he local farmers market is about more than just fresh produce. The Vance County Regional Farmers Market will be a year old in June, and 2015 looks bright. “During our peak season, we averaged about 12 vendors per day and averaged about 300 people each

day,” said market Manager Tracy Madigan. “We were pleased with that, but we want to see that grow.” The regional farmers market opened in June 2014 and stayed open through mid-December, Madigan said. The market offers visitors not only fresh, local produce but also

fresh bread, flowers, crafts and other homemade products. The new facility has an open selling area and heated classrooms and bathrooms. A grant was recently secured to heat the selling area. SEE MARKET/PAGE 24

state grant to M.R. Williams will allow the longtime, family-run company in Henderson to retain jobs and double the size of its facility over five years. The Economic Development Incentive Grant from the Vance County Board of Commissioners and the Henderson City Council will add roughly 74,000 square feet of dry warehouse space and about 8,200 square feet of refrigerated space to its current facility at 235 Raleigh Road. Mike Williams, company founder and chairman, said the total project cost is more than $5 million. “This expansion will allow our company to not only retain its presence in Henderson and Vance County but will also allow us to grow our company to meet the needs of our customers,” he said. The grants will allow M.R. Williams to keep at least 200 full-time jobs. M.R. Williams Inc., which opened in April 1976, is now run by the second generation of family.

The company is a wholesale food distributor that primarily supplies convenience stores, colleges and prisons. M.R. Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; office and 110,000-square foot warehouse are the only operating structures of the company. From its location in Henderson, the company ser ves 1,000 retailers The warehouse throughout the Carolinas, is open 24 Virginia, hours a day, six Tennessee and days a week. Kentucky. When the warehouse receives an order, the company retrieves the materials that evening and has it delivered by the end of the following day. The warehouse is open 24 hours a day, six days a week. Using its fleet of 20 trucks, M.R. Williams makes 245 shipments on an average day and up to 270 shipments on a busy day, according to Bobby Eatmon, warehouse manager for M.R. Williams. The company is on pace to generate about $300 million in revenue this year, according to Eatmon. The company provides 100 jobs locally at the warehouse, with an additional 130 sales and office associates who work through the five states it ser ves.

Jerry’s Artarama strong community partner that sends art supplies around the world

erry’s Artarama distribution center at 101 Peter Gill Road can be counted as a Vance County business, but its customer base extends around the world. The Henderson facility is the sole distribution center for the company, providing art supplies to the network of 15 Jerry’s Artarama superstores in the Northeast, the South, Texas and Colorado as well as to the company’s mail-order customers. And Jerry’s Artarama Henderson distribution center supplies them all, offering factory-direct savings to artists, whether they are beginners or professionals. The company was established by Gerald “Jerry” Goldstein in 1968 when he opened a discount art supply store on Long Island, New York, with a commitment to bring down the prices of art supplies. The mail-order business was launched in 1979. The company became a family business when his sons, Ira and David, joined the firm. They are now the company’s managing partners. Jerry Goldstein died Feb. 10, 2015, at the age of 85. In 1994, the company relocated from Long Island to Raleigh, where

The company continued to grow. By 2001, it needed additional space for its distribution center and opened an 80,000-square-foot facility in Henderson. That facility has since been expanded to 160,000 square feet. Jerry’s Artarama has become part of the fabric of Vance County, as an employer and as a contributor to art education in the area. “We’re a growing company in a small community,” said Ed

Lingg, manager of the distribution center. “We provide jobs to local individuals.” That adds up to about 60 local employees, he said. Jerry’s has established itself as a community partner by generously providing art supplies to local groups. Glenn Garrison, art teacher at Clarke Elementary School, said Jerry’s has donated supplies to the art program “almost from the first day they opened.” “The kids are able to do things they wouldn’t otherwise,” he said. “It would be too cost prohibitive.” The company’s contributions to the art programs of the schools have taken place almost every year, Garrison said. “They’ve helped wherever there was the need,” he said. The company has also supported Swing for the Arts, a golf tournament Garrison initiated as a fundraiser for the arts in Vance County Schools. “Jerry’s has been a continuous partner for that, as well,” he said. Jerry’s Artarama has also provided scholarship assistance to local students to continue their art education in college. That corporate generosity was recognized in 2005 when Vance County Schools presented Jerry’s a plaque expressing appreciation for its contributions to the art programs in the school district. Jerry’s has also donated art supplies to the Vance County Arts Council. President Alice Clark Sallins said the council uses the supplies in SEE GLOBAL/PAGE 8

