Students choose Sacramento State because they want something special in a college experience. Sacramento State athletics sponsors 21 intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Div. I level. Most of the University’s teams compete in the Big Sky Conference while other Hornet teams are members of the Western Athletic Conference, the Big West Conference, the American Athletic Conference and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Sacramento State has captured 88 conference championships in its Div. I era and routinely ranks high in the Big Sky all-sports standings. Hornet student-athletes have also shined in the classroom, posting a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 in school history in nine consecutive semesters. Among the notable alumni who were student-athletes at Sacramento State are NFL veterans Todd Davis, John Gesek, Daimon Shelton, Lonie Paxton and Lorenzo Lynch. Former Hornet football player Ryan Coogler has made his mark in Hollywood as the writer and director of “Fruitvale Station”, “Creed” and “Black Panther.” Several others have chosen to remain Hornets and work in the athletics department, including four of Sacramento State current head coaches. Our students also enjoy unique career opportunities, from politics 2

HORNET STADIUM

• Originally built in 1969, Hornet Stadium is the home for Sacramento State football. The facility has a capacity of 21,195 — the second largest in the Big Sky Conference. • A new playing surface was installed prior to the 2021 season. The SprinTurf surface features the yardage numbers in Sacramento State’s font, the Big Sky Conference logos stitched into the field and new gold end zones. The surface also has a shock pad beneath it and an infill which is designed to reduce heat. • Hornet Stadium has served as the home of several professional football teams including the Sacramento Surge of the World League, the Sacramento Gold Miners of the Canadian Football League and Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. • The stadium has also hosted the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials and four NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track and Field Championships (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007). • The stadium is surrounded by The Well to the north and the Broad Athletic Fieldhouse to the south. The Well is Sacramento State’s student recreation and health center. It opened in 2010 (expanded in 2021) and features a large weight room, indoor spaces for basketball, volleyball, racquetball and soccer, a rock climbing wall and an elevated running track. • The Broad Athletic Fieldhouse is the home to Hornet football and track and field. Built in 2008, it includes coaches offices, meeting spaces, locker rooms, training rooms and weight rooms for the teams.

GAMEDAY

• The celebration of Hornet football begins well before kickoff with a lively tailgate party outside of Hornet Stadium. Fans then greet the team for Hornet Walk which includes the Sacramento State marching band, cheer and dance teams. • Once inside, Sacramento State students sit directly behind the Hornet bench at midfield. A new VIP fan section was added in the north end zone during the 2019 season.

ROBERT S. NELSEN MARK ORR University President

Director of Athletics

Dr. Robert S. Nelsen, Sacramento State’s eighth permanent president, comes to Sacramento with his wife, Jody Hawkins Nelsen.

Mark Orr was named Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics on March 27, 2017. He became the University’s 16th athletics director.

Nelsen’s experience in public higher education spans nearly three decades, most of it spent in the University of Texas system. He was president of UT-Pan American from 2010 to 2014 and most recently served as special advisor to UT’s executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

During that time, Orr has had a significant impact on Hornet Athletics, helping steer the program to multiple conference championships, record-breaking seasons, NCAA postseason appearances, and excellence in the classroom.

Nelsen was born in Brigham City, Utah, and grew up on a ranch in Montana. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from Brigham Young University, and his doctorate from the University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought, where his fields of study were modern literature, modern philosophy and modern political theory. In 1989-90, Nelsen taught English at the University of Illinois at Chicago before joining the faculty of the University of Texas-Dallas, where he founded the creative writing program and served as its director. During his 18 years at UT-Dallas, he also was a professor of Literary and Aesthetic Studies, and served as vice provost. In 2008-09, Nelsen was a professor of English and associate vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. In 2010, he returned to the University of Texas system as the president of UT-Pan American in Edinburg. Among his proudest achievements was leading the effort to merge the university with the University of Texas-Brownsville to create the new University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, which has a medical school. He is a prolific and award-winning short-story writer. His play “We Bums” had a three-week run at Dallas’ Deep Ellum Theater in 1995. Among his many awards and honors, Nelsen was named the 2014 Man of the Year by the Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and received a Literacy Champion award from the South Texas Literacy Coalition in 2012. This spring, the Edinburg City Council unanimously voted to rename a city street “Dr. Robert Nelsen Drive.”

