Professional Development Security Officer Certification 8 & 16 Hours Launch a career in security, the military or law enforcement with instruction from highly trained professionals and the NYPD. This program successfully blends community service and safety training which can translate into a job in the professional security or safety industry and Homeland Defense. Begin your training with the mandatory 8-hour Pre-Assignment Training Course. This general introductory course is needed to be hired as a security guard. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be issued a training certificate that must be submitted to the Department of State to register as a security officer. Once the application is submitted, you will have 90 days to complete the second training course: 16 Hour On-the-Job Training. The objectives of this course expand upon topics relating to basic functions and responsibilities of the security guard's specific duties, the nature of the workplace and employer requirements. Locksmith I (30 hrs) Prerequisite: High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma, appropriate reading level. This course is designed to introduce students to locks and cylinders used in commercial and residential buildings. Troubleshoot common pin tumbler cylinder problems and simple master key systems, and cross- reference key blanks. Gain hands-on experience with cam, lever, mortise and secondary locks.
