The Gift of Healing and Health

T Wishing you a healthy, joyous and meaningful holiday and New Year, with love from all of us at Healthy Beginnings Magazine.

he capacity to heal is a treasure that lies deep within each of us. Finding access to this powerful gift is what brings healing about. Knowledgeable and caring health care providers, loving family members, friends and spiritual advisors can all be part of our movement toward healing; they provide guidance, inspiration and assistance. Encouraging words, thoughts and ideas are also helpful, especially when one gets lost in fear or depression or is overwhelmed by the demands of caregiving for someone else. We hope that we too will inspire and support you in your very personal journey of health, and help you find the magical connections you need to bring healing to your whole self — heart, mind and body. • When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied. ~ Herophilus, the Father of Anatomy • The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words. ~ Rachel Naomi Remen, MD • The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness. ~ Abraham Maslow • It’s so important to realize that every time you get upset, it drains your emotional energy. Losing your cool makes you tired. Getting angry a lot messes with your health. ~ Joyce Meyer • It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti • Your body holds deep wisdom. Trust in it. Learn from it. Nourish it. Watch your life transform and be healthy. ~ Bella Bleue (Erin Keane) • Knowing that we can be loved exactly as we are gives us all the best opportunity for growing into the healthiest of people. ~ Fred Rogers • The truth is that until we love cancer, we can’t love life. It doesn’t matter what symbols we use — poverty, loneliness, loss — it’s the concepts of good and bad that we attach to them that make us suffer. ~ Byron Katie • The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease. ~ Thomas Edison • Whenever there is a problem, repeat over and over: All is well. Everything is working out for my highest good. Out of this situation only good will come. ~ Mona Lisa Schulz, MD, PhD

PUBLISHER’SLETTER A SPECIAL LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

A

Address to: PO Box 18985, Reno NV 89511

PUBLISHER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

s we launch into December, we also come to the end of a decade. Joy filled endings and uncharted new beginnings — for me, a monumental time to reflect on the last 10 years, where I’ve been and where I want to go, personally and professionally. Professionally speaking, Healthy Beginnings Magazine is proud to announce that we are going to a bi-monthly publication, (i.e., published every other month) in January 2020. HB will still be delivered monthly to over 450 distribution locations throughout northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region, and this number keeps growing. This is an exciting time for the HB family, and the perfect time to make forward-thinking changes. The way we communicate continues to progress rapidly in many positive ways. We can communicate instantly across the oceans via our phones, email, texts, social media and the Internet, reaching thousands, even millions of people at a click of a button. This is great, yet there is a downside. Managing data and social media feeds takes up precious time for our readers and advertisers. Reaching a target audience is more complicated online — where do certain age groups hang out? How do they feel about being stalked by artificial marketing spies? We are becoming more fragmented and disconnected than ever before. Adjunctively, print information is long-lasting, secure and more powerful than ever. Once published, the written word cannot be altered, which makes it more reliable, trusted and prestigious than digital mediums. And magazines continue to be the number one medium for driving purchase consideration, intent, and plugging back into the digital platform for followup web searches and research. HB’s digital world is expanding its presence presence, capturing a much larger and wider swath of consumers who want healthy, holistic and natural products and services. Benefitting both our advertisers and our readers. And HBmag.com Internet traffic surpasses local websites because it is viewed by Google as an unbiased website, like a library. Most important, the website can be updated daily with fresh, time-sensitive content and information!

NEWSBRIEFS TAKING ANOTHER LOOK AT WHAT SCHOOLS WERE MADE FOR... KIDS

to create not just consume. Join the conversation in a productive way, and be part of the educational branch of what many are calling the new industrial revolution. It is a work that deserves our best efforts.

‘Kids aren’t the same as they used to be!’ Right. Nobody is arguing that point. Kids are different for sure, and all those changes aren’t all that bad. What is bad, is preparing them, and school programs the same way we have been for the past 150 years. It may be a surprise to hear that the foundations of our educational system developed way back at the dawn of the industrial revolution. The ideas of Johan Fichte, who was working to create an obedient army in Prussia, were adopted by Horace Mann. He was supported by four men, last names Ford, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, and Morgan, who were also looking to create obedient, predictable ‘armies’ of workers for their new industries. Since that time, not very much has changed at all. Kids still are often expected to learn in segmented, structured, predictable classes where they and their teachers are judged and ranked largely based on repetitive, standardized tests, GPAs, and other measurements. Measurements that may not always be a measure of real learning. Not the world we live in now. There is a great effort worldwide to resee what school should and can be. The tools available now offer many more possibilities than even 10 years ago. Like any other industry or part of society, we are at a time of essential course correction. So let’s take another look. In Churchill County School District we are doing just that. We want to help students prepare to be life ready, and life ready is not the same set of skills that it used to be. It isn’t based on spitting out facts that could be given by Alexa, or Siri, or Google either. Identifying traits that will help students is a starting point. In ChurchillCSD, we have adopted the ChurchillCSD Profile of a Learner. This profile outlines six traits that will serve students no matter how they wish to contribute and thrive in society. This isn’t just for the college-bound kid, it

It is for EVERY KID and is a central goal for all we do. We are working hard to share this message with everyone as we start to move forward. Now for the hard part. All change is hard. The foundations that our current educational system was built upon began in the mid-1800s. That is a lot of tradition that needs to give way to a modern way of learning and teaching that uses modern and innovative tools, methods, and ideas. Students are more than fact machines, they are people and need to have the opportunity to develop as such. We don’t get too upset when cars, computers, medicine, or business offer new ways of attacking old challenges. Amazon, Grubhub, Uber, and Google are all examples of that. Don’t be too quick to judge ideas that come up even if they weren’t ‘the way it used to be’ in education. Kids need more than ever to be challenged to think not to memorize, to discuss not just listen to instructions,

FINDING YOUR MORAL COMPASS By Andy Drymalski, EdD

P

atricia (not her real name) was a bright and industrious young woman who had worked her way up to a management position in a large retail store chain. Unfortunately, she was also experiencing a level of anxiety that was making her life increasingly miserable. As she talked about her duties the cause of her anxiety was revealed.

