Bishop’s Message Dear Friends, I am blessed to have this opportunity to invite you to Grace Cathedral’s seasonal offerings of worship, education, service and the arts. Eastertide and spring are a time of renewal and growth, and the flowering of hope and joy is reflected in many things underway at Grace Cathedral. The Cathedral’s Year of Technology, launched in February at our Carnivale gala, explores technology’s integral presence and implications in our community and in the world. It is providing fresh inspiration to The Forum, our flagship conversation series, which will delve into questions such as whether and when technology enhances or diminishes our humanity. We are even upgrading our own use of technology to help further the Cathedral’s mission. For example, Grace Gives, a new service outreach program, will use technology to more efficiently match our community with service opportunities to make San Francisco a better place to live for all. We have a palette of arts events on offer this season that can stimulate and renew your soul and sense of wonder, including organ concerts, jazz for Pentecost and piano recitals, not to mention the beautiful live music that accompanies weekly yoga. Finally, the season of rebirth is reflected in our search for the ninth Dean of Grace Cathedral, as it moves toward a successful conclusion. I am deeply grateful for the engagement and support of the entire Cathedral community during this time. I hope to see you this spring. Technology is the annual theme that Grace Cathedral is exploring this year in its cultural offerings and dialogues. For example, at the May 10 spring Forum, the President of the American Civil Liberties Union will consider whether the law is lagging behind technology when it comes to protecting our rights and what we should do about it. Find more information about the spring Forum on page 6. KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE UNITED NATIONS 70TH ANNIVERSARY June 27, 1 – 6 P.M.

In celebration of the 1945 signing of the Charter of the United Nations in San Francisco, the day will include speakers, educational workshops and a concert “The Way Chose You,” inspired by Dag Hammarskjöld’s spiritual journal “Markings” and sung by the Swedish choir Kloster Vocalis. Spacious Grace

We remove the pews in the Cathedral when we hold Carnivale, our annual gala benefiting Cathedral life. This year, for the first time, we kept the pews out through Lent and called the period “Spacious Grace.” Spacious Grace allowed new opportunities for creative expression and worship. We hosted theater and contemporary dance performances that attracted hundreds of people, our congregation gathered in different ways using the flexible seating and there was more space for Yoga on the Labyrinth.

Inspired by the belief that Grace Cathedral can do more to make San Francisco a better place for all of its residents, this past February over 75 generous Carnivale guests raised their paddles to fund Grace Gives. Grace Gives will be a series of four volunteer service projects in collaboration with other city organizations. It will bring many different facets of the Cathedral community together to do the important work of serving our neighbors with empathy, action and love. Look for more information this fall.
CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES
As June approaches, our thoughts turn to the students who will be graduating from The Community Preschool and the Cathedral School for Boys. The Community Preschool is unique in that part of its very mission is to have students whose diversity reflects that of San Francisco, with respect to socioeconomic background, ethnicities, religious traditions and more. The Cathedral School for Boys stands out for educating boys in the best traditions of the Episcopal Church for almost sixty years. Grace Cathedral is extremely proud to be home to these two distinctive educational institutions. Please join us in congratulating and wishing a loving Godspeed to our graduates.

Our regular worship schedule includes four services on Sundays — 8:30 a.m. Eucharist; 11 a.m. Choral Eucharist; 3 p.m. Choral Evensong; and 6 p.m. evening Eucharist on the labyrinth — as well as Choral Evensong sung by our Choir of Men and Boys on Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. However, please note that Sunday Choral Evensong runs only through June 7 and resumes in the fall. Jazz saxophonist Stabe Wilson, who has appeared with some of the world’s most famous recording artists and gospel icons, will bring a soulful musical profundity to the 6 p.m. service on Pentecost. Choir Recognition Evensong june 4, 5:15 p.m.
Every spring, the Cathedral recognizes all the members of its renowned Choir of Men and Boys but especially the graduating 8th graders for their service in the choir. This is the final Evensong of the year in which our boys sing with the choirmen before leaving on their summer break.

Our Wednesday evening programs continue in Eastertide. We begin with Evening Prayer at 5:15 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. The programs start at 6:45 p.m. You may join “Respite,” a new group gathering for reflective prayer, simple worship and Bible study. Or, attend a fun series looking at resurrection as depicted in the movies, “I See Dead People!”

Marriage Equality Grace Cathedral supports marriage equality as part of compassionate and inclusive Christianity. Last year, on February 13, a special Evensong service celebrated the tenth anniversary of the first marriages of same-sex couples in San Francisco. The media have reported that the Supreme Court will hear arguments on marriage equality on April 28 and that a decision is expected by late June. Stay tuned to gracecathedral.org for news on how our community will come together to watch and pray as the Supreme Court reaches a decision.

Music and the Arts St. Olaf College Piano Tour May 27, 7 p.m.
The St. Olaf College Department of Music presents the 2015 Piano Tour: ten undergraduate pianists performing dance-inspired classical music from across the centuries. Join us for an engaging evening of Bach, Glazunov, Ravel, Scriabin and other masters. The event takes place in the Quire. Admission is free and all are welcome.

On September 16, the Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys will sing the national anthem at AT&T Park to kick off the Giants’ baseball game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Gary Desmond, Deputy Organist at Bath Abbey, has performed at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and Washington National Cathedral.
Nigel Potts, Organist and Choirmaster of Christ & Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in New York City, will be accompanied by Sarah Rose Taylor, a renowned soloist who has just released her debut recording. They will offer a colorful musical bouquet of opera by Wagner, oratorio by Handel, an Elgar song cycle and more.

These two concerts are part of Grace Cathedral’s Organ Recital Series. Suggested donation for the concerts, which bring world-class organists to perform on the Cathedral’s 7,466-pipe Aeolian-Skinner organ, is $10.
