WELCOME TO GREYHOUND EXPRESS ‘Show Of Passion’ at London City Hall

Plenty of passion about

Get in touch: greyhounds2008@live.co.uk or Twitter @micklivesey

I

must start this by saying a huge congratulations to everyone who attended the ‘Show Of Passion’ with people from all over the UK and Ireland coming together to demonstrate their unity and love for Wimbledon greyhound stadium. Everyone who turned up, was involved in organizing the event deserve a huge pat on the back and let’s hope it does some good. It certainly raised the profile of our sport. There is a much larger picture involved here for me, our country is shutting down social venues left, right and centre. There is a lot more going on at greyhound tracks than dogs racing around a track. I mentioned this on twitter and was overwhelmed with the response of how many people had started friendships, relationships (both personal and business) and

even marriages at the dogs. How can you put a monetary value on that social aspect of greyhound racing? For me you can’t it is priceless. No sooner had the dust settled on the brilliant Show Of Passion when the sad news broke that Coventry would close. My thoughts and feelings with all the staff, trainers and owners at this very sad time. Coventry had one of the best running surfaces in our sport today and this came out of the blue (well certainly to me) I was writing the preview for their upcoming Emerald Cup when I heard the news. On the track, I don’t know about you but I’ve loved the festivals (Betfred and Pinpoint) and the brilliant Ladbrokes Golden Jacket. It’s been action of the highest order and when you think what lies ahead in the

coming weeks and months it is a very exciting time to be involved in the sport of greyhound racing. Like always you can check the reviews and previews of the brilliant action, plus we welcome some new columnists to the magazine this month. Greyhound Express is continuing to grow at a rapid rate of knots and in no small part that is down to you, so thank-you for your amazing support and I hope you keep enjoying the magazine. If you can support the magazine, website and podcast with advertising or sponsorship please do so, our advertisers have had some great results. More people read Greyhound Express than any other greyhound magazine! MICK LIVESEY

fantastic competition over 400M at Romford that always attracts a high class entry. No matter who arrives at the Essex venue the greyhound they all have to beat is Dower Matt. Ernie Gaskin’s charge is an high class speedster who is one of the star attractions in our sport today. This fella can smash 3.60 sectionals and 24.00 for fun, he’s a course and distance best of 3.55 and a end time of 23.66. If he repeats that level of form during this competition he will be very difficult to beat, it would take a remarkable effort to stop him being crowned the champion. Long-term this could be the start of something special, he’s around an 100/1

The one they all have to beat

shot with the sponsors for the Derby and i’ve seen worst bets than that. Lee Dangerfield (kennel-hand) said: “We will keep him at Romford for the Golden Sprint, then we will look at taking him to Wimbledon, he’s a greyhound that comes on the more looks at a track he gets, he is quality and can break from most traps with his early he can be a real force not only in the Golden Sprint but also the Derby.” If Dower Matt was to make a mistake there is real quality waiting in the wings; Guinness Sky is more than capable along

with Southern Mesut but both have been beaten convincing by Matt but if your looking for an each-way punt either of those fit the bill. It will be interesting to see what price Dower Matt is when the market opens, he will not be big but if Ernie Gaskin and his team can keep him in this top form he should win. Whoever wins this quality competition even though it is over 400M is sure to head to Wimbledon for a crack at the Derby and this race may once again throw up a Derby winner.

hen you start looking at the previous winners it gives you a feel for just how amazing this competition really is some of the biggest names in the sport in recent times have won this great competition. When you think about the dogs who ran in this competition but never won it you realise it is extra special, greyhounds like Derby winner Kinda Ready and Oaks winner Freedom Emma could only manage 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 2009 final which was won by the 2010 Derby champion Bandicoot Tipoki. If you want future champions then this is the race for you! his competition always excites me, every year it throws up future champions and never fails to get the pulse racing. Farloe Nutter for top Scottish handler Craig Dawson is a pup that has the profile of a future champion. He possesses all the

T

Farloe Nutter

attributes to make it to the very top, he left greyhound judges in awe after his recent performance at Newcastle in the Pinpoint festival, he is one of the most exciting greyhounds to emerge this year, he turns two in April so this is his last chance on the puppy scene, I think he will move into all aged company with a bang. Farloe Nutter will surely be at the head of the betting but we are genuinely blessed right now for talented youngsters. Seamus Cahill trained Droopys Jarrow is a real talent and can give any dog a run for their money on his day. John Mullins trained Swift Suarez is another greyhound that is exciting, he looks to be highly progressive he does not turn two until August and that could be the difference but it would be brave to discount him. You could mention a dozen highly rated

youngsters and this promises to be a high class affair like always, it will be very exciting and it is sure to throw up a number of greyhounds that must be followed for the remainder of the year. It is open for debate which is the biggest race for the puppies in the calendar, the Puppy Derby at Wimbledon may have the history but for me in recent years this competition is just about the biggest and hardest puppy competition to win. Ladbrokes and Monmore deserve huge credit although that centre piece is their Puppy Derby they’ve put together a festival of racing. First-Round 10th March with Finals on 14th March they include a 630m competition worth £5,000 and a dog and bitch competition each carrying a winner’s prize of £1,000. Friday 14th March Monmore is the place to be that is for sure — well done Ladbrokes!

Just the word Derby fills me with excitement and thanks to RPGTV we all can see every round of this amazing competition that is quite literally steeped in history. It’s the first leg of the Triple Crown, will this be the year that a greyhound reigns triumphant at Shawfield, Wimbledon and then Shelbourne Park? Probably not but you never know. There used to be a million pound bonus for any greyhound pulling off this Herculean feat, I’ve not heard it mentioned for a couple of years but it used to add a little to the excitement. This competition’s been wowing greyhound fans since 1928 and one thing that is for sure wow moments are once more guaranteed this year.

S

cottish handlers do not have a great record in their classic with no recent winner (unless you include Scottish born Irish handler Frazer Black who won it with Droopys Marco) but they’ve had some near misses. Pat Flaherty is one of those that have come mighty close he was double handed in last year’s final and his third Greenwell Mentor looks to have appeal. In December he scorched around Belle Vue recording a scintillating 27.52 twice, he beat Under-

ground Paul, Farloe Warhawk and a host of other stars at the zoo. However Pat’s best chance may lie with his litter-sister Greenwell Lark who finished 5th in last year’s classic but did post a 28.90 +10 which is phenomenal over course and distance. Maybe just maybe this could be Pat Flaherty’s year he finally lifts the trophy. However it will be tough, last year’s winner Ballymac Eske who is an absolute star will hopefully turn up to try and retain the

SHAWFIELD

crown he won so brilliantly twelve-months ago. He’s had a start stop campaign since the Derby but Barrie Draper and connections will stand every chance if he turns up 100%. This race is sure to be way over subscribed and I do not envy the racing manager whittling the entrants down to thirtysix. I decided to catch up with Pat and get his thoughts on the upcoming classic and ask

him if this could be the year he achieves his lifelong goal and which greyhound he thought gave him the best chance of realising that dream. “It’s so difficult so many good dogs about, we’ve been trying to win this race for thirty-years, being a proud Scot this is the race I’d dearly love to win, we should have a nice team and will give it a good go that is for sure. “Greenwell Lark is perhaps our best chance she’s strong and Shawfield suits

her more than her brother (Mentor) he just finds the 480M around there a touch too far but if he came away you never know but he must come away. “Lark had a wee shoulder niggle, we left her off and she’s very well, I’d say she is a better greyhound this time around. You need that bit of luck but hopefully this could be our year after coming so close in the past, good luck to everyone who enters and look forward to welcoming everyone to Scotland for our big night of the year.”

LADBROKES TRAINERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

Cahill could be the value TUESDAY 25TH MARCH LIVE ON SKY-SPORTS

This is one of the most incredible nights in the calendar - the six top trainers on a point’s basis from 2013 do battle in a bid to win the night. How they finished in 2013 1 - Mark Wallis 2 - Charlie Lister OBE 3 - Paul Young 4 - Chris Allsopp 5 - Seamus Cahill 6 - Barrie Draper When you start to think about the stars that these six kennels have at their disposal you start to get the feeling just how exciting this night will truly be. This promises to be a right battle all the way to the last race — the teams have not been announced so will be hard to predict. Mark Wallis and Charlie Lister OBE are sure to dominate the betting but it may prove wise to side with Seamus Cahill at what should be a decent price; the likes of Chicago, Guinness Spark, Guinness Sky, Droopys Posh, Droopys Jarrow, Droopys Odell, Lukes Tribute, Islas Scolari, Derrane Nick, Musical Fawn and no doubt one or two others to choose from it looks like team Cahill have an embarrassment of riches to select from and but for bad luck would have been even stronger. Some of those names mentioned are real battlers and that is what you need, if you don’t win you must still score big points by coming second or third. That is the key to success on these sort of nights. Check out the Sport Newspaper for prices and big race selections and don’t forget you can join me on the night @SkyGreyhounds for full tips and information from 7pm.

RACING POST JUVENILE

I’m going to join the Mileheight Club!

