A CO-PRODUCTION WITH OPERA THEATRE COMPANY

By Benjamin Britten and Eric Crozier Opera Canolbarth Cymru yn perfformio Albert Herring gan Benjamin Britten. Mid Wales Opera returns in 2013 to celebrate the centenary of the birth of one of the country’s greatest composers - Benjamin Britten. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to enjoy Britten’s classic comic depiction of village life, Albert Herring. It is time for the sleepy village of Loxford to choose a May Queen but none of the local girls quite fit the bill… So now all eyes focus on Albert, from the greengrocer’s, pure and innocent as they come. Surely the perfect candidate to be the village’s first May King? But the hapless Albert is slipped a little something into his victory glass of lemonade and suddenly things take a turn for the worse… One of the composer’s most perfect gems - witty and irreverent – this comedy opera is bound to bring a smile to your face… Cyngerdd cerddorol digri sy’n olrhain hanes Albert Herring.

Jack

Trevor Marriott is a retired British Police murder squad detective, and leading Ripper expert, who since 2002 has been conducting a cold case investigation into The Whitechapel Murders of 1888 which were attributed to a fearsome killer who came to be known as Jack the Ripper. His ongoing investigation would disprove the accepted theory that the killer, after killing some of the victims, removed vital organs from their bodies at the crime scenes. Further investigative work would uncover secret Metropolitan Police Special Branch records in which four new suspects are named and the contents of which now eliminate a number of the “prime suspects” who have been continuously investigated over the ensuing years. Trevor Marriott now believes that all of The Whitechapel Murders were not committed by the same killer and in fact Jack the Ripper may have been nothing more than an urban myth created by sensational journalism at the time of the murders.

THE COMPLEAT FEMALE STAGE BEAUTY by Jeffrey Hatcher | Directed by Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited After decades of Puritan austerity, the playhouses have opened their doors again and crowds flock to see the sensation of the age: an actress of exquisite beauty and charm as well as taste and talent. Her name is Edward Kynaston. At a time when all performers on London’s stages were men, it was Kynaston ‘Ned’ who reigned supreme as the foremost interpreter of female roles. Nothing can eclipse Ned’s brilliant domination of the stage. Nothing, that is, until a young orange-seller with royal connections also sets her cap at a stage career. For the sake of his ‘pretty, witty’ Nell Gwynne, Charles II, with the stroke of a pen, changes the law to allow women to act, and Kynaston’s world is turned upside-down. Llundain, 1661. Ar ôl degawdau o lymder Piwritanaidd, mae’r theatrau wedi agor eu drysau eto ac mae’r dorf yn tyrru i weld syfrdandod yr oes: actores brydferth, ddengar sydd hefyd â thalent a safon. TACHWEDD NOVEMBER 2013

FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER - 11.30AM

A Celebration of the work of Benjamin Britten on what would have been his 100th Birthday.

ST CECILIA’S DAY SPECIAL SCREENING OF

Introduced by Elis Jones Elis is a graduate in Modern Foreign Languages, a qualified teacher and librarian. His career started as a teacher of German and French; among other teaching work he undertook in the early 1970s, he was an extra mural lecturer in Film Appreciation at the School of Art in Shrewsbury. This Lauded 1936 documentary, showing the various stages and procedures of the operation of the Royal Mail train delivery service, remains one of the most instantly recognised films in British film history. It begins with a voiceover commentary describing how the mail is collected for transit. Then, as the train proceeds along the course of its journey, we are shown the various regional railway stations at which it collects and deposits its cargo. Inside the train the process of sorting takes place. As it nears its destination there is a sequence - the best known in the film - in which WH Auden’s spoken verse and Benjamin Britten’s music are combined over montage images of racing train wheels. Birthday lunch of sandwiches and birthday cake prepared and served by students of Themes Restaurant based here on the Newtown Campus.

