s ’ r o t i Ed note As we say goodbye to Spring and welcome Summer, not that there’s a big difference in the weather here in Hawaii, we also celebrate Fathers Day this month. And unlike Mothers Day, most dads aren’t hoping for a bouquet of flowers. A new 2013 Motorhead t-shirt maybe, hahaha shameless plug! Just not flowers please! But there are a lot of cool stuff to do with dads whether it’s taking in a sporting event or watching it in on TV, it’s remembering your dad that’s most important. Happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there! Summer also means there’s a lot more traffic on our roads and the keiki are out of school, so please be extra careful when you’re behind the wheel. My dad, a former Hawaii Police Officer used to tell me all the time Drive Defensively! He used to tell me you gotta keep an eye on every car on the road as if they are going to run into you or pull out in front of you, because chances are they will. Even if the car coming has they’re blinker on, wait till they actually start to turn before you pull out. They’re blinker maybe on by mistake. Watch for our keiki, our motorcyclist and please don’t drink and drive! Lets all remember this summer for all the right reasons! Enjoy the ride! -Nelson & ‘ohana

You could not ask for better conditions for the 808MX/ATV Associations 2nd race of the 2013 season on Saturday, April 13th at their motocross facility at the Hilo Raceway. Hats off to the track prep crew as well, the track is awesome for both the keiki and the adults. Also a Big Shout of Aloha to Bradda Skibs of Basic Image Inc., who back in 2003 started PakaLove.org with the clean up of Honoli’i Surf Park and has since led many great youth and community programs to teach our keiki the importance of Malama the Aina! Our Paka or Parks. Bradda Skibs and his film crew shot the February Season Opener and featured the 808MX/ATV Associations race on his TV segment of Living in Paradise. For those of you who missed it, see the video on their website. It was an invasion of the Dam in Boulder City, Nevada on Saturday, April 6th, with the 4th Annual “VW’s Invade The Dam” event at the beautiful Bicentennial Park hosted by Findlay Volkswagen of Henderson and a benefit for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. It was a full day in the park with the car show, music, a VW only swap meet, vendors, vendors and more vendors, raffle prizes and just plain fun, fun, fun! You can’t beat the venue with its beautiful lawn or the perfect weather. Many say it’s their “favorite Vegas air-cooled event!” There are lots of really nice local cars to see. Just about every year and model of Bugs, Busses, Ghia’s, Things and water-cooled including Jetta’s, Rabbits, Transports, Pick-Ups and Sciroccos! And of course the VW enthusiasts are always looking out for the good stuff and the rare stuff at the VW parts only swap meet. Great event to add to your VW calendar. Mahalo to the Vegas Lugnut for giving us a photo tour of the event.

MUDDRAGS KALAELOA Nick Latulip • Photographer

The Memorial Day Weekend was filled with non-stop racing action at Kalae-loa Raceway Park on Oahu including the finale event on Monday with the Robert Young Memorial MUD Drags! It was all-out racing with vehicles of all types racing side-by-side to the fin-ish in a pit of mud! And the event was everything it was advertised to be and more! “Super exciting, bring a towel!” There was lots of thrills and spills including the “Dash for Ca$h!” where the kids and the bigger kids, aka the adults run through the mud pits for a fist full of cash waiting at the finish line! Crazy fun! We sure hope there will be more Mud Drags at Kalaeloa. Based on the

Jim Jet Neilson is a world record holding drag racer who holds 4 land speed records which he used a jet propelled dragster to achieve. Jim now plans on setting a 5th world record in in Panama this September. Jim Jet Neilson who lived for many years in Hawaii, is going for the absolute Urban World Land Speed Record, it’s his goal to break the worldwide record of speed on rubber wheels and pavement. The current world record of 404 MPH for the fastest car on pavement was captured by Jim Neilson himself in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2004. Now, over 8 years later, a team consisting of Panamanians and Americans has combined their talents to race the most advanced pavement bound vehicle ever designed. For motorsports and speed freaks this will be the once in a lifetime event to be held in South America. Jim Jet Neilson’s 50,000-horse power jet car is powered by a General Electric J79 engine out of an F4 Phantom jet and releases a turbine of 50.000 horsepower and 20,000 lbs. of thrust to propel the Jet Car to record speeds of over 400 mph in less than 15 seconds and is capable of reaching speeds of over 700 miles per hour! The new Jet car weighs 6000 pounds, is 44ft long and has a 4stage after burner. Jim’s jet powered dragsters used to set the previous world records are powered by Westinghouse J-34 jet engines out of Navy Fighter jets and produce more than 18,000 HP. These dragsters put out 7500 pounds of thrust with 2 stage afterburners. The cars weight 2400 pounds, are 28 feet long, will run over 400 MPH and go 0-100 MPH in one second. Hawaii Motorhead Magazine will update you each month leading up to this amazing feat! You can follow along here in Motorhead or follow us on Facebook and Twitter and watch this historic event unfold.