Ballymac Eske wins in 2013

LIVE ON SKY-SPORTS TUESDAY MARCH 4TH (£5,000 TO THE WINNER) INVITEES: (TO BE CONFIRMED) Adageo Bob - M Wallis Droopys Odell - S Cahill Jaytee Lightening - P Young Mileheight Alba - P Rosney Redbrick Stuart - C Lister OBE Vanrooney - Owen McKenna (Eire) 2013 Laurels Champion Mileheight Alba for Lancashire’s top trainer Pat Rosney looks to have the speed to trouble any greyhound, only the other day he flew around Belle Vue in a trial clocking a mind boggling 27.48. If he gets T1, T2 or T3 I truthfully believe he will not only win the Juvenile but he could go a very long way in this year’s £200,000 Derby, maybe even be the dog to bring that trophy back to Lancashire. Pat Rosney’s base is no stranger to big race success at Wimbledon before Pat took over it was the home of Lancashire legend Jimmy Gibson, since Pat and his wife Julie have taken over the reins one tradition remained constant big race winners. If memory serves me right it was Pat walking out the 2002 Derby finalist Pilot Alert for then his boss Jimmy. Windy Millar looked set to go a long way in the classic for Pat in his own right before disaster struck in the quarter-final when 1/2 on favourite, so maybe there is some unfinished business in the capital for team Rosney and it can start here by taking the Juvenile. The race title may be The Racing Post Juvenile but in everything but name it is a

William Hill Derby trial stake of the highest order. What better preparation is there for the biggest race in the world and this year Owen McKenna brings over Irish Puppy Derby winner Vanrooney and the other runners are without doubt top class. It won’t be easy to win but I could not oppose Mileheight Alba and I thought it would be a good idea to catch up with Pat Rosney and get his thoughts. “Mick he’s super-fast, definitely right up there with the best dogs I’ve handled but he does have one weakness; he’s draw dependant. If he’s drawn further out than trap-three we are in trouble, if he gets his

draw we can match it with the best of them. Will he win the Juvenile? If he’s on the end of a good draw I don’t see why not. “Can he win the Derby? Again if he gets the draws then I honestly think he can go a very long way, deep into the competition and once there you never know. The dogs very well and we will head to Wimbledon to give him a trial before the race, once we get past the Juvenile it will be all about the Derby for us, we are going to give it our best shot.” A real treat for greyhound fans the Juvenile is part of a double header with the Springbok live on Sky-Sports, it promises to be a must watch for all fans!

WIMBLEDON Chicago

Mileheight Alba is without doubt right up there with the fastest I’ve trained. One weakness though is that he’s draw dependent. PAT ROSNEY (pictured)

Dromin blunts Razor in Sky Sports thriller H all Green hosted the second Sky meeting of the year and let’s be honest it looked a very good card without looking like it was out of this world (often the Sky cards do) but it was thrilling and we had more drama unfold than in an episode of EastEnders. It turned out to be very special and one that will live long in the memory banks. There is just something about greyhound racing on Sky-Sports, its magical, long may it continue, even the torrential rain could not stop the greyhounds from shining brightly.

T

he 2014 Partex Marking Systems Prestige left me bereft of speech (I know what you’re thinking) but it truly did, I was left shocked. All the talk in the buildup was would Senior Cup the Belle Vue raider or Blonde Razor for champion trainer Mark Wallis win this quality race. Lids opened and Blonde Razor cracked out, it’s a good job you cannot bet in running because I would now be broke, Razor looked sharp and back to his brilliant best and anyone who took the 7/1 ante-post started to form an orderly queue to be paid out. What happened in the latter stages rocked the greyhound world when Scala Dromin started to hit top gear, the gap looked too big but nobody told Dromin, he ran down the brilliant Blonde Razor with a sublime power packed finish. Stuart Buckland’s charge got up to win the 5,000 first prize by 1.25L at 7/1 in 40.66 -105. Without question the rain soaked track, the going being -105 all played a part in Blonde Razor being run down but that is greyhound racing here in the UK. We must celebrate and applaud a great champion in Scala Dromin and the brilliant job Stuart Buckland did. It was a great night for the kennel who landed a 63/1 double live on Sky-Sports

RESULTS: HALL GREEN PRESTIGE Supreme Turbo

when Supreme Turbo ran very well to take the puppy race earlier in the night.

SUPPORTING CARD

I wrote on the twitter account I guarantee wow moments but I must confess that I did not expect the drama we had. Wee Tiger Tots kicked off the live TV action with a real bang, she’s got all the ingredients to make it to the very top of the sprinting ranks under the expert guidance of Rab and Liz McNair, on only her first look at the Midlands venue she exploded from the traps, even swinging off wide around the last could not prevent a brilliant victory over Aero Twizzle in 15.71 -30. Supreme Turbo took the puppy race with a trap to line victory in 29.44 -60. The winner was impressive but also the runner-up Swift Suarez, he had to ride a few bumps but looks very much like a youngster to keep on your side, sure to be a player in the upcoming big puppy competitions. The best backed greyhound of the day

was Enda Causeway, supporters had a few scary moments when Incitatus was away and gone with a five length lead, Causeway though showed electric pace from three-quarters (dare I say Tango like) this was very impressive and no doubt we have unearthed a new marathon star here, she stopped the clock in 57.67 -120. King Danni ensured the McNair’s had a good night with an impressive front running display over 645m, she never looked in danger having 3.25L in hand at the winning line in 40.54 -90. Highview Creek was a new name to me if I am honest, he made sure the track knowledge he’s required in A1’s was used in good effect, he was brave at the corner and once in front never looked like getting beat, he stopped the clock in an impressive 29.18 -60, be interesting to see if they take him on the road now, surely he’s earned that right. Aayamzabella was on the end of a shocking trap-five draw, when she broke and forced her way over to the rails and hitting

the front it looked race over. It was however another wow moment and probably due to the conditions the wheels fell well and truly off, this opened the door for the rest, it was Burgess Borna who seized that opportunity winning by a head over Supreme Rossie 58.06 -140. Some astute Irish judges are tipping her for TV Trophy glory later in the year, on this evidence I would not argue. Garryglass Rodge is probably the closest railer in greyhound racing, so when he was housed in trap-four you could be forgiven for thinking he had plenty to worry about, at his best though he is a class act and he overcame this adversity in style, he seems to be learning how to handle these nonfavorable draws, he hit the front around the second bend and ran out a comfortable winner in 29.37 -70. Mark Wallis his trainer said “He was a good dog in 2013, I honestly think he will be a better greyhound this year and we are looking forward to his campaign.”

http://norahmacracingclub.co.uk/

Mick Livesey on Norah McEllistrim, Norah Mac is no stranger to big race success in 2013 she trained the brilliant Ballymac Marine to race through unbeaten in the £8,000 Romford Puppy Cup. A real talented trainer and I am tipping Norah’s racing club to be a huge success and is highly recommended!!!

Mission; The Norahmac Racing Club was formed in February, 2011 by Norah McEllistrim and a number of long-standing owners within the kennel. Our mission is to have regular runners and winners. We offer an affordable interest in greyhound racing and breeding with thrills, fun and social events on and off course! RESULTS: BETFRED FESTIVAL

Festival was just like stepping back in time T he mere mention of the word ‘festival’ used to fill me with dread (I had a bad experience once at Glastonbury) but now it fills me with excitement and that is thanks to Betfred sponsoring a thrilling greyhound festival. It was like stepping back in time to the so called glory days in the sport’s rich history; packed stadium, full restaurant and a vibrant betting market (all this on a Tuesday night). One thing that is a racing certainty is these festival nights are in my mind the future of the sport. TV coverage takes away from people attending at the stadiums some of the critics shout but in fact the evidence points to exactly the opposite, this great evening was screened live on Sky Sports 2 and without question was a fantastic advertisement for the sport of greyhound racing. Betfred, Sheffield and Sky Greyhounds deserve the plaudits. The night had a massive 16 top-class races for fans of this amazing sport to feast on, the stars of the show the dogs themselves shone brightly. Three £2,000 finals on the night served up real spectacles and the best place for us to start the review.

Betfred Goals Galore Final Odell Is On Target

Droopys Odell is a greyhound very much racing at the top of his game at the moment, he came in for huge support evens into 8/13, so you can imagine the Cahill runner was a very popular winner. When you see Odell clad in the red jacket it spells danger for the opposition, not for one minute saying he is draw dependant but he’s ultra-effective when in trap-one. He did not break in his best fashion but had enough pace to see him fly up the inside and come out of the opening bend in front, the cheer went up and his supporters never had an anxious moment from then on. He ran out a comfortable 2L winner in 28.94 -10 over Whiterock.

RESULTS: BETFRED FESTIVAL Rewind Express

Betfred Double Delight Bitches Final Express Wins The Day

Greenwell Lark was sent off the 5/4F after beating Rewind Express on the last two occasions by head and 1/2L but those performance saw Express blaze a trail and but for slow tracks -40 and -90 it could have been a different story. I was strong on Rewind Express in The Sport Newspaper and was duly rewarded with a nice 9/2 winner returned 7/2. Matt Dartnell’s bitch possesses that magical ingredient serious early pace and going forward this could be a very exciting year. She led at the first-bend and showed terrific pace to open up an impressive lead, they would not catch her tonight on a track only rated -10. The winning time of 29.52 may not set tongues wagging but the manner of her performance definitely should.

