What is Children’s Podiatry All About? As adults we all realise just how much impact having even a small injury in our feet, ankles or legs can have on our whole lives. Having a lower-limb impairment doesn’t just impact that body part, but also affects several other important areas of a child’s life. A foot & leg impairment affects a child’s overall wellbeing including their: • Physical health • Social life, • As well as t heir Emotional & Mental Health. Not being able to walk or run normally reduces a child’s activity levels so that other areas of their health can be adversely affected. If a child doesn’t stay physically active they may not develop good habits of regular activity into adulthood. Not having good habits of physical activity increases the risks for developing obesity, cardiovascular disease etc in adult life. Physical activity has another positive effect on a child’s personal wellbeing where they participate with other people in sport and
outdoor activities like walking, running, surfing, outdoor games etc. Not participating in physical activity affects their social life, with emotional well-being and, ultimately a child’s mental health, intimately connected to a child’s social activities. At Cornwall Podiatry we’re not focused on fixing the injured body part in isolation, but in identifying what the child wants to do when they recover back to full health & fitness. Our focus is on the child’s whole wellbeing. Our Person-centred care is designed to put the child first in an effort to treat the whole person, encompassing physical, mental and social wellness, environment and personal circumstances. Our approach looks beyond the symptoms of a disease and aims to meet the person’s needs and priorities before those of the system or a professional. We aim to deliver a meaningful outcome for the child. Our podiatrists help children and families overcome concerns that affect the lower
limb, so all can stay active, happy and included. Scientific research in the outcomes of children’s podiatry shows that podiatrists can have a massive positive impact on all these central areas of a child’s wellbeing. Increasing physical activity levels, helping children participate socially in sport & other active hobbies, and ultimately helping to improve the emotional & mental health of children at those crucial times in their lives.