One of Orr’s biggest decisions paid off quickly with the hiring of Troy Taylor as the Hornets’ head football coach prior to the 2019 season. In his first year leading the team, Taylor guided Sacramento State to a share of its first Big Sky Conference title and FCS playoff appearance. The team finished the year ranked ninth in the FCS — the best in school history — and Taylor was recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award while also earning Big Sky Coach of the Year honors. In addition to football’s 2019 title, the Hornets have won 12 additional conference championships under Orr’s watch. Sacramento State Athletics continues to excel in the classroom under Orr, receiving dozens of all-academic honors every semester. Both men’s basketball and women’s golf have received an NCAA Public Recognition Award every year of Orr’s tenure for having an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score that ranks among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports. Sacramento State remains the only public school in California to ever receive the NCAA Public Recognition Award in men’s basketball, and the Hornets have earned the honor four consecutive years. Orr graduated from Christian Brothers HS in Sacramento in 1994. He earned a scholarship to play football at Cal, where he played from 1994 to 1998. A four-year letterman defensive back on the California football team, Orr was an honorable mention all-academic Pac-10 selection in 1997 and 1998. He was awarded the Pappy Waldorf Honorary Scholarship for Academic Excellence in 1998 and received the Tiny Bates Memorial Award for Leadership in 1998. Orr and his wife, April, have two children, Tyson and Jacob.

A BRIEF PREVIEW

• Two of the hottest teams in the Big Sky Conference will square off on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Fred Anderson Field at Hornet Stadium when Portland State visits Sacramento State. The game will also be the regular season finale for the Hornets and the team will honor its seniors prior to the start of the contest. • Sacramento State won its sixth-straight game and remains tied with Montana State atop the Big Sky Conference standings with a 6-0 league record. The Hornets most recently defeated Cal Poly, 41-9, and enter this week ranked 12th in the Stats Perform media poll and the 18th in the AFCA Coaches Poll. • Portland State kept its playoff hopes alive with a 30-18 win at then-No. 24 Weber State last Saturday. The Vikings have won three consecutive games and will end the year against a pair of ranked opponents in Sacramento State and Eastern Washington. • There will be multiple ways to follow this week’s game. • Sacramento State is 6-0 in the Big Sky for the first time in school history. The Hornets’ six-game winning streak is the longest since the team started the 1991 season with six consecutive wins. The longest win streak in school history came in 1966 when Sacramento State won its final eight games after starting the season 0-2. • Prior to the start of Saturday’s game, Sacramento State will recognize 16 seniors who will be appearing at Hornet Stadium for the final time in a regular season game. Among the group are eight players (Jarrell Anderson, Brandon Boccaleoni, Josiah Erickson, Isaiah Gable, Wyatt Hjelm, Malik Jeter, Thomas Parker, BJ Perkinson). who have spent their entire collegiate career at Sacramento State. On the other side, Munchie Filer III, Taylor Powell and Kooper Richardson are each in their first season with the Hornets. • The group also has six who have already earned their bachelor’s degree and are currently pursuing a master’s. • Ten players in this year’s class have been key starters for the team in 2021. Among the group is four players who have made at least 20 career starts comprised of Thomas Parker (30), Wyatt Hjelm (23), Marcus Hawkins (21) and Josiah Erickson (20). • Kicker Kyle Sentkowski set the Sacramento State single-season record in dramatic fashion as he boomed a career-long 51-yard field goal for his 15th field goal of the year. The junior entered the contest tied for fifth in school history before tying the record with a 40-yarder just before halftime. His record-breaking attempt came on the team’s opening drive of the second half. The 51-yarder beat his previous best by two yards and is the sixth-longest in school history. The single-season record had been shared by Devon Medeiros (2017), Brad Cornish (2014), Bret LeVier (2002) and Scott Brown (1999).

• Portland State has established itself as a legitimate FCS playoff threat with its third consecutive win. The team started the streak against with home wins over Idaho State (31-10) and Cal Poly (42-21) before winning at Weber State last Saturday.

• Offensively, Davis Alexander has thrown for 8,645 yards in his collegiate career. This year, he has 2,505 passing yards with 17 touchdowns and has also rushed for six scores. AT SACRAMENTO STATE

• Troy Taylor was named the 11th head football coach at Sacramento State on Dec. 17, 2018. • In his first season with the Hornets, he guided the team to a 9-4 overall record and a 7-1 league record which gave the team a share of the Big Sky Conference title for the first time in school history as well as its first NCAA FCS Playoff berth. • For those efforts, he was named the conference coach of the of the year and was the recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award (FCS national coach of the year). • Sacramento State was ranked as high as third in the Football Championship Subdivision and set records for most points, touchdowns and passing yards in school history. • The Hornets had a school record 15 players named all-conference, including a Big Sky-leading seven on the first team. • Quarterback Kevin Thomson was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and one of four finalists for the Walter Payton Award. • Thomson amassed 3,835 yards of total offense and set the school record by accounting for 39 touchdowns.

