Loaded Spartans hope to defend state crown

So what does a defending state champion with nearly every key piece returning expect to accomplish the following year?

“Trying to repeat: That’s the goal,” according Kerr-Vance baseball coach Dave Cline.

With four returning AllConference players — two of them Division I signees — and an All-Conference Coach of the Year at the helm, the Spartans may have what it takes to finish on top again. Kerr-Vance returns nearly every regular starter except graduated Tyler Overby.

After falling in Game 1 of the championship series 11-1 last season, the Spartans rallied for a 7-4 victory to force a deciding Game 3 — which they won handily, 12-1. The Spartans benefited from some gutsy performances along the way.

Early in the practice season, Cline thinks this year’s team may be even better than last season.

A scary thought.

“As good as they were, they look like they’re a lot better than they were last year. Even the underclassmen have gotten a lot better,” said Cline. “Everybody’s worked hard and it should be a fun season once we get everybody healthy.”

Team health will be the biggest concern for KVA early on. Pitcher, shortstop and East Carolina signee Tyler Bolton, the Player of the Year in the conference as well as the Dispatch All-Area Team, suffered a broken middle finger on his non-throwing hand toward the end of the basketball season.

Bolton was punishing at the plate and on the mound in 2010, breaking the school’s career home run mark while his fastball topped out near 90 mph.

Cline said Bolton is expected to be fully healed in six weeks.

“I’m thinking I want to hold him out as long as I can to make sure it’s ready, not to re-injure it.”

A big blow to the rotation will be the absence of Chandler Loyd for possibly the entire season.

Some rebuilding for Kerr-Vance softball

With several girls from last year’s team missing in action, Kerr-Vance softball coach Pat Pulley has a little rebuilding to do.

“We’ve got to get back to the drawing board, start from scratch,” she said.

The team will rely heavily on pitcher Hannah Powell this season. Powell will enter the circle this season for the second year as the Spartans’ primary hurler.

“We’re really looking for her to help carry the load,” said Pulley.

Other returning players Pulley will be looking to will be first baseman/catcher Jesse Edwards, third baseman Jordyn Steagall, and outfielders Lauren Wilkinson and Morgan King.

Numbers will again be an issue for KVA. Last year’s team had nine players total,

and had to play a few games down a girl, taking an out each time the ninth spot came to the plate.

“We’ve got 10 girls — one more than we did last year,” said Pulley.

Despite the numbers, KVA was competitive in the Eastern Plains Independent Conference. The Spartans took third in 2010.

Pulley expects Halifax Academy, last year’s firstplace team in the EPIC, to again be tough.

“We were third place last year, I’d like to be higher than that. I’d like to be one step or two steps higher than that,” said Pulley.

“We can do it if these girls apply.”

The Spartans hit the field Tuesday, March 8 on the road at North Raleigh Christian.

KVA track wants to build on success

With three athletes competing at the state level last year, Greg Carswell has high hopes for Kerr-Vance track in its fourth season.

Last year, Devonne Smith, Andy Johnson and Addison Mabry advanced to the state meet. Smith finished as state runner-up in the triple jump, with a distance of 41 feet, 2 inches.

“We’re really excited about his chances his senior year for coming back and maybe even winning it this year,” said third-year coach Carswell.

Mabry, then a seventh grader, competed in the 1600m and the 3200m.

Johnson took part in the shot put.

“Andy is continuing to improve on his sprints, and I think he’s going to have a good year too,” said Carswell. “He’s a year stronger and faster and I think he’s going to have a good year individually.”

Smith also ran the 100m dash and competed in discus and long jump.

This year sees the addi-

tion of junior Gerald Palmer and seventh grader Kayla Holder. Both are competent middle-distance runners.

“We ought to be very strong in the middle-distance events because Addison competed very well last year in middle distance,” said Carswell.

This past week was the first full week of practice for Palmer and Smith, who played basketball for KVA in the winter.

KVA does not compete against other Eastern Plains Independent Conference school because not every school has a track team.

Being a small team, Carswell knows it’s not really possible to win a team track meet against larger squads, but the coach is focused on individual improvement and competition — and getting Smith, Mabry and Johnson back to the state level.

“We’re looking forward to them returning, doing that again, and then the hope is the others can reach that goal as well,” he said.

ship series against Westchester Country Day and needed Tommy John surgery to repair it.

Loyd was crucial to the rotation in 2010, amassing an impressive win total as the team’s No. 3 starter.

A productive offensive presence, Cline still expects Loyd’s big bat in the lineup, but the senior will move to first base.

“Chandler can throw lightly and play a position and hit, but he’s not going to pitch. If at all, it’ll be late in the year,” he said.

Cameron Capell — a Pitt Community College signee — may step up to take Loyd’s spot in the rotation.

“I think Cameron’s going to be the No. 3 guy, but we really need Tyler to catch him. We’ve got to wait till he’s healthy before that can really materialize too,” said

Cline.

“We’re going to start off a little rough because we don’t have everybody ready to go right off the bat. By mid-season, we’re looking to be a pretty hard team to beat.”

Capell is a versatile leadoff man who can play several different positions on the field. Cline said he brings “leadership” to the team, and is an example to his teammates.

“Plus, he’s good as hell,” added Cline. “He keeps everybody in check. He’s going to let you know if you’re out of line. He’s just a leader.”

At the front of the rotation will be healthy southpaw John Allen — the hero of KVA’s state championship series. Bolton’s future Pirate mate combined to throw 10 innings in the Spartans’ victories in Games 2 and 3. He allowed no earned runs on two hits while striking out 15.

Cline knows the advantage of having a 1-2 combo like Allen and Bolton in the rotation is immeasurable.

“We’ve got guys that can pitch, but we don’t have guys that can pitch like that,” said Cline. “You got two D-I guys you can run out there, it makes a big difference.”

Cline expects EPIC foe St. David’s to be a tough out in 2011. The teams finished 1-2 in the confer-

ence, and KVA ended the Warriors’ season with a 5-1 win in Round 2 of the NCISAA state tourney.

“They’re very good, I think. St. David’s and us both thought we got a raw deal having to play each other in the playoffs when we did last year,” said Cline.

High Point’s Westchester may return a strong squad, as well as Southlake Christian out of Huntersville.

The Spartans have some tough non-conference matchups scheduled to prepare them for EPIC play, including North Davidson and Southern Nash. KVA will play in an Easter tournament in Tarboro, which includes some tough competition.

“We could wind up playing some guys there that are going to be high draft picks,” said Cline.

