s ’ r o t i Ed note I love the Holidays! It’s my favorite time of the year. But I also love spring! Even though the weather doesn’t change much with the seasons here in Hawaii, spring means an all-new season of drag racing, motocross, stock car racing and car shows. The NHRA Mello Yello drag racing series kicks off on February 14 -17 at Pomona with headline news of Brittany Force, becoming a professional NHRA Racer this season. The 26-yearold Brittany, unlike her two sisters Courtney and Ashley and her legendary father, 15 time World Champion John Force will not be behind the wheel of a Funny Car! Instead she will make her professional debut in her Castrol sponsored Top Fuel dragster with dad’s 2012 crew chief Dean “Guido” Antonelli tuning her new ride! Mike Neff, who drove a funny car for JFR these past few years, will return to tune John’s Castrol funny car. JFR will race 3 funny cars this season (15 time Champion John Force, 2010 Champion Robert Hight and 2012 Rookie of the Year Courtney Force) and Brittany Force in her Top Fuel dragster. It will be the first time in JFR history that all entries will be driven by a member of John’s immediate family. Once again the NHRA series will include 2 dates at Las Vegas Motor Speedway the first being April 5 – 7. Keep it here for details on how you can win a trip for 2 to Las Vegas with Motorhead to see it live! Enjoy the ride! -Nelson & ‘Ohana

WILLYS

Vernon Pai

of Oahu is the proud owner of this super sweet ’41 Willy’s he acquired from Honolulu’s Dexter Kekua last year. You may remember seeing it in our September 2012 issue of Hawaii Motorhead Magazine with our coverage of the Nevada “Super Run” event where Vernon and a Hawaii group of about 15 rodders made a big splash at Sothern Nevada’s largest car show by not only grabbing lots attention but by bringing home the “Peoples Choice” award with the bright orange Willy’s as well. World renowned photo journalist Bob McClurg did this photo shoot and story with the former owner before he sold the ride to Vernon. “I’ve always wanted to own a 1941 Willys,” says Honolulu, Hawaii mechanical contractor Dexter Kekua. “My dad was an auto painter at the outbreak of WWII in Honolulu, and he had a real one. He and my uncle secured a contract to paint Willys Jeeps camaflouge for the war effort which were subsequently distributed in the Pacific Arena. In appreciation for his efforts, Willys Motors sent him a brand new 1941 Willys Americar in early 1942. He kept that car until 1958. My first recollection of the Willys was that it was painted U.S. Army Olive Drab. However, in the Post WWII years, he thought that was kind of in-appropriate, and painted the car sky blue!”