Betfred Hat Trick Heaven Bitches Final - £2,000 Wright’s Got A Real Gem

Cast your mind back to December’s Oaks and although Droopys Danneel was a worthy winner the hard luck story of the race was Jimmy Wright’s Akerview Gem. It may not have been the Oaks but connections got some consolation with her impressive victory in this final. Sent off the 3/1CF she had to ride a bump at the opening turn but showed plenty of guts to come out of it in front, Gem would not be denied and crossed the line 0.5L to the good over Caseys Wonder in 29.54 -10. The Oaks is a long way off but without question Akerview Gem is a real force to be reckoned with in all bitches stakes.

SUPPORTING CARD

With thirteen races left there was plenty of highlights; Candlelight King came out on top for Elaine Parker in 28.96 -10, the

more I see of this talented tracker the more he looks like a Derby dog, early-pace wins races and competitions this fella has it in abundance. It turned out to be a good night for the Parker’s who landed an impressive hat-trick with Burnpark Thunder (29.58 -10) and Russanda Peachy (16.25 -10). Scala Dromin showed his brilliant Prestige win was no fluke scoring impressively on his first look at the Yorkshire venue in 39.56 -20. The marathon scene is taking off we had two fantastic marathons over 934m on the card won by Burgess Borna 58.07 -40 and Fearsome Liberty 58.17 -40, I don’t know about you but I am so excited about seeing them one day go head to head, it is sure to happen one night on Sky-Sports. The first race on the card saw Golden Wonder win in 29.11 -10, he burst on to the scene but injury derailed this star, he looks back and is a must to follow this year. What a night if you want the wow factor tune into Sky Sports because every show you witness something very special.

RESULTS: PINPOINT RECRUITMENT

Pinpoint spot on for sponsoring top night W hat an exceptional night this was and none of it would have been possible without the generosity of Alan Findlay from Pinpoint Recruitment. It had a party atmosphere and was enjoyed by a very large crowd and viewers of Sky Greyhounds on Sky Sports. Not even snow and cold conditions could take the edge off a brilliant night.

PAY FREEZE IS UNSTOPPABLE

Pay Freeze is a rare talent he’s now won out of every single trap, there is just no stopping him. I must confess I thought his draw was shocking but he made a complete mockery of his so called bad draw by blasting out and putting a high class field to the sword in the manner of a real champion to take the Pinpoint Recruitment Standard Final worth £3,000. The 6/4 JF made all to score by 1L over Spirit Sir Henry 20/1 in 28.84. People will look at that winning distance but I would say it was a mighty run from the runner-up who is a very good greyhound in his own right. Connections of Pay Freeze will be dreaming of Derby Glory, the sponsors William Hill have him installed at 33/1, could the Derby trophy and whopping cheque be heading to Yorkshire? Mileheight Alba the other 6/4 JF will have better nights, the Laurels champion will be back I am sure and is also worth following this year.

I’M NUTS ABOUT NUTTER

Craig Dawson is in the enviable position of having a top quality kennel strength which includes the amazing talent of Farloe Nutter. He took the Pinpoint Puppy Training Standard final worth £2,000 by storm. Recording a 4.66 sectional the 5/4 favourite blew not only the opposition away but also the racing media, he showed incredible pace to win by 4.25L in the fastest

time of the night 28.61. He does not turn two until April but already this greyhound seems to have huge following, the greyhound fraternity have a new star to cheer and on the evidence so far they will be very loud cheers in coming weeks and months.

SOPPITT TOASTS A NEW STAR

Ted Soppitt is no stranger to top-class greyhounds; he looks to have a staying sensation in the form of Killieford Toast who won The Pinpoint Industrial 640m worth ÂŁ2,000. Lagganmore Milan was sent off the 4/5 favourite after an impressive display in the heats, he did not break to his optimum but showed great pace to get to the front but Killieford Toast 11/4 was on the premises and put in a very strong finishing kick that would see him victorious by 2L in 39.19. It will be interesting to follow both of

these dogs, Killieford Toast could be the next big thing on the marathon scene but looks likely to make the long journey from the North-East to Hove for the Coral Regency before stepping up.

DIVA IS LEADING LADY

We must congratulate the winner Acapulco Diva 33/1 who was a deserved winner by 0.5L in 17.48 of the Pinpoint Healthcare Sprint Final worth ÂŁ1,500. However I must write that I witnessed one of the best sprint performances I am likely to see this year from the runner-up Ballymac Best, to receive the trouble he did and come back says so much about this star of the sprinting ranks. The night belonged to Acapulco Diva but on this performance it is safe to say Ballymac Best will have some huge nights in 2014.

INTERVIEW: MARGARET BOLTON

Bolton hits 1,000 in style T

ommy Bolton is without doubt right up there in terms of quality Irish trainers, the team have just hit the incredible landmark of 1,000 winners so I thought it was a great idea to catch up with Margaret Bolton, Tommy’s 18-year-old daughter who shares his passion for the greyhounds and is someone I am definitely tipping for success. It is fantastic to have young talented people coming through into the sport! NAME: Margaret Bolton AGE: 18 POSITION: Assistant trainer to my father (Tommy Bolton) BEST DOG YOU’VE TRAINED: That’s a tough one I’d have to say Head For Fame, although all of our dogs try their best. I think my father would say head for fame is the best but he trained a lot of good dogs like Early Potter a good while ago and others like Ballymac Barrell, exotic diamond, Knocknalyre Jack and Ballymac Brien WHICH GREYHOUND CURRENTLY RACING WOULD YOU LIKE IN THE KENNEL: There are lots of fast dogs out there, we’re happy with our own though. FAVOURITE TRACK AND WHY: I like every track but it would have to be Mullingar because it holds so many happy memories, like growing up my father would be there all the time, he’s won the Mullingar top trainer title a few times. One of the best nights racing was when my dog Exotic Diamond won the Fair Warrior Sprint there. BEST THING ABOUT WORKING IN THE GREYHOUND INDUSTRY: It would have to be seeing the owners faces when their dogs win, it’s great that all your hard work pays off and when you see them smiling it gives you an amazing feeling. IT’S BEEN SOME JOURNEY APPROACHING THE BRILLIANT ACHIEVEMENT OF HITTING THE KENNELS 1,000TH WINNER WHAT KEEP YOU ALL MOTIVATED: We are a very close family we just want to bring joy to each other, the greyhounds is great and they take you to places and meet people you normally would not, you never know what is around the corner that excitement keeps

Margaret Bolton and Exotic Diamond

you motivated. For me personally I love learning and being hungry to learn more, I really enjoy working with the dogs so there are many things that keeps us all going. WILL WE SEE YOU AT WIMBLEDON FOR £200,000 WILLIAM HILL DERBY, IF WE WILL WHO SHOULD WE WATCH OUT FOR: You never know, that is a lot of money, maybe we will be heading to London for a crack at the big race, maybe not! WHAT DO YOU FEED: We feed a mixture of nuts, meat and veggies for their dinner and for their breakfast its cereal, fruit and yogurt. DO YOU USE ANY VITAMINS: We may use a vitamin once in a while but we try to give them everything naturally through their diet. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE

SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INVOLVED IN THE INDUSTRY: The advice I would give someone getting into this industry is learn patience, you can’t rush a dog, a racing greyhound is an athlete so respect them, and don’t be afraid to learn. WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO IN THE KENNEL, DO YOU AND YOUR DAD ARGUE OVER THIS: I listen to rock music and my father likes country, but its 50/50 as to who gets their way! TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DAD NOBODY KNOWS: My father was a great footballer at my age, I’ve seen videos my mother Sheila had kept, he was great in goals. What do you like to do away from dogs to relax: I just go into town to my friends for an hour or two or just watch a movie at home!

RESULTS: LADBROKES GOLDEN JACKET

Honey takes richest staying race in UK FIRST-ROUND SAT 8TH FEBRUARY

The scene was set for what is a truly amazing competition, the first category-one race of the year started with a bang. Ladbrokes and Crayford deserve huge credit for delivering greyhound fans something really special, they even had the brilliant first-prize of £17,500 in a case next to the impressive roll of honour just to add build up and anticipation even further. The voodoo of the ante-post favourite continued in dramatic style when Fear Emoski crashed out, the talented Lister OBE runner was not alone in having their dreams of landing the biggest staying prize available; Fearsome Liberty, Avit On Bertha, Tooreen Hawk, Em Millie, Laughing Sam, King Kane and Millwards Mink where all fancied to go well in the ante-post betting market but sadly their dreams ended for another year for Jacket glory. HEAT WINNERS: Airforce General 46.80 -70, Boltatwelldigger 46.30 -70, Lenson Pele 47.39 -90, Curraleigh Rock 46.52 -90, Midway Nick 47.10 -90, Hometown Honey 46.50 -90. All the heat winners where impressive and deserved to book their place into the semi-finals. Of the other qualifiers you could not help but be impressed by the Irish raider Shanless Becky, who was beaten just over 5L by Hometown Honey but looked out and in big trouble after being put out of the race at the first-bend, to even qualify from that position was remarkable let alone run the brilliant Honey so close. The local hope Pony Bride was also impressive she had to ride the bumps but stuck to the task well to qualify being beaten fewer than 3L by Airforce General. Hometown Honey was immediately installed the new 6/4 favourite by the sponsors and you could not argue on tonight’s evidence. Shanless Becky 6/1, Lenson Pele 8/1,

A nice few quid

CRAYFORD Musical Fawn∑

RESULTS: LADBROKES GOLDEN JACKET Hometown Honey does the business

Sidarian Jaguar 10/1, King Danni 12/1, 16/1 bar Heat winners Airforce General 33/1, Boltatwelldigger 16/1, Curraleigh Rock 33/1 and Midway Nick 16/1 will be hoping to reproduce their brilliant efforts in the opening round when they come out for the semi-finals next Saturday.

