Are you a Valentine’s Day fan or not and why?

Hello Pretoria is published by Spinner Communications (Pty) Ltd. Established in 1980 Hellopretoria.co.za No! I don’t mean to Spinnercom.com

be a cynic but I don’t need a reminder once a year to show my wife some love and attention. I do that every day.

Hello, Pretoria! I’m not really the one to ask what I will be doing for Valentine’s Day as my husband and I rarely celebrate the day. It’s not because we’re antiValentine’s, but rather because we believe you need to celebrate love (and life) every day. Still, the 14th of February poses as a particularly good excuse to celebrate, so in this issue we’ve included a good line-up of things to do on Valentine’s Day and beyond. Speaking of celebrating love and life, we’ve just welcomed our son, Elian in the world and what a blessing! He’s brought with him a calm, curious look in his eyes – something that makes me think he’s going to grow into being a true explorer. We love exploring, even if it’s just within our own city. We hope you enjoy the read and use some of the tips and ideas we share to go out and explore Pretoria like we do. Go ahead and spoil your loved one(s) this month of love and share your stories with us by tagging #hellopretoria. Also, don’t forget to visit www.hellopretoria.co.za for some fun giveaways and entertaining reads this month.

Definitely a fan! Who doesn't love a day where you can celebrate your loved one?

Yes. Not like we need one but it’s an excuse to show and give love to those closest to you.

I’ve made every day Valentine’s Day, because love (and life) needs to be celebrated daily.

Absolutely! I’m a hopeless romantic and any excuse to celebrate what makes the world go round, right?! No, I'm not. The day adds pressure to show appreciation. Yes, you’re allowed to eat as many chocolates as you want and no one will say a word! I don't believe in Valentine's Day. Love should be celebrated daily, whether there is money involved or not. Yes, it's always nice to show appreciation for the people you love.

These buildings, situated atop Meintjieskop in Arcadia, offer a comprehensive view of the city. ADJANI

A little piece of Italy in the heart of Pretoria

U

pon entering the Adjani store, situated in Garsfontein, I immediately noticed all the colours that I am surrounded by. Adjani Schoeman, the owner, fell in love with the art of glassblowing and although she was studying to be an interior designer, in her heart she knew that there was a future for her. She did research and discovered that it can be done at a smaller scale via Flameworking. Hence, Adjani began.

Words Carli Manser Images Supplied

After a friendly greeting, Adjani and I sat down in her studio for a chat. Why did you choose Murano glass? “Murano just refers to the island in Italy where it is imported from. Murano is renowned for its long tradition of glassmaking. We receive the stock in long, thin pieces, almost looking like a straw and from there we mould it into beads which we then shape. Glass, however, is very temperamental. It is a delicate process of melting, movement, shaping and cooling.”

What qualities do you believe a piece of jewellery should possess? I like simplistic shapes, clean lines and colour. Quality and value for money should also be factored in. Tell me more about Adjani’s team? We are a close-knit team of three. Lawrence oversees the flameworking. He shapes every piece of glass by hand and takes it through the whole process. Then we have Monja, which brings our glass to life by making it into jewellery pieces. Do you have a message for prospective customers? “Wherever you can, try to support local businesses. If you want something that is so unique and so specially made, Adjani is your go-to. We are always open for custom designs too.” What can we look forward to from Adjani in 2020? “I am currently in the process of extending

my Africa range, which I am very excited about. It will include beautiful pieces with the protea design that is currently on the homeware. Our products will be on display at Kamers in Johannesburg and Tierlantyntjies in Pretoria, in April. Then I will be exhibiting in Paris in September and Miami in October. I am also hoping to boost my online shop and attract more buyers for that. We are planning on revamping our studio and adding a little coffee shop for shoppers. So yes, 2020 will be an interesting year for Adjani.” So Pretorians, make your way down to Adjani’s to see some Fun facts incredible pieces, l Adjani recently handmade with launched their “Love” range, glass all the way just in time for Valentine’s day! from Italy! l

hen we first heard that the pod heats up to 37°C, we didn’t think that we would be able to finish a whole hour of this exhilarating exercise. And to be fair, there were a few moments that we did feel like we were melting away, but that’s just the beauty of it all! The heat of Hotpod Yoga helps aid the muscles into flexibility and elevates your heartrate, making it a complete full-body workout.

