Student Spotlight: Seiaka Touray

Everything the instructors taught was relevant in the exams and at the job.

Seiaka Touray’s pursuit of a career in healthcare is best described as a journey of resilience and determination. When he was a high school freshman, a life-altering accident put a sudden pause on Seiaka’s education. However, after meeting the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) assigned to his surgery, he identified a new career pathway as a CRNA. Seiaka earned his GED and began his educational journey.

While pursuing an associate's degree in Dietetics and Nutrition Science at CUNY’s Bronx Community College, Seiaka enrolled in Hostos CEWD’s Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certificate Program. He successfully completed our PCT program in Spring 2023. Upon earning his PCT certificate, he was hired as a Patient Care Associate (PCA). “Everything the instructors taught was relevant in the exams and at the job” said Seiaka. The knowledge he gained from Hostos CEWD’s PCT Certificate Program helped him transition into his role as a PCA.

Seiaka also credits CEWD’s PCT program with preparing him for his nursing coursework and making it less challenging.

“I’ve been recommending the PCT program at Hostos to other students interested in nursing,” said Seiaka. “It’s a great way to get exposure to the basics because the degree is very, very challenging.” He is currently pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Nursing at St. Paul’s School of Nursing and anticipates graduating in Summer 2025. Seiaka remains focused on his long-term career goal—becoming a CRNA.

Employers Are Looking For Healthcare Workers That Can Speak Spanish

Hostos Community College’s Spanish for Healthcare Workers course can demonstrate to your current or future employer that you have taken a college-level course that helps you communicate with patients using healthcare terminology in Spanish

Spanish for Healthcare Workers

This course provides an introduction to Spanish with a focus on vocabulary and conversational skills relevant to health care settings. The course covers basic Spanish language instruction, healthcare terminology, and practice speaking Spanish via simulated real-life scenarios in the college’s language lab. The course includes two days a week of instruction and one day of language lab.

The course is taught by a professor in the Hostos modern language program and is a college-level course equivalent to 3 credit hours.

Students who complete this course are eligible for 3 college credits for SPA 110: Spanish for Healthcare Workers when they enroll in a college degree program at Hostos Community College.

Certified Home Health Aide Training and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

This no-cost program is designed to provide beginners and/or low intermediate English language learners with the knowledge, practical skills, certification and English language skills required to become Certified Home Health Aides (HHAs).

HHAs assist patients in the activities of daily living and provide basic routine care. These activities can include providing assistance with eating, bathing, brushing teeth, administering medications, changing dressings/bandages, checking a patient’s temperature and pulse rate, as well as helping with artificial limbs or walking aids. Home healthcare agencies employ most HHAs by assigning them to patients’ private homes. HHAs can also work in continuing care facilities, nursing homes and assisted living centers. Supportive services and direct job placement will be provided.

Este programa Gratuito está diseñado para proporcionar a los principiantes y/o estudiantes de inglés de nivel intermedio bajo el conocimiento, las habilidades prácticas, la certificación y las habilidades del idioma inglés necesarias para convertirse en asistentes de salud en el hogar certificados (HHA, por sus siglas en inglés).

Los HHA ayudan a los pacientes en las actividades de la vida diaria y brindan atención básica de rutina. Estas actividades pueden incluir brindar asistencia para comer, bañarse, cepillarse los dientes, administrar medicamentos, cambiar apósitos/vendajes, controlar la temperatura y el pulso del paciente, así como ayudar con prótesis o ayudas para caminar. This introductory course on the basic procedures used for obtaining blood from veins and capillaries is available to students who have a current NYS Certified Nurse Aide certificate, RN or LPN license. ECG Telemetry Technician Certificate

This course is designed to enhance the curriculum of current ECG students or those already EKG certified and is available to all RN’s, LPN’s, LVN’s, Medical Assistants and Certified Nursing Assistants. Home Health Aide Certificate Program (HHA)

This no-cost program is designed to provide beginners and/or low intermediate English language learners with the knowledge, practical skills, certification and English language skills required to become Certified Home Health Aides (HHAs).

HHAs assist patients in the activities of daily living and provide basic routine care. These activities can include providing assistance with eating, bathing, brushing teeth, administering medications, changing dressings/ bandages, checking a patient’s temperature and pulse rate, as well as helping with artificial limbs or walking aids.

Home healthcare agencies employ most HHAs by assigning them to patients’ private homes. HHAs can also work in continuing care facilities, nursing homes and assisted living centers. Supportive services and direct job placement will be provided.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) Program

The Clinical Medical Assistant program combines 136 hours of classroom training along with 120 hours externship to prepare students for employment as professional Clinical Medical Assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates of the program will be equipped to assist physicians examinations, treatments, take medical histories, vital signs, phlebotomies, ekg’s and other clinical procedures.