FRIDAY AFTERNOONS A Song Cycle for Children In the early 1930’s Benjamin Britten wrote this collection of simple songs, with witty piano accompaniments dedicated to his schoolmaster brother Robert and the boys of Clive House Prep school in Prestatyn. 80 years later, in the centenary of Britten’s birth over one hundred and forty local school children have been working hard learning these songs. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to support children from Berriew, Montgomery, Castle Caereinion, Llanidloes, Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd and Hafren Primary Schools as they take to the stage. As part of the Britten 100 celebrations, performances of this song cycle are being performed all over the UK. Sioe i ddathlu canmlwyddiant un o brif ffigyrau cerddoriaeth glasurol. COR MEIBION

FRONCYSYLLTE with special guest Kathryn Rudge

The Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir has been a competitive choir since its inception in 1947 and during the first few years they were often quite severely criticised in competition. They persevered however, as adjudication is always constructive, and as a result the choir rapidly gained in competence. Wins in various Eisteddfods in Wales culminated in “The Double” when the Choir won first place in both the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the International Musical Eisteddfod in 1977. The Choir maintained its record of success in competition into the new millenium and has toured extensively in both Europe and North America. In 2005 the Choir was performing at the wedding of the son of the Choir’s President where Daniel Glatman, the Manager of the successful band “Blue” was a guest. “When I first saw them they were absolutely fantastic,” he said. “They just blew me away and I realised we just had to capture that passion and the amazing sound in a recording studio.” He approached the choir with a view to a recording contract and true to his word persuaded Universal Music to sign the Choir to a three CD contract and the first “Voices of the Valley” was released in 2006. Incredibly it went to “Gold Disc” within three days of release and ultimately to double Platinum. Now with a DVD and 5 CDs under its belt the Choir has sales in more than thirty countries and tracks from the CDs have been selected for inclusion on fifty or so high-profile albums. “If music could fuel engines, Mabon could solve the energy crisis” - Songlines Jamie Smith’s MABON have long been Wales’ finest exponents of original, InterCeltic music – now the internationally acclaimed band return home for their first headline tour of Wales, ‘Taith ADRE Tour’. Vocals, accordion, fiddle, bouzouki, bass and percussion are subtly exploited by five accomplished musicians, working traditional forms and styles anew in songs and melodies by composer Jamie Smith. The energetic sound of jigs and reels; or a graceful mazurka, an ecstatic muiñera; a haunting Welshlanguage love-song or a driving, sing-along, fantasy epic – all are given the same refreshing, creative treatment as the band dances along the borders between Celtic heritage and contemporary sound. These young, virtuosic musicians are already veterans of the world music stage. From Cropredy to Celtic Connections; from Wales’ Llangollen Eisteddfod to the global stage of WOMAD. Festive Brass & Voices with Newtown Silver Band & special guests the Newtown Male Voice Choir & Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd Choir NEWTOWN SILVER BAND follows a busy schedule and is in demand for concerts, shows and

carnivals and supports many charitable events. It is administered by an enthusiastic committee and maintains a Learners Band and Training Band where individuals feed into the Senior Band. The current musical director is Mr Steve Edwards.

NEWTOWN CHOIR numbers some 47 choristers drawn from

all walks of life, some from Newtown itself but mostly from the surrounding communities. One of its main aims is to support local charities and throughout its 62 years existence has willingly done this with so many churches, chapels and charitable organisations benefiting from its services. The choir has taken part in numerous Festivals of 1000 Voices from the Royal Albert Hall.

YSGOL DAFYDD LLWYD CHOIR has tasted success in music, sport, and literature amongst other aspects. Each year, since its opening, the school has won stage medals at the Urdd National Eisteddfod. In March the school choir successfully reached the semi finals of the BBC Songs of Praise ‘Choir of the Year’ 2013. The school choir also won at the Powys Eisteddfod Llanfair Caereinion in July. FRIDAY 13TH DECEMBER - 8.00PM Last year saw the band start out on yet another chapter in their career, embarking on two UK tours, while at the same time taking a timely look back to one of their most famous periods. Having established the longest serving line-up of their career, the departure of guitarist Ken Nicol necessitated a change of personnel and, with the addition of Julian Littman and Pete Zorn, the band re-emerged as a six piece for the first time in many years.

