Storyline Sacramento State finished the season with a 17-11 overall record and won the Far Western Conference championship with a 10-2 mark. The team won a program-record 12 straight games from Jan. 10-Feb. 27, and entered the NCAA College Division West Regionals (played in Tacoma, Wash.) with a 17-9 record. However, the team lost two nail biters to Puget Sound (67-62) and Boise State (6361). Mitch Third was named to the all-West Coast Team after averaging 15.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, and was an all-tournament selection at the West Regionals.

Storyline The 1987-88 squad reached the NCAA Div. II Tournament, becoming the fourth Hornet men’s basketball team to reach the NCAA’s postseason event. Sacramento State finished the season with a 22-8 record, led the nation in three-pointers (303, 10.1 per game) and ranked sixth in the nation in scoring offense (school-record 93.1 ppg). Alex Williams (#11) buried 167 three-pointers that year which remains the best single-season mark in Div. II history. The 22 victories are the most in program history, and among those wins, was an 87-84 upset victory over Texas A&M at Arco Arena on Dec. 19, 1987.
