hat a month we have just had; The William Hill Derby has been nothing short of fantastic, currently writing this on the eve of the final. I was very lucky and received an invite to the William Hill Derby lunch and what a great day that was. Kate Miller, Jennie Prest and everyone connected with Hills should be very proud it was a massive success. It gives you a lot of hope to be in a room with so many positive people all excited and looking forward to the future of the sport. Wimbledon and William Hill were not the only track and bookmaker putting on a show last month; Monmore and Ladbrokes Summer festival was also incredible and the good news is there are more big races coming up which promise much, all covered in the preview section.

TV coverage from Sky Sports and RPGTV goes from strength to strength; I had a great time on 22nd June appearing on RPGTV. It was a lot of fun, we covered the action from Crayford and Newcastle and one thing that jumped out at me was the variety on offer. Really all tracks should be offering this, the show flew by, was enjoyable and there was something for everybody. We have now hit five months â&#x20AC;&#x201C; were did that time go? It seems to have flown by and most pleasing is things are going so well, this is very much down to the fantastic team we have here at Greyhound Express. We still need you to spread the word, use the magazine to advertise your services and products and I will keep fighting your corner and try our best to keep it FREE of charge. The magazine could not be completed

and sent out for the 1st this month, I made the decision that it was better to include the fantastic Derby than have it a month late. When the finals are at the end of the month it makes it tricky but I hope you share the view it was well worth the wait. On a personal note this must be one of the most exciting times in my career, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve signed with Sporting Execs and my agent is Darren Lewis, he has worked with people like Paolo Di Canio and other major superstars, to listen to the plans he has for my career is very exciting and I plan on working very hard repaying the faith shown in me. It is definitely an adventure that will take me to other worlds outside of greyhound racing but this will always be my true love. Mick

JACK SLAYS THE Charlie Lister OBE makes it a magnificent S

idaz Jack and Charlie Lister OBE gave a master class in the world’s greatest race the William Hill Derby which was worth £150,000 and they sealed a place in history not to mention capturing the hearts and minds of the public. All the talk before this great final (well most of it) was about Ballymac Vic and Droopys Jet but cometh the hour cometh the man, Charlie Lister OBE quite simply was the best trainer in the race (the only one to win the Derby before) and he made it magnificent win number seven. Land Of Hope And Glory was sung brilliantly before the final, it set the stage wonderfully for what the English were about to do. The traditional Derby roar seemed louder than ever, lids opened and Ballymac Vic took a flier for Ireland, Sidaz Jack was brave though and rushed to the corner, nothing was going to stand in the way of this young dog, he wanted it and made sure he was to get around in front. Once in front he was strong, showed guts and determination that only a true champion can display. Ballymac Vic passed the youngster in the semi-finals but Jack was to seek his revenge when it really counted in the big one. He repelled all challengers and never looked like he would be beaten. Paul Young’s Airlie Impact ran on like a train to snatch second from Ballymac Vic and record a sensational English one-two. The winning distance of 1.25L and time of 28.37 are not really that important, what is important is the trophy stays in England and the £150,000 first prize is on its way to Simon Wooder and Darren Johnson. This youngster could now be set to take greyhound racing by storm, already installed 25/1 for next year’s Classic. Too many people deserted our champions and it’s a lesson that cost many in the pocket. We have fantastic trainers in this country, brilliant dogs and if your back is ever against the wall; one man you should always turn to is Charlie Lister OBE. Let’s not forget Paul Young who made it a brilliant one-two for England and also the

LOOKING AHEAD: 2014 WILLIAM HILL DERBY

It is about time the knockers in this game gave it a rest, what a fantastic Derby this was, quite simply the best ever. William Hill deserve massive credit but let’s not forget about the GRA and all the staff at Wimbledon. Clive Feltham and the GRA in particularly come in for stick, it’s been difficult times but now we should all be looking forward. Every Englishman who is a greyhound racing fan should stand up and be proud; we have the greatest greyhound race in the

world. Forget Scotland, Ireland, America, Australia or any other country. The William Hill Greyhound Derby is the best by a country mile and next year it is set to get even better carrying a £200,000 first-prize which makes it the richest race in the world and very much confirms what we already know the BEST. The role the GRA have played may go unnoticed by many but not in these quarters, Clive Feltham is a man that is very much looking forward to the future and must be congratulated for the GRA’s part in this brilliant race. Our efforts should be concentrated on what a brilliant race we have, the wonderful job William Hill, GRA and everyone else connected have actually done; they have made the William Hill Derby the envy of the world! is starting to get its mojo back and we are ready to rock and roll. This is the best sport in the world and England is the place to be with fantastic TV coverage, prize-money on the rise, and sponsors like William Hill it can only get even better.

Apart from obviously Sidaz Jack the most impressive greyhound of the night actually was beaten; Farloe Tango lost out narrowly to Bouncy Bocko. To say Tango impressed though would be a massive understatement, Charlie Lister OBE told me in the week “He won’t go over four bends again” after this run you could not back any greyhound in the world to beat him over six bends. Hang on though how far does he stay? If he stays a marathon trip let me put my head on the block and tell you he will be the greatest we have seen for many a year. After suffering first-bend bumping he was out with the washing, he showed sensational speed to go down by 0.5L in a

magical time 41.54. Without trouble he would not have broken the track record – he would have smashed it. Lemon Pluto; things did not work out in the Derby but he was impressive here, trapping out brilliantly to make all and win by 5.25L in 28.31. I was so pleased for Pat Rosney, a Lancashire lad he sent out Ballymac Jones to an impressive victory in the sprint recording a fantastic time of 15.91 Hather George and Holdem Spy served up a cracker with the latter just getting up close home in a photo-finish in 28.33. Barrie Draper got some joy at Wimbledon when Glenpadden Post won the William Hill Derby Plate. He showed tremendous track craft and is worth following, he came from off the pace to score in 28.50 Musical Gaga gave the Childs camp plenty to cheer putting in a fantastic display in the Dorando Marathon. She blasted out and quickly put serious daylight between herself and her rivals that gap was deteriorating at the finish but defeat was

never in any question, Musical Gaga won by 3.25L in 56.06. Worth mentioning what an achievement it was from Aero Gaga who had his 100th career race, he has been a real champion and I’ve had so much fun and pleasure seeing him run over the years, he still retains plenty of ability.

Holloway Lands A OneTwo In Champion Hurdle

Ricky Holloway loves his hurdlers, this race had escaped him but that all changed in dramatic fashion. The GTA Chairmen landed a one-two in the William Hill Champion Hurdle worth £1,500 to the winners with brilliant Soviet Military and Westmead Meteor there was 2.5L between them in a good 29.26. There is no doubt in my mind the countries number-one hurdler is a resident at Ricky Holloway’s kennel but which one? The debate is set to go on and on. Just Westmead Meteor for me at this stage but it could all change.

Thirty-Six greyhounds will chase the brilliant £25,000 first-prize over 450m. Last year it was won by the brilliant Loughteen Blanco, the year before by the sensational Blonde Snapper so you can bet your last pound this year’s winner will be very special.

It will be hugely competitive, expect to see the biggest names in the sport at Sunderland. Skate On possesses brilliant early pace and she will relish the conditions, she already has a 26.84 +20 on her CV over course and distance and in my opinion looks a better greyhound now. This was always her target and under the guidance of the McNair’s is sure to put up a bold show in the classic. Another bitch with a massive chance is Droopys Loner she was sent off the favourite for last-year’s final but had to settle for 3rd. Dean Childs is confident of another big show this year and is hoping she can go two steps better this year.