The tough schedule in and out of conference is what Cline hopes will prepare his squad for its ultimate purpose: Finding a way to Rocky Mount to play for a title in late May. “It’s not going to be a cakewalk, I can tell you that much. We’re going to have to work at it and we’re going to have to beat some good teams along the way if we’re going to repeat.”

Spartan netters field 3 seniors

Kerr-Vance tennis coach Dave Donaldson makes it clear he respects the competition.

“The first thing is that we play in the toughest conference in the state, with two of the top four teams in the state,” he said. “But Kerr-Vance is going to be good — how good remains to be seen.”

Last year, Eastern Plains Independent Conference opponent St. David’s finished second in the state, while Arendell Parrott took fourth.

“I think we’re going to be pretty strong. We’re going to shoot for second in the conference, which means we have to pass Parrott, which we didn’t do last year,” said Donaldson.

The coach said two of last year’s better players are not returning, but the 2011 squad sees strength in numbers. Fourteen Spartans have come out for tennis this year, ranging from seventh through 12th grade.

“I need strong leadership from them. I need to have them show the rest of these guys,” said Donaldson. “I need for them to be committed. I know it’s tough being a senior, getting ready to go off to college and get out of here.”

“They need to show the work ethic and be focused and do what they need to in practice and in the matches, and I think they will.”

Crews looks like the team’s No. 1 seed. Bugg is a likely 3 and King will be fourth.

Donaldson gained what he called an “unexpected bonus.” German foreign-exchange student Felix Grasshoff hasn’t played tennis in a few years, but the multisport athlete is expected to be the team’s fifth seed.

Junior Dylan Ellington is the No. 2 player, moving up from fourth. Dustin Evans will round out the likely top six.

Donaldson is intrigued with what he’s seen in early scrimmages.

“Good group of guys, they all get along together,” said Donaldson.

“Got a lot of them out for the first time this year, so there’s a lot of teaching going on, but Kerr-Vance is going to be in the thick of it.”

Lots of vets with Spartan soccer

Kerr-Vance soccer will feature some seasoned veterans peppered all over the field in 2011.

The Spartans have two senior midfielders, two senior defenders and one senior striker on the roster.

KVA coach Amy Steg hopes the team will benefit from having leadership mixed across the pitch.

Catherine Perry, Elizabeth Hill, Haley Ross, Catherine Gaby and Emily Adkins represent the senior class.

Multisport athlete Adkins was key for KVA last season. The Daily Dis-

patch All-Area selection was a presence on the offensive and defensive side. Sophomore Jessica Darnell had an impressive freshman campaign.

She returns in goal for the Spartans.

This year’s team also features a couple of freshman at the varsity and junior varsity level.

The competition level in the Eastern Plains Independent Conference is high. Last year, three EPIC teams made the state tournament. Secondseeded Cary Christian advanced to the state championship, where the Knights fell 1-0 to defending champion Calvary Baptist.

Cary finished the season 20-1-1.

“I’m expecting it to be a tough year,” said Steg. “It’s a tough conference to move into, but I think having one year under our belts playing these same teams (will help).”

Steg is hoping the team just finishes with more numbers in the win column in 2011.

“It’ll be tough. The schools that we play are around the Raleigh area with more strictly soccer players,” she said. “We just want to have a better record from last year, just hope to build on that.”

High hopes for Raider softball

KVA golf wants to keep winning tradition going

Losing a Division I golfer could hurt, but Dave Carrier’s Kerr-Vance golf program has built a rich tradition of competing at the highest level.

Even with state champion Beau Cutts’ departure to Wake Forest, KVA returns several guys who are primed to take the spotlight.

The Spartans will turn to 2009 state runner-up Ben O’Geary, lone senior Tripp Watkins and returner Russ Boyd to be consistent scoring threats.

“We’re real excited,” said Carrier. “I know we lost Beau Cutts and a couple of other guys that were key for us last year, but we feel very excited about what we do have.”

O’Geary and Watkins are All-State golfers and were a part of KVA’s backto-back state championship seasons. Boyd also brings experience to the course.

“I’m thinking (Boyd) has a good chance to be an All-State player himself,” said Carrier. “They’re all strong players and we just feel confident that they’ll lead us.”

Seasoned golfers Brandon Dickerson and Daniel Burnette return for KVA. Promising seventh grader Joseph Burnette rounds out the roster.

“I think we have three players that will play with any top three in the state.

Out of the next three, we need at least one of those to step up each match,” said co-coach Sam Brummitt.

“I’m looking forward to the season... I’m sure we’ll miss (Cutts), but we’ve got some other guys that are ready to step up.”

Carrier said he’s especially interested to see what Watkins accomplishes this season as the team’s lone senior.

“I believe that’s just going to make Tripp better.

The leadership always falls on a senior and he knows that,” said Carrier. “No one hits the ball farther. He’s really starting to learn to think his way around a golf course a little better.”

“The sky’s the limit for him, without a doubt.”

The goal for KVA remains the same: Win the Eastern Plains Independent Conference and then the NCISAA tournament.

Both will be tall orders.

“Our conference is so strong. If you win our conference, you’ve got a good chance to do very well in the state, so we’ll get tested,” said Carrier.

The schedule includes some 3A private schools, but the bulk of the competition will come at the EPIC meets, where KVA will go head to head with traditional power Arendell Parrott.

Parrott was KVA’s chief rival in 2010. KVA finished second, one slot ahead of Parrott, at the state meet.

Westchester Country Day took first.

“It’s almost like a state meet every time we go out for a conference match,” said Carrier. “We’re kind of lucky in that standpoint that they get tested.”

With a strong retuning corps that includes standout pitcher Jordan Garrett, Southern Vance softball may have what it takes to make a deep postseason run.

The Raiders lost two to graduation, but return a loaded lineup for the 2011 edition.

“I think that we’re going to be the team to beat (in the conference),” said coach Leann Shelton.

Last year, in Shelton’s first season at the helm, the Raiders were eliminated in the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs on the road against eventual champ Southwest Randolph.

“I just feel like we’ve got a big group out here that has been playing together for years, and they’re really pumped up this year. They have a lot of high expectations for themselves,” said Shelton.

“It’s going to be a good year, I know it is.”

Leading the charge will be Garrett, the Raiders’ strikeout specialist and the team MVP of the last few years.

Garrett is entering her senior season.

“We’re going to beat 320 strikeouts this year,” Shelton said of Garrett. “I just expect her to be a leader, not just on the mound but hittingwise, attitude — just everything.

I expect her to lead the team. Her attitude reflects a lot on how they play.”

