How can we as parents help our children adjust to a new country when it’s new and foreign for them as well? Focusing on a loving connection between a parent and a child is vital to help the child integrate.

The unhappiness often results from our resistance to the current situation and spills into our perception of every small detail of our surroundings and our day. The only way to be happy is to focus on what we have now, rather than thinking about the past. Know that your thinking, not Switzerland, is making you unhappy.

Create a safe space for your child, in their bedroom for instance. Identify and bring along key toys, games and books that help to establish that protected, familiar environment your child needs. Be prepared for a change of behavior in your child. This might include anything from slight behavioral regressions, increasing tensions to complete withdrawal or none of the above. Often your child behaves clingier because you, as a parent, become their home. Be there, attention -wise, as much as you can for them.

Many expat families experience dislocation on personal, family and community levels. On a personal level, many expat mothers find themselves thrown into the identity of housewife (or stay-at-home-mom). This disrupts their sense of identity, worth and purpose in their new world. On a family level, many experience a sudden change as their wider family and friends’ support network disappears in the move. The insecurity, loneness, lack of direction and dissatisfaction can result in an increasing strain on the family.

If drug therapy is necessary, a genetic assessment of drug effectiveness contributes significantly to minimizing the risk of treatment failure or drug intolerance. This innovative field combines pharmacology (the science of how drugs work) with the science of human Hirslanden’sgenomes. ‘Precise’ program intends to use genetic analyses to adapt drug therapy to each individual patient in terms of type and dose. Is there a down-payment for the car?

Why is it so great for foreigners living in Switzerland?

Some expats don’t know in advance how long they will stay here, some have short assignments, and others just don’t want to bother with the paperwork.

With us they have low expenses while still having flexibility, convenience and peace of mind.

After the minimum duration has passed,

If you are a foreigner in Switzerland and - like most expats - don’t know how long you’re staying here, getting a car can be challenging. Buying or leasing a car will tie you up in a long contract and renting a car will cost an arm and a leg. Now there’s Carvolution. Léa Miggiano, Carvolution Co-Founder explains why this is the best mobility solution for expats.

How does the subscription work?

‘Everything’ meaning what exactly? Everything is included except fuel or charging, and that means: insurance, taxes, service & maintenance, cantonal registration, tyres, initial highway vignette and a fuel or a charging card for electric cars for discounted refuelling or charging.

FEATURED PARTNER:

You pick the minimum contract duration, whether it’s for 3, 6 or 48 months.

We’re the netflix of cars, no down payment, just your monthly subscription fee. What about the duration of the contract? What if, like most foreigners in Switzerland, I have no idea how long I’ll be here?

Provided by: Léa Miggiano, Carvolution Co-founder Expats all over Switzerland love Carvolution. Here’s why more and more decide to drive a car on a subscription.

We’re well aware of this and Carvolution is giving people a choice - you can choose how much you drive and your monthly fee is lower if you’re an occasional driver. With us, people can drive a new car affordably, and much easier than buying or leasing. They get everything they need for their car from a single source and save money on top of that. Since fewer and fewer people want to be tied to the same car for several years (regardless of whether they are Swiss or expats), we offer full flexibility. Our customers drive their car for as long as they want. MOBILITY

you can keep your car, change or return it any time with 30 days’ notice. Tell us more about the payment, I see there’s an ‘initial cost’ of 390 CHF. What’s that? Once you book a car, this is what we’ll charge you: a membership-fee for new customers of 390 CHF. We charge it one time only and it covers the registration and the order of your new license plates, as well as 2 monthly fees, which we charge in advance because we don’t require any security deposit. After that, you pay a fixed monthly price and that’s all. How about the paperwork? To get a Carvolution subscription, we’ll need your residence permit, your employment contract and your last salary statement for the credit check. And that’s it, no hassle really. Can my spouse or any other family member or friend drive the car as well? Of course. It is your car and you can choose who you allow at the wheel. There’s only one rule: the driver must have a driver’s license that’s valid in Switzerland.

How do costs for a car subscription compare to leasing or buying a car? We’ve made a rough calculation and taking all costs into account, a car subscription really is more affordable. On our website Carvolution.ch all comparisons are available. What kind of cars do you offer? We have over 70 different models from different brands and types, from small cars to SUVs and electric cars. And what’s also very important is that our cars are top-equipped, we want our customers to feel safe and comfortable.

Why do you think car subscriptions are becoming more and more popular?

Lea Miggiano, Carvolution Co-founder, and her team are here to assist you in finding the most convenient car for your mobility needs.

I think there’s a new way of seeing cars, or a new generation of people who are not willing to invest a lot of time and money in a car they don’t use so often.

No one ice cream flavor is better than another but most people have a favorite that they will defend adamantly as “the best”. The right school for you and your child will depend on your personal preferences and goals. Luckily, the overall quality of these schools is very high, so be encouraged, not intimidated. Make your own judgments about schools by visiting them and considering the special needs of your family. No one else can make the decision better than you.

The right school is out there. It will balance between your child’s personality, interests, and specific learning needs, your family history, your family goals for the future, and your financial situation. Like a puzzle, you need to identify the pieces and put your picture together. Having the pieces in the right places will make your experience in Switzerland, and your child’s future, even more spectacular.

How about home schooling? Home schooling in Switzerland is not that popular: about 0.3% young people are home-schooled, compared to 3.3% in the US. This form of schooling is only legally possible in a few Swiss cantons.