embrace the corporate rationalizations she was instructed in — she succumbed to anxiety symptoms which she could neither control or think away. Along similar lines, Carl Jung tells the story of a highly intelligent young man who came to see him for help with a neurosis (e.g., depression or an anxiety disorder). Jung relates that this patient had worked out a very detailed explanation of his neurosis through careful study of the available medical literature. Jung was impressed by his thorough analysis and granted that “if it were only a question of insight into the causal connections of a neurosis, he should in all truth be cured” (Modern Man in Search of a Soul, p. 193). And yet, he wasn’t cured. Jung surmised that the young man’s attitude to life was somehow fundamentally wrong. He explains:

It was Patricia’s task to prepare new stores for opening by directing the placement of displays, and hiring and training new employees. However, in selling potential workers on the opportunities for promotion and better pay that they would enjoy, she knew she was lying. In fact, it was essentially corporate policy to exaggerate the truth (basically, lie) in order to acquire higher caliber workers at minimum wage pay. Because what she was doing transgressed her inner conscience and moral values—and despite her efforts to

Visit HBmag.com

In reading his account of his life, I noticed that he often spent winters at St. Moritz or Nice. I therefore asked him who paid for these holidays, and it thereupon came out that a poor school-teacher who loved him had cruelly deprived herself to indulge the young man in these visits to pleasure-resorts. His want of conscience was the cause of his neurosis, and it is not hard to see why scientific understanding failed to help him. His fundamental error lay in his moral attitude. He found my way of looking at the question shockingly unscientific, for morals have nothing to do with science. He supposed that, by

invoking scientific thought he could spirit away the immorality which he himself could not stomach. He would not even admit that a conflict existed, because his mistress [benefactor] gave him the money of her free will (p. 193). Nowadays there is a tendency to view psychological problems in materialistic terms, for example, as due to an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, poor “coping skills” or the ubiquitous catch-all, “stress.” Consequently, we go out in search of medications that will correct our brain chemistry issues, or we go to a therapist looking for “tools” to help with our anxiety, depression, etc. Our guiding assumption seems to be that the psyche is a machine and the psychiatrist or therapist is a mechanic. (Unfortunately, the latter assumptions are sometime true.) We don’t like to consider that perhaps our psychological issues, our addictions and relationship problems may have their root in a flawed moral stance or attitude. We may believe that our conscience owes its life solely and strictly to the standards and rules drilled into us by parents and other authority figures during our formative years. The philosophical concept of moral relativism reassures us that values and moral codes are ultimately arbitrary, a function of the particular culture, family or social group we choose to affiliate with. None is any more valid than another. This seems to be the current “politically correct” way of looking at things. The young man’s neurosis (above) is therefore perplexing, for at a conscious level he seems quite content with his behavior. He feels justified by the logic of his position. And yet, his larger personality is not persuaded. It is not fooled; it is not buying it. He is confronted--as most of us are when we stray too far from our own nature and deeper values--with the reality of a moral instinct that transcends his conscious viewpoint and stands in opposition to it. Although what is considered moral by society may vary from culture to culture, or even from situation to situation for different individuals, your psyche has a specific code of action and attitudes that it expects of you. Clever rationalizations or the typical pleas of “but everyone else does it” or “everyone else sees it this way” mean nothing to the law and vision of your own soul. HB

NAGALASE TEST: Newest Cancer Biomarker By Robert A.Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

cancers of the prostate, breast, colon, lung, esophagus, stomach liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, testicles, uterus, ovary, mesothelioma, melanoma, fibrosarcoma, glioblastoma, neuroblastoma and various leukemias. The level of Nagalase varies among tumor types, size, staging and the degree of malignancy or invasiveness. In the blood of healthy humans, increased Nagalase activity has not been detected. A decrease in Nagalase values is interpreted as an indication of a positive response to treatment. Testing Nagalase activity (levels) as a biomarker is a sensitive way to monitor the effect of any therapy in cancer treatment and certain viral infections, including HIV and even Ebola. The testing procedures are specific. Nagalase is isolated from a blood sample and enzyme activity is measured in a quantitative manner. The great sensitivity of the test may help the physician/ oncologist to obtain a better understanding of any given therapy and to fine tune the treatment.

W

hen people learn that they have cancer, getting information about language, testing and treatment options can make a huge difference in how they move forward. Let’s start by defining what a cancer biomarker is and why it is relevant.

Unfortunately, this test is not currently covered by statutory health insurance (Medicare, etc.) and needs to be paid for by the patient. This is in spite of the fact that the testing is performed at a government approved lab in New Jersey.

“A cancer biomarker refers to a substance or process that is indicative of the presence of cancer in the body. A biomarker may be a molecule secreted by a tumor or a specific response of the body to the presence of cancer.”

And now, the obvious question: “How,” you ask, “can someone get the Macrophage cells turned back ‘on’ functionally so they can resume their immune system work of destroying unwanted invaders in our bodies?” Fortunately, there is a therapy called GcMAF that does just that, but this is a topic for another discussion. HB

Testing levels of the biomarker Nagalase measures the activity of ‘alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase’ in the blood. Nagalase is an enzyme that is released by cancer cells and some viruses into the blood. It was discovered by Dr. Nobuto Yamamoto in the late 1990’s. Its function is to bind to the vitamin D receptor sites on the Macrophage white blood cells and make a tumor or virus invisible to the immune system.

REFERENCES: 1. Mohamad SB, et al. “Tumor cell alpha-N-acetylgalactosamineidase activity and its involvement in GcMAF-related macrophage activation.” Comp Biochem Physiol A Mol Integr Physiol 2002;132:1-8.

The Macrophage cells (literally ‘big eaters’) are immune cells that, when functioning normally, seek, find, and destroy invading microorganisms, including cancer. However, when Nagalase binds to the vitamin D receptor sites, this action effectively blinds the immune system, i.e., the Macrophage cells, to the presence of tumor cells or viruses. This effectively turns the Macrophage cells ‘off.’ As Nagalase levels increase, the work of the Macrophage cells decreases.

