A comprehensive journey through more than four decades of work by acclaimed German photographer Thomas Struth (b. 1954, Geldern, Germany), this exhibition will offer examples of the different stages of his work and the social concerns that have driven the evolution of his influential art. With more than 130 works, the exhibition, first seen at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, is the most extensive showing of his artistic career to date and contains early works that have never been exhibited before. Research materials from his archive will also help to present the ideas he has been working on for the past years. This meticulously composed presentation connects Struth’s initial ideas to his well-defined groups of works, such as Unconscious Places, Family Portraits, Audience, Museum Photographs, New Pictures from Paradise, and This Place. Thus establishing a dialogue with other works such as Berlin-Project, a video work conceived in 1998 together with media artist Klaus vom Bruch, or with the most recent photo series Nature & Politics as well as with the landscape and flower photographs

created for the wards of Winterthur Hospital, later compiled in the monograph Dandelion Room (Löwenzahnzimmer). These relations between works highlight Struth’s ability to combine analysis with photographic creation in the multiple subjects and techniques that he applies to produce astonishing and powerful photographic images. Exhibition organized by Haus der Kunst, Munich, in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

This exhibition presents a retrospective survey of the work of Jesús Rafael Soto (b. 1923, Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela; d. 2005, Paris). Structured around his concept of the aesthetic experience in terms of temporality, intensity, and viewer participation, Soto. The Fourth Dimension offers a rare opportunity to re-examine the career of a visionary artist who transformed the art of the second half of the 20th century. Over a career that stretched for more than five decades, Soto played a fundamental role in the redefinition of the social reach and function of the work of art. Breaking away in the 1950s from the conventional separation of painting and sculpture, his practice moved progressively beyond the visual field to become emblematic of the radical shift undergone by the art object in subsequent years. Transcending the optical research of his early work, he formed part of the first group of kinetic artists in Paris together with Jean Tinguely, Iacov Agam, Victor Vasarely, and Julio Le Parc. He also associated with experimental groups of international importance, such as Zero or the circle that formed around the Signals gallery in London. In 1967 Soto began to produce his Penetrables, large cubic structures made of plastic or metal filaments that he worked on until the end of his career. At the same time, he continued to produce series of paintings and sculptures whose participative potential is developed without requiring complete access to the interior of the work for the viewer, who nevertheless always intervenes to set it in motion. Until the end of his life, Soto worked in his studio while accepting numerous large-scale commissions for public areas and institutions around the world. The idea of a “fourth dimension” evokes the unity of space and duration, the visual form and the temporal experience, and

is one of the key concepts inherited by the artists of the mid20th century from the period of quasi-Utopian spirituality of the modernist avant-gardes. Soto believed that artists should employ their own techniques and strategies in a field of investigation shared with science and philosophy.

For the first time, selected highlights from the picture gallery, the sculpture collection, and the collection of prints and drawings of the Kunsthalle Bremen will be presented to a Spanish audience. The focus will be on the art of Germany and France from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Divided in four sections, the works of German and French artists will engage in an artistic discourse ranging from the Romantic era to Impressionism, Post-impressionism, the artist colony at Worpswede, and Expressionism. In the show, paintings by Romantic artists Caspar David Friedrich and Eugène Delacroix confront each other. Paintings by French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir will be seen alongside the so-called “triumvirate” of German Impressionism: Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, and Max Slevogt. One of the highlights of the show will be Van Gogh’s painting Field with Poppies (1889), whose controversial acquisition by the Kunsthalle Bremen in 1911 sowed dissension among artists, museum directors, and art critics, sparking the famous Bremer Künstlerstreit or Bremen artists’ dispute. Painters at the artist colony Worpswede and the Bremen artist Paula Modersohn-Becker spearheaded the move toward modernism in German art. The grand finale is formed by the artists of Der Blaue Reiter, Die Brücke, and

Max Beckmann, as well as their contemporaries André Masson and Pablo Picasso, the Spaniard who played such a major role in French art. The motivation for the wide-ranging presentation of these masterpieces in Bilbao is the Icons exhibition that is being held simultaneously at the Kunsthalle Bremen, and which will take up the entire museum. curator : manuel cirauqui film

& video gallery

With a practice that navigates the waters between film and performance, Jesse Jones (b. 1978, Dublin) explores how collective memory is externalized and historical phenomena crystallize in scenarios and experiences. The installation Tremble Tremble, first presented in the Irish Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, is an ambitious work dedicated to the power of bewitchment, gestures, and words. By revisiting the historical figure of the witch—perhaps the last form of shamanism native to Europe—the artist investigates the social legacy of 16th-century women and their resistance to religious oppression in those seemingly remote times. The witch emerged as a gender archetype and a disruptive element that threatened to transform reality, altering its logic and its conventions. Tremble Tremble is a video installation with multiple components, including sculptures, moving curtains, and two enormous screens. It suggests the magical reorganization of the real, mixing ballads, spells, quotes, and

folk songs in a legendary electrified setting. For the installation at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Jones will create a sitespecific scenography with elements drawn from the mythology and folklore of Ireland and the Basque Country.