Public schooling In Switzerland, public school is an excellent choice, as there is language support available for foreign children, the curriculum is of great quality and it’s free. If you’re planning to stay longterm in Switzerland, public school is definitely the right way to go to fully learn the local languages and experience the local culture. As downsides, the school schedule does not favor full-time working parents and after-school fees are not cheap. Also, if you’ve just landed in Switzerland and your kids don’t speak a word of German or French, the language barrier will isolate and frustrate them.

23 ones, as you’ll be much more connected to the local culture, while still having a community of expats.

No state subsidies Very different from the UK or France, Switzerland’s health care system is not subsidized by the state. Nor is it a combination of state subsidies and private insurance, as in Germany. The Swiss health care system resembles more the US health care system, where contributions are entirely private.

It can certainly be complicated to choose the best health insurance as an expat, especially when you’re not 100% fluent in the language of the canton you live in. Our partner, SWICA makes it easier for you. Thanks to innovative telemedicine options, online tools that do away with bureaucracy and English support so you won’t feel lost trying to understand legal terms in a foreign language, SWICA is one of the best health insurers in Switzerland.

Individuals pay for health insurance If you’re coming from the UK, then the fact that you’re entirely responsible for choosing and paying for your health insurance will be a definite surprise. On the plus side though, you do not have to finance all health costs by yourself, thanks to the franchise system.

Any foreigner in Switzerland, especially those coming from EU countries, goes through a slight cultural - and financialshock once they understand the Swiss insurance model and see its hefty fees.

How does the franchise system work?

Let’s take a closer look at why that happens.

HEALTH INSURANCE IN SWITZERLAND

The type of insurance model you choose will determine whether you are free to choose your doctor at any point or limit your choice of medical provider to a pool of doctors determined by the insurance Ifcompany.youarechoosing,

To be able to have access to health care in Switzerland, you’ll pay monthly insurance premiums and also part of the cost of medical treatment or any kind of medical interventions. You will contribute to these costs, together with your health insurer. All your medical invoices must go to your insurer. You will have to pay all of them until you reach your franchise limit. After that limit, it is the insurer who handles the costs. Your share of the payments depends on the type of coverage you have.

The Opening In August 2012, SIS Rotkreuz-Zug opened its doors with 29 students and a small group of teachers. The school celebrated its ten-year anniversary with a project week that included activities for the children such as creating banners to chart the school’s history, interviewing present and past community members and creating time capsules that have been buried in the school garden to be opened in ten years’ time. We enjoyed marking our ten-year anniversary at our yearly summer party, during which we reflected together on the success of the school and looked ahead

Building on Success Over the past ten years, the school has built on solid foundations and has a well-earned, strong reputation for both the academic and personal success of its bilingual students. This has meant steady growth to today’s 120 students. The modern building on the Suurstoffi Estate completes the set of three school buildings. Here, the school has its primary and secondary departments which boast their own basketball/football pitch, a library and computer suite, and purpose-built art, music and science rooms. As a full day school, we offer before and after-school care, as well as holiday clubs, lunch service and a wide array of after-school clubs. We enjoy close ties to the families and links are made to the wider community through local visits, sports days and donations to the elderly people’s home.

Mortgage financing is divided into a first mortgage and a second mortgage. The first mortgage can cover up to a maximum of 66% of the purchase price. If you need more financing, then you’ll need to take out a second mortgage.

First of all, can foreigners buy property in Switzerland?

The bank finances a maximum of 80% of the market value of the property. You have to contribute at least 20% of the purchase price. At least half of that amount must be your own funds and not taken from your employee benefits insurance.

If you have a valid residence B permit, you may acquire property or an existing building for your own use. If you have a C permit for Switzerland, you may buy more than one plot of land for residential use or real estate of any kind without special authorization.

FINANCIAL ADVICE30

Are you planning to buy property in Switzerland? For most foreigners living here, this is a painful topic. The high property purchase price, the complex mortgage system, the limited availability – and your list of hurdles doesn’t stop here. Helvetia sheds some light on the topic and adds some expert tips.

The second mortgage must be repaid in regular instalments over a maximum of 15 years before you reach the age of 65.

PLAN, SAVE & BUY PROPERTY IN SWITZERLAND

Affordability is quite a simple calculation of your income versus the property costs.

• Get a detailed consultation on the Swiss Pension and Social Security System and how to save for old age, including 3rd pillar pension system, savings, and survivor income protection

• Get an explanation of how mortgages work in Switzerland and understand the impact of property purchase on pension, savings and tax burden, including how you can reduce your tax burden by property purchase

You’ll be happy to know that the list is generous. The funds you are allowed to use for your 20% can mean savings and securities holdings, pension capital, life insurance, gifts, or inheritance advancements. Presumably, the most significant contribution, will come from your Pillar 2 pension. But then - how can you make sure you still have a decent pension afterwards? What is affordability and how is it calculated?

In order to guarantee affordability, your total living expenses (mortgage interest, repayments, maintenance, and ancillary costs) should not exceed one-third of your gross income. Many financial institutions use a theoretical rate of 5% to calculate the mortgage interest to ensure that the mortgage would still be affordable if interest rates were to rise.

When you choose Helvetia, you’ll enjoy excellent support and documentation in English, in-depth knowledge of expat needs, consultancy on all insurance types, and an excellent claims service.
