PUBLISHER’SLETTER Hello and Happy July to You, 50 W. Liberty St, Ste. 203, Reno NV 89501

I

PUBLISHER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

n this issue, please find several informative articles on topics that, as a whole, we revisit from time to time. New information warrants another look at how important Folic Acid, and Vitamin C therapies are to our overall health. Dr. Andy Drymalski gives us perspective and understanding into the psyche and personalities of people that hoard. Dr. Bob Eslinger presents an article on frequency healing — what is it? Carole Bucher writes an exposé on what a person goes through when they hear that dreaded diagnosis, “You have cancer.” These are must-read articles. Yes, it appears that summer seems to have finally arrived to our beautiful valley. We had a wild winter; Interstate 80 I believe was closed perhaps five times due to higher amounts of snowfall. It certainly made for inviting ski days and beautiful vistas; and, keeping true to the yin and yang of life, it also made a huge mess for travelers. Yet that is typically life. The only perfection we can attain is keeping our hearts open to the joy and beauty that is everywhere — even in a dung heap, a flower can grow. Now we turn our sights to summer issues, like the pesky bunny that has massacred my petunias twice already this season. I am at my wits end with this very cute-yet-destructive opponent. I welcome any tips and suggestions that readers have on how to peacefully get rid of, or, live harmoniously with my nemesis, Mr. Peter Rabbit. Please enjoy the wonderful watermelon recipe provided in support of our cover image. Watermelons provide a refreshing burst of hydration, lots of water, and a bit of sweetness all in one. Please send in your favorite healthy summer recipes! We would love to publish them. It is my hope that you all take the time to travel this summer and see what the United States’ diverse and beautiful geography has to offer in the way of national and state parks. For me, nature has been divinely inspired. Its beauty never ceases to amaze me. Let me close with a reading from Melody Beattie’s book, The Language of Letting Go. “Today, I will do something just for fun. I will practice having fun until I actually enjoy it.” HB Make it a balanced, healthy, and happy month, Dawn Gowery

PROVIDERPROFILE CLAUDINE JOHNSON, LMT, REIKI MASTER PRACTITIONER

C

By Angela Black

laudine Johnson decided to leave the corporate world behind, after 35 years. A Reno native, Claudine and her husband had successfully raised their five children while she simultaneously worked in many aspects of the corporate world. A few years ago, when word got out that the corporation where she was employed was closing its doors for good, she decided it was “the right time to take the leap” and change the course of her life to follow her passion: Holistic Wellness. Claudine had suffered from chronic pain since childhood due to Scoliosis, and other chronic conditions later in life, including a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Disease. Seeking relief, she enlisted the help of her aunt, who worked with Claudine for over 20 years, practicing Emotional Freedom Technique Tapping (EFT). This, along with treatment from different holistic modalities, helped Claudine find wellness, finally living a life free from painkillers. She knew she wanted to pay it forward, and thus, started on her mission — helping people feel better, one session at a time. She first earned her Reiki Level 1 and Energy Boundaries certifications from HCH Institute in 2016; Claudine then studied under Teresa Aramini at Reno Tahoe Reiki, to ultimately become a Holy Fire Reiki Master Practitioner in 2018. “When you become a Reiki Master, it definitely changes your life, in so many beautiful ways. I’m so grateful for Reiki on so many levels.” Continuing her studies, she became a licensed Massage Therapist, receiving her certification in 2018 from the Milan Institute in Reno-Sparks. Claudine also obtained her Cupping Massage certification from ICTA, and her Aromatouch certification from DoTerra in early 2019. After earning her certifications in these many modalities, Claudine founded July 2019

Machi’s Holistic Wellness in Reno, in January of this year. “Machi” (pronounced, MAH-chee) is short for “Amachi,” which is Basque, for Grandmother. “My granddaughter couldn’t say Amachi, so she’d say Mach, or Machi, and I liked it; it just kind of stuck. The name honors my heritage and encompasses the kind of overall maternal healing I offer my clients.” Machi’s Holistic Wellness offers a number of holistic modalities, including Reiki, Massage Therapy (Therapeutic; Swedish; Deep Tissue; Sports; Prenatal), Aromatouch (Essential Oils) Therapy, Cupping, Manual Lymphatic Drain Therapy, Biomagnetic Therapy, and the newly added Biomodulator/Biotransducer (Voltage) Therapy. Machi’s flagship treatment session— called the Integrative Holistic Massage— is a customized blend of the modalities listed above, along with Reflexology, Myofascial Release, and Trigger Point Therapy. All sessions include essential oils (ask about Machi’s Awesome Sauce custom blend!), and come with a heated table enhancement, and complimentary hot towels. When I had the pleasure of meeting Claudine — Machi herself — I found her entire

vibe to be fresh, upbeat, driven, qualified, grounded, and centered. I could just feel the excitement bubbling over — she has truly found her niche. Give Miss Claudine a call, and find yourself in the healing hands of Machi. Machi’s Holistic Wellness has very competitive rates, including discounts for seniors and veterans, as well as for UNR faculty and students. Loyal customer and referral incentives are available as well. Give yourself or a loved one the gift of healing, with the beautiful experience of a healing session at Machi’s Holistic Wellness. Healing with Frequencies By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

I

n the 1920’s and 30’s, a Russian engineer named Georges Lakhovsky developed a way to heal the body by exposing it to a multitude of electronic frequencies.

of the oscillations of the cells, this increase would overwhelm and dampen the oscillations produced by the diseased cells, and restore them to health.

