ello, March! It’s officially that time of year when things started getting real. We’re two months into the new year (can you believe it?) and it’s time to start ticking things off that #20plenty bucket list! With that in mind, we thought there’s no better time to put together an issue dedicated to eating and travelling like a true Joburger, filled with must-dos to experience the City of Gold like a local. Our cover star this month is the newest addition to the hot foodie district of Linden that locals are already flocking to on weekends – Gaucho Restaurant. Flip to our cover feature to read all about this gem dedicated to the food cultures of South America along with two other local hotspots. A personal favourite is Sotto Sopra, the new Italian restaurant that’s opened on Keyes Art Mile. The Malfy G&Ts and top-notch pizzas at this colourful, art-filled spot are what Sunday afternoon dreams are made of !

The African-inspired Qunu at The Saxon Hotel in Sandhurst is always special Saigon Suzy in Fourways – it’s one to add to your Jozi bucket list!

Here’s to a marvellous March!

heartwarming STORY

lifestyle

THE

of Daru Fouchè

Daru Fouchè, diagnosed with clear cell sarcoma, had always dreamed of flying in a helicopter. When he was three years old, his dream was fulfilled thanks to the Reach For a Dream Foundation. We got the full story on his dream that came true.

HOW DID YOU PLAN TO EMBELLISH THE DREAM/ MAKE THE DAY SPECIAL? We embellished the day by packing a picnic lunch for him to enjoy with his parents afterwards and he was able to go into the hanger and look at all the aircraft and take pics with his parents. TELL US ABOUT THE DAY? Daru is the cutest most energetic little guy you will ever meet. His biggest dream was to fly in a helicopter. It is all he ever talks about. So, when we arrived at Westline Aviation he was super excited and couldn’t wait to get inside the helicopter and take off. He ran ahead of all of us toward the helicopter exclaiming in delight all the way. After posing for a few pics with mom and dad and the pilot, it was time to take off. Christelle from Westline Aviation was the pilot for the day and helped Daru into the front seat of the helicopter. Nothing could wipe the smile off his face. While his dad climbed into the back seat, Daru ‘helped’ his pilot do all the pre-flight checks before it was time to take off. The wonderful people from Westline flew Daru over Bloem for almost 30 minutes and showed him all the sights before coming to land so mom could have a turn to fly too. Daru chattered away to the Pilot the whole way and marveled at everything. He couldn’t believe that his dream had finally come true. We had all been so worried that he would be scared but honestly, he is the bravest little threeyear-old I have ever met, and he wasn’t even a little scared. He was completely and utterly overjoyed. When they landed for the last time and Daru got out, he jumped up and down with glee and giggled in absolute delight before making a beeline for me and jumped into my arms hugging me tight. He thanked me for making his dream come true and told me that it was the best thing ever and how much he loved the whole experience. It was such a beautiful dream that I will remember forever. The smile on his face makes everything so worthwhile.

YSL UNVEILS A BRAND-NEW FRAGRANCE

8

SORBET SALON PRO HAND CREAMS ARE HERE!

Yves Saint Laurent has a brand-new fragrance called Libre – French for ‘free’ – a feminine scent that plays with ideas of freedom. Libre is the product of 15,000 variations and seven years of collaboration between master perfume makers, Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm and has top notes of mandarin orange, lavender and blackcurrant, which are undercut by base notes of Madagascan vanilla and musk. The fresh lavender is the ingredient that gives Libre its edge, as lavender is typically associated with more masculine fragrances. The bottle embodies the main theme of the scent and features the YSL sign tipped on its side, while the trim geometric lines echo those of a tailored suit. Available from Edgars, Truworths, Foschini and Woolworths.

Sorbet has just brought out a deliciously rich line of hand creams that are made specially for dry, chapped and mature hands. The range includes six new products, all formulated with specialised ingredients such as Q10, collagen and tissue oil, making them ideal for those longing for moisture and glow. One of the standout releases from the line includes the Salon Pro Conditioning Hand and Nail Treatment, which contains active peptides and ceramides. The products are now available at Sorbet salons and selected Sorbet Drybars nationwide and we cannot wait to get our hands on them!

The hotel has recently been rebranded by Tsogo Sun Hotels and has been modelled after their highly successful Southern Sun properties. Among the areas to be refurbished are the reception, lobby and Circle Bar. Other additions include the opening of The Grill Jichana, a new restaurant that serves flame-grilled premium cuts flavoured with tastes of the African East Coast spice route. The rest of the refurbishment, including that of the bedrooms, will take place over the course of this year and 2021 with little to disruption to hotel operations. 1 www.tsogosun.com

The structure of the yoga classes we teach makes it possible for students of all levels to participate.

MAVALA EXPANDS THEIR SKINCARE OFFERING

How did you get involved in Hotpod Yoga? I was looking to expand the offering of my studio,Yoga Warrior, by introducing hot yoga when I came across Hotpod Yoga. While reviewing the logistics of opening a branch, the then owner Daniella told me she was emigrating and that I could buy the Linden, Joburg franchise from her, which we did in January 2018. We opened a second branch in Melrose four months later.

FEEL GOOD Best for: Carbo-loading like a true Italian If you’re craving fritto misto di pesce, melanzane alla parmigiana, aglio olio e peperoncino and the best pizza in Joburg, you’ve come to the right place. In the Trumpet Building Atrium situated at the heart of Keyes Art Mile art precinct in Rosebank you’ll find trendy authentic Italian restaurant, Sotto Sopra that opened its doors late last year. Translating to ‘upside down’ or ‘topsy turvy’, the restaurant’s name pays homage to its bold, dynamic, playful and colourful aesthetic. There are two levels – the first area extends the idea of the traditional Italian trattoria experience and serves thin-base Roman style pizza and in-house handmade pasta in an open, relaxing and flamboyant dining area, while the other area offers a luxurious dining experience in a space decked with a luscious floor-to-ceiling plant wall and comfortable, cosy seating all behind glass doors looking out onto the buzzing city. Sotto Sopra uses the ethos that Italian food is all about using fresh ingredients to create extraordinary dishes as its foundation, and simply adds its own ‘spice’ to the food to make it suitable

HALLMARK HOTEL Best for: Brunch … mimosa … repeat We like to live by the words ‘work hard, brunch harder’, so seeking out the best brunch in Jozi is a weekend ritual for us. Sure, we want fresh oysters and perfect eggs benedict, but we’re looking for more than just breakfast – it’s a bottomless boozy brunch we’re seeking to make it feel like it’s truly the weekend. The good news is that we’ve finally found it at the historic Hallmark Hotel in Maboneng. Interesting fact? The Hallmark House was built in 1970 and used to be a diamond-polishing centre. Today, the 46-room Hallmark Hotel offers two in-house restaurants – The Marabi Club on the ground floor and the 999 Rooftop on the rooftop. Upon arrival for Sunday brunch, you’re taken up to the 15th floor and seated at the newly renovated rooftop restaurant, which offers unparalleled views of the city skyline (get your phone cameras ready!). Here, chef Katlego Mlambo, the 2019 Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star award winner, cooks up a brunch feast that’s tailor-made for imbibing. His buffet brunch menu features dishes like flaky, buttery and deliciously authentic croissants; an epic charcuterie board filled with cured meats,

