SPRING2014 SOCIAL MEDIA We do a massive amount of marketing via the internet and fully utilise social media sites on a daily basis. We run lots of competitions there so be sure to check our page when you’re next online. Some shows are booked at the last minute and therefore need to be publicised immediately, and the most efficient way of doing this is via Facebook and Twitter. TWITTER COMPETITION You will see hashtags for all our shows in this brochure in the pricing banner at the bottom of the show listing and we will be awarding vouchers and prizes randomly each week to anybody using these on Twitter. SELLING TICKETS If you have a concert or event you are organising in 2014 then why not get us to sell all the tickets for you? The biggest headache of putting on an event must be

the selling of the tickets and for a small percentage we can remove that for you and give your marketing campaign one phone number and web address for all your customers to purchase their tickets from. We are open 9.30am until 5.30pm every weekday and have a ticket sales system online that can be available 24/7. This season we are selling the tickets for the Morriston Choir concert being organised by Llanidloes Rotary Club and held at the Welsh Methodist Chapel. Call us on 01686 614555 or email marketing@theatrhafren.co.uk. If you wish to discuss this further. ONLY MEN ALOUD WITH SPECIAL GUEST SOPHIE EVANS Following their recent shake-up, Only Men Aloud, the Classical Brit Award winners who came to prominence as the nation’s favourite choir with their triumph in BBC’s Last Choir Standing is taking their new ensemble of eight singers, along with a very special guest, the stunning West End and World’s End artist Sophie Evans, to venues across the length and breadth of Wales. After 13 years and some incredible experiences – from winning BBC’s Last Choir Standing and the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special to scooping a Classical Brit Album of the Year Award and performing to a global TV audience as the Cauldron was lit at the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, Only Men Aloud has undergone a regeneration with a fresh line-up and a new, more individual style that suits their personalities - but with the same popular appeal that has wowed fans across the country.

Over the years the Wales-based male choir has varied in size according to requirements, sometimes having 20 men on stage performing a varied repertoire that covers everything from Welsh traditional music and Opera to Tom Jones and Coldplay. Tim and colleagues in OMA are also busy with the Aloud charity which is developing opportunities for Welsh youngsters in Only Boys Aloud and the Wales Millennium Centre Only Kids Aloud Chorus to discover the joys and benefits of choral singing. This has already seen some remarkable achievements, including OBA coming third in the final of Britain’s Got Talent and recording a Top 40 Christmas album. CYMRU A NUBIA.

WALES AND NUBIA.

DWY GENEDL. UN BENNOD GYFFREDIN.

TWO LANDS. ONE SHARED LEGACY.

Mae Cenhedloedd Dan Ddyfroedd yn daith gerddorol sydd yn cynnwys y gantores Siân James a’r gitarydd Gai Toms ochr yn ochr â Nuba Nour, drymwyr ffrâm traddodiadol o’r Aifft, fydd yn cychwyn yng Nghymru ym mis Mawrth 2014.

Debuting in Wales in March 2014, Dammed Nations is a music tour featuring singer Siân James & guitarist Gai Toms alongside traditional Nubian frame drummers Nuba Nour from Egypt.

Mae penderfyniadau gwleidyddol o’r 1960 au yn parhau i lunio’r byd cyfoes. Yn Cenhedloedd Dan Ddyfroedd, bydd lleisiau dwy gymuned sydd yn ymddangos nad ydynt yn gysylltiedig, yn uno ar lwyfan i gofio tynged y pentref Capel Celyn yng ngogledd Cymru - a gollwyd i ddyfroedd Cronfa Dryweryn - a’r mamwledydd Nubian traddodiadol yn Aswan, yr Aifft, a foddwyd ar gyfer adeiladu Argae Uchel yr Arlywydd Nasser. Bydd y cyngherddau yn cynnwys setiau unigol gan bob un o’r artistiaid ynghyd â set gydweithredol arbennig yn cynnwys caneuon am Dryweryn a sefyllfa bryderus y bobl Nubiadd.

Political decisions and divisions from 1960s continue to shape the current world and in Dammed Nations, voices from two seemingly unconnected communities unite on stage recalling the fates of the village of Capel Celyn in North Wales - lost to the waters of the Tryweryn Reservoir - and the traditional Nubian homelands in Aswan, Egypt drowned with the construction of President Nasser’s High Dam. The concerts will feature solo sets by each of the artists along with a special collaboration featuring songs about Tryweryn and the continuing plight of the Nubian people.

Wedi ei noddi’n rhannol gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Llywodraeth Cymru, a’r Loteri Genedlaethol. Supported by the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government and the National Lottery.

CALL MR

ROBESON A LIFE, WITH SONGS.