the programs it offers, including the Imagination Art Station, a weeklong summer program held at E.M. Rollins School; a Very Special Art Day for elementary school students; free art lessons for seniors; and more. From an office with one telephone and a four-page catalog, Jerryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Artarama has expanded until it now serves more than 200,000 customers in virtually every country in the world. n Sept. 4, 2014, Vance-Granville Community College celebrated 45 years of existence, impact and success. Students, staff and stakeholders spent the month in reflection. The college opened as Henderson Technical Institute in 1969, a time when Vance County suffered from high unemployment rates, the evolution of an industrial economy and a scarcely trained workforce. Trustee Opie Frazier said there weren’t many classes offered back then, and the ones that were involved continuing education and trade skills. Frazier — a member of the first full board of trustees for the college and former chairman of the trustees — was appointed in 1971 and ser ved a 25-year term, taking a break before returning in 2002. Steven Graham, the current vice president of finance and operations, said he was four years old when the institute opened. He grew up to attend the college and eventually make a living from it. “This college is in my heart both personally and professionally,” Graham said. “I had the pleasure of experiencing the growth and value of it from three different points of view: one as a lifelong resident of this community, another view as a student, and also on a professional level. During its start, the institute operated out of the former Maria Parham Hospital building on Chestnut Street. After Vance County established a partnership with Granville County in 1972 and the General Assembly approved its college status in 1976, Henderson Technical Institute’s name was changed to Vance-Granville Community

The main campus was built in 1976, right outside of Oxford. The college’s southern campus in Creedmoor was first established in 1982, a Warren County campus in Warrenton came in 1988, and a Franklin County campus in Louisburg was created in 1991. Frazier said he has been involved in many of the colleges funding and expansion efforts and seen many of his peers come and go. “It’s been my pleasure to ser ve under ever y president we’ve had,” he said. Six people have led Vance-Granville since it was established: Donald Mohorn ser ved from 1969 to 1979, Thomas Carroll’s term was 1979 to 1980, Benjamin Currin was president from 1981 to 1998, Robert Miller

joined the college in 1999 and left in 2004, and Randy Parker arrived in September 2004 and left in 2011. Stelfanie Williams has been president since 2012. She said the founders set a foundation for growth and expansion and established a strong mission to educate. “The heart of what we do has always been teaching and learning,” she said. “That has not changed and probably will never change.” James Edwards, college spokesman, worked at the college for 15 years before leaving in 2004. He returned in 2014. Edwards said his fondest memor y — aside from graduations and scholarship awards — was the opening of the civic center in 1989. SEE PILLAR/PAGE 19

according to the Public School Review, and has a 13:1 student to teacher ratio. The district is not limited to traditional learning techniques. Clarke Elementary integrates STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — into its curriculum, while E.O. Young Elementary fosters creative leadership among students.

The county’s two charter schools, Henderson Collegiate School and Vance Charter School, have big plans on the horizon. Henderson Collegiate will open Henderson Collegiate High School for the 2015-2016 school year while Vance Charter will relocate to a new facility in 2016. SEE DIVERSE/PAGE 23

he 12-member board of the Embassy Cultural Center Foundation hopes to have the performing arts center open for business by this fall. “Things are moving along,” said John Wester, who is president of the board of the Embassy Cultural Center Foundation. “Of course, cold weather slows things down.” He said construction of the theater could be complete by the summer. Plans for the performing arts center, known as McGregor Hall, were announced by the cultural foundation in April 2013. The theater will have seating for