Artery Cleaners By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD, Practitioner of Homeopathic Medicine inserting cholesterol and calcium into the arteries to strengthen them. Thus, vitamin C supplementation is vital for us all. We suggest taking vitamin C up to bowel intolerance (gassy, loose bowels), or 3 to 10 grams per day. Simply reducing the dose will reduce the overdose symptoms. Chelation Power From the early pioneers of chelation therapy to the present day there are numerous studies confirming the power of chelation therapy. For technically inclined readers, EDTA has been used in Germany since the 1930’s to remove calcium from water in industrial processes so that textile dyes wouldn’t run. After WWII, it was evaluated to remove radiation poisoning and did well if the radiation was tied to a heavy metal such as iodine.

helation, Plaquex® and Your Arteries

Hardening of the arteries is often an inevitable part of aging. It restricts blood flow to our organs, especially heart, brain, kidneys and extremities. Hardening occurs when fat, cholesterol, and other substances build up in arterial walls as plaque, and result in damaging or deadly heart attacks and strokes. These can be reduced by a healthy lifestyle, enlightened nutrient supplementation, and treatment of arteries with chelating agents and fat dissolvers. I recently reviewed an amazing compilation of articles about chelation dating back to the early 1950’s, reminding me that chelation therapy for arterial disease has been around for a long time. I first began using chelation therapy in 1976. [NOTE: The word chelation is derived from the Greek chelos, the crab’s claw.] The articles documented the power of the chelating agent EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid) to reverse angina (chest pain) and claudication (leg pain due to restricted circulation in the arteries with exercise). EDTA binds with calcium deposits in arteries and carries them out of the system. In the same way, it removes heavy metals like lead or mercury. Calcification (hardening) of the arteries involves, in part, a vitamin C deficiency. Dr. Linus Pauling and his collaborators made the case that the presence of arterial elastin, the stretchy connective tissue that makes the arteries contract thousands of times per day, is dependent on vitamin C availability. Unlike most other animal species, humans don’t make their own vitamin C. Without enough vitamin C, arteries lose their ‘ground substance’ and become watery and weak. The body responds by Visit HBmag.com

The most extraordinary property of EDTA, however, is its ability to remove heavy metals, and especially lead. Lead is extremely weakening to the human system and damaging to health. EDTA is still the primary agent used to remove lead in mainstream medicine. In Nevada, mostly due to mining, we are exposed to lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic in our water. Heavy metal toxicities can resemble neurological illnesses, such as MS, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Routine hair analysis and IV EDTA challenge with urine collections can reveal heavy metal intoxication and whether chelation therapy is needed to remove these dangerous agents from your body. Review of the chelation literature and our own medical experience confirms that chelation therapy can assist with cardiovascular disease. There is evidence that patients scheduled for invasive cardiac surgery have not needed the surgery after chelation therapy. Typical IV chelation can be done once or twice/week for 30 or 40 sessions to relieve heart symptoms or 10 chelations/year for preventive maintenance. Oral EDTA and EDTA suppositories are also helpful. Your Cholesterol Roto Rooter Phosphatidylcholine, also found in lecithin, is a natural fat liquifier. It is a major component of the more than 100 trillion cell membranes that controls the nutrients, hormones and toxins going in and out of our cells. Phosphatidylcholine is also a building block for acetylcholine, the chemical in our brain in charge of memory. Plaquex® is a phosphatidylcholine supplement that has impressive PowerPoint presentations showing toes that are blue/black

from diabetic gangrene being restored to a healthy pink color after a series of intravenous Plaquex® infusions. Along with chelation therapy, it has assisted patients with vascular disease. Taking care of our arteries, especially as we age, can prevent the many devastating consequences of arterial blockage. Oral phosphatidylcholine, 1 gram (1,000 mg) twice per day, is a powerful preventive tool for arterial health, important at any time but even more critical following heart attack and stroke, to help prevent recurrence. The Real Power of Vitamin C By Melvin Ibarra Nario, M.D., H.M.D.

3. Easy bleeding — gums and nosebleeds 4. Easy bruising 5. Slow healing 6. Pain 7. Fatigue The most common uses of vitamin C are for cold and flu prevention, along with treating the above listed symptoms, but what are the hidden secrets on how we can utilize it? A. Vitamin C is needed for collagen production in our bodies. Collagen is important in forming connective tissues such as cartilage, ligaments, muscles, bones, skin and many others. In the bigger picture, collagen holds the body together through its fibers, and vitamin C is responsible for being the “glue” that holds collagen together. So when we work out and tear muscle fibers, vitamin C plays a huge role in repairing them so they can be stronger and bigger.

A

sk the person next to you what is the most common vitamin they take, especially during winter. The majority of them will answer Vitamin C. It has built a reputation for being one of the most potent natural “flu fighters.” It has been proven that Vitamin C builds our immune system and helps to protect us from infections. Studies have shown that C can prevent or lessen the impact of the common cold. Those who take C do not get as sick, and they recover 10% faster than those who do not take it. For individuals who are undergoing extreme physical stress, it can cut their cold risk immediately in half if they take C on a regular basis. This applies not only to infections up in the respiratory tract, but even down below where the sun does not shine. Bacterial vaginosis is a female genital tract infection which is caused by the overgrowth of bad bacteria due to a high ph in the vaginal canal. By using a vaginal Vitamin C (silicon coated — so it will be released slowly to prevent irritation), this will reacidify the canal, thus killing the infection. Due to an unhealthy diet of processed food with less greens and fruits, Vitamin C deficiency is present in our society and often goes undetected. You may have a deficiency if you have these symptoms: 1. Formation of new and numerous wrinkles 2. Hair breakage and brittle nails

B. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant. It fights free radicals in our bodies that make our immune system weaker. A good example is when we develop canker sores. This condition signifies that we are in a state of low antioxidants and high free radicals. By taking C for a minimum of 3 months, the common number of sores experienced by people with a deficiency can be usually be cut in half. C. Lead toxicity is a common and undiagnosed medical condition that affects many people. Most of the time we suffer from symptoms, such as unidentified abdominal pain, changes in behavior, and headaches. We are exposed to lead through cigarettes, car exhaust, bullets, fishing sinkers, pipes and sink faucets (which contaminate drinking water), and old paint from houses. This condition is difficult to treat, but with regular doses of C daily, we will prevent intestinal reabsorption of lead in our bodies, thus facilitating elimination. In a span of 1 week, lead levels were noted to drop with this regimen. D. In the fight against the Big C (Cancer), Vitamin C is an answer. In the studies by Linus Pauling, who has been named the greatest chemist of the 20th century, showed that high doses (10 grams) of Intravenous C had resulted in a survival rate that is 4.2x greater than non vitamin C subjects who were all terminal cancer patients. The intake of Vitamin C does not come without a risk. 1,000 mg a day can produce rare kidney stone formations, which are

