Anthony Parker enters his fifth season at Sacramento State and his fourth as the team’s defensive coordinator. Parker took over the reins of the Hornet defense in 2010 and saw his unit respond by finishing third in the Big Sky Conference in total defense and scoring defense. Led by second team All-American, first team all-Big Sky selection and Arizona Cardinal signee Zack Nash, the Hornet defense recorded 26 total sacks and 66 tackles-for-loss. The defense also intercepted 10 passes and recovered 16 of the 17 fumbles it forced. Along with Nash, who led the nation in TFLs per game, the defense also featured second team all-Big Sky selections Christian Clark, Peter Buck and Zach Schrader. Clark went on to continue his career with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League in the spring. Overall, the defense surrendered 20 points or less in seven of the 11 games, including the final four of the season. This past season (2012), Parker coached six players to all-Big Sky honors. Cornerback Osagie Odiase was placed on the second team while safety Ryan McMahon, linebackers Todd Davis and Jeff Badger, defensive end Avery White and defensive tackle Matt Lawrence were honorable mention. McMahon signed with the Green Bay Packers after the season, marking the second consecutive season the team put a defensive player in the NFL. In 2011, four players were honored by the conference at the end of the year. Nash, once again, earned first team accolades as well as being named first team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association and the Associated Press. Cornerback Kyle Monson was placed on the second team while linebacker Todd Davis and safety Joe Larche were honorable mention. In his first season at Sacramento State, Parker oversaw the team’s defensive backs and was also the special teams coordinator. In that role, he coached safety Zach Schrader to Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year honors as well as being named second team all-conference. Parker came to the Hornets from Boise State where he assisted the program for four seasons. He began his tenure with the Broncos as a student manager during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Parker was then named a graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008 where he worked with the defensive line and also nickel backs. During his time at BSU, the team posted a 44-8 overall record and advanced to a bowl game each season. The highlight came in 2006 when Boise State finished the year 13-0, including an overtime victory over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Ironically, the Broncos began that year with a victory over Sacramento State. Prior to joining the Boise State program, Parker was a high school coach in the Sacramento area. He was the defensive backs coach and pass-defense coordinator at Del Oro High School in Loomis, Calif., from 2002-04. While at Del Oro, he helped coach the Golden Eagles to a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II championship game in 2004. During that season, Del Oro led the Sierra Foothill League in interceptions and also allowed the fewest points. In 2002, Parker coordinated a pass defense which led the Sacramento area with 20 interceptions. Parker also coached at Rocklin High School in 2000 and 2001. While there, he served as the defensive backs coach for a unit which led the league in scoring defense and allowed just 32.9 passing yards per game. A Northern California native, Parker graduated from Del Oro HS in 1992. He then spent four years in the United States Marine Corps before attending Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., where he played both defensive back and wide receiver. He earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from Boise State in 2007. He and his wife, Trisha, were married in July of 2007. The couple have two sons, Bodie (4) and Hagan (1).
