Dean’s Message Dear Friends, It is such a blessing for me to address you for the first time in Grace Notes, our seasonal publication for worship, education, service and the arts. I arrived here at Grace Cathedral as dean in the beginning of August after serving for fourteen years as the rector of the Episcopal church in Los Altos. It is a great pleasure to be here. The novelist E.M. Forster wrote that, “The specialty of the novel is that the writer can talk about his characters as well as through them or can arrange for us to listen when they talk to themselves. He has access to self-communings, and from that level he can descend even deeper and peer into the subconscious. A man does not talk to himself quite truly — not even to himself.” Forster is trying to explain a deep truth about why art and music matter so much in human existence. Because we are a strange mixture of dreams, desires, hopes, compulsions, insecurities and wisdom, we do not fully know ourselves. Like the novelist who speaks from deep within a character’s unconscious, art can suddenly confront us with a truth about ourselves that we had never before recognized. In the following pages you will find many different invitations to explore regions of your life and our shared existence that may open new possibilities. These include offerings as varied as our fall Forum series and the 50th Anniversary Duke Ellington Sacred Music concert, and opportunities to serve such as Yoga for Change and Grace Gives. I am especially looking forward to our Artists’ in Residence light and sound installation and our annual series of Christmas concerts. I am so grateful for the warm welcome I have received at Grace Cathedral and look forward to seeing you at the events described here. Jeremy Ranharter
