our stewards qualified to inspect and check greyhounds as they go over the table?. The scenario of “sick” or “injured” greyhounds getting the okay to race by unqualified persons is a recipe for litigation. Another allegation from OTL’s mole at the same track witnessed an unfortunate incident where a greyhound was badly injured and had to be put down. These unfortunate accidents do happen in all three codes but apart from the greyhound suffering, so were the connections who were furious when they were informed that the on duty vet didn’t have the “green dream” and had to leave the course and return to the surgery to collect the lethal drug before the greyhound could be euthanased. Then another case of a greyhound vomiting in it’s kennel didn’t arouse the interests of the stewards.

My girlfriend said she was leaving me due to my obsession with the 60’s group, The Monkees. I thought she was joking . . . And then I saw her face. . . As mentioned in this column prior, why samples of vomit is not collected and sent to RASL for analysis is beyond me. This particular greyhound could have been carrying a bug or another form of illness that could be contagious and effect those in surrounding kennels. I shouldn’t have to spell out the scenarios attached to these “vomit” cases, it should be mandatory that if any greyhound happens to throw up in the kennel, then a sample should be collected and sent to the analysts. Then there is the “sinister” aspect of the ailing chaser who could be suffering from the effects of a banned substance. Apart from painting the obvious picture do I have to sign it as well. The standard reply from the GRV Stewards department of “the greyhound was not under the normal security swabbing process implemented by Stewards when they intend to take samples from a greyhound” needs a drastic review.

Bleedin’ obvious NGF’s vast national data bank has an incredible 2454 “Bale” named greyhounds. The Wheeler farm must have a stressful time submitting names, as with nearly 2500 already in the system, they would have to make sure their was no duplications.

But one name that surprised me that hasn’t already been used by the successful owner is Wool Bale. Sounds the most logical name associated with a “Bale”. And considering the wealth attached to a “sheep’s back” these days, it sounds a monty for one of their “prized” pups in the future to have this racing monicker.

Girls night out THE fairer sex were on their toes at Sandown Park last week. Eight of the dozen races were claimed by women trainers. Andrea Dailly led the charge with a quartet, Dyna Drago, Lektra Ottens, Krisa Bale and Allen Dion. Michelle Mallia-Magri’s Lara kennel continues to fire after capturing the Shepparton Cup with Blackalls Boss and she chimed in with Starfire Magic who won first up over the staying trip. Angela Lan gton’s health y 28.57% strike rate didn’t take a hit and she provided the other distance winner when Karanji led all the way in a slick 41.96. Former out of form Queensland based chaser, Bizarre Barbie cooked her rivals, scoring as she pleased over the 595 metres trip, whilst Daintree Warrior was another chaser that showed good box manners by leading all the way in a Grade 5 engagement. Daintree Warrior, a black son of

Bombastic Shiraz and the top producer Daintree Lady, is prepared at Newborough by Lauren Gorman for owner Helen Joske.

Long drives OTL has always admired trainers that continually put in the hard yards when seeking out appropriate events for their runners. Long treks invariable come into play but the tedious haul from Elphinstone to Sale didn’t deter Simon Barker on the weekend. The trainer of former Victorian Greyhound of the Year Osti’s Joker thought nothing of the near 754 kilometre round trip for his two runners, Mister Mooms and Ikari Thunder.

Close shave WARRAGUL GM Sean Stanton reckons Robert Moles is overdue for a short back and sides. The hirsute gentleman, who claims to be Gippsland’s hairiest man, has an aversion to the barber shop but has agreed to partake in a promotion to raise funds for the worthy Challenge Cancer Charity. Roy is still a boy ROY GALO was considered one of Victoria’s hottest young sprint prospects five weeks ago. Well, what a difference five weeks can make on the short careers of our chasers. This youngster, a 21 months old puppy, won his first four races, with a sizzling 29.29 BON the standout at Sandown Park on June 7. He carved up his opposition in all four of those outings, winning by an accumulative 37 lengths or by an average of nine lengths. He was and is still hot property but what’s happened to his profile. He’s been beaten at his past five starts. Roy Galo isn’t exactly the pin-up boy with punters he was five weeks ago. A beaten hot favourite in four of those five starts Roy Galo’s potential has taken a hammering. But his experienced trainer Stan Ralph is not concerned. “He’s been carved up at his past three starts, belted around and has lost a little confidence”. “The two starts prior, he met Desalle Bale at The Meadows and was far from disgraced in holding down second place in both outings”. “She’s since gone on and made the Maturity final and was lucky enough to draw the red in the final”. “This bloke is still learning but you still have to race ‘em”. “He can’t keep finding the trouble he has in recent runs.” Nothing has been planned for the son of El Galo and Xanadu Dancer, but knowing Ralph’s high opinion of this youngster, expect Roy Galo to return to the winner’s list in the very near future.

TRAINED BY Ben Abercrombie, Hot Irish demolished a strong field to win the $18,000 Greyhounds WA Winter Cup on Saturday night. The Damon Fardig owned sprinter was all the rage at $2.30, as she looked to use her blistering early pace when dressed in the yellow vest. Punters and connections were not disappointed, as the 26 kg black bitch by Premier Fantasy from Lovey Craves began as if shot out of a cannon. She headed past the first marker in 5.69 and had opened a two lengths

WA Laurence Torpy break on a bunched pack. As Hot Irish made play through the bend, Strapper’s Angel squeezed the chasing brigade as she made her way across to the paint from box eight.