Charlie Lister OBE is always a force and he has pencilled in Lemon Pluto for a crack at the classic and he looks a progressive greyhound that hints the best is yet to come. Loughteen Blanco will also be likely to be back to attempt to defend his crown, it would be foolish to write him off and Seamus Cahill is a man to always stay on right side of. Wells Honour last year’s runner-up is in great form for Craig Dawson winning sprints all over the country and with his blistering early he surely must come in to equations once again. Farloe Barracuda was brilliant in the Golden Sprint and just like Blonde Snapper he is looking to complete this fantastic double. It promises to be one of the

highlights of the year and hopefully we may even see some Irish challengers.

Crash Set To Become A Rocket

Having just wrote the preview news came through that Steve Fluin of the Champagne Club purchased Stonepark Crash for £15,000 from Michael O’Donovan and will be renamed Bubbly Rocket. This greyhound is TOP DRAW, possesses fantastic early-pace and is a match for any greyhound especially over the short four-bend trips. I caught up with Steve: “We are very excited Mick, he is a brilliant greyhound

I spoke to Charlie Lister OBE and he confirmed that Fear Emoski and Aghaburren Paddy had this race in their sights and that news fills me with excitement. Fear Emoski is one of the best sixbend prospects we have seen for many a year. The only greyhound I would even consider to be has good a prospect over sixbends his her kennel-mate Farloe Tango (Will he go for this?) probably Tango will be kept for St Leger at Wimbledon but you just never know. Aghaburren Paddy is interesting, some of the six-bend trips test his stam-

At the time of writing he has not been around the venue but he raced with success at Poole which will stand him in good stead. He is one of the fastest six-bend greyhounds to the corner and could be the greyhound to have a punt on each-way. You must also consider Dural Bound for Maxine Locke if he is entered, he will be flying at the death and be difficult to stop qualifying. In all honesty though Fear Emoski looks the one to be with, there is every chance she will add the Grand Prix to go with her magnificent Coral Regency victory.

He told me: “We are all getting excited now, the trainers are booking in trials and they are all heading here, every year the festival seems to just get better and better, we only see some of the trainers once a year but it is brilliant of them to support us. “Best local hopes are Pinpoint Maxi (Classic) Hather siobs (Stayers) but it

promises to be sensational and not just the main events. “Good luck to all trainers and greyhounds taking part and thanks for supporting us.” With Mickey putting up Pinpoint Maxi I caught up with Kelly Macari: “Really pleased with him, nice and smooth since coming here. He’s trapping well and if

he continues he can go a long way. The dog is named after Alan Findlay’s granddaughter and is as good a dog we have had since Bling Bling. Lovely dog and the kennel are all very excited especially with the classic being on home soil, we just need a bit of luck. “We all love the magazine and hope to see you up here for the festival.”

For a whopping seventy-two greyhounds and carrying a first-prize of £15,000 for many British-breeders this is their Derby and it promises to be yet again a brilliant competition. The Produce Stakes has been run at Swindon since 2004 there was also a stake at Nottingham but that has sadly ended now. This great race has been run at Harringay, Wembley, Hall Green, Nottingham but now its home is firmly at Swindon. I remember the first-running in 2004 it was won by the brilliant Robbie De Niro, since then it has gone from strength to strength and is definitely one of the year’s highlights.

I Am Firm On David’s Chances

The countries leading breeder is undisputed in my eyes it is David Firmager, last year Romeo Recruit came runner-up in this race and went on to win Nottingham’s version, the year before his brilliant Romeo Metro took the classic and you can bet your last pound David will be in the mix once more this year. The Romeo (dogs) and Fabulous (bitches) prefix will be strutting their stuff around Swindon. So there was only one man to catch up and that was David Firmager. “Around two years ago we decided to cut down on the breeding numbers so we are paying that price now, we have upped the breeding and now we are breeding more than we have ever done, I’d guess we are about nine litters light for this year’s Produce Stakes. “Our best chance probably is Romeo

Hi Rumble, he seems to have come back better from a break and is a strong running dog with a bit of luck he should go far. “A bitch I really like the look of is Fabulous Glow, she went lame in her very first race an A1 at Nottingham, we are hopeful she will be ok in time but if there are any doubts we won’t risk her. It promises to be a great competition and best of luck to everyone taking part.” The competition is bound to be fierce one team Esther Driver (Breeder) and Paul Sallis (Trainer) are lethal and having a fantastic year. Lil Risky last year was one of the best sprinters in the game, he roared through the competition unbeaten and seemed to handle the step-up in trip with ease. He is not in the same prolific form this time around but it would be foolish to write him off. He still retains plenty of ability and had an outstanding career. The opposite is the case for Frisby Barney he looks to be a better greyhound this year than last and will be a live contender to try and go one better. David Pruhs is nicknamed the ‘King Of Peterborough’ for a very good reason his record is nothing short of phenomenal. David said: “Barney is well, he knows

the track and runs it well, this will be his target and with a bit of luck he could go close.” It most certainly will not be a two dog race; Bay City Impact shaved two spots of the track-record in May and looks to be a real talent and more than a match for any around this circuit. Bred by Larry Harding connections will be hoping they can add this title to his ever growing CV. Another Pruhs runner that if entered will surely be a force in the competition is Isheforreal, they were not 100% whether this would be his target or Sunderland. Fermhoy Henry from the kennel will head to Sunderland and you would imagine he would not travel alone. One thing is for sure this will be a cracker, a real shame it clashes with the festival at Sunderland but it will still take some winning and is set to be very exciting.

he most dangerous thing I encounter at work is straining a finger from typing, catching a cold while travelling on a packed train with everyone coughing and sneezing or stubbing a toe rushing to answer that phone call. For one group of people our brave soldiers who are off fighting for Queen and country, danger is their middle name, many sadly come back injured and this is where ‘Help For Heroes’ comes in – they do their best for our heroes every single day. It is fantastic that greyhound racing is

playing its part, Martyn Wiley is training ‘Runs For Heroes’ an October 2011 puppy who won on his debut around Romford, all his prize-money goes to this fantastic charity. Martyn was keen to point out he was not alone: “I was speaking with Mark in the Romford racing office, he came up with the idea and we set about making it happen. “Westcliffe Rugby Club purchased the greyhound, Greyhound Sports Medicine (Romford track vets) are providing all vet care free of charge and I am training the dog.

“It is great we have all come together to benefit this wonderful charity. “He is a nice puppy won by over 6L on his debut and looks to be going the right way, I hope he wins many more because that will benefit this great cause.” This really is a great story and one I hope runs and runs, I will do something in the national newspaper and follow this with great interest. Summer loving in the West Midlands LADBROKES SUMMER FESTIVAL – MONMORE All the talk has been about the Derby but there has been some fantastic racing at Monmore; they always know how to put on a show and you have to applaud the amount of prize-money that was on offer all sponsored by Ladbrokes – truly sensational.

Strategic Review has not been knocking on the door he has quite literally been hammering it down. This puppy is right up there with the best of them and this victory is richly deserved, Chris Allsopp’s charge made the bend in front and from that point it was all over in terms of a contest anyone who took the 7/2 on offer were making their way to get paid out after the second bend. He ran out an emphatic 9L winner in a brilliant 27.91 +30. Make no mistake this is a greyhound to follow and stay on the right side of, this won’t be his last competition win.

Sent off a 7/4 shot he missed his break and I’m sure anyone who was on him their heart skipped a beat but they needed not to worry, he took it up at the third-bend and powered away from the opposition by 6L in another brilliant time of 27.96 +30.

What a competition this was, unfortunately Fear Emoski picked up an injury and was withdrawn from the competition but the remainder served up a real treat. Aghaburren Paddy broke well and set a fair pace but was run out of it by eventual winner Afew Dollarsmore who got up close home to make it another Chris Allsopp win.