His discovery was that every one of our cells (estimated at tens of trillions in number) has its own “resonant frequency.”

Lakhovsky viewed the progression of disease as essentially a battle between the resonant oscillations of host cells versus the oscillations emanating from pathogenic organisms.

If the cells get exposed to frequencies that are exactly the same as that produced by the cell, the strength and vigor of that cell will be reinforced and become stronger.

He initially proved his theory using plants (geraniums), by inoculating them with a type of plant cancer that was known to be able to be passed from one plant to another by inoculation.

If, on the other hand, these outside frequencies are slightly different, rather than strengthen the cells, they might dampen or weaken them.

After he identified all of the inoculated plants growing tumors, he separated them into two groups. One group was set aside and had no treatment. The other group was treated with an electronic machine that he built, called the Multi-Wave Oscillator.

The cells of disease-causing organisms within an infected person produce different frequencies than that of normal, healthy cells, and it weakens them. Lakhovsky called this condition, “Oscillatory Disequilibrium.”

On all the treated plants, the tumors dried up and fell off, and the plants prospered. All the untreated plants died.

For people suffering from disease conditions, Lakhovsky found that if he could increase the amplitude (but not the frequency)

He repeated this experiment many times. The results were always the same. One hundred percent of the plants were cured of cancer! He ultimately set up this equipment in many hospitals throughout France, Germany, and Italy, and treated many people for many different diseases. The records show a high degree of success at curing them. He had lived in Paris and unfortunately had to flee to New York in 1939 when the Nazis invaded France. He started doing his work there and his Multi-Wave Oscillators started appearing in hospitals around New York.

Please see ad on inside cover, page 2

The records show that he had the same degree of success at treating disease in this country as he had in Europe.

Unfortunately, he was killed in 1942, in a very suspicious hit and run car accident that was never solved. His equipment started disappearing from the hospitals and knowledge of his work faded. Interestingly, no contra-indications or harmful effects have ever been noted from the use of his equipment.

Fortunately for us, a few places in the world kept the memory of his work (and some of his equipment) alive. His MultiWave Oscillator can still be purchased from a few different companies that custom build them based on some original machines that they back-engineered. HB

HOARDING:

A Jungian Perspective By Andy Drymalski, Ed.D.

T

o my knowledge, Carl Jung never directly addressed the topic of hoarding. However, the following paragraph (in italics), which I have divided into parts in order to provide commentary, offers some thoughts relevant to the subject. [I suggest that the italicized text be read as a whole first before then going back to re-read the text along with the commentary.] The personality is seldom, in the beginning, what it will be later on. For this reason, the possibility of enlarging it exists, at least during the first half of life. The enlargement may be effected through an accretion from without, by new vital contents finding their way into the personality from outside and being assimilated. In this way a considerable increase of personality may be experienced. Like the body, the personality is capable of rapid growth during the first twenty years of life. Much of that growth occurs through observation and modeling of others, through formal and informal education. The development of inherent potentials and abilities

allows the individual to move through the world in an effective and creative way, and establishes a healthy foundation for further personality growth.

people have an intuitive sense that there is something important that they are meant to glean from this life — important lessons, or some enlargement of consciousness.

We therefore tend to assume that this increase comes only from without, thus justifying the prejudice that one becomes a personality by stuffing into oneself as much as possible from outside.

But the struggle or difficulty in determining what is truly valuable implies an equal difficulty in discerning what is really junk and without lasting value. In this respect, people who hoard are far from unique. In fact, hoarding is a graphic symptom of a society that is generally confused about what is of real value in life. We are a society that chases after experiences in the hopes that somewhere in all those experiences something valuable will be collected. Unfortunately, we lack the inner depth and consciousness to assign proper value to the events, relationships, and opportunities that we encounter. Perhaps, rather than sensationalizing the behavior of people who hoard, we should be thanking them for holding up a mirror to our own collective tendency to cram our lives full of ideas, information, activities, and experiences that neither enrich nor deepen our soul, the latter being the key task that makes life worthwhile and grows the personality. HB

Due to the nature of our early learning we may view our growth as coming primarily through schooling, books, things we are told, and other outer life experiences. We may associate personality growth with the intellect, the acquisition of “facts,” and the assimilation of the established, collective worldview. But the more assiduously we follow this recipe, and the more stubbornly we believe that all increase has to come from without, the greater becomes our inner poverty. Real growth of the personality involves a reflective, deeper processing of the events and lessons that come your way in life. It means coming to know yourself—both the light and the dark—and by knowing yourself, coming to know the world and other people as they really are, rather than what you project them to be. Your mind may be full of “facts,” and your life full of experiences, but they all mean very little if you have not gained insight into your own nature and grown in inner consciousness and servanthood through them.