to the South African palette. Start with an order of Sotto Foccacia generously topped with prosciutto crudo, burrata, roasted peppers, marinated aubergines and pesto or the crispy blend of fried seafood and the paper-thin, tender slices of rare sirloin. Then dig into a bowl of carbonara with seasoned pork cheeks and silky spaghetti smothered in some of the creamiest, cheesiest sauce we’ve ever tasted. There are plenty of mains to choose from, but you can’t go wrong with pizza – especially if you’re ordering the La Collina crowned with gorgonzola, avocado, chilli and garlic or the Prawn Paradiso garnished with peri-peri prawns. For dessert, there’s tiramisu, limonmisu, affogato, vanilla panna cotta and more. You can also expect to indulge in classic Italian cocktails like the Aperol Spritz, Negroni and Americano as well as Malfy G&Ts. Sotto Sopra is turning Italian cuisine not only with its à la carte offering, but six and nine course tasting menus with wine pairings too. 21 Keyes Avenue, Rosebank m 010 824 0777 K www.sottosopra.co.za E @sottosopra.za Q @sottosopra.trumpet

cheeses, nuts, olives and more; his tried and true Asian-style oysters and ceviche; salmon gravlax with a beautiful dill crust; and sushi, sashimi and build-your-own poké bowls. You’ll also get to choose one hot dish from the à la carte menu – we highly recommend the eggs royale for a luxurious yet lazy brunch. Once you’ve filled your face with all the savoury bits (and we do mean all the savoury bits), check out the giant dessert table. Brunch costs R350 per person and runs from 11h00 to 15h00 with live DJs starting at 12h00. It’s a good thing that cocktails are easy drinking because you’ll want more than one at the Hallmark Hotel’s Sunday brunch service. For an extra R250, you can order unlimited creative concoctions like the Smoked VSOP or Sunset Kiss, which will entice you to lounge all day and stretch brunch for hours. A cash bar and DJs continue from 15h00 and at 17h00 a tapas menu is offered. Be sure to book at least a week in advance as tables fill up quickly! 54 Siemert Street, New Doornfontein m 011 402 0086 K www.hallmarkhotel.co.za k reservations@hallmarkhotel.co.za E @hallmarkhotelmaboneng Q @hallmark_hotel

Market VALUE Must-visit weekend markets

Brystan Market at Michael Mount

Market on Main

From fruit and veg to crafts, Brystan Market at Michael Mount has it all. The main focus of this market is promoting conscious living and thus, it offers shoppers the chance to buy organic produce and ethically sourced goods. Visitors can expect over 90 stalls stocked with exquisite products, including crystals, Persian rugs and handmade beaded jewellery. Don’t even get us started on the amazing baked goods on offer, which include the most delightful cheesecake from Le Café. As if that wasn’t enough, we should also mention that there’s a play area for kids – a major bonus for all parents – and you can bring your furry friends along as long as they’re leashed!

Located in the Arts on Main complex in the trendy Maboneng district, Market on Main has become known as one of Jozi’s best Sunday markets and it’s not hard to see why. The market is a true reflection of South Africa as a melting pot of African culture and offers visitors the chance to try authentic cuisine from all over the continent, including Shiro – a type of spiced chickpea purée from Ethiopia. There’s also a number of South African classics on offer like bunny chow, samoosas and boerewors rolls. PS: The stunning wall murals make this a great spot to snap a few Instagram pics.

Neighbourgoods Market With a beautiful setting and an even better atmosphere, the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein is hands down one of the best places to spend a Saturday in Jozi. There’s an amazing selection of gourmet street food, including pizzas, sliders and even oysters! It’s also a great place to sample delicious cocktails and shop fabulous brands like Rural Loves Classics – a brand that designs and manufactures South African inspired tees. Other standout features of this market include live DJ sets and the ample seating for visitors, which may sound boring but can really make or break a market.

Linden Market Although the Linden Market isn’t technically a weekend market, as it only occurs every few months, we couldn’t go without mentioning it. It’s held quarterly at the breathtaking Emmerentia Botanical Gardens and boasts over 160 stalls, making it one of the biggest markets in Jozi. The market is all about celebrating local talent and craftsmanship and features so many amazing homegrown brands – we’re talking screen-printed T-shirts from L2 Lyon, signature jewellery from Miss H Jewellery and home accessories from Native Décor. Of course, there’s always amazing food and drink on offer, such as mouth-watering waffles from Woodstock Waffles and refreshing G&Ts from Tonic. 45 Thomas Bowler Street, Emmarentia m 079 509 6446 K www.thelindenmarket.com E @thelindenmarket D @thelindenmarket

super-effective. We recommend using it as a day cream under your make-up or as a night cream in the summer months. If you’re not into fragranced face creams, this might not be for you though.

So, what can you expect from the new counter? Seeing as La Prairie prides itself on what the brand calls ‘Swissness’ or, in other words, sleekness and elegance with a bit of mystery, you can’t help but feel like you’re playing the role of a wealthy, stay-at-home mom from a ‘90s movie when you’re perusing the counter … you know, the kind clad in cashmere with a perfectly cut bob. The ornate outer packaging that looks like it could be in an art gallery is just the beginning – the real luxury can be found inside the gorgeous jars and bottles. When one thinks of La Prairie, the first thing that comes to mind is caviar. The brand capitalised on this intriguing ingredient back in 1987 with its debut caviar product, Skin Caviar Dermo Beads – beautiful caviar-like beads containing caviar extract that give skin a boost and help to renew its texture. With a focus on innovation and skin science, La Prairie has since expanded into a whole caviar collection that you can now shop at Woolworths Sandton City, including a body cream, a sleep mask and even a cushion compact foundation.

14

As for our favourite La Prairie products? The Skin Caviar Luxe Cream Sheer (R7,890) is a rich face cream in a sheer formula that every woman should have in her skincare collection. Reminiscent of a silky vanilla yoghurt but with a floral scent, it hydrates, plumps and firms your skin without feeling heavy. You won’t believe that a product so weightless can be so Hello Joburg • March 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Last but not least, we can’t live without the brand-new White Caviar Eye Extraordinaire (R8,500), which is basically a filter in a jar. Not only is it effective in brightening and lifting the skin, you’ll also be amazed when the wrinkles under your eyes nearly disappear within four to eight weeks. This rich eye cream also nourishes and comforts with deep moisture and does wonders at fading brown spotting under the eyes. Even if you don’t have pigmentation, you’ll appreciate the soft glow that comes from using it morning and night. Sure, La Prairie is pricy (to put it lightly), but we like to justify it as being an investment in your skin. Trust us – when you see the results, you’ll agree that the brand is more than just flashy bottles for the uber-wealthy. You may even be willing to break out your highest limit credit card for more … don’t say we didn’t warn you! uxury Swiss skincare brand, La Prairie has just opened a counter at Woolworths Sandton City – but it’s so much more than just a counter. There’s something to be said about this brand that’s managed to preserve its more traditional definition of luxury when other luxury brands are launching more affordable and accessible offshoots.

Another must-have in your antiageing routine is the Cellular Radiance Night Cream (R11,410), a beauty splurge for the face and décolletage, which ages faster due to sun exposure. Let’s be honest … gravity works against us ladies! While your body rests, this intensive nighttime treatment does its magic – it renews the skin, replenishes hydration and restores a natural glow. The secret is a moisture-binding complex of perfecting and anchoring peptides combined with mica and liquid crystals. Enveloping your skin in this night cream is the definition of utter luxury … all you see is pure radiance.