Adcock, Lindsey Carroll and Samantha Patrick. Also joining the Raiders from Kerr-Vance is Kaylan Hoyle, who played on the Babe Ruth 16U World Series championship team, and Jessica Ellington, a power-hitting transfer from J.F. Webb.

“We have lots of talent, we’ve just got to find what is their right spot,” said Shelton. “We have a lot more speed this year and that is a blessing to me.”

“They’re all familiar with each other, they’re working good together.

I’m just glad we’ve got some speed this year.”

The team also had five or six

freshmen come out for this year’s squad.

“I’m trying to build the team for next year too,” Shelton said.

The coach feels that Northern Vance and J.F. Webb will be the toughest Carolina 3A Conference opponents this season.

Last year’s games between the Henderson rivals didn’t disappoint.

The Vikings swept the series, winning both games 1-0 in extra innings — including a 16-inning classic at Northern.

McGhee, SV prepping for first game

Tony McGhee’s done a good bit in a small amount of time.

The hire of Southern Vance’s new baseball coach was approved after the preseason already began, leaving the new skipper with a shorter timetable to work with a team that lost quite a few contributors from last season.

McGhee planned on making cuts in the middle of the week. Southern’s first week of games were all postponed — there will be no forfeits — and the Raiders’ first game is scheduled for Tuesday at home against Southern Nash.

“Everybody’s working hard, we’re dedicating a lot of time to infield and our outfield work, and a lot of (batting practice),” said McGhee.

Gone from this year’s team is workhorse hurler Caleb Garrett.

McGhee will be looking to get some innings out of returning starter Brandon Crews and Zach Layne, as

well as sophomore Justin Roberson.

Freshman Kyle Lawrence has been a “pleasant surprise” throwing in the bullpen.

McGhee said he’s working with left-handers Ian Metcalf and Matthew Reed to mix in some southpaw pitchers.

“They’re definitely going to get some innings,” he said.

McGhee Offensively, Southern will look to benefit from a speedy lineup.

Nunu Henderson provided a burst at the leadoff spot last season.

McGhee said Cameron Eatmon, Melvin Gray and Latrel Fields could each do some damage on the basepads.

“This team is fast. If we can get to first base or get people in scoring position — we’re fast,” said McGhee.

McGhee said Henderson, Eatmon, Crews, Jeremy Bullock and

Dylan Hoyle should be solid presences at the plate.

“I really think we’ll surprise some people,” he said.

Competing in the Carolina 3A Conference will be no cakewalk.

Chapel Hill returns a significant number of returners from a solid team. Jeff Tate has built a consistent program at J.F. Webb, and a young Northern Vance team could be much-improved.

“A successful season for us is going to be if these guys get better every practice, every game, that by the time we get to conference play, we can play right with them,” said McGhee.

The coach said winning the conference is always a goal, but the main focus will be to finish in the top three to earn a state playoff bid.

“That’s going to be tough. We’re going to have to play,” he said.

“You’ve got to be ready to play every conference game.”

Girls look to seniors; boys need experience

There will be two notable absences on Southern Vance’s girls’ track and field squad this year, but the Raiders have quite a few potent athletes returning.

State champions Tremanisha Taylor and Shauna Terry — titlewinners in the discus and triple jump, respectively — have graduated and taken their talents to Division I programs.

Southern will be looking to a solid group of veterans, including Shakiyla Hicks, Jamila Mann, Cierra Ellis, Tiara Jordan and Waynisha Hargrove, to make up for their absence.

“To replace Shauna and Trem as far as leadership, it’s going to take a collective effort from our seniors,” said Roger Williams.

“Shauna and Trem, they were tremendous leaders on and off the track and field. They excelled in the classroom, they excelled in their events, so it’s going to

be hard to replace them.”

“The seniors that I have returning, they’ll be up to the task.”

The Raiders will have one other big change in 2011. Williams, last year’s head coach who has been assisting with the team so far this year, is stepping down. Petronia Hicks will take over the reigns.

Hicks has been a part of Raider track and field for the past 11 years, Williams said, and was a part of the 2003 NCHSAA state championship team.

“She’s going to be a great fit for the ladies,” said Williams. “I wanted to leave the program with someone that’s been around the program, knows what to expect out of them and will push them like I push them.”

Williams said Southern has several sprinters he expects to make noise at the regional and state level.

“They’ve been working hard in the offseason, some ran summer track,” he said.

“I’m expecting big things for the girls this year.”

In the Carolina 3A

Conference, Williams said Cardinal Gibbons has a new track coach, Northern Vance has a solid group of freshmen coming in and Orange and Chapel Hill should be good.

“The conference is wide open. Of course, I like to think that we’re the favorite being that I have three, maybe five girls that have got experience in the conference, know what it takes to win and were part of the conference championship team last year. It’s up for grabs this year,” he said.

While the girls have a solid corps, Ken Bulluck’s boys’ squad has only a few returning athletes.

Though he said he had the largest first-day turnout yet, only five or six have track and field experience.

“The first thing I have to do is teach them what the events are,” Bulluck said with a laugh.

“It’s like I told them... we will be a work in progress right up until the end of April. We just haven’t done this before, and that’s the exciting part, to see what

they can become. I know that we have some talent because of football and basketball. It’s my job to try to figure out where to put them in the best position to be successful.”

Returning athletes expected to make an impact include Chris Henderson and Tyriek Branch, regional qualifers in sprint relays in 2010, Ahmad Campbell in the 200m and 400m, and Adris Ragland, who anchored the 800m and 1600m relays.

Basketballers Eric Hargrove and B.J. Reavis are “quality, experienced jumpers” who will add depth in the sprint events.

As far as conference competition goes, Bulluck knows where the toughest challenge will come from.

“I think that Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill have won the state cross country championship for like, the last 10 years, so they always are among the best in the state,” he said.

Nelson ‘coming home’ to coach Viking baseball

Once a Viking, always a Viking.

Northern Vance graduate and first-year head coach Benji Nelson is returning to his old stomping grounds after seven years as head coach across town at Southern Vance, the last year coming in 2009.

“I had some good times over there, had some good teams and I enjoyed my stay over there,” said Nelson. “It feels good to put back on the blue and gold again.”

Nelson is relieving Mike McCutcheon, who was at the helm of the program for over a decade.

“I have to thank Coach (David) Hicks for asking me to do this, and some people like Jeff Tate and Steve Chandler, just people who have helped me throughout my baseball career and coaching.

They’ve been some really good help to me,” Nelson said.

The Vikings lost only one senior, Zack Orr, from 2010 and have a graduating class of three for 2011.

Northern netters need to rebuild

Northern Vance tennis coach Jeff Athurs has a lot of rebuilding to do.