SEMI-FINAL: SAT 15TH FEBRUARY

The draw was made and being the firsttwo in each semi-final that would progress into next week’s final there was no room for error.

FIRST SEMI-FINAL: Shanless Becky caught the eye and imagination in the heats and was duly sent off the 11/10 favourite in the first semi-final. Lenson Pele 9/2 though is a greyhound that is dangerous because he possesses fantastic early pace, he trapped out best of all, rode a bump at the corner but hit the front and threw down the gauntlet to the rest, catch me if you can. They could not catch him, the favourite was in all kind of trouble again and once more made eye catching ground up in the closing stages but there was still a gap of 1.5L at the line in 46.84 -70.

SECOND SEMI-FINAL: Hometown Honey received rave reviews after her impressive first-round display, she did little to dampen the spirits of those who got on her at 6/1 ante-post with a mighty impressive display here. Sent off a 1/2 chance but in a matter of strides those odds looked very generous, she trapped well and soon hit the front, there was never an anxious moment and Honey crossed the line with 4L in hand over Midway Nick 7/1 in the fastest of the semi-finals 45.97 -70. THIRD SEMI-FINAL: Sidarian Jaguar was sent off the 6/4 favourite and I am sure

CRAYFORD

Ricky Holloway and his supporters will be delighted with the performance that unfolded. Early-pace is a key ingredient to success irrespective of distance, your always better being out in front and that is exactly what Ricky Holloway’s charge did, leading on the run up he missed the trouble and ran out a very comfortable 6.5L winner over Boltatwelldigger 5/2 in 46.15 -70. Next stop the final of the richest staying race in the UK, we have a fantastic final with six quality trackers the final and supporting action promises to be spectacular.

FINAL SATURDAY 22ND FEBRUARY

What a competition Crayford have put on it culminated in a sensational final that gripped greyhound fans’ imagination. I could not make it to the track, I watched it in a Ladbrokes shop and what I saw filled me with huge optimism about the future. The shop was packed and everyone was talking about greyhound racing – that just shows what our wonderful sport is capable of! Hometown Honey was sent off the 4/6 favourite, when she trapped brilliantly the

writing looked on the wall but then I quickly noticed Irish raider Shanless Becky had turned in second, we all know how powerful she is at the finish (One shop punter with an Irish accent shouted c’mon Becky you’ve won it from here) anyone who had taken the 3/1 must have been filled with hope. Hometown Honey though is tough, resilient and a born winner, Becky was digging into her lead all the way around, the Irish raider served up one last huge effort on the run in but Honey and champion trainer Mark Wallis would not be denied, they had a head to spare at the line in 45.45 + 30 with a further 2.75L back to Midway Nick 5/1 in third. Must mention the brilliant Lenson Pele who unfortunately had to be withdrawn on the morning of the race, my thoughts with connections and I hope to see him back before too long. What a start to the year Mark Wallis is having, another big race winner and the kennel are in huge form. That was further franked on the day when the Champ landed a one-two in the Peter Bussey Memorial; Aayamzamodel 2/1 took the race over her kennel mate and last year’s champion Bridge Bandit 4/5F by 3L in 33.65 +20 to bag the £2,000 first-prize. The Chief Ramsbottom Hurdle £500 was won by Westmead Charlot 25/1 by a short-head in 34.89 +20, Tony Taylor’s bitch showed real guts to come back from a bump at the fifth-bend to get up close home to the delight of her connections. Apart from the final of the Jacket I was so looking forward to seeing the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket Maxi Marathon over 1,048M and worth incredibly £1 a metre. Musical Fawn 9/4 won the race with unreal finishing power for Seamus Cahill to score by 10.25L and set a new track-record of 68.80 +50. Em Millie 4/6F unfortunately picked up and injury and we wish connections all the very best for the future. Musical Fawn is another to add to the ever growing Marathon stars cuurently on the circuit, I can’t remember so many talented performers for the extreme distances, it is a hot category and one that promises to give greyhound fans a lot of excitement this year.

BREEDING GROUND Breeding Update Well, a little bit of sunshine and slightly warmer weather... and what happens ? The bitches start to break in season ! I shouldn't really be surprised as the older retired girls had all been in season, just the broods we were waiting on that hadn't. It all started with 'Nina' (Soviet Fantasy) so she was sent away and was mated to Shaneboy Spencer, a dog I like who had won 4 competitions (2 in Ireland + 2 in the UK). He is new to the stud game and Nina was only his second mating so it is an unknown as to how he will produce as a sire. A month later and 'Lulu' (Hesley Hawaii) broke and so she has been sent to be mated by double Derby winner and top stud dog Westmead Hawk. Finally 'Marlene' (Dunham Collier)...who wasn't even in our kennel at the time broke a week later, so she has been sent to be mated by top early pace sire Premier Fantasy. Soviet fantasy has already had a 1 pup litter. Fortunately he is being reared with 2 other pups as part of a pack. Let's hope we get more than 1 pup this time.

Hesley Hawaii has also had a litter before, she had 5 pups to Droopys Scolari who look promising and are just starting to qualify for racing. It seems a long time since they were 2 weeks old.

As for Dunham Collier, she is a first time 'maiden bitch', so let's hope that she takes to motherhood as well as her mother and grandmother who both had litters for us here.

The way forward ? Hesley Hawaii is our own bitch.... but Soviet Fantasy and Dunham Collier both belong to other people, we are 'doing a deal' where we will share the pups (split the litter) at earmarking depending upon how many pups there are. In the current climate, having 3 full litters at once would not be for me... but litter splitting/sharing means that I will not have 3 full litters... just 1 full litter and 2 part litters. It means that the girls can be bred from without any 1 party/individual taking all of the risk. It certainly suits my way of thinking

It was a 2nd competition win for her having dead-heated in the William Hill Grand Prix at Sunderland. A versatile performer, her open wins range from 575m at Romford up to 843m at Yarmouth. Her best times include 39.70(Sunderland 640m), 35.15(Romford 575m), 41.74 (Brighton 695m) and 41.95 (Coventry 672m), her best Crayford effort being a 45.27(calc) in the jacket semis. Malbay Circuit A good win for Scala Dromin at trainer Stuart Buckland's home track. The step up to 6 bends has brought about a marked improvement and his race record stands at 6 wins from 31 starts (UK 3 wins from 10 starts). He seems sure to play a part in the major staying races this year. Sire Shaneboy Lee is becoming a popular stud dog, his race record is an impressive 25 wins from 39 starts. He won the Group 1 Hegarty bookmakers 600yds stake(2010) at shelbourne park, as well as finishing runner up in the 2009 Champion stakes(shelbourne park), runner up in the 2009 Irish St leger(Limerick). He was also a finalist in the 2010 Easter cup(Sh.Pk), a finalist in the 2009 Irish Derby(Sh Pk), and a finalist in the 2009 produce stakes at Clonmel, a track where he set a new track record of 28.24 in the 2nd round. Other times recorded include 28.52 at Limerick, 29.57(550) Sh.Pk, and 32.50(600) also at Sh.Pk. Dam Keoghs Lass won 2 of her 20 races. Some of her best times include 29.15 Cork, 29.33 Youghal, 30.25(550) Cork, and 40.29(700) at Youghal. Brett Lee was a phenomenal race dog with a record of 25 wins from just 32 starts, he won multiple Group races as well as setting track records. Shaneboy Ruth is the dam of Shaneboy Dorie, who in turn is the dam of Shaneboy Alley, and Shaneboy Maria the dam of Shaneboy Spencer. She won 5 out of 15 winning over 575yds at Clonmel and over 525, 550, and 700 yards at Limerick. Fortune Mike won the 2002 Irish puppy derby at Harolds Cross as well as the 2002 Lee Strand Charity 550 at Tralee. Some of his best times are 28.40 Harolds Cross, 28.66 Limerick, and 30.02(550) at Tralee. Malbay Rapid was unraced with a 30.27 trial at Limerick on her card.