Dural Bound finished with a right rattle but just failed to get up by a short-head in 37.74 +40. The top three in this race definitely are worth following especially Dural Bound, Maxine Locke’s stayer is definitely on the up and sure to win a competition soon.

hen you look at defining moments of the sport the fantastic Owners Bonus Series must come into the reckoning has one of the greatest initiatives that was ever introduced. For years owners in the UK could not see their beloved charges taking part in stake races for all grades but now thanks to the GBGB that is no longer a dream, it is happening all over the country and the sport is in a much better place for it. Competitions normally involve 18 greyhounds with a heat and final worth £500 to the winner, £100 for each finalist (total £1,100 prize-money for finals) we really should be celebrating these; here are this month’s best winners, congratulations from everyone at Greyhound Express to connections of all winners. 1st – Pond Debussy, Trained by Harry Williams; see feature 2nd – Lusha Beauty for Paul Garland stormed to Owner’s Bonus Series success in A7 grade at Hove, a July 2009 whelp he is just turning a veteran but proved he retains plenty of ability. Winning his heat by 3.25L in 30.52. In the final sent he was sent off the 7/4F, bombed out of the traps recording a 4.16 split to score readily by 6L in a smart 30.31. 3rd – Crucial Shebe, trained by D Mitchell wins A5 Owner’s Bonus Series at Poole, fantastic to see this brilliant bitch take it up at the third-bend in both the heats and final, that is no easy feat at Poole. She clocked 27.67 in the final and I firmly believe this November 2011 whelp is one to keep an eye on in the future.

Pond is making waves at the Toon

Harry Williams is a fantastic trainer and breeder, no stranger to big race success but I am sure the whole camp took a lot of pleasure in Pond Debussy’s brilliant Owner’s Bonus Series victory at Newcastle. Newcastle put on something different making it a handicap competition and these are going down a real treat with the public and racing journalists alike (Well done Newcastle I love them). He was easy to back in the final going off a 4/1 shot, he had to gun down Babs View who was off a whopping 20m and for large parts of the race Babs looked the winner. It was a pulsating end to a great competition; Pond Debussy’s track-craft and power packed finish were rewarded when he got up close home by 0.5L in 28.97 off 4m. Congratulations Harry and Rita Williams and the whole team.

Derby finalists in the spotlight

This summary has been written prior to the Greyhound Derby final being run. Every greyhound breeder dreams of breeding a Derby winner, or at least a finalist so congratulations are in order to the breeders of this years finalists. The 2013 Derby has seen a definite swing towards the early pace type runners, with much more emphasis seeming to be placed on trapping and early speed. It is in my opinion more than just ‘coincidence’ that breeders are turning to the old Irish/English lines in an effort to regain this early pace. It is also worth noting that Larkhill Jo figures in 5 of the 6 finalists pedigrees within 3 generations. Jim Joes Up, the sire of Screen Critic is a son of Larkhill Jo with a 100% old fashioned pedigree. He has sired a Derby finalist from just 72 Ire/Uk offspring, a remarkable achievement, yet a disappointing fact that breeders have in general ignored him whilst using some lesser quality imports as they seek to outcross. Droopys Jet is the finalist with the highest percentage of ‘home grown blood’ whilst Ballymac Vic has the TRAP 1

least. The average is maround the 60% mark and seems a definite swing towards the old lines we know so well. Let’s hope the trend continues. Breeding is all about opinions, it is what makes this sport so interesting. One persons pedigree heaven is anothers ‘wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole’. In light of these findings... and having just picked a bitch up from the transporter having been ‘implanted’ with Trade Official (the bitch has a litter already by Droopys Scolari)... let’s just hope that I have got it right................ has always been a greyhound I have held in the highest of regards and had been personally earmarked as the 2012 St Leger winner as early as March last year when equalling the 550m track record at Henlow in a trial (33.07sec). However, frustratingly he is a real enigma, and undoubtedly a tricky and fragile customer when it comes to training him to win races. Current trainer Kelly Findlay has been on RPGTV displaying her frustration and the difficulties trying to get the best out of what is clearly an extremely talented greyhound. Having already been to Crayford, Sittingbourne, Henlow, Hove and Coventry racing over both four and six bends, it was not until tested over the marathon trip at Coventry in a two-round competition last month, that the son of Kinloch Brae began to show his true colours. A two-and-three-quarter lengths success in the opening round of a minor but ultra-competitive and top class competition was very pleasing on the eye, but unfortunately all attention was drawn to a disappointing Ballymac Swift - who had been in opposition but flopped and finished only fourth. It was not until a week later on 2nd June that a new star was truly born, announcing his arrival on to the marathon scene with an emphatic eight-and-a-half lengths demolition job of a field including Aayamzabella and Swabys Princess - showing success the week before to be certainly no fluke. Taking the final by the scruff of the neck at turn five, Findlay’s powerhouse soared to success stopping the clock at an impressive 54.11sec - the third fastest run over the 859m trip in 2013 - on just the greyhound’s second start over an ex-

tended and energy-sapping eight-bend distance. This greyhound has always been regarded as possessing superstar pace, but extracting it has always proved the problem and been a real head scratcher for the numerous trainers to have put a lead on him. His success which has now extended to a winning streak of three is a real indication to just how good a trainer Findlay is, and this month’s award is as much for the training achievement than it is for the outstanding performance. Findlay looks to have finally unlocked the key to this potential marathon monster, his success in claiming the Himalayan Climber Marathon final is as good an effort as seen over eight bends so far this year - let alone this month - he duly warrants the performance of the month in a race that could well mark the dawn of new and exciting staying power.

2nd; Jemmathesnake

the variation in which they supply on their graded racing cards, including what was an interesting recent Owners Bonus Series open to just British Bred greyhounds. Julie Luckhurst’s JEMMATHESNAKE was an unknown quantity coming into the Series - with just a number of trials to her name showing some encouraging improvement with each run but that is all. Sent off 2-1 jolly on her debut in a softlooking A8, there was a lot to like about the manner in which she went about opening her account on the first time of asking - riding early trouble before asserting at the third turn. However, the best was undoubtedly yet to come, and in the final and on just her second start, she bolted from the traps and made every single yard. Consisting of established and more than capable performers, who had all earned the right to race in the £500 showdown, the September 2011 whelp tore off and simply did not see another rival.

With very little racing under her belt the time is satisfactory, but what was taking, was the manner in which she landed the spoils. Stayer and second favourite Roundabouts took up a menacing pitch off the second turn, and looked a big player given how well she sees out the four bend trip, but her power was severely blunted as she simply could not go with the winner who drove all four bends smartly and professionally as well as showing a nice stride. If the impressive and lucrative beginning to this black bitch’s career is anything to go by, she clearly has a very bright future.

3rd; Priceless Pilot

With every media angle awash with Derby coverage, there was a real desire to look away from the action at Wimbledon this month, but with all six stages televised due to additional RPGTV coverage, it became increasingly difficult to ignore. There were countless phenomenal runs during the Derby, including romps from Irish raiders Droopys Jet, Ballymac Vic and Tyrur Sugar Ray, but getting the nod for inclusion and scoring with one of the most exciting runs I have ever witnessed, is another greyhound who crossed the

Irish Sea for a tilt - PRICELESS PILOT In terms of pure excitement, the sport doesn’t get any better than when Paul Hennessy’s charge came from seemingly another parish to pass all five opponents and scrape home by the narrowest of margins. Turning for home, the St Leger-bound Pilot had it all to do incredibly still in rear and in sixth position - seemingly unlikely to qualify, let alone progress with a victory. What was to unfold was truly astonishing and even caught out poor Errol Blyth, who was understandably already winding down his commentary with Mark Wallis’s Benkaat Blue looking all over the winner. Taking around 15 lengths out of the field on the run in is something not even the great Westmead Hawk was capable of at Plough Lane, despite his scintillating finishing kick. We may just have seen the St Leger winner that night at Wimbledon, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising, having now seen exactly what the greyhound is capable of - regardless of anything else, it was right up there amongst the most exciting climaxes to a greyhound race you will ever see.