To answer the greatest question of all: What is the proper dose for commercial oral vitamin supplements that we buy? 1,000 mg? 2,000 mg? More? Studies have proven that our intestinal lining has a limited capacity to absorb — only 200 mg daily. Unfortunately, you will just produce expensive urine and feces if you take more. The solution is to bypass the gut to absorb more doses through injectables.

Smart Drugs Next Generation W By Dr. William Clearfield, D.O.

hat are nootropics? Many people have never heard of them. Other people have been using them for decades to enhance physical performance, brain function and memory. Some common ‘over the counter’ nootropics include creatine, fish oils, caffeine, L-Theanine and other amino acids, some B-vitamins, phosphatidylserine, Rhodiola rosea, Ashwaganda, Bacopa, Panax ginseng, ginkgo biloba, and nicotine. Other nootropics, like Ritalin, are available by prescription only. New ‘designer smart drugs’ are also under development. The Brain Peptides Nootropics or “smart drugs” are natural and/or synthetic compounds designed to enhance brain function. Nootropics by definition must have a generally non-toxic profile and pose a low risk of side effects; i.e., they must be relatively safe and neuroprotective when used appropriately. Dr. Corneliu Giurgea, the Romanian researcher credited with coining the term nootropics in 1972, described their function as the ability to: • Enhance memory and learning capacity • Protect the brain from injury during oxygenation or chemical assault, e.g., o Cerebral ischemia, stroke o Drugs, neurotoxins • Increase neuronal efficiency • Enhance focus and motivation Some “smart drugs” are as close as your kitchen pantry. Caffeine’s effects as a stimulant and mood elevator were described in ancient Chinese and Arabic texts in 2700 B.C. and 575 A.D., respectively. Goats who consumed berries of what we now call the coffee plant, “gamboled and frisked about all through the night instead of sleeping.” By adding L-Theanine (an extract of green tea) to caffeine, the more undesirable side effects of caffeine, e.g., anxiety, insomnia, and blood pressure elevation, can be neutralized. At the same time, caffeine’s positive effects of improved speed

and accuracy of performance and decreased susceptibility to distraction are enhanced, with as little as 50 mg of caffeine and 100 mg L-theanine. Here are a few other mostly naturally occurring nootropic agents and their typical dosage ranges: • Creatine — to improve short term memory, reasoning, and enhance oxygenation. o Dose: Loading 20 gm/day, x 5 days, then 5 gm/d • Bacopa — to enhance focus and attention, reduce anxiety and improve long term memory. o Dose: 300 mg/day taken with a fat source (e.g., Ghee, Avocado, Coconut Oil) • Rhodiola — to improve mood, enhance memory, reduce reaction time, improve reasoning skills. o Dose: 350 mg/day. 3 days on; 1 day off cycle • Asian Ginseng — to Improve memory and memory retention, enhance attention and focus, reduce anxiety, enhance performance, reaction time, and endurance. o Dose: 100 mg/day • Piracetam and other choline-GABA derivatives—to enhance memory formation. Choline enhances the effects of piracetam. o Dose: 1600 mg piracetam; 200-300 mg choline/day Peptide Nootropics In the peptide world, nootropics come in three flavors, Cerebrolysin, Semax, and Selank. Cerebrolysin — A combination of neuropeptides derived from the low molecular weight (LMW) purified brain proteins and amino acids. Cerebrolysin provides both neuroprotection and neuro-regeneration in the face of tissue insult. Cerebrolysin’s anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, neuro-regenerative nature makes it ideal for stroke, traumatic brain injury, concussion, and dementia victims. Improvements in cognitive

abilities and in activities of daily living are predictable outcomes with adequate doses. Semax – A neuroprotective, anxiolytic, and antidepressant peptide. Semax is indicated for: Anxiety; depression; memory retention and learning; increased mental processing; improved memory recall; hypoxic states; TIA, CVA (Stroke) and acute MI; heavy metal toxicity; pain relief; ADHD; increased attention during repetitive tasks; migraine headache; increased intellectual capacity; mental clarity; mood stabilizer; improved outlook on life; no “high” feeling; increased energy; improved visual acuity; expanded visual fields; increased electrical sensitivity of optic nerve; improved color vision; improved olfactory sense. Selank – A long-acting anxiolytic, antidepressant, anti-asthenic nootropic agent, Selank acts on the same pathways as benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax, but without the sedating, cognitive loss, or dependency side effects. Selank is indicated for: Anxiety; depression; chronic fatigue; adrenal fatigue; anti-viral activity; anti-inflammatory activity; mast cell sensitivity; Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Next month we will review each peptide in depth. In the meantime, always check with a healthcare provider before embarking on a new health regime. HB

ENERGY:

The Universal Medicine By Hylary Ahrendt, RYT 500, CPT

Energy in the Human Anatomy The human energetic anatomy is thought to be a blueprint for physical growth as well as an unrestricted extension of the non-physical body. It is organized into three basic structures: fields, channels, and subtle energy bodies. Fields surround the body and play a role in grounding it into the earth. They house a person’s mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional connections, as well as the aura. Fields also connect the chakra energy bodies and provide a link to other planes and dimensions of reality. Channels house the flow of life force (also known as ki, qi, and prana) within the human body. The meridians accessed through traditional Chinese acupuncture offer an example of this.

E

nergy has been described as the next frontier in medicine. It is unsurprising that, given the current state of health crises in the U.S. and beyond, doctors and patients alike are open to exploring both traditional and alternative pathways to healing. But what exactly is energy and what role does it play in the realm of human health today?