IAN BLAND: OUR INSIDE MAN AT CRAYFORD

Golden moment for Crayford T here is simply nothing quite like the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket the 2014 final of which was run here on Saturday 22 February. What makes this race unique is that it is the only major final to be run on a morning card and it is always pleasing to hear from dog owners, trainers and the public alike just what a great morning this always is. It has a very special atmosphere and with both the semis and final being in the morning the shop punters are able to watch where their money is going. The illustrious list of previous winners include the likes of El Onda, Bobs Regan, Greenacre Lin, Blue Bee and Lorrys Options amongst others. Sponsors Ladbrokes added a further £2,500 to the first prize this year taking the winners money up to £17,500 which as you would expect attracted an excellent entry list. Unfortunately the now well established statistic which reads “anti post favourites do not win the jacket” proved once again to be relevant with the shock elimination of Fear Emoski in the first round heats when Charlie Lister’s star could only manage fourth place in her race. Crayford’s sole representative Pony Bride failed to get into the last six reminding us of just how difficult it is to land a “home win”. With just four Crayford trained dogs winning in the last thirty nine events that fact alone is testament to the quality of greyhound which arrive from far and wide to compete. Shanless Becky was sent over from Ireland to take her chance and was accompanied by trainer Brendan Cullen and as expected she managed to make the final without having any sort of luck in running in either her heat or semi races. As is usual the event always produces some surprise performances and Boltatwelldigger who won his heat at odds of 16-1 also secured his place in the final line up. The other finalists were Hometown Honey, Midway Nick and Sidarian Jaguar making up a five dog race after the unfortunate late withdrawl of Lenson Pele. My tip prior to the start of this event was Hometown Honey trained by Mark Wallis and you could have had anti post odds

of 14-1 about her chances. In an exciting final she went off as the 4-5 odds on favourite running from her favourite trap six and after a smart exit from the traps she took up the lead at the first bend followed by Shanless Becky and the pair produced a quality race over the 714 metres with Honey just managing to hold off the late challenge of Becky to win by the distance of just a neck. Hometown Honey had also won her heat and semi final races and she would have been a popular winner on the day. Having tipped her here for you in last month’s edition I hope that some of you will have benefited from that very generous anti post price. On an excellent card we also had the annual running of The Peter Bussey Memorial Trophy over 540 metres and to round of a perfect day for the Mark Wallace kennel his Aayamzamodel romped home by three lengths at odds of 2-1. I had the pleasure of knowing Peter for a number of years and

he was a well known figure within the sport and as our head groundsman for many years here I am sure he would have been pleased with the way the track ran on this big day. For the first time in twelve years we also ran an Open race over 1048 metres namely the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket Maxi Marathon which was duly won by Musical Fawn in a new track record time of 68.80seconds. Trained by Seamus Cahill she was returned at 9-4 smashing the previous time of 69.51 seconds. She won £1,048 for her connections and I am sure that we will see her back here in the future over extended distances. The long standing Chief Ramsbottom Hurdle went surprise victor Westmead Charlot who was returned at odds of 25-1 beating Grand National winner Mash Mad Snowy and Lollylips trained here by Julie Luckhust. Races such as these make Golden Jacket day and personally I am already looking forward to next year’s race.

MARK PIERREPONT

2014 ALREADY OFF T

his year has overall got off to a much brighter start than 2013 did. In fact we’ve got quite a few nice pups in the kennel now, they promise to be really nice types to follow over the coming months. One dog pup that looks like he could be really special is Salacres Roberto (Crash x Liscahane Frisky , Sept ‘12). I and Peter Harnden purchased Roberto as a 12 week old pup from Declan Silles over at Liscahane kennels in Ireland. He’s a half-brother to Salacres Sparky who won open races for us over 4 , 6 and even 8 bends. He won his share Sparky did and although he was never prolific , he certainly knew when the right time to win was. He was the fourth leg of an open race four timer for us down at Henlow one night and having not won for 6 months , the pressure really was on Sparky to come up with the goods. At halfway of his 692m open things were not looking good as he was the best part of 12 lengths off the pace. Thankfully he turned on the turbo and got up on the run in to complete a 4 timer for the kennel on a night that will be hard to ever repeat. Sparky also won 905m marathon races for us on Select Stakes night and Eclipse final night later that year , giving us the kind of nights that we’re all involved in the game for. Anyway enough reminiscing and back to his younger brother Roberto. His schooling had gone well in Ireland with some promising trials and his first trial at Nottingham couldn’t really have gone much better as he recorded a time of 1827 for the 305m. I’m not quite convinced the time is quite right for this trial , one or two local clock watchers had it a little slower than this , however the fact remains that he is a pup with potential and not being overly big it shouldn’t be too long before he’s on the track competing. Remember the name and keep him on-

side. Moving over to the fairer sex there is a bitch that has really taken our eye in a big way , her name is Salacreswhitesox (Ten Large Down x Silkys Court , June ‘12) and i’ve alot of faith that this bitch is destined for big things. To date she’s only had a couple of sprint trials but make no mistake she’s no sprinter and looks a really nice type

for readers to follow over the spring and summer months. Whitesox is sired by Diane Henrys up and coming sire Ten Large Down and if she is a sign of the type of pup that he is to produce, Ten Large Down will soon be making a big name for himself. We’re starting to see some of the leading open race dogs coming out now after

F TO FLYING START

their winter breaks. It’s a young pup however that has really caught my attention in his first 2 UK races and having supported him in the ring on both occasions he’s a pup that’s firmly in my good books. Keith Allsop is an owner / trainer who puts alot of time and money into the sport and it’s nice to see him with a re-

ally nice pup on his hands in the shape of Slick Sacramento. His form in Ireland looked decent, if not spectacular , having landed 1 race from 6 starts around Limerick and in the main Tralee. It was in his last start at Tralee where things looked to have clicked as he came from the back of the pack to score his

first victory in a time of 2909. This is a pup with brute early pace though and that will be how he is to win open races here in the UK. He really put his rivals to the sword on his Nottingham debut when winning in a time of 2849 (+30) but it was his win in the following weeks final that really marked him out as a pup with a bright future. He looked to have his race secured until easing badly at the sough and this could have spelt the end for a lesser dog. He quickly regained his stride though and in the end ran out a comfortable 2 3/4 length winner in a time of 2905 (+10). As this run showed he’s still learning the game and there are sure to be defeats along the way but keep him in your notebooks as he’ll be running more good races than bad ones. It was extremely sad news to hear about Coventry closing. Coventry is a wonderful galloping track and is a big big loss to the sport. So I was delighted to hear this decision was being reversed, sadness to delight in a little more than twenty-four hours, let’s hope Coventry flourishes and thank goodness it will not close. On another positive note it was great to see so many people turn up for the Show Of Passion down in London. It would be a sad day if it ever came to losing Wimbledon , hopefully it’s not too late and the rallying calls of the masses have been noted. I really believe that if we are successful in keeping Wimbledon open then it will act as a major catalyst in the revitalisation of the sport. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we don’t lose the track. Thanks all for reading and don’t forget you can follow my thoughts throughout the month on Twitter @mark2013_efc and you can also follow the thoughts of Peter @SALACRES. DILLYMORE DELIGHT

Mullins setting the highest standards for Dillymore kennel J

ohn Mullins trains out of his Dillymore Kennels in Capel St Mary on the Essex\Suffolk border. He took over from his mother Linda Mullins in 2001 upon her retirement. Dillymore should not be mistaken for simply being a greyhound training facility. Debbie and John breed and rear pups and have also joined forces with Greyhound Homer RGT Suffolk to provide kennel blocks for retired greyhounds awaiting rehoming. Going back 6 years John Mullins was a given top 6 Trainers Championship contender with superstars such as Blonde Jeannie winning the Yorkshire, Midland and Wimbledon Oaks in 2007, Blonde Dino winning 2007 Monmore Puppy Derby, 2008 Sheffield Steel City Cup, 2008 Dundalk International and reaching the 2008 English Greyhound Derby Final and Knockies Hannah winning the 2011 TV Trophy with his home bred and reared bitch. John has been quite in recent times, but he has set himself high standards for 2014. “The owners in the kennel have acquired some very nice greyhound towards the end of 2013 and we expect Dillymore to achieve 2 targets this year; 1) to win a minimum of a Category 1 event and 2) to finish in the top 6 of the Trainers Championship.” 2014 could not have started off better for John Mullins. Currently sitting 6th place in the Trainers Championship John adds “All the greyhounds are running very well for their owners and accumulating good points. “That said, we still have some of the big guns to come out to play later in the year. Swift Keith will be our main target for my ultimate dream of winning all 3 Greyhound Derbies in the same year.” Swift Keith has been very impressive in

his comeback trials since the turn of the year clocking 16.04 at Wimbledon, followed by 15.85 and 29.16 at Coventry. Boasting at 30% win ratio so far in 2014 in open races, this impressive win rate has been down to hard work by the kennel staff at Dillymore: “It is a team effort with Jeff, Nigel and Debbie all to be thanked for their continued hard work along with the great co-operation we receive from all of our owners”. Among the new acquisitions for the kennel is Burgess Borna. She arrived into the kennel in October 2013 and went straight into season. She impressed in her trials, coming a short head to Tyrur Willyjoe running on very strongly to the pickup. The owners had high hopes for “Jenny” (kennel name) after purchasing her on the back of her 750 yards novice stake runs in Ireland behind the impressive Groupie Doll. Jenny won A3 grade over 462m at Yarmouth first time out very impressively. She since won over 6-bends at Coventry and was decided to step her up to 8-bends so was tried over 750m at Romford where she won well first time out. Burgess Borna has subsequently won 3 from 3 in over 892m, 934m and 872m at Hall Green, Sheffield and Crayford respectively. John has high hopes for her believing she could be a TV trophy candidate for later in the year. 2014 saw the arrival of Sundance Storm and Sundance Spartan for the Barker Family Racing. Both have settled in very well, although neither have yet to win we are very hopeful of good things for the rest of the year. Swift Suarez, an August 2012 puppy, hit the ground running with a very eye catching 24.13 win first time out at Romford.

