Aloha fellow racers and car enthusiasts! We hope you’re having a great summer - we know we are - we’re racing! We finished off June with Evolution Performance Driving School on the 29 & 30. I’ve already talked it up enough. If you were there, your times improved dramatically. And if you missed it don’t worry, we’ll be inviting them again next year - so stay tuned! July 21 was our 7th event of the 2013 RTP Championship Season. The weather in Hilo was perfect! Roy Whitney, our Assistant Regional Executive, is also the Chief of our SOLO operations. He had some great changes in store for us. Normally at our events a driver signs up and takes four (4) timed runs against the clock! And the rest of the time is spent working - or hanging out until the end of the day and hopefully getting in two (2) or four (4) unofficial “fun runs.” And the courses were getting longer and more “complicated.” With the new format, a driver gets to run in the morning and the afternoon. And because the course is shorter, things move along quickly for a total of eight (8) runs - 4 in the am and 4 in the pm! And in the afternoon the “am” course is run in reverse! The best time of the morning is added to the best time of the afternoon for a “daily total.” It works great! We had a total of 15 drivers at our July 21 event. Brandon Wilk, the points champion thus far, took the day off due to “mechanical issues.” I did the same - for the same reason. Michael Oates quickly took advantage of Brandon’s absence and stole the “top spot” - and 10,000 points. Raw times - Rick Bowers - 1st - (76.417) Michael Oates - 2nd - (76.637) Vernon Harvey - 3rd - (78.272) Allen Stueben - 4th - (80.896) and Craig Kadooka - 5th - (84.186) The RTP handicap shuffle - Michael Oates - 1st - (63.531) Vernon Harvey - 2nd - (64.485) Rick Bowers - 3rd - (67.322) David Smith - 4th - (67.621) and Luke McKay - 5th - (68.020) Even though Michael Oates is currently “points leader,” all Brandon Wilk has to do is take one more “top spot” for 10,000 pts in the next five events to be the 2013 points champion - and “Driver of the Year!” So come out and see for yourself! Or better yet, sign up, drive and see how honed your skills are. Remember, it’s driver skill (and “seat time” - practice!) as opposed to horsepower! But we still have five more events to go! Best 7 out of 12 events count! Drivers (no experience necessary!) can sign up at motorsportreg.com. Spectators are always our guests! Check us out (and results) on Facebook and at bigislandscca.org. “Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F. Brian Dorr, Regional Executive Big Island of Hawaii Region Sports Car Club of America

Race day, Sunday, August 4th was another doubleheader at Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Oahu with a full day of Stock Car Racing and HulaCross. The early August race for the stock cars also featured a Trophy Dash that gave racers that have not yet qualified, a last chance opportunity to qualify for the big August 31st, Labor Day Weekend Double-Header race without a “buy-in.” To compete in the August 31st race, racers must have participated in the June 23rd, July 14th or the August 4th race. A buy-in will be available for the Labor Day Weekend race but participants who buy-in on race day will start at the back of the pack for the heat race. Photographer Nick Latulip gives us a look at some of the action. The next race at the KRP Oval is August 31st followed by September points race on Sunday, September 22nd featuring Winged Sprints, Econo Sprints, Modified, Super Street, Mini Mods, Mini Stock, Mini Trucks and the Cruzer Bruzers. Gates open at 7am for both races, ticket booth opens at 7:30 with racing at 10am! General admission is $10, $15 with a pit pass, children 5 & under are free. rowing up in Las Vegas, I never really understood how we earned the moniker “The Ninth Island”, but now I know… As we drove our 48 Ford to Vernon and Rosie Pai’s home – I anxiously awaited what was expected to be the hot rod event of the summer – Vernon’s Hawaiian Luau for all of his new friends in Las Vegas. Pulling into the long horseshoe driveway, we were greeted by some old friends – Randy “Lugnut” our resident photographer and videographer’s 55 Chevy, Billy’s T- Bucket, Dick’s Studebaker, Jim’s 39 Chevy Coupe and so many more I hesitate to count. We entered the garage to greetings from Rita and Art Kam with traditional shell leis and a quick shove toward the shaved ice machine. It was 112 degrees out for heaven sakes, and I highly recommend the vanilla. With shaved ice in hand, we took it all in – hot rods, coconut leaves, fresh flowers, and leis aplenty. Our hosts, Vernon and Rosie, were quick to greet all of their new and old Las Vegas friends, with one friend getting the longest distance award – Vernon’s good friend, Blackie Gejeian. After a lot of hellos and hugs - I quickly made my way around the garage to introduce myself to the guest of honor – porky the whole roasting pig – and he was everything I expected and more. I also took