Subtle energy bodies, such as the chakras, act as an interface between the energetic and physical bodies. Not only do the chakras correspond with physical organs and glands in the body, they also act as filters for the stream of atmospheric energy that moves through us.

Energy — What Is It, Really?

Energy medicine manipulates the flow of energy in and around the body in order to remove stagnation or revitalize target areas. Just as one rearranges the mossy stones in the brook to allow the water to flow, energy healers (including the patients, themselves) use various techniques to alter the flow of life force.

Traditionally, energy is defined as the capacity to do work or create an effect. Energy can exist in a variety of forms, including thermal, sound, and electromagnetic. Energy can be physical (with a positive mass and electrical nature). Science tells us that the particles that make up what we perceive to be a solid, physical reality are vibrating at all times. In other words, everything — including the dining room table and your own left foot — is in a state of constant motion! Not only are the particles moving — they are uniquely-informed and vibrating at their own, specified frequencies. They are, in essence, minuscule building blocks of the reality we experience on the physical plane. We can’t see this energy because the human senses only function within a select range of frequencies on the electromagnetic spectrum. Energy can also be subtle (with a negative mass and magnetic nature). This is the kind of energy that healers have referred to for centuries, for example, when they are talking about chakras. Internationally-acclaimed author and healer Cyndi Dale defines energy as “information that vibrates.” But why? Visit HBmag.com

How Energy Medicine Works

Common Forms of Energy Medicine Stemming from traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture utilizes the direct, physical intervention of thin needles inserted into the skin to stimulate energy points along the meridians. Also finding roots in China, qigong incorporates the use of fluid movement, breath work, and meditation in order to cultivate and heal the life force known as qi. The practice strengthens the body while relaxing the mind, encouraging a sense of focused calm amongst practitioners. Reiki was developed in 20th century Japan around guiding principles instilled by the emperor Meiji. The principles promote self-awareness and involvement in one’s own healing. Reiki therapy involves hands-on techniques to restore & revitalize the flow of ki.

The subcontinental Indian system of yoga incorporates pranayama (breath work), asanas (postures), and various passive and active practices in order to achieve clarity of the mind and fitness of the body. An Intermingling World of Medicine Prior to the invention of the microscope, bacteria were invisible (and the theory of their existence was even laughed at), but they were no less of a danger to human health. With the development of instruments such as the SQUID magnetometer, scientists can measure the unique biomagnetic pulses of the human organs and therefore observe how disease might shift the biomagnetic fields of the body. Technology can also be used to manipulate energy pathways to promote healing. Ultimately, with the development of new technologies and the resurgence of traditional energy healing techniques, the intermingling of medicinal approaches is steadily on the rise. Slowly but surely, we are beginning to see how unified the physical and subtle truly are. HB

Somatic Consequences of Traumatic Grief by Gabrielle Pullen, MFA, GCFP

W

hen a death is unexpected, the body takes over…

Instinctively, we recognize that trauma has a somatic impact.

The word, “Soma” was used in an ancient Greece to mean the body, or the mass of the whole self. Traumatic grief affects the very core of individual identity, security and meaning. Every aspect of living then becomes heavy, as if infused with excessive mass. Clearly, it affects the whole self. When something happens that flies in the face of everything you believe in, the experience is not just emotional, not just spiritual, it stuns the body. When someone dies who is so close to you that you have built your life around them, the effect is visceral. Shock, heightened awareness, a sense of the surreal and often unusual resources of energy accompany the feeling of complete weakness.

Expressions such as “it cuts like a knife,” or “it was like being punched in the stomach,” or the feeling of loss was “gutwrenching” are all common because the body knows what the mind cannot dare to contemplate. For a mother who has carried a child for nine months, the bond is especially physical, even years after birth. But most people, not just mothers, have an easier time doing for others than for themselves. This is the paradox of such a death: the psyche is being called out. No longer is it possible to make another person the reason for being, for doing everything you do. Grocery shopping, work, vacation – it all becomes instantly meaningless.

Traumatic grief has somatic consequences that require a different intervention than grief alone. It is well-known that grief is individual, that each person must go through their own process in their own time. It is even acknowledged that there is a difference between the death of a parent after adulthood, which is an expected part of life, and the death of a child, a sibling, a partner, or even a parent before the child is grown. Yet, the solutions on offer for resolving grief do not, for the most part, address this huge distinction. We lack a terminology for the difference. Yet, the impact is built into our language.

Because traumatic grief is so intensely physical, it demands a solution that addresses the body. Talk therapy addresses the mind and the emotions. Spiritual counseling addresses the spirit, yet the body is still racing with the drastic increase in hormones from the adrenal response that floods the cells with cortisol. The autonomic nervous system takes over in a heartbeat. Circulation and oxygen are suddenly shunted away from the organs out to the arms and legs in preparation for flight from a physical threat. The stress response predominates, overriding the functions of rest, digestion, and immune function which

never fully come back unless you finally find some resolution to your grief. Normal grief – the kind that results when there is a death that is expected in the normal course of a life – this kind of grief has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Yet, traumatic grief is often expected to last a lifetime. You are told, “You will never get over this.” Or, “It will never stop hurting.” But if a person continues to live in a state of adrenal overload for years, health deteriorates, mental agitation becomes the norm, and negative thoughts and fearfulness can only become habitual, unless there is an intervention that is somatic, involving the whole self. Such a trauma is a moment of truth, when the call to look deeper into personal motivation and integrity is imperative. Why is it easier to do for others than to do for yourself? The challenge of traumatic grief is metamorphosis. A somatic response demands an expansion of awareness that includes the courage to allow the transformation of who you were into who you have become. It requires a willingness to embody actions, which support a return to normalcy. In terms of the nervous system, this means a return to rest, to self-compassion, to exercise and relaxation. In terms of individuation, “a somatic consequence” means a return to the unfinished process of learning how to create a self, for you are ever-changing, infinitely diverse, and adaptable. In terms of spirit, it means a return to love, and to building a life based on having nowhere else to turn other than within, back to that vaster reality from which you came, and where those you love have taken up consciousness… HB

Meet Lauren! Before I got into aquatic fitness, I was worried about sharp shooting pains in my knee and if I could even pick up my 2-year old. I loved being active and these fearful thoughts really held me back. It was actually my mom who introduced me to Ai Chi and aquatic aerobics; she paid for my first class and I was hooked! The thing I love most about water exercise is there is no impact on my joints which can cause me problems with other types of activities. It helps me manage chronic pain and has helped improve other areas of fitness...my "yoga game" is so much better! The thing that I want others to know is that, no matter what fitness level you are at, water exercise can benefit so many of your body's needs. Most people have no idea how much it can help them whether they are limited in mobility, or even athletes.

