In preparation for the ‘rockets’ red glare’ East Coast Pyro works behind the scenes to light up the sky on July 4 By MARTIN FISHER Dispatch Staff
Kerr Lake is expecting thousands of visitors over the Independence Day weekend, but only a few are expected to be loaded for bear with explosives, detonation wires, blasting caps, electronic timing and launch devices: the crew from East Coast Pyro. They're the fireworks guys. They'll be sending a lead man, Joel Matthews, days ahead of time. Then come the technicians: the lead operator is the true professional, "to deal with everything once we're all there," Matthews said. And they leave nothing behind that they might need on location. "We have to bring it all, everything we need," he said. Matthews said that after 30 years in pyrotechnics, he has grown a taste for displays that light the night over a lake, reigning colorful glories

down toward the reflecting water. "It is a great place to view fireworks," Matthews said. "This is a huge event for Kerr Lake, and it is completely free for the public." Talking in depth with Matthews reveals why the truly big fireworks shelling, as exciting and beautiful as it may be, should be left to
the professionals. They apply years of experience and very careful preparations to make sure their shows are successful - and safe. A saying among the technicians has it that they plan meticulously to bring their fingers and toes, and leave with all fingers and toes in tact when they're done. Matthews, the event
producer for the Kerr Lake show, said that they apply a team concept, and follow the rules. "It is always more than a one-man job," he said. "Typically, we'll bring three or four. One is in control, and others assist. We always need spotters. First, we have to follow North Carolina protocols."

An extensive code with guidelines on oversight and safety comes from the National Fire Protection Agency. It is a fairly comprehensive, in-depth document," Matthews said. "That gives everyone a playbook. It gives us the guidelines for responding to whenever something unexpected occurs." Matthews said he starts the process with his advance work, viewing the area and meeting with his local partners in safety. "That's mostly what I do, in working with clients, doing the front-end work," he said. "I look at the display area, make sure all of that is up to code, and I work with the local fire department for permits." The technicians come, and they take the time they need to position and wire or fuse all the fireworks for an orderly series of launching on the night of the event. The customer in this case is the Vance County Tourism Department that each year provides the Saturday daylong celebration culminating in fireworks over the lake.

There is a wide range of options to choose from when working with East Coast, with traditional-style electronically fired fireworks forming a foundation for what they do. Matthews said that at times they will deploy manual-fire fireworks, using the port-fires or flares, igniting a fuse. "There are several different methods, and we use all of them," he said. "You can electronically fire them, and you can use computer controls. It all depends on how
elaborate the display is to be." He has worked on projects that range from easy open settings to precision conditions in a city. East Coast also does indoor shows. A unique opportunity for Matthews was launching from the wooden deck of a famous World War II aircraft carrier about 15 years ago. "If you're out in the middle of the country, it's easy," he said. "If you are wanting a show launched from a roof top, that's different. Shooting from the flight deck of the USS Yorktown, that was very unique." Their inventory
includes multi-effect barrage devices, lowlevel effects such as "walls of comets," mines and precision exhibition candle scenes, traditional aerial shells, state of the art graphic pattern shells, and exotic European manufacture imports. Matthews said that for Kerr Lake, tradition is holding the upper hand. You can't improve much on what has already worked so well:
the aerial shells over the lake. East Coast claims to be the Southeast region's largest fireworks entertainment company, starting several years ago under new owners, with a new name that carries forward the former company's legacy. The history of the staff continuing with East Coast carries forward a customer base that includes thousands

EverStart tourney: Bass, bass and more bass on Kerr Lake This year’s FLW EverStart Northern Division Bass Tournament on Kerr Lake, held June 14-16, saw 101 professional anglers visit the area from as far north as Ontario, Canada, Walt as far Bowen south as Palm On the Water Special Bay, Fla, and as far west as bountiful Utah. The first place price for the pros was $26,749 cash along with a new Ranger Boat, motor and trailer. The same numbers of co-anglers (nonboaters who compete against each other from the back of the professionals’ boats) were in the area competing for a top prize of a Ranger boat package. These tournaments last for three days with the full field of anglers competing on Days 1 and 2. Only the top-10 anglers make the cut to compete on the final day. Winners are then determined by the total weight of bass caught over all three days, with each days catch consisting of a five fish limit of either largemouth or smallmouth bass. Each

