Heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer of Hispanic women in the U.S. In fact, more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Governor Asa Hutchinson announced that his office will fund an investment of $3 million in Teach For America, Arkansas that will have a lasting impact on east and south Arkansas. Teach For America works in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty. This investment will fund the training and support of approximately 150 new teachers in rural school districts over the next three years and has prompted a match of $3 million from Little Rock philanthropists and business leaders to bring Teach For America teachers to Little Rock School District for the first time next year. The 150 teachers supported by the state’s funding will reach at least 9,000 students in rural communities, an estimated 86 percent of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch. The funding will also accelerate Teach For America’s new initiative to recruit hundreds of Arkansas’ top college students and professionals to teach in Arkansas’ rural communities over the next decade. Additionally, the funding will enable Teach For America
to expand its teacher and school-leader professional development to hundreds of participants across the state. The private match of public dollars will bring approximately 65 new teachers to Little Rock School District over the next three years and will include up to 15 teachers for the 2016–2017 school year. These teachers will reach up to 4,000 students in Little Rock and will be hired in the district’s highest-need schools and subjects. “Teach For America has been a community partner in the Arkansas Delta region for 24 years. During that time, more than two dozen Arkansas communities have worked with Teach. Little Rock suffered one of its deadliest days in recent memory Sunday with three separate fatal shootings since midnight. Around 10 a.m., 27-yearold Eunice Lopez was shot dead while holding her 2-year-old in the driveway of her home. Police believe Lopez’s death was the result of a robbery. Investigators said witnesses described Lopez falling to the ground with her daughter and being dragged by her purse before being shot. Lopez was apparently walking up her driveway on the 8400 block of Keats Drive, holding her 2-year-old daughter when Williams and Collier approached her. The victim’s neighbor, Ivan Ortiz, told he tried to help the victim after she was shot. He immediately removed the baby to get her to a safe place. “They were always coming to my house and her kids played with my kids. They became family too,” Ortiz said.

As of Sunday night, police were actively looking for 15-year-old Kevin Williams. Police said Williams was apprehended in connection to the death of a southwest
Little Rock woman. Another suspect, 18-year-old Ramale Collier, turned himself over to the Little Rock Police Department around 10 p.m. on Sunday. Four others were initially arrested but were cleared from all charges. According to Lieutenant Steve McClanahan, Kevin Williams has been arrested, but details of his arrest have not been released. Both teens’ suspects face charges off Capital Murder, Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, and Theft of Property. Both men will be charged as adults police said. Earlier in the day, four juveniles originally taken in for questioning were released with no charges. Those juveniles were 11, 13, 15 and 15. Police believed the suspects robbed the victim no other arrests are anticipated. Reverend Benny Johnson with Arkansas Stop the Violence held a vigil at 7 pm on Sunday at Keats Drive in front of Lopez’s home as a part of the organization’s support. Little Rock police say there have been five homicides so far in 2016.

Officials with the Arkansas Secretary of State’s office have released the 2016 election calendar for the state. The party primary and judicial general election will be March 1, 2016 while the party runoff will be March 22, 2016. Early voting for the primary starts Feb. 15 and goes through Feb. 29 for the primary; and March 15-21 for the runoff. The presidential and general election will be Nov. 8, 2016 while the general election runoff for county and municipal races will be Nov. 29, 2016. Early voting for the November 2016 presidential and general election will be from Oct. 24 through Nov. 7. In addition to circuit judge races around the state, voters will also decide a half-dozen statewide judicial races. Two of the races are for the state Supreme Court, Chief Justice Jim Hannah and Position 5 Justice Paul Danielson. There are also four Arkansas Court of Appeals seats up for grabs. District 6 Judge Rita W. Gruber and District 7 Judge
Waymond M. Brown are also on the ballot in 2016. Primary. There are several federal and state races that will be on the March 1 primary ballot. Candidates for President will be on the ballot March 1. Five members of the state’s congressional delegation, Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., and Reps. Rick Crawford, R-Jonesboro, French Hill, R-Little Rock, Steve Womack, R-Rogers and Bruce Westerman, R-Hot Springs are expected to be on the ballot. Also on the ballot are 100 members of the State House and 17 members of the state Senate. So far, three state representatives Reps. A little over a week later, the New Hampshire primaries were carried out. The process goes on through spring as both parties choose a presidential ticket for the 2016 election. As a U.S. citizen, your vote is not only something politicians compete for, but your constitutional right. And exercising that right is as American as the stars and stripes. Before election year officially takes off, USAGov wants to help you get ready with these steps for participating in your state’s primaries or caucuses: 1. Mark the calendar. Primaries and caucuses take place from February to mid-June leading up to the November 8 election. Find out when your state’s will be and make sure you don’t miss them. 2. Register to vote. If you
are not already a registered voter, look up your state on Vote.USA.gov to begin the process. It’s mostly mosquitoes. “I think it’s important to step back and emphasize that Zika is a mosquito-borne virus, and the overwhelming majority of cases are spread by mosquitoes,” CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden told reporters last week. Sometimes semen. There are two documented cases of Zika virus in a man’s semen, and one documented