Much like the iconic concept store, meticulous attention has been given to the sounds and scents of the treatments here. Sophisticated plating techniques and aesthetically pleasing artistic designs ensure all your senses are captivated. Served with colourful stoned fruit and a roasted rosemary and garlic dressing, the soft, stringy burrata just begs to be devoured. The desserts are rather unusual with offerings of semolina orange and honey cake, lemon and cardamom custard, dark chocolate and red wine ice cream, and the famous kataifi – wrapped crispy dough bathed in rose and cardamom glaze served with a dollop of lemon and cream cheese icing. It’s a serendipitous creation! No matter what mood you’re in, visiting this five-star restaurant will challenge your ethos while satisfying your every craving. HOTSPOT

FIREROOM BEDFORDVIEW Putting the fun back in Asian fusion

A

sk which city has the best sushi in the country, and any toro fiend will tell you: Cape Town, obviously. Sushi may not be king in Joburg, but FireRoom at Village View in Bedfordview has the best sushi in the city to curb your appetite for salmon, tuna, rock shrimp and more. When the craving strikes for a meal at a high-end sushi restaurant, it’s hard to ignore the call of the ’view’s chief establishment for ultra-fresh seafood. The sushi experience here is on another level from the second you enter the doors. Upbeat music drifts through the refined space, a tasteful and dimly lit dining room that’s home to a handful of tables and the real showstopper, a sushi bar where chefs quietly steal the spotlight. It’s hard to say which is more of a treat: The expertly cut fish sourced from around South Africa or the chef ’s artful precision.

There’s also a smattering of small plates – we recommend the Langoustine Carpaccio drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette, Hong Kong Pears potato dumplings stuffed with duck, prawn and chicken as well as ‘The OG Shot’ oysters served in shot glasses with fresh lemon, Tabasco and black pepper. Bar One Sliders – deep fried Bar One nuggets with caramel and strawberry sorbet – finish the meal, though fans of the more traditional vanilla ice cream and Bar One sauce will find that at FireRoom, too. When your plate has been licked clean, a glass of dessert wine helps ease your way into the outside world.

FireRoom focuses on ‘Sushi on Fire’ that’s flamed at your table, such as the Fire Roll – crispy California rolls made with salmon, jalapeño and cream cheese topped with kewpie mayo and Yakitori sauce – and the Halloumi Crunch crunchy California rolls made with fried halloumi, peppadews and cubed avo topped with sticky Fantasy sauce and a signature seasoning. You’ll find classic Dragon and Tiger Rolls, Candy Roses topped with a candy glaze and popping candy, Springbok Roses made with springbok carpaccio, teardrop shaped Nacho Libre rolls and more as the meal marches on, with every plate as rich, tantalising and expertly prepared as the last one.

Lunch

Advertorial

GETS LAVISH … at The Hussar Grill Forget the office canteen and forego that pre-packed sandwich, as The Hussar Grill has reintroduced its perennially popular Lavish Lunch special until the end of April.

T

The Lavish Lunch can either be a leisurely affair, stretched over two-courses, or, guests can opt for the business-like efficiency of a single course special. The single-course lunch comes in at a mere R95 per head while the two-course meal consists of an incredible starter and main course combination at R130 per head. This outstanding value proposition come courtesy of a restaurant that places consistently in the Eat Out Top 150 and also offers a highly regarded wine list. Which is why The Hussar Grill, an enduring legend since 1964, continues to win hearts and palates. The Lavish Lunch specials both offer a choice of menu items, including a perfectly prepared 200g steak rump/sirloin- the kind for which this multiple award-winning restaurant is so rightly famed. Alternatively, find yourself tempted by gourmet burgers, deboned half-chicken, beerbattered hake, and wild mushroom and roasted butternut gnocchi. The lunch specials are best enjoyed with fine wine – there’s a large variety available by the glass and the restaurant makes its full award-winning wine list available for orders. Of course, guests are welcome to bring their own vintages to accompany their meal – The Hussar Grill never levies a corkage fee. The two lunch specials are available at all The Hussar Grill restaurants that are open during the day. Please be aware that one or two select outlets, such as The Hussar Grill Camps Bay in Cape Town, are open evenings only. The Hussar Grill Rondebosch in Cape Town is closed for lunch on Sundays only. Join a colleague or friend for a Lavish Lunch and remember that you can now purchase gift cards directly from the restaurant. AMORI BURGER

chef

of the month

Celebrated Chef Amori Burger has had a hand in opening some of Jozi’s best loved restaurants like Dukes Burgers,Tei Avon and, most recently, Van Der Linde, where she’s currently head chef. We sat down with her to talk about the restaurant and what she gets up to when she’s not cooking.

Words Amber Richardson Images Supplied

CAN YOU DESCRIBE VAN DER LINDE’S STYLE OF FOOD? We opened Van Der Linde in 2018 and the food on offer has evolved quite a lot since then. We’ve always tried to keep it simple and still do, but now the food is slightly elevated. We also try and use as much organic produce as possible WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS FROM? We try really hard to support small businesses. We get our eggs from a company called Joe’s Eggs in the Highlands. The chickens there run around in an orange orchard living their best lives. It obviously costs a bit more, but the chickens are happy, so it makes you happy. We get our meat from Filet Merchants in the Free State – it’s just one farmer who slaughters for three restaurants. The meat is incredible; it’s 95% grass-fed so it’s really good quality. TELL US ABOUT YOUR VEGAN MENU We run three menus, breakfast, lunch and dinner and our separate vegan menu. Veganism is huge and so the Vegan menu is super popular – The South African Vegan Association actually comes here once a month or so. The thing about vegan food is, people don’t get it right, they think just because you’re a vegan you have to eat vegetables. Many restaurants think a vegan option is just a plate of vegetables and that’s very unfair. One of our best sellers is a butterbean paste with roast sweet potato, curried carrots and coconut cream. Veganism doesn’t have to be boring!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DISH TO PREPARE? Starters, because you can be so much more creative than the mains. WHAT’S THE MOST POPULAR DISH? The filet steak for dinner. For breakfast it’s the eggs benedict and for lunch it would be the beef burger. WHAT SETS VAN DER LINDE APART FROM OTHER RESTAURANTS IN JOBURG? We’re a little bit more upmarket than other restaurants in Linden and we offer sustainable and non-GMO food. We’re also trying to get to a point where we don’t have once off plastic and only use reusable plastic in our shop. Organic food is also so important because as a chef I want the food that goes into a customer’s body needs to nourish them. We’re also opening a wine shop where you can come on a Sunday and buy boutique wine from us. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANTS IN JOBURG? Farro in Illovo – they’re constantly changing their menu. Also, Modena in Parkhurst and The Ant in Melville ... no one does pizza like them in Joburg! DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER PASSIONS APART FROM FOOD? I started pottery this year and it’s quite interesting. I want to make plates, but not necessarily for the restaurant. Other than that, no – a chef ’s life is about food. Although I do like hosting people at my house. 50 4th Avenue, Linden, Randburg m 010 594 5443 K www.vdl.restaurant E @vdlrestaurant D @vdlrestaurant Q @van_der_linde_restaurant Hello Joburg • March 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

B

oozy brunch is about more than drunk people in Melville. And you can forget plain old avo on toast too. If you’ve driven down Oxford Road in Rosebank lately, you’ve probably noticed the new spot in the BP building that spills out onto the road – The Greenhouse Bar. Brought to us by the same guys behind Babylon - The Joburg Bar in Illovo, The Greenhouse Bar hosts a Bubbles & Brunch event every Saturday from 11h00 to 15h00. “There’s no better excuse to have a cocktail before noon,” we thought, so we popped into this gorgeous indoor grotto to get the buzz of al fresco dining while avoiding the drizzle. We’ll admit it … we’re kinky for restaurants that are basically indoor gardens. It’s all about denial: Joburgers so rarely get to enjoy them, you see. This new bar has clocked on and provided a garden of paradise with all the dangling vines, fronds and flowers you could wish for – but it has a ceiling, too, so you can enjoy the space come rain or shine. There aren’t many tables inside, so we recommend booking in advance unless you don’t mind brunching on the couch. For sunny days, there are also smaller tables outside that look out onto the street. When we were seated, we were delighted to be served a complimentary glass of Pierre Jourdan MCC (your choice of brut or rosé) that you get if you order anything off the brunch menu. There’s no cover charge for the brunch event and the food and drinks are served à la carte, which makes it an affordable option for when you just fancy a mimosa with your mum. You can look forward to a good selection of dishes, from traditional Middle Eastern shakshuka to portobello mushrooms and falafels. After 15h00, you can order off the normal lunch and dinner menu.