bass must measure at least 14 inches long. Anglers blasted off from the new Nutbush Park North tournament facility daily at 6 a.m, with the Day 1 and 2 weigh-in held at the Nutbush facility. The exciting final weigh-in was held at the WalMart No. 2256, 200 North Cooper Road in Henderson. This year’s winner was Chris Carmell from Moyock who led the event from wire to wire after holding on to take the top prize with only three fish that weighed 5-02 on Day 3. But those three were enough to get the job done and Chris went to the bank with a nice check. With a total three-day weight of 36-01, Chris reported catching most of his fish from one location on a 10-inch worm.
Chris reported finding a “magic spot” near the mouth of Nutbush Creek. Two stumps with a log nearby alongside a deeper hole held the fish he needed to win. Other local anglers finishing in the top-10 were George Lambeth from Thomasville and Tom Wilkinson from Oxford. The comeback story of the event went to Brian Divito from Trafford, Pa., who despite only weighing in three fish for 5-05 on Day 1 of competition, rallied from near the bottom of the field to make the top-10 finals with Day 2 weight of 16-08. Finishing off on Day 3 with a nice four-fish sack weighing 11-06, Brian took home the fourth place trophy and almost $7,000. SEE TOURNEY/PAGE 15

Boats with motors? Boring. Tom Wille’s parents owned a powerboat, but that was never very exciting for a young Tom. “We didn’t water ski or anything like that. We just kind of sat around,” said Wille. Tom would watch a sailing club over a nearby hill. “One day, one of them was looking for crew and yelled up at me, ‘Hey do you want to crew?’ And I crewed for them, and I’ve been sailing ever since,” Wille said. Wille, a member of
the Carolina Sailing Club and skipper of the Buccaneer 5270, moved to Henderson from central Ohio about five years ago. Kerr Lake and the Carolina Sailing Club, along with the presence of Crossroads Christian School, were major reasons why Wille chose the area. His daughter, Nikki, is a rising junior at Crossroads Christian. Together, they have formed a formidable sailing duo in the club. They were undefeated last season in the Buccaneer fleet. That helped Nikki become Crew of the Year in the roving sailing club.
Tom said the club is Raleigh, Henderson and south Virginiacentered. There’s no clubhouse — it’s sort of a traveling road show, stopping at both Henderson Point and Jordan Lake once a month. The Willes recently competed in the 55th Governor’s Cup Regatta at Kerr Lake and will be back in action on their home turf in the Championship Series July 7-8. Nikki participated in her first regatta when she was 10. She said she’s been sailing pretty steady for four or five years. SEE SAILING/PAGE 13

Road closure/detour Traffic will be detoured temporarily for approximately one hour on Saturday evening between 9:15-10:15 p.m. from Satterwhite Point Road (SR 1319) onto Anderson Creek Road. (SR 1374). The detour will help reduce congestion and allow for timely clearing of vehicular traffic occurring immediately after the conclusion of the Independence Day Celebration and fireworks.

The seven Kerr Lake campground areas managed by the state of North Carolina get popular this time of year. “We completely filled all sites for Memorial Day,” said Bryce Fleming, the park’s superintendent. “Even the most primitive sites got booked.” The state-managed sites include: • Henderson Point, off N.C. Highway 39 near the Virginia border.

the Virginia border. The campgrounds feature a mix of sites, with some that are primitive and others that are set up to provide electrical service and water. However, for some sites, it may be necessary to run a hose about 100 feet to reach the source. Of the combined total of 602 campsites, 325 have electric hookups, Fleming said. Most of those can handle 50 amps, but 65-70 of them are older models that can only manage about 30. The park offers 14
sites specifically for those who might have needs under the American with Disabilities Act, with 12 of those wired for electricity and two without at Henderson Point. Each camping area provides a spot for boat launching, Fleming said. “That’s a big deal and one of the big draws,” he said. “People also like that a lot of the campsites are waterfront.” They’ve also got some fishing piers and hot showers. No wi-fi is available in the park unless campers

conditions. However the same unseasonable conditions likely caused many anglers to miss out on the best bites while fishing based on typical tactics required in mid June. Those same tactics didn’t work as well as they may have during any other year with more seasonable weather, and that, along with the impact of
the recent largemouth bass virus on the fish population likely led to a drop in weights from what would have been seen in years past. Hopefully, with the fish population recovering from the virus and the wonderful tournament facilities now in place, Henderson will soon be hosting more events like this one.