Arthurs lost seven seniors from last season’s team that finished third in the Carolina 3A Conference behind state powers Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill.

“We lost just about the whole team,” said Arthurs.

“We’ve got some rebuilding to do, but we’ve got some young players and they’re getting better every day.”

Despite losing seven, Arthurs does have good numbers this season.

“We always seem to have a lot of people that want to play,” he said.

“So that’s good, I think that says a lot about the program.”

Arhurs is still mixing

and matching his seeds, but expects Sam Long, Barrett Johnson, Ethan Byrom and Tyler Manning to be “somewhere near the top.”

The Vikes have one senior, Tim Nicholson, and two juniors.

“We want to get better every day and build a strong program for the future for all of these young guys,” said Arthurs.

With such tough competition at the top of the league, Arthurs is making his goals both realistic and optimistic.

“We’d like to be third again,” he said. “It’s tough with Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill both ranked in the top 10 to start the season. But we hope to be third.”

Nelson expects the Seagrave twins to have an immediate impact. Zach, a southpaw pitcher, has been most impressive at the plate and will likely play first when not on the mound.

“He really swings the bat well,” said Nelson. “I’m excited about this guy. He’s really been impressing me in practice as far as BP.”

Nelson said Charlie has shown promise behind the plate, gunning down runners in a recent scrimmage against Louisburg.

Around the horn, Trey Stainback will see time at first base and as a designated hitter.

“I really need Trey’s bat in the lineup, he swings well,” said Nelson.

Barry Purnell will play at second base, with the ability to fill in on the left side of the infield. Henry Raynor will patrol the infield at shortstop and Zach Pegram will man the hot corner. Travon Scott, Tyquan Bryant and John Nelson make up the Viking outfield.

“Them guys can fly, man,” Nelson said of the trio. “I told them as fast as they are, I don’t want a fly ball dropping. Having that speed in the outfield to run balls down is really going to help us.”

Nelson’s pitching rotation won’t be the high school equivalent of the Philadelphia Phillies, but he does have numbers.

“I wouldn’t call them pitchers,” he said. “I’ve got about six or seven guys that can throw strikes. That’s always a plus, no matter what level it is.”

Add in a couple of talented freshmen in Matthew McCutcheon and Nate Arrington and Northern could be poised for a playoff run.

“Our goal is to make the playoffs, Nelson said. “If we don’t make the playoffs, I’m going to be disappointed. We have the potential, the potential is there. It’s just going out there and playing hard and executing.”

Along the way, Nelson is hoping career win No. 100 will be one of the highlights of the season, and he’s only a few games away from that mark as he embarks on his homecoming season.

“It’s like coming home,” he said.

“I guess you could say, once a Viking, always a Viking.”

Viking soccer returns 14

Northern Vance soccer must replace its top scorer (Emily Ellington) and defender (Hannah Perkinson) from 2010, but the Vikings have 14 returning players waiting in the wings.

Next season, Northern could be replacing its coach, David Hicks, if the current school board policy stands on not allowing county athletic directors to coach. The policy is set to go into effect in June.

But Hicks isn’t letting those matters distract him in what could be his final season as Vikings coach.

“I’m looking forward to the season for a lot of reasons,” he said. “I’ve always sort of approached every season the same.”

Hicks said he wants his girls to be competitive and learn the game of soccer, just like every other season.

Leading the way will be six seniors: Katie Childers, Caitlin Cockrell, Katie Wilson, Mary Catherine Lemmond, Taylor Noel and Katelyn Kimbrell.

“They’re very familiar with the program, with what we try to do and how we try to do it,” Hicks said of the group. “I really expect them to be the vocal leaders and the mental leaders.”

Childers will return to goal this

season, while Wilson will be a welcomed readdition to Northern’s midfield after breaking her leg early last season in the Burger King Classic.

Cockrell, Lemmond and Noel join Wilson in the midfield and Kimbrell will see action in the top of the formation.

Kimbrell will be paired at the front with Gabby Matthews, who had an impressive freshman campaign in 2010.

“She’s got some goal-scoring tendencies,” Hicks said of Matthews.

“She should produce some goals for us.”

Hicks expects Rebecca Falkner to patrol both the midfield and defense and has been impressed in the preseason with sweeper and newcomer Tanaua White.

Last season, Northern finished fifth in conference play.

“I think we can certainly do better than that,” said Hicks, who expects Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill to be dominant.

SV tennis heads into Year 2 under Talley

With several players from last year’s team graduated, Southern Vance tennis will turn to some returners as well as some new faces in 2011.

Last year’s team featured one returning sophomore with experience. The Raiders come into this season with a full year under their belts with coach Jason Talley.

“We do have a few returning players. It’s still a small team, it’s going to be pretty strong though,” said Talley. “We have a couple of new guys that we’re really looking forward to getting out there on the court and seeing what they can do.”

Talley is in his second year coaching at Southern. Eric Person, Justin Tabourn, Herman Alston, Michael Lewis and Donald Hedgepeth are his returning players.

When the team gathered for a photo in late

February, the Raiders were still working on figuring out the seedings.

“We’ve got a rough estimate but nothing set in stone.”

In the meantime, with the first match scheduled March 8, the Raiders are hitting the court in preparation, honing their skills and shaking off any rust.

“Our singles game is looking pretty strong. A lot of their serves have gotten a lot more power behind them since last year, so mostly what we’re going to focus on is our net game and strengthening our doubles teams,” said Talley.

Talley’s Raiders compete in the Carolina 3A Conference, which consists of perennial powers Cardinal Gibbons and Chapel Hill, but Talley isn’t deterred.

“I think we’re going to give them a run for their money,” he said.

Southern Vance soccer faces a few questions that need answering in the season’s early going.

Coach Mike Bertner has nine “solid returners” and a lot of new blood with a “lot of raw talent.”

“We definitely did lose some linchpins, people who have played positions for the four years that I’ve been coaching,” said Bertner. “So this is going to be kind of a new discovery in figuring out where we can move people, different things we can do. But it’s also exciting because we get to change things up.”

In the early stages, Bertner said his team will need to figure

out how the team dynamic has changed as well as determine which players belong where on the pitch.

“Just kind of get our alchemy together,” he said.

Bertner has high expectations for Rachelle Sandarelli and Evianey Carrillo. Both are four-year returning players. All-Conference goalkeeper Taylor Stanton returns between the posts in 2011. Jessica Farrelly is a strong defensive player.

Haley Orr provides “probably the most energy I’ve ever seen in a soccer player,” said Bertner.

The coach likes what he’s seen in practice so far.