Kekua continued. “Dad sold the coupe in 1958, and I was too young to realize what a time honored classic it really was, - or so it would become. My dad probably didn’t know either. I remember had a lot of phone calls on that car. The years went by, and Kekua busied himself getting an education, raising a family, and building up one of the largest mechanical contracting firms on the Pacific Rim, namely Heide & Cook, Ltd. With success came the toys; first there was a ’68 Camaro, - Kekua is a member of the Hawaiian Island Camaro’s, - then there was a ’67 Chevelle. Then along came a ’31 Model-A. But Dexter still wanted his Willys. “I actually bought two different fiberglass cars, but I wasn’t at all satisfied with either. Then I ran into Dennis Taylor at the 2005 NSRA Show in Louisville, KY. We hit it off right away and I knew that this was the guy who would be able to fulfill the dream of a lifetime!” Starting with the chassis, car builder Taylor constructed a dual boxed rail, 105-inch wheelbase chassis with a kick up in the rear to accommodate a sizeable Fab 9 sheet metal rear end equipped with 3.50:1 Strange Engineering gearing, Moser 36-spline axles and 11-inch Wilwood Engineering disc brakes. A pair of Air Ride Technologies air bags, and chrome plated Bilstein gas charged shocks are also part of the equation, and a set of 20x12-inch Billet Specialties: Stiletto wheels wrapped with P285/20x20-inch BF. Goodrich KDW-2’s finalize things. Also on board is a mirror polish 22-gallon Rock Valley gas tank. Front suspension on the coupe consists of Heidt’s Hot Rod Shop tubular upper and lower control arm setup complete with a set of Heidt’s 2-inch dropped front spindles, ART air bags and chrome plated Bilstein gas charged shocks . Like in the rear, a pair of 11-inch Wilwood Engineering front disc brakes do the stopping. This setup also makes use of Wilwood Engineering master cylinder and Flaming River rack-and-pinion-steering gear. The steering column is an Ididit, and rolling stock consists of a set of 18x10-inch Billet Specialties “Stiletto” wheels rolling on P215/35x18-inch BF. Goodrich KDW-2’s. Powering the ’41 is a Street & Performance-prepared GM LS6, the same engine used in the 2004 Z06 Corvette. The story goes that Street & Performance CEO Mark Campbell built the engine and installed it into a 1957 Chevrolet to be able to compete in the 2005 Mother’s Car Show Series. At the end of the year, GM insisted that Mark switch to the new LS2, and Kekua was able to buy the engine outright from him. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Street & Performance show engine if everything weren’t polished and chromed. Campbell pulled out all the stops on the aluminum small-block by polishing both the block and heads. Statistically, the 5.7L LS6 also features a GM Performance Parts .570 roller cam and 1.7 ratio rocker arms. Bolted up top is a chrome plated Ligenfelter intake, a Street & Performance air cleaner, and a very trick set of billet-aluminum “Willys” signature valve covers. You’ll also note that this LS6 is “coil less” as the coils have been re-located behind the inner fender panels for a smoother look. Engine cooling is handled by a polished LS6 aluminum water pump and a Be Cool Cooling Module, while the exhaust is handled by a pair of Street & Performance four tube headers dumping spent gases back through a thermal coated Dennis Taylor/Flowmaster exhaust system.Backing all of this up is the original 2005 Pontiac GTO 4L65E automatic overdrive transmission Campbell used in his Tri-Five using a Lokar shifter. Of course, Dennis Taylor’s “New Wave” Willys bodies are a far cry from the original cars. Taylor’s take on the bulbous Willys Americar Series was to smooth it out as much as possible while still re taining the original Willys “look.” In order to do that, he chopped the top two-inches. He

Other modifications include pie cutting the hood and grafting the lower section to the fenders. Taylor also installed a really trick set of flush mount LED tail lights. Then when all the bodywork was done, Dennis sprayed the coupe in PPG Vibrant Orange. The crowning touch was some killer flaming skull artwork and striping by Eric Campbell from American Chopper fame. “Here’s a funny story. We had gone through several paint schemes without coming to a consensus…Finally one day Dennis wife Debbie suggested if Dennis and I could not decide by the next day-we were going to paint the Willys ORANGE. FOUR HORSEMEN MC Bike Show & Benefit

The Four Horsemen MC held its 2nd annual “New Years Bike Show & Pancake Breakfast” at the Old A’s pavilion in Kona on the Big Island on Saturday, January 26. There were lots of sweet rides both inside and out as bikers came from all over the Big Island for the great fundraiser that benefits the Hawaii Island United Way. I saw patches from Koa Puna, Red Legion, Midnight Riders, Honaunau Head Hunters, Pilau, Ali’i’s of Hawaii and the Sober Riders MC just to name a few. Mario and the crew from Big Island Harley Davidson were on hand with a Harley display booth and all the cool new Harley apparel for 2013. 808 Fifty clothing debuted some new t-shirt designs and Christine Gallagher aka “The Riding Realtor” aka “The Knife Lady” brought the mother load of knives with everything from cutlery to hunting and survival knives.

There’s a first for everything! Your first pet, your first kiss, your first car, and for Hilo’s Cisco Pabass, his first bike! And it’s a bit Twisted! Cisco started out with boxes of parts and pieces and a vision of what he wanted his first to be. The project hit a few bumps in the road with a local builder so he took the bike to Chris Calicdan, owner/builder of Twisted Bike Worx in Hilo to fix some problems they were having, cause we all know everything don’t always go together like it suppose to, and to finish the ride he had dreamed up for a few years! Cisco says the frame is from Empire Cycles in Australia and features a 7” stretch and a 45-degree rake. Chris needed to modify the frame a bit to accommodate the taller motor, a fully polished Ultima 127 cube El Bruto, a real beast with its 4.25” Bore, 4.5” Stroke and 10.2:1 compression putting out 140 Rear Wheel Horse Power out of the box! The only modification is the Twisted Bike Worx velocity stack and high dollar Martin Brothers pipes. The transmission and open belt drive are also Ultima units and Chris modified the back half for the DNA sproter set up. The front end is a 41mm Wide Glide with custom Twisted handlebars, DNA triple trees and hand controls. The forward controls are also by DNA.

