Conservative MEPs Support Fishermen over Discard Ban South West MEP Julie Girling has welcomed a recent vote in the European Parliament which will give fishermen two years to adjust to new rules banning the discarding of caught fish but has warned that any incoming Government must support fishermen to implement the changes. The discard ban was brought in at the start of this year as part of reforms to the EU's Common Fisheries Policy, and aims to resolve issues around the storage of fish that cannot be sold. Meanwhile, the European Commission has been asked to make an annual impact assessment on the implementation and progress of the discard ban. Although welcoming the

vote in Strasbourg, Julie Girling warns that more support is still needed: "Parliament has ensured skippers will have a two year clear period to adjust to the new rules without fear of heavy handed enforcement. However, fishermen urgently need guidance and support so they can fish without fear of breaking the law. Importantly, member states must make use of the flexibility they now have, so fishermen can make a challenging and complex set of rules work in practice. I will continue to work with South West fishermen to ensure they receive the support they need."

Helston’s ACT1 Youth Theatre celebrates 10 years This year Helston’s ACT1 youth theatre group are celebrating an amazing 10yrs. So to help the celebration for the first time at the Epworth Hall the group is staging two major productions in the same week. Firstly kicking off with Guys and Dolls a musical fable considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy. Its namesake ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950 it received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics while winning a bevy of awards, The second production is Disney’s The Little Mermaid, this classic Disney title contains all of the songs from the Academy Award® winning animated feature film as well as three new songs from the Broadway show. It takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first,

she’ll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice. It has been a challenge for the group but it was necessary as ACT1 is going from strength to strength with a large number of young people involved and a substantial waiting list, doing two shows was the only way to accommodate all involved. Local Athlete selected for Team GB for the World Transplant Games 2015 Transplant Sport are delighted to announce that Tracy Carroll, from Helston, Cornwall will be representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the World Transplant Games in 2015. The team, which will be the largest ever, will travel to Argentina in August next year. More than 140 transplant athletes, including 14 juniors, and many more supporters will descend on South America, the first time the World Transplant Games have been held on this continent. Half of the team are new members and have been selected following their success at this year’s Westfield Health British Transplant Games in Bolton. Tracy, who had a Kidney transplant, will be competing for the first time in swimming events says that she is honoured and delighted to have to chosen to represent

team GB. In the coming months she hopes to raise lots more awareness of organ donation through her fundraising activities. The World Transplant Games, supported by the International Olympic Committee, represents the largest organ donor awareness event in the world, featuring a week of 13 sporting events. Team GB and NI will join over 1000 other transplant athletes from 55 countries across the globe. Lynne Holt, Team Manager and Trustee at Transplant Sport said: “We are thrilled to announce our team and welcome the new faces to our squad. “It is always a little daunting competing at the World Transplant Games for the first time, but with the help of those who have been before, together with the coaches, captains, management and medical team, the

experience will ultimately be a rewarding one for the athletes! “Selection on to our team is just the beginning! It is an enormous commitment of both time and money. The next 10 months will be busy for the athletes, keeping fit, regularly training in their sport, attending regular team training meets, doing publicity and trying to raise the £3k per person to get there! However, the opportunity to represent their country, celebrate life and in doing so, paying tribute to their donors, is the goal” Each athlete, to keep their place on the team, is required to attend a minimum of 3 out of the 4 training meets. The first team meeting took place at the beginning of November at Warwick University. The athletes train with team GB&NI coaches throughout the day, interspersed with a briefing

from team managers, medic and one of the team physio’s, All of these people are Transplant Sport volunteers, giving their time freely. The team are also supported by Travel Stop, Sovereign and Total Team Wear. Lynne added: “Not only are these athletes ambassadors for our country, but they are also representing the charity, Transplant Sport, and hope to raise more awareness here in the UK and globally, of the need for more people to sign on to the Organ Donor Register and discuss their wishes with family and friends. Helston teacher riding Olympic road race route for cancer charity A HELSTON schoolteacher is looking for support as he warms up for a charity bike ride to raise funds for The Cove Macmillan Support Centre. Ben Osborne, who teaches at St Michaels School, will be taking part in the Ride London 100 mile event, which takes place on the route of the London Olympic road race and will be riding with his brother in law, Bryson, who is head of cancer services in Treliske and will be working closely with patients once it is completed. The centre will provide a dedicated facility for people affected by cancer, whether they're the patient, are caring for someone or are simply worried about cancer. It will mean people have a place to come to when they need support, and will offer a wide range of services to make sure people with cancer have the best quality of life they can. “I'm going to be taking part in the Ride London 100 mile event in August, which takes place on the route of the London Olympic road race. This is something that I have been keen to do for a while, but varying events have prevented me from doing it. I

have chosen to ride for The Cove as Macmillan are raising funds for a dedicated cancer treatment centre. I feel that this will benefit the community and provide an invaluable support to families and patients who are undergoing treatment for cancer.” Their fundraising target is £1500, of which they have already raised over £500 and are organising two fundraising events over the next two months to help them push towards the target. Council seeks creative ideas to help keep toilets open

Cornwall Council is seeking creative ways to work with Town and Parish Councils and the business community to keep public toilets open by funding them in a different way. Members agreed the decision to end Cornwall Council funding for running public toilets from 1 April 2016 last year as part of the 20142018 budget, which needed to find savings of ÂŁ196m as a result of reductions in