Yoga carries the title of a de-stressing exercise with transformative benefits. These benefits include increased flexibility and muscle strength, more oxygen-rich blood reaching the muscles and improved metabolism.

But what makes this type of yoga so special? For starters, it is not restrictive. The Vinyasa flow allows you to soften from one position into the next and it creates a flawless ebb of the body. You use your body as a tool for relaxation and meditation.

The best part is that you don’t necessarily have to be athletic. This might just be the spark for a life-long hobby and a journey to a better mind, body and soul.

Hello Pretoria • February 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

PRIVA LOUNGE The ultimate contemporary, luxurious fine-dining experience

Priva Lounge is a fine-dining gem with breathtaking views, nestled in the lavish Waterkloof valley. The word Priva means private and intimate – something the restaurant definitely lives up to.

M

ichael, a sommelier in training, greeted us as we arrived at Priva Lounge. We walked through to our neatly set table on the balcony, overlooking a perfectly timed Pretoria sunset. Just as we’ve settled in, Marko Jovancic, the owner warmly welcomed us. He shares ownership with Fortunato Mazzone and together they opened Priva five and a half years ago.

Words: Carli Manser Images: Carli Manser

Our experience was kicked off with a French Martini and the Gold Rush whiskey cocktail, which was nominated for best cocktail of the year in 2019. This was served with two freshly baked bread rolls and sweetened butter. Then came a trio of dressed oysters and salmon tartare with wasabi cream and burst-in-your-mouth rooibos spheres. The second course boasted springbok carpaccio and a duck salad prepared with pickled golden beets, burned oranges and a honey soy glaze. As Marko guided us through the courses, his knowledge about the accompanying wines was astonishing. We were then treated to a tour of The Gastronomique Lounge. Marko proudly showed us his state of the art, temperature-controlled wine vault, which includes over 400 wines. We also made our way to the cigar room, where cigars are kept in a walk-in humidor. A whiskeyfilled cabinet acts as the backdrop for the main area and a live jazz band added to an atmosphere of luxury. The smoking room, filled with leather couches and a strategically placed overhead extraction fan, made us feel like we had just walked into a scene from The Godfather. For our third course, Priva spoiled us with an ambrosial sirloin with red wine reduction and their pièce de résistance: braised lamb shoulder, wild mushroom risotto, orange glazed carrots and green beans,

perfectly paired with a glass of the Motorcycle Marvel Red Blend from Nederburg Winery. A heavenly combination of taste and texture. Up next was pork belly with pumpkin tart and homemade crackling and we also had venison medallions served with Amarula sweet potato mash. Both dishes were served with an unwooded pinot noir from Haute Cabriere. Dessert was strawberry Crème Brûlée and vanilla panna cotta, served with saffron pistachio sorbet and while we indulged, our host, Marko entertained us with anecdotes of his travels and gave us some inside info on his homeland, Serbia. Priva is a sophisticated playground for fine food lovers and wine moguls. Be sure to add it to your Pretoria bucket list for February, HP!

PS: Priva has a special Valentine’s offering which includes a set menu for two, a gorgeous bottle of Ponte Villoni Prosecco and the service charge included at R1500 per couple. They also have a lovebird special all year round, which includes a three-course meal with wine pairings at R850 per couple. VALENTINE TO SWOO Cherry Tomato and Bacon Frittata

by: Lorrain

e Swanep

oel

Surprise your loved one with this mouth-watering Cherry Tomato and Bacon Frittata, perfect for a lovely, lazy breakfast in bed. Serves 4 Ingredients: 150g streaky bacon (or any bacon of your choice) 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter 150g cherry tomatoes, the smaller the better 6 large eggs salt and black pepper, to season 1 cup (120g) grated cheddar Chopped chives for garnish Method: Make sure to choose a pan that is oven friendly. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Fry the bacon in olive oil until crispy. Add the cherry tomatoes and swirl around in the pan for 2 minutes. The skin of the tomatoes will start to toast. While frying, take a medium bowl and whisk together the eggs. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Whisk until well blended; then add the cheese.