Prosiect newydd, cyffroes, elenni, sydd yn seliedig ar waith yr awdur Terry Pratchet. Gyda’r band yn creu record ar sail nofel Pratchet ‘Wintersmith’.

This time the band has looked even further afield and has found inspiration in the work of famous British author, Terry Pratchett. Now the two are to collaborate on a brand new project, a record based on Pratchett’s Wintersmith novel. The subject matter is completely appropriate for Steeleye Span; a tale of ancient rituals and secret folk dances that perfectly complements their previous work whilst taking it in new directions. The resulting album will be released in the second half of the year... TICKETS £19 | CONCESSIONS £16

SARA PHILPOTT

Early September - Mid November 2013 Sara Philpott graduated from the Central School of Art and Design, London, in 1984. Her paintings are shown mainly in London and in selected Welsh galleries, and her work with private presses such as Gwasg Gregynog and the Old Stile Press features in public and private collections worldwide. Based upon the belief that the most valuable qualities in life are those which cannot easily be seen, only felt; the artist works in the hope that by so scrutinising the visible world, the invisible might be revealed. The work teeters on the tightrope between the aspiration of the way things could be and the way things appear to be in reality. Depicting the natural world, the work is made with thin veils of intensely pigmented traditional oil colours. www.saraphilpott.com

Gallwch hefyd archebu seddau ymlaen llaw a bydd y rhain yn cael eu cadw am bum diwrnod gwaith. Mae’n ddrwg gan Hafren na all y seddau gael eu cadw os na fydd tâl wedi’i dderbyn o fewn y cyfnod hwn. Bydd eich galwadau i archebu dros y ffôn yn cael eu hailgyfeirio i beiriant ateb yn ystod 30 munud cyn perfformiadau er mwyn galluogi staff y Swyddfa Docynnau i ddelio gydag ymwelwyr sy’n cyrraedd. TRWY’R POST Cyfeiriad : Swyddfa Docynnau, Hafren, Ffordd Llanidloes, Y Drenewydd, Powys SY16 4HU. Nodwch enw’r perfformiad, y nifer o docynnau y carech eu harchebu (gan gynnwys unrhyw docynnau mantais), eich enw, eich cyfeiriad a’ch rhif ffôn yn ystod y dydd. Amgaewch siec am y cyfanswm a’i gwneud yn daladwy i ‘Theatr Hafren’ gyda rhif eich cerdyn sieciau ar y cefn. Ychwanegwch 60c at y cyfanswm (os yw’n llai na £65.00) ac os ydych yn dymuno i’ch tocynnau gael eu postio atoch. E-BOST boxoffice@theatrhafren.co.uk AD-DALIADAU A CHYFNEWIDIADAU Mae Hafren yn gwerthfawrogi ymrwymiad cwsmeriaid i’r theatr trwy archebu’n gynnar ar gyfer achlysuron ac yn cydnabod y gall newidiadau ddigwydd o ran cynlluniau. Mewn achos o’r fath, os bydd tocynnau’n cael eu dychwelyd i’r swyddfa docynnau, gwnawn bob ymdrech i’w hailwerthu i gwsmeriaid eraill. Ni ellir sicrhau hyn gan y bydd tocynnau’r theatr yn cael eu gwerthu’n gyntaf. Os bydd y theatr yn llwyddo i ail-werthu’r tocynnau, bydd y swyddfa docynnau’n trefnu credyd i chi am werth y tocynnau, i chi ei ddefnyddio wrth archebu unrhyw docynnau yn y dyfodol. Bydd y trefniant hwn yn gymwys

ar gyfer y prynwr gwreiddiol y tocynnau. Yn anffodus, yn unol â mwyafrif o theatrau proffesiynol eraill, nid yw’n bosibl gwneud ad-daliadau ariannol am docynnau sydd wedi’u prynu eisoes.