Mindful Pain Relief Ai Chi is a water exercise and relaxation practice that is comprised of deep breathing and slow, continuous movements. It had a big impact on Lauren’s life! So much so, that she is now an Ai Chi and aquatic fitness instructor this day. Originally based on Tai Chi and Qi Gong, Ai Chi has been clinically proven to aid in fatigue, balance, strength, stiffness, and pain.

Do more of what you love You know what it's like to work in your garden, or hike on the weekend and then find yourself tired and sore for the next several days. Certain conditions like lower back pain, bad knees, and ankle instability make those activities even more difficult, if not entirely impossible. You already know you need to exercise and stretch, but‌ it hurts! If you can relate to this, aquatic exercise might be the perfect solution for you. Lauren is right. No matter what fitness level you're at, water exercise can benefit you, and you will be quite surprised at the results! On land, gravity constantly exerts force against your body. When in the water, you alleviate gravitational pressure by 80-90%, which releases painful tension throughout your entire body. When tension is released from muscles and joints, circulation improves, inflammation decreases, and joints have the opportunity to replenish synovial fluid with movement. Overall, your body has the chance to get a break from the constant force of gravity, which feels good and relieves pain. Hydrostatic pressure is the force of water that's exerted on to the immersed body. The equal force of pressure that surrounds the body works much like compression socks increasing venous return. Water also provides resistance with every movement. In addition to strengthening your muscles, resistance also acts as a sensory gate which occupies your nervous system, thus blocking pain signals being sent to the brain. At Paradise Salon Spa and Wellness, we believe in aquatic exercise so much, we've created an entire aquatic fitness facility. We offer classes and equipment that are almost impossible to find outside of clinical settings. Water is fun, refreshing, and also provides unique benefits that you can't experience elsewhere. Our clients regularly tell us how much they have been able to get back to doing the things they love most in life all because of water fitness. A Grandma’s Story:

At the Christmas Dinner Table Based on the skill sets in the audiobook: Taking the Power Struggle Out of Parenting By Ami Atkinson Combs and Sharon Strand Ellison “If you want another pepper — then ask Papa politely and I am sure he will share with you.” Less than a moment later, that pepper was thwacked back down on Papa’s plate, and she was saying, ‘Papa can I have another pepper please?’ I wish I could show you or accurately describe the look on her face when I have been making the “If... then” predictions with just the simple facts of the situation. Her eyes are open wide, her facial muscles are relaxed; and I swear that I can hear her neurons processing. Each time, she has chosen to do something sensible, and sometimes her solution is even better than the thing I was thinking of. And it happens in nanoseconds. I would love to see how the brain is doing this.

W

Powerful Non-Defensive Communication™ (PNDC) Tips:

hen a child is behaving rudely, parents and grandparents may say things like, “Be nice,” or Don’t be rude.” Such statements are actually “commands,” and most children will resist and even intensify unwanted attitudes or behavior. Making a prediction about the consequences of a child’s choice can prompt the child, or any person, to make wiser choices. The phrasing involves saying, for example, “If you speak to me rudely, then I won’t answer you. If you talk to me respectfully, then I’d be happy to answer you.” The “if” and the “then” are essential because it outlines what the response will be if the child continues to be rude and what it will be if the child stops being rude. Sometimes, as in this case, only one side of the prediction is used. Much of the time, both are needed. In the following story from a grandmother, she switched from a habit of giving commands to making a prediction. “I have been using the ‘If... Then’ predictions with my granddaughter who will be three in a month. My technique is primitive but wildly effective.” She shared the following story. Tessa loves bell peppers; and the salad at our Christmas dinner had many peppers in it. She picked out the ones on her plate and then her mother gave her more. When she had chomped through those, she saw one on her Papa’s plate and grabbed it and whacked it down on her plate. In the past, I would have said, “Tessa, that is not nice, put Papa’s pepper back.” And she would have said ‘NO!’ and we would have been stuck. Instead, I said,

Tessa’s Response: While Tessa might still have chosen to say “NO!” to asking her grandfather to share his peppers, we’ve found the positive response to be more common. We have seen the look Gloria saw on Tessa’s face in response to the prediction. Neither of us ever tire of it. It’s a magical look — when a child shifts away from being demanding and opens up their heart and mind. In such moments, there is an inherent quality of respect and reciprocity, so positive energy and self-esteem radiate from the child’s face.

He has found that using ZeroPoint Technology and infusing Human BluePrintTM Frequencies into cold lasers, liquids, Tesla Crystals, clays, plants, minerals, frequency discs and stones effectively uses energy to adjust energy. This raises the vibration closer to the vibration of optimal wellness and allows the healing to begin. Joe promotes it as “Self-Healing or No Healing.” The last 10 years have opened many doors and avenues for an exciting hand-held, affordable selfcare tool, the Vibranz Red Natura Laser that helps to increase the Life Force Energy in our body. Using this selfcare tool relaxes the mitochondria, allowing it to improve cell to cell communication, taking the body from sympathetic (fight or flight-stress) to para-sympathetic (relax-restore-heal) levels in seconds or minutes. Joe describes this process as the optimal wellness frequencies in the selfcare tool bringing coherence to the field, using what is known as informational energy medicine. HB

12 INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN COSMETICS Extracted from cited references 1.

BHA (BUTYLATED HYDROXYANISOLE) AND BHT (BUTYLATED HYDROXYTOLUEN)

Found in lipsticks and moisturizers, among other types of cosmetics, BHA and BHT are classified as possible carcinogens. Long-term exposure to these ingredients has been linked to liver, thyroid, and kidney problems. 2.

