How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him! Psalm 147:1 *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 84:1-12 (KJV) Leader: How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. People:

Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.

Leader: Selah.

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee.

People:

Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them. Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.

Leader: They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God. O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah. People:

All: glory:

Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

UNISON PRAYER: It is good to be here in your presence Lord. Here we are at home with each other and with you. Here we discover the joy of life and the strength to live each day with praise in our hearts to you. You alone are God and our Savior. You alone can show us the way to the life that lasts forever. We love you, Lord, —we give thanks to you for a song in our hearts. Our souls long for You; Our heart and our flesh sing for joy to you our living Lord. Blessed are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. Lord you are our shield and our defender. Guide us in times of trouble, through night of sorrow . Speak gently to us that we may hear. OFFERTORY: Philippians 2:5-11 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. RECORD OF FAITHFULNESS & STEWARDSHIP FOR: Sept. 21, 2014 ATTENDANCE: 55 / 60 115 TOTAL OFFERING: $ 3941.87 *GENERAL: $ 2453.00 DESIGNATED: $ 1488.87 * $3000 is needed each week in general funds to pay our bills. 2015 Proposed budget and Aug. Treasurer’s reports are on the back table. Men’s and Women’s Cell groups meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 6:00 PM in the Youth room and Conference room respectively. Come join us! All Welcome! Frequently Asked Questions re. charge conference and decision processes. 1. What happens at charge conference? DS Kofahl gives a devotional and the business decisions of the church are voted on by all present. All are welcome.

2. When are the salary decisions made? Salary levels are proposed by the staff/ parish committee, with guidance from the conference, and submitted to finance. Finance reviews and submits their proposal to Admin. Council. This is where those not involved in either staff parish or finance, can have a say. After the vote is taken at Admin. Council, this goes to the charge conference meeting. We should present a united position to the DS at this meeting. It is not the time for discussion. The next AC meeting is Oct. 9. All are invited to attend. The finance proposal will be put on the back table prior to this meeting.

3. When can I see the proposed budget for 2015? It is on the back table today. (Finance and treasurer reports are also put there for anyone who wants one.) The budget proposal will go to Admin Council on Oct. 9 at 6:30. That is the only time when your input can be shared. All are welcome.

4. Can I attend committee meetings? Yes, all committees are open to everyone. The exception is the Staff/Parish votes are in closed sessions but you can attend the first part and share any thoughts. Thank you to the staff parish and finance committee for their work on this budget and for keeping us on budget through the year.

Opportunities for Service & Fellowship Friday, Oct. 3 5:30 PM Soup swap and movie night. Please come ready to enjoy sampling different soups, salad, bread and dessert. Bring your favorite soup (crock pots work well for keeping them hot). Wednesday Midweek Fellowship. We meet every Wednesday for Bible Study at 6.30 PM. An exciting and provocative Bible study on the minor prophets of the Bible. Come Join us. Come share, rejoice. Pastor Brown will be leading this study. The Minor Prophets: God Still Speaks In the Minor Prophets, we will hear the voice of God speaking to us in a fresh way … as individuals and as a spiritual fellowship in the Church." S Session four – Obadiah - How God deals with pride In the introduction to this study series on the Minor Prophets we asked, "When did you last read Obadiah?" Sometimes we think, What message could we possibly find for today in a book like Obadiah? The Book of Obadiah has only 21 verses, and the theme of the book is the denunciation of Edom. In this study, we'll see why that matters to us.

Trunk or Treat We are hosting our SECOND ANNUAL “Trunk or Treat” event on Sunday, October 26th from 2:00-4:00pm. Trunk or Treat in a nutshell: Cars will be parked along the outside of the parking lot across the street with their trunks decorated and open so children can go “trunk or treating” from car to car in a safe, defined, open area. Decorations can be anything BUT scary, gory, bloody or inappropriate for families and children. Need some ideas??? How about:  Halloween/Fall theme  Christmas theme  Hunting theme  Birthday theme  Baby theme  Red, white and blue/patriotic theme  Wedding/anniversary theme Sept.28, 2014 UCUMC