a moment to visit with the wonderful pig roasting crew and caterers from Aloha Specialties – Larry Yamagata and his crew. They looked to be a bit roasted by the end of the day themselves. I gazed at porky as long as I could possibly stand being out in the heat and made my way towards the island sound of Gary Haleamau and his four-person band. The singing and ukulele melodies brought me back to the islands in a moment, and to my surprise, I looked up and saw the beautiful swaying lilt of Paige, the hula dancer, sharing a traditional hula dance with the crowd. Just then, a call was heard around the yard, “Time to Eat”, and it was nothing short of the Fast and the Furious. Smooth and silky poi, melt in your mouth laulau, divine lomi-lomi salmon, a heaping bowl of chicken long rice, just to name a few dishes that tweaked the palate, and I had not even made it to the main entrée (porky did not disappoint). Two heaping plates later, as I sat listening to the music, enjoying the happiness always found with good friends, great food, and some damn nice hot rods – I realized a very valuable lesson. Who needs Southwest Airlines – when you have the Ninth Island and Vernon and Rosie Pai? Lisa Brady

I often say “there’s nothing prettier than Hilo on a sunny day!” The big Monkey Pod and coconut trees that line the Bay Front. Everything so green. And on this late August day it was picture perfect. Blue skies, light trade winds and Kamehameha the Great’s statue standing tall over Gary Kaho’ohanohano’s Hawaiian Street Warrior with its stunning white with bright green flamed paint, damn! On days like this that’s why we say “Lucky we live Hawaii!” Gary, a proud member of Pilau MC acquired the custom V-Twin in August of 2012 from Dado Kahaunaele, a feature ride in Motorhead back in June of ‘07 and proceeded to tear it down to the bare Down & Dirty Santee frame for a complete

resto. The Santee frame features a 35-degree rake and 3” stretched backbone. The billet front end is from G&K HD Unlimited in Hilo as is the gas tank and fenders. To get down & dirty you gotta have big horse power. This was achieved with a 110 cube RevTech, re-worked heads, cam,

Pro One ignition and drag pipes. The matching white paint on the heads and side cover is also a nice touch. A 3” Primo Brute V-Belt drive mates the power plant to the 5-speed trans. Hand and foot controls, along with the billet wheels and matching rotors are all PM units. The 200mm rubber in the rear is by Metzeler. The “stand out in the crowd” slick white paint is by the talented Eric Gomes of Aftermath Painting in Hilo while the beautiful flames and graphic work are by Ryan at Art Works also in Hilo both of which did the paint and graphics the first time around back in 2005. Gary recently won the Peoples Choice Award at the Run for the Cure, Poker Run and Car Show to benefit Theresa Asuncion in Waimea on Saturday, August 17th. Like I said, this Hawaiian Street Warrior, Kaho’ohanohano stands out in a crowd!

DragRACI

The NHRA State Championships and the National Dragster Challenge lit up Maui Raceway Park as the Valley Isle Timing Association presented its “Run for the Wally’s” on Friday and Saturday, August 16th and 17th. Friday night’s program featured the Hawaii State Championships with the Summit Racing Series. In the finals of the Summit Super Pro it was Erik Kollist over Scott Ehlert for the win while in the pint sized Jr. Dragsters it was Kylee Yamashita beating Aliyah Palad to the strip for the win in Friday night’s competition. Saturday nights program featured the National Dragster Challenge with 6 Wally classes which brought out some of the states fastest hot rods including Ken Sylva’s 7 second Wild Savage pick up and Kaleo Freitas with his turbocharged Suzuki drag bike. In final eliminations of Fast Gas it came down to Erik Kollist in his dragster taking on the quicker Magoo Akamine of Hilo in his Mustang. But Erik fouled out to hand Magoo the win and the Wally. The next race is set for September 21st with Jr. Dragster competition, Pro Classes and a Sports Compact Street Car Shoot Out! Gates open at 1:30pm with T&T at 2:30, Jr. Dragsters at 4:30 followed by Pro Classes, Sports Compact Shootout and the Burn Out King competition. General admission is $10, seniors and students $8 and keiki under 10 are free! For more info call the MRP Hotline @ 808-281-1273 or visit www.mrp.org

On Saturday, August 17th the 808MX/ATV Association held it’s 6th points race of the 2013 season at their motocross track at the Hilo Raceway. Mother nature was good to the racers as the sun shown it’s face for the first time in days. The previous days rain made the track conditions great and dust was surely not an issue. A great turn out of riders gave everyone non-stop, fast paced action with a good handful of riders that were also gearing up for the 49th Annual Labor Day State Race on Kaua’i. Word has it there are a couple dozen riders from the 808 filling a container and heading to the Garden Isle to compete at the longest consecutive running motorcycle race in American history! Check back with Motorhead in October for race results. Next race for the 808MX/ATV Association is on Saturday September 14th. Bring the family for some action packed races... Gates open @7:00am... Hot Rod SHOW