“I think I see a lot of strong feet. I see a lot of good lungs,

good staying ability, so I think we’re going to be very competitive this year,” he said.

“All of my returners and all of my new people are going to do great things.”

In the competitive Carolina 3A Conference, the Raiders will be matched up against tough Triangle-area schools Cardinal Gibbons, Chapel Hill and Orange, as well as local rivals Northern Vance and J.F. Webb.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but we’re looking to surprise some people and come out and give a strong showing,” said Bertner.

Raider golf must start on ‘ground floor’

As Mike Rotolo embarks on his 20th season leading the Southern Vance golf program, the veteran coach must start on the “ground floor” in 2011.

The Raiders have one guaranteed returner in Dustin Null. Two other potential returners may play other sports, leaving Rotolo with very little experience.

“We’re still in the building stages,” he said.

Null is entering his third season in the program.

“He’s steadily improving and he’s developing a passion for the game,” said Rotolo.

Rotolo said he does expect to have about five or six golfers as the season goes on.

“It sounds like there is some interest,” he said.

Rotolo said he expects tough

competition again in conference play for the Raiders, who finished last in the 2010 Carolina 3A Conference standings.

“In the past, some of the teams have been very good,” he said. “I’m not sure where we are this year.”

Added Rotolo: “The goal is to get as many folks involved as possible and rebuild the program.”

Webb wants another playoff bid

Replacing seven seniors won’t be easy, but J.F. Webb coach Jeff Tate is hoping a productive offseason will spell success for his Warrior baseball team in 2011.

Tate has guided Webb to four consecutive postseason appearances, the longest stretch in school history. Last season, the Warriors (16-9) finished second in the conference before being eliminated in the second round of the NCHSAA playoffs by No. 1 Western Alamance.

“I think this group wants to show they’re as good a group as the teams we’ve had in the past few years,” said Tate.

Gone from 2010 are three Division I players (Ryan Allen, Dylan Newton, Trey Talley).

Newton and Allen were the staff aces, although Allen missed much of the season on the mound with an arm injury. An injury to Talley also kept him off the bump and limited the current UNC-Greensboro Spartan at catcher.

But Tate said the silver lining to last season’s injury bug is the experience gained by the replacements.

This year’s team is comprised of six seniors (Patrick Whitt, Dustin Adcock, Adam Currin,

Kyle Watson, Zack Morris, Joseph Capps), seven juniors and one sophomore.

Tate’s group doesn’t have a wealth of experience on the field in NCHSAA play, but the Warriors have been hard at work in legion and fall play. All but three players logged innings in about 60 games in the offseason.

“I hope all that will pay off,” Tate said. “We did some really good things in the summer and in the fall.”

Without the power arms of Allen and Newton, Tate doesn’t expect to be able to consistently

silence opponents’ batting orders. Instead, Webb will likely be pitching by committee.

“I don’t know that we’re really going to stop anybody, but we’ve got guys that throw strikes,” said Tate.

Leading the way will be three of the seniors: Currin, Adcock and Whitt.

Tate believes he has about seven arms that he can throw, including Stephen Hill and Dylan Wheeler, who will come on in relief. Lance Ellington should also see some starts as well as long relief.

Tate isn’t expecting

a powerful offense, but is hoping to be able to manufacture plenty of runs, led by a speedy top of the order.

Tate called outfielders Morris and Ty Womack “arguably the two fastest players on the team.”

Womack and Hill will fit in at the top, followed by Morris in the 3-hole.

“We’ve got some guys that can really run,” said Tate. “We’re going to have to play that way to win some games.”

Capps, a first baseman and outfielder, should be the cleanup hitter.

Defensively, Webb lost its corner outfielders and infielders from last season, but are strong and experienced up the middle.

Hill (SS) and Whitt (2B) will man the middle with Morris patrolling center field. Currin, who stepped in for Talley in 2010, is back behind the plate along with sophomore David Watson.

Wheeler, Chris Drake, Jordan Adcock, and Kyle Watkins will fill the remaining holes.

Tate said he expects defending Carolina 3A Conference champ Chapel Hill to be the favorite this year and called Northern Vance a “team to look out for.”

Viking softball younger in 2011 Northern vying for third consecutive conference crown

Northern Vance softball coach John Russell tells his team it’s not where they start, but where they finish.

Russell’s Vikings finished on top last season as undefeated conference champions. Northern swept rival Southern Vance in two classic, extra-inning games before being knocked out of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs in the second round.

This year, Northern starts with only two seniors: Sekeedrah Alston and Ciarea Thompson.

Ace pitcher Jessica Rowland, third baseman Ashley McGhee and first baseman Amanda Bullock have all graduated.

Last season, Thompson, Rowland, McGhee, Bullock, Kendall Wilson and Hannah Thompson were All-Conference selections.

“Young, but also at the same time, I feel like we’re kind of experienced,” said Russell, the reigning Carolina 3A Conference Coach of the Year.

“I’ve got a lot of girls that are going to step in that weren’t starters last year that will be starters this year.”

moving over from second base to assume Rowland’s former duties.

Rowland was named Player of the Year in the conference last season.

“Jessica was a big part of our accomplishments the last two years, but I have no reservations about Red (Edwards) stepping in and picking up where Jess left off,” said Russell. “It’s her spot. It’s her team.

I gave her the ball and asked her to lead us. For the last four months, she’s been working very hard on her game and you can tell it’s paid off for her.”

Ciarea Thompson has pegged down center field and Kara Reese is expected to play behind the plate.

After that, several freshmen, along with Katie Smith, Melissa Elliott and Harley Parrott, are among those competing for starting jobs.

The Vikings may be young, but Russell’s goals haven’t changed.

“That’s something that we talk about almost daily,” Russell said. “Our goals are still the same and that’s to 3-peat. No change in our goals.”

Northern won the MidState 3A Conference title in Russell’s first season in 2009 before last season’s championship.

And as far as Russell is concerned, the Vikes still own the title until it is taken away.

“We’ve won conference in 2009, last year we swept the conference,” he said. “I would like to think that it’s our conference.”

Vikings want to return to regionals

Northern Vance golf is eyeing a return to the NCHSAA regionals.

Last season, the Vikings made an improbable rally to catch J.F. Webb in the conference standings.

The Warriors held a 20-shot lead entering the final Carolina 3A meet, but Northern caught up, finishing two shots ahead of its rivals from Oxford at Kerr Lake Country Club.

The Vikings have lost one senior, Kevin Byrom, and their head coach, Tommy Overcash, from last season.

Byrom missed the first two conference meets with a broken leg, but returned to the links mid-season to help lift the team into regionals.

