2022-23 IMPACT REPORT

Cultivating Character through learning for lives of service to God

Thank you Dear Supporters of HDCH, The numbers in this report are an amazing testimony of God’s generosity, grace and love toward the children that He brings to HDCH to learn, grow and discover their calling in Him. These numbers tell a story of God’s faithfulness to us through you, the community that supports us with your time, your prayers, your presence and your resources. We remain committed as staff, Board, and Membership of HDCH to the founding vision of this school, in partnership with parents and churches, to raise our teenagers with sound biblical perspectives, to know and love and serve the Lord.

Our Vision

To see all HDCH students be a faithful presence in the communities they serve. The learning we do at HDCH is not just to develop knowledge and skills, but for our students to discover who God is calling them to be and how their gifts and calling connect to His work in the world to reconcile to Himself all things through Christ (Col 1:20). Thank you for coming alongside us so faithfully and generously to make this vision a reality in the lives of more students. We are greatly encouraged by your participation with us in this Kingdom work. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:23-25

the HDCH logo What does it represent? Our current logo was unveiled in May 2007. The following was published in the HDCH Alumni Magazine Summer 2007 Designed by Burlington graphic artist, David Jorritsma, the logo reflects the mission and diversity of our school. Our traditional school colours are red and white, and they are accented by gold in the logo. Central to the logo is the cross, and the overall dimensions of the logo reflect the importance of the cross of Jesus Christ. The four quadrants reflect the diversity of our school community. The formal H of Hamilton shows our history and tradition, as well as academics in the printed word. The italicized D of District represents action, athletics and the dynamic nature of education. The cursive C for Christian is the largest letter and it goes out of the box; it represents creativity in the arts as well. The digital H for High is from the world of technology, and shows that we embrace and redeem its possibilities; it is also the font we associate with a score board.

Service

Staff and students participated in a Peer to Peer fundraiser ~ Making Strides for Tuition Assistance.

There were two elective trips for students to participate in over their March break. • The HDCH Co-Impact team travelled to Nicaragua and worked on a number of construction projects. The trip was co-ordinated through Edu-Deo. • On the Europe trip, the group visited war memorials and two students laid a wreath at the Menin Gate (Ypres, Belgium) where a nightly ceremony has been held since the end of WWI.

In a friendly competition the four student participants were challenged to out-raise the staff participants, and they did!

Character

As a reward the entire student body received donuts.

Meet Tony! He is an International student. In Gr. 11, he turned his business project into a social enterprise to help develop trust amongst students at HD. He used the gifts he has to be a blessing and contribute to improving his school. He donated proceeds to make repairs to the boys washrooms. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” – 1 Peter 4:10

Excellence

Mrs. Oppertshauser was selected as a finalist for the Teacher’s Excellence Award. Mrs. O’s gifts were recognized by her peers across Canada and she was selected as the winner!

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS 2022-23

Cultivating character through learning for lives of service to God CONNECTIONS In our 2022-23 issues of Connections, we shared about Restorative Practice, Radical Hospitality and Project Based Learning. •

RESTORATIVE PRACTICE ~ HD’s staff engage daily in the shared work of witnessing students as they take on Christlike character. We start this on the first day of school and carry it through classroom work, sports, clubs and events, right through to the end of June. RADICAL HOSPITALITY ~ HDCH educators add radical hospitality to their teaching practice. Through radical hospital a teacher can engage a student who struggles to be in that space and help them to feel heard, accepts and an integral part of the classroom community. PROJECT BASED LEARNING ~ While working on projects, students are not only diving deep into the subject matter, they are also developing character, refining the habits of an HD graduate (compassion, creativity, resilience, competence and reflection) and seeing their place in God’s story. Visit hdch.org/connections/ to read the full issues.

OUR MISSION To cultivate character through learning for lives of service to God.

OUR VISION To see all HDCH graduates become a faithful presence in the communities that they serve.