AT UTAH

• Served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah for 2017-18. • In 2018, the Utes won the Pac-12 Conference South title for the first time in school history and finished the season with a 9-5 overall record and an appearance in the Holiday Bowl. • Utah averaged 28.7 points per game in 2018 and averaged 396.0 yards per game in a balanced attack which featured 186.8 yards rushing and 209.2 yards passing per game. • His offense featured a pair of quarterbacks during the year who combined to completed 61.9 percent of their passes with 15 touchdowns. Seventeen players caught a pass with eight hauling in at least 10. Running back Zack Moss sparked the ground game with 1,096 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. • During his first season with the Utes (2017), his offense featured a second-team all-Pac-12 receiver (Darren Carrington II) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Moss). Taylor’s offense spread the ball around with 16 players catching passes and 11 players rushing from scrimmage. • Utah amassed 413.4 total yards per game and posted a 30-14 win over West Virginia in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

AT EASTERN WASH.

• Taylor returned to college football in 2016 as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Washington. • That season, he directed the top passing offense in the FCS and set numerous national and school records. • The Eagles averaged an FCS-best 401.0 passing yards per game, ranked second nationally with 529.6 yards per game and was third in scoring offense (42.4 ppg). • EWU posted a 12-2 overall record and advanced to the FCS semifinals. • Gage Gubrud set an NCAA FCS single-season record by passing for 5,160 yards while throwing 48 touchdown passes. • Gubrud, the 2016 FCS Player of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, averaged 368.6 passing yards per game, which also led the nation. • All-American Cooper Kupp caught 117 passes for 1,700 yards and 17 touchdowns before being selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round of the NFL Draft.

EARLY CAREER

• First coaching job was at Casa Roble High School in Orangevale, Calif., in 1994. • The following year, he was a graduate assistant at Colorado where he worked with the wide receivers. • Returned to Cal in 1996 and remained at his alma mater through 2000 where he had stints coaching receivers, quarterbacks and tight ends. • Was also Cal’s recruiting coordinator in 1999. • Became an assistant athletics director at Christian Brothers High School (2000-01) in Sacramento, where he also taught and was an assistant football coach for one season (2000). • Spent 2003-04 at Folsom High School as the cohead coach. • Stepped away from coaching after the 2004 season but remained in football, serving as the radio analyst for Cal from 2005-11.

AS A PLAYER

• Guided Cordova High School to a 14-0 record and a section championship while being named the Northern California Player of the Year in 1985. • Continued his career at Cal where he was the starting quarterback for the Golden Bears from 1986-89. • Led the Pac-10 in total offense as a senior and left Cal as the all-time leading passer with 8,126 yards. • He was drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 1990 NFL Draft. • Was a member of the Jets in 1990-91.

PERSONAL

• Graduated from Cal with a degree in education in 1989. • He and his wife, Tracey, have three children (sons Noah and Aaron and daughter Ella).

AT FOLSOM HS

• Taylor was co-head coach from 2012-15. • The Bulldogs set numerous California state records, including the most points scored in a season. • Folsom posted a 58-3 overall record, won the SacJoaquin Section title each season and claimed the 2014 CIF Div. I championship with a 68-7 win over Oceanside HS. • The team also set the California record for passing yards in four consecutive years. • One of his stars with the Bulldogs was Jake Browning, who would become the 2016 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year for Washington. • Browning set national records for touchdowns in a season (91 in 2014, tied) and a career (229, in just three seasons). • He set a number of California state high school records as well, including season (5,790) and career (16,775) passing yards.

BIG SKY CONFERENCE The Big Sky Conference enters its 57th year and 32nd year of women’s competition during the 2019-20 academic year. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. The Big Sky is one of three conferences in the western United States playing Division I football. The Big Sky’s full members represent eight states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. It is “The Heart of the American West.” On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963. The Big Sky sponsors championships in 16 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. The Big Sky sponsored softball for the first time in 2013. Men’s golf returned as a championship sport in 2014-15 for the first time since 2002. The University of Hartford and Binghamton University have joined the Big Sky as affiliate members in golf. In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began sponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women. Tom Wistrcill was named the seventh commissioner of the Big Sky on Nov. 16, 2019. Wistrcill arrives at the Big Sky Conference after having served as the Senior Vice President at Learfield since 2015. While with Learfield, Wistrcill helped develop new collegiate relationships within the company’s University Partnership Group. In 2015, Andrea Williams held the position of commissioner from 2016-18. She replaced longtime commissioner Doug Fullerton who served the league for 21 years. Ron Stephenson preceded Fullerton, serving as commissioner from 1981 through June 1995. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.