and one suspected case of a man infecting someone else that way. A recent case in Dallas, where officials say a traveler to Venezuela infected his sex partner. Blood. Any virus can spread in blood, and Zika is no exception. “It goes away from the blood within about a week,” Frieden said. That’s why, he said, “the American Association of Blood Banks issued the guidance to defer blood donations for all individuals who had traveled to an area with Zika transmission for 28 days. That was a margin of safety for blood transfusion.” How it probably doesn’t spread. Saliva. Frieden is very careful not to say it’s impossible that Zika could spread through saliva or kissing, but Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says it is unlikely. Urine. That’s another unk-
nown but again, scientists say it’s unlikely. Zika is spread by mosquitoes and virologists say it would be unlikely to also be transmissible through urine. Air. Some viruses do spread through the air. Measles is the most notorious, and flu can spread on tiny droplets that remain suspected in the air. But these viruses are very different from Zika, a flavivirus in the same family as dengue virus, which is well-studied and which does not spread in the air. While anyone can contract the virus, doctors warn that pregnant women are most vulnerable to the effects. “We’ve had a lot of pregnant patients that are concerned about this,” said Dr. Curtis Lowery, Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist and Chairman of the OBGYN Department at UAMS. Dr. Lowery said while the pregnant woman may show mild symptoms, the unborn child is most at risk.

Ralph Fuccillo Edgar Carmona Boston, MA Según la Oficina del Censo de EE.UU., se prevé que la población hispana en EE.UU. crezca un 43 por ciento en 2020 frente al 14 por ciento de la población en general. Junto con este crecimiento vendrá una necesidad de aumentar los servicios de salud bucal y la educación, junto con un esfuerzo para hacer frente a importantes disparidades de salud oral en esta población. Un estudio actualizado de Salud Dental 2020 de la Fundación DentaQuest es que las metas orales para el año 2020 es que el 85 por ciento de los niños lleguen a los cinco años sin tener
una cavidad. Según los datos recientemente publicados de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés), el 77 por ciento de los niños de hoy alcanzan este hito crítico. Sin embargo, el éxito no se distribuye de manera uniforme en todos los grupos raciales y étnicos. De hecho, según el CDC, una de las mayores disparidades de salud oral raciales y étnicas entre los niños de 2 a 4 y 6 a 8 se ve en los niños mexicano-estadounidenses. Furthermore, when it comes to the adult population, the overall Hispanic population experiences poorer oral health when compared to other racial and ethnic groups
in the U.S. Since oral health is a crucial part of overall health, this has broad implications. It’s important to understand the cultural, environmental, behavioral, and other factors that create health disparities and bar groups from receiving oral health care. For example, migrant families have the tendency to think of themselves as “one unit,” and sometimes they do not access available health care programs because they assume that if one member does not qualify to receive health care, neither does the rest of the family. Alternately, from the health care point of view, thinking of the Hispanic family as “one unit” doesn’t always apply to migrant families, as it is common for these families to be mixed and have members who are U.S. citizens, U.S. residents, or have pending legal status. Therefore, different health programs could be available to different family members and providers and outreach programs should take this into account in their approaches. We must address the collective disparities that impact the Hispanic and other communities, and it is also important to be mindful of the uniqueness of each Hispanic family. Doing so will help us reach our goal for 2020.