In addition, two hours of class time will be dedicated to improving math skills relevant to the program. Students will also learn the basic medical laws and ethics as they relate to OSHA and the HIPAA standards that ensure in the work place and patient privacy. The goal is to develop competent entry level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Graduates will receive a certificate from Hostos after completing 120 externship hours. Students will also earn up to 2 college credits that can be applied toward an Associate Degree in Business/Office Technology. See page 6 for details

Dental Assistant Certificate Program

Dental assistants perform a variety of tasks including patient care, taking and processing x-rays and scheduling appointments. This course will familiarize students with the pre-clinical area, the history of dentistry and the many functions of the dental office.

Students will learn about the oral cavity and related structures, how to prepare patients for various types of dental treatments, clean and sterilize dental instruments and assist the dentist and/or dental hygienist by performing tasks such as using suction devices, properly noting dental charts and dealing with emergency situations. This program is ideal for students seeking entry-level employment as Dental Assistants while pursuing a career as a Dental Hygienist.

Local Anesthesia & Nitrous Oxide Administration Certificate Program

The Department of Dental Hygiene at Hostos offers the Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Certificate Program in compliance with New York State law, in order to facilitate the NYS licensed dental hygienist’s application for a Restricted Certificate in Local Infiltration Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervision of a dentist, to administer intra oral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxide analgesia to patients 18 years of age or older.

This 45 hour fully approved course satisfies the didactic and clinical requirements for certification. The course will also include 2 classroom hours dedicated to improving English and vocabulary skills to ensure success in the field. Upon successful completion of the course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply for certification through the NYS Education Department. Clinical skills practice will require students to participate as a patient and operator. Individuals who are

pregnant or have uncontrollable high blood pressure are precluded from participating in this course. All students are required to take and record blood pressure and follow infection control standards.

Full attendance will be required for both didactic and clinical classes. The state exam fee is not included in the tuition.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate Program

The EMT-Basic program will provide you with the necessary skills to administer emergency pre-hospital care in common situations such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the symptoms of illness and injury and the application of proper procedures for emergency care.

The curriculum follows the guidelines established by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Service, and includes Basic Life Saving (BLS) trauma care, medical/environmental operations and 7 practical exercises: patient assessment, airway management and oxygen administration, bleeding control and fracture management, traction splinting, spinal immobilization, shock management and defibrillation.

The course is further enhanced by dedicating 2 hours of class tie to improving study skills to ensure your overall success in the classroom and in the field. Peer Specialist Program

Peer Specialists support positive change by helping individuals re-entering society from treatment or the criminal justice system. Our goal is to assist in the avoidance of relapse, the building of community support for recovery and cultivating life goals such as relationships, work and education.

Focusing on building the client’s strengths, coaches do not address past traumas, but rather provide expertise on future achievement. Similar to Life and Business Coaching, Peer Specialists (also known as peer mentoring), provide assistance to clients in accessing clinical services. Peer Specialists are non-clinical and do not involve the diagnosis or treatment of addiction or any mental health issues, as is the case for licensed addiction counselors. The program curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for the field of Sterile Processing and Central Service Supply. Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue both sterile and nonsterile supplies and equipment for patient care. Students will also learn to operate sterilizing units and monitor effectiveness of the sterilization process. The program is comprised of three Modules.

Module One - Introduce the primary responsibility of a Central Sterile Processing Technician. Emphasis is placed on preparation, storage and distribution of instruments, supplies and equipment, quality assurance and inventory management. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques.

Module Two - Emphasis is placed on basic human anatomy, infection control, aseptic technique, sterile processing, decontamination and disinfection. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques.

Module Three - Provide job seeking skills and an overview of theoretical knowledge in preparation for CRCST certification. Topics include test taking strategies, resume preparation and interviewing techniques. Upon completion, students will be able to complete a resume, demonstrate appropriate interview techniques and identify personal strengths and weaknesses in preparation for employment. Students will also demonstrate knowledge of industry standards and practices needed to pass the CRCST exam.

The three Modules must be successfully completed prior to the mandatory clinical 400-hour Externship in order to earn certification, as required by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM). Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential 120-Hour Training Program

Earning a CDA credential will allow you to work with infant, toddler and pre-school aged children (Birth – Age 5) in center based care or as a childcare professional. This program fulfills the 120 hours of professional education covering the 8 CDA subject areas required for the national CDA Credential, awarded through the Council of Professional Recognition.

This course prepares students to pass the MetroTech computerbased-exam for the FDNY F-60 Fire Guard for Construction Site and Torch Operations Certificate of Fitness. Certificate of Fitness candidates will be prepared to pass the FDNY exam and learn the proper way to stand fire guard duty. All topics in the FDNY study guide are presented and explained. Locksmith Certificate Program

Become a certified locksmith with this comprehensive 90-hour course, comprised of three levels. Learn the necessary skills to perform a number of locksmith jobs from making keys and broken key extractions to installation of various locks.