Tommy Overcash is succeeded at head coach by Angela Gorney, a biology teacher at Northern.

“I played sports growing up. I’ve never coached before, but I always wanted to get the opportunity,” said Gorney. “Being a teacher kind of leads into that. I’m really excited, we’ve got some good players.

We’ve got three seniors coming back.”

Gorney will look to those seniors: Tate Frazier, David Porter and Bryson Faulkner to guide the rest of the squad.

“Especially having never coached before, I’m going to look to them to lead the team,” said Gorney.

Frazier, one of the top performers in the conference last season, led Northern with an 80 in the Burlington regionals last year. Previously, Frazier was a back-to-back all-league golfer in the Mid-State 3A Conference.

Gorney is hoping the new faces on the team will ensure that Northern won’t have to come from so far behind this season.

“The goals for the team are to play well, have good sportsmanship, of course we always want to be competitive and go to regionals, go to states and stand out in our sport,” she said.

New coach Harris at the helm for Northern track

Northern Vance has a new face leading both the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams — but a familiar one within the Viking coaching fraternity.

Darian Harris, hired as football coach last summer, will guide both teams, replacing former boys’ coach Cedric Crudup and former girls’ coach Wilton Baskett.

“I keep hearing it’s a great tradition in track, boys and girls,” said Harris. “I’ve seen some good things out of the guys in the couple of weeks we’ve been together and I’m expecting big things. The kids are excited about it.”

Harris graduated from Durham Hillside in 1994 and played football at Howard.

A late addition as coach, Harris is a little unfamiliar with his teams, Harris but says he should have plenty of returners.

“I think we have more returning than we lost,” he said.

Harris said sprints and relays should be the strong points.

“We’re still trying to develop our hurdlers and our jumpers,” he said. “In the field, we’re still trying to develop some of our throwers.”

Harris is expecting Chapel Hill and Cardinal Gibbons to again be the top teams in the conference.

“They do so well in the middle distance on up,” he said. “They get so many points in the pole vault and those things we don’t compete in and before you know it, the dual meet is over.”

As for team goals, Harris just wants his athletes to relish competition.

“Being competitive, taking the competitions personally, coming out and doing their best every day and the rest is going to take care of itself,” he said.

Webb coach feels this year’s softball may be best

J.F. Webb coach Larry Salisbury thinks he might have the best softball team in school history this season.

“How that translates into the win/loss column, we’ll find out,” he said.

The Warriors narrowly missed their first-ever playoff bid last season, falling in a playin game to Cardinal Gibbons.

Webb graduated three players from last year and lost first baseman Jessica Ellington as a transfer to Southern Vance.

But Salisbury is optimistic about what he has returning.

“We’ve got more experience than we’ve ever had,” he said. “We’ve got more pitching than we’ve ever had as far as numbers. We’re really looking

Satterwhite will be joined

on the mound this season by Crossroads Christian transfer Morgan Davis.

“It helps anytime you have more than one pitcher,” said Salisbury. “I know some teams will ride more than one horse the whole time. It’s got to help to be able to take a break from that and just relax and play softball and come back and focus when it’s your time in the circle again.”

When Davis isn’t in the circle, she’ll spend time at first base and outfield.

“They’re great friends,” Salisbury said of Satterwhite and Davis. “They pull for each other and when one is pitching, the other one’s playing her heart out somewhere else. All these girls pull for each other.

It’s been great, the chemistry so far.”

“What we’re really excited about is our offense has improved from last year,” said Farabee.

Leading the attack will be Matt Nott, Landon Williams and Matt Roach.

Longtime J.F. Webb tennis coach Will Darden is anticipating another tough season in the Carolina 3A Conference — and the Warriors don’t have much experience to combat the stiff competition.

“We’re starting over. Put it that way,” said Darden. “It’s going to be uphill. Cardinal Gibbons is usually a state power, Chapel Hill’s boys’ team is usually a state power — that’s just the kind of conference we’re in. It’s feast or famine.”

Year 2 of J.F. Webb lacrosse could be an exciting one.

The Warriors’ numbers are up nine from last year, giving coach David Farabee enough athletes to field a junior varsity team. Both teams will have 18 players.

“It’s very exciting for us because obviously the boys on JV get to play a lot more than they would if they were on varsity and it’s better all around for development, so we’re real, real excited,” said Farabee.

But numbers aren’t the only thing Farabee has to be excited about this season.

The coach said several of his players have participated in offseason leagues in Durham — and the experience is paying dividends.

Webb went 4-0 at a recent preseason scrimmage held at Cedar Ridge.

“It’s a good sign that we’ve improved a lot,” Farabee said. “Our expectations are to be much more competitive this year. We won’t talk so much about will we win so many games — it’s more, are we going to be competitive?”

Webb won two games in its inaugural season.

Farabee said the 2011 schedule

Davis and Hayes Moss, who is also expected to catch, will replace Ellington at first.

Kali Puckett and Allie Hobgood will compete for time at second base and Moore and Brooke Wheeler will see time at shortstop.

Wheeler will also move over to third base, joining Arneth.

Salisbury called his outfield a strong one, led by Newton and Brooks.

Last season, the Warriors lost nine games by a total of 11 runs.

Salisbury expects Southern Vance to be the team to beat in 2011.

“I think everybody else is going to kind of be even this year,” he said.

Frazier and Tanner LaLonde.

Darden is expecting Chacko to be his No. 1, followed by Frazier and Jordan Fredericks. LaLonde, playing in his first season, should fill in at No. 4.

“After that, we don’t know,” Darden said. “We’re looking for a couple of guys to step up.”

Webb will need to take big steps to compete in the Carolina 3A Conference. The Warriors finished fifth in 2010.

The goals for Darden this season are simple: Don’t finish last and be competitive.

“Don’t finish last if we can help it, try to be respectable and competitive

with the teams in this three-county area: Warren County, Vance County, Granville County, even Person County,” he said. “Be competitive — not saying we’re better than them — just be competitive. And when we go south to Orange County, Raleigh and Chapel Hill, understand that it’s a different world.”

“We have to win on nights when we’re playing somebody that’s feasible for us to beat,” Darden added.

“When we’re playing teams that are really a lot better than us, we just need to relax and get through it.”

J.F. Webb is looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking conclusion to the 2010 season. The Warriors appeared well on their way to a regional appearance last year before rival Northern Vance made an improbable rally at the final Carolina 3A Conference meet.

Webb led Northern by 20 shots entering the final competition, but the Vikings made up the difference and locked up the third and final regional spot.

