TOP SLEDGING TIPS

Tobogganing with a twist

Hurray for winter! And for all Switzerland newbies out there – it’s time to discover … tobogganing! In Switzerland, sledging or tobogganing is as intense as you want it to be. You can sledge along steep mountain trails or mellow forest trails, you can sledge during the day, but also at night. You can use a classic Davoser wooden sledge or a much faster bob. In some snow parks, you can also slide your way down with an air board or a tube. Check out our top tips and enjoy some well deserved winter fun.

Fun in the snow

Don’t think snow parks are only for freestyle skiers or snowboarders. Most Swiss snow parks also include other fun winter activities for just about everyone.

Our tip:

Snow Park Trübsee in the lovely region of Engelberg. There’s snowtubing and other sliding devices you’ve probably never heard of, like the balancer – a type of snow scooter that looks as uncomfortable as it is fast (naturally, a kids’ favorite) or the Zipfelbob – we’ll let you discover that one on your own. If you’ve never tried snowtubing, now’s the time: it’s an absolute riot and perfectly safe.

Sledging the night away

Night-time tobogganing is an adventure to remember, and there are several trails available all over Switzerland.

Our tip:

Les Diablerets nighttime toboggan run, is one of the longest in the country. The journey from the top of Col de la Croix down through fields and forests to Les Diablerets will be one to remember! This toboggan run is sure not only bring you great sliding fun but also provide an experience unlike any other. Make sure you stop at the Les Mazots restaurant at the top before you begin your descent.

Beyond tobogganing

If you’re up to try something new and give up the traditional and sturdy wooden sledge, there are so many options available: we’ve mentioned snowtubing, balancer and Zipfelbob, but little did you know there are also snow scooters, skibock sledges or airboards.

Our tip:

Airboarding or bodyboarding. Airboard® is the registered trademark for a winter sport equipment developed in Switzerland. It’s lightweight, compact, suitable for all terrains, unlike a regular sledge – plus, it’s a lot of fun! Check out your closest Swiss Airboard Station if you’re looking to rent one.

CARVOLUTION CAR SUBSCRIPTION

JOIN THE

Meet Sean, a fellow expat Carvolutioner and find out why it makes financial sense to choose a car subscription when you are in Switzerland on a fixed term assignment.

Hi Sean! Tell us about yourself. My wife and I moved to Lausanne last year for work after 15 years in Washington, DC. We live in the city center just north of the train station. We’re passionate hikers, so when we’re not working, you’ll most likely find us exploring the trails in Vaud and Valais.

What an excellent way to spend your free time! How did you find out about Carvolution?

When we first got here, we were looking into getting a car for the duration of our stay. It was my wife’s employer

who recommended Carvolution as an alternative to traditional buying or leasing.

Did you consider other options than the car subscription? Yes, we also talked to some agents who were offering more traditional car buying or leasing options.

So then what made you choose Carvolution’s car subscription

First of all, the price. We got better prices for better cars from Carvolution than from other agents. Secondly, we liked to have everything all in one place,

especially the insurance. We don’t have the time or the local knowledge to chase the best insurance or the best car mechanic in our area, so we were happy to learn than Carvolution takes all this off our table.

How was the team at Carvolution? Did you get the help you needed?

Absolutely! They were super helpful. The Sales Manager explained everything to me without any pressure, and every time I have contacted customer service I found the responses very helpful.

FEATURED PARTNER: MOBILITY
Expats all over Switzerland love Carvolution. Here’s why more and more decide to drive a car on a subscription.
MOBILITY 10

What about your booking process? Did it go smoothly? Yes, it was very easy. I did everything online and ran into no issues

Did you get your car home delivered or did you pick it up in Bannwil?

I chose the first option, delivery to my home in Lausanne. And the car handover process was very smooth as well. The delivery date and time was clearly communicated, and the actual handover of the car took maybe 10 minutes.

What car did you choose and why?

The BMW 118i. My wife and I wanted a small but reliable car that would be just as good at navigating the tiny streets in cities across Europe as it is in climbing up to the good hiking spots in Valais.

Do you also drive abroad with your car?

Yes. We take advantage of the lovely sites in and around Switzerland, as well. We’ve taken the car into Italy a few times (Cinque Terre, Milan, and Lago d’Iseo so far) and also have trips planned to Lyon and Bologna. Of course, the train system is great here, but after the pandemic (and because we also have a dog) it’s wonderful to have a car for travel.

Have you changed your car yet?

No, I’m very happy with it.

What configuration and duration did you choose and why?

The 850 km/month configuration - it covers our needs pretty well and allows room for spontaneous trips. We also chose the 36-month contract - we expect

to live in Lausanne for 3-5 years and, even though it is pretty easy to change your car with Carvolution, we liked the idea of having the same vehicle for most of the time we are here.

Are you using the app?

Yes, quite often! It‘s perfect for tracking the mileage, but the fuel level gauge is probably what I use most. In countries where you need to prepay your fuel –like Italy – it‘s awesome to know exactly how much fuel there is still in your tank.

