UNISON PRAYER: O Lord, you know the world in which we live. Our minds and hearts are bombarded by stories of violence and hurt, starvation and suffering, war and enmity throughout the world. You dwelt among us and lived the suffering of the human condition. You took upon yourself the weight of injustice and evil. You see the entire world in this moment and no instance of pain escapes your attention. We consider your cross, Jesus, and how hopeless it once Jan 30, 1211

appeared, and we marvel at your transforming power that brought about victory and new life from such a moment of darkness and despair. How we praise you, Lord Christ! We will say it again and again, “Jesus has triumphed! Jesus is exalted!” We trust in your everlasting triumph and look to you with hope. Grant us your grace to live well today in the midst of all this suffering. Teach us to live in a world so torn asunder. Help us to see how we can serve and proclaim your glorious GOOD NEWS to the suffering, the hungry, the imprisoned, and the sick in your name. We ask this in the Name of the one who has never lost a battle and who has taught to pray… THE LORD’S PRAYER SHARING IN CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP: For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18-24 Welcoming Our Visiting Friends Sharing of Our Testimonies, Joys and Blessings Sharing our Prayer Concerns THE CONGREGATION AT PRAYER PRAYER VERSE: For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:25-31 OFFERTORY VERSE: “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Insert Matthew presents Jesus as a Unique Savior. In Matthew 1, we see the Lord’s unique genealogy that goes all the way back to Abraham. In Matthew 2, we see the Lord’s unique infancy. Where people come all the way from the Eastern world to worship Him. In Matthew 3, we have the Lord’s unique baptism. Where we hear the voice of God and witness the anointing of the Holy Spirit. In Matthew 4, we have the Lord’s unique confrontation with the devil. Where Jesus defeats him and sends him away. And here in Matthew 5-7, we have the Lord’s unique teaching. The greatest sermon that’s ever been preached in the history of the world. The Sermon on the Mount. Jesus climbs up a mountain on the northern side of the Sea of Galilee. His disciples go to him. Jesus opens his mouth. He says “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Mat 5:1 And when He saw the multitudes, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 5:2 And opening His mouth He began to teach them, saying, (Blessings from God on kingdom attitudes) 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 5:4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5;5 "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 5:6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 5:7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 5:8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 5:10 "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Comment on final beatitude) 5:11 "Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me. 5:12 "Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. J.B. Phillips once rendered the beatitudes according to this world: Happy are the ‘pushers’: for they get on in the world. Happy are the hard-boiled: for they never let life hurt them. Happy are they who complain: for they get their own way in the end. Happy are the blasé: for they never worry over their sins. Happy are the slave-drivers: for they get results. Happy are the knowledgeable men of the world: for they know their way around. Happy are the trouble-makers: for they make people take notice of them. Jan 30, 1211

Consecration - To dedicate yourself completely to God’s purpose, priorities, processes, power and person. Learning to wholly trust in Jesus Christ for all aspects of life. To set oneself apart from the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life for the purpose of serving, loving and glorifying God with all one’s heart, soul, strength, and mind. We consecrate ourself to the Lord with our mind, emotions, will, attitude, behavior, resources, time, talents, relationships, vocation, skills, family, culture, finances, plans, priorities, service and lifestyle. Consecration is a moment by moment process of yielding all of our rights to the Lord. The daily renewal of our consecration is not by the flesh, but by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit as an act of worship. (Luke 10:27, Romans 12:1,2,1 Chron. 29:5, John 7:17, Luke 9:23, Phil. 3:10)