foundation will operate the performing arts theater. Instead, the cultural foundation will enlist the help of a management company and facility director. The company would pay a percentage of revenues back to the foundation, Wester said. He said McGregor Hall is the second phase of the Breckenridge Commons project. The third phase is the conversion of the lobby used to enter the library and McGregor Hall into an individualized space, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This space is the gem in the crown of Breckenridge Commons and has unlimited potential as a space that will evoke inspiration and contemplation,â&#x20AC;? he said. hether it’s fishing, hiking, boating, swimming, biking, bird watching, sailing, camping, water skiing, paddle boarding or jet skiing, Vance County’s got you covered if you love outdoor activities. Fishing options are about to increase with construction of the new Fox Pond Park fishing pier in its final stages. The pond will be stocked, and it features solar-powered fish feeders, which will increase the number of fish the pond can support. Kendrick Vann, director of Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks, said his department wants to wrap a lot of programs around the fishing pier, including making it part of the summer camp program. There are also plans in the works to have the Fox Pond Trail eventually connect Fox Pond and Aycock Recreation Center, and there are other improvements taking place in the areas around Fox Pond now. For water enthusiasts, Kerr Lake, one of the features for which Vance County is best known, offers an array of opportunities. “We have something for everyone,” said Nancy Wilson, executive director of the Vance County Tourism Development Authority. The lake features two piers on the North Carolina side at Henderson Point and Bullocksville where residents can fish, enjoy the view or take photos of the sunset. It’s also a great location to watch the July 4 fireworks. For fishermen, there is also bank fishing, and the lake plays homes to

It’s one of the top fishing lakes in the U.S., Wilson said, and is sought as a site for many tournaments because the lake is pristine and protected. Changes at Nutbush also have been a great addition, Wilson said. New floating ramps make Kerr Lake more competitive for drawing tournaments. The launch ramps are paved, too. It’s not just fishermen who compete on the lake. The Carolina Sailing Club each June hosts the Governor’s Cup Regatta. It draws spectators and participants from all over. Vance County’s portion of the lake has two marinas — Satterwhite Point and Steele Creek. Many people bring their own toys to the lake, including

those who don’t have watercraft, they can find canoe, kayak and pontoon boat rentals at Steele Creek Marina, Wilson said. There are tributaries that canoers and kayakers can head up, where they can take their time and enjoy the wildlife. Kerr Lake is also part of the N.C. Birding Trail. There are walkable trails that can be found around the day use areas. For those who want to spend more than a day at the lake, there are about 650 campsites that can

accommodate any size RV, and there are tent camping spots with tent pads available. For people who prefer to travel through the great outdoors on two wheels, there are bike trails marked by the North Carolina Department of Transportation that extend into Virginia. July 4 marks a special time at Kerr Lake, with families filling the park. People come on boats from all over. Lots of families also come early in the day, cook out and swim, Wilson said. There will be food vendors and a band, and, of course, fireworks that night. July 4 falls on a Saturday

this year, and that is the day the celebration will be held. A change this year, though, is that the state park will charge an admission fee. Looking toward the future, Wilson says one component she would like to see added for people who enjoy the outdoors is an equestrian component near the lake. Currently, there are no horse trails or accommodations for equestrians. While Kerr Lake is among the area’s most famous draws, Wilson notes that there are many other possibilities for people who enjoy being out and about. The self-guided Heritage Trail is something people can walk in the city and

drive in the country. Bee’s Knees Country Store is a favorite for many visitors. The store’s owners also run a bed and breakfast. “It has a beautiful view of Weldon’s Mill,” Wilson said. The Show, Shine, Shag and Dine car show in October (Oct. 16-18 this year) will bring people from all over who will be walking around downtown Henderson to check out antique and classic cars, as well as nostalgic drag cars. “They love it here,” Wilson said. “It really is geared toward car people.” The weekend caps off with inductions into the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame.

“I think it’s done excellent for its first year,” said Pete Burgess, a member of the board of directors for Vance County Farm Bureau. “We were a little surprised with how well it’s done.