In what way is life with Carvolution easier?

As an expatriate living abroad, there is a lot to figure out on your own. Some of that is part of the fun of relocating, but I appreciate that Carvolution has made insurance, and car maintenance or tire changes a non-issue. It frees up my time to focus on the fun things and drive carefree wherever I want.

What do you like about Carvolution in particular?

How straightforward it is to secure a car through Carvolution. We wanted a car right away – for trips to the big box stores, for hiking trips (we arrived in springtime). But there are 10,000 other things to do when you first arrive in a country. I don’t even know if I could have legally owned or leased a car before my I received my official residence permit. Carvolution made all of that a non-issue

-- we had a car within a few weeks and we were ready to explore!

Would you recommend Carvolution? And if yes, to whom?

I would definitely recommend Carvolution to new arrivals in Switzerland or to people who prefer a more flexible car ownership model.

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE CARVOLUTION?

Carvolution is the most popular car subscription provider in Switzerland and offers around 40 models of various brands.

Carvolution brings a unique customer experience and highly attractive prices. You can select your car and subscription type online: choose the car you like, choose the contract duration, customize the kilometer package and pick your deductible. The fixed monthly price includes everything that’s car related. You don’t have to worry about insurance, taxes, license plates, service or tires. It’s the simple alternative to buying or leasing a car. Your Carvolution subscription can be managed via the app, your kilometer package can be adjusted monthly and you can report any damages with just a few clicks. Now isn’t that easy?

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

A preventive check-up can save you years of pain and costly treatment. But do you know the right way to approach prevention?

At Hirslanden we strongly advocate prevention, identifying underlying issues through preventive health check-ups.

With world-renowned surgeons throughout the entire Hirslanden network, our patients know that whatever their medical need they will be in the best possible hands. In many cases, the treatment patients need to undergo, may not have been necessary if there had been a preventive check-up. Early-stage diagnosis for most conditions is critical as it provides patients with severalless invasive - options and greatly increases their prospects of a long and happy life.

Prevention done right

Efficient prevention means all preventive check-ups are highly personalized. A personalized check-up always starts with a full assessment of your current medical situation to determine all risk constellations.

For a preventive evaluation of the health of a particular organ, or if significant illnesses have previously occurred in your family (for example, bowel cancer), we recommend an organ-specific preventive health checkup. These preventive programs are put together on a specialty-specific basis, and deal with an organ system (for example, the skin is covered by Dermatology).

How does a preventive genetic assessment work?

If drug therapy is necessary, a genetic assessment of drug effectiveness contributes significantly to minimizing the risk of treatment failure or drug intolerance. Pharmacogenetics uses information about a person’s genetic constitution, or genetic make-up, to choose the drugs and medicine doses that will be most effective for that person. This innovative field combines pharmacology (the science of how drugs work) with the science of human genomes.

Hirslanden’s ‘Precise’ program intends to use genetic analyses to adapt drug therapy to each individual patient in terms of type and dose. The goal is to make drug therapy safer and more effective.

With 17 top-class hospitals throughout Switzerland and a network of over 3,000 specialized doctors, Hirslanden is the largest private hospital group in Switzerland. When you are a patient at Hirslanden, you can be confident that every possible avenue will be explored and discussed, and that you will receive the best possible treatment for your condition. We take a look at the main differences in terms of health insurance system between Switzerland and other European countries.

Any foreigner in Switzerland, especially those coming from EU countries, goes through a slight cultural - and financialshock once they understand the Swiss insurance model and see its hefty fees. Let’s take a closer look at why that happens.

No state subsidies

Very different from the UK or France, Switzerland’s health care system is not subsidized by the state. Nor is it a combination of state subsidies and private insurance, as in Germany. The Swiss health care system resembles more the US health care system, where contributions are entirely private.

Individuals pay for health insurance

If you’re coming from the UK, then the fact that you’re entirely responsible for choosing and paying for your health insurance will be a definite surprise. On the plus side though, you do not have to finance all health costs by yourself, thanks to the franchise system.

How does the franchise system work?

To be able to have access to health care in Switzerland, you’ll pay monthly

insurance premiums and also part of the cost of medical treatment or any kind of medical interventions. You will contribute to these costs, together with your health insurer. All your medical invoices must go to your insurer. You will have to pay all of them until you reach your franchise limit. After that limit, it is the insurer who handles the costs. Your share of the payments depends on the type of coverage you have.

The various insurance models

Another difference that boggles the minds of most Europeans is the numerous insurance models. What are the advantages or disadvantages between the GP or the Telmed model? What is the HMO model? Which one could work better for you?

The type of insurance model you choose will determine whether you are free to choose your doctor at any point or limit your choice of medical provider to a pool of doctors determined by the insurance company.

If you are choosing, for instance a GP Model, you can save money on the premium side, but must respect the rules combined with the model.

