GRACE NOTES GRACE CATHEDRAL FALL 2016

SAN FRANCISCO’S CATHEDRAL FOR ALL: A PLACE FOR COMPASSION, INCLUSIVITY, CREATIVITY AND LEARNING.

DEAN’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Grace and peace to you! When I served at St. Clement’s Church in Berkeley I knew an older southern woman named Elise Ott who during this time of year fondly told me how much she loved living in a place where everyone was always hurrying off to learn something. At Grace Cathedral our new program season is beginning along with many opportunities for learning, especially around this year’s “Home” theme. Three experts on homelessness will launch our fall Forum in September. All of us recognize the seriousness of this heart-breaking problem and the difficulties we face as we try to overcome it. In October, Janet Napolitano, President of the University of California system, will come speak about education. Our 2016 Artists in Residence, Benjamin Bergery and Jim Campbell, will create a new work of art in the cathedral in December. Jacob’s Dream: A Luminous Path is an installation of light and moving images about the paths between earth and heaven. I think this work of art will inspire us to learn more about the connections between our physical and spiritual selves. We have many special worship and service events planned at the cathedral, from the blessing of animals on St. Francis’ feast day in October to the All Souls Choral Requiem in November and a yoga holiday wrapping party in December. Please bring someone along — everyone is welcome. Finally, I want to invite you to be part of our beautiful Christmas concerts and services. Christmas reminds us that we are always offered a chance to draw closer to the divine mystery, to respond in our lives with new forms of compassion. When I see people from near and far and all walks of life experiencing together our Christmas concerts and services, or the other offerings described in this fall issue of Grace Notes, the cathedral feels very much like home to me. Love, DAWN HARMER