Blinged Out

16 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | June 2013

Baggers are back, and in a big way. Slammed, bagged, stretched and lowered, tricked out baggers are everywhere! The Big Island’s Donald Morgan, a local contractor has been a Motorhead all of his life and his latest ride has also sparked a new business for himself. Bagger Bling! Cool baggers need bling, so after Donald purchased the Harley in October of 2010 in Honolulu, from Bong, a tattoo artist in Kalihi, and tricked it all out, he started designing custom Bagger Bling. The first run of 3 different bag latch designs will be ready for market soon. Pictured here are proto types of 2 designs. The Bagger Bling latches will come in color contrast milling or chrome, and will also be available in different colors. Made of 3/8 inch 6061 billet aluminum, these latches are 17” long by 2 1/2” wide. Also in the works for your bags are billet flames and tribal flames. Bagger Bling floorboards and even some sick two-piece swords for your forks where you can mix and match the blades and handles are also in the mix. Donald says, “ It’s hard to explain but the swords will look sharp and nasty.” Donald’s blinged out bagger is powered by a Harley 96 cubic inch with a 640 S&S gear driven cam, Big Sucker air filter, true duel Rinehart Exhaust and a Cobra digital fuel processor. The extra ponies are hooked up to a Harley 6 speed trans. The bagger has been lowered both front and rear with an Arnott air ride system with Bilstein 12” shocks in the rear. The wheels are Roland Sands, contrast cut with matching rotors and 160/80/16 rubber in the rear and 90/90/21 up front. Paul Yaffe 12” Monkey bars with Avon spiked grips up front for control while a Klock Werks 8” wind shield and T-Bag windshield bags help keep the bugs out of Donald’s teeth. Tucked nicely in the dash is a stock Harman Kardon stereo with Hog Tunes amp with Hog Tunes 6” speakers and tweeter pods pushing out about 285 watts. A set of Arlen Ness, LED running lights light the way. The rear fender is a Bad Dad Summit unit with flush led lighting and enclosed license plate. The front fender is a Kendall Johnson signature series. The beautiful paint is a House Of Kolor Candy Apple red and the airbrush and stripping is the handy work of Kawa in Kona, who also designs all of Bagger Bling’s billet pieces. I really dig the Corbin Keyed Hollywood solo seat, with baby alligator sides, and tribal tattoo in red thread. Slammed, bagged and blinged out, Donald’s bagger is ready for action. Keep an eye out for more details on his new line of accessories from Bagger Bling, and you’ll be ready for action too! The Boulder City Cruisin Association held it’s Annual “Best Dam Car Show” in conjunction with the Rotary’s “Best Dam BBQ” Challenge on May 24 and 25, Memorial Day Weekend at the beautiful Bicentennial Park just 15 minutes from, you guessed it, the Hoover Dam. So much to see and do for the entire ‘ohana from the car show filling the park with everything from classics to muscle cars to the BBQ challenge which is a Nevada State Championship event with $12,000 on the line! There was also lots of ono festival food and a big market vendor section where you could see, taste, try and buy! Photos by R.B. Ventura Aloha fellow racers and car enthusiasts! We’ve invited Evolution Performance Driving School to hold a two day school on June 29 & 30 in Hilo - so mark your calenders & sign up soon! Spots are going fast!!! Evolution is a premier driving school that teaches it’s students how to be FASTER! This course definitely teaches you the “skills” needed to be a safe driver on our roads. I took the course three years ago, last year and I’m taking it again - it’s that good! If you want to improve your driving technique and acquire new skills - this is the coarse! Regardless of experience this course builds upon existing skills, while introducing new ideas to improve one’s times. Students both ride & drive with Evolution trained national championship drivers to learn where they are fast and where they need to improve. Small student teacher ratio of 6:1 (or less!) insures quality instruction time. Also, because of the personal attention, instructors can “individualize” the coarse for you. Combined with race proven skills, concepts and techniques, this course will improve the performance of all drivers on both road and track. The two days are divided into Phase One & Two. Students are given twenty four (24) runs per day! At our regular monthly races - we only get 4 runs (and maybe 2 - 4 “fun runs”) - so this school definitely gave LOTS of track time with instructors on an individual basis. Price for the two day school is $450 (for non SCCA members) and includes lunch. Phase One & Two can be taken separately. For more information or to sign up, you can contact Mike “Junior” Johnson @ (804) 380-0091 or go to evoschool.com May 19 was our 5th event of the 2013 RTP Championship Season and the Hilo weather could not have been more perfect! We had a good turnout with 23 drivers and some new (and old!) faces. Mike McCrary was back with his yellow 1970 Ford Mustang and Roy Whitney traded in his venerable Mini Cooper S for a red 2006 BMW M Roadster! And a big “Aloha!” to Felipe & Akiko Martin in their ‘89 BMW 325i - their first time - grins from ear to ear - they’re definitely “hooked!” And Akiko already has intentions of beating her husband’s time (60.216 - RTP.) She came really close (60.921 - RTP) - and there’s always next time. And let’s not forget Jackie Pualai Johnson in her ‘06 Scion xB - another smiling convert - E komo mai! Brandon Wilk stormed through the course with a vengeance, taking FTD (Fastest Time of Day - 61.158) and top RTP (Racer’s Theoretical Performance) adjusted time - 51.250 - which earned him 10,000 RTP points. Allen Stueben in his 2005 Lotus Elise placed a close 2nd with a raw time of 61.353 - a mere 2/10 of a second apart - and a RTP time of 52.702 - enough to keep his second place position. For raw time: 3rd- F. Brian Dorr- 62.098 4th- Rick Bowers- 63.979 5th- Michael Oates- 65.325 & 6th- Vernon Harvey- 66.982 Now for the adjusted RTP “shuffle”- 3rd- Michael Oates- 54.154 4th- F. Brian Dorr- 54.708 5th- Vernon Harvey- 55.185 & 6th- David Smith- 55.526 And a special “Mahalo” to Rick Bowers, who offered me his Miata to drive. My Miata “stay broke” and without a “ride” I would not have been able to compete. Thanks again Rick! Here’ the link for full race results https://docs.google.com/file/d/12xTyz JV8lmRMJxu_g6IVQaNNusul1Q_B6Fnr-QKCeqsrWVVXPXbi0bhFU xFN/edit?usp=sharing So how does Brandon do it? Remember he’s driving a 1999 VW Jetta TDi. So far he’s accumulated 50,000 out of 50,000 possible points! Great driving??? Pure luck?? An intimate knowledge of the course (remember, he is our course designer!) Or a secret pact with the devil? Come out and see for yourself! Or better yet, sign up, drive and see how honed your skills are. Remember, it’s driver skill (and “seat time” - practice!) as opposed to horsepower! But we still have seven more events to go! ROD & KUSTOM Reunion