Therefore, if some great idea takes hold of us from outside, we must understand that it takes hold of us only because something in us responds to it and goes out to meet it. Richness of mind consists in mental receptivity, not in the accumulation of possessions. What comes to us from outside, and, for that matter, everything that rises up from within, can only be made our own if we are capable of an inner amplitude equal to that of the incoming content.

A powerful work of art or an inspirational idea may deeply touch and provide an “Aha! Moment” for one individual, but be totally missed or unvalued by another. It is one thing to read a book on ethics; it is quite another to actually embody in word and deed an ethical standpoint. To be mentally receptive to an idea or perspective implies a depth of consciousness that can assimilate, take in and actually digest, utilize, and build upon the idea or experience presented. Real increase of personality means consciousness of an enlargement that flows from inner sources. Without psychic depth we can never be adequately related to the magnitude of our object. It has therefore been said quite truly that a man[woman] grows with the greatness of his[her] task. [C.G. Jung, C.W. Vol. 9, I, para. 215] Recent research on hoarding suggests that people who hoard have a difficult time distinguishing between the relative value of things, so they save everything. Each saved object might sometime come in handy, or might cause regret if given away and later sought. Therefore, it is retained. In addition, most

Stem Cells, Exosomes, and a Degenerated Hip, Oh My! By Dr. William Clearfield, D.O.

T

his hip,” a distressed Linda Z. said, pointing right, “I broke it ice skating when I was 13.” “Did you have it replaced?” I asked. “No. Too young they told me. I can barely stand anymore. Now I’m 68, they want to replace it.” “Surgeons got to surgery,” I said. “Not me,” she said, “I can’t sit around all day and do nothing,” she replied. “I was a horsewoman. Had to give it up. Heck, I can barely get out of this seat. So, I took up Latin wheelchair dance.” “There’s Latin wheelchair dancing?” I asked. Linda shot me an are you for real look.“ I came in fourth in the 2013 Latin Division of International Paralympic Wheelchair Dance Sport Continents Cup,” she said. “Would have been higher, but I snapped a lug in doing the Cha-Cha.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’re the best, Doc. What is it?” “I have just one word for you, Linda: Exosomes.” “Exoso..who?” she asked. “Exosomes,” I replied. “Tiny messengers. think of Captain Kirk from Star Trek in an escape pod leaving the USS Enterprise and traveling to an alien planet, delivering life-altering supplies — in the case of exosomes, DNA, RNA, and proteins to other cells, changing the function and genetic composition of the receiving cells.2-3 “Sounds like stem cells,” Linda said. “Close. Exosomes descend from stem cells,” I replied. “The issue with stem cells is they contain inflammatory proteins and donor genetic material that can cause rejection and allergic reactions. Exosomes are filtered for any rejection of potential material.

“Exercise, weight loss, acupuncture, soaking in mineral hot springs, electrical stimulation.”

“We inject them directly into your hip. The growth factors in exosomes replace your injured tissue with growth factors, activating stem cells wherever they are infused. For even better results we mix them with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate blood flow, protect against stress-induced toxins, and programmed cell death. The exosomes are directly antiinflammatory and secrete immune and antimicrobial proteins.“

“Check, check, and check.”

“So, let’s do it,” she said.

“Medication, cortisone shots, nerve blocks, the “rooster comb,” hyaluronic acid shots.” “Yes, yes and yes,” Linda said. “I’ve even done reiki, chakra balancing, yoga, and meditation. There’s got to be something out there before they cut me open.”1

On April 23, 2019, Linda’s partner and I lifted her from her wheelchair to the treatment table. Forty-five minutes later, following an exosome and PRP injection into her hip along with an intravenous push for a “global” effect, she asked, “Did you do anything? I barely felt it.”

“Well…,” I said. “You know we pride ourselves on being the cutting edge...?”

Linda got off the treatment table herself and, albeit with a slight limp, walked to her car.

“Amazing,” I said. “Back to your hip. So, we’ve done all the usual things. Heat and ice?” “Yes.”

That night, I received a call. “For the first time in four years, I fed the horses myself without help and without sitting down,” she said. The next night, with the pain in her hip and back significantly reduced, Linda had a full night’s sleep for the first time in “at least 10 years.” Six weeks post-injection Linda stopped by the office. “The exosomes are awesome,” she said. “They’ve changed my life. I don’t feel like I am crippled up anymore. I feel better and am walking better than I have in years. I had given up hope of regaining mobility unless I looked at surgery. Now I don’t need it.” Obviously, this is an anecdotal narrative. A “real doctorscientist” would scoff at Linda’s tale as being a one-off. Peerreviewed evidence research is necessary to make exosome therapy “traditional” versus “experimental.” A survey of 19 such medical journals reveals that an 84% rate of all exosome literature is less than three years old. We wanted to share Linda’s adventure to highlight what’s possible in the now and what the future holds. I hope you join us for the ride. HB