The favourite took full advantage and headed through the pen with an unbeatable five lengths break over Strapper’s Angel, with the others a further three lengths adrift. There was no change in the order leaving the back, with Hot Irish back to her brilliant best on a racing surface that was not conducive to fast times. She burned-off any hope of a challenge turning for home, extending her advantage to eight lengths as she headed past the judge in 30.51. Strapper’s Angel held second, with Gold Fox taking the minor prizemoney. It was the 21st career win for Hot Irish, her 19th win at Cannington from 43 outings. The October 2009 whelp has now earned in excess of $110,000.

Jim Hastings, Ben Abercrombie, Damon Fardig and Kevin Richards pose with the ultra consistent Hot Irish for this Joe Mulder pic. By Premier Fantasy from Lovey Craves, the avid chaser rounded out the 530 metres trip in 30.51, much to the delight of punters.

A CLASSY FIELD was brought together for the running of the $6,770 Winter Sprint over the 405 metres trip at Mandurah last Friday night. Two runners dominated the market, with the Linda Britton trained Give And Take the $2.40 elect from box two. as he searched for his seventh straight victory. Buddy Be Cool was strongly supported at $3.40, as the Terry Erenshaw prepared sprinter looked to make it five on the trot at the provincial track. Buddy Be Cool burst from the boxes to have the early lead as Give And Take mustered up on the paint, with Lolly Cool between runners. A tightly bunched field passed the 302 metres boxes, with Buddy Be Cool holding a three quarters of a length break into the sweeping turn.

MODERN FAMILY The Modern Day Sire with The Modern Day Dam Lines

Midway through the bend it was a race in two, with Buddy Be Cool a length clear, but showing the inside running to Give And Take. Buddy Be Cool drifted wide into the home run but Give And Take took the same path, allowing the Erenshaw trained chaser to maintain his advantage before extending to win by two lengths in a smart 22.55. Give And Take was a clear second, with Lolly Cooler leading home the pack for the minor dais finish. It was Buddy Be Cool’s 11th win from only 18 starts, taking his earnings over $23,000. The WA bred speedster is by Cool Effort out of former handy performer, Kiss Shiraz. The win cements Terry Erenshaw in the Top 10 in the Mandurah Trainer of the Year award, where Linda Britton holds a big lead over Lexia Isaac and Michelle Beamish.

Son of Slick THE BIG WEEK of Winter finals kicked-off last Wednesday when Kentucky Black, a son of former champion, Miss Slick took out the $6,125 Winter Maiden Final. The Max Julien trained October 2010 whelp broke through after qualifying for the feature final by running a strong second to Freeway Angel in a heat. By Dyna Lachlan, the 38 kilo giant was $7.80 in a very open market that was headed by the Jamie Marsh trained Coloccini at $4.10, The favourite was away well but was headed by Changes, who took a two lengths break into the opening turn with a 5.76 split. The Britton trained youngster was three lengths clear onto the back sec-

Kentucky Black had bullocked his way across to the paint and railed up into third place. Changes maintained his three lengths break into the second turn, with Kentucky Black railing past Coloccini to take up the chase to the leader. Kentucky Black closed-in hard, checking wide off the lamplighter as they turned for home. It was only a minor hurdle for the impressive youngster, who powered to the line six-wide for a two and half length win over Changes, with Coloccini a further two lengths away third. All three placegetters were WA bred. Kentucky Black was the first of the Miss Slick progeny to salute, with Max and Pam Julien hoping this will be first of many wins for the litter.

LOCAL IDENTITY, Mavis Wilkinson had reason to smile when Kooringa Bec resumed from a long spell and took out a 5th Grade over 411 metres at the Casino Friday, July 20 meeting. Now approaching four and a half years of age, Kooringa Bec (Brumby Lad - Kooringa Bella) was having her first start since February of this year, and although not the best away from box three, she quickly mustered speed to draw clear in the middle stages and then hung on to score by three quarters of a length in a handy 23.30. She is lightly raced, having only had 22 starts, and Friday’s victory was her third. Heats of the Betfair Blue Paws Super Series over 484 metres headed the program. The final, to be contested next Friday, carries prizemoney of $2,000 to the winner with a Blue Paws Bonus of $2,500 if the winner is Blue Paws nominated. The opening heat was taken out by Phantom Jewels for local owner trainer combo, Deidre and John Free. Taking full advantage of the inside draw, Phantom Jewels (Special Phantom - Siam Smile) finished off the race nicely at her first look at Casino track, defeating Erin Norris in 27.54. Bralyn Dave (Bit Chili - Bralyn Maisie) for Lyn and Brad Northfield also used his inside draw when taking out the second heat in a slick 27.16. Not the best to begin, he burrowed through on the first turn and quickly assumed control before careering away to score by nine and a quarter lengths from Grafton greyhound, Larry Trick. Lilly Fly High (Premier Fantasy - Sky Fly High) gave Brad Northfield his second heat winner of the afternoon when she jumped to the front from box six and ran along to score clearly in 27.56 from Jessica’s Last in the third heat. The other heat went to the Pat Lavis owned and trained I Can Do (Premier Fantasy - Compassionate). After trailing the early leader, Bralyn Bobbie to the turn, I Can Do powered home to

The second leg of the double came per medium of littermate, Kingsbrae Knocker, who stamped his authority early in his Maiden 411 metres event before stopping the clock at 23.09. Lyn and Brad Northfield brought the brilliant Bralyn Midge back to racing in great condition, which saw the greyhound set the time standard for the day when taking out a Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 411 metres. The greyhound was resuming after falling in a race at Grafton in February, and after beginning well from box seven was quickly in control, although Miami Gold, who was also resuming from a long spell and tried hard to keep in touch. Starting the outsider of the field, she was quickly away from box three and defied all attempts to run her down. The win was the 14th in her career, and once again she saluted at double figure odds. Tweed trained Limko Dryva (Collision Jay Jay’s Dancer) recorded her first Casino win with a sound effort in a 5th Grade over 484 metres.