GREYHOUND TO FOLLOW: DROOPYS DAVE

At the third time of asking, Paul Young’s promising puppy was able to shed his maiden tag in impressive fashion riding and swerving some early carnage at Hove. With eye-catching trials on his card and a decent run in behind the smart Canford Rules when again, encountering severe traffic problems, it has been clear from day one that this greyhound has potent pace. Although it was on 20th June, that the son of Westmead Hawk finally came of age, scoring by a neck over useful yardstick Financial Crisis. First bend carnage ensued during the race, meaning railer and clad in the red jacket Droopys Dave, had to negotiate four bumping greyhounds and showed tremendous track craft and bravery to take a wide course and pass all four on the outer before setting his sights on the leader who looked to have slipped the field. Motoring off the second turn and eating into the deficit down and back, this youngster showed tremendous speed and attitude. Couple those useful attributes with the confidence gained from getting his head in front, and this youngster is going places and one to keep an eye on.

IAN BLAND: OUR INSIDE MAN AT CRAYFORD

50 up for Newlawn Sweep I

t gives me the greatest of pleasure to announce that Crayfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all time race record holder Newlawn Sweep won his 50th graded race here on 1 June when romping in at odds of 5-1. The track is staging a veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parade of ex-racers here during our evening meeting on Friday 28 June and Sweep will be the star attraction when he parades before the public. There are no plans to retire the dog at the moment as far as I am aware and his current stats read 259 races 50 wins and 59 second place finishes. The dog is simply an owners dream and he has secured his place in the stadiums history books, I doubt whether we will ever see his record beaten. Pony Bride and Burgess Lad tipped here last month have both won twice at combined win odds of 7-1 and here are my tips for you to follow now over the coming month. I have to start with Allpip and Droopys Coco who both put in eye catching performance during the month and whilst the pair will incur upgradings the clock times that they recorded would indicate that there is scope for further wins certainly in the short term. In both cases I think it was a case of the dogs being in a position for the first time here to show exactly what they were capable of however their win times can not be ignored and are certainly fast enough to win in higher grades. Droopys Coco was purchased here in the Irish greyhound sales back in March and she looked like a very decent prospect on that day. The September 2011 daughter of Duke Special came into the sales without any previous trial or race form and started her racing career here in late March and it became apparent very quickly that our 380 metres around four bends was too short for her as she was unable to get into her races early enough to be competitive over that trip. The decision was then taken by connections to give her a run over 540 me-

tres giving her more of a chance to get into her stride. Her trial time saw her race in bottom grade S8 for her first outing and she simply flew around the track winning by over fourteen lengths in a time of 34.44 seconds. In this grade a time of around 35.30 seconds would be expected in an S8 hence the distance she put between herself and the field. Her latest run has seen another similar time in 34.43 seconds in an S5 graded race beaten by just half a length. The bottom line is that these times were no fluke and if repeated again would certainly win in at least a couple of grades higher should she trap and lead early. In similar circumstances Allpip romped home recently in an A7 graded race over 380 metres in a time of 23.50

seconds which is more in keeping with what you would expect from an A2-A3 level dog. This was the dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tenth race at the track and the first time that the greyhound had gone under the 24.00 second barrier. His nine previous runs had been in grades A5 and A6 and he had finished in the last two in his three previous races hence the drop to A7. For the first time latest he managed to lead away from the traps and ran away from the field to win by over seven lengths. Both he and Coco have now shown what they are capable of if they can lead away from the boxes and I think there are more wins to come from both. Others for you to note are Lucky Top, Tinas Junior and Looking For Eric.

It’s the ultimate test N

ot a bad aperitif but now it was time for the main course. Five gruelling rounds at Wimbledon is the perfect hors d’oeuvres to the final of the greatest greyhound race of the year, the derby final. ‘That can’t win, I just can’t have it.’ How many times have we heard that over the years? Suggesting a certain greyhound doesn’t have the ability to win a certain race. Pretty naïve isn’t it? But let’s not kid ourselves here. We have all most certainly used those famous last words at least once in our life. I was very much guilty of using this phrase in the first round of the William Hill Greyhound Derby this year. Heat 16 to be precise. A Poole-based greyhound called Farkland Tyson turned up to SW19 to do battle with the big boys. Now I should have really known better seeing as Poole was my local hunting ground for 18 months a few years back. But nevertheless I made the bold statement in saying ‘this can’t win’. No prizes for what happened, Tyson pinged out and made all in 28.87. The dog I had earlier told my brother and his novice greyhound experience girlfriend ‘couldn’t win’, had gone and done in what I thought was the unthinkable and obliged. I get the feeling that whatever connections had aimed to do in the Derby with Farkland Tyson (not embarrassing me being one of them) had been achieved. A fantastic run. A 25/1 returned SP and I’m pretty sure it was over double that on the machine. It’s quite good fun this derby stuff, eh lads? Whilst I sheepishly climbed back under my shell in embarrassment, I sat back in somewhat amazement to listen to a few locals at Wimbledon. There talking point involved ‘big’ trainers with ‘big’ dogs who were involved in the derby and how much of a ‘tragedy’ it must be if you don’t get your ‘big’ dog to the later stages. Maybe it’s me, but when you hear such dross it really does set me off. People who have been in the game years still very willing to having a wild guess up. On this occasion it wound me up that much I’m sat here with ATR on waiting

to tell you all about it. Unfortunately, just like many other sports, this great game has many knockers. In which sometimes, if not always, I struggle to understand their logic. (As I write this, we are at the final stage of this year’s greyhound derby. By the time you noble Greyhound Express followers read this piece you will all be wiser as to which one of six was victorious). I was left frustrated with the ‘knockers’ comments and I was adamant in dispelling some myths that some racing folk seem to have. Just because your dog is faster than any other dog prior to the competition it automatically means your job is easier as a trainer? It certainly helps, yes. Every breeder, owner and trainer are all looking for the fastest dog on the planet, but as many people know, the fastest greyhound doesn’t always win the ultimate classic. The grade 1 competition in some respects is a project. It’s about getting your greyhound in best shape possible to be able to work with over the four weeks. Manag-

ing to glide through the early rounds knowing you still have a ‘bit to work with’. Some may say that this is also a myth. I’m not saying there is a switch that you can just turn on and off whenever you fancy it, but for me it isn’t just about the four weeks. It’s the preparation beforehand. The month leading up to the derby is just as important as the derby month itself. The famous ‘three runs in eight days’ are rather telling you know. Have a look at results over the years. For example, a certain Charlie Lister’s dogs over the last 10 years in this competition alone seemingly find that little bit extra as the competition gets to the nitty gritty stage. It’s the most unique competition there is. No one will remember the dog that took off in the second round. Or the dog that got within a length of the clock in the quarters. Qualifying is the highest aim; any win along the way is a bonus. We are learning all the time, whether you’re a punter, bookmaker, trainer or just a newbie. A derby not learning, is a derby wasted.

GREYHOUND ENTHUSIAST We are now in a sport that has pleasingly picked up again slowly over the last 12-18 months, it’s important that we cut out all the negativity and knocking. Opinions are fine, but they need to be detailed. Some of the criticism is well deserved, but a lot of it is inaccurate and unless you’ve personally been in a similar position. I suggest watching on and admiring what brilliance we are lucky enough to witness each year is made the key focus point.