This was followed up with a 2nd at Hall Green and a good 3rd at Sheffield just losing out in a close finish with Supreme Turbo and Droopys Jarrow. “I have spoken with the owners and we believe the Monmore Puppy Derby will be the plan for Suarez in March and he will trial round the track shortly in preparation,” says John. Glanmire Jet has been schooled over hurdles for the past 8 weeks and John was pleased to see Jet dead-heat in his trial stakes race at Wimbledon. John comments “Jet has taken to hurdles very well and we will look to switch him between hurdles and flat races after the Springbok competition.” On the graded front, a greyhound to watch out for is Yanchep Park. This June 2012 pup has rapidly gone up the grading ladder from A6 to A3 at Yarmouth. “He would not come out of the traps when we were trailing him in. From 6.20 sectionals he is now flying from the boxes and if he leads is very hard to pass,” John states. Yanchep and kennel mate Longley Park are half brother and sister to Mountjoy Rebel from the same dam Moneygall Larky. The kennel is expecting him to progress to the top of the graded ladder soon. Dillymore expect to have entries in all major competitions in 2014 across the UK. With the arrival of some more pups on the horizon shortly John is looking forward to being back where he belongs within the top 6 trainers in the country and winning Category 1 events. BY LEE CALCUTT Burgess Borna

Burgess Borna

(bk B Head Bound-Borna Talent Feb 12) Trainer: John Mullins Owners: Howard Berlin, Lee Calcutt, Keith Parkin, Chris Waters It was 2 days after my 31st birthday I received an e-mail from my Irish greyhound scout telling me about a bitch he had seen run at Newbridge who he believes is the ‘most promising bitch he has seen in a while over the extreme distances’. The bitch was called Burgess Borna, a February 2012, 19 months old pup bred out of Head Bound\Borna Talent. The run in the Newbridge Track Supports 750 yards Novice final saw her come from a long way back to only lose 2 lengths to a greyhound called Groupie Doll. This greyhound itself has gone on to be one of the top 6-bend performers in Ireland clocking 41.61 at Shelbourne. After watching the race back on the IGB. ie website a number of times I knew Burgess Borna was the staying bitch I had been after. I instantly called three other owners within the Dillymore kennel to see if they were interested and a deal was

struck with her current trainer. Kennel named Jenny, she immediately settled in to life a Dillymore and was in season upon arrival. She was laid off until the start of November when she had 4 qualifying trials at Yarmouth clocking a best time of 28.76 for the 462m trip running on to lose only a neck to kennelmate Tyrur Willyjoe, going away to the pickup. Given she was recently out of season Jenny was entered for an A3 race at Yarmouth, no expectation on her shoulders to win first time out, she went round handy off the second bend and won a convincing 3 lengths. Next stop was Hove for a maiden 695m where Jenny was beaten fair and square by a good local bitch Musical Fawn trained by Seamus Cahill. We knew Jenny would not yet hit top form over 6-bends for a few races until she was fully fit. She needed races under her belt; also realising she was still only 20 months old. She was entered for open race at Coventry and beaten by local dog Droopys Perugi near the line. The following week we went back to Coventry for a 672m maiden race where Jenny obliged at 6/4F. With the New Year upon us John decid-

ed to step her up gradually in distance so tried for a 750m maiden race at Romford. Coming from off the pace Jenny won by 3 lengths in a good time of 47.43. The following week she returned for a 750m SKY race and running on for a gallant 3rd place after getting no run during the race being bumped and hampered when making up ground. By this time connections where starting to see the promise in Burgess Borna, but John resisted the urge to step her up to the gruelling stiff 8-bend races at this stage in her early career. Jenny was entered for the Prestige heats at Hall Green over 645m, drawn out wide in trap 6 she never got a run in the race early on but was very eye-catching in defeat running on for 4th place, losing more than 6 lengths, but was in front at the pickup. With a marathon race on the SKY Hall Green Prestige finals night it was decided to step Jenny up in distance. The race was full of class with top 2013 marathon bitch Aayamzabella and recent J.B Riney MBE Boxing Day Marathon Em Millie in the field ahead of Jenny in the betting. After being bumped 3 times out of the boxes the

race looked over but she showed tremendous staying powers to get up on the line to win a head from Supreme Rossie. Six days later Jenny was entered for a 934m race at Sheffield. Jenny led off the 3rd bend and for the first time in her career she was in front in a race for a long time and landed the odds of 4/9F. John believes there are exciting times ahead for Burgess Borna. This coming from the trainer of previous staying stars Maxie Rumble, Knockies Hannah and Ballymac Swift. Given she has now just turned 2 years old (at February 2014) we are hopeful she can elevate herself to the top of the marathon scene for some time to come.

Jackpots to Ownership, by Lee Calcutt

H

aving been a regular to the old Reading ‘Smallmead’ Stadium every Monday evening cheering on my beloved Reading Racers Speedway team since the early 1990s with my Father, one day I was intrigued by asking my Father what was the sand track around the outside of the speedway track was used for? One Bank Holiday Monday in 1994 my parents took me greyhound racing to Reading. From the very first race I got the buzz, am indescribable feeling, an addiction I suppose it could be called. From this moment on and given I was only 12 years old at the time I knew greyhound racing was the sport I had fallen in love with. From then on I wanted to go every meeting, Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Over the years I had built up a fantastic knowledge for the greyhounds at Reading, following all the form, checking out the re-

sults if I happened to miss a meeting and following the Reading runners when on the road open racing. I had people asking me what I thought about certain greyhound chances in their respective races, I felt good and people appreciated my opinion. Reading had been a benchmark for some of the top trainers in the UK and Ireland including Paul Young, Terry Dartnall, Dean Childs, Paul Donovan, John McGee, to name but a few. By 2007 I’m becoming more confident in my own betting beliefs and starting to venture into the track jackpots. Shortly after starting to play jackpots for low stakes usually £16-£32 to cover few combinations, I won my first jackpot at Sheffield, £8K albeit shared between 6 winning tickets. This set me up to have a crack at the Reading jackpot. The card for 15th November 2007 was swiftly printed off and studied hard and stake played online to the sum of £16. The night

BY LEE CALCUTT was going very well, just seen the great Ballymac Under (trained by Matt Dartnall) scorch round the 465m trip in 28.30 for this 18 month old pup who would go on to be a superstar in the making. The jackpot legs had started over 10,000 tickets in the jackpot for the night bumping up the jackpot prize to over £60K before tote deductions. Hedsor Larry (trained by Keith Howard) obliged in the opening leg at 5/1 leading off the first bend. Boogie Warrior (trained by the late Edward Crow) won a well graded D1 sprint race flashing from the boxes to make all at 6/1. By this time a large proportion of the tickets had been knocked out. Swift Dougal for Paul Foster won the 465m open race getting up by a head on the line. One of my favourite stayers in racing at the time Princessmonalulu for Brian Clemenson won well in the 4th leg. The likeably named local dog Illwalktheline for Dean Childs won the 5th leg leading all the way. The nerves were now setting in, I had made the 6th leg, there were 11 tickets across the 6 runners. I was on traps 3 and 4. The hare was in motion, everybody wishing me the best of luck, the traps opened and to my eyes traps 3 & 4 trapped like Exocet missiles, I had first and second both in the lead. The longest 29 seconds of my life, on the line Kegans Mary (trained by Liz Redpath) got up on the line from Blue Dot (trained by Andrea Brown). I was elated; I had shared the jackpot with another Reading trainer, the one and only Mr Terry Dartnall, what an amazing feeling. The drinks were on me! Greyhound racing is a sport you need a bit of luck in whether being an owner, a trainer or a betting punter. It was Monday 1st March 2010; I’d played the Swindon Jackpot for a bit of fun, the jackpot was standing at around the £25K (before deductions). I had got all the way to the final leg and unfortunately my final two selections traps 5 and 6 came nowhere. Disappointment loomed. The next day I receive a telephone call to my mobile just before leaving work. It was a customer services agent from 24dogs.com apologising for not settling my bet correctly and telling me I was the sole winner of the pool. I was not aware that trap 5 of my selection had been withdrawn and reserve was running in trap 1. Rules of the jackpot were that in the event of a reserve running all tickets on the non runner placed earlier in the day reverts to the favourite nearest trap 1. To my luck and amazement trap 1 had won and was the Tote and bookmakers favourite.

