Named all-conference both years with the Hornets… had one of the best seasons in Sacramento State history in 1967-68 when he averaged 19.5 points and 14.2 rebounds per game while shooting 46.6 percent (194416) from the field…the 14.2 rebounds are the fourth-best single-season mark in school history and the 19.5 points are the ninth best mark…over his two-year career, he averaged a double-double, finishing with 14.4 points and 13.8 rebounds per game while shooting 48.2 percent (280581) from the field…during his two seasons, Sacramento State combined to post a 3121 overall record and a 19-9 mark in the Far Western Conference…averaged 9.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in 1966-67…played during Hall of Fame head coach Ev Shelton’s final two seasons with the Hornets.

Despite playing just two seasons (1960-61, 1961-62), Whitaker is the program’s alltime leader in career rebounds (984)…the next closest player has 248 less rebounds…averaged 17.3 rebounds per game during his two seasons, the only player in Sacramento State history to average more than 14.1 rebounds over the course of his career…helped lead Sacramento State to the 1962 NCAA College Division national championship game, where the team fell in overtime (58-57) to Mount Saint Mary’s…finished his career with averages of 7.2 points and 17.3 rebounds per game while shooting 52.0 percent from the field…averaged 19.3 rebounds per game in 1960-61, and 16.2 rebounds in 1961-62…finished seventh in the nation in rebounds in 1960-61…also competed in football and track and field for Sacramento State.

During his two-year career, he averaged 21.4 points and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 42.7 percent from the floor (424-992) and 45.7 percent (247-541) from the three-point line…in 1987-88, he was named second team All-America by the Basketball Times Magazine and third team All-America by the National Basketball Coaches Association…as a senior, he averaged 25.6 points (7th in the nation) and 5.6 three-pointers (1st in the nation)…made 167 three-pointers as a senior, still the best mark in NCAA Div. II history…two-year average of 4.3 three-pointers made per game is the fourth best mark in Div. II history…program’s all-time leader in career three-pointers per game (4.3) and three-point percentage (.457)…helped lead Sacramento State to its last NCAA Tournament appearance in 1987-88.