Eske certainly has nothing to prove

Ballymac Eske was undoubtedly the huge talking point over the last six weeks. Expectedly so too after Barrie Draper’s charge had wrapped up the Scottish Derby in sublime fashion in early May. The dog was coming to Wimbledon with huge expectation. Unfortunately Eskes’s campaign came to an end in the semi-finals. But it was something I certainly wanted to touch on. While his achievements to date were remarkable and a strike rate that spoke for itself, what made Eske such an attraction in this year’s competition was the unshakeable bond he forged with the racing public. Let’s not take anything away from what he had done up until now. He was the only dog who had been unbeaten until the semi-final stage. He showed fantastic track craft and recorded some superior fast times along the way too. 28.21 in the second round and 28.37 in the quarters. As the competition started to grow and we got past the first round I personally felt like there was some sort of added pressure on this greyhound to perform. An awkward pressure, an unwanted pressure. I can’t stress or repeat myself enough to declare a loud cry at how unique this competition is. It really is like no other. It’s gruelling; it’s a stamina test rather than a sprint. Arguably many underestimate how demanding the six rounds actually are. When Ballymac Eske had been eliminated from the competition everyone seemingly turned into a qualified vet or a professional trainer. Wanting to voice their expert opinion and tell all the others where it had gone wrong. If anything, the dog seemed to look a little on the tired side. But who are we to comment? How many derby winners have we trained? Those ‘three runs in eight days’ have caught out the best in the past. So why would it change now? There were a lot of comments regarding his running style.

One of them being that he had lost his ‘early pace’. I’m not overly sure he has ever had exceptional early pace. Don’t get me wrong, he has certainly come away from time to time but he isn’t known for lid pinging. He has his own style of running whether that’s turning the bend in front, tracking the leaders or coming from out the clouds. It’s a sign of a good greyhound. And that is exactly what Ballymac Eske is. What Mr Draper’s charge achieved in this year’s greyhound derby is nothing short of excellent. Not only is he an exceptionally fast greyhound, he has promoted the sport in a fashion in which can only be described as positive. I’m now sure he will be given a deserved rest and I for one can’t wait to see him doing what he does best back on the sand in the near future.

BET365 are simply miles ahead

Our old friends BET365 announced their pre-tax profits earlier this month. And they will have come as no surprise to us punters who have been losing sleep, beside ourselves with anxiety that one of the world’s biggest bookies might just be kicking clear. 365 last month reported that pre-tax profits had jumped to £180 million in the space of just twelve months. The figures show that the Staffordshire based firm have profited over 50% since March 2012. Impressive. Now I’m not saying this racing desk in Stoke have managed to chop off 10 million by laying trap challenges, f/c doubles and the millions of lucky 15s. But I’m certainly not surprised with the figures, far from it in fact. The greyhound side of things within BET365 are pretty impressive in comparison to other high street bookmakers. Whichever meeting it may be. Romford on a Friday night, Newcastle on a Saturday or Coventry on a Sunday their prices are up in good time, if not first. Website wise, they are streets ahead too. I work within a football trading desk and again Bet365 are so far in front on that department it’s frightening. I think it’s virtually impossible to even contemplate catching them. There module is what other firms should and will unsurprisingly be looking to follow. Talking of Coventry on a Sunday night, it goes without saying it can only be a negative that it’s coming to an end on RPGTV. I struggle to see any valid reasons as to why

it would stop apart from the obvious. No disrespect to Henlow but it’s certainly not being swapped over from a public point of view. Coventry is undoubtedly one of the best tracks that we are lucky enough to view on channel 212 and it goes without saying that it will be sorely missed. Harry ‘the dog’ Findlay has really got the place going. The strict orders to make the Midlands track punter friendly is probably the reason why it is coming to an end. Bookmakers’ percentages on course are at an all-time low and it can only be that the channel sponsors feel it could be more profitable for them to show Henlow rather than Coventry.

Pre Season hatred, Ante Post deluxe

First week in July, the most dreaded time in the world for every footballer, yet the most beautiful sight on the calendar for every football punter. We have all just about got over last season. We have all just enjoyed a fantastic greyhound derby, but it’s now time to turn to Ante Post football markets. Most, if not all firms have priced up just about every league across Europe. Every golden boot market, every handicap market, you name it – it’s up. I haven’t really got too excited from what I’ve seen to date but I’m going to keep things fairly simple. Its 5/2 the field between Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea for the Premier league. By the time the season gets underway I expect Chelsea to be clear favourites. That said they do need to spend an appealing amount of money if they are to go on and win the league this season. The Mourinho Factor is obviously massive and he has never gone to any club without money on the table to get the ball rolling. The current Chelsea squad doesn’t have the depth to compete with the two Manchester clubs. But I fully expect to see three or four new faces at Stamford Bridge by the end of August. As for United, anyone who has an opinion on David Moyes appointment at Old Trafford before he has even picked a team sheet should step back and watch exactly what unfolds before coming up with any bold statements. What I will say is the ‘Ferguson factor’ could be pivotal come the end of this sea-

CALLUM PURDY son. I’m not too sure that teams will be as scared about their trip to Old Trafford as they may have been in the past. Again, that is probably a 7-9 point advantage as to what they would have had in previous years. The Premier League will be exciting this season for sure. You could make a case for all three teams. But with Mourinho having the form in the book, I just have to be with Chelsea. The two main selections I like come in league 1 & 2. League 1. Bristol City were relegated last season. They were quite frankly not good enough. They had a huge wage bill, a shambles of a management team and it was a club going in the wrong direction. Thankfully, all that has changed. They managed to bring in a professional in Sean O’Driscoll. They have managed to clear out a few of the big names on big contracts and have brought in some very equipped talents. Bristol City have been somewhat hidden by the high expectancy that Wolves have on their shoulders this year. The expectancy there is promotion. Let’s make no mistake here. If Wolves don’t get promoted this year it will be deemed a failure. That said, Bristol City have the right foundations in place. O’Driscoll, was surprisingly sacked at Nottingham Forest last season when he seemed to have turned them around. He is an old pro in this division and Bristol City, as cliché as it is seem to tick every box. Bristol City 11/1 to win League One. The best bet Ante Post comes in League Two. Fleetwood Town are a huge price to run away with League Two here. They have had a busy summer so far signing some very good players. Players that have played at a much higher standard. They seem to be doing things the right way at Highbury. They came up two seasons ago and were incredibly short to win the division last season. They seemed to try and walk before they could run and settled into the division at their own pace. They know that this is here to be won this season. They have signed the right players to do just that. They have the new ground, the facilities and everything seems to be in place. Raising awareness in the Derby T he English Derby has been a terrific event and as I type the winner is still unknown. The connections of Droopys Jet, Ballymac Vic, Sidaz Jack, Screen Critic Bittles Bar and Airlie Impact will by the time of reading know their fate. Whatever the result all six performed with brilliance to even reach the final. Ballymac Esk , the ante post favourite and fancy of many for outright honours unfortunately bit the dust at the semi-final stage. He’d not looked his usual self to me for a round or two before his departure and I wasn’t surprised to see him depart the competition before the final itself. That said class is permanent and I’m sure that we’ll be seeing him back to his best before long. Who knows, maybe even over six bends where he would be sure to take a lot of beating. Our own Derby runner, Head Case, was a first round casualty. He suffered badly when drawn in trap six for his first round heat and after some bad first bend trouble he could never get competitive. Still it was worth a try, The Derby is the competition that absolutely everybody wants to be involved in and he gave his team of owners an interest in the competition even if it was short lived. What it also did though was raise the profile of the cause for which he runs a little more, how many people knew about www. headcase.org.uk in the greyhound world before Head Case the dog came to run over here? Not many I’d guess.