COAL TAR DYES

On ingredients lists, these will show up as “P-phenylenediamine” or “CI” followed by a number. P-phenylenediamine is a coal tar dye found in hair dyes, while CI (or Color Index) numbers are used to identify coal tar dyes in a variety of pigmented cosmetics like lipstick. Derived from petroleum and composed of many different chemicals, coal tar dyes are recognized as a human carcinogen and have been linked to brain damage. 3.

DEA (DIETHANOLAMINE)

This ingredient helps make cosmetic products creamy or sudsy and can be found in products like facial cleansers, shampoos, soaps and moisturizers. In the short term, DEA can cause moderate skin and eye irritation, while sustained exposure has been linked to liver, skin, and thyroid cancers.

4.

DBP (DIBUTYL PHTHALATE)

Dibutyl phthalate is a plasticizer commonly used to prevent nail polish from becoming brittle. Consistent use of DBP has been linked to hormonal disruptions and developmental defects in fetuses, as well as liver and kidney failure. 5.

FORMALDEHYDE-RELEASING PRESERVATIVES

Look for ingredients like DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, quaternium-15, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. These preservatives are used to increase the shelf life of a variety of cosmetics and they work by continuously releasing small amounts of formaldehyde — a known human carcinogen. 6.

PARABENS

An estimated 75-90% of cosmetics contain parabens, making them the most widely used preservative in makeup and skincare products. The ingredient has been linked to hormonal disruptions, breast cancer, increased skin aging, and DNA damage. 7.

PARFUM (OR FRAGRANCE)

About 3,000 different ingredients are used in fragrances, though these will show up as one word on ingredient lists – “fragrance” or “parfum”. Used in

more than just perfumes, these smellenhancing substances can be found in almost every type of cosmetic product. Many unlisted ingredients in fragrances have been linked to health problems like asthma, allergies, and even cancer. 8.

PEG COMPOUNDS

Common in cream-based cosmetics, PEG compounds are used as thickeners, solvents and moisture-carriers. Depending on how they are manufactured, these ingredients can get contaminated with carcinogenic substances like ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Even when not contaminated, PEG compounds have been shown to cause skin irritation. 9.

PETROLATUM

Petrolatum is a petroleum jelly that is used in hair products to add shine and in lip balms, lip sticks, and moisturizers as a moisture barrier. The ingredient is often contaminated with PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), a known carcinogen, and can cause skin irritation and allergies in smaller doses. 10. SILOXANES Look for ingredients ending in “-siloxane” or “-methicone”, which are found most commonly in hair products and deodorants. Many of these ingredients have been found to impair fertility and cause hormonal disruptions.

11. SLS (SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE) This foaming agent can be found in cosmetics like cleansers, bubble bath, and shampoo. Many commercial varieties are contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane — known carcinogens.

Makes a Great Holiday Gift!

Perfect for the Whole Family!

12. TRICLOSAN This ingredient is found in antibacterial cosmetics like deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers. The ingredient is said to cause skin and eye irritations in the short run, and conditions like antibiotic resistance and hormonal disruptions with sustained use. In addition: Mineral oil is a very common ingredient in many face products, including serums. Mineral oil can cause can create a film over your skin that prevents your skin from naturally releasing any toxin buildup. Of course, this will lead to clogged pores, acne, oil buildup, and even some unsightly rashes. Additionally, mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum. 1,4 Dioxane is a very popular ingredient in many lotions and moisturizers — and it sounds like a scary chemical formula, right? This ingredient can also be listed on the ingredient list as PEG or any number of ingredients ending in “eth” or “oxynol.” According to the EPA, 1,4 Dioxane is a probable human carcinogen and is very easily absorbed by the skin, which is potential dangerous considering you are slathering it all over your face. You can now purchase apps to download to your phone that at your fingertips you can have this list handy. HB

HERBS&SPICES

Rosemary Awaken Your Mind and Your Tastebuds By Arielle Hawney

W

inter has arrived in the Southwest with force!

Bitterly cold temperatures and snow have me tucking inside and seeking all manner of warmth: rich foods, peppery scents, ways to heat the body from the inside out — and Rosemary is just the ticket! Recognized for centuries for its ability to boost cognition and memory, the Greeks called Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis) the “herb of remembrance.” Students braided rosemary into their hair before exams to stimulate their minds, and with dark mornings and winter sluggishness looming, the energizing effect of Rosemary is very appealing. Modern science corroborates what the ancient Greeks knew, and has found Rosemary to boost memory performance and quality, support alertness, intelligence and focus. Researchers are considering it for inclusion in Alzheimer’s medication. Reaping these benefits is as simple as integrating Rosemary into your diet — and there are so many wonderful ways to use it in the kitchen!

much hat-wearing and cold, dry air mixed with hand washing wreak havoc on our scalp and skin!). That said, here are two simple recipes for nurturing body care: Rosemary Hair Rinse: Simmer a few sprigs of Rosemary in a few cups of water for 20 minutes, then dilute the ‘tea’ in a 1:2 ratio with clean water and use after shampooing. Alternatively, place Rosemary essential oil into a carrier oil and rub into your scalp; let sit for a half hour before washing. Rosemary-Citrus Salt Scrub: Combine 1 cup salt, the zest of 1 orange or several lemons or limes, 1 tsp. de-stemmed Rosemary leaves in a food processor and pulse several times; then add 1/3 cup olive oil and pulse several more times. Place in an airtight container and use at will. Rosemary is also good for fighting bacterial infections and aiding digestive health, so much so that it can help prevent issues such as staph infection, ulcers and even colitis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

From meats to drinks to sweet and savory baked goods — Rosemary’s complex flavor profile enhances most anything! For winter cocktails try a Rosemary simple syrup. Add whole sprigs to the pan for your meats and roast vegetables. Use it in place of traditional skewers or toothpicks. Add it to your desserts— anything from ice cream to cookies to fruit tarts—and you will be surprised at how it puts a fresh spin on familiar treats!

To deter this winter season’s doldrums and keep your mind, skin and taste buds stimulated, reach for rosemary — the evergreen herb! HB

Rosemary has seasonally appropriate benefits:

BOOKREVIEW

N

obody smiles like your dog does.

