THE GREATEST RACE ON EARTH

Mick picks his top six for Derby success £200,000 TO THE WINNER: 480m WIMBLEDON First Round: Thursday 1st, Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd May (RPGTV) Second Round: Friday 9th & Saturday 10th May (RPGTV) Third Round: Saturday 17th May (SKY-SPORTS/SIS) Quarter-Finals: Tuesday 20th May (SKY-SPORTS/SIS) Semi-Finals: Saturday 24th May (SKY-SPORTS/SIS) Final: Saturday 31st May (SKY-SPORTS/SIS) SWIFT KEITH - trained by John Mullins his father Pat won the Derby in 1978 and this represents John’s best chance of replicating his father’s great achievement, this dog seems to have it all and for me is the one they all have to beat he’s 20/1. ******

but he could have gone, the bookies pay 1/4 the odds first-six places and he must have each-way claims. ****

VANROONEY - Irish raider trained by Owen McKenna, he’s a strong runner and PAY FREEZE - is Elaine Parker’s star the I can’t see him not qualifying, he can make forgotten greyhound? He can boast he’s the final for us and land a 66/1 each-way won out of every single trap, he’s got big punt. *** race successes in the bag and is surely a big player. The bookies have him at 25/1 and FIERY SPLENDOUR - Kennel mate of Vanrooney but a completely different style, for me that represents good value. ***** this lad is all about early-pace, I’m a fan of SOUTHERN MESUT - I grabbed some of his and at 80/1 he’s worth a few shekels the 100/1 about Charlie Lister OBE early- each-way. ** paced star, he’s now a best priced 66/1, will he stay 480m at full speed? Probably not ECCLESTONE - Every year there is a

surprise package, this year it could be this fella, he moved well in a trial-stake and quoted at 100/1 he could take Paul Hennessy (Irish) on a great Derby journey, he’s worth a small each-way bet. *

What the trainers said: Charlie Lister OBE

Charlie can you win the Derby for an incredible eighth time? And if you can who will it be with? “We will be trying our best, this promises to be the greatest Derby ever with the magnificent £200,000 first-prize put up by William Hill, hopefully on the 31st May we

THE GREATEST RACE ON EARTH will be in the final with a chance, it will be tough to win it, some great dogs will be in it Gino (left) and Hit The Lid with John McGee but we will probably have a team of around eight to ten. Sidaz Jack is the champion, he will get better and better for the runs and is coming along nicely, what he did last year was incredible, we know he loves Wimbledon he’s got very good early and seemed to just get better and better during the competition. Sidarian Blaze won the Comerford at Shelbourne Park, lightly raced and showed he’s taken to Wimbledon with a brilliant win in a trial-stake he clocked 28.15 +10, lovely dog who looks to have it all. Southern Mesut is a dog with great earlypace, his sprint trial was fantastic if he sees out the 480m he is a player for sure, he will have a trial-stake before the competition and we will see how he goes but he’s a nice dog. Jordans Brianna is a nice dog, good earlypace and looks very much the sort of dog to do well at Wimbledon, he’s a nice dog and should go well in the Derby. Redbrick Stuart won the Northern Puppy Derby at Newcastle, I think there is more to come from him again he’s got nice early and Wimbledon will suit him. Hather George he’s been a fantastic dog, he owes us nothing, the owners want him to have a crack at the Derby he went well last year and I’d not write him off for this year he can keep qualifying. We will have one or two others possibly a team ten strong but have to confirm with the owners who is going in for it yet but the ones above should all go in the Derby and I could not pick one it will be a team effort, we have dogs definitely good enough to win it but you need that bit of luck with trap draws etc. Which dog would you would most like to train apart from your own? Swift Keith, John’s dog has been really impressive he showed he likes Wimbledon pace, I would have loved to have gone to Scotland but we decided to keep him for and that is important.” this, my dad ‘Pat’ won the Derby in 78 I’d be the happiest guy alive if we won it in Kennel’s best chance - “Swift Keith we are 2014. I think a dog will break 28.00 in this all so excited, all I’ve ever wanted to do is year’s Derby it’s going to be very special.” win the Derby, it means so much to me, I Dog most like to train apart from your think we’ve a dog capable of winning it, we own - “Kereight King he really impressed need that luck; trap draws, staying sound, me in a recent trial, he likes Wimbledon avoiding kennel sickness there is so much he’s got good early and looks a player.” that can go wrong we just hope and pray we get that luck that anyone who wins the Derby needs, Swift Keith has fantastic all round Kennel’s best chance - “Farloe Nutter