OAK SET TO GROW FOR CYRIL & CREW

Our dog to follow from our kennel last month was Salacres Brent. I hope you paid attention as he won on his very first appearance after the magazine hit the shelf. Up in grade to A3 but that proved no problem as he stormed to an impressive victory at 5/2. Our dog to follow for this month is Salacres Oak. We’ve purchased a few decent dogs from the Francie Murray kennel over the past few

years and we’re hoping that this is another. He may well have got off the mark by the time of reading but regardless of that he will be a dog to keep on the right side of over the coming months. He’s a raw pup at the minute with a fair bit to learn, but Peter believes he has plenty of improvement in the locker and should be giving his fellow owners Cyril Bullock and Steve Hodgkinson plenty of fun. Talking of Cyril Bullock I’d like to take the opportunity to send him get well soon wishes. Cyril is a legend of the game and there doesn’t seem to be anybody at any track around the country who doesn’t know him. To the best of my knowledge Cyril is Nottingham’s longest standing patron and usually never misses a meeting. Forget all this computer wizardry that we all use these days, Cyril doesn’t need that, it’s all in his head. Get well soon Cyril all your mates down at the track are missing your tips and we’re slowly but surely going skint without you!

Exciting Litter

Myself and Peter headed over to Ireland since the last edition to pick up the Premier Fantasy x Queen Of Rangers litter. It will be a few months yet before you start seeing them hit the track but at this stage we’re pleased with how they’re going and with a bit of luck there might be a decent one or two amongst them. Their younger half brothers and sisters are also on the ground and look to be a highly promising bunch even at this very early stage of their lives. They’re all a nice size and Deirdre Walsh believes that they’re one of the most promising litters that she’s whelped. Given that she bred and reared the likes of Glanmire Lad you’d like to think Deirdre knows what she’s talking about. Blogging life on the road as a kennelhand

must start this blog off by saying that this month has definitely on the travelling front to other tracks been very quiet. Due to the fact we have given Gavin a rest. But what I must add is that I did have to pick up another dog from Chieveley services therefore I ended up buying the scarecrow, the picture on my granddad’s face when I came out with this women in a dress under my arm was a picture. Wednesday 5th June and I am watching the legend himself Gary Wiltshire on RPGTV and one of the greatest sayings I have ever heard was thrown out that night, and it goes a bit like this…‘only worry about time when your serving it’. Thursday 6th June, today is one of the hottest days of the year apparently, so I’ve decided that taking half a van of dogs swimming would be a good idea mid-afternoon when the sun is at its peak and I’m roasting where a dip in the water will be quite refreshing. What I didn’t expect was that high tide would be either 10am or 10pm…hmm the latter will probably be too dark, looks like we are going earlier than expected. Sometimes I question the things we do to get the best out of dogs. Ok, the sun is out, but it’s hardly roasting, 16c compared to 24c due this afternoon. Wow, I’m glad I have a wet suit, although a hot water bottle was necessary when I first dived in, ok not such a dive I tried to sound like David Hasslehoff then running along the beach with my body board ready to save someone, what really happened was that I

To be fair after my first swim I had warmed up and I felt like scuba Steve swimming around as I call myself! I had quite a few viewers, I would love to know what they are thinking, sarcasm doesn’t always go down to well with some especially when you tell them the dogs are training for the swimming pet Olympics. It’s turned out a beautiful afternoon in fact too hot, it’s never the right temperature here in England but whenever it’s this hot we all go all out to look like we’ve spent a week on the Saharan desert! However, I still look like I’ve spent a week in Russia! I seem to potter on as always paddocking dogs hardly sun bathing but still seem to get burnt. Sun stroke mixed with this plague like cold, I’m in a bad way. Saturday 8th June and we are racing at Poole, one winner tonight, Cashen Ras-

As many from Poole know this dog is literally a lunatic, I have to put boots on him when he’s kennelled at racing as does the brother ‘Dizzy’ because they literally scrape the door down, it certainly saves us ever clipping their nails! Sunday 9th June, I went out today in Southampton for a day out, whilst out I saw some buskers? If that’s what you call them. It’s quite amazing really what some people will do for a few quid, (clearly I’m on their side) this so called group were two lads with about sixteen plastic buckets, three saucepans and a cymbal but I must say they got a crowd and were very good. At least if it all goes wrong with the dogs they have given me an idea I could have a crack at. Tuesday 11th back racing at Poole and we’ve had a night which you would say is good for trio backers! Making the frame was all we done with five out of six runners.

Thursday 13th Someone must have read my last column as I’m heading off to football training, yes I’ve been signed by Parkstone FC! Go on you bumblebees! Well we are playing in Borussia Dortmund yellow and black stripes. It was good to be back playing football, but more importantly, something else is back (guilt pleasure)… “you are live on channel five please do not swear, the lines are shut, the votes are in and verified,” ok you must have guessed, it’s Big Brother. I must say my Sky box will probably blow up now as I have so much recording. This blog is definitely taking a back seat though with the derby and other sporting fixtures. Sometimes you sit there and think about things and one thing that is playing on mind is ‘sayings’ at this current moment I’m feeling on top of the world, so some would say ‘like a kid in a candy shop?’ But I am bored if this one so I will be searching for a new one.

Saturday 15th and I done a few miles driving in one direction to pick something up then back the other way to the kennels, racing in the evening. Believe it or not I must say I had a lovely ham roll at Poole for dinner, the chef must be away on holiday. Third round of the derby features on the tele tonight and Eske still makes me nervous, watching him qualify for the next round of the derby; I just feel involved with this dog as I’ve followed him from day one and bet him most of the time. We had a few new dogs running tonight and they could be worth following, so I will add them at the end of this column. It’s now Sunday and I have had Jason Day and Mickleson in front in the US Open golf and Rose is bang in contention, rose hit’s a beauty to 18 and I can hear granddad down stairs shouting wo wo wo, I’m shouting go go go, keep running. I know he’s English and patriotism but money on the line is different. It’s over and so is my money on those two clowns, I’ve come to the decision golf and me are like north and south, they are not supposed to be near one another whether that’s betting or on the course. In terms of betting I am the Tudor Prince in the greyhound world, ‘the bridesmaid’ (I loved that dog)…and on the course I am the England football team, you just don’t know who’s turning up, the team who beats brazil or the one who lose to Moldova! Next…cricket??? What did we learn yesterday? The lovely Emma Willis likes a man with turned up jeans, I better get the sewing kit out! 19th June, Humid? Who even invented that word? It just doesn’t make sense? What about sweating? That’s more appropriate. Half way through the forest with a few of the kennel and eleven dogs the weather makes you feel like you’ve been sat in a locked car in a plastic bag! Dogs enjoyed their paddle in the stream though. It’s evening now, and I thought I would be toasting my life to ‘tyrur sugar ray’ as he got me on the way to high rollers but it all went downhill the day I bet Camelot… again! I seriously tonight considered putting myself up for sale, but then a winner came along in the shape of Fiontra Molly…I love this bitch, I looked the day before and fancied her! I’ve taken an interest in watching Ascot, usually flat racing is not my scene but it’s growing on me. The news last week of the passing of Sir Henry Cecil was heart breaking to all but watching Riposte accelerate down the run in under the hands of Tom Queally was quite moving and put a tear in many eyes. That one’s for you Sir Henry. You don’t realise until things like this happen how precious life is and so enjoy what you have while you can. It’s Saturday the 22nd and we had 6 runners tonight, to be honest they were all up against it but the one of the lunatic duo, Cashen Dizzy won tonight, believe me, if you could work these two dogs out you would probably crack the davinci code. Ballymac Guest looks like she’s on the comeback after literally exploding the boxes in 4.26 but unlucky at the 3rd bend cost her the race, she will be back winning soon. Other things I must add that will be upcoming before the next month are that the Sunderland Classic starts and I feel a man who’s column is probably two pages from me Mr Rab McNair will have an ultrastrong hand in with Skate On, Shaneboy Alley and Spencer and I will definitely want to be on side with Spencer! In other sports, Wimbledon will be getting under way so don’t expect any sunshine! Victoria Azarenka in the ladies and Federer in the mens. Finally one bet that will throw you all is, Sophie to be top female in Big Brother at 15/8...Launch! Be Lucky!