28

Unfortunately, when we visited a number of dishes were unavailable, so we settled on the sea salt, herb and virgin olive oil flatbread with two dips – whipped garlic feta and roasted red pepper and walnut – and both the Asian chicken and spiced lamb fold-overs. Everything was simple yet delicious, although we were disappointed that none of the more inventive dishes were in stock. Fortunately, the cocktails made up for the food. From the classic Aperol Spritz to the fresh Watermelon Mint Julep, each one packed a hefty punch. We’ll be back to try some more the next time we need to unwind after a full day of deadline and meetings! Hello Joburg • March 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

The biggest letdown was the service. While our waiter was very friendly, he was unable to make any food or drink recommendations as he wasn’t familiar with the menu. Also, the service in general seemed to be extremely slow, with most tables waiting 30 to 40 minutes for their food. Hopefully these are just teething issues that will be sorted out soon. Nevertheless, we recommend checking out this new ‘garden of paradise’ for after-work drinks, a casual dinner or the Bubbles & Brunch event. The bar is open until till late Thursday to Sunday, so it’s also a great place for a few drinks before a big night out!

NOT-TO-BE-MISSED FOOD AND WINE EXPERIENCES DOLCI CAFÉ

Dolci Café, run by chef Jackie Righi-Boyd and her husband, wine aficionado Clayton Boyd, has unveiled a new wine cellar that features both well-known labels and some hidden gems. We often choose our wine before our meals and, likewise, we often choose a bottle to share on the table and then choose to eat very different meals. That’s where Clayton comes in – he’ll happily help you select a wine style for your personal palate that will go with all the meals on your table. One of his favourite wines on the list is the Antica Vigna Valpolicella imported from Italy. At only R270 a bottle, it’s certainly one of the best quality-versus-price wines on offer! GRAPE Therapy Start the new year with a change from your usual tipple

New year, new wines! There’s never been a better time to be a wine lover than now. If you’re in the market for something cool and unique to try in 2020, check out these wines that merit a second look. TOKARA MÉTHODE CAP CLASSIQUE Style: Fruity-earthy

ROBERTSON WINERY DRY NON-ALCOHOLIC SPARKLING WHITE Style: Fruity-floral

Tokara has just released the second vintage of its ultra-stylish Méthode Cap Classique. Not only does this dashing MCC come packaged in an unusual Butterfly bottle that’s specially designed to lend gravitas and sophistication, it’s also an incredibly moreish bubbly that will leave you yearning for another sip. A touch fruitier than French sparklers, this MCC has a fine, consistent mousse that interplays with aromas of freshly baked brioche, fresh apples and a hint of lemon blossom typical of chardonnay. Delicate bubbles explode in your mouth upon entry, leaving you with mouth filling flavours of toasted almonds, freshly buttered toast, notes of lemon and lime preserve and crisp minerality. It pairs excellently with chicken and pork dishes that play with sweet and sour flavours.

If you’re choosing to drink less because you’re embarking on a muchneeded detox or it’s your turn to be the designated driver, you can still enjoy the fun of fizz without the alcohol with the new Robertson Winery Dry Non-Alcoholic Sparkling White. Fun, bright, easy, light … that sounds like the description for the ideal summer day. This also happens to be the style of this delightfully dry wine with a vivacious sparkle. Gorgeous notes of pear and mandarin come to the fore accompanied by hints of orange blossom and honeysuckle, making it refreshing and charmingly drinkable. It’s perfect for every occasion – think poolside sipping, picnics, braais, sundowners at the beach, jovial chats around the table and partying with friends. Remember to serve it well chilled to keep the bubbles and flavours at their peak.

R650 from the cellar door (includes a gift box)

Between R50 and R55 from your local bottle store

GRANDE PROVENCE MERLOT 2018 Style: Fruity-spicy Grande Provence has given merlot its rightful place with the launch of a new single varietal wine offering – the summer-friendly Grande Provence Merlot 2018. The aromas of vibrant dark cherries and raspberries with hints of wild herbs, tomato leaf and dark chocolate enlivened by touches of cinnamon, cloves and orange peel will make you think you’re in a garden while you sip this wine. It’s a lovely, smooth medium bodied merlot with a soft and subtle finesse. We suggest chilling it briefly and serving it with herb-crusted lamb or rich meat dishes like roast duck, turkey and lean cuts of beef. When it comes to this merlot, it’s all about the sauce, so also try it with beef bourguignon. Don’t be surprised if your guests finish it long before dinner comes out the kitchen though!

City LIVIN’

What Joburgers really do on weekends

Since this issue is all about living like a local, we thought we’d round up some realistic weekend activities for you to do. Because let’s face it – not every Joburger spends their weekend sightseeing!

Do grocery shopping

Take fluffy for a walk The City of Gold has so many amazing attributes, but being walkable isn’t one of them, so the weekend is the ideal time to stretch your legs and take your fury friend out to one of Jozi’s amazing parks. We recommend Walkhaven, which boasts over 22-hectares of magnificent grasslands where your dog can run leash free. There’s loads of open space to play fetch and beautiful trees, so you can relax in the shade while your wet-nosed friend socialises with other hounds. Delta Park is another amazing dog-friendly spot that’s loved by locals. It has a stunning dam, small waterfall and is just the perfect place to soak up Joburg’s sunshine and natural beauty – not forgetting the mesmerising view of the Sandton skyline that’s also visible from the park. Bonus: It has some great jungle gyms for kids, making it a fantastic place for the whole family to enjoy!

Plot 77, Walkhaven Farm, Zwartkop K @walkhaven Hello Joburg • March 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Although grocery shopping isn’t the most glamourous thing to do on a Saturday morning, it’s a reality of everyday life. However, there are some spots in Jozi that actually make this mundane activity a lot more enjoyable. One of these is Impala Fruit and Veg – a family run business located in Northcliff, which stocks fresh, organic fruit and vegetables at fraction of the price compared to chain grocery stores. They also stock rare fruit and vegetables and have their own line of freshly squeezed seasonal juices, dried fruit and nuts – not to mention that they offer delicious premade salads that are guaranteed to make the perfect side to your chops on a Sunday afternoon braai (another important weekend tradition). Dunkeld Fruit and Flowers is also a great option if you can’t face going to your normal grocery store. As implied in the name, they have a fantastic variety of fruit and an unbeatable selection of flowers. In fact, they’re one of the few places where you can get peonies in Jozi and at really reasonable prices too. 177 Beyers Naudé Drive, Northcliff K www.impalafruit.co.za E @impalafruitandveg 281 Jan Smuts Avenue, Dunkeld E @dunkeldfruitandflowers

Between work and home responsibilities, having time to go to the gym can feel like an impossible task. Luckily, there are so many great places to visit on the weekend, where you can enjoy a free workout! One of our favourites is Kloofendal Nature Reserve, which not only offers visitors a choice of great hiking paths but is also a fantastic spot to enjoy some peace and quiet in nature. If you’re lucky enough you might even be able spot some wildlife, including buck, dassies and a wide variety of birdlife. Another extremely popular way to get a weekend workout in, is by taking part in a Park Run. Almost every area has one and they’re completely free to join. Plus, it’s also a great way to meet people from your community. Just visit www. parkrun.co.za to find out which parks close to you participate. MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Braamfontein Spruit is one of the most popular mountain biking trails in the country. It’s a greenbelt in the middle of a city and is 60km long, but don’t worry – it’s an easy to moderate level trail. The trail starts in Melville Koppies AKA jacaranda central and runs all the way through to Paulshof. It also joins up with paths from various other points along the route, namely Albert’s Farm, Emmarentia, Delta Park, The Sandton Field and Study Centre in Parkmore, Sandton Field, Riverside and Bryanston Drive. For safety reasons, it’s recommended that you ride in groups of at least four.