The Warriors lost regional participant Kenny Forbes from that team, but are returning senior Tyler Overton and added Kerr-Vance transfer Sonny Burnette.

Coach John Hunt called Overton “one of the most talented golfers in the conference” and expects he and Burnette to be his top two.

Overton is a two-time all-conference player and Burnette was an important contributor to KVA’s second-place finish in the

Senior Shea Stepusin, sophomore Will Perkinson and freshman Taylor Cook will likely be the top-5 scorers. Will Yeargin and Grant Parrott round out the squad.

“If we’re going to be successful, these guys have to learn to play as a team,” said Hunt.

Hunt said he was impressed with his team’s showing at a recent scrimmage at Lake Winds Golf Course against Durham Riverside and Northern Durham.

Hunt also said he expects Cardinal Gibbons to again field a strong team.

“He’s always loaded, he always is,” Hunt said of Crusaders coach Robert Guzzo. “You won’t find a better program. It should be an interesting year with Cardinal Gibbons head and shoulders above everybody else.”

Hunt added that he fully expects his Warriors to compete for a regional bid.

Draffin, Diamond Eagles hope history repeats in 2011 Eagles return 1 varsity player

Warren County’s baseball team made history last season, clinching a state playoff berth for the first time in school history.

The Eagles have a lot of work to do if history is going to repeat itself in 2011. Third-year coach Pat Draffin has one returning varsity player, outfielder Matthew Smiley, from 2010.

Warren County lost eight seniors to graduation and two transfers to Northern Vance, but Draffin is confident in the direction the program is headed.

“I think we’ll be a competitive baseball team,” he said. “We’ll win some games that we shouldn’t Draffin and we’ll probably lose some games that we shouldn’t, but that’s baseball.”

The Eagles have five seniors: Smiley, Zach Harris, Travis Felts, Jelan Seward, and Harris Johnson.

Johnson, Travis Felts and Johnson are all call-ups from junior varsity.

Smiley, Seward and Johnson make up the outfield. Harris will man third base and Phillip Bailey will play first.

Draffin is most comfortable with his pitching staff, who will most frequently be caught by sophomore Colby Ryder.

“We’ve got a lot of kids who want to pitch, who can pitch,” he said. “They just need a lot of fine-tuning.”

Harris got a couple of nods on the mound last season and will be joined in the rotation by newcomer Will Lynch and junior A.J. Silver, who returns to

WC track wants to build on last season

The Warren County track and field teams are looking to build on solid 2010 seasons in the Northern Carolina 2A Conference.

The Eagle boys finished third and the girls took fourth in league play.

Coach Erick Williams’ boys will have a little more rebuilding to do than coach Morton Jones’ girls, who lost only two seniors.

“We do have some speed coming back out,” said Williams. “It’s going to be a rebuilding year this year.

We just have to weed out some of the dead weight.

Hopefully, we can provide a quality track team like we did last year.”

Williams has some big holes to fill, including the one left by Dion Hargrove, who advanced to the state finals in the high jump.

The boys will be led by

seniors Benjamin Bullock, Justin Hunt, Breon Reed, and Sean Brake.

“Sprinting is always a strong point here,” said Williams. “We’ve got some quick kids, not only fast, but very, very quick.”

Williams is also expecting his jumpers to be strong and the addition of field coach Waverly Jackson to have a positive impact on the team.

Williams added that the track program at Warren County serves as an offseason training ground for other Eagle sports.

“We utilize track here at Warren County, not only to build upon those kids that actually enjoy track, but it will also help our football programs and our basketball programs, especially with the guys staying in shape. That’s mainly what we’re looking for,” he said.

Jones has his sights set high for the Eagle girls.

“Everybody is pretty

much back from last year,” he said. “This is our best chance to win the conference.”

Last season, the 4x200m relay team won the conference title and the 4x100 took second.

“We had quite a few kids in the regionals (last year),” said Jones. “Unfortunately, the other people in the other part of the region are pretty fast and we didn’t do as well as we had hoped to.”

Jones is looking heavily to Sekedria Hicks, last year’s conference long jump champion.

Jones is also expecting big things in the field events with an experience group leading the way.

“We’re a senior-laden group this year,” Jones said.

“We’re definitely depending on them to get our points for us this year.”

Roles reversed for Webb track

Last season, the J.F. Webb girls’ track team boasted a wealth of experience, while the boys’ team was short on leadership.

Both teams finished fourth place in the conference, but this year, the roles are reversed for girls’ coach Bryant Blackwell and boys’ coach Kenneth Rogers.

Blackwell has just one senior, Bianca Harris, and Rogers is missing only one key contributor, Thomas Stainback, who made it to the regionals as a sprinter last year.

“We’re very excited about this year because anytime you have a chance to move forward and do a better job than you did in the previous season, it’s always a great opportunity to do better than we did last season,” said Rogers.

And Rogers thinks they will do better, led by a group of six seniors.

“Anytime you have six seniors, you’re looking for some good leadership,” he said. “We’re happy to have so much experience returning.”

Rogers is looking to Kentrell Fields, who runs in the 100 and 200m to be one of those leaders.

Calvon Bowden could represent Webb’s best chance to win an individual conference title in the 300 intermediate hurdles, the 110 high hurdles and the 400m.

Rogers also cited Jeffrey Bumpass as a key performer in the 100 and 200m as well as the high jump.

K.J. Rogers gives the Warriors a talented longdistance runner in the 800m and one-mile events.

Webb should be much stronger in the field this season with Hosea Gibson in the long jump and Anthony McKinney in the triple and

long jump.

Once again, finishing in the top two is a tall, if not insurmountable task.

“It’s always tough to finish above Chapel Hill and Cardinal Gibbons because they have established programs, but I think that we could push for third,” said Rogers.

Harris will be Blackwell’s leader for the girls. She’s the lone runner returning from a Warrior regional relay team in 2010.

“She’s improved a lot because she’s been running all summer long, Blackwell said. “She’s going to be the senior leader of the team.”

Blackwell said sprints

will be Webb’s strength. He is also expecting big things from Amber Bowden and Delacee Cooper. Cooper was one of the top runners in the Mid-State 3A Conference as a freshman in 2009.

“If I can pick up points in the field events, then I have a good chance this year,” said Blackwell. “It’s going to be by committee.”

The standout may be Dominique Duncan, who finished third in the conference in the high jump last season. Blackwell sees Duncan competing for a regional bid, if not a run at states.

Warren County after a season at KIPP. The Eagles entered the NCHSAA 2A playoffs with a mark of 13-10 last season, making the field “by the skin of our teeth,” as Draffin described it.