VITAMIN King of Nutrients

By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD Practitioner of Homeopathic Medicine

W

e Are All Suffering from Sub Clinical Scurvy

Man lost the ability to synthesize Vitamin C in the distant past. All animals make Vitamin C except primates, Guinea pigs, fruit bats, and man. A goat that weighs 150 pounds makes 15,000 to 20,000 mg Vitamin C per day, and more when they are under stress. We don’t make any. The Recommended Daily Allowance for humans is 90 mg per day, a wartime level determined to keep us from the most severe symptoms of scurvy, which include weakness, bleeding sores, tooth loss, anemia, bruising, slow healing of injuries, pain in the limbs (especially legs), ulcerations of gums, shortness of breath, mood changes, depression, and eventually death. Scurvy has been observed in medical writings since ancient times. People living in northern latitudes experienced scurvy in spring when they ran out of fresh foods as did sailors in the 15th century on long voyages. Vasco de Gama, the Portuguese explorer, set off in 1492 to go around the world with three vessels and 1,500 sailors. He returned three years later with one ship and 50 sailors. All the rest had died of scurvy. One glass of orange juice has 100 mg of Vitamin C and cannot meet the needs of most people especially if they are suffering chronic infections, vascular disease, or cancer. Liposomal Vitamin C, encased in a lecithin jacket, is three times better absorbed than powdered ascorbic acid and is almost as strong as an IV of Vitamin C. POLIO Fredrick Klenner, MD, cured 60 out of 60 children with polio in the late 1940s before the advent of the polio vaccine1. Even children with early stages of bulbar polio were healed using intramuscular and intravenous Vitamin C.

SEPSIS Dr. Alpha Fowler, MD, head of Intensive Care Medicine at the Commonwealth of Virginia School of Medicine published his findings; and by giving only 12-14,000 mg intravenously around the clock he dropped the mortality rate of sepsis by 40%. Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in hospitals. You can’t get a high-dose Vitamin C IV in American Hospitals. An end-stage Swine flu patient in New Zealand, family was recommended by the University Medical staff to take him off life support. The family called Thomas Levy, MD, JD, a cardiologist who recommended giving an IV of Vitamin C at 100 grams per day2. The hospital refused and the family threatened to sue. The medical staff complied and started with 25 grams of IVC per day and within three days he was off the respirator, and at 100 grams of IVC he returned to his local hospital where all the drama was repeated. After six weeks he had completed his physical therapy and went back to work totally healed. I think this is still up on YouTube, including X-rays of his lungs. COLLAGEN FORMATION Collagen formation is totally dependent on Vitamin C. It is necessary to make ligaments, bones, and arteries. Without enough Vitamin C, arteries lose their strength, the body then inserts calcium and plaque to repair the damage. This then leads to cardiovascular disease. IMMUNE ENHANCEMENT Vitamin C has immune enhancement, anti-inflammatory, and anti-clotting properties. It is vital in the production of interferons, phagocytes, macrophages, natural killer cells, T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, and inhibits neuraminidase production.

CANCER TREATMENT WITH VITAMIN C Vitamin C inhibits both tumor growth and the spread of cancer. It protects healthy cells while simultaneously and selectively causing rapid cell death in cancer cells. Cancer cells accumulate high levels of free iron. Vitamin C reacts with the iron to produce peroxide which kills the cancer cells that have poor antioxidant protection ability. Although oncologists worry that the antioxidant properties of Vitamin C will interfere with the oxidizing properties of some chemotherapeutic drugs, simply waiting for the half-life of the chemo agent to run and then giving

the IV Vitamin C will reduce side effects and give its own anti-cancer effects. THE MANY AMAZING POSITIVE EFFECTS OF VITAMIN C There are more than 50,000 positive studies on Vitamin C2. It is valuable to prevent and treat osteoporosis, all viral diseases, acute poisoning from chemicals, mercury, alcohol, the common cold, measles3, encephalitis, and much more. IV Corner:

The Folic Acid/ Folate Frenzy By Melvin Ibarra Nario, M.D., H.M.D.

F

olic acid (aka Vitamin B9) is one of the usual vitamins in our “must have” list of supplements, and commonly partnered with Vitamin B12 (the cobalamins). It is a water-soluble vitamin that comes in its solo form, or part of a Vitamin B complex. Folic acid is routinely given as an important supplement during pregnancy to promote the normal brain and spinal formation of the growing fetus. Are these the only significant functions of folic acid or is there more to know behind this useful vitamin? Let us get to know Vitamin B9 a little bit more. The difference between folate and folic acid: the majority of folate is found in plant sources and is readily available for absorption. On the other hand, folic acid is a synthetically manufactured substance, found in supplements and fortified foods. Dark green leafy vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and spinach, are good sources of folate; when these vegetables are overcooked, the folate content is diminished, due to the excessive heat exposure.