Level I introduces students to locks and cylinders used commercial and residential buildings. Troubleshoot common pin tumbler cylinder problems and simple master key systems and cross-reference key blanks. Gain hands-on experience with cam, lever, mortise and secondary locks.

Level II will have students performing master pinning and keying techniques, broken key extractions and working with mortise locks. These techniques will be applied to several brands and types of locks.

Coordinator of Fire Safety & Alarm Systems in Homeless Shelters (F-80)

This FDNY-approved course prepares students to pass the MetroTech computer- based-exam for the FDNY F-80 Certificate of Fitness for Coordinator of Fire Safety and Alarm Systems in Homeless Shelters. All homeless shelters require an individual holding this Certificate of Fitness.

This certificate is also needed in any building or occupancy required to have a one-way voice communication system, regardless of occupancy classification, that is operated or occupied by more than 15 persons for a period of more than 30 days, including emergency shelters. This Certificate of Fitness isvalid only at a specific location and for the specific person to whom it is issued.

Students will undergo 8 hours of FDNY-mandated instruction, as well as an hour of test prep and an hour long mock exam. All topics in the FDNY study guide for the F-80 are presented and explained, including certificate of fitness procedures, coordinator of safety and fire alarms requirements and duties, fire protection systems (alarm systems, sprinklers and standpipe), and fire extinguishers. Plumbing Basics

This two-part comprehensive 60-hour course will introduce students to the history of plumbing, its importance to societyand the evolution of the trade, specific to New York City’s potable water systems and sanitation plants. Students will gain the knowledge of safe plumbing practices after an introduction to the materials and tools necessary to perform tasks, along with their safe storage, within guidelines. The course will focus on the installation and maintenance of residential and commercial plumbing.

The Dental Hygiene Patient Care Facility at Hostos Community College is a teaching unit that provides comprehensive dental hygiene care to the community while adhering to the most current sterilization techniques.

Treatments at the Hostos Dental Hygiene Patient Care Facility are no-cost and include:

Hostos Community College’s Liberty Partnerships Program is a high school accredited, year-round academic and cultural enrichment enhanced by career and support services .

The program is funded by the NY State Education Department and serves over 300 students yearly from local high schools in the South Bronx. Students are comprised of all ethnic groups, primarily Latinos and African Americans. Special attention is given to students who are at-risk of graduating late or dropping out, including those with limited English proficiency.

The program partners with CUNY, SUNY and several private universities along with community based organizations, cultural institutions and local businesses to form an innovative collaborative, united in challenging students to excel both academically and socially. We integrate support services and career awareness with academic disciplines, while fostering the arts with our non-academic activities. Tutoring, exam prep and college/career exploration is also available.

There is a non-refundable $25 registration fee per person, per semester.

Tuition and Fees

Registration is done on a first come first served basis. Students are not considered officially registered until they have completed their tuition payment. Most courses require the purchase of books. No personal checks accepted.

Changes in Programs

The Continuing Education Department reserves the right to cancel courses, make substitutions in faculty and change the days, times and locations of classes, if necessary. We are not responsible for misprints in catalogues, brochures and/or advertisements. In the event of an error, we will make every effort to provide you with the correct information. All courses depend on sufficient registration to operate. If a course is cancelled by the College, all registrants will receive a full refund.

Session Guarantee

Bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances may cause the cancellation of a class session. We guarantee that the number of sessions and/or number of hours specified for each course will be allotted.

Refund/Withdrawal

Request for a refund or credit must be submitted in writing together with a copy of the registration receipt. Lack of attendance does not constitute withdrawal and eligibility for a refund or credit. There will be a 100% refund if a class is cancelled by the College. Registration fees are non-refundable unless class is cancelled by the College.

Credits must be claimed within the current semester of student’s registration. Credits must be used within 6 months from the date issued. Refunds must be requested before class start. Allow 3-5 weeks for refund/credit processing.

Cambios en el Programa

El Programa de Educación Continua para adultos se reserva el derecho de cancelar cursos, sustituir profesores, cambiar los días, horas y lugares de clases si fuera necesario. No somos responsables de errores de imprenta en el catálogo ni en los anuncios. En caso de error haremos todo lo posible para proporcionarle la información correcta.

La realización de los cursos depende de que haya un numero suficiente de matriculas. Si Hostos cancela algún curso, todos los alumnos matriculados recibirán el reembolso completo de la tarifa.