John Mullins

Craig Dawson

think Wimbledon will suit him more than Shawfield, he was fantastic in the Puppy Derby at Monmore, he’s got great all round pace, it’s a long journey but we will go there full of hope, if you’re not in it you can’t win it, we’ve a chance.” Dog most like to train apart from my own - “Sidarian Blaze looks a proper dog, Charlie will have a good team but this fella looks the business.”

Mark Wallis

Kennel’s main chance - “Blackrose Mar-

WILLIAM HILL GREYHOUND DERBY no guarantee but if he does he should go very well, we will have a big team over but Agent could be the one.” Dog most like to train apart from your own - “Swift Keith ‘really impressed me winning at Wimbledon on Sky, I rang my dad and said I’ve just seen a real dog, he looks to have it all, if I was given a charity bet I’d put it on him.”

Rab McNair

Kennel’s best chance - “Leamaneigh Turbo, he won the Comerford back in 2012 but smashed a wrist, we’ve been working on it for six-months if he stands up to the competition this fella could be a real surprise package. We will have a nice team heading to Wimbledon and it may surprise a few people I’ve put Turbo up but he is a very fast dog and like I say if he holds up this lad can run a big competition.” Dog most like to train apart from your own - “That is a tough one but I’d have to say Kereight King he flew the other night in a trial, he was impressive enough last year but looks a serious player to me again this year.”

Seamus Cahill

Kennel’s best chance - “Droopys Odell is probably our best chance, he can do it both ways and even when things don’t go his way he can battle and grab a qualifying spot, he’s not short of early either when he gets it right at the boxes, it’s going to be amazing and well done William Hill for putting up the money.” Dog most like to train apart from your own - “Kereight King impressed me the other night, he’s a fresh dog and should go well for his connections.”

Elaine Parker co ‘he’s got nice early and I’d say is probably our best chance, you never know with the Derby, it will be hard to win it but Marco is a decent dog and I think he is a bit overpriced.” Dog most like to train apart from your own - “Sidarian Blaze he impressed me at Wimbledon looks a very good dog and Charlie knows how to win a Derby.”

Jim Daly

have been well schooled, he was unlucky with trap draw at Monmore in the semifinal, he possesses great pace to the thirdbend and looks an ideal Wimbledon dog, we are full of hope.” Dog most like to train apart from your own - Rio Quattro ‘This dog really caught my eye at Monmore, I think he can go very well in the Derby.’

Kevin Hennessy

Kennel’s main chance - “Scarface he is Kennel’s best chance - “Barefoot Agent very young but is a Droopys dog so he will taking it on chance he takes to Wimbledon,

Kennel’s best chance - “I’d have to say Pay Freeze, he’s won out of every single trap, he’s got the big competition wins on his CV and thought he went very well for his first look at Wimbledon. I must just mention Candlelight King he’s never raced away from Sheffield before and for his first look at Wimbledon we thought he went very well, he’s not without a chance.” Dog most like to train apart from your own - “Swift Keith, he’s a young dog who’s lightly raced and seems to have some serious pace.”

Dean Childs

Kennel’s best chance - “Sidarian Teejay,

THE GREATEST RACE ON EARTH Slippy Blue

he showed he liked Wimbledon during the RFS puppy derby, he picked up an injury and was off for five months, he really impressed in his first trial back and I think he will only get better and better from here on in, in that trial he beat Droopys Norris who in his own right is a fast dog, he may surprise a few people.” Dog most like to train apart from your own - “Sidarian Blaze, flew the other night in a trial-stake, he won the big puppy race in Ireland and looks to have settled in here in the UK he could be the one to beat.”