We have a selection of new dogs on the card, and have all had 1 race for us and look like they will be worth following in the coming months. Firstly I will put up a little bitch called Cashen Arianna, she will not set the world alight but should be a nice little grader who will win a few racers for connections. Also a stunning looking fawn bitch called Cashen Mischief who is only a December 11 whelp so at present she is very puppyish, she has shown she has a nice zip of early which is key at Poole and I feel that when she finds her feet she will definitely be one to side with.

OUT AND ABOUT WITH KAAN Cashen Matteo is on the comeback trail after having a cough and being so young and highly regarded we wouldn’t rush him back, he trialled well at Poole and will now be in preparation for the puppy cup at Hove in August. Eden Rumble has had a month on his bed as he has had some hard runs and there is 3 quick races coming up at Poole, the first 2 being over 6 bends and the 3rd all being well hopefully our target is the Marathon at Poole finals night where I have always said that if I gave him a proper marathon then I would try him there as 840m isn’t the hardest gallop. We should have some new stock coming over next month which I will update you with in the next column. As always we are continuously getting new dogs sent too us from people I have ultimate trust in and they are available for ownership solely or syndication to stay in the kennel. I must start this section off by saying a huge congratulations to Phil Chatfield a Poole trainer who managed to win a heat of the derby with Farkland Tyson, some achievement, well done. Poole stages the Golden Crest which carries a prize of £3000, starting on July 2nd and this is open to 24 greyhounds with the semis on the 6th and final on the 13th. All rounds hold supporting opens and hopefully will attract some good entries. Leading local runners to be noted should include, Farkland Tyson who speaks for himself trained by Philip Chatfield who won this race last year with Out in Chil, also from the home track Coolykereen Hi who has been a grand servant and continuously up there as one of the best local dogs for some time now and finally Newly acquainted Darian Chief will also have a strong hand in the event all being well. Outside entries trial Tuesday so we should know more then. As ever the competition looks like it’s going to be a great event which I will give you a full run down of in next month’s edition.

ell another year goes by but the story stays the same – the William Hill English Derby Final will be contested by 6 Irish greyhounds: T1: Bought out of Galway track T2: Trained in Ireland, bred in Waterford and started his career at Thurles T3: Trained in Ireland, bred in Kerry and started at Tralee T4: Bought out of Shelbourne Park and bred in Wexford T5: Trained by an Irishman for a syndicate of Irish men and bred in County Down T6: Bought out of Clonmel track and bred in Tyrone British breeding is at an all-time low but the ‘powers that be’ don’t seem too bothered – well why would they be when they have a direct pipeline across the Irish Sea? But surely that is very short-sighted. If (when?) the Irish supplies dry up (and they have slowed down from a flood to a trickle in recent years) where will the bookmaker owned tracks get their ‘product’ from? I have been fairly strong on de Twitter in my mickey taking of some of the English

media commentators and outlets about what they deem to be ‘English greyhounds’. While there is a serious point here to be made, I must be completely honest and admit I was messing about almost all of the time whilst genuinely trying to get someone to ‘bite’. The bait wasn’t strong enough obviously. Irish breeders have been suffering for several years now and more and more are getting out. The man or woman that breeds 10 or 20 litters a year is still there as a rule, but the folk that breed 1 or 2 litters a year are getting out in their droves. And these ‘little guys’ outnumber the big breeders 100 to 1. These are the bread and butter breeders and their sacrifices have been great while rewards were always very slim. They generally are (were) of a type; they sell 4 or 5 out of a litter and keep a couple for racing. They would nearly cover the costs of the litter once they sold the racers after a couple of wins. The problems are numerous but the main 2 are that total Irish prize money levels has been obliterated in the last 5 years with many tracks running 8 or 9 race cards and some tracks down to

just one night a week. The other (greater) issue is that the English buyers are simply not there now unless you are practically giving them away. I have been banging this little drum of mine for a while, mainly because I empathise with Irish breeders (being a part-time breeder myself). But I also empathise with British breeders. They are doing the same thankless tasks for little or no reward 365 days a year. And they are fewer in number every year. You have to feel for them. This year’s William Hill Derby has been the best renewal in years. Don’t take my word for it, just read any forum or message board. OK, Charlie Lister said it’s nowhere near the best (although I suspect that opinion will have changed somewhat if Sidaz Jack has obliged at the weekend). The Mudros Maestro claims Some Picture’s Derby was the best. We can’t possibly know if this year’s was any good in the grand scheme of things until sometime has elapsed, but what most of us enthusiasts mean when we say it is a good renewal is that it has been exciting, open, sporting. It has been a brilliant advert for the sport, even if the quality is not un-

disputedly the greatest. And I think a lot, if not all, of the credit must go to the sponsors who boosted prize money to a level where in real terms it is worth 30% more to the winner than the Irish Derby. Every single race has been live on television too making it the most accessible Derby of all time. So if you are reading this Kate Miller how about adding an incentive for the poor suffering breeder? In Ireland the breeder gets 10% of the Derby purse? How about offering 5% if the dog is Irish bred and 10% if it is British bred? That might get the ball rolling.

Champion Trent A Boost For Bucks

The Boylesports Race Of Champions went the way of the Pat Buckley trained Farloe Trent. Another product of the Limavaddy Academy the Javier Jarne owned black son of Hondo Black and Final Pearl (who is a sister of Fear Zafonic) smashed the 2 year old track record previously held by Deerfield Music. To knock 9 spots off the clock despite not leading until the 3rd bend is some run. Yes the track will have been ‘very good’ but this is a ‘stand up and take notice’ performance by the Cappawhite kennelled puppy. It might be a bit soon to be talking about the Irish Derby for this youngster but do not rule out at a tilt at the big one. Well done Bucks.

Consistent Bridie Gets Hennessy His Oaks

The big night at Tralee was carried live on RTE2 (terrestrial TV) which was great for Tralee and great for the sport itself. However on the following night one of the biggest events in Irish racing took place at Shelbourne Park: the Sporting Press Irish Oaks Final. Why this is no longer screened I have no idea. Could the IGB not get somebody to screen this? We have A9s coming from Sunderland into our living room in Tipperary after all. A friend of mine made a good point which was to say that the market for wellbred bitches has never been so bad – and it’s not a coincidence that the bitch Classic is no longer deemed important enough to screen any longer. The Irish Oaks was won by Locnamon Bridie. The best way to describe Bridie is to say she is a ‘proper bitch’. She has won 13 of her 46 races and has not been out of the frame in her last 15, all at the highest level. Her last 4 runs in the Oaks have been remarkable in terms of her clocks: 28.23, 28.32, 28.22, 28.35. Talk about a model of consistency! She smashed up in 28.15 just before Christmas too and headed to HQ this Summer on the back of a super Roches Feeds Oaks win at Limerick.