I’d now found my niche, following the jackpots as they built up online. To-date I have won 10 jackpots all-round the country but over the last few years I have not engaged in these as the pools do not build up to a substantial value anymore and a lot of tracks suspend the jackpot pools on their open race meetings. 20th October 2008 was sad day when the Liz Redpath trained Aghaburren Kiowa crossed the line for the final race at Smallmead and the doors closed for the final time on Reading Stadium. With Reading closed, going to alternative tracks near to me such as Oxford and Swindon just didn’t feel the same. I believe I only went greyhound racing ten times in the next 14 months. October 2009, I saw an advert for a share in a greyhound called Clash Hummer, to be trained by Dave Smith (previous owner of the Greyhound Scene Forum). I had a purpose to go greyhound racing now, to watch a greyhound I now part-own with 6 other people from all round the country. Hummer had 7 runs, 2 wins, clocking decent 27.77 at Henlow. Unfortunately in August 2010 he broke his hock in an open race at Hove. We were all devastated. Was the longest 2 hour drive home ever, don’t think more than 2 words were spoken in the car such was the sombre mood. Hummer was patched up and re-homed successfully. The ownership bug had now developed in me and I had that urge to get back into ownership again. The Champagne Club ‘Bubbly’ Syndicate provided me the platform to enjoy owning fantastic greyhounds for a one off cost. While talking to well established people within the Paul Young setup I was offered a share in a young pup called Droopys Sid. The pup has flow round Doncaster in 29.52. Acquired by the Young At Heart Syndicate and re-named Young Sid, he went on to win the Blue Riband at Hall Green in 2012 in what was fantastic night for the syndicate. Sid went on to win Racing Post Greyhound of the Month, which I was honoured to do SKY interview and Paul Young allowed me to keep the trophy. Sid then reach the quarter-finals of the William Hill Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon. He was ultimately retired after suffering injury in the Race of Champions at Tralee. While being part of syndication was great I was wanting to have runners in my name on the card. Farley Totti came up for sale

from the Barry Draper kennel. Totti gave my co-owner Howard and I so much fun. He may have only won 3 times in 30 outings for us but he finished in the first 3 on 50% of his races. Best remembered race for Totti was beating dual Select Stakes winner Jordansoilutions at Nottingham by 4 ¼L. Was a fantastic feeling to think we owned a dog of this quality. Old age eventually caught up with Totti and he was retired at the age of 4yo. I now have all but one of my dogs with John Mullins at Dillymore Kennels (nr Ipswich). While I am only able to get to his kennels a couple of times a year I know they are in the best possible hands and John is prepared to travel. The first greyhound I had with Dillymore was Tyrur Willyjoe. He had made the final of the 2012 Easter Cup in Ireland. Willyjoe a lovely looking fawn greyhound, he did us proud and won numerous races between 480m-575m. Currently I part-own Burgess Borna with 3 wonderful people at Dillymore. She looks like she could be a serious marathon performer given she has only just turned 2yo in February 2014. Tyrur Andy has won 70% of his A1 races at Yarmouth and has won numerous open races throughout the country including a heat of the 2013 Swindon Arc beating Farloe Warhawk in 28.40. Glanmire Jet has made the 2013 All England Cup Final and now is being tried over hurdles for the 2014 William Hill Springbok competition and recently dead-heated in a trial stake race. Recent acquisition Swift Suarez has started his career of very well. Winning first time out at Romford leading from the front in 24.13, some of the 16/1 available early in the day was quickly snapped up. His next 2 races were very close defeats at Hall Green and Sheffield but I have high hopes for Suarez in the Monmore Puppy Cup. Hopefully he draws Trap 1 soon as has been unlucky in the draws so far in traps 3 and 4 for a dead railer. Capel Staystrong (ex Stay Strong, GBGB forced name change) is trained by the Gifkins family a mile down the road from Dillymore. Lee has high hopes for ‘Bobby’ and he believes he can turn into a good competition dog with his tremendous early pace. While I have been in the sport as an owner for a relatively short time, already experiencing the highs and very lows of the sport, I am currently enjoying life as an owner at the moment and long may it continue into 2014.

ARMCHAIR OWNERS

Syndicates going strong W

hat a great February it has been for the syndicates, Floss notches up a double at Romford and Widow runs very well in unlucky defeats at Newcastle. The new Armchair dog Wilburn has arrived over from Ireland and she’s a very happy girl, Yvonne Bell her trainer at Sunderland says she has settled in very well, Wilburn will be having her first trial by the end of February, and hopefully on the racing strength by mid-march. Shares are still available for a very affordable one off payment of £95, see website www.armchairowners.com for full details. It’s very exciting times for all syndicate members, none more so than the Callaghan family from Blantyre, Glasgow. Never owned a greyhound before they decided to take the plunge into ownership and joined the Armchair syndicates. 37-year-old Frankie Callaghan, an HGV driver, takes up the story. “I first became interested in Greyhound racing at 19 just having the odd small bet, but my real interest started when RPGTV appeared on the TV, the whole family my partner Georgie, children Kaila, Frankie and Finn cannot wait for Friday and Saturday nights to watch the show and we all pick out different dogs each race and shout them home. I was interested in buying a dog and after researching many syndicates I really liked the Armchair syndicates so I decided to buy Georgie a share in Armchair Widow as a Christmas present, she was absolutely delighted as her Grandfather used to breed greyhounds after he retired as a professional footballer. I then decided to buy a share in Floss and Wilburn, and the whole family are thrilled about watching them race. Then it took off completely being involved in the Armchair Syndicate and also after speaking to Mark who runs them and getting good advice from him, it became clear that it was more affordable than I thought so I decided to take the plunge and go 50/50 on buying Aero Jinx and Aero Special. My family and I are so excited about this new venture, something that we are all interested in and can do together. We’re looking

Frankie Callaghan and family

forward to actually meeting the dogs, seeing them do the trials, what their grades will be and the future races at Newcastle. “I would definitely recommend ownership to anyone who is interested. It’s a great experience.” Here’s wishing the Callaghan family the very best of luck with their new dogs. The open race scene is revving up nicely and we have some fantastic action too look forward to on RPGTV and Sky Dogs, And have we seen the new Tango in Killieford Toast, now re-named Calzaghe Vet, reportedly bought for a big sum after notching up a hot sequence at independent track Gretna Green. Owned by Paul Clark (the vet) and Mr Calzaghe ,Carl Roberts this Jan 2012 son of Head Bound x Quare Deal wasted no time in recouping some of the purchase price back , by landing the £2000 to the winner Pinpoint Industrial 640m at Newcastle. I was very impressed with his first round run after encountering all sorts of traffic

problems, the dog took off and for me was a very unlucky loser, so much so I made him my Nap for the final, that was until the draw came out, and he was the wrong side of fast starting wide runner Braveheart Boy. But that didn’t stop him from showing electric middle pace along with a very strong finish to win the final by an increasing two lengths. Next time out at Nottingham 680m again slow away and finding trouble in running he still managed to get his head in front and clock the second fastest time of the year for the 680m trip. This fella is certainly going places and next step is probably Sunderland for a pop at the Grand Prix. A special thanks to Alan Findlay and his Pinpoint Recruitment for putting on the fantastic festival at Newcastle, and also for not forgetting the graders a real nice touch by him, and great tv interviews as well. Be lucky everybody and all the dogs come home safely. Mark

On the re-homing front. I was appointed William Hill Re-Homing co-ordinator in April 2013 and since then I am pleased to say we have had close to 100 greyhounds re-homed from Newcastle Stadium. All of the Greyhounds are subject to a veterinary check and must be fully vaccinated and neutered/spayed prior to entering our RGT kennels. Our branch of the RGT is run by Sonia Graham who does a wonderful job finding forever homes for our greyhounds. We also receive a lot of feedback from families who have adopted a greyhound from us. I must commend our trainers and owners who are extremely supported of our branch, and the Retired Greyhound Trust as a whole. I am aware that the greyhound racing industry is often seen in a bad light, but lets highlight the positive, almost every GBGB track now has a branch of the RGT which successfully rehomes greyhounds. We are in the process of trying to educate people that greyhounds make fantastic family pets. I myself come from a greyhound background and cannot speak highly enough of the breed. #greyhoundsmakegreatpets If you have any queries regarding the re-homing or adoption process please contact myself on 0191 210 5307 or Sonia on 07967 057 759 Please check out our social pages Facebook: Scottish.BordersRgt Twitter @BordersRGT Web: borders.retiredgreyhounds.co.uk

FROM THE COURSING FIELDS OF IRELAND

Storms can’t blow the 89th National meeting at Clonmel off course I

t’s Tuesday morning in the Local Bar. The national coursing meeting concluded the previous day. The last of the battle scared punters prepare to depart to distant shores. Rupert and Richie have the bags packed. Destination – Manchester via Cork airport. The mood is sombre and then in strolls Berkie (he doesn’t have a surname) with entourage in tow. ‘Six pints of Guinness’ he calls. Berkie is in conciliatory mood. It’s been a profitable three days for the astute Kerryman. And here’s why. The 89th National coursing meeting kicked off amid gale force winds that were a prelude of worse to come. The Boylesports.com derby market was headed by Eshwary Leader. The Abbeydorney qualifier had seen an avalanche of support since Christmas. The ‘Needham’s’ – Danger & Simple – both now owned by sponsor John Boyle and well as the Dungarvan qualifier – Kingsmill Rover were next in line. SATURDAY – DAY ONE – Derby first round - second course – Corn na feile winner Needham Danger leds but succumbs to Bernish Jet at the top of the field. Roll over Magic – winner of the Mooncoin puppy stake and favourite by many cramps on the run up. Rocquefort Barney – now trained by pat Curtin since qualifying at Kilcreevin is beaten a length by Cuban Ando. All eyes now on Eshwary Leader and Go Conquer. ‘Leader’ bombs out leads by a distance switches to the white collar goes unsighted. Gasps of horror from the tense stand. The favourite is out. No 51 – Needham Simple then enters the fray against Light Duty. As Richie Quinn drops the pair ‘Simple’ quickly finds his stride. The beleaguered punters cheer from the stands but

