Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World presents the creations of a bold contemporary art movement born during the most transformative period in modern Chinese and recent world history. Organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Art and China after 1989 features works by 71 key artists and groups active in China and internationally, whose provocations aim to forge a reality free from ideology, to reinforce the role of the individual apart from the collective, and to define contemporary Chinese experience in universal terms. Bracketed by the end of the Cold War in 1989 and the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the exhibition surveys the culture of artistic experimentation in a period marked by the onset of globalization and the rise of a newly powerful China on the world stage. The exhibition’s subtitle, Theater of the World, comes from an installation by Paris-based artist Huang Yong Ping, originally presented in Stuttgart in 1993. This cage-like structure housing different species of insects and reptiles is an apt metaphor for the age of globalization, drawing on Chinese cosmology, Western Enlightenment ideas of the panopticon as a structure of control, and Michael Foucault’s critique of modernism.

Chagall: The Breakthrough Years, 1911–1919 june

1–september 2, 2018

curator : lucía agirre galleries :

In 1911, the young Marc Chagall made a dramatic breakthrough in his work as he found himself torn between the contrasting past experiences in his native Belarus and his new life in the French capital. He lived in Paris from 1911 to 1914, producing a series of paintings that combined his memories of life in the Hasidic community of Vitebsk with icons of the modern metropolis. Reminiscences of Russian folk art appeared alongside the most progressive stylistic experiments of the avant-garde community he lived with in Paris until 1914. That year, the artist went home to visit his family and was overtaken by the outbreak of World War I. This marked the beginning of a turbulent eight-year period in which Chagall embarked on a phase of intense soul-searching, reflected in many of the paintings and works on paper produced during that time. The artist created numerous self-portraits, depictions of everyday existence with his wife Bella and daughter Ida, drawings of the ravages of war and community life, and images of a new Russia which, following the October Revolution, appointed him Commissar of Art in Vitebsk.

educational space

In connection with the educational program Learning Through Art, this exhibition presents selected works made by 140 students between ages 6 and 12 during the 2017–18 school year. In this project, six artists—Elssie Ansareo, Naia del Castillo, Iñaki Gracenea, Maider López, Manu Muniategiandikoetxea, and Jorge Rubio—visit schools to work with the students and teachers, reinforcing the elementary curriculum by using art as a learning tool.