Chris fabricated the cool ignition cover and speedo pod, stretched the rear half of the gas tank now that he modified the top frame tube to make room for the taller motor, and fabricated the rear fender and struts that move with the swingarm allowing the fender to sit just a few hairs above the 300 Avon rear tire and chrome tribal billet rim. Chris also made the Twisted Bike Worx custom fiberglass seat pan that’s been covered in snakeskin by Thompsons Upholstery in Hilo. The frame and all the tins were then sent to Abalos in Hilo for the beautiful Candy Apple paint. Greg Kobayashi did the super nice silver leaf, pin striping and lettering. Chris debuted Cisco’s ride at the Four Horsemen’s Annual Bike Show and Pancake Breakfast (pages 12 -15 in this months issue) and brought home the hardware for Best Custom. For Chris it’s all in a days work, but for Cisco, I’m sure he’ll never forget his first! Nelson Parker photos & story.

boards, grass shacks and sandy beaches worked into the displays. In the Suede Palace and outdoors there were hundreds more! Outstanding rat rods, project cars, streetcars and a lot of just hanging out. Its annual “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award, the most prestigious honor in the field, was captured this year by Hot Rod collector John Mumford and his 1927 Track T Roadster. The car has quite a history beginning as a project car for various owners in the 80’s including NHRA Top Fuel Champion, Kelly Brown but was never really finished until John took it to famous builder Roy Brizio. The car combines Model T parts with a Model A body. Powered by a Ford Flathead V-8 topped with an Ardun overhead valve setup made by Zora Arkus-Duntov, the father of the Corvette. Only 8 sets of these heads were ever made and Mumford owned 2 of them! 8th Annual

BUGS At The Park

Every November Volkswagen enthusiasts converge on Waimalu Elementary School for the annual Vintage Volkswagen Club of Hawaii “Bugs at the Park” event. Whether they’re old school VW enthusiasts or just recently caught the Bug fever, Volks folks came together and checked-out each other’s prized possession or latest acquisition. “Youngins” and Papa’s alike mingle like it was cool – air-cooled. You could feel the VW electric in the air. The aura of nostalgic VW hit me that one day reminded me of my old school ’67 Karmann Ghia coupe. Tony Smith from the Big Island (pictured with the classic bicycle) never misses this event. The camaraderie amongst all in attendance was just an awesome experience. One would bump into a high school classmate to two, or would meet a new friend. Again, the common passion called VW just brought us all together. All types could be found at this gathering. There were three Splits owned by Roy Dunlap, Lance Patigayon, and Robert; Van Yoshikawa’s show winning ’55 Oval 3-fold vintage ragtop now with an Okrasa motor; Shane Fivella in his gold German Baby; Greg Campbell in his freshly upholstered, by Waipahu Upholstery, ’65 Karmann Ghia, licenced ’65 KG’; Tony Fajota in his ’67 21-Window; John Reyno’s raised ’73 Thing licensed ‘SURF-RI’ just to name a few. Every year this annual event just keeps growing into a much “funner” event for all. OB-1 the Magician was entertaining the keiki. Andy Perreira on the mic giving away prizes to the winning raffle ticket owners left and right and the Bikes at the Park contest was a big hit. This was a non-stop action filled event. On this Veteran’s Day Holiday, as a Veteran myself, and in honor of those who served, serving in garrison, serving in harms way, and ultimately who gave their lives for our dear country, I draped a 9.5’ x 5’ flag on my 21-Window Bus. Not an ordinary flag; this flag encased a transfer case of one of our fallen

The Hustlers Car Club of Las Vegas held its inaugural New Years Day “Cruise In” at the Clarion Hotel on January 1st with about 50 or so hot rods and classics cruising in for a good time had by all. We think this event will catch on, as there is really nothing else going on for car community on New Years day. There was a nice variety of street rods, hot rods, classics and muscle cars on hand including a real nice Gold 1965 Dodge Charger and even some old Cadillac’s. How about a 1954 Fleetwood! Hustlers Inc. also had your chance to win a brand new motor that’ll be given away at its 4th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Car Show coming up on Saturday, March 16 at the Water Street District in Henderson in conjunction with the 47th Annual Sons of Erin St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival. Get your entry forms online at www.hustlerslasvegas.homestead.com Get a move on for the first 100 registered get a free t-shirt and goodie bag!