Another big winner for Paul Hennessy – his first Irish Oaks if I am not mistaken (corrections on a postcard please) – and the daughter of Royal Impact and Locnamon Nell was bred in Kilkenny by Ger Langton. The line has been very successful in recent years. Locnamon Nell is a litter sister of Gifted Sir who won the Tipperary Cup at Thurles 7 years ago (I was there that night is it really 7 years?). A half-brother of Gifted Sir was the 2009 Tote Gold Cup winner Swords Prince who is making a good start to his career at stud. The Irish Oaks this year looks to be a very solid renewal on paper and there were some serious times posted throughout the stake this year. I would imagine a couple of these ladies will appear in the Irish Derby this year and I would be surprised if they are simply running for the sake of it

Nothing Like A Galway Girl

Galway is a great track. Pound for pound, leaving HQ out of the equation, it must be my favourite track to just ‘go racing’. This July sees the return of the famous Tyrur Champion Bitch Stake. Previously won by Slick Sioux, Newbridge Jewel, Cherokee Lady, Friedels Save, Side Saga and probably the best winner Handy Princess, there will be great interest in this year’s event which starts on 11th July, worth ten grand to the winner. Big Road ranked number 1 BY MICHAEL D. FRINO It didn’t take long for Big Road to reach the top of the mountain…or in his case…the top of the United Greyhound Racing Top 25 Poll. What did it take for him to reach that lofty status? Let’s start with the fact he captured Southland Park’s Hound Madness with five consecutive wins against some stellar competition. His only loss in the Hound Madness was to Wwk Cold March, who he defeated in the following round to begin his win streak and road to the championship. The February 2011 pup then followed his championship by making the finals of the Spring Futurity which was scheduled for May 3rd. Big Road runs for the Jeff Lovely Kennel and is trained by Randy Blair. He is owned by Paul V. Ryan. The 77 lb. male is the son of Kelsos Fusileer and Lacy Jean. UGR’s top ranked performer fits the Southland oval just perfectly, running the rail and possessing a strong finish. Along with his 583 yd. stake’s championship, Big Road also has a career win at the 3/8th distance. His strength should be of no surprise as his mother was a good 3/8ths and marathon greyhound. His maternal grand dam is Bellerose who produced some very talented greyhounds including Inspecda Deck... the undefeated winner of the 2005 Lincoln American Derby. Caterwaul) appears in the top 25 for the third straight time. He has been a model of consistency as he was ranked #10 and #4 in the previous two UGR polls. The 2012 All-American from Bluffs Run finished a close second to Big Road for the top spot. He too captured a stake’s championship winning the Team Survivor Series. Avatar also recorded four consecutive wins twice in the two month rating period for owners Tom Sugihara and Robert Hardison. A couple of “Flying” greyhounds owned by Vince Berland occupy the next two spots in the top 25. Flying DiMarco ranks #3, as the son of Iruska All Star-Flying Beem caught fire at the Naples-Fort Myers track and ran off 13 straight wins before losing his next race by a head. DiMarco, who runs for the Kelly Everett Kennel, shook off the loss and won his very next start. The only query with Flying DiMarco is that he did not have the opportunity to race against the likes of J’s Robin and Oakland Medusa during his win streak. But with his two month record showing only that one loss and the most first place finishes of any greyhound in our poll, he certainly has earned the accolades of a high ranking. The 4th ranked greyhound is Flying DiCaprio (Flying Hydrogen x Pf Flyer) from Southland. Another greyhound possessing a

strong finish, DiCaprio won 7 of 10 races in the two month period, and 3 out of 4 to finish the month of April. The 2012 RLC Series finalist runs for the T & T Kennel. The American Derby Champion-Moms Hellion-takes the 5th place ranking with a memorable performance in the prestigious Mardi Gras race. While many were anticipating a Moms Hellion and Smokey Joe match race for the 3/8th’s Derby Championship, Hellion had other ideas and swept both of the series final rounds to claim the championship outright. Just a month earlier, Moms Hellion (Coldwater Torres x Instant Vintage) finished 3rd in the World Classic and 4th in the Joe Ryan Jr. Memorial. In the months of March and April, he had a record of 5 wins in 9 starts and never finished worse than third. Hellion runs for the DQ Williams Kennel and is owned by Tina M Williams. Derby Lane’s Se’s Home Owner garners the 6th ranking in the UGR poll. Home Owner is another 3/8th specialist, and won all five rounds of the Derby Lane Distance Classic to claim the championship. UGR poll member and the voice of Derby Lane, Jim Peake, pointed out that Owner was the first greyhound to win all five rounds of the Derby since Talentedmrripley did the same in 2002. That puts Home Owner in pretty good company. The talented greyhound was

Se’s Home Owner (Kiowa WW Brother x Se’s Fancy Pants) is owned by Richard Armington Jr. and ran at Derby Lane for Red Oak Racing. He will be racing for the Magic City Kennel at Southland and is expected to run in the Razorback Classic. Smokey Joe, who is ranked 7th, was shipped to Mardi Gras from Gulf Greyhound Park to compete in the American Derby. The two year old pup, by Flying Penske and out of Okgo Box To Wire, proceeded to win the first 4 rounds of the Derby and was the favorite going into the finals. Smokey Joe ended up as runner up in the American Derby finals. His defeat to Moms Hellion in the final two rounds takes little away from his dominating performances in the preliminary rounds. Smokey Joe is owned by Norm Rader and Edward Gardner, and ran for the Joe Trudden Kennel. He was shipped to Southland to the Gloria Dorsey Kennel, and won his first start as he too preps for an expected appearance in the Razorback Classic. A second greyhound from Bluffs RunSweet Finish- grabs the #8 ranking in the poll. Kiowa Sweet Trey certainly throws early speed into many of his offspring, and it seems that is just what he gave his son Sweet Finish. The early speedster won 7 of 11 races in March/April, and twice had 3 race win streaks. Sweet Finish is owned by Mike and Terry Carroll, and is with Petzold Racing. Atascocita Henri (Rhythmless x Atascocita Style) makes his second straight appearance in the UGR Top 25 poll and claims the 9th spot in the rankings. Henri continued his winning streak that started in early February, and won 9 in a row before tasting defeat on the last day of March. He won 6 of 7 in March and April, closing out with 3 straight wins. Atascocita Henri showcased his talent at Palm Beach in the St. Patrick Day Invitational winning by a convincing seven lengths in a quick 29.32. Palm Beach’s top greyhound is owned by Atascocita Racing. Another greyhound making her third straight poll appearance is WwK Win Day from Wheeling. She takes the final spot in the top 10, and is the first female to appear in

this poll. WwK Win Day is another talented daughter of Flying Penske and is out of the nice dam Gale WW Ebb Tide. The David Cahill owned greyhound won 6 of 10 races in the two month period, and shows a 5 race win streak that started in late February. She races for the Wayne Ward Kennel. Win Day secured the #10 ranking with a win in her last start in April, and dropped kennel mate WW Kay Boxer to the 11th spot. Seven greyhounds that were ranked in UGR’s last poll were also ranked in this poll. In addition to the greyhounds mentioned above, Top Of The Pile (BR) advanced from #23 to #12 in this poll. Ramsey Ram (TS), who was 4th in the last poll, now is ranked at #22. A couple of Derby Lane athletes-Lilly Rose and Ed N Eddie- now rank #23 and #25 respectively. Lily Rose was previously #13 and Edd N Eddie was ranked the same in both UGR polls at #25. I also want to mention Foolish Times (GG), ranked #18 in this poll, as she was a “just missed” at #27 in the previous poll. Two classy greyhounds that are consistently in, or just outside the top 25, are J’s Robin and Oakland Medusa…both presently racing at the Naples/Fort Myers track.

How the Poll Works.

The UGR Top 25 Poll utilizes two score components plus bonus points/adjustments in three other categories to give each greyhound a final point total or score.

One score is derived from the greyhound’s individual ranking at their home track. It constitutes approximately two-thirds of the final point total. The rankings are done by poll members representing each of the tracks. The poll members rank the greyhounds they chose as the top five greyhounds presently running at their track. The greyhounds receive points depending on their ranking. The points are weighted according to Track’s Power Rating (TPR) designated by UGR. The TPR will be adjusted when necessary, as the competition level may change at some of the tracks during the year. The second major component is derived from the UGR Rating Formula based on top grade win percentage, stakes race performance (first and second place), and consecutive wins. Points are again weighted depending on the track’s TPR, and also adjusted for the greyhounds that had limited starts. UGR understands the subjective components of the poll, and plans to tweak the ranking system when necessary to make the poll as fair as possible. Ten major tracks were included in this poll, resulting in fifty greyhounds receiving a final score. The greyhounds were evaluated based on their 2013 performances in March and April. Greyhounds not racing in the month of April were not eligible. Any accolades or records from a prior period were not considered in this poll.