Remove the pan from the oven with a kitchen towel. Let it cool slightly, then sprinkle with chopped chives. Lift the frittata out with your spatula, cut it into wedges and serve warm or at room temperature. Or, cover and refrigerate for up to 1 day and serve cold. Tip: You can cut the chives using a kitchen scissor to make it easier. You can also easily use any left-over ingredients in your fridge with a frittata. Lorraine is the owner and creative force behind Cocovanilla Foods. Her passion for food, together with her strong entrepreneurial spirit has built Cocovanilla Foods up to the well-known catering company that it is today. They pride themselves in offering a unique food experience with every event using only high-quality local food produce.

Evenly distribute the tomatoes and bacon. Reduce the heat and pour the egg and cheese mixture over the tomatoes and cook until the egg mixture is set at the edges (about 3 minutes). Use a heat-resistant rubber spatula and carefully work your way around the edge of the pan, gently separating the edge of the cooked eggs from the edge of the pan - almost gently lifting the edges, allowing the uncooked portion to flow underneath. Carefully smooth the top with the spatula. When the eggs are softly set, after about 3 minutes, transfer the pan to the oven and bake until the frittata is just set, and no runny egg is left on top. This will take roughly about 5-7 minutes.

The ultimate CAPE TOWN

Advertorial

Fall head over heels with the Mother City in 2020 It’s time to fall in love. It’s the month of romance after all. And what better way to honour those you hold dearest than with a mini vacay in the most beautiful city in the world and Africa’s number-one tourist destination? Forgive us Jozi, but Cape Town’s majestic mountainscapes and azure waters that make up the Atlantic Ocean are both inexplicable and incomparable!

SLEEP AND EAT A stopover to sweep you off your feet: The Marly Boutique Hotel & Spa – Camps Bay This location deserves five stars and it simply does not get better – the view couldn’t be more perfect, and you’ll never have to look at the same view twice. Just when we thought the hotel couldn’t be improved, the newly renovated hotel now boasts 40 sophisticated designer rooms and suites with endless mountain and sea views.

32

from your room, is where you can have dinner. Choose from shucked oysters to sesame seared ahi tuna to pan roasted mussels or delve deep into their double smash burger or hot pastrami dog. Otherwise, skip the mains and order their Campfire and Marshmallow dessert: Chocolate, oat cookie crumble, praline ice cream and marshmallows. Breakfast is served at Bilboa Restaurant (also downstairs) and there is a gorgeous selection of fresh pastries, granola, seasonal fruits, toasts, omelettes and scrambles. But we recommend opting for the Jerusalem bagel with cream cheese smoked salmon and adding an easygoing boiled egg. Oh, and their coconut yoghurt served with homemade carb-clever granola is reason enough to visit this hotel!

We were so happy to discover this masterpiece of a hotel because you become immersed in Cape Town’s beauty the minute you arrive. The property just ticks all the right boxes – think a rooftop bar with the towering mountain as a backdrop; a silky turquoise pool overlooking Camps Bay Beach; and royal, spacious and comfortable rooms. It’s intimate and boutique in nature but still of the highest quality and access to the finest dining options.

After your taste buds are gratified, why not visit the gleaming Marly Spa? It’s a confection of Carrara marble pared down modernist fittings and a menu of top-to-toe face and body treatments from some of the world’s leading spa brands. Thanks to its all-white interiors, slick manicure bar, pedicure stations and four tranquil treatment rooms (where guests can even customise their lighting and music preferences), The Marly Spa is a cocoon of luxury and exclusive comfort. Unique to the Marly Spa are their 30-minute Ling Express Facials. Developed by facialist to supermodels and the stars and owner of Ling New York, Ling Chan, these targeted face treatments provide a guaranteed instant result ... in just 30 minutes.

With an icy G&T in hand as the rose-orange sunset sets, you’ll soon find yourself mesmerised by the surrounding beauty. Here, you won’t need a few days to settle into your holiday – it’s instant. Plus, there’s something about a boutique hotel that makes you feel like you’re at home, which we always appreciate. Surfshack, located just downstairs

and particular personal touches.