@ DE LUZ CHEVROLET

I

t was Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet on the big 4th of July weekend as DeLuz Chevy in Hilo held it’s annual Big Island Style Hot Rod Show at their Chevy dealership in Hilo on July 6th. Of course there was just about every make and model under the hot Hawaiian sun there to celebrate our independence. Eye candy galore filled every parking spot at the Chevy dealership. There were street rods, muscle cars, antiques, trucks and classic VW’s plus the De Luz ‘ohana had free hot dogs, apple pie and live music with the popular Hilo band, Ol’ School giving the crowds of people lots to see and do. There was also a chance to win a Small Block Chevy BBQ gas grill. That thing was cool, complete with zoomie headers, hi-performance intake, ignition and chrome valve covers. The event keeps getting bigger each year with more participants, entertainment and prizes. Can’t wait to see what De Luz Chevy does next year.

ong time Street Rodder Jimmy Paul of Kailua-Kona, who we featured back in 2005 with his beautiful red 1955 Chevy has added a very special ride to his collection with this 1932 Ford 3 Window Coupe. Last year Jimmy acquired this all steel Henry Ford, from a lovely lady named Alta Kelley from Sacramento, California. The car belonged to and was built by her late husband BJ Kelley who passed in 2009 at the age of 79. Jimmy tells us Alta says she has many great memories with the ’32 so Jimmy wanted to dedicate this article to the California couple. Alta told Jimmy she and BJ used to go to swap meets every chance they got looking for parts for the restoration. Alta says they bought 9 different fenders before finding the ones that were nice enough to make it to paint. The build took 9 years and was completed in 1988. They then enjoyed many years cruisin’ and taking in events.

HOTfox

The un-chopped coupe you see here is exactly how BJ finished the car with the exception of removing the spare tire by Jimmy’s son Tony Paul (pictured) of Mango Tree Alley in Panaewa to give it a hot rod look. Jimmy also had Benny Akamine perform his magic on the engine making the hot rod in disguise drivable.

YUP! The rather stock looking coupe with its Mclean wire wheels is a real sleeper with its BDS 671 Blower topped 350 Small block Chevy tucked under the stock hood. A 700R4 trans is connected to a Jag rear end and hang off a TCI chassis. Wilwood High Performance disc brakes at all 4 corners bring the sleeper to a quick halt. The original seats including the rumble seat have been stitched up in leather and cloth while a cassette player (hey, that was the technology back in 1988 when this hot rod was being built) and blower gauges are mounted in the custom overhead console. And as Jimmy puts it, “for your rumble seat convenience the rear window rolls down and cassette headsets are available for rumble seat passengers as well.” Nice! This fine coupe was once a dream for Alta and BJ, with many great memories made along the way. Now it’s Jimmy‘s turn to live the dream, and we thank you both for sharing it with Motorhead and our readers. Cherish the memories! Enjoy the ride!

Ride for the Cure

POKER RUN AND CAR SHOW On Saturday, August 17th, family and friends of Theresa Asuncion held the Ride for the Cure, Poker Run & Car Show at Waimea Park to benefit Theresa who is battling cancer. The benefit was a great success with more motorcycles participating in the poker run than I’ve seen in many a year. The hot rods and the VW clubs also came to support the event with 2 poker runs, one starting at Ellsworth’s Custom Cycles in Hilo and the other starting at Big Island Harley Davidson in Kona and ending at the Waimea park where many of the participants then had their rides on display in the car & bike show. There was a party bouncer and face painting for the keiki, live music with Mikiala Yardley, Red Eye Vibe and Waimea’s own Kiani! Thousand of dollars in prizes and raffles kept the crowd entertained and there was no shortage of ono food. Barrel steak, macadamia nut crusted Ono, beef curry, pork watercress, shoyu chicken, Aunty Kana’i’s famous BBQ pork teri, lau lau, wood fire stone oven pizza, and island grass fed burgers! Yum! Deserts included gourmet brownies, mochi, toffee, cookies and JJ’s Mini Orbits. Congrats to the People Choice show winners, AJ Lindsey -best 4x4 with his Dodge

You want action? Kalaeloa has action! Each month Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Oahu delivers heart pounding, nail biting, okole squeezing action with HulaCross! An action-packed race with racers running for points in flag-2-flag, wheel-2-wheel races that have the crowds screamin’ for more with each heat. So what is HulaCross? HulaCross or Hula-X is a play on words mixing the Hawaiian word for dance and the cross in RallyCross. HulaCross racing consist of continuous lapping on a mixed terrain. Beginning heats last for a timed period of lapping with the best times posted as the drivers spot time. Final Heats are determined by these spot times taken early in the day with the drivers best time as the final result. The course also features passing zones; tabletop jumps, and mud pits where the best is separated from the rest. It’s crazy fun and the crowds love it. Of course many of the HulaCross drivers at this early August race were already thinking about the big Labor Day weekend which would feature three major events packed into the monster weekend with Stock Car racing and HulaCross on Saturday and an island favorite Mud Bug on Sunday. Look for coverage in our October issue. The next double header for Stock Car and HulaCross is then set for Sunday September 22nd. Gates open at 7AM, Ticket Booth opens at 7:30, and Driver Registration starts at 8:30. Races to follow around 10AM. Run card is $40 per day.