A GHOST TOUR

The convenient thing about ghosts is that they tend to hang around old cities everywhere, including Jozi. The Mystery Ghost Bus tour starts near the Joburg Gen in Parktown at 7 pm, where you board a luxury bus. Based on the London Ghost Bus, the five-hour-long tour entertains with ghost, murder and mystery stories in the city. The tour offers something for everyone: pub stops to get you into the spirit (excuse the pun) with eerie storytelling at one of the pubs, meals, entertainment, the science of paranormal, live and dramatically recorded ghost stories, historical buildings and several off-the-busstops. It ends with a chilling climax in a graveyard – at midnight, of course! 1 www.mysteryghostbus.co.za

DANCING

Not at the club – we mean real dancing. Take a Cuban salsa class at Estilo Cubano, where they believe that dance isn’t just about moving your body to music, but about having an enriching and fulfilling experience. Group and private classes are available and whichever you choose, the environment is guaranteed to be nurturing and positive at all times. Otherwise, go somewhere with live music that makes you want to groove. The newly enlarged Katzy’s in fashionable Rosebank is a top choice – think resident bands, The Grillhouse’s menu, a stellar selection of wine, cocktails and cigars plus more than 100 different whiskeys, fine cognacs and bourbons. COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH by Thirst Bar Services Let’s be honest … strawberry and Campari go together like peanut butter and jam. So, this month we’re infusing these two flavours together in the deliciously spiced Strawberry Chai Negroni. All together, we have a masterpiece – it’s as simple as that. Now let’s get to that recipe!

SUMMER NIGHTLIFE HOTSPOTS

Altitude BEACH

THE TINY TIKI BAR

Whether you’re looking to grab afterwork drinks with coworkers or a spot for an early-game Tinder date, The Tiny Tiki Bar knows how to make the warm weather remain a breeze. Adjoining sister venue The Anti-Social Social Club, here you can look forward to a colourful, laidback atmosphere and kitsch cocktails, such as The Zombie made with a famous blend of four different rums and the Bahama Mama; an exotic blend of coconut, Kahlua and Sailor Jerry Rum. The next morning, go back to cure your hangover with a pancake stack with housemade miso and maple bacon. 10 7th Street, Melville m 071 774 5242

Making waves in Joburg’s party scene

L

ocated next to Fourways Mall is Altitude Beach club – one of the biggest and most exciting things to happen to Jozi’s party scene in a long, long time. The club, which opened in late 2019, has already garnered a reputation as one of the hottest spots in town and with its sparkling blue waters, state-of-the-art stage and DJ equipment as well as the sushi and oyster bar, it’s not hard to see why. This opulent venue is this city’s answer to the clubs that define destinations such as Ibiza and Dubai and can accommodate up to 1,500 guests. Although having an authentic looking beach club seems like an unlikely feat in Jozi given our distinct lack of beaches, Altitude truly excels in creating a tropical, Miami-esque paradise. It’s got palm trees and sun loungers but thankfully no beach sand, which is so overrated anyway.

HOTSPOT

THE HIDE OUT

The Hide Out is just the place to go if you’re staying at a backpacker in the inner-city. Not only because you should have plenty left to splurge on drinks seeing as you won’t be splashing out on a fancy pants bedroom, but also because you’ll meet fellow travellers and like-minded people over drinks like the Mojito Mint, Cranberry Daiquiri and Strawberry Bubblegum. Fun fat? The building the bar is inside used to be a secret printing press and hideout for anti-apartheid leaders, hence the name. Curiocity Backpackers, 302 Fox Street, Maboneng m 011 027 5257

Inspired by the international trend of daytime entertainment, Altitude opens its doors at 12h00 Wednesday through Sunday and offers guests the option of booking a luxurious day villa to spend the afternoon lounging in. However, it’s worth noting that these packages will cost you a pretty penny as they start at R8,000, but do include drinks, tapas and one extra-large pizza (all the makings of a good time if you ask us!). Other seating options include booking poolside day beds that cost R150 each or – if you’re feeling particularly spendy – VIP Lounges with packages starting at R13,500 and ranging all the way up to R36,000.

THE IMMIGRANT BAR

Brought to you by the same guys behind 86 Public and Republic of 94 and closely linked to the Once in Joburg ‘flashpackers’ hostel, you can bet that The Immigrant Bar is where the party’s at. Find on a seat on the two-tiered terrace that overlooks Braam’s busy Grove Square and get happy drunk on signature citrus-based jam jar cocktails. On the cocktail menu you’ll also find the likes of a Cinnamon Pear Mojito, Raspberry Grapefruit Rosemary Martini and Pineapple Breeze. Unfortunately, apart from the nachos, we wouldn’t recommend the food. 90 De Korte Street, Braamfontein m 061 443 0084

It may seem a bit pricey, but Altitude Beach is guaranteed to offer you an experience you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. So, if a lavish, Gatsby-style party is what you’ve been craving then make sure you add visiting this club to your to-do list. It is the ’20s after all! SHAKERS COCKTAIL BAR

You might recognise Shakers Cocktail Bar from most of Joburg’s markets a couple years ago. Its permanent location that takes form of an open-air cocktail bar in Maboneng’s quirky Maverick Corner only has a few tables available, but you won’t mind that once the salsa dancing starts. The cocktail menu includes all the warm-weather classics as well as cocktails served in teapots, buckets and jam jars, all garnished with fresh fruit and berries. Plus, their new kitchen serves up finger-licking gastropub meals like burgers, ribs and halloumi sticks. 300 Commissioner Street, Maboneng m 011 015 7111 Hello Joburg • March 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

THE MOST LEGENDARY BARS IN THE CITY

STREET BARS FOR BAR-HOPPING DOWNTOWN

THE COSMOPOLITAN HOTEL

THE ARTIVIST

Floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the street, a marble bar counter that takes centre stage and a mezzanine level to give patrons a view of the space makes The Artivist one of the trendiest new spots in town. It’s a celebration of art of all kinds, with chic grey walls that offset the art, soothing music that creates a unified bar atmosphere and the lingering aroma of ‘Afro-nomadic’ food. Even better yet, downstairs you’ll find Untitled Basement, a hidden gem that hosts musical events like We’ve Got The Jazz and What’s Wrong with Grooving 7 Reserve Street, Braamfontein m 011 339 1647