Written and Performed by Tayo Aluko, With Live Piano Accompaniment Directed by Olusola Oyeleye, Designed by Phil Newman

‘First-rate ... an admirable introduction to a great pioneering performer’

The Guardian

“They say I’m meddling in the foreign affairs of the United States Government. Now, that’s too bad, ‘cause I’m going to have to continue to meddle...”

Paul Robeson is a world famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When over the years he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career. This roller coaster journey through Robeson’s remarkable and eventful life highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features much fiery oratory and some of his famous songs, including a dramatic rendition of Ol’ Man River. Tayo Aluko revives one of the 20th Century’s most impressive but overlooked figures in this powerful, compelling tour-de-force performance, which was seen at New York’s Carnegie Hall in February 2012, and in London’s West End in October 2013. Perfformiad o fywyd a chaneuon Paul Robeson. Age recommendation: 12+ No violence, bad language, nudity or sexual content. Show length: 80 minutes (no interval).

Through intricately crafted and affecting choreography this new work explores the dark, turbulent, and sometimes mythical world of Evans’ fictional village of Manteg. Carmen

FORTHCOMING EVENTS 2014

Georges Bizet’s

CONDUCTOR: Nicholas Cleobury DIRECTOR: Jonathan Miller TRANSLATION: Rory Bremner

DESIGNER: Nicky Shaw LIGHTING DESIGNER: Declan Randall ORCHESTRATION: Stephen McNeff

Following a highly acclaimed version of Britten’s Albert Herring at Hafren last year and fresh from their spring tour of Handel’s Acis & Galatea, Mid Wales Opera returns to celebrate their 25th year on the road with Georges Bizet’s Carmen directed by Dr Jonathan Miller. MWO’s exciting new production of a much loved favourite of the operatic repertoire, Carmen is directed by world famous opera director and polymath Dr Jonathan Miller with MWO’s Artistic Director Nicholas Cleobury conducting.

What the press and audiences say about MWO…

Bizet’s masterpiece is the tale of the seductive temptress – Carmen – who lures the innocent Don José and whisks him off on a journey of love, loss, betrayal and jealousy, ending in tragedy when, in a torrid rage, Don José kills Carmen in one of the most dramatic moments in stage history. This rousing new production - performed in English in a translation by Rory Bremner “… Bremner’s fruity, crispy translation worked a treat” The Guardian – features classics such as the Habanera and The Toreador Song in a new performing version of Bizet’s legendary score by world renowned opera and music theatre composer Stephen McNeff, commissioned specially for the Mid Wales Opera Chamber Orchestra. A brand new production of a much loved classic, this crowd-pleasing favourite with live orchestra, is a not-to-be-missed piece of theatre: Mid Wales Opera’s Carmen - a unique treat for the whole family – with world premiere performances at Hafren next autumn…

On Albert Herring

“This small whistlestop touring outfit has done it again – out-pointing its bigger brothers as decisively as it did with its terrific productions of Falstaff and The Tales of Hoffmann.” Rupert Christiansen, **** The Telegraph 2013

“MWO production really brought it to life and the sound from both the cast and the orchestra was wonderful.” Audience Member 2013

RHAYADER ART GROUP Early February - Mid April 2014

Rhayader Art Group, now in its 8th year, was founded in 2005 with the aim of providing a focal point for local artists in Rhayader, and the surrounding district, to meet and enjoy art. Meetings are held weekly at the ‘Old School’ in Cwmdauddwr. The structure is based on informal painting and drawing sessions, with occasional tutored sessions, DVD viewings, and outdoor sketching trips. Sharing ideas on subjects, techniques and materials, and also getting ‘fresh eyes’ to view your work is very much the order of the day. A wide range of media is used. Meetings are held each Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 4pm, with a 5 week mid-winter break. We currently have 12 members, and welcome new members regardless of

experience or ability. Two exhibitions are held annually, one in the Old School, Cwmdauddwr, and also at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre. Additional exhibitions are arranged by invitation and this year are delighted to have work in The Radnorshire Museum, Llandrindod wells and of course here at Hafren, Newtown.

LORRAINE KITT Mid April - End June 2014

Lorraine Kitt is an artist living and working in Mid Wales. She studied at Watford College of Art and worked as a freelance designer, also teaching at I.L.E.A. evening classes at Hampstead. After opening a studio/gallery in Kensington with her artist husband, Alwyn Kitt, they worked there for a couple of years before moving to Wales and opening The Welsh Gallery in Abergavenny, showing work by about twenty of Wales’ painters and sculptors. Although Lorraine has always painted all subject matters, Welsh and more recently, French landscapes have always been her preferred choice. Working in watercolours and also in oils on linen panel boards is a traditional method that she favours over canvas as it provides a more durable surface. Lorraine also has a selection of limited edition prints available to buy from her website, www.lorrainekittpaintings.com.