Sesión Garantizada

El mal tiempo u otra circunstancia inesperada podría causar la cancelación de alguna sesión del curso. Para informarse de la posibilidad de cancelación ante un día de mal tiempo, puede llamar a la oficina de seguridad al 718-518-6888 ó visitar nuestra página web: http://www.hostos.cuny.edu Le garantizamos que el número de sesiones y horas especificas para cada curso estarán cubiertos en su totalidad.

Devolución/Cancelación

Para recibir una reembolso deberá presentar una aplicación de devolución junto con una copia de su recibo de matricula. La falta de asistencia no constituye una cancelación ni el derecho a reembolso. Recibirá un reembolso de 100% si Hostos cancela la clase. Las tarifas de matricula no se reembolsarán a no ser que Hostos cancele la clase.

El crédito debe utilizarse en un plazo de 6 meses a partir de la fecha de emisión. Todo reembolso debe ser sometido antes de el comienzo de clase. Permita de 3 a 5 semanas de trabajo para procesar.

Cancelación de Clases

Los cursos están sujetos a un mínimo de estudiantes matriculados. Cuando se cancele algún curso, los estudiantes pueden transferirse a otro curso o recibir un reembolso total. Todo esfuerzo sera realizado para contactar a los estudiantes si la clase es cancelada.

Tuition Assistance

You May Be Eligible for Tuition Assistance

Many of our courses are eligible for vouchers and reimbursement through employers, Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Workforce 1 Centers, ACCES-VR and other government assistance programs.

Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) is available for students with disabilities. http://www.acces.nysed.gov/vr

Employment Vouchers may be available through your employer. Contact the Human Resources, Personnel or Training Department at your place of employment to receive information on vouchers for tuition reimbursement opportunities.

Individual Training Grants (ITGs): ITGs help qualified jobseekers get the specialized training needed to obtain or advance in employment as an Armed Security Guard (8 and 16 Hour Training), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA), Computer Support Specialist or Computer Systems Analyst. http://www1.nyc.gov/site/sbs/careers/training-grants.page

New York State Educational Incentive Scholarship Program (EIP) may provide vouchers for qualified applicants who are registered child care providers. https://www.ecetp.pdp.albany.edu/apply.aspx

For prospective students that are interested in a Hostos Continuing Education course and/or program, requests for reasonable accommodation must be accompanied by documentation of disability which will help us evaluate the limitations of the disability and determine an appropriate reasonable accommodation. Students should submit requests and documentation to program coordinators as soon as possible and no later that two weeks prior to the class start date. We will review and evaluate the request and arrange for a reasonable accommodation that would be appropriate.

WeCARE: NY City HRA’s Wellness, Comprehensive Assessment, Rehabilitation and Employment Program addresses the needs of cash assistance clients with medical and/or mental health barriers to employment by providing customized assistance and services to help them achieve their highest levels of self-sufficiency.

Summer 2024 Course Registration Procedures

Create/Access Account

You must have a Hostos Campus CE account to register for all course sections, make payments and access account information. Please follow the directions below to access and/or create an account.

• Select a category or review full course listing.

• When selecting a category, a list of courses will be displayed.

• Select a course to view.

• Select your desired course section and add to cart.

• Once item is added, you will be directed to your shopping cart.

• Review all The Continuing Education Program’s Policies and Procedures

• Select an item from the drop down “How did you hear about us?”

• Navigate to your web browser address bar and enter the following: https://www.campusce.net/hostoswdce/category/category.aspx

• Click Sign-in

• Existing Users: Sign-in with the credentials associated with your account

• Use Find My Username to verify username by providing email associated with your account (email address provided at registration; contact the Program Coordinator for email verification).

• Use Reset My Password to reset your account password. You must have access to this email account to reset your password. Use the link provided to reset your password.

• New User: Create New Account and provide all information. Select Create Account.

Online Registration

• Click Check Out.

• Confirm contact and other information. Click Next.

• Confirm payment method. Partial Payments are now available. Click Next.

• Enter Billing Information.

• Confirm Purchase by clicking Purchase.

• Credit card will be processed by an external payment service. A new window will open to process your payment. Disable pop-up blockers on your browser if this window does not open.

Registration

All students are encouraged to register no later than one week before class start date.

Payment

Payment is required at time of registration. Any unpaid registrations will be cancelled one week prior to the class start date. Payment can be made online or by phone. We accept major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express).

Discounts

The Division of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) offers discounts to the following groups: 15% tuition discount is offered to alumni

association members, Hostos under-graduates, senior citizens (65+ years) and faculty/staff. Only one discount can be applied per registration.

To receive a tuition discount, you must register with appropriate identification, no more than three business days prior to the start of the selected course. All discounted registrations are subject to space availability. For more information, call 718-518-6656.

Delinquent Accounts

The College reserves the right to withhold the privileges of class attendance, use of facilities and services and access to certificates of completion from students with delinquent payments.