Methyl folate (an absorbable form of folate) specifically was studied to be vital to the nervous system at all ages due to its part in numerous brain methylation reactions. The effects on mood, arousal, cognitive, and social function using replacement therapy with folic acid and methyl folate had been proven to be effective in open and controlled trials. In women of reproductive age, a minimum of 400 mcg per day is recommended. Among pregnant women, folic acid intake should be increased (a minimum of 600 mcg per day), especially during the first four weeks of conception to prevent congenital deformities of the brain or spine in the fetus, and to prevent premature birth. To lower the risk of these abnormalities, it is highly recommended that women planning to get pregnant take folic acid supplementation for at least a year before conceiving. During breastfeeding, a minimum of 500 mcg per day is sufficient as maintenance dose. If you are deficient, you may manifest any of these symptoms:

Folic Acid is vital in many aspects:

Fatigue

1.

It is key in making DNA and RNA as well as their repair

Mouth sores

2.

Production of more red blood cells in our circulation

Memory and cognition impairment

3.

Prevention of age-related hearing loss

Irritability

4.

Preserving the brain health of infants

Loss of appetite and weight

Other health problems related to folic acid deficiency may lead to a higher risk of developing anemia, depression, allergies, and a lower bone density. Anemia is one of the more important complications of deficiency where there is improper production and maintenance of red blood cells. The red cells may appear larger than normal and pale which is correlated to their inability to deliver a healthy level of oxygen to supply the body. Methotrexate is a medication used in chemotherapy, and as treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. This depletes folate stores in the body. Supplementation is vitally necessary while on this medication to reduce its harmful side effects. Deficiency can occur in conditions that require higher quantities of folate, but are not adequately supplemented. Examples would be during pregnancy and lactation, sickle cell anemia, alcohol abuse, kidney disease, and, during the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Since the food industry started fortifying some of their products with folic acid, deficiency has dropped significantly nationwide. Chances of folic acid overdose are very minimal due to the fact that it is water-soluble, and any excess will be naturally passed through the urine.

necessary to meet our daily requirements. Oral supplementation is the most convenient and accessible form, but is absorptionchallenged due to the gut barrier. A more effective way of delivery is through injections (either intramuscular or intravenous); since, this bypasses the gastrointestinal tract, ensuring 100% delivery into our system. HB

The Importance of

BODY AWARENESS and SKELETAL STRENGTH

in Your Recovery From Cancer By Carole Bucher, BA, GCFP, Reno Feldenkrais Integrative Movement

W

hen coming to grips with cancer, one needs every available source of support. Just hearing the words, “It may be cancer,” is enough to send most of us into the worst kind of flight, fight, or freeze mode (think absolutely crazed fear) on a massive, relentless scale. This response drains the human body and brain of its capacity to focus and to relate outwardly– in other words, it robs us of qualities that make us able to live comfortably and efficiently in the world we used to occupy. We may not have moved to a new geographical location, but something in our own world is drastically different. Add in the nightmare-ish images of conventional chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, and one ends up barely hanging onto the threads of the weakest part of the physical and mental health spectrum. It is hard for anyone who hasn’t experienced this to grasp how debilitating, threatening, and traumatic it actually is. Learning about non-conventional cancer treatment options is tough to do. There are scams and misinformation; many modalities are considered “quackery.” One resource considered reputable by many people is Ty Bollinger, whose material (The Truth About Cancer, or TTAC) is available online and at most libraries. In Reno, there are a few experienced MDs, DOs, and HMDs who treat cancer using alternative and hybrid (toned down conventional + alternative) methodologies. You can also find them online. Whatever type of treatment one chooses to pursue, one hopefully returns to some semblance of normalcy and improved health, post-treatment. One’s feeling of health, however, can be forever scarred and incomplete. The intense fear-factor around the possible return of cancer is a terrifying sword hanging over the heads of all cancer survivors. Fortunately, there are support groups in most hospitals, as well as ad hoc groups locally and online, that provide community, family, and individual support,

including emotional, physical, and many other kinds of help. “Survivors” have a platform to share about their difficulties, triumphs, and issues concerning loved ones, jobs, feelings of self, etc. — all those complex human vehicles that produce learning and growth. But there is still more that is needed. In the vast majority of post-cancer programs, what is missing is an effective way to help the vulnerable and traumatized individual return more quickly into their body in a powerful, sustainable way; a way that will teach cancer survivors–people who have been to hell and back, and who feel betrayed by their bodies, or by nature, or by the luck of the draw–how to find a new resource for physical, mental, and emotional strength; a way to restore a sense of vitality and possibility that one cannot obtain by any other means. Cancer survivors need to re-learn to trust what they feel, to be able to find their body in space, to sense its shape and stability, recovering alignment and balance; this is done by finding new ways of movement that are appropriate, efficient, comfortable, safe, and strong. And it is a big thing. Life gets better when this happens.

Oddly, most cancer doctors and cancer support groups are not aware that such a teaching exists, nor have they been taught the relevance and importance of skeletal stability in cancer recovery. Fewer still have heard of the trained and certified somatic teachers who can do this (e.g., The Feldenkrais Method®; Anat Baniel Method®, Neuromovement®). Such classes teach, in a clear and concrete way, how to tap into the positive support residing in the skeletal structure of one’s body, to improve its movement, alignment, and to find better balance. The restoration of these deep connections can turn around even the blackest feelings of dread, impotence, selfdoubt, or sense of lack–which stand in the way of one’s ability to regain forward momentum in life.