It’s the best thing: you run out for nine hours or for just a second, it’s all the same to him. He’s happy to see you come back whenever. He wiggles, he brings you toys, he chortles, and then there’s that smile. No matter what happened to your day, your dog is the best part of it, and in Doctor Dogs by Maria Goodavage, you’ll see that she may be best for your health, too. Your Rover is a champion sniffer. Everything he sees gets inspected, smelled, and smelled again. It’s all interesting to him because his little nose has “up to three hundred million” olfactory receptors, as compared to your puny six million receptors. You might smell a swimming pool, says Goodavage, but a dog could “sniff out a teaspoon of a chemical in a million gallons of water….”

Doctor Dogs

For centuries, humans have known about those warm, wet noses and we’ve put them to work in hunting prey, contraband, and missing people. Relatively recently, science has also expanded a dog’s nose job into something that can enhance a life, or save one. Diabetic-alert dogs, for example, can smell when their owners’ glucose levels are either too high or too low, with a minimum of 80 percent accuracy. Dogs are taught to signal the problem to the patient, thus avoiding illness, coma, or even death; some have figured out by themselves to rouse parents or caregivers if the diabetic doesn’t respond. Knowing that their owners are about to face crisis, seizure-alert dogs are trained to warn for what’s coming. This gives sufferers a chance to find a safe place to sit or lie down and ride out the seizure or fainting spell — sometimes, with the dog on their legs or lap. Dogs also offer comfort, once the seizure is over. Research on cancer-scent dogs is ongoing, as is work with cardiac canines. Dogs offer mobility assistance for the handicapped, they can suss out deadly bacteria, and they help PTSD sufferers, the mentally ill, and autistic children. The only problem? It’s one that’s all too familiar to dog lovers: “Dogs never live long enough.” The memes say it best: We don’t deserve dogs. And if you’ve ever doubted that, then read Doctor Dogs. Partly because of ancillary information gotten while writing other canine-based books, and partly due to a possible health issue of her own, author Maria Goodavage takes a good look here at a bunch of good boys (and girls), and it’s delightful —– not only for the science behind what we’re only now learning, but because, well, dogs and dog tales and dog facts and the occasional cat. Reading it’s like sitting on a bench in a busy dog park: oh, the stories you’ll hear!

How Our Best Friends are Becoming Our Best Medicine

By the way, don’t discount your own pooch; Goodavage says that family pets have been known to spontaneously alert for illness, so give Puppers a skritch and pay attention. She might be a muttly M.D. but even if not, read on. Doctor Dogs will leave you smiling. HB

anines With A Cause, an organization originally started in Salt Lake City Utah, has recently expanded to parts of Nevada and California. The mission of Canines With A Cause is to harness the untapped potential of shelter dogs to heal emotional and psychological wounds, provide unconditional love, support and companionship, and give a new “leash” on life to those in need through assistance, therapy or service dog work. Making a difference—one person and one dog at a time. This non-profit helps to save three lives; shelter dogs, incarcerated veterans, and un-incarcerated veterans in need of assistance. Canines With A Cause finds shelter dogs with the potential to become emotional support or service dogs for veterans in need. Potential canine candidates go through a thorough behavior assessment, receive a health check, spay/neuter, and all vaccinations before entering the prison training program. Once selected, the dogs head to Warm Springs Correctional Center in Carson City, NV where a team of carefully selected incarcerated veterans train the dogs. Each handler must show exemplary behavior to be considered for this program. Once selected, the handlers are closely monitored by staff and a Certified Professional Dog Trainer. The incarcerated veterans gain teamwork skills, dog training education, build patience, increase communication and problem-solving skills, and maintain a high-level of responsibility. Through this work, many of these veterans (most of whom suffer from PTSD) experience a reduction in their symptoms as well. Dogs in this portion of the program live with a pair of veterans and receive constant attention and training until they can pass an extensive training test created specifically for this program;

The Vet Cadet Exam. Once the dogs graduate, they’re ready to meet potential veterans looking to adopt through Canines With A Cause Program. Veterans in the Canines With A Cause program meet and work with various dogs that have graduated from the prison program and are able to decide which dog will be the best fit for them and their lifestyle. Once they find their match, they continue with free training classes until they reach service dog status and beyond. The Canines With A Cause veterans train their dogs under the coaching of a Certified Professional Dog Trainer to help the veterans develop a strong trust and unbreakable bond between the veteran and dog. This, in turn often reduces their symptoms of PTSD. Participants are welcome to attend classes for as long as they’d like and often find a feeling of safety and comradery being with their fellow veterans. Canines With A Cause’s Sierra’s branch (Reno-Tahoe) is growing each day and wants to reach out to the community for veterans interested in joining our program. We’re also always in need of volunteers, foster families and donations. HB

At the Christmas Dinner Table By Ami Atkinson Combs and Sharon Strand Ellison Continued from Page 22

READER COMMENTS “Healthy Beginnings is a visually beautiful magazine and intellectually stimulating. I really look forward to every new issue and financially support, regularly, just under 10 or so businesses that advertise with you. I only knew they were there, existed, because they advertize in Healthy Beginnings. I love the articles explaining different issues relating to the businesses as well. I buy the books recommended in the articles too. It’s all so interesting”

TIP: Grandma said that if Tessa asked her grandfather politely, she was sure that he’d share. We’d recommend saying it more tentatively, “I think he’d probably be happy to share.” TIP: In a Limit-Setting prediction, the person making the prediction implements the consequence. “If you do X... then I will do Y.” Here, grandma told Tessa what she thought the consequence would be if Tessa asked politely. This is what we call a Challenge-Choice Prediction™ — because we simply let the other person know what we think or believe they will experience based on a certain choice they might choose to make. TIP: Putting extra emphasis on any of the words, such as “If you are rude, then I won’t answer you!” — or even body language like frowning, head shaking, shrugging — tends to prompt a defensive reaction. It is essential to make predictions in a relaxed tone and with a relaxed, gentle facial expression. For more information on how to make Challenge-Choice™ and Limit-Setting predictions, go topndc.com and click on “Learning” in the dropdown menu. HB