Want to get a taste of the back-in-time fun? The vintage glamour of The Cosmopolitan Hotel, a revamped heritage building that was once an Edwardian hotel, stems from the antique bar that’s as much a feature now as it was when the hotel was built in 1899. Known as Lion Bar in a former life, The Cosmopolitan Bar has been resurrected with its original lion-carved bar and some new giant red wingback chairs and serves liquor-loving food. Indulge in your inner high horse while sipping gin-laced cocktails or explore the treasures in the wine cellar downstairs, which boasts well-known vins like Fairview and Newton Johnson as well as small-stock delights, including De Morgenzon DMZ Maestro White and Raka Select Barrel Merlot. 24 Albrecht Street, Maboneng k zanele@hzrd.co.za K www.thecosmopolitan.joburg

MILK BAR

LENIN’S VODKA BAR

With traditional art, design and materials covering every visible surface, Milk Bar is just the place to visit for an immersive experience of the African aesthetic. A seat at the wooden bar of this colourful, airy drinkery lends a won’t-break-thebank taste of African extravagance, with bartenders stirring and shaking throwback potions ranging from the ginger beer-charged Mozambican Hurricane to the Pineapple Ginger Dawa, described as the ‘best medicine in Africa’. If the drinks are flowing too freely, nosh to your heart’s content on bar snacks like lamb meatballs, bobotie nachos and wet biltong. Don’t fill up if you’re planning to have a meal though – sustenance is nigh with enormous smashed cheeseburgers and pulled brisket bunny chows. 11 Holt Street East, Parkmore Maboneng m 087 701 2002 K www.milkbar.co.za

THE RADIUM BEERHALL

42

Journalists, hipsters and seasoned daytime drinkers have long favoured the city’s oldest surviving bar and grill. The Radium Beerhall is an icon for a reason – and if its walls could talk, things would get interesting. The old Joburg charm, which comes alive on the live jazz nights when the embossed tin ceiling vibrates in tune with the music, is as much of a draw as the cheap but reliable drinks, pizzas and burgers that circulate the floor on a daily and nightly basis. To get the most out of Radium, ditch the red-and-whiteclothed tables and perch yourself at the bar where you’ll find patrons watching sport and sipping on hard tack and Castle Light – often at the same time. 282 Louis Botha Avenue, Orange Grove m 011 728 3866 K www.theradium.co.za Hello Joburg • March 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

We doubt vodka is the answer, but it’s worth a shot at Lenin’s Vodka Bar on Maverick Corner. A stylish vodka bar with communist-inspired décor and sporting Russian symbolism with a large mural of Lenin on the wall, here you can choose from vodkas from 12 countries plus a basic menu of salads, flatbreads and burgers to nibble on. There are other varieties on offer too, with cocktails divided into different categories, namely The Russians, The Americans, Martinis, The Wild Bunch as well as Shots and Shooters. 300 Commissioner Street, Maboneng m 082 821 2863

THE LITTLE FOX

Fun fact about The Little Fox? The century-old warehouse that it’s housed inside in the quirky 1 Fox precinct lays claim to running the first telephone line in South Africa from the main gold mine and the Department of Mines in the 1890s. Headed by star mixologist Gareth Wainwright in partnership with Ginologist craft distillery, the menu at this on-trend cocktail bar also showcases other craft spirits like rum and mezcal – and the witty bartenders are always up for conjuring new creations on demand. 1 Fox Street, Ferreirasdorp K www.thelittlefox.co.za

LIVE like a local while TRAVELLING Let us introduce you to two diamonds on our doorstep We’re not sure what possesses Joburgers to travel offshore when we can take advantage of our own unique landscapes. It’s not just our country’s scenery that’s captivating, but its culture too. As you begin to meander through South Africa’s diverse paths, you’ll too realise why there’s no place like home. Sweetly put, local is always lekker! These are two top local picks for the month. MELVILLE’S MUSE - PABLO HOUSE

This mini breakaway is an absolute must-do for 20 plenty. Not only is this a truly rare hidden Jozi gem, it’s also beautifully designed with intricately architecture. Nestled in what seems like a treehouse, the seven suites are smartly intended to blend in casually with the evergreen environment. Cascading trees, palms and plants envelope the structure and with walkways down the Melville Mountain to make it feels as if you’re rooted deep in nature. It’s rustic and charming and has a calming and tranquil ambience. Each room has its own unique view and large windows maximize this, with gorgeous bathrooms fitted with a rain shower, Nespresso coffee machine, trendy Marshall speaker and UHD smart TV with Netflix and YouTube. And, yes, Pablo House has all-over Wi-Fi connectivity that actually works throughout! Suite 1 and 2 are both standard double rooms, suite 3 offers a deluxe double room and is more spacious, suite 4 and 5 are deluxe twin rooms and accommodate up to two guests each, suite 6 is a superior double room and

suite 8 is the crème de la crème where we recommend you book – this deluxe loft accommodates up to four guests and is a double story dream. There’s a kitchen and fridge, which allows for a self-catering option, as well as a beautiful dining room, self-contained workspace, lounge area and expansive bathroom. This self-contained oasis boasts its very own private terrace too, so you’ll have your very own little nook with a north- facing city view that could easily melt hearts (especially over sunset). Plus, throughout your stay you’ll be kept company by Jana Hamman and Pauline Gutter, whose artworks decorate the walls handsomely. You won’t want to miss the hotel’s pool and chill zone. Surrounded by rich and lush greenery, the pool is down at the bottom of the property and is molded around the existing environment with an unbelievable view of the Melville Koppies. When you’re basking in the sunshine on a lounger, you’ll feel as if you’re in a five-star resort in the bush. This fantastic slice of paradise is where we recommend you spend hours until your tummy starts to grumble – then visit the restaurant on site. Dos Manos offers hotel guests and regular Joburgers a private dining experience beneath the stars. While the sky is being painted rose gold, pink and sweet orange, order one of the famous cocktails: A gin sling, a lemongrass ginger mule or a kiwi martini should do the trick, accompanied with a flavour bomb of puff-puff pizza that’s all handmade and prepared on site. The simple menu also offers salads, Greek style lamb chops, chicken wings, panko prawns and delicious nachos with guac. It ticks all the taste buds – humble food that’s excellently priced and all created beautifully. The restaurant is open six days a week for lunch and dinner but for breakfast you’ll grab a tuk-tuk and head on over to sister eatery Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar. What you’ll remember: The exquisite depiction of local art celebrated all over the property. Gloat to friends about art by South African artists Richard Smith and Julian Venter and South African photographer Fausto Becatti.

THE KAROO’S CROWN JEWEL - NEW HOLME COUNTRY HOUSE If you’re looking for: An adventure outside your comfort zone to explore nature and all her raw beauty Transport required: Seven-hour self-drive from Joburg Pet-friendly: No but you’ll meet their rescue meerkat upon arrival The natural world is the focus in this location with stupendous caramel coloured desert landscapes, thirsty scenery, unparalleled beauty and small-town hospitality. This marvellously casual style accommodation is a member of Cape Country Routes portfolio (members compromise owner operated and managed accommodation and activity establishments). New Holme is situated in the mesmerising Karoo Gariep Nature Reserve alongside the Seekoei River and is completely secluded and tucked away far from civilisation.