All this is set on 11.5 acres of evergreen gardens exploding with hydrangeas and pyramids of trees and lush bush. You could spend hours just gazing at the pretty swimming pool and gorgeous gardens whilst inspecting the local owl family. The rooms also beg to be enjoyed – you have the option of rooms situated amongst three classical heritage manor houses. Each room is exquisitely designed, extremely spacious and deserves to brag about its extra-length king size bed, 300 thread count linen and 100% Egyptian cotton. You’ll be oh-so-pleased! A few metres away from the hotel you’ll have access to two restaurants: La Belle Bistro & Bakery for breakfast and Blanko for dinner. Beginning your holiday with a La Belle breakfast is a delight in itself – they serve fresh artisanal stone oven breads, buttermilk pancakes, French toast with burnt butter, maple and bacon or smoked salmon trout eggs Benedict all with a side order of brewing coffee or a delicious smoothie or raw juice. And did we mention that La Belle is a bakery too? So, pop in for afternoon tea as well for a delectable carrot drizzle cake, a mouth-watering red velvet baked cheesecake and a classic milk tart.

A historical winelands wonder: The Alphen Boutique Hotel - Constantia

For dinner at Blanko, which is Italian inspired, they serve an impressive array of superior local wines plus a heavenly carbonara pasta packed with robust flavours and a delicious asparagus risotto. Take note: Pre-dinner we recommend visiting Incognito Bar for a sundowner. It’s the perfect way to end off an idyllic day!

Step back in time into the 17th century and embark on a once-in-alifetime travel adventure. What was once a wine estate has now become a much-loved boutique hotel, which offers a cosy experience and allows for a different mindset because of the attention to detail

from Africology Africology is cruelty free and does not test on any animals whatsoever. What inspired the passion for sustainable beauty? It began with the awareness of what chemical ingredients can do and their impact on the body and environment. Africology is deeply committed to empowering consumers and helping them make conscious choices, while honouring the universe, nature and its intelligence. Based on years of research, we have gained an in-depth knowledge about the chemicals used in cosmetics and the effect they have on the human body. Thus, Africology’s authenticity is expressed within our manufacturing ethos. What are some of the challenges that come with sustainable beauty brands? To actively project an overall consciousness within the beauty industry is tough. For instance, it’s been a struggle over the years to actually educate and guide suppliers as well as consumers into understanding the importance of a more sustainable and greener outlook in cosmetics. Surprisingly, there are a lot of people who are unaware, and it’s our mission to empower consumers and help them make conscious choices. What are your most popular products? That’s a tough one as we have quite popular list, but to narrow it down to a few: The Skin Conditioning Marula Oil, Body Butter, Oud Diffuser, Vitamin Skin Boosting Serum and Absolute Rose Serum. Are there any exciting launches planned for 2020? Absolutely! We have a new fragrance, candle and diffuser planned to launch in the upcoming months. Our latest product release is our Magnesium, Charcoal and Shimmer Bath Bombs, which we are very excited about.

Tell us about the inception of the brand. The brand has humble beginnings in our family kitchen where our mother and the brand’s CEO, Renchia Droganis would make homemade products for her reiki treatments. She would mix her own bespoke skincare products using essential oils, which proved to be very beneficial to her clients and soon enough the word spread to a spa. We were very involved in the development of the brand doing things like giving up bedrooms to ensure that there was enough space for stock boxes, cutting labels by hand, mixing and filling bottles and, of course, our lunchboxes would always smell of essential oils! It wasn’t just Renchia’s passion anymore – it became ours too.

What makes Africology unique? We are committed to blending pure, natural ingredients with love and divine intention as well as to harm no one by being conscious of our planet and all who inhabit it. Our formulations are enhanced with nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are bio-identical to your biology. Hello Pretoria • February 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Any favourite products for the summer? Definitely our SPF 30 – a mineral-based sunscreen that’s recommended for sensitive skin. It’s lightweight and chemical-free and is formulated with active ingredients that nurture and nourish the skin. The beauty of a mineral-based sunscreen is that the minerals simply sit on top of the skin’s surface, effectively reflecting harmful UV rays away. It’s non-irritating and naturally fragranced with calming herbal active ingredients. More benefits of our SPF are that it’s vegan-friendly and is backed by dermatological testing. Eliana Droganis-Haniff and her brother, Vassilli Droganis are both directors at one of South Africa’s leading natural beauty and skincare brands, Africology. The brand was started by their mother, Renchia Droganis in early 2000 and now distributes to over 350 five-star spas countrywide. We sat down with this sibling duo to find out more.

What are some must-try Africology treatments? Our Oxygen Facial Therapy and Shamans Healing Journey, as all beauty starts from within. Our ethically sourced combination of homeopathy and plant essences are blended with the science of biotechnology to bring visible change and every ingredient used in our treatments has been chosen carefully with your safety and health placed above all else.