The 14th Annual “Greaser’s Rod & Kustom Reunion” in Henderson, Nevada was another great success this year with a great turn out and funds raised for the Basic High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program. The show’s organizers, Greg “Greaser” and Patty Bashaw, said every dime raised from fees and raffles goes to Basic’s cadets. That’s “Greaser” pictured with his way cool flamed sled. The Mystic Lodge and Casino, also known as My Casino on Boulder Highway, hosted the event once again this year and also donated a portion of the food and beverage sales to the JROTC program. The event started on Friday night, April 5th with a Friday Night Cruise Nite with 50’s music, raffles, food, awards and special trophies. On Saturday along with hundreds of the coolest rides on the planet, there was more great food, merchant vendors, tons of raffles and more great music. Gotta love those “Elvis” Stars & Stripe travel chairs! A big Mahalo to all the sponsors, supporters, participants and show goers for your continued support of this great event. Hope to see you all next year!

SANDDRAGS ©Nick Latulip Photos

With the lack of a asphalt drag strip on Oahu, Kalaeloa Raceway Parks Sand Drags has been a big hit with racers looking for an adrenaline rush and fans who are blown away by the sight of big horse power cars, trucks, motorcycles and quads throwing roost sometimes 20 plus feet in the air. Saturday, May 19th’s Sand Drags Trophy Race didn’t disappoint! 4 rounds of racing including the popular Unlimited class for those big horsepower rails, roadsters and buggies. The final round of racing is the Trophy Dash where 1st and 2nd place finishers in each class race for a special trophy. Mahalo to KRP photographer Nick Latulip for all the great photos. The track, that has been recently lengthened to 300 feet is equipped with a full tree and timing system and has prompted many former drag strip racers to modify their vehicles to get in on the action, while its also given many bikes, quads, jeeps and buggies a new venue! If you haven’t caught the action for yourself yet the next race is set for Sunday, June 2nd with gates opening at 9am. For all the great motorsport happenings at Kalaeloa Raceway Park, visit them on-line at www.krphawaii.com and we’ll see you at the next event!