Restore Alignment, Flexibility, Balance and Grace in your entire body with

The Feldenkrais Method®

The process involves self-sensing and body scanning; then, gentle, mindful movement sequences, done with attention, as one rediscovers the shape, weight, and mass of the body; learning new ways of moving, breathing, walking, and living with greater ease and grace. Our skeleton is a beautifully designed structure, full of surprises. When it is well-aligned and well-organized, it opposes gravity easily, produces pleasant, comfortable movement that relieves pain, and delivers a feeling of grace — no matter what we’ve been through. One learns to appreciate one’s body as the truly marvelous instrument it is. This brings us light and love and trust once more, and a much better quality of feeling toward oneself. There are no greater gifts than these. HB

KEEPING A HEALTHY WATCH

On Our Kids

By Tony C. Jensen, D.C.

D

o kids really need healthcare? What is appropriate healthcare for kids? What can you do in your everyday life to assist in your child’s overall health? An alarming cry for help is coming from our children, because many of their “hidden” healthcare needs are being ignored. Recently, Dr. David Katz of Yale University School of Public Health expressed that, for the first time, we are living in a generation where parents will outlive their children… a frightening wake-up call for society as a whole. We are being commissioned to improve the quality of healthcare for our children. But how do we begin? FIRST: Develop a PARTNERSHIP with your child’s healthcare provider early on in your child’s life. Commit to “well” visits and educate yourself on the things that your child needs to stay active, healthy, and well. SECOND: Introduce EXERCISE into your child’s daily activities, i.e., running, playing hard, and walking. Current studies reveal that today’s children are not getting sufficient exercise at school. Their after school “activity” often consists of playing video games, watching television, or sitting for long periods of time in front of the computer. Exercise is the key to the formation of healthy bones and strong muscular structure. Surprisingly, studies found that children from four to six, who have high

Visit HBmag.com

motion and physical activity levels, have hip bone density 12 percent higher than inactive children. THIRD: Parents should closely monitor the EATING habits of their children. Proper diet and nutrition are necessary in maintaining optimum health. Kids have a higher metabolism and “turn over rate of repair;” therefore, it is essential to build their bodies with good, wholesome foods. Mentor your child with proper nutritional information, encouraging him/her to choose fresh, wholesome foods, as opposed to processed, fast, and packaged foods. FOURTH: Encourage WATER to become your child’s “beverage of choice.” Water affects the cooling system, stimulates brain activity, promotes healthier skin and aids in maintaining a normal blood pressure range. A good rule of thumb to follow is: daily water intake should be a ½ the body’s weight in ounces. In other words, a 100-pound child should consume 50 oz. of water daily. FIFTH: The NERVOUS SYSTEM is one of the most overlooked aspects of a child’s overall health. Studies conclude that 80 percent of all births can result in Nerve Impingement Syndrome (NIS), which is interference in the communication between the brain and the body. Research conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) indicates that 40

percent of all children will fall on their heads by one year of age, and on the average, children between two to five years of age will experience over 200 falls. By 12 years, a child will experience over 1,000 spinal traumas. Whether through the birthing process, sporting activities, falling, or simply playing, children can experience NIS. A chiropractor can examine your child and determine the health of his/her nervous system. For parents, grandparents, and caregivers, this is a call-to-action. We are asked to be watchful of the “hidden” healthcare problems of our children. Remember, it is better to fix health problems early on in life, than trying to repair a bigger problem later on. By creating a partnership with our child(ren)’s healthcare providers and teaching our children healthful habits, we are HB giving them a better chance of living a long and healthy life......

Crystology:

Ruby, Queen of Gems

By Allison Prater

R

uby is one of four in the quartet of “precious” gemstones, which also includes, Diamond, Emerald, and Sapphire. Its hardness is second only to Diamond and it is prized for its beautiful deep red color. Ruby’s red color is thanks to red Corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral with chromium. Named from the Latin word Rubeus, or red, it was not until 1800 that Ruby was discovered to be a variety of Corundum. Before this time red Spinels, Tourmalines, and Garnets were also believed to be Ruby. Ruby has long been revered by many cultures throughout history as a talisman to promote prosperity, passion, and protection. It is considered to be the most perfect offering to Lord Krishna in India, and to the Buddha in China. There is a Burmese Legend that says that embedding a Ruby into one’s flesh will make the wearer completely invincible. There are legends that dreaming of Rubies is an omen of prosperity to come, and if the dreamer is a farmer, a bountiful harvest. Ruby is a projective stone associated with the element of fire. It vibrates a frequency that is stimulating to the root or base Chakra. Located at the base of the spine, this chakra center controls the body’s capacity for energy, kinesthetic feeling, and movement. This is the center of our survival instincts and sense of feeling safe in the world as well. When this chakra is out of balance, one will experience lethargy, low enthusiasm, and a general feeling of being distant or even disconnected from reality. Working with Ruby can help to rebalance this Chakra, inviting the body to regain its strength and vitality as well as for individuals to develop a deeper sense of their own strength.