Government funding. Since then Members have been looking at a range of options to help keep as many public toilets open as possible while also giving best value to local residents. A number of public toilets have already been devolved to Town and Parish Councils and others have been transferred back to private landowners. The authority is now organising a large-scale tender called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Your Convenience,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; which seeks to attract bids from

numerous sources to help secure the public toilet provision at over 40 Public Conveniences across Cornwall. These toilet blocks are located in well-known locations such as Padstow, the Camel Trail and Praa Sands. Interested parties are being offered the opportunity to take on a lease of a public toilet to use as a commercial business. The tenderers will be required to continue to provide public toilets as a condition of the lease. Businesses may utilise part of the existing

building or if possible use land next to or near to the toilets to operate a business which could transform it into a wide variety of commercial uses such as cafes, recreational activities or even holiday lets (subject to planning). Cornwall Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Portfolio holder for Housing and the Environment Joyce Duffin said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In light of the significant savings that the Council has to find we have had to investigate alternative ways of keeping public toilets open for both our residents and, as one of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top tourist destinations, for visitors to Cornwall.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some town and parish councils have taken over the running of the toilets in their community and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been encouraged by those businesses who have opened their facilities to the public as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;community toiletsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now, with the end of funding for toilets approaching in April 2016, we are offering the opportunity for an individual or business to rent the remaining buildings while still providing a toilet facility for the public. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe this is the best solution to reach our savings targets while ensuring the Council does what it can to keep toilet provision open across Cornwall.â&#x20AC;?

Cornwall Council officers have contacted Town and Parish Councils about the tender exercise and signboards will soon be installed on the relevant properties. An advert will also appear in the Estates Gazette in early May. Consultation is on-going with Town and Parish Councils and the list of toilet blocks to be contained within the current tender is attached. INGREDIENTS 1 tin Heinz Cream of Asparagus Soup 1 smoked haddock 1 fresh haddock Splash white wine 1 tablespoon peas 2-3 potatoes 1 dessert spoon butter Splash milk Salt and pepper for seasoning A sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese Splash white wine 1/4 teaspoon English mustard

METHOD 1. Peel and chop the potatoes into medium chunks and boil in salted water until tender. 2. Pop the soup in a pan with a splash of white wine and the mustard. Heat until simmering and add the fish and some peas if liked, cook for no more than a

minute. Switch off the heat, the fish will be cooked to perfection. 3. Mash the potatoes and add the butter and milk, check the seasoning. 4. Place the fish in a flameproof dish with lots of the sauce. Surround with the mashed potato and gently fork it to look attractive. 5. Sprinkle some Parmesan over the top of the dish and grill for a minute or so until lightly golden.

Helston Hellcats rule Wendron CC regain Pool the roost at Devonport title by just one point Helston Hellcats and Newquay Queen Bees under 15s and 18s both travelled to Devonport Services Rugby Club on Sunday for the end of season festival. Whilst the under 18s played a day full of very strong rugby unfortunately they did not reach their final. The under 15s combined squad found themselves undefeated all day in their pool stages and progressing to the final which, despite their opposition giving them a tough battle, they emerged the

winners Both Newquay’s coach Tom Longworth and Helston’s coach Jos Bond said how proud of the girls they were and that they had shown a great team

spirit throughout the day. Everyone is now looking forward to their last game of the season next Sunday at Newquay before having a well earned rest during the off season.

Wendron CC A have regained the West Cornwall Winter Pool League Division 1 title by the closest of margins. Wendron won the last game of the season 6-3 against Constantine SC A and defending champions had a 7-2 victory over Helston RBL A. An extra point would have won the title for the football club as they had lost fewer games during the season. Lizard FC A finished the season in third spot with a 6-3 win against Helston RFC A and Godolphin Club F came back from a 4-2 deficit to defeat the Atlantic Inn A team 5-4. Wins from Michael Southgate, Alan Pearce, Craig Pound and Matt Sharpe helped the White Hart B team finish their season with a 6-3 win over Rodney Inn B. When I say division 1 couldn't be closer division 2 did prove to be closer as Helston RBL B and Godolphin Club B level on points both gained 6-3 wins in their final match but Helston RBL B became champions having lost fewer games. The Legion won against the Angel and the Godolphin Club won against the Lion & Lamb A team. White Hart A have finished bottom but finished the season in style with a 6-3 win over Helston RFC

C, singles wins coming from Bill Magill, Alan Magill, Steve Southgate and Richie Sharpe while the Bell Inn also finished with a 6-3 win against Helston RFC B. Potters Bar B have won the division 3 title but second spot is still up for grabs. Helston FC B finished the season in style with an 81 win over Black Swan A but Mounts Bay and Helston RFC D still have 2 games in hand. Helston RFC D had a 6-3 win over Breage SC last week while there was controversy between the Mounts Bay and Mullion FC B when with the Mounts Bay winning 5-1, there was a dispute with Mullion walking out. Craig Jacka, R.Wara, James Pawlyn and Tom Greenaway all won for the Lion & Lamb B in their 7-2 win over Godolphin Club A. The Three Tuns gained a 7-2 win over the Queens Arms in division 4 last week thanks to singles wins from Kyle Eustace, Sam Stapleton, Mike Durrant, Rob Brown and Chris Mckay and they need a 9-0 victory in their re-arranged game with Red Lion A to take the title instaed of Paris B who have played all their games holding a 9 point lead. Atlantic Inn B defeated the Wheel Inn 5-4 and the Seven Stars won 6-3 against the Cowshed Bar.