6

 Farmer’s market theme  Favorite Sport’s Team theme  Be creative – look around the house and see what you have! Ok, once you have a theme picked out, come early on Sunday and be parked in the lot – NO LATER THAN 1:45pm. We don’t want ANY cars coming or going between 2:00 – 4:00pm when children are walking from car to car. Please plan to be in the lot early and decorate once you get here. Children and their families will be kept in the lot next to the church until 2:00pm SHARP! Once you’re decorated and ready to go, be ready for kids to come to your trunk and hand out your goodies to them. What roles are needed to make this event a success??  Someone to help with parking the cars in the big lot if they will be “ trunking” or direct them to the other lot if they are coming to participate in the “treating” part.  Someone else to assist families in crossing the street safely  We need some folks who are willing to take flyers and post them at local gas stations, stores, restaurants, etc. Or to hand them out where you work, work-out, meet your friends, etc.  We need lots of people willing to decorate their trunks and hand out goodies (Think of alternatives to candy, too – stickers, pencils, tracts, etc) while showing genuine, loving hospitality to all those who visit our church grounds.  Someone to accept pairs of shoes (for underdeveloped countries) and hand out glow necklaces  Someone to greet visitors, hand them an informational card and thank them for coming Is there a role that sounds good to you?? Please let me know how you can help with this church event. I look forward to offering our church grounds for a fun and safe alternative to the typical Halloween “trick or treating” that ends up being more “tricks” than “treats”!!! If you cannot help that day, consider bringing in a bag or two of treats to lighten the cost of those decorating trunks. They can be left in the food barrel any time in the Narthex. Please let me know how you can help and thank you in advance for your participation. Sept.28, 2014 UCUMC

Pastor’s Insert: The Autumn colors are splendid everywhere you go. The Lord of brilliant colors is displaying His Technicolor world all around us for His glory. Praise the Lord for the splendor of the season. It is the season of harvest, when all around is ripe. Praise the Lord for the fruits so variegated in color and in taste. Praise the Lord for the way the Lord remembers us with His bountiful blessings. The Lord of all seasons posts His signs, both visible and invisible, audible and inaudible all around us. He reminds us so eloquently how much we are loved and cared for and above all blessed. In his book, "The Great Divorce", C. S. Lewis described a young man who is tormented by a red lizard that sits on his shoulder and mocks him. For Lewis, the lizard represents the indwelling sin all of us struggle with. An angel comes and promises to get rid of the red lizard, and the man, for the moment, takes great joy in that. He's thrilled. I can be rid of this thing. And then he realizes the way the angel will get rid of it, as the angel begins to glow with a fiery heat. He will kill the lizard. Beginning to recognize the implications, the young man says, "Maybe you don't have to kill it. Maybe you don't have to get rid of it entirely. Can't we just do this another time?" The angel says, "In this moment are all moments. Either you want the red lizard to live or you do not." The lizard, recognizing the hesitation of the young man, begins to mock and plead at the same time. "Be careful. He can do what he says. He can kill me. One fatal word from you and he will. Then you'll be without me forever and ever. It's not natural. How could you live? You'll only be a sort of a ghost, not a real man as you are now. He doesn't understand. He's only a cold, bloodless, abstract thing. It may be natural for him, but it's not natural for us. I know there are no real pleasures, only dreams, but aren't they better than nothing? I'll be so good. I admit I've gone Sept.28, 2014 UCUMC

too far in the past, but I promise I won't do it again. I'll give you nothing but really nice dreams, all sweet and fresh and almost innocent. For C. S. Lewis, these words typify for all of us the way in which we compromise and allow indwelling sin in our lives. It is with such words that we allow the lizards of sin to live that torment us. It is written "So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking," (Ephesians 4:17). These are strong words. It always difficult to say to others--- we must not live as the rest of the world. The apostle knows he must say it: When we are really in Christ Jesus, we are walking a different path. May we continue to walk in His light and under His grace. May He provoke us to walk with joyfully, serve Him with self abandon... Looking unto Jesus the author and the pioneer of our faith. In Him, Brown