Used for protective purposes, Ruby is said to strengthen the body’s psychic defense system when worn. Touching a Ruby to the four corners of one’s house or garden is said to protect one’s property from the effects of storms. Placing a Ruby under one’s pillow ensures restful sleep and protects against nightmares. Wearing or keeping Rubies is said to be wealth expanding. In 13th century magic, Rubies with the engraving of either a snake or a dragon were thought to be particularly effective for increasing wealth. Magical lore from Ancient India states that the mere possession of Ruby helps the owner to acquire other precious gems. While gemstone-quality Ruby can be price prohibitive, nongem quality Rubies can be acquired at a fraction of the cost. Other red stones such as Garnet and Red Tourmaline can be used as substitutions in ritual work as well. HB

Ruby is thought to be so energizing that it is not suited for quiet, reflective spiritual practices such as meditation. Highly sensitive individuals may find this stone to be too overstimulating when worn for extended periods of time. Ruby’s energy-enhancing properties are no doubt the reason it is considered to be an aphrodisiac. It is a stone that is said to enhance the bond between partners, restoring and maintaining passion. Some say it enhances the chances of conception and is worn to assist in resolving reproductive health issues in both women and men.

PNEUMA NITRIC OXIDE ACTIVATING SKIN SERUM By Nathan S. Bryan, Ph.D., Advertorial

T

he power of nitric oxide has recently been introduced into the beauty and cosmetic industry. Pneuma Nitric Oxide Activating Skin Serum is a revolutionary, innovative and patent pending dual chamber technology that delivers nitric oxide gas to the surface of the skin. Developed by renowned nitric oxide researcher and inventor Dr. Nathan S. Bryan, Pneuma Nitric Oxide delivers what no other product on the market has been able to do, generate nitric oxide and improve the tone, texture, and complexion using natural physiological processes, rather than harsh chemicals and/or synthetic compounds.

Activating Skin Serum is critical. When the contents of both chambers are mixed together, it generates the nitric oxide molecule instantaneously. The nitric oxide can be detected and quantified. Nitric oxide is a gas that not only diffuses off the surface of the skin for detection but also diffuses into the outer layers of the skin and into the dermis to increase oxygen and nutrient delivery to the cells of the dermis and surface of the skin. It is remarkable because you can actually see it working. You can see the skin turn a light pink indicating that the nitric oxide that is delivered through the serum is actually working on the skin.

Nitric oxide is a molecule naturally produced in the body. In fact, it may be one of the most important molecules produced in the human body. Nitric oxide (NO) is a cell-signaling molecule that tells blood vessels to open up to improve oxygen and nutrient delivery to every cell in the body, including the cells of the dermis of the skin. Research has shown that we lose nitric oxide as we age and it is the loss of nitric oxide production that leads to signs of advanced aging, including poor complexion, cellular dehydration, fine lines, and wrinkles. After all, cells cannot do their job if they do not have the oxygen and nutrients they need to perform, and this is reflected by the outward appearance of the skin. Scientifically, in the aging population, they have lost the ability to naturally produce nitric oxide within their own cells due to a number of reasons, including poor diet, smoking, exposure to toxic chemicals in cleansers and make up, and exposure to free radicals in the air. Therefore, if your body cannot make nitric oxide naturally, then you must get it from somewhere else. That is where Pneuma Nitric Oxide

Pneuma Nitric Oxide Activating Skin Serum also contains 20% Vitamin C that works synergistically with nitric oxide to help neutralize harmful free radicals and provide anti-oxidant support to the skin. The results from restoring nitric oxide production through the use of Pneuma Nitric Oxide Activating Skin Serum are stunning. Not only can you see the difference within seconds of applying it, results after only 30 days are obvious and impressive. After 30 days, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth improve, and the overall tone, texture, complexion, and clarity of the skin improves. Pneuma is not intended to replace any of your existing skin serums but rather be an important add-on. Many people spend lots of money every month on skin care products but if your skin is not “primed” to receive the moisturizers, hydrators, or growth factors, then these products will have limited effects. If you use Pneuma Nitric Oxide Activating Serum first, to allow other actives to penetrate and be effectively delivered, then all other products will work better.

ma Nitric Oxide says, “I have a 20 year history of productivity and innovation in the nitric oxide space. We know how to the body makes nitric oxide. We know what goes wrong in people than cannot make it naturally, and the consequences on aging, and most importantly, we know how to fix these issues and make nitric oxide naturally. I feel we have an obligation and a responsibility to provide product technology to restore and regenerate nitric oxide so that the world can understand and experience the power of nitric oxide. Pneuma Nitric Oxide Activating Skin Serum is just the latest in my nitric oxide product technology. We are proud and excited to bring nitric oxide to the beauty and cosmetic world. This product will revolutionize the skin care and cosmetic industry. This is where Beauty meets Wellness and where we delivery on our promise of applied physiology to restore natural production of nitric oxide when and where it is needed and at the right amount.” HB

Dr. Bryan has published hundreds of scientific and medical studies on nitric oxide. He is a prolific innovator and inventor with dozens of issued U.S. and International patents on his nitric oxide technology. He is considered as one of the foremost experts on nitric oxide in the world. For more information and to order product, please visit pneumanitricoxide.com.