Words Bianca Spinner Images Di Brown

Lapping up this this secret sanctuary is a fortuitous leap into a simpler life. Once you enter the nature reserve, over the dusty road there’s a diamond waiting to be discovered. There are five accommodation options to choose from, consisting of the Mieliefontein Karoo Guest Farm, Wolmade self-catering cottage, Stoffels Rus self-catering log cabin, Karoo Gariep tent and the incredibly extraordinary New Holme Karoo Guesthouse. Hands-on owners PC Ferreira and his wife Marisca have one secret ingredient to the success of this guest farm, and that’s that everything they’ve created radiates with love. Combining his outdoor talents and her culinary skills in the kitchen, this small country escape is impeccably brought to life. The comfortable, farm-style en-suite rooms are all individually decorated and have electric blankets, air-conditioning and tea and coffee stations. If you’re visiting in summer, be prepared for scorching sun-filled days, but you’ll be pleased to know there’s a gorgeous pool on the property. During your stay, activities include a Karoo ‘Shy 5’ Night Drive where you can see aardvark, aardwolf, black footed cat, porcupine and bat eared fox as well as daily birdwatching drives, sundowner trips to the hippo pool and an after-breakfast walk to see the Koi San etchings where PC regales stories on the history of the region. Our top pick when it comes to this nature reserve is the canoeing safari, which is offered by New Holme and run by mastermind PC and the Doornkloof Nature Reserve. To get there, you’ll pass through

80km of undulating mountainscapes dotted with kudu and warthog and thus begins your aquatic escapade. You’ll be demanded to relax, wind down and spend two days on the Gariep River (formerly known as the Orange River), canoeing and revolving around the untouched, unspoiled beauty. The trip’s drawcard is the colossal rocky gorges climaxing out of the aquamarine waters, which you’ll gently steer through. The WONDROUS WINE COUNTRY Exceptional dining experiences in the Cape Winelands – from Constantia to Stellenbosch to Franschhoek Yes, you can do the Cape Winelands in an afternoon, but with tutored tastings and farm-to-table dining along with breathtaking beauty, eye-catching architecture, magnificent gardens and serious art collections, it’s worth staying a few days. And did we mention the wine? It was tough to single out a handful, but these restaurants on wine farms are all at the top of their game. LA PETITE COLOMBE

HOME BASE With 18 elegantly furnished self-catering apartments with only the finest in fixtures, appliances and linen, The Den Apartments by Cape Summer Villas in Stellenbosch is right at home in a historic town known for its Cape Dutch architecture. We highly recommend booking one of the sophisticated open-plan studio apartments (two-bedrooms are also available) at Cape Summer Villas’ most recent addition to its boutique collection of properties in the Western Cape for your Winelands visit. Situated on the top level, they have absolutely everything you need: A flat-screen TV with DStv and Netflix, a fully equipped kitchenette, air-conditioning, complimentary uncapped fibre Internet, secure off-street undercover parking as well as access to the communal rooftop pool and braai area. More importantly, most of the wineries and restaurants you’ll want to visit are between 6km and 30km away, making Uber an affordable way to get around. Cape Town International Airport is also 30km away. 4 Dennesig Road, Stellenbosch m 066 297 4358 K www.capesummervillas.co.za k enquiries@thedenstellenbosch.co.za E @thedenstellies Q @thedenstellenbosch

Best for: Theatrical dining that fuses local ingredients with French flair The perfect pairing: Fine and Rare Wine Experience As part of the La Colombe group, little sister La Petite Colombe enjoys iconic status – a table must be reserved well in advance of arrival in the Winelands, especially in summer. The experience begins at the bar, where you’re served a refreshing sake-based cocktail with a zesty kalamansi foam inspired by head chef John Norris-Rogers’ recent trip to Japan. You’re then shown to your table in the relaxed yet refined glass-windowed dining room from which you can see the peeks of the Franschhoek mountains. The atmosphere is neither hushed nor stiff – instead, there’s a steady hum of animated conversation and glasses and cutlery are clinking enthusiastically. Each of the tasting menus can be ordered with wine pairings and unless you’re driving, the grand Chef ’s Experience paired with the Fine and Rare Wine Experience is definitely the way to go. First, snacks arrive in an enchanting mobile garden followed by a br ead course paired with a beer from Hey Joe Brewing Company down the road. From there, you can anticipate French-Asian inspired dishes with a depth of flavour on every plate and spot-on accurate pairings featuring limited-edition and boutique label wines. From the Malay tuna with avocado and coriander, to the scallop with pork, wild garlic, celeriac and katsuobushi, to the duck with langoustine, mussel and ham, each dish is more effortlessly balanced and downright delicious than the next. Ultimately, it’s all about the flavours. And don’t skip the cheese course of Boerenkaas, buckwheat and rhubarb before dessert. Take note: From early May, La Petite Colombe will move into a larger standalone space on Leeu Estates, also in Franschhoek. TERROIR Best for: Seasonal produce-driven cuisine and subtly nuanced wines The perfect pairing: Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Chenin Blanc 2013 Located on Kleine Zalze Wine Estate, a family owned wine farm that’s risen to prominence in both South Africa and internationally thanks to its award-winning chenin blanc and shiraz, Chef Michael Broughton’s Terroir restaurant is a regular fixture on our country’s top 10 lists for good reason. Refined bistro fare with a pronounced seasonal influence characterise the chalkboard menu of ‘deceptively simple’ dishes, such as the iconic prawn risotto and dessert soufflés. We recommend starting with the elegant and luxuriously creamy prawn risotto stirred with corn, basil, langoustine butter and sauce Americaine. Another top-notch option is the fresh yellowtail ceviche complemented by the sweetness of pickled vegetables, soy and mirin and the spiciness of ginger vinaigrette, which brings a perfect balance of flavours. Moving onto mains, the fillet of

beautifully cooked kob with plump, pillowy gnocchi, summer baby vegetables and velouté sauce makes for a decadent meal. Meat lovers may prefer the spectacular beef fillet with a rich mushroom purée, Pommes Anna, garlic chips and baby carrots. Your last course isn’t up for discussion – chef Michael’s chocolate crémeux with cinnamon, caramel corn and vanilla sherbet is one of the dreamiest desserts ever that will satisfy any cocoa lover. It’s comparable to a velvet-like creamy custard with an intense chocolate taste and sits atop a crumble base for fantastic texture. Once you’ve had your fill, you can work it off at the 18-hole De Zalze Golf Course designed by Peter Matkovich. TRYN

Best for: Oysters and bubbly overlooking verdant vineyards The perfect pairing: Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay MCC The Steenberg Farm outpost of new signature restaurant, Tryn is sheer magic to look at with drop-dead gorgeous views, from the tranquil outstretched terrace, of the entire Constantia Valley across False Bay to the distant mountains. Dedicated to Steenberg’s 17th century founder, Catharina Ras or Tryn as she was known to her nearest and dearest, the restaurant features solid timber and hardy stone, delicate layering of textured fabrics and wall effects as well as rich burnt orange and mustard tones in soft furnishings, which coats the space with her femininity with scatterings of her feisty character. But the fabulous food is even more magical than the setting, thanks to chef Kerry Kilpin’s inventive Asian and Middle Eastern-inflected menu. For starters, order a few of the oysters with a zesty lime, chilli, coriander and ponzu granite spooned over them followed by the tempura prawns with charred pineapple and peanut salsa, avo, black garlic oil, sriracha and lime – a boundary-pushing innovative dish that packs a hefty flavour punch rather than just looking pretty on the plate. For mains, both the ethically sourced fish with an aubergine parcel, butternut, coriander, harissa and rose petal as well as the lamb rack with pumpkin purée, shimeji, English spinach, onion petals and a lemon rosemary jus are sensory overloads that make for a memorable experience. Lastly, when you’re nearing capacity, dessert is a surprising yet delightful celebration of the infusion of some unexpected savoury notes such as basil, coriander, thyme and cardamom – a nod to Kerry’s clever use of flavours and textures.