Warren County finished behind North Johnston, Louisburg, Roanoke Rapids, and Bunn in league play, but made it in as a wild card.

The Eagles were rocked by No. 1 Greene Central in the first round.

“You go in as the wild card and you get the one seed. It’s sort of like UNC-Greensboro getting Carolina (in the NCAA Tournament),” said Draffin.

Roanoke Rapids advanced further than any other Northern Carolina Conference team before exiting in the third round.

“It was a great experience.

We played an excellent team and we got it handed to us,” said Draffin, who expects a “wide open” NCC in 2011. “We learned from that and that we have to take baby steps to move in the right direction. We’re looking forward to making the playoffs again this season, pretty confident about our chances.”

Good numbers for Eagle golf

“It only takes hitting one good shot to fall in love with the game.”

That’s what golf coach Wanda Thompson hopes will keep Warren County kids coming back to the golf course.

And the numbers have more than doubled from last season. The Eagles have 11 players on their roster for 2011.

“It’s been a great turnout,” said Thompson. “I’m really excited about that. We’re working on building a program, so it’s encouraging to see 10 or 11 players come out for golf.”

Thompson is in her first season as head coach and expects Alex Turner, Wesley Martin and Greg Henry to be the anchors of the team.

Travis Felts, when not on the baseball diamond, will also be a key contributor.

Thompson said Roanoke Rapids and Bunn will likely be the heavyweights of the conference and praised her team for their positive attitudes thus far in the preseason.

“They have great attitudes and work ethics,” she said. “We just want to improve day by day.”

Keesee takes over Eagle tennis

After 15 seasons leading Eagle tennis, coach Tom Traylor has turned over the reigns of the program to one of his former players, David Keesee.

Keesee, a 2003 WCHS graduate, works outside of the school system but has remained close to Traylor and the program since graduating.

“I’ve always kind of been a part of it since I graduated, so it’s not that much of a difference,” he said.

Keesee wants the Eagles to get back to their winning ways. Most of his time on the courts at Warren County was spent being successful.

“The conference championships,” Keesee said of his memorable Eagle moments. “Because when I was here, we had a good team for the entire time I was here. We want to let these guys have the

opportunity to know what it’s like to win a championship.”

Warren County lost a few players from last year and has no seniors for 2011. The Eagles currently have six or seven players and are actively recruiting more.

Keesee has been impressed with the play of Chris Caldwell and Cory Sondgeroth so far this season.

Keesee The Eagles finished third in the conference last season behind North Johnston and Roanoke Rapids.

“I think the main goal (this season) is kind of gearing them up and getting them ready for next year to contend in the conference,” said Keesee.

Eagle softball wants to go further in playoffs

Warren County softball is gearing up for a run at its third consecutive state playoff bid.

But this year, coach Shannon Jones wants out of the first round.

The Eagles were bounced in Round 1 by top seeds in both 2009 and 2010.

“To at least go to the second round,” Jones said of the team goals.

Warren County lost three seniors from last season, but returns seniors Jeronica Alston, Rebekah Cox,

Shannon Wilson and Cynthia King.

“We’re very young, but talented,” Jones said.

Alston is penciled in to be the No. 1 starter with Victoria Sondgeroth catching behind the plate.

Jones said she’s confident in her speedy, versatile outfield and has been impressed with the play of the infield, but recognizes the team must improve offensively to reach its goal.

“We struggled at the plate last season,” said Jones.

“We’re hoping we can be better,

but it’s still very early in the season.

They haven’t really hit against anybody but our pitcher so far.”

Roanoke Rapids and North Johnston were the top teams in the Northern Carolina Conference last season. Roanoke Rapids earned the No. 1 seed and both sides advanced three rounds deep into the playoffs.

Jones said she is fully expecting her team to “step up” in the conference.

Vaughan takes over for Colts soccer

Colts want a return to the tournament

Ryan Vaughan has coached many different levels of soccer, but not varsity high school girls.

After this season, he can add that to his résumé too.

Vaughan is taking over the reigns of the Crossroads girls’ soccer program. The coach, who is finishing up at Southeastern Seminary in May, was previously an assistant women’s coach at the University of South Carolina, where he spent a year and a half coachDeal ing and recruiting.

Vaughan has also coached 12-under and 8-under club teams.

“This is my first time ever coaching varsity girls’ soccer, so this has been very interesting,” he said. “It’s a whole different perspective going from college to 8-year-olds to freshmen through seniors.”

Rain has hurt the practice schedule early on, and the Colts haven’t had much time to hit the pitch.

“We’re still getting used to each other and learning how everything’s going to pan out, so I think the girls are still getting used to me and I’m still adjusting to them. Still building that chemistry, but it’s getting better by the day,” said Vaughan.

“It’s going to be an interesting dynamic. I’ve got girls that have played from when they were really young all the way to people who have never touched the ball before, so it’s going to be really interesting trying to see how everything shapes up.”

One player Vaughan hopes will step into a leadership role is lone senior Erica Deal.

“There are definitely some girls that are emerging as leaders, and I always want to look to our senior

for leadership,” said Vaughan. “That would be my hope for the future is that she’ll step up and be able to really lead this team.”

Crossroads’ first scheduled game is March 17, when the Colts host Trinity.

“Overall, it looks like it’s going to be a real good year. I’ll be able to put together what I hope to be a really good team in the end,” said Vaughan.

Crossroads Christian baseball coach Roger Bibee is hoping to guide his Colts to back-to-back state tourney appearances.

Last season, Crossroads finished second in the conference and earned its first postseason appearance in school history. The Colts were handled easily in the first round by eventual NCISAA 1A state champion Lawrence Academy, but Bibee wants that experience to carry over into 2011.

“It was good,” said Bibee. “It was like us going down there and playing a college team. It was a real good experience for them and for me.”

The Colts lost two seniors from last season, Jacob Campbell (third base) and Ryan Riggin (center field), but return two seniors, Cody Matthews and Jamison

Overby. Matthews will pitch and play short and Overby will catch.

Bibee’s biggest concern may be maintaining perfect attendance. The Colts only have nine players.

“I hope don’t nobody get hurt or sick,” said Bibee.

Bibee is anticipating Matthews, Overby, Dustin Thomas, Seth Davis, and D.J. Matthews to lead the way offensively.

Thomas is expected to play at short and pitch, D.J. Matthews will play second base and Seth Davis will step in at first.

Bibee said a few of the teams in league play were senior-heavy last year, so he expects Crossroads to be able to compete once again.

“If our pitching holds up, we should be alright,” he said. “I think we can play above .500 depending on what they (the conference) have coming back.”