HERBS&SPICES

PLANTAIN: An Essential Herb for Your Summer First Aid Kit By Allison Prater

N

ot to be confused with the banana’s cousin, the green leafy herb Plantain or Plantago major is often mistaken for a common weed, due to its propensity for popping up in lawns, and along roadsides. I saw some in the grass at the park near our house just the other day. Plantain has a base of oval-shaped, strongly veined leaves that surround vertical spikes of flowers that are sometimes described as a miniature version of a cattail plant. Plantain has a long history as a treasured medicinal herb throughout the world. It was considered to be one of the nine sacred herbs of the ancient Saxons for example. Known as Ch’e-Ch’ien in Chinese medicine, this herb has a long history of use for conditions related to sexual health and fertility. It has a history of use in folk remedies throughout Latin America as well. It’s no wonder that so many healing traditions have gravitated toward working with this beneficial herb. It has a host of health and beauty-boosting properties, as well as some very practical uses for common woes associated with our favorite outdoor summer activities. Got a sunburn? Applying a poultice of fresh plantain to the affected area will ease discomfort and soothe irritated skin. This poultice is also helpful in speeding wound healing and in easing the pain

of bee stings and mosquito bites. The New England Journal of Medicine even published an account of the successful application of plantain leaves to soothe the itching of Poison Ivy. The roots may be chewed to soothe a toothache as well. The topical application of Plantain is helpful for many common skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. It is even said to reduce the appearance of scars. There are many benefits for the hair as well. An herbal infusion of plantain can be combined with a bit of apple cider vinegar for use as a hair rinse that is said to increase volume and encourage healthy hair growth.

Due to Plantain’s mucilaginous and expectorant properties, a tea from the leaves has been used to soothe infections of the respiratory system. The diuretic properties of the herb are used to treat urinary infections by encouraging frequent urination. As always it is important to consult with a licensed healthcare professional that you trust before beginning this or any other herbal regimen. Plantain is a low-maintenance herb that requires nothing in the way of special growing conditions. The plant propagates by seed in the early spring or fall. Plantain will flourish in any soil and can tolerate both full and partial shade. You may very

NEWSBRIEFS HEMP NO LONGER CLASSIFIED AS CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE The USDA came through with their promise to release a legal opinion on many of the issues concerning the industry. This should resolve many of the problems that have arisen since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill — issues such as banking and the unfortunate arrests of those transporting hemp.

Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946. An exception applies to a person who was lawfully growing hemp under the 2014 Farm Bill before December 20, 2018, and whose conviction also occurred before that date. RAY: RESTORATIVE ARTS & YOGA FESTIVAL

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (2018 Farm Bill) authorized the production of hemp and removed hemp and hemp seeds from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) schedule of Controlled Substances. In response to questions raised concerning provisions pertaining to the interstate transportation of hemp and who may obtain a license to produce hemp, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC) has concluded the following:

The Third Annual Restorative Arts & Yoga Festival (RAY) took place May 31-June 2, 2019 at Granlibakken Tahoe, as a part of the Sierra Soul Series of Wellness Events.

1. As of the enactment of the 2018 Farm Bill on December 20, 2018, hemp has been removed from schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and is no longer a controlled substance. 2. After USDA publishes regulations implementing the new hemp production provisions of the 2018 Farm Bill, States and Indian tribes may not prohibit the interstate transportation or shipment of hemp lawfully produced under a State or Tribal plan or under a license issued under the USDA plan. 3. States and Indian tribes also may not prohibit the interstate transportation or shipment of hemp lawfully produced under the 2014 Farm Bill. 4. REFRESHING WATERMELON FETA SALAD Pictured on our cover: This refreshing salad with watermelon, feta cheese, and fresh mint is simply dressed with olive oil and lime juice. Perfect for summer! Note: This salad is best made just prior to serving. Prepare one hour or less before your meal. INGREDIENTS 8 lb. whole seedless watermelon, chilled (about 12 cups of cubed fruit) 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 whole limes, juiced 1 1/2 tsp salt 3/4 tsp black pepper 1 cup fresh mint leaves, chopped 1 1/2 cups crumbled feta cheese (sheep’s milk feta preferred) INSTRUCTIONS Cut rind from the watermelon, then chop the fruit into 1-inch chunks. Place chunks in a colander to drain as your chop. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, fresh lime juice, salt, and black pepper to create a dressing. Place watermelon in a large salad bowl. Pour dressing and chopped mint over the watermelon and toss gently to coat. Pour the crumbled feta into the salad bowl and stir gently to integrate the cheese into the salad. Serve. HB