Carol Weatherall

Kennel’s best chance - “Holdem Spy, we are still buzzing after his Scottish Derby victory, he narrowly missed out on the final during last year’s Derby so hopefully he can go one better this year, we are dreaming of

Sponsors William Hill

winning it and think he’s got a great eachway chance, he will go for the Irish Derby Get the latest Derby prices online at www. later in the year all being well.” williamhill.com Dog most like to train apart from your I caught up with the sponsors to ask for own - “Swift Keith, he looks a really excit- their Derby fancies.... ing dog and should go well.” This year’s William Hill Greyhound Derby is the biggest and best greyhound race ever and the crowning jewel in the calendar The number-one greyhound photograat Wimbledon. pher in the business travels the country Winning connections will receive a taking the pictures but he is also a great cheque for an astonishing £200,000! 28.14 seconds which is the fastest time of the year so far. He got to the third round last year but was struggling with a split web during the competition and was subsequently eliminated. After some time off he seems to be back in top form and there has been plenty of money for him over the last couple of weeks. Kereight King would be a bad result for William Hill. Also worthy of mention is last year’s winner Sidaz Jack who returns to defend his title after some time off. He produced the best run of his career last year when he was something of a surprise 8/1 winner in the final. Sidaz Jack has had two trial stakes races at Wimbledon on

the past two Saturday nights, winning the first and coming 2nd in the other. While he was not overly impressive in either run, Charlie Lister OBE assures us there is plenty more to come from him. Another runner who has come in for support is last year’s third-placed greyhound Ballymac Vic. He hasn’t raced since winning a prestigious “Night Of Stars” race at Shelbourne Park in November, but comes into the competition fresh and will surely go very close once again. He was arguably an “unlucky loser” last year, when he just failed to go round the bend in front of Sidaz Jack which may well have resulted in him winning the race. Ballymac Vic will be looking to make amends for that in what is probably going

to be his last attempt at a big competition before retiring to stud. William Hill anticipate another exciting draw on Sunday 26th April, where the eyes of the sporting world will focus on the dogs participating in the biggest greyhound race in the world. William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke said: “This year’s William Hill Greyhound Derby competition is the biggest event ever held in the sport, with more ways to bet than ever before — in shops, online and on mobile. “The passion of the crowds and the thrilling action on the track is what greyhound racing is all about and William Hill is proud to sponsor the greatest greyhound race in the world worth a record-breaking £200,000 to the winner!”

THE GREATEST RACE ON EARTH

Special bets and look at the draw The draw for the first round of the William Hill Greyhound Derby has been made and to coincide with the draw, the sponsors of the £200,000 competition have a series of special betting markets. It’s EVEN-MONEY that a greyhound manages to get to the Grand Final without winning a heat in the process, while it’s 40/1 that any greyhound WINS the whole competition without winning a heat before the final. Punters looking for a dog to complete the clean sweep and go unbeaten to the Derby crown can get 8/1 with William Hill. Seven time Derby winner Charlie Lister is 6/4 to have a greyhound in the Final. William Hill offer 2/5 that it’s a Rails seed who lands the title, with Wide at 3/1 and Middle at 6/1. The age-old battle between the UK and Ireland continues, with a UK winner at 1/3 and Ireland at 11/4 – while there’s a curveball entry from Hungary marked at 150/1. William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke: “As always the draw has thrown up some exciting heats and the competition promises to be one of the greatest in the history of greyhound racing. Wimbledon will be packed with passionate fans and with such a strong field this year, the action on the track will be breath-taking.” One of the highlights of the opening night is sure to be the return of the reigning Champion Sidaz Jack, who runs from Trap 1 in Heat 6. Holdem Spy, who has been popular in the antepost betting market, races from Trap 6 in the penultimate contest of the first night. The competition commences with the first round taking place on Friday 1st May, Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd May building towards the William Hill Greyhound Derby Grand Final on the 31st May.