REFUEL BETWEEN SIPS Perched high on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg in the oldest wine producing region of South Africa, the magnificent Constantia Glen is the place to grab local charcuterie and cheeses in Constantia. We recommend stopping by for the Constantia Glen Flagship Tasting, which includes four wines: The Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc, Constantia Glen TWO, Constantia Glen THREE and Constantia Glen FIVE. Our top pick is the fresh, classically styled sauvignon blanc, which combines tropical fruit flavours with well-integrated minerality. The tasting pairs well with the Charcuterie platter of prosciutto, coppa and Salami Felino with caper berries, gherkins, sourdough baguette and smoked rooibos butter or the Cheese & Charcuterie platter – a luxurious spread of fine cheeses and cured meats with sourdough baguette and homemade condiments

Life is too short to not have oysters and champagne sometimes, and gourmet glamour couldn’t come finer than at Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek. Here, you can truly indulge with the new Cap Classique & Oyster Pairing that includes three uniquely dressed oysters shucked directly from the wine estate’s oyster tank to complement the character and personality of Grande Provence Cap Classiques. The Grande Provence Brut Rosé, which bursts with red berry and strawberry, is paired with two different oysters: One enriched with pineapple and cucumber salsa and another enlivened with a sliced grape, soy and sesame glaze. In our opinion, the star of the show is the beautifully balanced Grande Provence Brut paired with an oyster bedecked with kimchi and sweet lemon mayonnaise and then sprinkled with toasted black and white sesame seeds.

TOKARA RESTAURANT

Best for: A feast followed by a stroll through fragrant olive groves The perfect pairing: Tokara Director’s Reserve White 2017 There’s a lot more growing in these fertile valleys than just plump grapes. Tokara Wine Estate’s olive oil is known to be as exceptional as its wine, so arrive an hour before lunch to fit in an olive oil tasting at Tokara Delicatessen first. During the tasting, you’ll get to sample the estate’s four cold-pressed extra virgin olive oils, from the delicately flavoured Mission to the spicy Frantoio, as well as its preserved Calamata olives and olive paste. Afterwards, you can stock up on olive oil products and cheeses. Then it’s time for lunch at Tokara Restaurant – with the estate being situated on the top of the scenic Helshoogte Pass, the restaurant offers breathtaking views over the valley below and Table Mountain. Chef Carolize Coetzee’s menu is South African with a hint of Europe – think lots of springbok and ostrich, but also pasta and seafood. We recommend the à la carte options, however, a four-course set

menu optionally paired with Tokara wines is also available at lunchtime. If you love shellfish and crave big, bold flavours, the steamed mussels with papaya, coconut, kapokbos, orange, samphire and a squid ink crisp is a must-order for starters. Also try the goat’s milk cheese ravioli with peas, green asparagus, lemon and velouté or the springbok loin with peach and apricot mebos, green beans, Pommes Anna and an apricot and buchu jus for mains. Desserts range from a hazelnut brownie to a coconut and vanilla panna cotta to a Spanish almond cake and are all superb. Of course, the wine list is extensive and carries only South African wines. CAVALLI RESTAURANT

Best for: A nighttime escape with glimpses of elegant racehorses The perfect pairing: Cavalli Black Beauty Shiraz 2014 You’ll be forgiven for mistaking Cavalli Restaurant for an art gallery with its polished copper details, blonde wood, palm swivel chairs, Italian designer lighting and behemoth glass panels showcasing views framed by the distant Helderberg mountains in every direction. A long drive from the main gate of wine and stud farm, Cavalli Estate is this starkly contemporary space that stands out amid its other Winelands peers thanks to its sleek eco-friendly architecture and cutting-edge design. Here, head chef Michael Deg turns out creative takes on classics: Free-range Oak Valley pork with a pulled pork and mushroom spring roll, sweet potato, bok choy, fennel, chilli jam and kimchi; grilled line-caught hake lightly cured in a Cape Malay curry sauce with a smoked snoek croquette, pickled mussels, apricots and raisin crème fraiche; or vegan pearl couscous ‘risotto’ with red pepper velouté, root vegetable brunoise, almond yoghurt, pickled naartjie and a kale crisp. Dining in this opulent environment from which you can see horses gambling in designer paddocks transports you to another era, where life was slower and unapologetically more decadent. Ahead of your meal, we suggest visiting the art gallery and doing a little wine tasting (try the Cavalli Pink Pony Grenache Rosé) in the subterranean wine tasting lounge, which has a slightly nightclub-y ambience. Afterwards, you simply must pop into the glamorous in-house boutique, Equus and splurge on items like Kretschmer womenswear, Ida Elsje jewellery, L’MAD scarves, Terre d’Afrique organic skincare products and Jeanne Laubser ceramics. HAUTE CABRIÈRE

Best for: That perfect Winelands lunch amid postcard-worthy scenery The perfect pairing: Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Pinot Noir When visiting Franschhoek, the epicurean epicentre of the Winelands, the hardest thing is deciding which world-class restaurants in a stunning natural setting to visit. The recently renovated Haute Cabrière is an epic destination for gourmands who love fine dining and should be at the top of your list. The drive up the picturesque Franschhoek Pass sets the tone for the arrival at this unpretentious wine farm with wraparound mountain views and majestic stone arches. Rolling lawns invite you toward the expansive infinity deck, which was built when the outdoor area was transformed and encapsulated in glass – the most notable change at Haute Cabrière. Now more of a destination than a traditional tasting room and restaurant, the light-filled space balances chic with relaxed while maintaining a timeless elegance. The menu is French inspired, but it’s the South African take on it that will have you enthralled. The chef ’s confident exploration of tastes, flavours, textures and cooking styles comes in the form of dishes like ricotta and garden spinach dumplings with courgette, cep mushroom, cheese and celeriac foam; curried lamb spring rolls with saffron and pear chutney, coconut-infused curry sauce, yoghurt and coriander; herb-crusted lamb rack with warm spelt and vegetable ragout, roasted aubergine, lemon jus, coriander, and mint and cumin yoghurt; and homemade tagliatelle with flash-fried prawns, chilli and garlic. Each course is a taste explosion that leaves you wanting more – just don’t forego the peanut butter, chocolate and caramel bar for dessert. NICOLE BESSICK What have been some of your career highlights so far? I have so many moments and memories that make the list, but I think the two achievements that I’m most proud of are my anti-bullying work and being crowned as the first female celebrity boxing champion on the continent as well as landing the role of Xenia Samuels on one of my favourite daily soaps, Binnelanders. Why is raising awareness around bullying something you’re passionate about? Any anti-bullying initiative is one that is so close to my heart. I was bullied at school – literally each and every day – for 12 years. So, as a victim of bullying myself, this cause is one that hits super close to home so raising awareness and trying to affect social change around antibullying is a must for me. You featured in Netflix’s Black Mirror and Investigation Discovery’s Killer Instinct. What were those experiences like for you? Those were absolutely incredible. What a learning experience! It’s always great to connect with artists from all corners of the globe. You’ve recently joined the cast of Binnelanders. Tell us about that journey. After I was sent the character brief and sides, I read them and felt an immediate connection to her. I went in for my audition and felt left feeling like I’d left my heart on the audition room floor. I prepared well and gave it the very best I could. A week after the call-backs, I was notified that I’d landed the role and the rest is history. Tell us about your character, Xenia Samuels. She’s a fierce, feisty, passionate woman who says what she means, and means what she says. As a teenager, she became addicted to drugs and blames her father for all her woes. She now works in a strip club, a world far removed from the conventional Christian home she was raised in. As a ‘functional junky’, she feels that her life is now her own and has no intention of going back to the oppression and judgement she felt at home. What have been the challenges of playing her? Playing such a daring character is always a bit touch-and-go, but I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response thus far.