It can certainly be complicated to choose the best health insurance as an expat, especially when you’re not 100% fluent in the language of the canton you live in. Our partner, SWICA makes it easier for you. Thanks to innovative telemedicine options, online tools that do away with bureaucracy and English support so you won’t feel lost trying to understand legal terms in a foreign language, SWICA is one of the best health insurers in Switzerland.

9 TOP IDEAS FOR SKI-SHY FOLKS

Depart from the mainstream

If you’re not strapping on a pair of skis, then there are countless fun and exciting winter activities that won’t involve you being stranded at a café at the bottom of the ski run and stuck behind a book as you sip on hot chocolate all day. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!).

1.

Go on a winter hike with snowshoes

One of the very best ways to get outdoors in winter is also one of the easiest to do: Snowshoeing. Most ski resorts have marked trails, and snowshoes can be rented at local ski shops. We’ve already included in our magazine an excellent guided tour of the UNESCO heritage site Aletsch Glacier in canton Valais. Have a look at page 6).

2. Savour the view

The Salève plateau, called the ‘Balcony of Geneva’, offers extraordinary panoramic views of the area in winter. There’s a cable car on the weekends, but why not hike up instead? Free guided hikes on the Salève are offered all year round every Sunday by the Association Genevoise des Amis du Salève.

3. Learn curling

What could be more Swiss than curling? Find out where your local curling center is and register for a class.

4. Relax in an outdoor thermal spa

Spas with outdoor thermal pools are one of the best ways to enjoy panoramic views. Family and friends who’ve been skiing can join you there when they get off the slopes. For example, there’s Leukerbad, in Valais, with 30 different thermal baths from which to choose and we have more suggestions on page 28 of our magazine.

5. Go eskimo and sleep in an igloo

Make an igloo. Feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with building

your own house in a single day and learn a few snow survival skills in the process. You can also spend an exciting night in the mountains in one of Switzerland’s igloo-villages (some of them even have a whirlpool!).

6.

Drive a dog pulled sled

If building an igloo seems too tame, why not learn to drive a dog sled? The Vallée Verte area also boasts lessons in dog sledding.

7. Brr…a winter swim!!!

A genuine local winter activity that is not for the faint of heart is training for winter swimming in Lake Geneva. Starting in October, intrepid swimmers meet on Sundays at 10am at the Rotonde des Bainsdes-Pâquis to prepare for the Coupe de Noël in December. Warm up afterwards in the saunas at the Bain-desPâquis, which are open all winter.

8. Visit a glacier

Visit a glacier and experience these beautiful and disappearing wonders. Make your own list and see how many you can view this season.

9. Learn animal tracking

Find out what all those prints in the snow mean, and about the animals that share the mountains and forests with us. Learn animal tracking in the snow! Courses available at LaLibellule in Geneva.

PLAN, SAVE & BUY PROPERTY IN SWITZERLAND

Learn how from a Helvetia insurance expert

First of all, can foreigners buy property in Switzerland?

If you have a valid residence B permit, you may acquire property or an existing building for your own use. If you have a C permit for Switzerland, you may buy more than one plot of land for residential use or real estate of any kind without special authorization.

How do mortgages work in

Switzerland?

The bank finances a maximum of 80% of the market value of the property. You have to contribute at least 20% of the purchase price. At least half of that amount must be your own funds and not taken from your employee benefits insurance.

Mortgage financing is divided into a first mortgage and a second mortgage.

The first mortgage can cover up to a maximum of 66% of the purchase price. If you need more financing, then you’ll need to take out a second mortgage.

The second mortgage must be repaid in regular instalments over a maximum of 15 years before you reach the age of 65.

Are
planning
in Switzerland? For most foreigners living here, this is a painful topic. The high property purchase price, the complex mortgage system, the limited availability – and your list of hurdles doesn’t stop here. Helvetia sheds some light on the topic and adds some expert tips.

Do you know which funds to use for your 20% contribution?

You’ll be happy to know that the list is generous. The funds you are allowed to use for your 20% can mean savings and securities holdings, pension capital, life insurance, gifts, or inheritance advancements. Presumably, the most significant contribution, will come from your Pillar 2 pension. But then - how can you make sure you still have a decent pension afterwards?

What is affordability and how is it calculated?

Affordability is quite a simple calculation of your income versus the property costs. As a basic rule to estimate affordability, the cost of the property should not exceed one third of the borrower’s gross income. Let’s see what that means more in detail.

In order to guarantee affordability, your total living expenses (mortgage interest, repayments, maintenance, and ancillary costs) should not exceed one-third of your gross income. Many financial institutions use a theoretical rate of 5% to calculate the mortgage interest to ensure that the mortgage would still be affordable if interest rates were to rise. Yearly maintenance and ancillary costs such as utilities, insurance, and minor repairs, are then added to this at a general annual rate of 1% of the market value.

Noisy hustle and bustle, colourfully disguised characters and a boisterous atmosphere: all this and much more is the Fasnacht in Chur, which attracts tens of thousands of people to the city every year and prompts extraordinary creativity.