Corriga Rebel

as ‘Simple’ appears to stumble the black Light Duty is unrelenting and squeezes a ¼ length victory in a thrilling buckle. Carnage. Several at top of betting market out. DAY 2 would wreck more havoc. Kingsmill Rover got plenty to do in his 2nd round win over Wood Dynamo and could not prevail against the Noreen McManus owned With Grim Intent in the 3rd round. Breezing Johnny (5/1) after his 1st course owned by the Lynch Syndicate and trained by Noel Lynch could hold off the challenge of Timmeys Bin in his 3rd round course. Setting the stands alight was the Vale View Flyer. The ‘Flyer’ owned by most of Kilfinane – judging by the cheering — looked in good order when prevailing against Lineroad Amigo in his morning course. He would next meet Central Investor in the 3rd

round. On the white collar the ‘ Flyer’ drew right and went unsighted . As he moved offline he brought Central Investor with him. So an undecided course and back to slips. In the re-run Central led and then went across ‘white’ leaving the ‘Flyer’ with a free run behind the hare. Tumultuous cheering from stands but the extra run would put paid to any chances of further progression. 1 – Kyle Calvin owned by the Field family from Patrickwell in Limerick was now head of the betting market . Sired by their own well bred but unfashionable Kyle Basil out of Maureen Rua the Fields had hit the crossbar in recent years with ‘King’ and ‘Leigh’. Going one better ,they hoped to emulate their derby success in the track derby with ‘Jack’ back in the ‘80’s. In the other half With Grim Intent – by Johnny Casanova out of Fleetwood Denise was the big danger. In the 1st semifinal ‘With Grim

Intent led Fingal Master in a just up decision. Leading by 2 ½ lengths but after a lot of work behind the hare in the 2nd semifinal against Light Duty Kyle Calvin’s chances appeared to have evaporated. Visibly tired leaving the field all around wondered if there would be a final. And there way – probably the most thrilling in my memory. Kyle Calvin bust from slips and made every stride a winning one. They say not to believe in fairy tales but surely this was one that came true. An outstanding winner for owners who have suffered some heart breaking moments under Slievenamon. All the talk preceding the Greyhound & Petworld oaks was of the ‘3rd quarter of death’. So-called because it brought together leading market contenders -Fota Castle Call Her Dresden –runner-up to Needham Danger in The Corn na Féile fa-

vourite Careful Betty puppy cup winner at Old Kilcullen- Bank Perspective and Skellig Blues. 2nd favourite -Turbo Julie had beaten Careful Betty en route to collecting her oaks ticket in Cappoquin . ‘Julie’ Fota Castle & ‘Betty’ qualified for round 2 but Call Her Dresden came unstuck against Roscommon qualifier Kilkeale Queen and in the buckle of the round Ballarue New held out against Bank Perspective by ½ length in a straight course. Going into day 2 Skellig Kiwi ,’Julie’ and ‘Betty’ would head the market but after round 3 the market was transformed. All three aforementioned contenders out. Of those remaining the Patrick O’Connor trained Sand Sea Model (beat Turbo Julie in 2nd course) received a grueller when beating Ballinakill Mary . She would not

run on Monday. Also still there in the Gerry Holian colours was Heart Light. She did everything right when accounting for Needham Pine by 1 ½ lengths . Rose O’Driscoll’s Skellig’s – Rose & Blues were nicely separated in opposite sides of the draw. Tynwald Jane representing owner Terry Corden and trainer Michael O’Donovan had accounted for Fota Castle in a well-earned just-up decision. Monday – day 3 – quarter-finals over and from nowhere the Jel syndicate-comprising of Eddie Quilty ,Liam Delahunty and John Flynn find themselves in the enviable position of having contenders in both semi-finals. Their aptly named ‘Somelittlething’ – a half sister to the 2013 oaks winner Smart Ali – had beaten Skellig Rose by 1 ½ lengths to set-up a clash with Heart Light. Level early Somelittlething eased out to prevail by ½ length. Upupand-

Turning Pace

Somelittlething

away also representing the Jel syndicate now faced Tynwald Jane for a place in the final. An extra run following an ‘undecided’ course against Shadow Hunter in the 1st round had taken its toll on Upupandaway and ‘Jane’ prevailed by 3 lengths . The 2014 Greyhound & Petworld oaks final saw ‘Somelittlething’ –by 2009 derby winner Kingsmill Dynamo out of Moat Belle go to slips as the 2/5 favourite against the Razor Ashmore – Jamaica Jane bred Tynwald Jane. As Martin Murphy dropped the pair the black ‘Somelittlething’ was first to lead and opened a 2 length lead. In a long slip the hare tacked to favour the white collar on the run-up . Somelittlething – running off the red collar shifted across to follow. What happened next has caused more

divided opinion since Roy Keane/World Cup/Saipan. As the hare approached the escape she moved back onto the run-up seemingly to favour Tynwald Jane who had switched sides and was now on ‘red’ . The deceptive camera angle would suggest that Tynwald Jane is ‘up’ but does not show the circuitous route the hare. Correct decision by judge Liam Kelly by pulling ‘red’ in this author’s opinion but a turn in any final is the preferred option. In the Classic Club Champion stakes Corriga Rebel owned by the MBGBW syndicate beat Mr Blonde by 2 ½ lengths in the final. This was a fitting tribute to his breeder – Mrs Scully – a lifelong followed of coursing. Berkie was also in the winners enclosure – as part owner of Grace Bruton Champion

bitch stake winner – Collect Me Now –along with Noreen McManus. Another daughter of Moat Belle out of Adios Alonso and full sister to the 2013 oaks winner Collect Me Now beat Liz’s Touch 3 lengths in the final. A welcome change the consolation stakes meant saw both run as 32’s for 1st round losers in the derby and oaks. The increased prizemoney meant much more competitive affairs . In the Horse & Jockey Kitty Butler stakes Abbeyfeale qualifier – Turning Pace held on for a just up decision against Bank Perspective whilst in the StockProof Fencing Products T.A. Morris stakes Cuine Rock – also owned in Patrickswell Limerick by the Cuine syndicate led the Lixnaw Co Kerry owned Call Him Bale by 2 lengths .

Finding homes for Retired Racers We care for approximately 80-90 greyhounds at any one time here at our kennels in Hersham and whilst they are waiting for their home our staff and volunteers prepare them for a life beyond our kennel walls by taking them out and about. We operate a no destruction policy which means that every greyhound who enters our kennels will have the opportunity to go home—no matter how long it takes. We home check all prospective homes, offer full back up and support and encourage our homed greyhounds and their families to come and visit or participate in any of our numerous events throughout the year. We provide a ‘safety-net’ for every greyhound we home and it is a requirement on our adoption agreement that our greyhounds are returned to us should peoples’ circumstances change and they find they that they can no longer keep their greyhound at home as a pet. We are an independent charity and as such we are not funded by any organisation. All we achieve we achieve through the hard work and generosity of our supporters. ANDY TOMLINSON: THE FLAPPING MAN

Feeling the chill on the Hill Wheatley Hill

Every month Andy ‘Flapping’ Tomlinson brings you the news from the Flapping Scene WHEATLEY HILL: WINTER WEATHER HITS THE HILL

February has been a terrible month for Wheatley Hill greyhound Stadium, thanks to the North East weather the Hill has had to call off two meeting meaning the Graders Sprint Championship is still ongoing. This week the final will be contested and although there’s six runners only three look to have any chance of taking the prize and the accolade of being known as the Best Sprinter at Wheatley Hill.

One owner has the pleasure of having two dogs in the final, Mr Ralph Edmundson of Middlesborough owns current favourite BLUE ONE which is undefeated in seven races. His other runner SOUL ALERT looks to be the second favorite after both won their semi-final heats in open class times. DUSTY BIN owned by Miss Kelly Hetherington of Wheatley Hill returned for this competition after three month period racing on the Scottish flaps, winning his first round heat in the quickest time of the night he didn’t trap as well as normal letting SOUL ALERT get the better of him thus finishing in second place. March will see the start of the BMW Windows 440meter Handicap Competition which is free entry for dogs qualified at the stadium with a guarantee that £500 will be paid out in total, excellent prize money for a free entry competition.

EASINGTON: MANAGER SAGA ROLLS ON

Still the saga rolls on as to how long current racing manager Joe Atkinson will be in charge at Easington Greyhound Stadium. Falling crowds and lack of entry’s have left the track struggling of late. Mr Atkinson has recently made no secret of the fact that he wants out but nobody is yet to meet his asking price of £5000 to hand over the lease. The track has a solid group of regulars like myself that never miss a meeting and we are waiting in the wings to volunteer our services to anyone that will hopefully take over if help is needed to get the track back to what she once when she was one of the best flapping tracks in the country.
