Secondary School Manuel da Fonseca, Santiago do Cacém, Portugal

The current Secondary School Manuel da Fonseca has not always had this name and location. The first building was built in 1959, and it was a private school. From 1970 to 1976 the building was bought by the Ministry of Education and became one Section of the National Gymnasium of Setúbal. In 1977 it changed to Secondary School of Santiago do Cacém. The school had, at that time, 17 normal classrooms and 8 specific rooms. On 16/10/92 it was name after the well-known writer Manuel da Fonseca, and in 1995/96 the school began to operate in the current building. Nowadays the school has 21 normal classrooms and 15 specific rooms. Our school has more or less 500 students from 11 to 18 years of age distributed by elementary, secondary and vocational levels and about 80 teachers. We also have some adult courses at night.

All project activities are certainly interesting enrichment of the educational process in partners´ schools and they contribute to the development of students´ knowledge and skills in various fields. Undoubtedly, international project meetings belong to the most popular and interesting project events. The first of six meetings was held from 22nd October to 26th October 2012 in Slovakia at the premises of the coordinator of the project Gymnazium in Snina. The first day of the week was aimed at mutual introducing of the partners, presentations of the partners´ schools and countries, introduction of teachers and students teams. In the afternoon all the partners took a tour of the town and visited the mayor at the town hall, where the guests from Bulgaria and Portugal enrolled in the memorial book of the town. The peak of the first day was a welcome party during which Slovak students presented traditional Slovak songs and dances and the guests had also the chance to taste traditional Slovak dishes. On the other days of the project meeting students and teachers attended workshops and activities related to the project plan in the mornings and in the afternoons they visited some of the interesting cultural and historical places in the region for example wooden church in Ruský Potok, water reservoir Starina, Astronomical observatory in Kolonica, castle and museum in Humenné, Andy Warhol´s Museum in Medzilaborce and the second largest city of Slovakia Kosice. During the whole week students from Bulgaria and Portugal stayed in the families of Slovak students, so they spent also free time and evenings together, as typically for their age, they had parties, went for pizza or bowling. The programme of the first project meeting was rich in new experiences and a lot of new friendships were established. We dare to say that it was a very successful start of our two-year collaboration and we are looking forward to our next meeting in Bulgaria in April 2013.
