Union Buildings This prominent heritage site is home to the official seat of government and the presidential office. These buildings, situated atop Meintjieskop in Arcadia, offer a comprehensive view of the city. It was designed by Sir Herbert Baker in 1910 and the architecture of the Union Buildings symbolises and marks the union of the English and Afrikaans languages after years of war. The Union Buildings have also seen some historical events, including women marching against apartheid pass laws on 9 August 1956 and of course, it is here where Nelson Mandela was inaugurated in 1994 as our first democratic president. You can’t enter the buildings, but you can enjoy the scenic gardens and the two statues of General Louis Botha riding his horse and the 9m bronze statue of Nelson Mandela that was erected after his death in 2013. Entrance: Free Q www.thepresidency.gov.za/

Church Square Built in 1855, this is where the city’s first church stood proud. Unfortunately, the church burnt down in 1882, but the architecture in and around Church Square is phenomenal and still a must-see for all. Historical buildings include the Palace of Justice, where Nelson Mandela and his cronies were trialed and sentenced for the notorious Rivonia Trial. Other dignitary buildings include the Old Capitol Theatre, the Ou Raadsaal, Old Nederlandsche Bank, Tshwane Tourism and the General Post Office. Entrance: Free Q www.gauteng.net
